4 Ways Small Businesses Can Innovate Without a Big Budget

n today’s fast-paced business landscape, it’s important for small business owners to adopt a mindset for innovation. However, the misconception that innovation requires vast resources and significant time investment can often deter entrepreneurs and business builders from pursuing new ideas and strategies. But with the right approach and perspective, small businesses can foster a culture within the company to make innovation more of an ongoing tenet of a successful business.

IAs small businesses look at their goals for the new year, with some businesses also thinking about how to do more with the same, consider these four practical tips to innovate without breaking the bank or spinning too many resources.

1. NURTURE AN INNOVATION MINDSET WITH YOUR TEAM Innovation starts with your team. Cultivating an innovation mindset among your team members is the first step toward achieving small wins that lead to breakthroughs. It is important for leaders to have the ability and willingness to analyze the environment, listen to feedback, and adapt to change. These are key disciplines to delivering products that delight customers. Here are some key aspects to consider: Embrace diverse perspectives: Different backgrounds and experiences bring unique viewpoints that can spark creativity and improve collaboration within your organization. Where you can, build diversity into your hiring strategy. Foster a culture of openness: Create an atmosphere where employees feel safe to share their ideas and insights freely. Make them feel that their opinions matter and that they have a stake in the company’s success. You can do this with monthly brainstorm sessions to get the whole team thinking about different challenges faced by the business.

Promote continuous learning: Encourage ongoing learning and skills development. There are lots of free online training resources that help employees stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies. By nurturing an innovation mindset within your team, you can tap into their collective creativity, which can lead to cost-effective innovations that drive your business forward.

2. LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS AND INNOVATE FOR THEM

Research from McKinsey & Company has shown that improving the client experience can increase sales revenues by 2%-7%. However, one common pitfall in innovation is over-engineering solutions that don’t align with your

customers’ needs. Prioritize innovation that is rooted in customer feedback, provides value, and aligns with business goals, and is measurable. Here are a few ways you can build trust with your customers and serve as a pipeline to fuel innovation:

Provide multi-channel support: For customers who still need help after navigating your educational resources, offer support across the platforms that matter to them - such as email, social media, SMS, in-app support and more. Leverage tech-enabled tools, such as finance software that offers free phone and chat support with live agents. This meets your customers where they are, letting them reach you in a way they find comfortable and convenient.

Deliver a personalized customer experience with AI tools: Chatbots make a particularly helpful AI-powered customer support tool. A chatbot can respond to customers in real time, offering additional information about your products or services or even fielding customer service questions. AIpowered marketing tools can be used for content creation, social media management, and more. Chatbots and other AI tools can do more than just answer customer inquiries about your products. The best AI tools can adapt and learn from customer behavior.

Cascade the outside, inside: Often customer feedback does not go beyond the customer support team. To help drive more organic innovation, enable regular touch points between team members who face customers and team members who are on the front lines of innovation.

By keeping your customers’ needs at the forefront of your innovation efforts, you can ensure your new ideas are well-targeted.

3. ENSURE

YOUR TECH TOOLS HELP YOU MOVE THE BUSINESS FORWARD

Efficiency is a cornerstone of cost-effective innovation. Leveraging technology to automate manual tasks lets you accomplish more in less time, freeing up valuable staff time to focus on strategic and creative thinking. You want to work with technology partners that can help you customize tools to meet the needs of your business and facilitate integration. Remember that innovation can come from anywhere in your business so keep your automation goals broad. Here’s how some small businesses have found solutions that make an impact:

Automate financial operations: Using technology to eliminate manual activities, such as invoicing, bill payments and financial reporting, helps you streamline operations and reduce human error. It also helps you get back to focusing on what matters to you, your business. Finding a solution that pre-populates invoice information can save business

owners, on average, 50% of time on bill pay alone. Use data analysis to uncover business insights more easily: Solutions that bring efficiency and optimization to your business can provide valuable analytics that can uncover insights to fuel innovation, inform your decision-making and identify areas for improvement.

By harnessing technology to optimize key foundational parts of your business operations, you can achieve cost savings and efficiency gains that contribute to your overall business innovation.

4. DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAIL FORWARD

Innovation is inherently risky, and not every idea will yield immediate success. However, the more efficient and automated some functions or processes are, the more a small business can embrace a culture of “failing forward,” where failure is viewed as a learning opportunity rather than a setback. It will help employees have the space and time to be more creative or innovative.

HERE’S HOW TO

DO IT:

Encourage experimentation. Encourage your team to experiment with new ideas and approaches, even if they come with a degree of uncertainty. Build in time to test-run the idea, with an evaluation checkpoint, before implementing it system-wide.

ITERATE AND REFINE: After an experiment, assess what worked and what didn’t. Use these insights to refine your approach and try again.

Acknowledge lessons learned from failures: Celebrate the lessons learned from failures. This will encourage a culture where innovation is valued regardless of the outcome, giving business owners a competitive edge and supporting employee retention.

Remember that many groundbreaking innovations have emerged from a series of trial and error. By embracing failure as a steppingstone to success, your small business can take actionable steps toward building a culture that promotes creative thinking, and develop innovative solutions without a big investment.

In conclusion, innovation isn’t solely reserved for large corporations with deep pockets. Small businesses can thrive in today’s competitive landscape by adopting an innovation mindset, listening to customers, harnessing technology to optimize and adapt to market shifts, and being unafraid to experiment and learn from failures. With the right strategies and a commitment to cost-effective innovation, your small business can stay ahead of the curve.

CHOICES & CONSEQUENCES: Author Boaz Bivens Shares Valuable Lessons that Shaped Him

Author, educator, and motivational speaker Boaz Bivens is using the events of his life to enlighten, inform, and empower others to be keenly aware of their daily decisions in his debut autobiography, ‘Choices and Consequences.’

For over 20 years, the Detroit native, who is also known as “Coach Bo,” has been a pillar in the realms of education and sports. His dual role as a professor and college basketball coach at Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University has helped him share a wealth of knowledge as he pours into his athletes and other youth around him. In this book, he displays a clear ability to captivate readers as he discusses a ray of topics, such as life, family, religion, education, sex, love, marriage, and friendships.

