NATIONAL BLACK BUSINESS MONTH

A Call to Action for Supporting Black-Owned Businesses

ational Black Business Month, observed every August, provides an essential opportunity to honor and acknowledge the profound contributions of Black-owned businesses to the U.S. economy. This month calls us to support Black-owned businesses and remain committed to ensuring their enduring success.

Black-owned businesses are vital catalysts for innovation and community development. The healthcare and social assistance sector notably stands out as the most common area for these enterprises. With 3.7 million Black-owned enterprises in the U.S., they account for 11.3% of all businesses, closely aligning with the 13% of the Black population. However, only 2.7%, or 161,422, of U.S. employer firms are Black-owned. Since employer firms are generally more profitable and encounter fewer obstacles in securing credit, increasing the proportion of Black-owned employer firms is essential to bolstering the success of Black entrepreneurs.

Securing business funding is a significant hurdle for Black entrepreneurs. While 84% of businesses led by people of color rely on personal savings, friends, or family for initial funding, only 28% have successfully obtained business loans. In contrast, 48% of whiteowned startups have managed to secure such loans, highlighting the financial challenges faced by Black business owners. Alarmingly, 47% of Black entrepreneurs who apply for a loan are denied . WHAT’S BEHIND THESE HURDLES?

According to Forbes, structural racism and power imbalances are driving discriminatory financial practices that hinder growth, particularly in early-stage financing. The venture capital (VC) ecosystem is notably biased towards startups led by white males. A significant issue is the stark lack of representation, with less than 1% of U.S. venture capital-backed firms being Black-owned. This underrepresentation extends to decision-making roles within VC firms, exacerbating the problem.

The wealth disparity continues because banks and institutional investors often have biased funding practices against Black founders. These investors usually require collateral assets, which many Black founders lack. Banks tend to favor applicants with plenty of collateral and cash, which often disadvantages Black business owners. According to the Pew Research Center, the financial inequality is stark. The median wealth of White households is 20 times greater than

that of Black households. This racial wealth gap makes it difficult for many Black owners to secure loans.

Consequently, minority business owners are less likely to have the expensive assets or homes that banks prefer as collateral, placing non-minority founders at a distinct advantage with 16% more capital. Perfect credit scores, which often serve as proxies for business loans, are typically linked to wealth. The average minority owner’s credit score is around 707, roughly 15 points lower than comparable small business owners.

Tackling these challenges demands a well-rounded strategy that includes funding initiatives, mentorship programs, community support, and educational resources. How can we ensure government agencies, programs, corporations, and banks are held accountable for addressing funding disparities and creating opportunities for Black entrepreneurs? One way is through transparency and account ability measures. This can include regular reporting on diversity and inclusion efforts, as well as setting specific targets and goals for promoting Black entrepreneurship. Additionally, working with these agencies to implement diversity and inclusion training programs can help these entities better understand the unique challenges faced by Black entrepreneurs and take steps to address them. Furthermore, incorporating equity into funding deci sion-making processes can help bridge the gap in funding disparities. This means considering factors such as systemic racism, historical dis crimination, and access to resources allocating funds.

While funding disparities exist, Black business owners must take charge of their success. Are you keeping your credit in good standing and ensuring your business is financially stable? Have you sought professional help for effective business growth? Have you explored mentorship programs, resources, or other supportive opportunities? In addition, work together with other Black-owned or non-minority businesses on projects and initiatives. Partnerships matter. Using your skills and expertise to collaborate and partner with other businesses, you can secure more contracts and opportunities, ultimately growing our economy.

Do your due diligence to make your business thrive. If you’ve taken all the necessary steps and still face challenges with agencies and financial institutions, it’s time to advocate for your business. Engage with policymakers to push for initiatives that support the growth and sustainability of Black businesses, also creating equal opportunities for future generations of Black entrepreneurs.

National Black Business Month is not just a celebration—it’s a call to action. By recognizing their achievements and addressing the obstacles they face, we can foster a more equitable and prosperous economy for everyone.

here’s a quote by Steve Maraboli that says, “The greatest way to ‘man-up’ is to empower women,” and we honestly couldn’t have said it better.

The issue of pay equity amongst men and women has been an exhausting but necessary topic as more women continue to shatter glass ceilings while taking on bigger roles in their careers. On average, women earn about $0.77 for every $1 earned by men, according to the International Labour Organization. That means that the global gender pay gap is close to 23%. As of 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau said that women in the U.S. earn about $0.82 for every $1 earned by men. The gap is even wide for women of color-Black women earn about $0.63, Latina women earn about $0.58, and Native American women earn close to $0.60 for every $1 earned by white men.

These numbers prove that the gender pay gap remains a significant issue worldwide. Efforts that can help combat these issues include promoting pay transparency, implementing equitable policies, and supporting women in their career advancement.

6. Challenge Bias: Recognize and challenge unconscious biases in themselves and others that can affect hiring, promotion, and pay decisions.

7. Join and Support Initiatives: Get involved in or support workplace initiatives, committees, and groups focused on gender equality and pay equity.

Men can play a crucial role in advocating for women’s pay equity by taking several proactive steps:

1. Educate Themselves: Understand the statistics and the root causes of the gender pay gap. Awareness is the first step towards meaningful advocacy.

