Celebrate! How to Throw a Small Business Shower

tarting a small business is no small feat. It requires vision, passion, dedication and an appreciation that your business is a vital part of local, national and global communities. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are the backbone of economies globally. According to the World Economic Forum, SMBs make up 90% of all companies and create nearly 70% of jobs and gross domestic products worldwide.

Considering the importance and impact of SMBs and the grit and determination it takes to establish your own, small business owners deserve to be celebrated. One fun way many founders are commemorating this accomplishment is by throwing a "small business shower."

What is a small business shower?

Small business showers are celebrations that recognize the biggest milestone in an entrepreneur's career - starting or scaling a business. A shower brings together friends, family, colleagues and the broader community to help support and cheer on those embarking on a new career journey, whether they are an experienced business owner entering a new market or a "solopreneur" starting their first business. By offering encouragement, business connections or resources, and perhaps even financial support, throwing a small business shower is a fun way to celebrate your accomplishments while preparing to propel your business forward. Why should I throw a shower? You may feel a little shy about throwing a small business shower. However, we throw celebrations for so many life events, from birthdays to weddings to baby showers. Why not recognize the hard work that goes into starting or expanding a business?

If you're still unsure, consider how small business showers can create an impact beyond the business owner alone. By bringing together a community of friends,

family and like-minded local business owners who can offer advice and encouragement, a network of powerful, collaborative, and supportive individuals is formed. These gatherings are a great reminder of how important it is to invest in each other's success and growth - and what can be accomplished when we do. How do I throw one?

There's no right or wrong way to throw a small business shower. The event can be virtual, in-person or both. You can host the event at home, in your business space or at your favorite restaurant. However you choose to throw your shower, have fun putting it together. Consider creating eye-catching invites, incorporating thoughtful decorations, making or catering food and setting up engaging games for your guests. Then, enjoy! And who knows? Maybe it will inspire someone you know to start their own business. Finding the right partner to jumpstart your business

As you reflect on your business, it is important to think about how you're preparing for success and future growth. One of the most critical elements to ensure your success is finding the right partners from the beginning, especially when it comes to technology.

The right tech partner will understand the unique challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs face throughout their business journey, creating an environment where leaders can navigate any challenge and drive their business to success. In doing so, they can also empower SMB owners to celebrate their successes while providing premium, reliable and quality technology. In the same way that SMBs need a community to support them, they also need the right business partners who believe in their potential.

Your accomplishments deserve recognition. Let these tips inspire you to commemorate these moments and bring your own small business shower to life.

Creating an app for your business can offer numerous benefits and is increasingly important in today’s digital landscape. Some key reasons why having an app can be advantageous for your business include brand visibility and recognition, competitive advantage, sales and revenue growth, better data collection and insights, customer loyalty, marketing and promotion, and so much more.

Here are key factors to keep in mind when creating your app:

1. PURPOSE AND GOALS

– Target Audience: Identify your target users and understand their needs and preferences.

2. FEATURES AND FUNCTIONALITY

– User Experience (UX): Ensure the app is intuitive and user-friendly.

– Security: Implement robust security measures to protect user data.

3. DESIGN AND BRANDING

– Visual Design: Create a visually appealing design that aligns with your brand identity.

4. TECHNOLOGY AND PLATFORM

– Platform Choice: Decide whether to develop for iOS, Android, or both. Consider cross-platform development if necessary.

– Technology Stack: Choose the appropriate technologies and frameworks based on your app’s requirements.

5. DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING

– Development Team: Hire experienced developers or work with a reputable development company.

– Testing: Conduct thorough testing (alpha, beta) to identify and fix bugs before the official launch.

6. MONETIZATION STRATEGY

– Business Model: Determine how the app will generate revenue (e.g., in-app purchases, subscriptions, ads).

– Pricing Strategy: Decide on pricing for any premium features or content.

7. MARKETING AND LAUNCH

– Marketing Plan: Develop a comprehensive marketing strategy to promote the app.

– Launch Strategy: Plan a soft launch to gather initial feedback, followed by a full-scale launch.

8. MAINTENANCE AND UPDATES

– Regular Updates: Plan for ongoing maintenance and updates to keep the app relevant and bug-free.

– User Feedback: Continuously gather and incorporate user feedback to improve the app.

9. LEGAL AND COMPLIANCE

– Terms of Service: Clearly define the terms of use for your app.

10. ANALYTICS AND PERFORMANCE MONITORING

– Analytics Tools: Integrate analytics to track user behavior and app performance.

– KPIs: Establish key performance indicators to measure the app’s success and areas for improvement.

Creating an app for your business can significantly enhance customer engagement, improve operational efficiency, and provide valuable insights, ultimately contributing to the growth and success of your business. By carefully considering these factors, you can create an app that effectively meets your business goals and provides a valuable experience for your users.

The Impor tance of Growing Black-Owned Businesses and Ways to Do It

levating Black-owned businesses is extremely important for fostering economic empowerment and bridging the racial wealth gap, which has persisted due to systemic inequalities. By supporting Black-owned businesses, we not only create job opportunities within Black communities but also stimulate local economies through reinvestment. This elevation promotes diverse market solutions and innovative approaches that enrich the broader business landscape.

Moreover, successful Black-owned businesses serve as inspiring role models for future generations, enhancing representation and contributing to social equity. They play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage and strengthening community resilience, ultimately leading to a more inclusive and equitable society.

GROWING BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES IS CRUCIAL FOR SEVERAL REASONS:

• Economic Empowerment: Enhancing the financial independence and stability of Black communities by creating wealth and jobs.

• Reducing the Racial Wealth Gap: Promoting economic equality by addressing the systemic disparities in income and asset accumulation between Black and white households.

