The Texas 1000 Project’s LLC Grant and Funding Readiness Program aims to provide business owners with a grant of up to $500 for the registration and fees of the State of Texas Limited Liability Corporation formation. According to organization founder and executive director Booker T. Spencer, the program is not just a course—it’s a transformative force and a driver of economic empowerment.
This grant was created to provide business owners with the necessary resources to compete effectively in today’s business landscape.
“The Texas 1000 Project is a technical assistance program designed to dismantle barriers in entrepreneurship and facilitate opportunities for economic and social advancement,”
Booker T., who is also a certified career coach, said. “The pandemic brought about an interesting situation where people were getting laid off their jobs and because I’m an entrepreneur in the market, a lot of people were coming to me asking about advice for start-up entrepreneurship, but what we noticed is that people didn’t have a lot of start-up capital.”
The program equips diverse entrepreneurs, especially from Black and Brown communities, with essential skills to navigate complex funding challenges effectively. By enabling access to crucial capital, the organization is fostering a robust, inclusive entrepreneurial landscape in Texas, advancing one LLC at a time.
Booker T. says the organization started off doing technical assistance for small businesses but noticed that alone wasn’t enough. The Texas 1000 Project gets its fulfillment by helping those looking to gain insight into entrepreneurship.
“We’re not just talking the talk, but we’re assisting start-up entrepreneurs to get to that next level. It helps people to know that their idea is viable, and it is a business,” Booker T. said. So far, the Texas 1000 Project has established eight LLCs. The organization intends to help 12 more business owners establish their LLCs by the end of the year. The organization has assisted over 120 start-up businesses through several training classes based on scalable concepts and enterprise thinking.
Program Qualifications
In order to participate in the Limited Liability Corporation Grant Four-Week Program, applicants must:
• Be at least 18 years old.
• Possess a valid identification card or Texas driver’s license.
• Provide posted mail with their name that matches the provided ID or driver’s license.
• Demonstrate they have a personal bank account or a registered D.B.A. (Doing Business As) entity in Texas within the past eight (8) to 12 months.
• Show proof of eight to 12 months of sales.
Applicants are required to complete a mini business plan within 30 days, including two to fiveyear goals worksheets. The LLC being formed must be the applicant’s first LLC in the State of Texas. Applicants must also be capable of opening a business checking account.
Participants must attend two of our virtual online training classes as part of the program requirements.
Booker T. encourages applicants to have an open mind.
“Get ready to be introduced to incite that you may not have heard before, as it relates to entrepreneurship,” he said.

Houston City Council Passes Fiscal 2025 Budget

ouston City Council voted on Wednesday, June 12 to adopt Mayor John Whitmire’s proposed FY 2025 budget, emphasizing public safety, drainage, and infrastructure, including generators for multiservice centers to protect Houstonians during extreme weather emergencies.
HThe budget does not include any new fees or tax increases.
“This is a responsible budget that we can present to the public,” said Mayor Whitmire, reaffirming his commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility.
The new FY25 General Fund Expenditure Budget, totaling $3.03 billion an increase of $74.3 million, reflects a $12 million expenditure increase from adopted budget amendments. This increase, the slowest in four years, demonstrates the administration’s commitment to strong financial management, with growth in expenditures kept below the rate of inflation.
The budget also funds six police and five fire cadet classes. It incorporates $11.7 million of general fund reductions primarily attributable to vacancy reductions. This includes
items allowing the city to build towards a more sustainable structural budget in FY ‘26. The adopted budget preserves an unrestricted fund balance of approximately $86 million above the policy-required 7.5% reserve.
“This budget is paid for. So now, after we go through the next months into the fall, cutting out duplication and waste, we will conduct audit reviews and come out with a good government proposal to the citizens of Houston, collaborating on the county, state, and federal levels,” said Mayor Whitmire. “Let everyone know we have a great city and great people, but we have challenges, and if we meet those challenges, we will have a very bright future for our young people.”
The new fiscal year began on July 1, 2024. Also, during the June 12 meeting, the city council voted to approve a historic bond agreement to finance backpay and other benefits owed to Houston firefighters. The council did not vote on a proposed collective bargaining agreement because the city controller had not certified the funds to cover the CBA. The item is expected to appear on next week’s city council agenda.