“There’s a chronological order from birth to adulthood and I think the chapters are very relatable. Every individual will encounter these. I was thinking about my life and the choices that came with it,” Bivens said when explaining why he chose to cover these topics. “My mom had three abortions. None of them were me, so I’m grateful. It starts with that choice—the choice of life.”

The chapters paint vivid pictures of inspiration and motivation, highlighting challenges that he conquered and lessons that he has learned over the course of his life. Throughout this book, it is evident that Bivens has embraced his oftentimes difficult yet rewarding journey as he dives into a rough background that is unfortunately the reality of many others who have grown up in disadvantaged areas. During an interview with d-mars,

Bivens shared that writing this book-- which also talks about the effects of witnessing domestic abuse, growing up without a father, and almost being molested-- helped start his healing process in a lot of ways. It also made him realize that sharing his experiences could help someone else.

“I hold a lot of stuff in. It liberated me to the point where I can open up about things that are inside that I wouldn’t normally share and it enabled me to do that,”

Bivens explained. “I still have certain anxieties, feelings and emotions about certain things that have happened and the individuals that were responsible for them. I

needed to just get it out because I’m speaking for other people too.”

Bivens’ story is a testament to the power of purpose, filled with passion and electrifying stories that resonate across a diverse landscape. This book serves as a beacon of hope for those who are seeking transformation, progression and a change for the better.

“It (the book) can possibly help the next person help the next person,” Bivens said. “So, if somebody has been through something and they read it in the book and share it with someone else, that can help the next person.” Bivens lives by the quote, "The only fingerprint that cannot be removed is the life that you touch."

‘Choices and Consequences’ can be purchased on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Prairie Lights Books, and other platforms. For more information, visit

Children’s Museum Houston & Harris County Public Library Recipients of

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced Children’s Museum Houston (CMH) and Harris County Public Library (HCPL) of Houston as two of the 10 recipients of the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The national medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. For the past 30 years, the award has celebrated institutions that are making a difference for individuals, families, and communities.

“IMLS is delighted to announce the 10 recipients of the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service,” said IMLS Acting Director Cyndee Landrum. “These institutions and their dedicated staff are stepping up to

anticipate and meet the needs of their individual communities. From New York to Arizona, these 10 recipients are unparalleled sources of education, health, jobs, and cultural resources, bridging the gaps of distance, resources, and experience for community members. We look forward to honoring their accomplishments in Washington, DC, this summer!”

This year’s awards mark a historic milestone on multiple fronts. Notably, the institutions celebrate a groundbreaking double victory as both a library and a museum from the same city claim the prestigious honor for the first time. Furthermore, the return of the award to Houston holds special significance, marking the first win for the city since The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston received the award in 1997.

“Winning the IMLS National Medal for Museum and Library Service alongside Harris County Public Library is a remarkable achievement for the children and families of Houston,” said Children’s Museum Houston CEO

Rayanne Darensbourg. “For the Museum this award symbolizes our success in ensuring that every family has access to the best science, technology, engineering, math, literacy, cultural, and art exhibits and programming –equipping children to dream big and reach their fullest potential. Together, with Harris County Public Library, we have made history, and together, we will continue to inspire, educate, and empower generations to come.”

“It is fitting that the Children’s Museum Houston and Harris County Public Library were awarded this honor in the same year. Our missions are, in many ways, parallel,” said HCPL Executive Director Edward Melton. “In a time when equitable public education has become politicized, our two organizations step up to offer access to programs and resources that inspire curiosity and nurture a lifelong love of learning. While this award honors the achievements of HCPL and CMH for the year 2024, I believe it is all about the future and our continued commitment to educational access.”

Community Honors Life of Rev. William Lawson, Founder of Houston’s Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church

Several Houston community members paid their respects to Reverend William A. Lawson, the founding pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, who passed away on May 14 at the age of 95.

Rev. Lawson’s body lay in state from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. A Community Service of Celebration was held at 6 p.m. on the same day, drawing several Houstonians and mourners to Wheeler Avenue. The final service, which was the Congregational Service of Celebration, was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 24.

Rev. Lawson, a prominent civil rights leader, was known for his significant contributions to the civil rights movement. He played a crucial role in desegregating Houston and was closely associated with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who he remained friends with until King’s assassination.

Lawson moved to Houston to become the director of the Baptist Student Union at Texas Southern University. He founded Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in 1962, which grew from 13 members to over 15,000. Throughout his career, he was deeply involved in advocating for social justice, setting up a local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and supporting various civil rights initiatives.

In addition to his work with the church, Lawson was instrumental in various community projects, including establishing affordable housing and single-gender charter schools. His efforts were recognized by numerous accolades, including having part of Rice University’s campus named “The William A. Lawson Grove” in his honor. Lawson and his late wife, Audrey Hoffman Lawson, had four children. He is survived by three daughters — longtime ABC 13 anchor Melanie, Cheryl and Roxanne — his granddaughters, Robyn and Raven, and his two great-grandsons, Amadeus and Ronin. Lawson’s legacy is marked by his ability to bring together communities and his unwavering commitment to justice and equality. He is remembered as a beacon of peace and a transformative figure in both Houston and the civil rights movement.

HONORING THE ROLE AND IMPACT OF MEN

y father was an incredible man who taught me invaluable lessons about life. From discipline and responsibility to being accountable for my actions and taking initiative, his guidance shaped who I am today. These teachings were not just about daily routines but about the essence of living a meaningful and purposeful life.

MWhile many of us have cherished memories of our fathers, it is important to acknowledge that not everyone shares this experience. Some people may not know their fathers, have strained or difficult relationships, or may have been hurt by their fathers. For those individuals, the concept of fatherhood can evoke a range of emotions, from longing and sadness to anger and disappointment. It is also important to recognize those who may need healing or forgiveness for things their fathers did or did not do in their lives. Whether one’s relationship with their father is a source of joy or pain, each experience is valid and significant. Understanding and empathy for those varied experiences are essential as we explore the role and impact of men. Men play a pivotal and transformative role in shaping our society. Despite being frequently overshadowed by negative stereotypes and societal expectations, the contributions of many men span across various domains, from family life to the professional world, and from community leadership to cultural impact. Understanding and appreciating the multifaceted roles men play is vital in fostering a better world.