• Community Development: Supporting local economies by reinvesting profits into community services, infrastructure, and other local businesses.

• Diverse Market Solutions: Bringing unique products and services to the market, driven by diverse perspectives and experiences.

• Representation and Role Models: Providing visible success stories that inspire future generations of Black entrepreneurs and professionals.

• Social Equity: Challenging systemic biases and promoting more inclusive economic policies and practices.

• Innovation and Creativity: Fostering innovation through diverse ideas and approaches, contributing to a more dynamic and competitive marketplace.

• Cultural Preservation: Supporting businesses that reflect and preserve Black culture, history, and identity.

• Political Influence: Increasing the political and social influence of Black communities through economic power and advocacy.

• Resilience and Self-Sufficiency: Building resilient communities that are better able to withstand economic downturns and crises.

GROW YOUR BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS WITH THESE SEVERAL KEY STRATEGIES AND RESOURCES:

• Access to Capital: Secure funding through grants, loans, or investment from sources like community development financial institutions (CDFIs), minority-focused venture capital firms, or crowdfunding.

• Networking and Mentorship: Connect with other Black entrepreneurs and mentors through organizations like the National Black Chamber of Commerce, Black Business Association, or online communities.

• Business Planning: Develop a comprehensive business plan that outlines your market analysis, financial projections, and growth strategy.

• Marketing and Branding: Create a strong brand identity and leverage social media, local events, and partnerships to reach your target audience. Highlight your status as a Black-owned business if it aligns with your brand story.

• Customer Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with your customers through excellent service, loyalty programs, and regular engagement.

• Digital Presence: Establish a robust online presence with a professional website, e-commerce capabilities, and active social media profiles.

• Operational Efficiency: Streamline your operations with effective management practices, technology solutions, and training for your team.

• Legal and Financial Advice: Seek advice from legal and financial professionals to ensure compliance and sound financial management.

• Community Support: Engage with your local community and other Black-owned businesses to build a supportive network and advocate for collective growth.

• Continuous Learning: Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and best practices through courses, workshops, and conferences.

Growing Black-owned businesses is essential for promoting economic equity, community development, and cultural preservation. Through targeted efforts in access to capital, networking, and strategic planning, we can help bridge the racial wealth gap and foster a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous society for all. Investing in Black-owned businesses is not just an economic imperative but a step towards social justice and equity.

Breaking the Silence and Raising Awareness on Suicide EVERY LIFE MATTERS

eptember marks National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a critical period dedicated to shining a light on a topic that is often shrouded in silence and stigma: Suicide. With rising rates of mental health struggles and these tragic outcomes, it is more important than ever to foster and normalize open, compassionate conversations about these issues. This article aims to address the stigma and break the silence around suicide and mental health, debunk harmful myths, and promote a culture of validation and support.

The stigma surrounding suicide is pervasive and deeply rooted in cultural, social, and historical factors. For many, the idea of discussing such a topic is uncomfortable, and this discomfort often stems from misconceptions and fear. Traditionally, taking one's life has been viewed as a moral failing or a sign of personal weakness, leading to shame and judgment. This stigma can prevent individuals from seeking the help they desperately need, exacerbating their isolation and suffering.

To effectively combat this stigma, it is essential to challenge the myths that perpetuate these harmful attitudes. We must be willing to be comfortable with being uncomfortable about these topics. This willingness can save lives!

There are at least four myths that contribute to the misunderstanding and stigma surrounding suicide. One of the most dangerous myths is, “people who talk about taking their own lives won't do it – they are just talking.” But those who are struggling express their thoughts and feelings about self-harm, either directly or indirectly, as a cry for help.

Another pervasive myth is that “suicide is a sign of weakness.” Mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety, are complex and multifaceted, and they are not indicators of a person’s strength or character. There is the misconception that talking about self-harm will encourage it. On the contrary, open conversations about these struggles are critical for prevention; they provide an opportunity for individuals to share their struggles and receive the support they need.

Beyond debunking myths, it is crucial to address the harmful attitudes that dismiss the seriousness of mental health struggles, particularly the “just get over it” mentality. The phrase “just get over it” is often used to dismiss the experiences of those grappling with mental health challenges. This mentality is not only dismissive but profoundly damaging. It trivializes the genuine pain that individuals experience, implying that mental health struggles are a

choice or a temporary mood that can be easily overcome. However, mental health conditions are real, often chronic issues that require appropriate treatment and support. When we tell someone to “just get over it,” we are failing to acknowledge their pain and potentially discouraging them from seeking the help they need.

Understanding the seriousness of mental health struggles and dispelling harmful myths are key steps in addressing the rising rates of suicide.

In recent years, the rates of suicide have been increasing, driven by various factors. Economic stress, social isolation and decline, and the pressures of modern life, including the influence of social media, contribute significantly to this rise. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified feelings of loneliness, uncertainty, and despair for many individuals. Understanding these contributing factors is essential in creating effective prevention strategies and offering the right support to those who are struggling.

One of the most powerful tools we have in preventing these tragedies is fostering open conversations about mental health.

Normalizing conversations about mental health and the thoughts that can lead to self-harm can have a profound impact. When people feel safe to discuss their feelings without fear of judgment, it reduces the stigma and isolation that often accompanies mental health struggles. Open dialogue allows individuals to share their experiences and connect with others, fostering a sense of community and support. By encouraging these conversations, we can create a culture of empathy and understanding, which is essential for preventing these tragic outcomes. While open conversations are vital, knowing how to support someone who is struggling is equally important. Supporting someone who may be experiencing thoughts of suicide requires empathy, patience, and knowledge.