2. Speak Up: Use their voice to challenge pay disparities and advocate for fair compensation for female colleagues. This can involve speaking up in meetings or supporting policies that promote pay equity.

3. Mentor and Sponsor: Actively mentor and sponsor women in the workplace, providing guidance, opportunities, and support to help them advance in their careers.

4.Support Transparency: Advocate for salary transparency within their organizations. Transparent pay practices can help identify and rectify pay disparities.

5. Promote Flexible Work: Support policies that promote work-life balance, such as flexible working hours and parental leave, which can help women maintain career progression while managing family responsibilities.

8. Lead by Example: Ensure their own teams are compensated fairly and advocate for fair pay in their sphere of influence.

9. Advocate for Policy Change: Support and advocate for broader policy changes at the organizational and governmental levels that promote pay equity.

10. Use Privilege for Good: Leverage their positions of power and privilege to highlight issues of pay inequity and to push for systemic changes that promote equality.

By taking these steps, men can contribute significantly to closing the gender pay gap and fostering a more equitable workplace.

DHelping Underinsured Individuals Access Vital Health Care PAN FOUNDATION

id you know that one out of three Americans walk away from the pharmacy counter because they can’t afford their out-of-pocket costs for medication? For 20 years, the non-profit organization Patient Access Network Foundation (PAN) has been a solution to these common and unfortunate issues, dedicating the organization to helping underinsured individuals access vital healthcare treatments.

The foundation’s mission is to provide financial assistance to those who struggle to afford the costs associated with critical medical treatments, particularly for chronic, rare, and life-threatening diseases. The foundation addresses a significant gap in the healthcare system by supporting patients who, despite having insurance, are faced with extremely high costs for their medications and treatments. High co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance can create significant financial barriers, preventing many Americans from accessing the care they need. The PAN Foundation steps in to alleviate this burden, ensuring that financial hardship does not impede access to essential and critical medical care.

“For 20 years, we have focused on providing this important safety net to people who are underinsured in this country to make sure they can access the medications

they need to stay healthy. This issue is an important one for millions of people in this country,” PAN Foundation Chief Mission Officer Amy Niles explained during an interview with d-mars. “The work that we do at PAN provides financial assistance to people who are underinsured --most of the people we help are Medicare beneficiaries. With the financial assistance, people can start and stay on treatment.”

Niles said the organization offers this assistance across about 75 different programs that address the needs of patients with various cancers, and chronic and rare diseases. With the support from generous donors, healthcare providers, and pharmacies, PAN provides patients who are underinsured access to the healthcare treatments they need to best manage their conditions and focus on improving their quality of life.

“If someone meets our eligibility criteria and we have funding to provide, they can receive a grant that can cover out-of-pocket costs for a 12-month period,” Niles said. “There are so many needs that people have and affording prescription medications is one of them. Unfortunately, when you’re living on a fixed income, you may not be worrying about your prescription medications, but you may be worrying about your rent, putting food on the table, and other basic needs.”

The foundation’s impact is great, having provided over $4 billion in assistance to more than 1.2 million patients

since its founding. This support has enabled countless patients to continue to improve their health outcomes without the added stress of financial strain.

Moreover, the PAN Foundation is also committed to advocacy and policy change. By working with lawmakers, healthcare providers, and patient advocacy groups, the foundation strives to create a more equitable healthcare system.

“We are educating people about Medicare reforms that have already taken place and two important reforms that go into effect January 1, 2025. The first reform is the Medicare Part D Cap, which means that people with Medicare Part D coverage won’t pay more than $2,000 in out-of-pocket costs for their prescription medications for the calendar year,” Niles said. “The second reform that takes effect is the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which will allow people to spread their prescription costs over the calendar year.”

Through its dedicated efforts, the PAN Foundation continues to make a significant difference in the lives of many patients, helping them navigate the complexities of the healthcare system. For more information on grant assistance, finding a disease fund, and ways to support the foundation’s mission, go to panfoundation.org.

Outdoor Play Each Day Will Help to Keep the Screens Away

t’s difficult to distance ourselves from screens; they follow us everywhere - in the car, into stores, at restaurants and all around our houses. Children often become reliant on screens for entertainment, and parents sometimes use screens as a distraction. While there’s high-quality, educational digital content available, even too much of a good thing can be detrimental. It’s important for parents to make sure their children are experiencing a well-rounded mix of free play, both inside and outside, along with technology usage.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend children under the age of 18 months have no screen time except for video chatting, and children ages 2 to 5 spend no more than one hour per day watching a device.

The harmful effects of screen time have been well researched. In fact, evidence suggests that even television shows claiming to be stimulating and educational are not as effective for infants and toddlers as faceto-face interactions with a caregiver. Too much screen time has also been linked to poor sleep, delays in language and social skills, obesity, behavior problems and more. Allowing children to play in a setting that is unstructured, open-ended and encourages exploration is more beneficial than placing them in front of a device.

So, what can parents do to help their children escape the all-consuming screen? Get outside!