$650M Collective Bargaining Agreement for Houston Firefighters Passes

Houston City Council passed the $650 million collective bargaining agreement for Houston firefighters on Tuesday, June 18.
The vote helps end a battle for salary and benefits dating back to 2016. At the city council meeting on Wednesday, June 12, members voted 14 to 3 to approve the historic bond to fund the firefighter settlement.
“For too long, Houston firefighters have remained dedicated to protecting us while they worked without a contract and other benefits,” a newsletter from Mayor John Whitmire said. “This achievement is the result of extensive discussions and collaboration among various departments and stakeholders, all committed to ensuring that the voices of our firefighters are heard.”
While it is suspected to be challenging to pay for the agreement, Mayor Whitmire says the city cannot afford not to move forward and “it is a reasonable settlement.”

URGENT NEED to SECURE GUNS as Firearm Injuries and Deaths Surge Among CHILDREN AND YOUTH
The community needs to wake up to some critical truths about gun safety:

un safety isn’t just a policy issue—it’s a matter of life and death impacting countless families across the nation. Firearms have tragically become the leading cause of death for children and teens aged 1 to 19 in the United States. Recent years have seen a troubling rise in firearm injuries and fatalities, impacting our youth at an alarming rate. Gun-related deaths among Black youth have tragically surged, with a disturbing 108.3% increase from 2013 to 2020. This is in stark contrast to the 47.8% rise seen among White youth during the same period. For our communities, gun safety must transcend mere discussion—it’s an urgent call to action to safeguard our children and prioritize firearm safety.
The Jorden family knows all too well the heart-wrenching consequences of unsecured guns. Their world shattered on a seemingly ordinary Friday evening, June 11, 2010, when 15-year-old Seanton Jorden was shot point-blank in the head with a pellet gun at a friend’s home while playing video games. Seanton had visited this friend’s home before, but on that day, his mother Latrice had an unsettling feeling and asked Seanton if his friend’s house had any guns. Seanton mentioned a pellet gun, and Latrice firmly advised him to come home immediately if he saw it out. Hours later, Devon Jorden received a phone call that would forever haunt him. It wasn’t Seanton on the other end but the uncle who lived in the friend’s home, delivering the devastating news that Seanton had been shot in the head with a pellet gun and was being LifeFlighted to Memorial Hermann.
It wasn’t the homeowner’s child who pulled the trigger, but another friend who had come over to play video games. The pellet gun, lying unsecured in the boy’s room, resulted in Seanton suffering a traumatic brain injury. This tragic incident underscores a critical lesson—every gun, even a pellet gun, must be secured. You never know the thoughts and actions of other people’s children. Gun safety is paramount; it’s a matter of protecting our children and teens from preventable firearm injuries. Why was the pellet gun not secured? Perhaps the family underestimated its danger or assumed their child knew better. There’s a dangerous myth that non-powder guns like BB, pellet, and paintball guns are just toys. But these guns, which can fire at the speed of traditional guns, lead to nearly 22,000 injuries each year, especially eye injuries.
• Some parents believe that hiding their guns will prevent children from accessing them. However, 75% of children who live in homes with guns know where they are stored.
• Many parents think their children are not capable of firing a gun. However, children as young as 3 years old may be strong enough to pull the trigger of a handgun.
• Parents believe their children know the difference between real guns and toy guns, but in 16% of unintentional firearm deaths among children younger than 13 years of age, the gun was mistaken for a toy.
• Parents often believe their child would not touch a gun because “he knows better.” However, studies have found that most children will handle a gun if they find one, even if they have been taught not to.