How can you help?

Start by creating a safe, non-judgmental space where they can express their feelings. Listen actively and avoid making dismissive comments like “just get over it.” Instead, validate their emotions and encourage them to seek professional help.

Offering resources such as hotlines, counseling services, or support groups can also be incredibly helpful. It’s important to follow up and maintain your support over time, showing them that they are not alone.

Knowing where to find help is crucial for both those struggling and those supporting them. There are many resources available for those who are struggling with thoughts of self-harm or mental health challenges:

• National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273TALK (8255)

• Crisis Text Line: Text HELLO to 741741

• Local mental health services: Community resources and support groups can provide additional help.

• Online forums and support groups: Platforms like Reddit and dedicated mental health websites offer spaces for anonymous support and connection. Every life matters.

Addressing the stigma around suicide and promoting open conversations is vital in creating a supportive and understanding environment. By debunking myths, challenging harmful attitudes, and encouraging validation of feelings, we can help prevent these tragedies and offer the support that those in need deserve. Your life matters, and so do your feelings. Together, we can make a difference. Take action by sharing this message, starting conversations, and educating yourself and others about preventing suicide and supporting mental health. By working together, we can create a world where everyone feels valued and supported.

Affirmations for Those Struggling

Finally, here are 10 affirmations for anyone who may be struggling. Repeat as often as possible:

1. My feelings are valid, and my life matters.

2. It's okay to ask for help; I don't have to go through this alone.

3. I am stronger than I think, and there is hope for a better tomorrow.

This phrase means that any issues, problems, or mistakes will eventually be resolved or become unimportant over time. It suggests that things will work out in the end, much like how dirty laundry comes out clean after being washed.

HEAL High School by Memorial Hermann & Aldine ISD Welcomes Inaugural Class

tudents in the inaugural class of the Health Education and Leadership (HEAL) High School started school on Monday, August 12, marking the first step in their journey to rewarding careers in health care.

HEAL High School is a partnership between Memorial Hermann Health System and Aldine Independent School District (ISD), which is supported by a $31 million initial gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies to Memorial Hermann Foundation. The gift is one of just 10 nationwide that was given earlier this year to bridge the health care and education systems and provide a meaningful educational pathway to prepare students for health care jobs with family-sustaining wages after graduation from a specially designed, career-technical education (CTE) high school, a news release said.

“We are excited to open our doors today and officially welcome the first class of HEAL High School,” said Dr. David L. Callender, President and CEO of Memorial

Hermann Health System. “Through our partnership with Aldine ISD, students in our region will receive a first-class, hands-on educational experience in health care that will help them secure meaningful, well-paying employment following graduation. This first-of-its-kind initiative is also helping address the gap in critical health care talent needs that exist today for nurses, technicians and more.” HEAL High School's curriculum combines academic rigor with firsthand learning to integrate health care career knowledge with job training. In ninth and 10th grades, students will participate in job-shadowing and practice their skills in simulation labs. Starting in the 11th grade, students will have access to paid health care internships, professional mentoring and other work-based learning experiences. Co-curricular programs including arts, physical education, and affinity group activities will also be offered to students. The curriculum is enhanced with off-campus and extracurricular experiences such as Memorial Hermann's Summer Infusion Program, which includes tours of hospital facilities and Memorial Hermann Life Flight® operations along with first aid training.

“This is an incredibly special day for the Aldine ISD community as we launch the HEAL program at Nimitz High

School,” said Dr. LaTonya M. Goffney, Superintendent of Aldine ISD. “Our mission as a district is to provide a rigorous and enriching educational experience that prepares every student for success in college, career, and life. This partnership with Memorial Hermann, made possible by Bloomberg Philanthropies, represents a powerful bridge between health and education systems, inspiring young people to pursue careers they might otherwise not have considered. Through this initiative, we are equipping our students with the real-world skills and foundational knowledge needed to turn that inspiration into reality, ensuring they thrive in their academic and career pursuits. I am excited to partner with Memorial Hermann and demonstrate what is possible in a visionary partnership.” Students choose from five career pathways: nursing, physical and occupational rehabilitation, medical imaging, pharmacy, or non-clinical medical administration. Each pathway provides a high-quality, well-rounded high school experience for students in the community, preparing graduates to transition directly into high-demand health care jobs.

7 Strategies to Save for Retirement and College at the Same Time

aving for the future is a top financial priority for most people. If you have children, then saving for their college education may also be an important goal for you. Or, you may want to pursue an advanced degree yourself. Putting away money to afford both retirement and higher education can be quite expensive. Many families face the challenge of balancing retirement and college savings. Fortunately, you don’t have to make a choice between them. There are several smart strategies that can help you strike the right balance.

Start saving money early. The earlier you begin saving for both retirement and college,

the easier it will feel to reach your goals. Set clear savings priorities. Determine how much you can comfortably save for each goal. Your retirement generally should take precedence over savings for education expenses. Remember: Loans are available for college but not for retirement. Make use of tax-advantaged accounts. Maximize contributions to qualified retirement accounts, such as 401(k)s and IRAs. For education expenses, consider 529 plans or other college savings accounts, which can offer tax benefits in some states.

Automate regular savings de posits. Set up automatic contri butions to both retirement and college savings ac counts. You could set up direct deposits or 401(k)/

TSP contributions from your paycheck, or automatic account transfers, to make the process of saving easy and painless. This ensures consistency and discipline in your savings strategy.