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), outdoor play is essential for the healthy development of children. Not only does outdoor play promote physical health but it also helps children make connections to the real world and develops their STEM skills. Plus, fresh air and exposure to sunlight have numerous health benefits for children, including stress reduction and better sleep. Children can sometimes be resistant to heading outside, especially if they’re interrupted during screen time. Head off potential complaints by setting a timer and letting them

know that once they’re done, it will be time to play outside. Let them pick out their shoes and give them two choices of activity so they feel empowered and in control.

Here are several outdoor activities that can help parents get children excited about spending time outside.

Infants can enjoy several outdoor activities like tummy time on a blanket in the park, wiggling their toes in the grass and listening to bird sounds.

Toddlers benefit from going on nature walks and discovering items like pinecones and leaves and helping their caregivers plant flowers, fruits and vegetables.

For active preschoolers and older children, make an obstacle course challenge with chalk and other items like tactile discs, hula hoops, pool noodles and more. Older children also enjoy searching for bugs and creating art from things found in nature.

Unstructured outdoor play, like spending time in the sandbox or on a playground, includes fun activities that give children of all ages the opportunity to explore independently. Parents should feel free to sit back and just observe these times, making sure their children are safe while allowing them to discover the magic of outdoor play on their own.

Help your children develop a love of the outdoors at an early age and watch them flourish - emotionally, physically and intellectually.

How to Jumpstart Your Day & Level Up Your Morning Routine

he start of a new day can be exciting, especially if you have an action-packed schedule to look forward to.

If you’re looking to meet the day with more, there are plenty of easy ways to set yourself up for success in the mornings. Research has shown that adopting a morning routine can boost productivity and focus, reduce stress and anxiety and supercharge your mood.

But it doesn’t mean you need to overhaul your life completely. Just a few small changes can result in big benefits. Here are six ways to lay the groundwork for a more fulfilling day.

DITCH THE SNOOZE BUTTON. Stealing a few extra minutes of sleep when you’re cozy in bed is a tempting idea, but it can do more harm than good. Dozing off after hitting the snooze button can leave you feeling tired and groggy, especially if you drift into REM sleep and are jolted out of it by the follow-up alarm. It can interfere with your overall sleep cycle, too.

LET THE LIGHT IN. Some people love wake-up lights that mimic sunrise, so they wake up more naturally. These can be great tools to simulate a natural sunrise, especially during the winter season. If you don’t have one of those and are waking up during sunlight hours, just throw open your curtains and greet the day. Seeing light in the morning tells your body it’s time to get up and can help you feel more alert.

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS. Many individuals, even nutritionists, find it hard to eat a balanced diet every day given how busy our lifestyles are. A good vitamin and

supplement routine can be key to getting the nutrients you need. There are a lot of choices in the vitamin aisle! To help people elevate their morning routine without added sugar, look for a sugar-free alternative that tastes great and offers the same nutrient support as a regular vitamin.

HYDRATE. Drinking water soon after you wake up hydrates you after a long night and can increase your energy levels. It is also helpful in boosting mental performance.

EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST. According to research from Henry Ford Health, among numerous other studies, eating a high-protein breakfast helps you feel full throughout the day and, even more than that, it helps control your blood sugar. According to this research, after eating protein for breakfast, your blood sugar remains low for hours. But if you start the day with refined carbs, like grabbing a pastry on the way out the door, your blood sugar spikes and then crashes, which can make you feel tired and hungry. Great choices: Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, a smoothie with protein powder, or a breakfast burrito with eggs and black beans.

MOVE A LITTLE. This doesn’t mean you have to take a spin class or run a marathon. Ten minutes of stretching, some light yoga or tai chi, or walking the dog will energize you, get your blood moving, and make you feel more alert, awake and ready to take on the day. Instead of a mad dash out of the house, mornings can be a time where you practice self-care, setting yourself up to tackle whatever the rest of your day holds. By creating a positive, uplifting morning routine, your whole day will fall into place.

4 Easy Swaps to Make Your Favorite Dishes VEGAN

f you’re experimenting with going vegan, you’ve got good timing. Even just a decade ago, it was difficult to find meat- and dairyfree options in restaurants and in the grocery store, let alone tasty vegan recipes to make at home. But now, it has never been easier to focus on plant-based eating. Grocery stores are filled with vegan products and even meat substitutes like burgers and chicken. Many restaurants offer vegan menu items, denoted with a green V. Vegan cookbooks are on the New York Times Bestseller List. Still, it seems like a huge dietary change to make. Do you have to overhaul everything?

The good news is, the answer to that is no. In fact, experts like those at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health say that, while a vegan diet can reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease, blood cholesterol and diabetes, it’s best not to go all in, all at once. It can feel overwhelming, difficult, and restrictive, so much so that you might just abandon the effort. A great way to start small is to swap out some ingredients in your favorite meals to make them vegan, without the fuss. Here are some easy swaps to make some of your favorite dishes vegan.

Oatmilk skyr for regular yogurt. Not familiar with skyr? It’s like yogurt, but creamier, thicker, higher in protein and usually lower in sugar. It’s a staple for many Nordic peoples, but because it’s traditionally made from milk, vegans haven’t had that option. Take a single-serve cup on the go or use it just like you would milk-based skyr or yogurt - a bowl with berries and granola starts the day off right. Chickpeas for tuna or chicken in salad sandwiches for wraps. This clever trick will transform your lunches, and it’s so easy to do. Start with a can of chickpeas (garbanzo beans) and lightly mash so they’re still chunky. Then dress it up the same way you would a tuna or chicken salad sandwich - diced celery and onion, a dash of parsley or dill, and vegan mayo or plain oatmilk skyr for the base. Spread it on bread and add lettuce, tomato, avocado or whatever your taste buds fancy!