THE ROLE OF MEN IN SOCIETY

Men are often the bedrock of family stability and emotional resilience. As fathers, brothers, sons, and partners, outside of the endearing “dad jokes,” they tend to impart invaluable life lessons, instill discipline, and nurture growth. Their guidance can play a fundamental part in the holistic development of children, fostering emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

Men have historically driven economic progress and innovation. Their roles in various industries and sectors fuel economic growth, create job opportunities, and spearhead technological advancements. From entrepreneurs to engineers, and scientists to service workers, men’s economic contributions are foundational to societal prosperity. As such, men can play a transformative role in supporting women’s economic advancement by championing gender equality in the workplace, mentoring female colleagues, and advocating for inclusive policies that ensure equal opportunities for all.

While men frequently assume leadership roles that inspire and mobilize communities, their leadership can also significantly support women in achieving leadership positions. By advocating for inclusivity and promoting

equal opportunities, men can help to foster a gender and ethnically diverse and effective leadership landscape. Men’s leadership in public service, education, and nonprofit sectors catalyzes positive change and drives societal progress. Their involvement in civic activities, volunteerism, and mentoring programs helps to build communities.

CURRENT ISSUES AFFECTING MEN

Despite their roles, men may face a myriad of challenges that impact their ability to thrive and contribute effectively. The struggle to balance professional responsibilities with personal life is a significant issue for many men. The demands of long working hours and high-pressure jobs often limit their capacity to engage meaningfully with their families and communities. This struggle affects men mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Mental health is an often overlooked issue for men. Society expects men to be strong, unemotional towers of stoicism. This unhealthy approach can prevent men from seeking help, which has led to increased rates of depression, anxiety, stress, and even illness. The stigma surrounding mental health issues further exacerbates these challenges, making it difficult for men to access the support they need or even feel comfortable reaching out for help.

Traditional gender roles can restrict men from expressing vulnerability or pursuing careers and interests that fall outside societal norms. These limitations hinder personal growth and transparency and stifle diversity and inclusivity. Men face unique health challenges, including higher risks of certain diseases and as a result, a lower life expectancy, compared to women. Addressing these health disparities through preventive care and health education is crucial for improving men’s overall well-being. Making efforts to remove the stigma and barriers to help are key to providing pathways to improving men’s health.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL HEALTH FOR MEN

The importance of mental health cannot be stressed enough. It significantly impacts our ability to function effectively in all areas of life. Additional reasons why mental health is essential for men include:

• It enables men to maintain emotional balance, better manage stress, and build resilience. Being emotionally stable is important for personal well-being, interacting with others and being an effective parent.

• Mental health directly influences productivity and performance in professional settings. Men who prioritize their mental well-being equip themselves to excel in their careers and contribute positively to their workplace and at home.

• Men with good mental health are more likely to cultivate and sustain healthy relationships.

TIPS FOR MEN

Maintaining good mental health is essential for thriving in various aspects of life. Here are practical tips to help men manage their mental health and be their best:

• Take Care of Yourself: Engage in activities that relax and recharge you, such as hobbies, exercise, or simply taking time to rest. It is okay to take a break.

• Seek Support: Talk about your feelings to those you trust. Seeking help is strength, not weakness.

• Be Realistic and Honest: Set achievable goals, celebrate all victories, and extend yourself grace when you make a mistake.

• Be Present: Actively engage in the lives of your family and community. Your presence and participation matter and have lasting impacts.

• Communicate Openly: Encourage honest and open communication in all relationships. Listening to others and providing support without judgment strengthens connections, builds trust, and avoids dramatic outcomes.

• Lead by Example: Demonstrate respect, responsibility, and kindness in your actions. By modeling positive behavior, you inspire others.

• Continue Learning: Commit to lifelong learning and self-improvement. Staying informed and acquiring new skills enhances your knowledge and increases your ability to contribute effectively.

While it is important to acknowledge the positive contributions men make to society, we must also address the negative impact of those whose behaviors and attitudes are harmful.

Toxic masculinity, chauvinism, dismissal of women’s contributions, sexual objectification, patriarchal thinking, and gender equality reluctance are all the kind of thinking that perpetuates unhealthy dynamics and thereby hinder progress and the well-being of women and children. To foster a healthier and more inclusive world, it is essential for men to challenge and overcome these mindsets.

Let us acknowledge the invaluable presence of men in our lives and encourage them to be the best they can be. By recognizing their contributions and addressing the challenges they face, we can promote a healthier, more balanced, and inclusive world. Happy Father’s Day!

a Good Night’s Rest Secrets to Getting

Did you know nearly eight in 10 Americans are trying to improve their sleep this year? In a recent survey, nearly half ranked this goal as their number one priority. If getting better sleep is at the top of your list to improve your health, you may want to review habits that could be preventing you from getting a full night of deep, restorative sleep. This is even more crucial when your schedule changes, such as during spring break or when you have to move clocks forward for daylight saving time.

A survey conducted by One Poll on behalf of Herbalife examined sleep habits of 5,000 Americans, split evenly by state, to reveal who’s getting the best sleep, how many hours per night they’re sleeping, plus typical habits around this often-overlooked aspect of health and well-being.

Discoveries from the survey include the fact that respondents in California appear to get the best sleep, South Carolina coming in second and New York com ing in third, with Maryland and New Jersey tied at fourth place. However, while experts recom mend adults sleep for seven to nine hours per night, re spondents in California report getting just over six-and-a-half hours of sleep per night.

Regardless of where they live, over half of respond ents (55%) can’t remem ber the last time they had a “perfect night” of sleep, and 78% can’t recall when they last had a “perfect week” of sleep. While “perfect” sleep

might be unattainable, less than half (48%) said yes when asked whether they know how to get a good night’s sleep - and 66% of respondents admit that within two hours before bed, they watch TV or scroll through their phone for extended periods of time, which are not recommended as activities conducive to good sleep.

“Getting good quality sleep is essential for everyone,” said John Heiss, Ph.D., and vice president of Global Product Innovation, Herbalife. “Sleep supports important functions including metabolism and brain health and can have an impact on conditions including heart disease, obesity and depression.”