Adjust your contributions over time. As your financial situation evolves, revisit your savings plans. You might decide to change how much money you’re setting aside. Windfalls, pay raises, or savings from reducing expenses can be opportunities to save more mon-

Involve others in education savings. Teach your children about the value of money by involving them in the college savings process. Encourage them to contribute a percentage of their

part-time earnings or gift money to their accounts. This can help them appreciate what it takes to go to college. Additionally, let family members know you’ve set up a 529 plan and encourage them to contribute to it. Explore financial assistance options. Look into scholarship opportunities, grants and financial aid options to reduce college costs. On the retirement side, see if your employer offers a matching contribution for qualified retirement accounts. An employer match can give a significant boost to your retirement savings.

By carefully planning, setting priorities and using tax-advantaged savings accounts, you can set aside money for your retirement and college education goals.

Dos and Don’ts When Creating a Resume

Proofread Thoroughly: Spelling and grammar mistakes can make a poor impression. Carefully review your resume or ask someone else to proofread it.

re you looking for a new job or trying to expand your career opportunities? Creating an effective resume is a must for making a strong first impression on potential employers.

Here are some key dos and don’ts to ensure your resume lands you in the right role:

DOS

Tailor Your Resume: Customize your resume for each job application by highlighting relevant skills and experiences that match the job description.

Use a Clean Layout: Ensure your resume is easy to read with clear headings, bullet points, and consistent formatting. Stick to a professional font and keep the design simple.

Highlight Achievements: Focus on specific accomplishments rather than just listing job duties. Use quantifiable results (e.g., increased sales by 20%) to demonstrate your impact.

Include a Summary Statement: Start with a brief summary or objective that highlights your key qualifications and what you bring to the role.

Use Action Verbs: Start bullet points with strong action verbs like “led,” “developed,” “implemented,” or “achieved” to make your responsibilities and achievements stand out.

Keep It Concise: Aim to keep your resume to one or two pages. Be concise and only include information that is directly relevant to the job you are applying for.

Include Relevant Keywords: Incorporate keywords from the job description into your resume to help it get past Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

Provide Contact Information: Make sure your contact details, including phone number and email address, are up to date and easy to find.

List Your Education and Certifications: Include relevant education, certifications, and training, especially if they are required for the job.

DON’TS

Don’t Include Irrelevant Information: Avoid listing unrelated jobs or personal information that doesn’t contribute to your application.

Don’t Use Unprofessional Email Addresses: Use a professional email address that includes your name rather than a nickname or informal address.

Don’t Lie or Exaggerate: Be honest about your experience and qualifications. Exaggerating can backfire during interviews or background checks.

Don’t Include References: There’s no need to list references on your resume. You can provide them later if requested.

Don’t Use Jargon or Acronyms: Avoid industry-specific jargon or acronyms that a recruiter might not understand. Keep the language simple and clear.

Don’t Use First-Person Pronouns: Avoid using “I,” “me,” or “my” in your resume. Instead, write in bullet points that focus on your accomplishments.

Don’t Overload with Graphics: Avoid using excessive graphics, charts, or images. While some industries like creative fields may welcome a more visual resume, most prefer a clean, text-based document.

Don’t Use a One-Size-Fits-All Resume: A generic resume can make you look unfocused. Tailor your resume to each job you apply for.

Don’t Forget to Update: Regularly update your resume with new experiences, skills, and accomplishments to ensure it reflects your current qualifications.

Don’t Include Salary Information: Avoid listing your current or expected salary on your resume. This can be discussed later during the interview process.

Using these tools will help you create a polished, professional resume that effectively showcases your qualifications and makes a strong impression on employers.

SECURE YOUR STUDENT’S FUTURE WITH 5 College Insurance Must-Haves

consider a student health insurance policy.

No matter which plan you choose, make sure you aren't billed twice, as some schools automatically bill for health insurance.

Are you preparing to send your student off to college next semester?

As you collaborate on a back-tocollege checklist, make sure to add insurance shopping.

If you haven't considered any type of insurance for your college-bound student, the time to do so is now! To protect your peace of mind and their academic journey, consider the following types of insurance policies.

Health insurance

Whether your student gets a run-of-the-mill cold or experiences a medical emergency, you'll want to make sure they're covered. Per federal law, they can stay on your health insurance plan until age 26. However, your plan may not provide coverage if your student attends school out of state.

Check to make sure your health insurance provides adequate coverage. If not, you should

Tuition insurance

No one wants to think about their child withdrawing from school, but it may happen, and not just because of a physical illness. According to a 2024 study, 64% of students currently enrolled in higher education considered withdrawing because of emotional stress or mental health concerns.

If your student withdraws from school, getting a tuition refund can be incredibly difficult. Most colleges only offer tuition refunds within the first few weeks of the term, and virtually none provide any refunds for housing or fees. Luckily, you can safeguard your investment in your student's education with tuition insurance.

Tuition insurance plans can provide reimbursement for a variety of expenses, including tuition, housing and academic fees.

Travel insurance

Is your child planning to travel during the holidays or study abroad next semester? Then you'll need to protect them with travel insurance.

Travel insurance is often overlooked but is an important form of coverage for college students. Whether your student has to cancel a trip, loses their luggage, has a medical emergency or experiences other travel-related risks, travel insurance has you covered.

Auto insurance

If your student plans to have a car on campus, they're legally required to have car insurance. You could keep your child on your auto insurance family policy, but it's wise to compare rates. In fact, there are auto insurance policies tailored to the needs of college students that could save them (and you) money.

When shopping for student auto insurance, look for plans that offer student discounts.

Renters insurance

Beyond tuition, room and board and other school fees, you and your student may also invest in belongings like cell phones, laptops, clothing, bikes and other expensive items. Can you afford to replace them if they become damaged, destroyed or stolen?

Whether your student plans to live in an on-campus residence hall or in off-campus housing, make sure they're protected with renters insurance. Not only can renters insurance cover property damage from burst pipes and other household problems, but it can also help replace expensive items.