Lentils for beef or pork in spaghetti sauces. Many people find they can’t even tell the difference when they sub lentils for ground meat in sauces. Here’s the trick: Cook the lentils bolognese-style, with a vegan twist. Start by sauteing onion and garlic. Add your lentils, and then pour enough oat or soy milk to just cover the lentils and let that boil down. Then, add white wine, and boil that down, too. While the wine is reducing, add Italian spices. Last, add your tomato sauce and paste and simmer. Bonus tip: You can twist

this recipe for tacos, too, by using Mexican spices. Top with plain oatmilk skyr, a great replacement for sour cream, and cilantro.

Oatmilk skyr, bananas or applesauce for eggs in baking. You can get all the moisture with none of the dairy by subbing oatmilk skyr, bananas or applesauce for eggs in your favorite baking recipes. Here’s what you need to know:

One-fourth cup of oatmilk skyr or applesauce equals one egg. For bananas, one-half cup of mashed banana equals one egg. Give it a try! You’ll be surprised how delicious it is. Going vegan, a little at a time, is an easy way to lighten up your diet. By swapping vegan ingredients for meat or dairy in your favorite dishes, you won’t miss a thing!

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT Irregular Periods

enstrual periods usually last four to seven days. Periods that are less than 21 days between or more than 35 days apart, missing three or more periods in a row, and menstrual flow that is substantially thicker or lighter than usual are all examples of menstrual disorders.

Keep on reading to find more information about irregular periods and their causes, as well as what you can do to prevent this from happening.

Menstrual Cycle & Normal Parameters

The monthly set of changes that a woman’s body goes through in preparation for the potential of pregnancy is known as the menstrual cycle. Ovulation is the release of an egg by one of the ovaries once a month. Hormonal changes prepare the uterus for pregnancy at the same time. If ovulation occurs but the egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining sheds via the vaginal opening, resulting in a monthly period.

Every woman’s menstrual cycle, which runs from the first day of one period to the first day of the next, is different. Menstrual flow can last anywhere from two to seven days and can occur every 21 to 35 days. Long cycles are frequent in the first several years after menstruation begins. Menstrual cycles, on the other hand, tend to shorten and become more regular as you get older.

Your period can be light or heavy, painful or pain-free, long or short, and still, be considered normal if your menstrual cycle is regular and around the same duration every month. “Normal” refers to what is normal for you within a broad range. Keep in mind that certain methods of contraception, such as extended-cycle birth control tablets and intrauterine devices (IUDs), can cause your menstrual cycle to change. Your period may become irregular again as you approach menopause.

Causes Of Menstrual Irregularities

Menstrual cycle irregularities can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

• Breast-feeding or pregnancy. A missed period can be an indication of an impending pregnancy. Breastfeeding tends to postpone the onset of menstruation after pregnancy.

• Eating disorders, such as significant weight loss, or excessive exercise. Menstruation can be disrupted by eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, significant weight reduction, and excessive physical activity.

• Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). During an ultrasound test, women with this common endocrine system issue may have irregular periods as well as enlarged ovaries with tiny collections of fluid in each ovary.

• Ovarian failure that occurs too soon. The lack of normal ovarian function before the age of 40 is referred to as premature ovarian failure. For years, women with premature ovarian failure, also known as primary ovarian insufficiency, may experience irregular or infrequent periods.

• Inflammation of the pelvis (PID). Menstrual irreg ularities can be caused by this infection of the repro ductive organs.

• Fibroids in the uterus. Uterine fibroids are noncancer ous uterine growths. They can produce heavy menstrual cycles and menstrual periods that last a long time.

Preventing Menstrual Abnormalities

If your menstrual cycle has changed in any way, you should keep track of when your period starts and finishes, as well as the volume of blood flow and whether you pass large blood clots. Other symptoms to keep track of include bleeding between periods and menstrual cramps or pain.

RICKEY SMILEY’S Heartfelt Journey Through

sideshow Living with Loss Forward

rief is a natural response to losing someone or something important. This can include the death of a loved one, the end of a significant relationship, losing a job, experiencing theft, or losing independence due to disability. These experiences can make someone feel like they are living a double life. On the outside, they may seem fine, but on the inside, they are struggling with pain, darkness, and loneliness.

No one is exempt from challenges and loss—not everyday people, not even celebrities. In a world where social media often shows perfect lives, neither money nor fame can shield anyone from life’s hardships. Award-winning comedian and syndicated radio host Rickey Smiley understands this well. His new book, Sideshow: Living with Loss and Moving Forward with Faith, which is set to release in mid-September, provides a raw and transparent look at his grief. Through this powerful read, Smiley shares his struggles, offering empathy and understanding to those also dealing with grief.

How can you cope when someone you love struggling with addiction? How do you deal the grief of losing them, especially if your daily has faced these tough questions for years. Death is often a topic we try to avoid, but Smiley addresses it head-on in this read. He wants readers to know that he experiences pain too. While this pain can be overwhelming uncontrollable, Smiley finds strength in his faith in God, who helps him stay grounded.