HOW

TO GET BETTER SLEEP EVERY NIGHT

To help you sleep longer and more deeply, try incorporating these habits into your daily routine.

Don’t overeat near bedtime: Eating lighter, low-fat meals at dinner eases digestion, and healthy carbohydrates

sleep rhythm your body will begin to anticipate. You can prepare for changes in your routine, including when you must “spring forward” your clock, by gradually adjusting your schedule.

Try stress-reduction techniques: Extensive research on the benefits of relaxation techniques like meditation, breathing exercises and reading show they can all help reduce stress. These practices can help reduce insomnia if you do them regularly, especially before bedtime.

Develop a bedtime routine: To help prepare for sleep, dim house lights in the evening and follow a digital detox rule of no computers or digital devices at least one hour before bedtime - including TV watching.

“Blue light from TVs, phones and other digital devices can impair the quality of your sleep. Even if you can fall asleep, the quality of sleep is reduced, and your brain biology is disrupted,” said Heiss. “Blue light can disrupt your circadian rhythm, which controls mood, organ function and metabolism. Blue light may also be the culprit if you’re experiencing food cravings.”

WHICH OF THESE RECOMMENDED STEPS ARE AMERICANS CURRENTLY FOLLOWING?

• Making bedtime and/or morning routine more consistent - 44%

• Taking time away from screens before bed - 39%

• Eating less in the evening/before bed - 30%

• Making time for quiet hobbies before bed (reading, yoga, etc.) - 30%

• Changing diet - 23%

Changing your habits during the day, and especially right before bed, could make all the difference when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.

Beyond the Baby Blues

Confronting Pregnancy-Related Mental Health Challenges

regnancy and childbirth are often celebrated as incredible, remarkable events in a woman’s life. But for some, it can be anything but joyful. One in five women experience pregnancy-related mental health conditions. Of those, 20% will face suicidal thoughts or attempt to harm themselves. In fact, maternal mental health challenges are the number one cause of maternal mortality, primarily due to suicide.

Mental health conditions are among the most common complications of pregnancy and can present themselves in many ways. In addition to sleep disruption, some women feel unable or unwilling to care for their baby, while others have negative thoughts about their baby.

In some cases, women may experience hallucinations, psychosis, or severe depression.

Most women have some degree of the “baby blues.”

So, what makes some women more likely to experience more severe mental health issues? Women with a history of anxiety or mood disorders or those with a family history of postpartum depression have a higher risk. Women from under-resourced communities, those with little to no social support, and those who use substances like drugs or alcohol also face higher risks, as are women who have experienced fertility challenges, an unwanted pregnancy, or a difficult birth. And among communities of color, stigma and judgment often prevent women (and men) from seeking mental health treatment.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. As a medical professional specializing in women’s health and a mother of two, I believe it is crucial to shed light on this silent epidemic. The time has come to recognize that pregnancy-related mental health conditions are not only prevalent but largely preventable. With a concerted effort to raise awareness and prioritize maternal mental health, we can take significant steps to save lives and ensure a safer journey into motherhood. Here are a few tips to help combat maternal mental health challenges:

Inform yourself: Take some time to familiarize yourself with emotional changes that can come with pregnancy and the postpartum period. Learning about common experiences and knowing when things may be veering into more serious territory can be immensely helpful. This knowledge not only helps in setting your own expectations but also empowers you to communicate effectively with healthcare providers.

Destigmatize mental health: It’s okay to talk about how we’re really feeling, even when it’s tough. Whether you’re pregnant, a new parent, or a supportive partner or friend, speaking up about mental health challenges should be as normal as talking about a backache. When we open up, we make it easier for everyone to seek the help they might need without fear.

Monitor your well-being: Keep an eye on how you’re feeling emotionally, not just physically. Changes in mood, energy levels or thoughts can be subtle clues that you need some extra care. It’s like keeping a diary of your emotional world - noting down what feels different, what’s worrying you, or even what’s bringing you unexpected joy.

Call your health plan provider: Your health insurer can also help you access care. For example, some insurers like UnitedHealthcare have specially trained advocates to support members who might be struggling due to their social environment. They’re there to help members understand their benefits and guide them to timely care.

Take advantage of your Employee Assistance Program (EAP): These programs typically offer services that relatively few employees take advantage of. For example, if your employer offers EAP in-the-moment support through UnitedHealthcare, you can call in to speak confidentially with a master’s level behavioral health clinician to receive support as many times as needed, in real-time, and around the clock - even if it’s 2 a.m. on a Saturday.* Depending on your situation, you may not need to seek additional behavioral health support with a care provider if your EAP offers personalized guidance.

Seek support: Don’t hesitate to ask your personal or professional networks for help. A trusted healthcare provider can guide you to the right level of support, such as talking to an expert in person or virtually, or joining a network or discussion group about this issue. Your family and friends can be there for you by listening, offering the voice of experience, or even helping with household chores to allow you time to rest. Remember that taking action early is a proactive step toward maintaining your mental health. It’s a sign of strength. As we journey toward safer motherhood experiences, it is essential to recognize the significance of pregnancy-related mental health conditions and take action to address this pressing issue. Together, we can break the silence, prioritize maternal mental health, and ensure that no mother faces this challenge alone. It is time to unite, embrace compassion, and empower all women to embark on their motherhood journey with strength and resilience.

* EAP availability varies by plan design and benefits selected by the employer

VEIN DISEASE IN MEN Understanding AN OVERLOOKED HEALTH ISSUE

ein disease, also known as venous insufficiency, is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. While it’s commonly associated with women, men are also susceptible to this condition. However, due to societal norms and misconceptions, vein disease in men often goes unrecognized and untreated. In this article, we’ll explore vein disease from a men’s health perspective, discussing its causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

What is Vein Disease?

Vein disease, or venous insufficiency, occurs when veins struggle to send blood from the limbs back to the heart, leading to issues like:

• Chronic Venous Insufficiency: Long-term poor blood flow causing swelling, skin changes, and ulcers.

• Varicose Veins: Enlarged, twisted veins visible under the skin, typically in the legs. Spider Veins: Small, web-like veins on the skin’s surface.

• Deep Vein Thrombosis: Blood clots in deep veins, which can become life-threatening if they reach the lungs.