Choose a policy so that you can provide your student with personal liability and worldwide property coverage. Secure your student's future and protect your peace of mind. By considering these five types of insurance plans, you can help your student focus on their education and personal growth without worrying about the potential financial loss that can come with unexpected risks.

Ozempic Difficult to Obtain in BLACK AND BROWN COMMUNITIES

ccording to a recent study published in Lucent, the number of people living with diabetes worldwide is on pace to more than double in the next three decades. This increase will bring the total of worldwide diabetic patients to a staggering 1.3 billion by 2025, making diabetes one of the top 10 leading causes of death and disability, in the world.

AOn Dec. 5, 2017, a little-known drug hit the market to help millions of people suffering with diabetes. The drug was called Ozempic. Ozempic was created to lower blood sugar by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin and has shown continual success in patients with lowering their A1-C. The introduction of medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy has changed the game for millions of people worldwide who have been struggling with diabetes. It was a once weekly auto injector that would allow patients to maintain their sugar levels and create a healthier way of life. One of its known side effects, however, was dramatic weight loss.

In early 2022, Ozempic rose to fame when celebrities who do not suffer from diabetes began publicizing the drugs’ ability to assist in fast-acting weight loss. It quickly went from a lifesaving medication for diabetics to the celebrity go-to for shedding unwanted pounds. In 2021, in the U.S. alone, prescriptions of the drug quadrupled landing the miracle drug on the worldwide shortage list creating rippling effects through many communities.

Valentine Paterson of Brooklyn, New York thought he had found a solution to his endless battle with obesity and diabetes when he was prescribed Ozempic. The effects were almost immediate and life-altering.

“I weighed more than 365 pounds and after being hospitalized for heart failure, my doctor recommended I take Ozempic,” said Paterson a 52-year-old Uber driver. “Within four months of taking the drug, I lost 65 pounds, and my doctor reduced my other medications from nine to four. It changed my life. But then I could not get my prescription filled. I looked for months; it was a nightmare. All the work and progress I was making was slipping away, all because I was unable to pay out of pocket.”

The reason Mr. Paterson could not get his prescription filled is because Mr. Paterson’s local pharmacy, like many others

nationwide, was no longer able to obtain the blockbuster medication. The craze of Ozempic and Wegovy created a nationwide shortage of medication by those willing to pay the exorbitant out-of-pocket costs getting first cracks at the available supply. So, while pharmacies in lower income neighborhoods could not stock their shelves, pharmacies on Manhattan’s Upper Eastside had a twelve-month supply of the miracle drug readily available to those able to pay $1,400 per prescription. Given this void, the question was raised as to whether anyone or anything could help.

Enter the compounding pharmacy. According to the FDA, compounding pharmacies are authorized to produce exact drugs in times of a national shortage. But what exactly is a compounding pharmacy? A compounding pharmacy makes and sells prescription medicines based on the specific formula provided to it by the FDA. When a medicine makes its way to the national shortage list, compounding pharmacies are authorized to make generic versions of those medications to assist all those in need. When a medicine is not on the national shortage list, compounding pharmacies are only authorized to make alternate forms of the prescribed drug. Ozempic has been on both the worldwide and U.S. shortage list since April of 2022. However, what happens when Big Pharma doesn’t want to let compounding pharmacies earn money they feel belongs to them even during a shortage?

“Lifeline Pharmacy” is a small compounding pharmacy run by Dr. Aisha Johnson in the heart of south Los Angeles. For years, this pharmacy has served as a beacon of hope, providing personalized care and essential medications to the predominantly Black and Latino residents. Among the most critical medications Dr. Johnson compounds is semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Black adults are nearly twice as likely as white adults to develop type 2 diabetes. This racial disparity has been rising over the last 30 years creating a disproportionate need for these life altering medications in communities of color. Despite the FDA’s approval for compounding pharmacies to produce semaglutide, Novo Nordisk has targeted these providers in order to protect their profits and eliminate the competition.

In the Ward 8 area of Washington, D.C., a heavily populated community of Black and Latino residents, the drug remains in high demand with little to no supply. “There is definitely a monopoly on it by Big Pharma,” said Dr. Damon Ricks, Pharmacy Manager at SIP. “Small

Compounding Pharmacies are definitely within their rights and scope to create these drugs when the FDA declares a shortage.”

The impact of Big Pharma’s campaign is being felt in communities from Brooklyn, New York to Los Angeles. The misinformation spread by Novo Nordisk, stating that compounded versions of semagludies are unsafe and potentially life threating has created fear and uncertainty in those using compounded versions of the popular medication. Intensifying the problem, legislative proposals influenced by pharmaceutical lobbyists threatened to impose restrictions that would make it nearly impossible for small pharmacies to continue compounding semaglutide. For communities of color, this means losing a critical source of affordable and accessible medication.

“Big Pharma should not have a hold on these drugs. There needs to be a leveling of the playing field. I think having access to these drugs all across the board is needed. If a patient needs it for diabetes, then it should be made available to them. Prioritizing weight loss over diabetic patients is an injustice to our health care system,” said Ricks.

But Big Pharma continues to push for stricter regulations, claiming the need for patient safety. However, insufficient evidence exists to back up any of the claims made by Big Pharma. Compounding pharmacies must comply with existing rigorous standards to make any medication. They follow these standards in order to serve lower economic depressed communities of color. The popularity of these drugs has made it difficult for average Americans to afford or find these medications. These are not just weight loss medications; they are tools for survival for many diabetic patients. Due to Big Pharma’s bullying campaign, many patients have been forced to accept lower doses of these drugs to maintain any benefits even though most experience little to no progress with the reduced dosage. Yet those that truly need these lifesaving medications continue to suffer.