After losing his son Brandon last year to drug addiction and having also lost his father to the same struggle during his youth, Rickey is left weary and deeply wounded. Despite being the man who often brings smiles to our faces, he finds it difficult to smile himself, living a concealed double life of grief. “I came up with the title of the book inspired by the song ‘Sideshow’ by Blue Magic,” Smiley explained. “My job is to entertain and make people laugh while I’m dealing with grief internally. There are all these acts going on. There’s the comedian and radio host that everyone sees, but there’s another show, the sideshow, that remains hidden. I know many comedians who have faced unspeakable challenges and struggles but continue to work through the pain. It’s not easy to maneuver grief in the public eye. Despite the pain, the show must go on.”

Through this book, Smiley invites fans into his life, sharing that he’s still on his healing journey. Like many, he’s learning to find peace and balance the good with the grief, and past joys with present heartache. The path isn’t smooth, but he’s moving forward and

Our community is starting to see the benefits of therapy and counseling. However, mental health issues are still often viewed as a sign of weakness by some in the community. This creates a stigma around mental health, leading to shame and fear of discrimina tion. Because of this, many people hesitate to talk about their mental health and might avoid seeking the care they need. Raising awareness and reducing stigma can help community overcome these barriers and support each other better.

Smiley is challenging the stigma around mental health by sharing his personal story offering support to readers and fans who feel unseen and alone. He aims to help those dealing with grief by showing how to gain strength, manage pain, and move forward. By inviting therapy and relying on God’s strength, Smiley finds peace one day at a time.

I had the opportunity to talk with Smiley about his new book, where he discusses mental health support, coping with grief, and finding peace.

BEING A COMEDIAN, HOW CHALLENGING IS IT FOR YOU TO MAKE PEOPLE LAUGH WHEN YOU’RE COPING WITH GRIEF? Performing while coping with grief is challenging. Sometimes, I need to step away from the mic during my radio show to take a break. I remember breaking down in tears in the car before a performance at Harrah’s Casino. The driver kept driving but was uneasy. When I arrived, I wiped my tears and performed for a sold-out show. It’s tough to make people laugh when I’m dealing with my pain, but I do it for them. They come to escape their troubles and have a good time. Ironically, when I’m performing on stage and when I look out into the audience, I can sense when someone has lost a child or is experiencing grief. I recall one show where I felt a deep sadness from a couple in the crowd. After the show, they shook my hand and shared that they had recently buried their child.

FACING THE CHALLENGE OF LOSING BOTH YOUR FATHER AND SON TO ADDICTION, DID YOU FEEL YOU WERE DESTINED FOR THE SAME PATH? My grandfather played a pivotal role in my life. A military man, he would talk to me daily about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. I tried to impart the same wisdom to my son, but his rebellion led him down a dark road he couldn’t escape. I never imagined I’d face the same heartache my grandfather did—burying a son. I often wish my grandfather were here to share how he found the resilience to live into his 90s, despite such a major loss.

PROMOTING YOUR BOOK WHILE DEALING WITH THE GRIEF OF LOSING YOUR FATHER AND SON CAN BE TOUGH, ESPECIALLY WITH CONSTANT INTERVIEWS. HOW WILL YOU MAINTAIN YOUR PEACE AND MENTAL HEALTH? Therapy will be crucial for me. It’s essential to continue therapy to help myself. Sometimes, talking about my grief during interviews helps, like releasing steam from a pressure cooker—without that release, I’d get sick.

OUR COMMUNITY IS BEGINNING TO RECOGNIZE THE VALUE OF THERAPY AND COUNSELING. DO YOU HOPE THIS BOOK WILL CONTINUE TO HELP BREAK THE STIGMA SURROUNDING THESE SERVICES? Absolutely. It’s essential to lean on God, but we must also remember that God created therapists for a reason. After you’ve prayed and talked to God, seeking professional help is perfectly okay. God is undoubtedly a healer, a heart fixer, and a mind regulator. Yet, alongside my faith, therapy has been incredibly beneficial.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW IT WAS TIME FOR YOU TO LEAN INTO THERAPY? Since my son passed away, I’ve been going to therapy. I even have a therapist come on my radio show. Many people don’t realize that grief doesn’t end when the funeral does. The cards and calls may stop, but the pain remains. I’ve had many lonely days at home, feeling isolated. Sometimes, even while on stage, I’ve felt like I could just break down. These moments of anxiety are tough. Adding to my grief, I haven’t seen my granddaughter since my son passed. I have a court date coming up because of this. Dealing with my son’s death and fighting to see my granddaughter has been incredibly tough. That’s why therapy is so necessary.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU NEEDED TO INVITE GOD INTO YOUR WEARINESS AND WEAKNESS? The instant I received the call about my son’s passing, it was God’s strength that enabled me to get on a plane and fly down to bury him. I realize I need God now more than ever—not only to cope with my grief but also to support and encourage my family. It’s an incredibly hard path to walk, which is why I turn to God for constant help. One of my favorite scriptures in this season is Philippians 4:7, which speaks about peace.