Gun safety isn’t optional—it’s essential to prevent firearm injuries among our children and teens.
Parents have both a legal and moral duty to prevent gun incidents by ensuring their firearms are safely secured. The case of James Crumbley highlights the dire consequences of neglecting this responsibility. James, the father of the Oxford High School shooter, was recently found guilty of involuntary manslaughter—a landmark decision in the U.S. His failure to secure the gun used in the shooting and to seek the necessary mental health support for his son ended in a devastating loss of innocent lives. His wife, Jennifer, also faced the same charges, and both parents were sentenced to at least 10 years in prison. Shockingly, they are the first parents in the U.S. to be convicted in a mass school shooting. “I agree 100% with the decision,” said Devon. “Parents are fully responsible for their children’s actions. Knowing their son had mental health issues, the Crumbleys should never have had an unsecured gun at home. This case should serve as a wake-up call for all parents to be more vigilant about gun safety.”
Around one-third of U.S. homes with children have guns, and alarmingly, about 4.6 million kids live in households with unlocked, loaded firearms. Imagine the danger when even toddlers can stumble upon these guns and have the strength to pull the trigger. You might not fully grasp the magnitude of this risk, but it’s a serious one. Studies show that simply teaching kids about gun safety or telling them not to touch a firearm isn’t enough. To truly protect your loved ones, ensure all guns are locked and unloaded, with ammunition stored separately. Keep the keys or combinations out of reach of curious hands. And never leave loaded, unlocked guns in your car or anywhere on your property.
Devon has some crucial advice for parents before letting their kids visit a friend’s house. “We wish we had discussed gun safety with the adults in the home where our son was injured. If we had, we might have avoided what we’ve been going through for 14 years. Just as you
would talk to a friend’s parent about your child’s food allergies to ensure they aren’t exposed to harmful foods, a conversation about secured guns and firearm injuries should be just as common in our society today.”
Every year, over 21,000 children and teens in our country are tragically shot, either losing their lives or getting injured. With summer here, your kids might be home alone, visiting friends, or having friends over while you’re at work. Now is the perfect moment to talk about gun safety if you haven’t already. HISD OPENS SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM

Houston Independent School District’s annual Summer Feeding Program will be open through Friday, July 19
The program provides any child up to age 18, and enrolled HISD students with disabilities up to age 21, with healthy, no-cost meals during the summer school break. These meals help ensure students who rely on school meals during the academic year have continued access to good nutrition throughout summer vacation and return to school healthy and ready to learn in the fall.
An initiative of HISD Nutrition Services, the Summer Feeding Program operates Monday through Friday, with breakfast meal service each day from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. and lunch meal service from 11 a.m. to noon (or later, as specified by individual campuses with more than one lunch period). HISD Announces Preliminary 2024 STAAR High School End of Course Results

The Houston Independent School District shared preliminary results for the STAAR Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and U.S. History End of Course Exams Wednesday, June 5.
HISD said students made “substantial gains” in four of five tested subjects, and in some cases far exceeded pre-COVID proficiency levels. While meaningful gains were made across the district, officials said HISD’s New Education System campuses grew at least five points in every tested subject, and in Algebra I and Biology these campuses achieved explosive double-digit growth in the number of students proficient.
“Our students and teachers did exceptional work this school year,” said Superintendent Mike Miles. “This has been a challenging year in unusual circumstances, and I am unbelievably proud of what this HISD community has accomplished together. When all the results are in, I believe HISD will have achieved some of the biggest proficiency gains in its history.”
The STAAR exams are the State of Texas indicator of how proficient students are in a given subject area. The assessment is administered only one time a year
and while it is only a snapshot of proficiency, HISD’s results indicate that many more students are meeting or exceeding grade level standards in most tested subjects. Typically, one to two points in proficiency growth on STAAR is acceptable growth. At the district level, an increase of three or more percentage points over the previous year’s score is strong growth.
HISD said it is focusing on the “Meets or Exceeds” score to gauge success. While HISD will report the “Approaches” data when available, it is a lower bar than Meets or Exceeds, and HISD school leaders focus on the higher standard, which represents proficiency.
“HISD still has much work to do to increase proficiency for all students, but STAAR tells us that we are headed in the right direction,” explained Superintendent Miles. “This data shows we are improving struggling schools and closing achievement gaps that have been too big for too long.”
HISD released preliminary STAAR results for grades 3-8 on June 11. The Texas Education Agency released statewide data for STAAR High School End of Course exams on June 7, and for STAAR exams in grades 3-8 on June 14.