PREVALENCE AND RISK FACTORS IN MEN

Studies suggest that around 45% of men will experience some form of vein disease in their lifetime. Risk factors include:

1. Genetics: A family history of vein disease.

2. Age: Increased likelihood with age.

3. Obesity: Extra weight strains veins.

4. Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Jobs requiring long periods of inactivity.

5. Lack of Physical Activity: Poor circulation due to inactivity.

SYMPTOMS TO WATCH FOR

Men often ignore early signs, mistaking them for aging or fatigue. Symptoms include:

• Aching or heaviness in the legs

• Swelling, especially in the lower legs and ankles

• Itching around veins

• Skin discoloration or texture changes

• Visible, enlarged veins

• Ignoring these can lead to serious complications like leg ulcers and blood clots.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Early diagnosis is crucial. Doctors use physical exams and ultrasounds to assess vein function.

Treatment Options:

1. Lifestyle Changes: Exercise and weight management improve symptoms.

2. Compression Therapy: Compression stockings support veins and enhance blood flow.

3. Medications: Pain and swelling can be managed with medication.

4. Minimally Invasive Procedures: Sclerotherapy, laser treatments, and radiofrequency ablation treat varicose and spider veins.

5. Surgical Options: Severe cases might require vein stripping or other surgeries. PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Men can take steps to reduce the risk of vein disease: Stay Active: Regular exercise boosts circulation.

Maintain a Healthy Weight: Reduces strain on veins.

Elevate Legs: Helps reduce swelling.

Wear Compression Socks: Useful during long periods of standing or sitting.

Avoid Tight Clothing: Restrictive clothing can hinder blood flow.

Vein disease in men is a significant yet often overlooked health issue. By understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatment options, men can proactively manage their vein health. If experiencing symptoms, consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment is crucial. Reincke Vein Center offers free consultations for patients to ensure that they are given professional medical advice without the financial burden. Prioritizing vein health contributes not only to physical well-being but also to overall quality of life.

Breaking the Silence Breast Cancer Disparities Among Black Women

All you need to know about breast cancer in Black women and why it is important to get tested

reast cancer is a pervasive health concern that affects millions of women worldwide. While significant progress has been made in breast cancer research and treatment, disparities in breast cancer outcomes among different racial and ethnic groups persist.

BAmong these disparities, Black women face unique challenges that demand attention and action. In this article, we will delve into the statistics surrounding breast cancer in Black women, explore why they are less likely to get tested, and discuss the importance of addressing these disparities.

WHAT STATISTICS SAY ABOUT BREAST CANCER & BLACK WOMEN

The statistics regarding breast cancer in Black women are concerning. According to the American Cancer

Society, Black women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age and a later stage compared to their white counterparts. They are also more likely to die from breast cancer. In fact, the breast cancer mortality rate for Black women is 40% higher than for white women.

One of the key factors contributing to these disparities is the lower screening rates among Black women. Studies show that Black women are less likely to undergo regular mammograms, which can detect breast cancer at an early and more treatable stage. This discrepancy in screening rates is a critical issue that needs to be addressed to reduce breast cancer-related mortality among Black women.

WHY ARE BLACK WOMEN LESS LIKELY TO GET TESTED?

Several factors contribute to the lower screening rates and delayed diagnosis of breast cancer among Black women, including lack of access to healthcare, socioeconomic disparities, cultural and historical factors, and fear, amongst others.

Many Black women face barriers to accessing healthcare services, including a lack of health insurance, transportation issues, and limited availability of healthcare facilities in their communities. These barriers can prevent them from seeking regular screenings and early signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

Socioeconomic factors, such as income and education, also play a significant role in breast cancer disparities. Black women are more likely to live in poverty, which can lead to a lack of awareness about breast cancer and limited access to healthcare resources.

Cultural beliefs and mistrust of the healthcare system, stemming from a history of medical exploitation and discrimination, can deter Black women from seeking medical care and regular screenings.

Finally, fear of a breast cancer diagnosis and the associated stigma can be powerful deterrents to seeking early detection and treatment. Some Black women may delay seeking medical attention due to these emotional factors.

ADDRESSING DISPARITIES OF BREAST CANCER AMONGST BLACK WOMEN

It is imperative to address breast cancer disparities among Black women. Here are some steps that can be taken to promote early detection and better outcomes:

1. Education and Awareness: Raising awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection through community outreach and culturally sensitive educational campaigns can help overcome misinformation and fear.

2. Increased Access to Healthcare: Expanding access to healthcare services, particularly in underserved communities, can reduce barriers to screening and diagnosis.

3. Advocacy and Support: Community organizations, advocates, and policymakers can work together to address systemic issues and advocate for policies that improve healthcare access and reduce disparities.

Her Down There Is Here To Help

Breast cancer disparities among Black women are pressing issues that demand attention and action. The statistics are clear: Black women face higher mortality rates due to late-stage diagnoses and lower screening rates.

At Her Down There, the team offers affordable, specialized, and high-quality medical attention and support for women. From labs and testing, menstrual irregularities, and medication, to genetic testing, gender-affirming care, and more.

Every woman deserves the chance for early detection and timely treatment, regardless of her race or ethnicity. It’s time to break the silence and work together to ensure that all women have the opportunity for a healthier future.

EMBRACING HERITAGE AND HEALTH

Sickle Cell Therapeutics Summit & Health Fair

Set for June 15

n a powerful celebration of history and health, the As One Foundation, in partnership with the Sickle Cell Community Consortium and the Black Heritage Society, is proud to announce the Sickle Cell Therapeutics Summit & Health Fair in observance of World Sickle Cell Day and Juneteenth.

Happening on Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Fifth Ward Multi-Service Center (located at 4014 Market St., Houston, Texas 77020), this event is an intentional leaning into the fact that both Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day share the annual June 19th date, where the Black community is the focal point of both. Interested participants can register for this significant event by visiting https://tinyurl.com/as1scsummit.

CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day and named for the combination of “June” and “nineteenth,” marking the date in 1865, commemorates the pivotal moment in American history - the emancipation of enslaved Blacks in the United States when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare the end of slavery a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. This day is celebrated annually to honor freedom and acknowledge the struggles and triumphs of Blacks in America in their pursuit of equality.