Experts advise those grieving to understand that they can’t control the process and should prepare for different stages of grief. It’s natural to feel grief when a loved one dies. Allowing yourself to grieve is important. To cope with the pain, seek support from caring people like family and friends who understand your loss, take care of your health, and seek outside help from a mental health professional if needed. In many Black communities in the U.S., the church can provide a central place of support and strength. If your grief feels overwhelming, don’t hesitate to seek professional help along with support from your faith. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

“Losing a child is incredibly hard. My son passed away on a Sunday, so Sundays are tough for me. Since I shared my story publicly last year, I’ve received many letters and emails from fans. One older lady approached me after a show and told me that even though she lost her son, laughter helped her cope in that moment. This is why I continue doing comedy and radio—it’s about more than just entertainment; it’s about helping people deal with grief and life’s challenges,” said Smiley. “My new book is dedicated to the fans. God is healing me, and I hope this book will help others start or continue their healing journeys. I pray that people read it, maybe even in their book clubs. We’re all in this together.”

NAVIGATING INFERTILITY

Key Insights, Support and Resources for Couples Trying to Conceive

ouples yearning to start a family often face numerous challenges, including financial worries, health concerns and fears about potential problems during pregnancy and birth. One significant challenge that many couples may not anticipate is infertility. According to a recent survey, 77% of U.S. women aged 25-34 who have been trying to conceive over the last 12 months did not think about their ability to get pregnant until after they decided to try to conceive. In the survey that was commissioned by First Response in collaboration with RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, a majority (57%) didn’t realize how long it would take to get pregnant, and almost two in five women trying to conceive (38%) wish they knew how much conflicting information there was before attempting to get pregnant. For many couples, the challenge to conceive is even more difficult if they live in a “support desert” - an area where health care resources and infertility support are not available. This most often includes rural communities, where distance creates one problem, but the local health care infrastructure itself can be inadequate to meet the needs of young families. The survey revealed that over two in five women trying to conceive (42%) do not have local access to infertility support groups and treatment. That number climbs to 62% for rural women who feel they have inadequate access, amplifying their sense of isolation and frustration. Additionally, 41% simply don’t know what resources are available. Beyond facing limited or nonexistent resources, many couples feel a stigma around discussing infertility, accompanied by shame, embarrassment or a belief that they are at fault.

While over half of those surveyed have talked to friends (57%) or family members (56%), only 42% have spoken to a health care provider, 24% discussed their journey to pregnancy with a mental health expert, and only 16% sought a support group.

The importance of information and resources

Access to adequate information, support and resources is crucial for couples trying to conceive. In the survey, a staggering 93% of women said they believe at least three misconceptions about trying to get pregnant when given a knowledge test about common facts regarding pregnancy. Expanding support and getting the word out about resources is crucial. Women with access to local infertility support groups and treatments are more than twice as likely to use these resources (21% versus 10% without access). In addition, women with access to infertility support groups and treatment in their area report being more likely to reach out to family members (59%) or health care and mental health providers (56%) than those without local options.

What couples can do

For those living in rural communities and other support deserts, it’s vital to be proactive by seeking out care, advocating for your well-being and creating a support structure if you can’t find one. Couples living in support deserts can: Seek out community outreach programs: Contact your nearest healthcare facilities and social service programs to ask about resources.

Access telemedicine platforms: Ask healthcare clinics and hospitals in your state if they can provide remote consultations and support.

Join or establish in-person/remote support groups: If you can’t locate support groups near you, start one - or consider joining or creating a remote support group to share experiences, information and resources with others going through infertility.

Advocate for yourself and others: Destigmatizing infertility is key. Speak out, educate others and encourage open and supportive dialogue within your community.

Survey Methodology: The survey was conducted by Wakefield Research among 1,000 U.S. women, ages 25-34, who have been trying to conceive over the past 12 months, “Trying to Conceive” defined as trying to get pregnant either naturally or with assistance, between March 27 and April 7, 2024, using an email invitation and an online survey.

The scam: The contractor offers to waive your deductible or “work it into the bid.”

too high or too good to be true.

eware! Scam artists oftentimes come out after a large storm or disaster like Hurricane Beryl. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) has tips to help recognize and avoid common contracting scams. Here is what you should know:

COMMON CONTRACTING SCAMS

The scam: A contractor asks you to sign something before giving you a repair estimate.

What to do: Read any paperwork carefully. Make sure it’s not a contract, or you could get stuck paying a bill without ever seeing an estimate.

The scam: A contractor asks you to sign a contract with blank sections.

What to do: Don’t do it. Never sign a contract with blank spaces. The contractor could fill those in later with higher costs or different work.

What to do: Hire a different contractor. It’s illegal for a contractor to waive a deductible or promise a rebate for the amount. The deductible is your responsibility, and your insurance company may ask for proof you paid it. The scam: The contractor asks for a large down payment or full payment up front.

What to do: Never pay the entire bill up front and be wary if a contractor asks for a large down payment. When a disaster is declared, it’s against the law for contractors from outside your area to ask for payment before they start work.

Select a good contractor

TO AVOID THESE AND OTHER SCAMS:

• Try to use a local company, if possible.

• Don’t pay with cash. Paying with a check or credit card creates a record of your payments to the contractor.