raduating college? If you’re like many young adults, this is the first time you’ll be managing your finances independently. There’s more to it than ensuring you have enough money in the bank to pay for your next bill.
Finance professionals say these five strategies can help you hit the ground running during this transitional phase of life:
1. Live without regret: According to a 2020 NerdWallet study, 83% of Gen Zers and millennials have experienced regret about spending decisions. Break the cycle of spending too much and stressing afterward by creating a spending plan that prioritizes the expenditures you value most. Remember, finding a budgeting framework that builds confidence and security without feeling restrictive may require trial and error.
2. Make sound housing decisions: To say that buying a home is always better than renting oversimplifies a complex calculus. Renting — with or without roommates — may actually make more sense for a young adult’s lifestyle. While homeownership comes with the benefits of builtup equity and potential real estate appreciation over time, it also means being on the hook to fix issues like leaky plumbing and broken appliances as they arise. And while you could pay someone to attend to these tasks, that’s something you’ll need to account for in your cost-benefit analysis. Before making a major financial commitment, talk to a professional to figure out whether renting or owning is right for you now.
3. Pay yourself first: In financial speak, “compounding” means earning returns on both the initial investment and the previously acquired returns. It’s a powerful phenomenon both when saving for retirement and with any other investing you do, particularly if you start young. While it’s easy to be distracted by imminent expenses, you should regard saving and investing as “paying yourself first.” Set aside a consistent portion of your income to your own savings before attending to other obligations. After you’ve established a sufficient emergency fund, seeking the guidance of a financial advisor is a smart way to ensure that investments are properly diversified to be in line with your risk tolerance, time horizon and goals.
4. Look way, way ahead: Plan for retirement now? That advice can sound unbelievable when you’re just starting your career. But the earlier you can make retirement
contributions, the better off you will be. Don’t just sock retirement money away into a typical savings account, however. You’ll earn more with a dedicated retirement plan, such as an employer-sponsored 401(k), 403(b) or 457, particularly if your company offers matching or profit sharing.
Another option is an individual retirement account (IRA). Whether you open a Roth or traditional IRA, you won’t pay taxes during the life of the account. So, take this as your sign to get out there! But, in addition to the right footwear, a killer playlist and an interesting route for your workout, it’s vital to focus on nutrition. Regardless of the distance or duration of your run, sports nutrition is an important key to your performance.
Most runners know they should get some carbs, protein, and stay hydrated. But how much, and when? Before, during or after your run? Dana Ryan, Ph.D., MA, MBA, director of Sports Performance, Nutrition and Education and Chair of the Fitness Advisory Board at Herbalife, offers these tips to get moving with good nutrition. Start with the basics. Whether you’re a distance runner or a new jogger working up to your first mile, a good basic diet is the building block for great performance. Fruits, veggies, lean protein, healthy fats and good carbohydrates are a must.
Pre-workout boost. As you near your run, you want to focus on liquids. One to two hours before your workout, drink a protein shake that includes carbohydrates. Protein helps your brain and body function and gives you an energy boost, and those carbs keep you going. Within 30 minutes of your run, a pre-workout drink that contains caffeine and nitric oxide precursors is a good option. The two things you want to avoid pre-workout are fiber and fat as they are hard for the body to digest.
Hydrate! This is vital before, during and after your workout. Proper hydration is essential not only for general body functions, but also boosts performance and mitigates dehydration during running. Runners need to maintain body water balance, because water provides nourishment that the body needs for almost every single function. It also helps limit changes in body temperature. For hydration, water alone is great. Water with electrolytes kicks it up a notch.
Carb it up. For many dieters, carbs are taboo. But for runners, or people who do other high-intensity workouts, carbs are key to performance. If you’ve ever run out of steam or hit a wall during a workout, it could be because you’re low on carbs. While running, it’s crucial to replace what the body is losing, namely carbohydrates and electrolytes. One’s body fatigues because of the depletion of carbohydrate reserves and dehydration due to loss of water and electrolytes in sweat, both of which hinder sports performance. So, for every hour of running, consume about 30 to 60 grams of carbohydrates through a sports drink.
Finish with protein. Immediately following the completion of a run, make sure to get some protein in. Within 30 minutes of finishing your workout, consume 20 to 40 grams of high-quality protein, no matter how long the run was. And for those longer runs, add in some carbohydrates to be closer to a 3:1 carbohydrate-to-protein ratio. Why? Protein after a run helps your muscles repair and recover. The amino acids in protein help build lean muscle, which is exactly what you want.