RAISING AWARENESS ON WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY

World Sickle Cell Day, observed on June 19 since it was established in 2008 by the United Nations General Assembly and first celebrated in 2009, is dedicated to raising awareness and recognizing the challenges of sickle cell disease—a genetic blood disorder predominantly affecting people of African descent. This day serves as a time to highlight the medical and social challenges faced by individuals living with sickle cell disease and to advocate for improved treatments and care.

Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to become misshapen and can lead to severe pain, infections, and complications such as stroke and organ damage. Despite medical advancements, many individuals with sickle cell disease still face significant barriers to adequate health care. By focusing on these issues, World Sickle Cell Day aims to foster understanding, support, and change within the healthcare community and beyond.

A UNIFIED CELEBRATION

The convergence of Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day underscores the interconnectedness of these observances and highlights the importance of addressing health disparities while celebrating the resilience of the Black community. This year’s Sickle Cell Therapeutics Summit & Health Fair will feature a vibrant Juneteenth Jubilee Booth Expo atmosphere, complete with free food, door prizes, and a kid zone. Educational sessions about sickle cell therapeutics will be a central feature, providing valuable information and resources for those affected by sickle cell disease and trait.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND SUPPORT

The event is free and open to the community, particularly those living with sickle cell disease or caring for someone with the condition. Attendees can look forward to a day filled with education, celebration, and community support. Prizes will be awarded to registered participants who are present at the event, adding an exciting incentive for attendees to engage fully with the day’s activities. This event is not only a celebration of freedom and resilience but also a call to action to continue the fight for equity in health care. The list of community partners, in addition to the Sickle Cell Community Consortium and the Black Heritage Society, include the Houston Health Department, Houston Sickle Cell Collaborative, Chris “CJ” Johnson Foundation, Potters Smile, Supporting Our Sickle Cell Survivors (SOS) Parent & Guardian Support Group and Sickle Cell Research & Support Foundation.

4 Films Every Educator Teaching Black Students Should Watch

acial prejudice and bullying, a lack of funding, inadequate mental health support, and inexperienced teachers — those are just some of the challenges Black students face in America’s K-12 public schools. We see some of these issues show up on television on “Abbott Elementary,” but representations of Black students and schools are a mixed bag on the big screen. Some films dive right into the stereotype of the white savior teacher who rescues bad Black kids from their terrible neighborhoods and families. So, where can teachers see accurate and empathetic representations of the struggles, successes and joys of teaching Black kids in deliberately underfunded and disenfranchised schools?

RAnd, most importantly, where are films that present possible suggestions and solutions for educators? Here are four films every educator teaching Black students should watch. They’ll give folks an idea of what the challenges are, what solutions people are trying, and sometimes they make us smile:

1. THE GREAT DEBATERS

Featuring Hollywood A-listers like Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker, and Kimberly Elise, the 2007 hit movie “The Great Debaters” is based on a true story about the history of Wiley College’s first debate team. Portrayed by Washington, Professor Melvin B. Tolson inspires the 1935 team to perform at their highest level as they go through a nearly undefeated season. They encounter the Southern heat, a lynch mob, Jim Crow, and sexism, all the while working tirelessly to make it to the championship match against Harvard University’s debate team.

Whether it’s opportunities not being presented, being

judged harsher than their white counterparts, or simply the prejudice they receive from simply being Black, the film is a modern-day parallel to the challenges Black students, teachers and coaches face when pursuing excellence.

2. TEACH US ALL

In 1957, nine African American students were escorted to the doors of Little Rock Central High School, three years after the Brown v. Board of Education decision deemed it illegal to segregate schools. During their first few attempts to enter, the students were spit on, blockaded and forced out of an Arkansas high school. But eventually, they would walk into the building. Decades later, the discrimination and inequalities Black students faced then have taken on new shapes and forms all over the country. The 2017 documentary “Teach Us All,” produced by Ava DuVernay’s film distribution company ARRAY, puts what happened in Little Rock as the backdrop to looking at education in three different cities – New York, Los Angeles, and Little Rock. The film looks specifically at the roles of teachers in creating educational change, as well as how the community and students themselves are demanding justice.

3. RUBY BRIDGES

Being the first Black student to attend an all-white elementary school couldn’t have been easy in 1960 Louisiana. But that was the reality for 6-year-old Ruby Bridges, who had to be protected by federal marshals as she entered William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans.

The 1998 Disney-produced film about Bridges, who is now 69, was recently banned from a Florida school because a parent worried it would make her child feel guilty about racism. Given that school segregation jumped 35% from 1991 to 2020 in the 100 largest school districts, the depiction of Bridges’ journey is a reminder of the role teachers can play in counteracting disrespect and racism in schools.

4. WAITING FOR SUPERMAN

School choice has been helpful for some families, harmful for others and life-changing for a select few.

The 2010 documentary “Waiting for Superman” follows five young New York City students during the highstakes lottery selection to get into one of the city’s charter schools. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim puts faces and names to education statistics and gives us a look at the education system from a parent and child perspective. It also sparks plenty of reflection on the lengths families will go to ensure their child has access to an excellent education, regardless of societal or economic status.

DID YOU

KNOW?

Ed Dwight, the pioneering African American who came close to becoming America’s first Black astronaut six decades ago, achieved his longawaited journey into space at the age of 90. On Sunday, May 19, 2024, Dwight, along with five crewmates, soared aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. The liftoff from Blue Origin’s West Texas launch site was the company’s first passenger flight in nearly two years. This approximately 10-minute suborbital flight etched Dwight’s name in history as the oldest person to reach space, surpassing Star Trek actor William Shatner, who held the record at age 90 until Dwight’s journey.

“Expanding Hazel’s virtual services will promote health equity in the community by ensuring all students can access the care they need,” said Hazel Health Chief Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles. “Now, when any HISD student needs care, they can get it at their school or a nearby Sunrise Center with no out-of-pocket costs to their family. Students will receive high-quality care regardless of their immigration status, ability to pay, or whether they have health insurance. Our partnership with HISD is removing barriers so students can come to class healthy and ready to learn and thrive.”