• Get multiple bids to help determine which ones are

• Bid should include the company’s name, phone number, and address.

• Call the Better Business Bureau and check the contractor’s references.

• Ask for the contractor’s certificate of insurance and bond certification. Call the companies listed to verify the coverage.

• Ask the contractor to tell you if they contact your insurance company about more work or costs.

• Report possible contracting scams to local law enforcement.

THERE’S SOMETHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT Is Social Media Bringing You Down?

hen it comes to your social media feed, do you ever feel like you’re stuck in a bad place? Do you even dread opening up your feed sometimes because of all the negativity you might find there? Whatever happened to those funny memes, animal videos, positive interactions with friends and family, even informational DIYs and hacks?

Sometimes, it can feel like social media algorithms are not generating the mix of content needed to live a well-balanced life.

Algorithms can be a mystery to people who aren’t data analysts, but they play a significant role in what we see on social media. While designed to make our feeds more interesting and relevant, recent research has shown that these algorithms can send us down niche rabbit holes and promote negative conversations that can directly impact mental health.

Sure, some negative content on your feeds is expected, especially because world events are an important element of a diverse social media diet. But algorithms could be pushing down the feel-good content to encourage more doomscrolling. It happens more than you think.

But can you do anything about it? It turns out, you can.

LG Electronics recently commissioned a new global survey in keeping with their mission to spread the ethos of Life’s Good, to understand how social media platforms affect users’ well-being. It found what many of us experience every day - social media is a source of anxiety and stress, but also a place where we turn to be entertained. More than half of survey respondents reported their social media feeds consist of an equal or greater amount of negative content vs. positive content, with nearly a quarter saying that negative content on their social media feeds has increased their anxiety and made them unhappy.

Sound familiar? Here’s what you can do to bring that happy feeling back to your social media feed.

• Proactively search for the content you like. From funny cat videos to food hacks to motivational speeches, the content is out there if you look for it.

• Encourage your favorite creators to keep making content that you enjoy.

• Engage with posts you like and disengage with content you don’t. This sounds obvious, but people don’t often think about it.

• When engaging with content you enjoy, keep in mind, there are real humans with emotions behind the screens.

Like or comment something positive on uplifting content and the algorithm will continue to feed you more of the same.

This isn’t just about getting people to interact with fun videos. It’s about using that positive content to give people the power to change the algorithms on their feeds. By interacting with this content, it will, in turn, draw in even more positive content from other sources.

Social media can be both good for us and bad for us at the same time, so it’s important to remember there are ways we can try to proactively take more control of our social media experience. By being more conscious about what we choose to engage with, we can bring stronger balance, inspiration and happiness to our lives.

If we focus on optimism, we will be better equipped to deal with life’s challenges and build a happier life. And who doesn’t need that, right?

enerative AI (artificial intelligence) is a rapidly advancing technology that is transforming various aspects of our lives. While AI has been around in concept and theory for many decades, its development and practical implementation have evolved significantly over time. From creating art to automating tasks, it has begun to revolutionize how we live and work.

GIf we are not careful to tune in to the advancements of generative AI, we risk missing out on significant opportunities. Embracing this technology can open doors to innovation, efficiency, and new possibilities across industries, but neglecting it may leave us behind in a rapidly evolving landscape. Like any powerful tool, generative AI comes with its own set of benefits and challenges. Let’s explore the usefulness of generative AI and highlight essential considerations to keep in mind. The hope is to encourage further learning and to understand how to harness its potential effectively. By educating ourselves about generative AI, we can leverage its capabilities to drive innovation and progress while being mindful of its implications.

Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that can generate new content. These systems use machine learning algorithms to create text, images, music, and even videos that mimic human creativity. Some popular examples include GPT-4 by OpenAI and DALL-E, which can generate human-like text and images, respectively.

Generative AI offers numerous benefits across various sectors, significantly enhancing creativity and innovation, providing advanced educational tools, fostering entrepreneurship and business growth, and driving healthcare advancements. It can be a powerful tool for artists, musicians, writers, and other creatives. It can assist in brainstorming ideas, generating drafts, and even creating complete pieces

of art or music. This technology allows creatives to push the boundaries of their imagination and produce work that might have been challenging without such tools. AI-powered educational platforms can provide personalized learning experiences. For students who may face disparities in educational resources, generative AI can offer additional support through customized tutoring, interactive learning materials, and more accessible educational content. For entrepreneurs and small business owners, generative AI can automate various business processes, such as customer service, marketing, and content creation. This can save time and resources, allowing business owners to focus on growth and innovation. Additionally, AI can help analyze market trends and consumer behavior, providing valuable insights for strategic planning.

Generative AI has the potential to revolutionize health care by predicting health trends, personalizing treatment plans, creating fitness plans, nutrition plans and even aiding in early diagnosis. For communities who often face disparities in healthcare access and treatment, AI-driven healthcare solutions can offer more equitable and efficient care.

While offering numerous benefits, it also presents several key challenges that must be navigated to ensure its fair and equitable use. Four critical challenges to address are bias and fairness, privacy concerns, the technology gap, and job loss. Addressing these challenges is essential to harness the full potential of generative AI while mitigating its risk and ensuring its benefits are widely shared.