Mental health is closely linked to physical health; poor mental health can lead to chronic stress, heart disease, and weakened immune function, while good mental health promotes healthier lifestyle choices and lessens the impact of stress-related illnesses.
Beyond individual resilience, our mental health significantly influences our social connections and productivity – how we relate to each other. Positive mental health fosters effective communication, empathy, and the ability to support others, which are crucial for maintaining strong personal and professional relationships. It also aids in managing conflicts constructively, enhancing relationship quality.
Finally, mental health is foundational to self-esteem, stress management, and overall quality of life. It enables individuals to view themselves positively, fostering confidence and a sense of competence. This self-esteem is crucial for making sound decisions, setting goals, and pursuing aspirations. While all of this is good to know, in many minority communities, mental health remains a topic wrapped in shame and misunderstanding. When the reluctance to openly discuss mental health issues is combined
with systemic barriers to accessing care – it results in significant disparities in mental health outcomes among minority populations. These disparities are rooted in various factors, including socioeconomic barriers, cultural stigmas, and systemic barriers. Socioeconomic status plays a significant role
in mental health outcomes. Our socioeconomic status is like a score or a measure of a person’s economic and social position based on their income, education and occupation, compared to others. In comparison to other communities, minority communities often face higher rates of poverty, unemployment, and underemployment, which can worsen mental health issues. Financial constraints limit access to quality mental health services, leading to untreated conditions and declining health.
Cultural beliefs and stigmas surrounding mental health significantly impact minority communities. In many cultures, mental health issues are seen as a sign of weakness or failure. This stigma can discourage individuals from seeking help, leading to people feeling ashamed and experiencing worsened conditions, isolation and increased stress. For example, in many Black and Latino communities, mental health struggles are often kept within the family, and seeking outside help can be perceived as a betrayal or failure.
Systemic barriers, including a lack of culturally competent healthcare providers, contribute to the disparities in mental health care for minorities. Many mental health professionals lack the training to understand and address the unique cultural contexts and experiences of minority patients. This cultural disconnect can lead to misdiagnoses, ineffective treatment plans, and a general mistrust of the healthcare system.

terine fibroids are a form of noncancerous growth that can grow inside and outside of your uterus. Fibroids do not always create symptoms, but when they do, they may cause heavy menstrual bleeding, back pain, frequent urination, and sex pain. Small fibroids rarely require treatment, while bigger fibroids may require medication or surgery.
UFibroids are a form of pelvic tumor that is fairly frequent. Fibroids affect between 40 and 80% of women. Many women, however, are unaware that they have fibroids since they do not feel any symptoms. This can happen if you have little fibroids that are asymptomatic, meaning they don’t give you any discomfort.