As the nation’s largest provider of school-based telehealth, Hazel Health works with districts and health plans across the country to provide students with essential pediatric health care they can easily access through their school. Hazel’s licensed providers deliver teletherapy and virtual care—in school or at home—to more than four million K-12 students regardless of their ability to pay.

In the coming weeks, HISD and Hazel Health will hold community events to demonstrate how telehealth visits work and to support campuses and families in accessing the available services.

Are You and Your Fiancée on the Same Financial Page?

Addressing the future: As a couple, it’s important to share your vision of what the future holds, whether that involves buying a home, raising children, traveling the world or planning for an early retirement. Now is the time to create a road map for achieving your individual and shared goals. This should include practical considerations, such as how you will divide financial responsibilities and whether you will combine your savings and investments. Having these conversations now can help you avoid surprises down the line.

Wedding budgeting: A 2019 study from Lending Tree revealed that 45% of couples married within the previous two years accrued wedding-related debt, with nearly half of those couples contemplating divorce as a result.

A CFP® professional can help you avoid debt and create a realistic budget that prioritizes which wedding day expenses are most important to you.

Special considerations: Your financial plan may involve special considerations. For example, if you’re over age 50 and marrying for the second time, you may want to focus on retirement, legacies and living wills. If you’re part of the LGTBQ+ community and live in a state without robust anti-discrimination laws, you’ll want to ensure that your strategy protects you both. Your financial advisor can walk you through what to consider based on your circumstances.

inding the love of your life can be tricky, but what can be even trickier is making sure you’re both on the same financial page before you walk down the aisle.

While it may not sound like the most romantic aspect of wedding planning, getting aligned on money matters can safeguard your relationship against one of the most common sources of marital strife. Here are a few ways a professional can help:

Getting aligned: A person’s “money story” is informed by how they were raised, experiences they’ve had or financial lessons they’ve learned — and everyone’s story is unique. A CFP® professional does more than crunch numbers. They help you understand your personal money story to facilitate productive discussions about spending, saving and other financial matters.

Addressing the past: If either of you brings debt to the marriage, it’s essential to be transparent about the type and amount of debt, even if you intend to keep your finances separate. Debt can affect your ability to pay for daily expenses and save for the future. Your financial advisor can help you create a repayment plan.

Don’t wait until you’ve tied the knot to address important financial issues with your spouse. Let a professional who will be committed to acting in your best interests get the ball rolling.

Conversations about money are not always easy. However, setting a precedent for open communication around money during your engagement can pave the way for a healthy marriage.

THE GREAT DEBATE

Adopting vs. Purchasing a Pet from a Breeder

ADOPTING A PET: Saving Lives and Finding a Companion

etting a new pet can be a major decision in our personal lives and households. This may spark an important debate: do you adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue organization, or do you purchase one from a breeder? This question explores various aspects of pet ownership including ethical choice, personal preferences, and lifestyle.

It’s worth noting that 54% of African Americans owned a household pet, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA). African American households are more likely to own pets compared to other demographic groups. For many Black individuals and families, pets play a vital role in providing com panionship to their owners and are cherished members of the household.

In major cities like Houston, Texas, where the pet population is substantial, this debate gains added significance. There are reported to be up to 1 million homeless pets in the Houston area alone. According to statistics from the ASPCA, approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. This emphasizes the importance of responsible pet ownership.

When you adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue organization, you’re not just gaining a new family member; you’re also saving a life. Many animals in shelters are there through no fault of their own – abandoned, surrendered, or lost and in need of loving homes. In Houston, Texas, where the homeless pet population is particularly significant, organizations like the Houston SPCA, BARC Animal Shelter, Harris County Pets, and Houston Humane Society work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need. By adopting from these organizations, individuals can find a new furry family member and directly contribute to reducing pet overpopulation.

THE BENEFITS OF CHOOSING A BREEDER:

Selection and preference. On the other hand, some people prefer to purchase a pet from a breeder for various reasons. Breeders often specialize in specific breeds, offering potential pet owners the opportunity to select a companion with particular traits, characteristics, and temperament. Although purchasing from a breeder may come with a higher upfront cost compared to shelter adoptions, some individuals prefer a specific breed and value the information that comes with knowing the pet’s background and lineage. Unfortunately, some breeders find that there are not enough homes found for the pets they have bred and often many of them end

MAKING AN INFORMED DECISION

Ultimately, the decision to adopt or purchase a pet is deeply personal and should be made with thoughtful consideration. No matter if you adopt from a shelter or buy from a breeder, the key is to offer a loving, caring, and permanent home for your new pet. Best wishes in finding your perfect pet!

Tips for a Successful Home Renovation

hether you’re buying a fixer-upper or updating your current home, renovations will improve the functionality of your property and increase its value. Here’s your guide for making the process successful: Set a goal: Prioritize renovations that help you meet your goals. For example, if you’d like to elevate your home’s aesthetic appeal, consider projects like landscaping the front yard or refurbishing a highly-trafficked room. If you’re more interested in guarding your home against natural disasters, consider exterior updates such as replacing the roof or windows.

FIND INSPIRATION: Browse home improvement magazines, websites and social media platforms for visual inspiration. Keep a collection of images and ideas that you can use to communicate with your contractor or designer.

CALCULATE

RETURN ON INVESTMENT:

Certain projects can substantially reduce your utility bills while others can make your home more valuable when it’s time to sell. When calculating your renovation budget, don’t forget to factor in the projected return on investment.

BUILD A BUDGET: You’ll need a budget worksheet to help you avoid overspending. Be sure to include a contingency reserve to pay for the inevitable unexpected costs that emerge along the way. If you’re short on needed funds, explore financing options with your lender. In some cases, accessing the equity you have built up in your home through refinancing or taking out a second mortgage can help cover the costs.

SELECT YOUR CONTRACTOR: The contractor is critical to the success of your renovation. Get recommendations from trusted sources, including friends, family and verified online resources. Meet with multiple contractors to discuss your project and request bids to gain a more thorough understanding of project costs and which contractor can best meet your goals. Of course, don’t forget to verify their qualifications. Ask for project references and documentation to confirm they have the proper licensing and liability insurance. Once you’ve found the right contractor, make sure your agreement is in writing to avoid potential disputes. The contract should contain a budget, scope of work and payment schedule that all parties have agreed upon.