For communities of color, the ability of local compounding pharmacies to provide semaglutide and other essential medications is about more than access to treatment. They serve as a testament to the power of community and the relentless pursuit of a more just and equitable healthcare system.

Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin

hair removal gained popularity fast due to the results obtained when using it. This laser features a crystal used in lasers of solid state and has a wavelength of 1064 nm, known as a safer wavelength for dark skin hair removal.

Dark Skin Hair Removal

hen laser hair removal first appeared, it was recommended that people of color not engage in this treatment, thus it could leave their skin damaged with blisters, severe burns, discoloration, and the list goes on.

Laser hair removal works by distinguishing skin pigment from hair follicles, which is why many aestheticians recommend it for people with pale skin and dark hair than for people with similar coloration in both. Thankfully, laser hair removal for dark skin made incredible advances over the past few years, leading to the procedure being safer and more effective for people of color.

Which Is the Best Laser for Dark Skin Hair Removal?

You might be wondering about the reason behind laser evolution, and this has to do with the type of laser used in hair removal procedures. YAG laser for dark skin

What to Do Before a Laser Hair Removal Appointment

To make the most out of your laser hair removal appointment, there are a few things you can do to prepare and look after your skin. First, it is recommended that you schedule a consultation appointment first so an aesthetician can take a look at your skin and determine whether it is safe for you to get laser hair removal or not. This is especially for people with acne or burns. Plus, you’ll need to discuss if you’re taking any medication or applying any skincare products that might affect the results or your skin after the procedure. Avoid tanning or waxing days close to your appointment, as well as exfoliating. The only thing you can and should do to your skin is shaving the areas you’ll get laser hair removal 24 hours before your appointment. Use a common razor for this and try to do it slowly to not get razor bumps.

Laser hair removal for dark skin is now safe and effective, but that also depends on the laser used by the salon and the experience of the esthetician. It is very easy to fall for cheap prices and then end up with a bad result that could damage your skin. Therefore, we recommend you take time to evaluate where you want to make an appointment, the equipment they use, the certifications of the place, and the people who work there.

Helping Your Child Overcome Trauma and Thrive

Life can be complicated and unpredictable. And while there is no such thing as a “perfect parent,” there are strategies that can help your child become better able to deal with difficult circumstances as they arise.

Known in the pediatric community as adverse childhood experiences, traumatic circumstances like death, divorce and poverty cause children stress, which, over time, can become toxic, impacting a child’s health now, and potentially in the future. In fact, adults who’ve experienced one or more adverse experiences as a child or who are exposed to ongoing chronic social inequities over time are at higher risk of depression, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other health conditions during their lifetime.

On the other hand, safe, stable, and nurturing relationships can act as a powerful, protective buffer against the biological harms of toxic stress on children and are key to building resilience, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). When children feel connected and supported in the early years, says a newly updated AAP report, they are more likely to become healthy, competent and educated citizens later in life.

After troubling events, the AAP says to remember the 3 Rs: reassure, return to routine and regulate:

1. Reassure. Remind your child that they are safe and loved, using words and touch and by creating safe spaces in the home.

2. Return to routine. Try to maintain regular daily routines and be sure to explain any changes in the schedule ahead of time. This can promote a sense of safety and normalcy for your child and let them know what to expect.

3. Regulate. Help your child learn “self-regulation” skills to calm themselves and manage their emotions and behaviors. This may include belly breathing, stretching or taking breaks.

Experts recommend turning to your pediatrician when parenthood gets challenging. Pediatricians are trained to not only monitor your child’s physical growth, but also their social-emotional health. They can help your family build a support system-- whether a child is relatively healthy, has ongoing developmental or behavioral concerns, or if your family is going through hard times.

Pediatricians also want to know how parents and household members are doing and if they feel supported. At appointments, your pediatrician may invite you to share stories about your family life and the daily

stresses and struggles of parenting, as well as ask about your own childhood experiences and current living circumstances. So, bring your questions and concerns. The American Academy of Pediatrics provides tips and guidance on improving relational health, and helping children build resilience and cope with trauma. To learn more, visit healthychildren.org.

SHIELD YOUR HEALTH THIS FALL AND WINTER WITH FLU, RSV AND COVID-19 VACCINES

re you prepared for the fall and winter seasons? As the cooler seasons approach, the threat of respiratory illnesses like influenza (the flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 becomes bigger. With overlapping symptoms and potential complications, it’s important to understand the importance of vaccinations in protecting your health. The Houston Health Department (HHD) provides essential guidance on how to protect yourself and your loved ones as the colder months ensue.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE VIRUSES

Flu: Influenza mutates rapidly, making it necessary for annual updates to the flu vaccine to match the most common circulating strains. According to the CDC, there are two main types of flu viruses: A and B. The influenza A and B viruses that routinely spread in people (human influenza viruses) are responsible for seasonal flu epidemics each year. The flu can lead to serious complications, especially in the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses.

RSV: RSV is a common respiratory virus that infects the lungs but can also affect the nose and throat. It spreads in the fall and winter, along with other respiratory viruses, like flu and COVID-19. According to the CDC, it usually peaks in December and January. While it often causes mild symptoms similar to the common cold, it can lead to severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia in vulnerable populations. RSV symptoms make it difficult to distinguish it from the common cold or other respiratory viruses (like the flu or COVID-19). Most people who get RSV will only have mild illness, but it can be very dangerous for babies, young children, and adults 60 and older.