WHAT ARE UTERINE FIBROIDS?
Fibroids are noncancerous uterine growths that commonly arise during pregnancy. Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or myomas, aren’t linked to an elevated risk of uterine cancer and usually never develop into cancer. They can range in size from tiny seedlings that are undetectable to enormous masses that deform and expand the uterus. You can have only one fibroid or several, which having multiple fibroids can cause the uterus to enlarge to the point where it reaches the rib cage, causing weight gain. Uterine fibroids affect many women at some point in their life. However, because uterine fibroids seldom cause symptoms, you may be unaware that you have them. During a pelvic exam or a prenatal ultrasound, your doctor may uncover fibroids by chance.
WHAT CAUSES UTERINE FIBROIDS TO GROW?
Fibroids have been connected to the hormone estrogen, however, the specific etiology is uncertain (the female reproductive hormone produced by the ovaries). Fibroids most commonly appear during a woman’s reproductive years (around the ages of 16 to 50), when estrogen levels are at their maximum.
After estrogen levels are low, such as during menopause, when a woman’s monthly periods finish, they decrease.
Uterine fibroids are thought to arise from a stem cell in the uterus’ smooth muscle tissue (myometrium). A single cell divides many times, eventually forming a solid, rubbery mass that is separate from surrounding tissue. What’s more, fibroids have a variety of growth patterns: they might grow slowly or quickly, or they can stay the same size. Some fibroids experience growth spurts, while others may diminish on their own.

OF UTERINE FIBROIDS
Three main types of uterine fibroids can grow anywhere in the womb and have various sizes that can range from very little to considerably big (think about a pea and a melon, for example).

• Intramural Fibroids – It is the most common type of fibroid and develops in the muscle wall of the womb.
• Subserosal Fibroids – Fibroids that sprout outside the womb’s wall and into the pelvis and can grow to be quite enormous.
• Submucosal Fibroids – These fibroids originate in the muscular layer beneath the womb’s inner lining and grow into the cavity of the womb.
Subserosal or submucosal fibroids are sometimes linked to the womb by a thin stalk of tissue. Pedunculated fibroids are what they’re called.

EFFECTS OF UTERINE FIBROIDS
There are many side effects of uterine fibroids that can seriously compromise your health if not detected and treated properly. Intramural fibroids’ symptoms can range from mild to painful for those who suffer from them. Lower back pain, heavy periods lasting more than 10 days, bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, and exhaustion are all possible side effects.
They can also cause anemia and iron deficiency as a result of blood loss during a woman’s menstrual cycle. Because intramural fibroids are located directly inside the uterine cavity, if they grow too large (more than 6 cm in diameter), they begin to take over the space normally reserved for an embryo to grow, causing many difficulties and jeopardizing fertility.
Subserosal fibroids can result in significant pelvic pain as well as pressure on the surrounding organs. Subserosal fibroids grow on the outside of the uterus, unlike intramural and submucosal fibroids, which grow on the inside of the uterus, causing different symptoms. The most significant difference is that subserosal fibroids appear to affect neighboring organs such as the bladder more than the uterus. Submucosal fibroids may obstruct and deform fallopian tubes, making sperm passage to the uterus for implantation impossible. For women with fibroids, this disruption is frequently what causes fertility problems. Furthermore, submucosal fibroids can cause pregnancy difficulties. There is insufficient room for the fetus to grow as the fibroids get larger and push into the uterine cavity. As a result, this problem could lead to a miscarriage or birth abnormalities.
UTERINE FIBROIDS TREATMENT
If there are no symptoms, fibroids do not need to be treated. Without treatment, they usually decrease and disappear over time, especially after menopause. If you have fibroids-related symptoms, you will most likely be prescribed medication to help relieve them.
There are various medications that can aid in the reduction of fibroids. If these fail to work, surgery or other, less invasive techniques may be suggested.

early 25 million people of all ages in the United States are living with asthma, a lifelong chronic disease that makes it harder to move air in and out of the lungs. Here’s what the American Lung Association wants everyone to know during summer, when extreme heat can make asthma harder to manage.
1. NEW CHALLENGES ARE EMERGING.
Beyond traditional asthma triggers like respiratory infections, secondhand smoke and pets, new challenges are emerging. The effects of climate change