DEVELOP YOUR PROJECT: Work with your contractor to develop a realistic timeline for your project that builds in extra time for unexpected delays. Before the work starts, you should also work with your contractor to obtain any permits needed and start sourcing materials.

START BUILDING: Regular meetings with your contractor can help ensure that everything is on schedule, and that you are in the loop on any plan modifications. If changes are needed, make sure they’re submitted in writing as a change order. No matter how thorough your specifications are, you should be prepared for unexpected issues along the way. So be flexible and work with a trusted contractor to find practical solutions to issues that arise. Conduct a final inspection once all renovations have been completed and make sure to address any issues with the contractor before making your final payment. Home renovations can make your home safer, more beautiful, more eco-friendly and more valuable, and with the right preparation and execution, you can complete your project on time and under budget.

5 ESSENTIALS for Homeowners NAVIGATING Construction Contracts

n today’s construction landscape, homeowners-to-be encounter numerous challenges, like budget overruns and delays. This is why selecting the right contractor and thoroughly scrutinizing the contract are crucial.

IHere are five key elements to consider for a successful construction and the results of an Ipsos and Hover survey of 500 adults involved in home renovation projects.

A DETAILED PLANNING PROCESS: There should be a comprehensive planning phase that lays the groundwork for precise budgets, schedules and scopes. This aligns with findings from the survey, which reveal that 58% of homeowners experienced time delays averaging about 40 days. A thorough planning process mitigates ambiguity and sets realistic expectations from the outset, preventing costly delays down the line.

TRANSPARENCY THROUGHOUT: With a traditional “cost plus” contract, transparency can be limited to monthly cost breakdowns after completion. Instead, prioritize a contract that promises transparency from conception. According to the survey, more than a third of homeowners reported paying more than the original quote, with the additional costs averaging $19,000. Contracts should ensure continuous insight into project costs, schedule updates and scope changes, empowering homeowners to make informed decisions and maintain control over their investment.

CLIENT INVOLVEMENT: “Client control” is encouraged and stresses active participation in the planning phase. The survey shows nearly half of homeowners faced avoidable issues, causing strained relationships and setbacks. Contracts should foster teamwork, keep clients informed and engaged in decision-making, and reduce misunderstandings for a smoother construction process.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION: The role of technology in managing projects for real-time access to project data is

crucial. It helps improve transparency and communication between contractors and homeowners. The survey highlights that 31% of homeowners find budgeting the most challenging aspect of the process, emphasizing the importance of streamlined systems for clarity and efficiency.

TRUST AND REPUTATION: Trust is paramount in the homeowner-contractor relationship, with reputation ranking as the most important characteristic for homeowners when selecting a contractor. The survey reveals that half of homeowners prioritize fair pricing, while 40% value contractor knowledge and 35% emphasize good communication skills. Contracts should reflect these priorities, instilling confidence in homeowners and fostering strong partnerships built on trust and reliability. By prioritizing these elements in a contractor’s contract, homeowners can navigate construction confidently, mitigating risks and ensuring a positive outcome. Reviewing and understanding these aspects of the contract is crucial for safeguarding investments and achieving project success.

ooking for a fun yet healthy summer meal that can go on the grill? This turkey burger recipe will satisfy your tastebuds and will be a great addition to the family cookout.

LINGREDIENTS

1 pound ground turkey

¼ cup breadcrumbs

1 egg, lightly beaten

¼ cup finely chopped onion

1 clove garlic, minced

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)

½ teaspoon dried oregano (optional)

Olive oil (for grilling)

4 burger buns

OPTIONAL TOPPINGS

Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese, etc.

DIRECTIONS

1. Prepare the Patty Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and oregano. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

2. Form the Patties

Divide the mixture into four equal parts and shape them into patties about 1/2 inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to help them cook evenly and prevent them from puffing up.

3. Preheat the Grill

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If using a charcoal grill, make sure the coals are evenly distributed. Brush the grill grates with olive oil to prevent the patties from sticking.

4. Grill the Patties

Place the patties on the preheated grill. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Avoid pressing down on the patties with a spatula, as this can dry them out.

5. Toast the Buns (Optional):

During the last few minutes of cooking, place the burger buns on the grill, cut side down, and toast until they are golden brown.

6. Assemble the Burgers:

- Place the cooked turkey patties on the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Add your favorite toppings and condiments. Cover with the top halves of the buns.

7. Serve:

Serve the grilled turkey burgers immediately with your favorite sides.

Enjoy your delicious and healthy grilled turkey burgers!

o you plan on booking a cruise anytime soon?

If so, you’ll want to beware of any scammers trying to take your money while you prepare for your great escape.

The risk of being scammed while booking cruises is significant, and it’s essential to be aware of the statistics and strategies to avoid such pitfalls. The Federal Trade Commission reported that in 2022, consumers lost nearly $8.8 billion to scams, an increase of more than 30% over the previous year. This includes various types of fraud, such as those related to travel bookings.

Cruise booking scams can occur through fake websites, fraudulent travel agencies, and deceptive robocalls offering too-good-to-be-true deals. It’s crucial to recognize the warning signs, including requests for payment via

non-traditional methods like wire transfers or gift cards, high-pressure sales tactics, and discrepancies in contact information.

TO PROTECT YOURSELF, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING TIPS:

1. Book through reputable sources: Use official cruise line websites or trusted travel agencies. Verify the agency’s credentials and check for reviews and ratings from other travelers.

2. Be cautious with unsolicited offers: Be wary of unexpected emails, phone calls, or social media messages offering exclusive deals or free cruises. Verify the offer directly with the cruise line or through a trusted travel advisor.

3. Use secure payment methods: Always use credit cards for bookings, as they offer better fraud protection, compared to debit cards or other payment methods. Avoid wire transfers and prepaid cards.

4. Check for red flags: Look out for poorly designed websites, suspiciously low prices, and requests for immediate payment. Legitimate offers will provide clear and detailed information without pressuring you to act quickly.

5. Read the fine print: Understand the terms and conditions of your booking, including cancellation policies and any additional fees. Ensure you have travel insurance to cover unexpected issues.

By staying vigilant and informed, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to cruise booking scams this summer.