COVID-19: Despite the decline in cases and severity due to widespread vaccination, COVID-19 remains a concern for many, especially with the emergence of new variants. People with COVID-19 may experience respiratory symptoms that feel like a cold, the flu, or pneumonia. Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, but some are at a higher risk of developing severe disease and may require hospitalization. COVID-19 is spread primarily through contact with droplets made by people who are sick when they cough, sneeze, or talk. In some cases, a person might get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the SARS-CoV-2 virus on it and then transferring the virus to their mouth, nose, or eyes, the CDC advises. Annual boosters like the flu shot are now recommended to maintain immunity, particularly for high-risk individuals.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING VACCINATED

According to HHD experts, vaccination remains the most effective defense against these viruses, helping reduce the severity of illness and preventing hospitalizations. The CDC recommends that everyone aged six months and older should receive an annual flu vaccine. This year, the flu vaccine is designed to combat the most common strains that are expected to circulate.

For COVID-19, up to date with the virus still vaccinated is those at higher underlying health

Department’s Deputy Public Health White, says.

2. COVID-19 Vaccination: The CDC advises staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations, including any updated booster shots that target the most recent variants. As the virus continues to evolve, getting the latest booster can provide enhanced protection against severe outcomes.

3. RSV Vaccine: For the first time, the CDC recommends RSV vaccination for adults 60 years and older, particularly those with chronic medical conditions. The vaccine can help reduce the risk of severe illness and complications from RSV.

4. Co-Administration of Vaccines: According to the CDC, it’s safe to receive the flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines simultaneously. This co-administration can simplify the process and ensure that you are protected against multiple viruses at once, especially important for those with busy schedules or limited access to health care.

STEPS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR PROTECTION

Consult Your Healthcare Provider: Before receiving any vaccines, talk to your healthcare provider, especially if you have underlying health conditions or concerns about vaccine interactions.

Practice Good Hygiene: In addition to vaccinations, maintain good hygiene practices such as regular handwashing, wearing masks in crowded places, and staying home when you’re feeling unwell to reduce the spread of any respiratory viruses.

Stay Informed: Keep up to date with CDC guidelines and HHD recommendations, as they may change based on the latest scientific evidence and virus activity. Consulting with your healthcare provider will help ensure that you receive the most appropriate vaccines for your age, health status, and lifestyle. HHD regularly updates guidelines based on the latest research and emerging virus strains.

DEFENSE

“Remember, during respiratory viral season, if you’re feeling sick, it’s important to stay away from others at work, school, or home and consult your healthcare provider. It’s important to remember certain medications are available to shorten the course of your illness,” Dr. White advised.

As we look forward to navigating the colder months, vaccinations offer a shield of protection against the flu, RSV, and COVID-19. By following health experts’ recommendations and taking proactive steps to safeguard your health, you can significantly reduce your risk of contracting these severe illnesses and contribute to a healthier community. Remember, the best defense is a well-prepared one—so arm yourself with the necessary vaccines and stay vigilant, by any means necessary!

Ways to Increase Your Credit Limit Without Asking

ncreasing your credit limit without directly asking your credit card issuer involves several strategies aimed at demonstrating responsible credit behavior.

Credit limit increases are important for individuals who are trying to build credit for several reasons:

• Lower Credit Utilization Ratio: As your credit limit increases, assuming your spending remains the same, your credit utilization ratio (the percentage of your credit limit that you’re using) decreases. A lower utilization ratio generally boosts your credit score because it demonstrates responsible credit management.

• Improved Credit Score: A higher credit limit, when managed responsibly, can positively impact your credit score. Credit scoring models consider both your total credit utilization and the individual utilization of each credit account.

• Access to More Credit: Having a higher credit limit provides you with more purchasing power and flexibility. It allows you to handle larger expenses or emergencies without maxing out your card, which can negatively affect your credit score.

• Creditworthiness Perception: Creditors often view a higher credit limit as a sign of trust and creditworthiness. It shows that other lenders have trusted you with larger credit lines, which can be beneficial when applying for loans or additional credit in the future.

• Financial Flexibility: With a higher credit limit, you have more room to manage your finances and can potentially take advantage of rewards programs or other benefits offered by your credit card issuer.

Overall, credit limit increases can be instrumental in building a positive credit history and improving your financial flexibility, provided that you continue to use credit responsibly and avoid excessive debt.

Here are some effective methods to getting your credit limit increased without having to make a request:

• Use Your Card Regularly: Consistently using your credit card for purchases can show that you are an active and reliable cardholder.

• Pay Bills on Time: Always pay your bills on or before the due date. A strong payment history is a key factor in credit limit increases.

• Pay More Than the Minimum: Paying more than the minimum amount due shows that you can manage your debt responsibly.

• Reduce Credit Card Balances: Keeping your credit utilization ratio low (below 30%) can positively impact your credit score and signal to issuers that you are not over-reliant on credit.

• Update Income Information: Many credit card issuers periodically review accounts and may increase limits based on updated income information. Ensure your income details are current.

• Maintain a Good Credit Score: A higher credit score increases the likelihood of automatic credit limit increases. Regularly monitor your credit report for accuracy and work on improving your score if necessary.

• Use Multiple Credit Products: Demonstrating responsible use of various types of credit (e.g., loans, mortgages) can reflect positively on your credit profile.

• Avoid Hard Inquiries: Limit the number of hard inquiries on your credit report, as too many can negatively impact your score.

By consistently demonstrating responsible credit behavior, you increase the chances of your issuer automatically increasing your credit limit.

anaging competing financial priorities can be emotionally and logistically complex, whether you’re juggling college tuition bills and mortgage payments, or you’re carving out opportunities for travel while planning for retirement. According to financial planning professionals, following these tips can help you effectively make space in your budget for everything that matters to you:

Get started early: While there is no wrong time to make a financial plan, waiting until you achieve a certain level of wealth can be counterproductive. Having a plan at the outset will help you achieve your goals faster and with less anxiety.