2. CITY DWELLERS ARE PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE.
Two-thirds of the average U.S. city is made up of roads, parking spaces, sidewalks and roofs. Since these surfaces are typically dark and non-porous, they contribute to flooding, increased air pollution, poor health and what is known as “urban heat,” a phenomenon in which cities experience warmer temperatures than surrounding areas. Urban heat, combined with pollutants from power plants, motor vehicles and other pollution sources, creates ozone pollution, also known as smog. Those with asthma can experience symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing from both ground-level ozone and particle pollution, as well as from the impacts of extreme weather and airborne allergens. Sadly, these issues disproportionally impact certain communities. Due to a history of discriminatory practices like systematic denial of mortgages, insurance loans, and other financial services on the basis of race and ethnicity, Black and Indigenous people, and other people of color, are more likely to be living in areas impacted by urban heat and poor air quality.
3. FLOODING CAN HARM LUNG HEALTH.
Increased severe storms due to climate change results in more flooding, which can harm lung health. Chemicals, sewage, oil, gas and other dangerous substances found in floodwaters can pose health risks, and mold, associated with asthma attacks, can grow anywhere there is water or dampness.
4. ADVOCACY EFFORTS ARE UNDERWAY.
The Smart Surfaces Coalition is made up of 40 national and international organizations committed to making Smart Surfaces the global urban design standard. Smart Surfaces encompass a suite of cutting-edge technologies, including reflective (cool) roofs and pavements, green roofs, trees, solar panels and rain gardens. Designed to mitigate urban heat, enhance air quality and improve health, these transformative urban features can cool cities by 5 degrees F, reduce flooding, provide economic benefits and potentially advance environmental justice.
The American Lung Association, an active member of the Smart Surfaces Coalition, encourages cities to take these actions:
• Install light-colored roads, parking lots and driveways to reflect sunlight and reduce heat.
• Install solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity and provide shade for roofs.
• Plant trees to increase shade.
• Select porous surfaces to collect polluted stormwater, soak it into the ground, and filter out pollution.
Other strategies to reduce urban heat, air pollution and ozone levels include using public transportation carpooling, increasing green spaces and installing cooling centers in extreme conditions.
5. RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE.
Educational programming can help people better manage the disease in summer and year-round. While insurance coverage for genetic testing varies, studies show a willingness among women to bear screening costs, underscoring the importance of informed decision-making. Despite the perceived low absolute risk for blood clots among individuals with genetic clotting disorders, personal factors must be considered. Tailored approaches to contraceptive decisions, guided by individual risk profiles, may be warranted, especially in certain popu lations with higher rates of genetic clotting disorders.
For individuals with genetic throm bophilia, contraceptive options such as copper IUDs or pro gestin-only pills offer effective alternatives without increas ing clotting risks. Prioritizing safety and effectiveness is paramount in contraceptive decision-making.

If you ever receive an email about a package delivery or unpaid online postage charges, usually with the subject line, “Delivery Failure Notification,” be careful. These phishing emails appear to be from notable companies and agencies but they are not and you should not interact with them. The phishing emails may contain either a spoofed or fake URL for you to follow or a file that if opened, can activate a virus, both resulting in stealing your personal information.
How can you tell if an email is NOT from a notable business or agency? If the email requests “immediate action,” has poor grammar and spelling errors, asks you to confirm PII or asks for payment of any kind, you’re likely dealing with a phishing email.

Scammers call from a number that may look familiar or even appear to be from a legitimate source, like your bank or a government agency. The caller, however, is anything but legit. They may claim there’s an issue with your account or a problem that requires your immediate attention. Then the scammers will ask for sensitive information like Social Security numbers, credit card details or passwords.
TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM VISHING:
• Verify the identity of the caller
• Ask yourself why the caller is asking for your information
• Never give out sensitive information over the phone
• Report the call to the alleged bank, government agency or company
• Block spam callers

QUISHING
QR codes are incredibly common nowadays. You’ve probably seen them on posters, food menus and TV screens. Take caution before you scan. Some QR codes may be a form of phishing known as quishing.
If you receive a message from an unfamiliar email address or text message or find a poster in a high-traffic location, don’t scan it. If you do, the QR code could take you to a scammer’s website (which may look legitimate) but is designed to scam you out of your PII.
If you find or receive a suspicious QR code:
• Don’t scan it, especially if the message or poster urges you to act immediately
• Report the QR code to the bank, government agency or company that the scam artist is impersonating