One of the significant concerns is bias. AI systems are trained on vast datasets that may contain biased information, leading to biased outputs. This means that generative AI might perpetuate stereotypes or provide unequal services. It is crucial to advocate for transparency in AI development and push for algorithms that are fair and inclusive. For example, diverse data collection that represents all demographic groups.

Generative AI systems often require large amounts of data to function effectively. This raises concerns about data privacy and security. It is important to be cautious about the type of personal information shared with AI systems and demand robust privacy protections. For example, advocate and engage with policymakers on the importance of privacy protections.

Access to generative AI tools and the internet is not evenly distributed. This technology gap can prevent underserved communities from fully benefiting from AI advancements. Efforts should be made to ensure that these technologies are accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status. For example, implement educational programs that teach people how to use AI tools effectively through partnerships with nonprofits and community organizations such as Van Jones’ nonprofit organization - Dream Machine Innovation Lab - which aims to empower the Black community through artificial intelligence.

While AI can create new job opportunities, it can also lead to job loss, particularly in roles that involve repetitive tasks. It is essential to engage in continuous learning and upskilling to stay competitive in the evolving job market. For example, research what new skills you need to acquire to handle AI-driven advanced technologies. Generative AI presents a multitude of opportunities for enhancing creativity, education, entrepreneurship, and health care. However, it is vital to remain vigilant about the potential challenges. By advocating for equitable AI practices, enhancing privacy

protections, bridging the technology gaps, and embracing lifelong learning, we can harness the power of generative AI to foster growth and innovation in our communities.

To fully benefit from generative AI, it is crucial to stay informed and engaged.

HERE ARE A FEW STEPS TO TAKE:

• Educate Yourself. Learn about AI and its applications through online courses, webinars, and community workshops.

• Advocate for Fair AI. Support initiatives and organizations working towards unbiased and inclusive AI systems.

• Stay Connected. Ensure access to the latest technology and internet resources within your community.

• Embrace Lifelong Learning. Continuously develop new skills to adapt to the changing technological landscape, no matter your age or season of life.

Generative AI is a tool with immense potential. By approaching it thoughtfully and proactively, we can harness its capabilities to drive positive change in your life. Embrace this technology and you can unlock new opportunities, push the boundaries of creativity, and make a meaningful impact in your personal and professional endeavors.

o you have travel plans? As your family gets ready for summer trips and get-togethers, make sure your child is up to date with routine childhood vaccines.

The World Health Organization has noted a significant increase in measles cases worldwide, including popular international tourist destinations for Americans. Travel is a great opportunity to see new places and visit family, but it can also put you and your family at risk for measles if you aren’t all vaccinated.

The good news? Staying up to date on recommended vaccinations is the best way to protect your child from measles and other diseases. Here’s what you need to know before you travel.

Measles is very contagious and can cause serious symptoms like high fever and a rash.

DISCOVER 5 AFFORDABLE WAYS to Make the Most of Summer Parents, PROTECT Your Child Against Measles Before International Travel

ummertime is still in effect and with the kids out of school, it’s the perfect time to plan a trip or two and spend quality time together as a family before they head back to class. However, family vacations can get pretty pricey. With booking hotel rooms, flights and more, a summer trip can put a strain on your wallet. You can make the most of the sunny season while sticking to your budget using these five tips.

BOOK EARLY

Don’t wait (we know that we are well into the summer, but still)! One of the best ways to make the most of your summer and save is to plan ahead and book early. This is especially true when planning air travel.

According to the CheapAir.com Annual Airfare Study, a fare will change 49 times on average from the day the trip first goes on sale. If you want affordable, flexible flights, aim to book your trip 2.5 to 7.5 months in advance.

In addition to flights, accommodations, concerts and activities like summer camp can sell out months in advance. To make sure your family doesn’t miss out on the fun, book ahead. Booking early not only secures your spot, but you can also get some discounts.

LOOK FOR DEALS

Watch for promotions and special offers on activities, attractions and events. Check an organization or company’s websites and social media accounts to make your summer outings more budget-friendly. Another way to save is to see if any of your existing accounts or services have member perks.

Measles is caused by a virus and spreads to others very easily when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The measles virus is so contagious that up to 90% of the people around an infected person can become infected if they are not vaccinated - and the virus can even stay in the air for up to two hours after an infected person is there.

Vaccination can help protect your child against measles and related complications.

The good news is that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and effective in protecting you and your family from measles. The MMR vaccine is part of the recommended immunization schedule for all children and adults. Vaccination with MMR is the best and safest way to prevent measles. When both doses of MMR vaccine are given (typically when the child is about 1 and 4 years old), MMR is 97% effective at preventing measles.

If you plan to travel internationally, make sure you and your loved ones are protected against measles before departure. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends:

• Infants 6 to 11 months receive one dose of the MMR vaccine before traveling internationally.

• If children 12 months and older are not vaccinated, CDC recommends they receive two doses 28 days apart before traveling.

Make sure you discuss your options with your child’s healthcare provider before traveling. Even one dose of the MMR vaccine is 93% effective in protecting against the illness.

Prepare your child for travel by ensuring they are up to date on their MMR vaccine, so you and your family can focus on what matters: staying healthy and safe while traveling abroad. Talk to your child’s healthcare provider and learn more about measles today.