Set specific goals: Being precise about your goals can help ensure you’re prepared to achieve them. For example, simply saving for retirement is terrific, but having a clear vision of what you want your retirement to look like can help you map out a financial plan that gets you exactly where you want to go.

Be strategic about debt: If getting out of debt is one of your financial goals, be strategic about it. Pay off credit card bills and loans with higher interest rates first to reduce the overall cost of your debt over time and free up more of your money for your other priorities.

Maximize savings: If you can only afford small contributions to your savings right now because of other financial priorities, don’t fret. You can actually maximize every dollar that you budget for the future if you play your cards right. A professional can guide you toward savings opportunities that come with tax advantages, as well as high returns and interest yields.

Protect your wealth: Unexpected circumstances can disrupt even the best-laid plans. Account for such possibilities as market downturns, loss of income and the need for long-term care to reduce the risk of your important goals going unmet.

Stay calm: Money is the source of many emotions, including guilt and anxiety, and it is easy to get swept up in those negative feelings when you unmindfully spend money on vacations, dining out and other lifestyle experiences. Creating a budget can help you realistically balance fun, short-term goals with long-term financial security.

Partner with a professional: A certified financial professional can help you juggle competing financial priorities gracefully. Not only will they sit down with you to identify your objectives, but they also possess the expertise to guide you to the tools and strategies that will help you most easily reach your goals. A professional is also someone you can trust. They commit to act as a fiduciary and provide financial advice that is in their clients’ best interests.

From buying a house or car to financing your child’s education or wedding, smart strategies can help you meet life’s many exciting adventures with confidence.

How to Avoid Credit Card Skimmers

The Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center (FCIC) and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) have released a new public service announcement with helpful tips for avoiding possible credit card skimmers in gas pumps.

A video on TDLR’s YouTube channel discusses how thieves sometimes attach credit card skimmers on gas pumps to steal payment card information from customers when they purchase fuel.

Most skimmers have been placed deep inside the cabinet and it won’t be obvious that something’s wrong, but there are still some things consumers can check for before using a credit card at a gas station:

• Look at the pump and cabinet – does it look damaged, or look like it’s been tampered with?

• Wiggle the card slot – is it loose?

• Look at the keypad – is it loose or does it look like something has been placed on top of it?

Here are additional ways consumers can protect themselves:

• Always use a credit card, not a debit card, if they’re not going to pay cash – this protects the PIN and prevents access to a bank account

• Set card usage or transaction alerts for bank and credit card accounts. Most major banks offer apps that allow real-time monitoring of accounts.

• Regularly monitor credit card and bank statements for fraudulent charges or suspicious transactions

• When possible, don’t swipe the credit card – use tap to pay or use a trusted payment app on a mobile phone to pay for fuel

Whether a credit card skimmer is found by a consumer, a service technician or a merchant, the merchant is responsible for immediately notifying law enforcement and disabling all dispensers where skimmers have been located until law enforcement or TDLR investigators can remove the device. Merchants also are required by state law to notify TDLR within 24 hours. Merchants and consumers should report skimmers via the TDLR website: https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/Skimmers.

The FCIC, which coordinates law enforcement investigations into organized financial fraud, was the first statewide unit of its kind in the United States and operates as a partnership between TDLR and the Smith County District Attorney’s Office. TDLR regulates motor fuel metering and quality and collects consumer complaints and merchant reports related to credit card skimmers. The Smith County DA aggressively investigates and prosecutes criminals engaging in organized financial crimes such as fraud related to gasoline pump skimmers.

Can Your Home Withstand a Natural Disaster?

ith the frequency of natural disasters on the rise, it’s a good idea to think about the components of your house and whether they are built to withstand wicked weather.

Fortunately, manufacturers are stepping up to the plate to create home building products that are stronger and more reliable in the face of hurricanes, wildfires and other disasters. Here’s how you can take advantage of these innovations:

Roofing

If you’re building a home or re-roofing your current property, be sure to talk to your contractor about what roofing products they are using and ask about innovative steel products best-suited for your region. Whether you live in a hurricane-prone coastal community or in the path of wildfires, steel roofing can offer additional protection for your home. Steel roofs are non-combustible, have wind-resistant components and can help mitigate the risk of fire damage from chimneys, fire pits or wildfires.

Strong Windows

For optimal protection, you’ll want to ensure that your windows exceed your state and county’s strictest codes and requirements and are made from materials that will not only make a big difference during weather events, but also improve your everyday comfort and safety. For example, hurricane-impact windows that can withstand high-speed impacts typically offer more soundproofing than standard windows, dimming the roar of your neighbor’s early morning lawnmowing. They also make forced entry more difficult, providing an additional layer of security. And for those in wildfire-prone areas, dual pane tempered glass windows provide protection against flames and embers while offering enhanced insulation, a great benefit in extreme temperatures. During key times of year, install storm shutters or fire-rated shutters as an additional safety barrier.

Flooring

Just as your house’s exterior can benefit from the right materials, so too can your interiors. If you live in a coastal or other flood-prone area, traditional hardwood flooring is probably not the right choice for your ground floor or basement, as it can be prone to mildew, mold and warping. Instead, opt for newer flooring material options, such as vinyl meant to mimic the look and feel of real hardwood or engineered hardwood, made of composite materials with a thin, treated hardwood layer. Likewise, fire-resistant flooring can reduce the spread of flames through your home when every second counts. Thanks to the array of beautiful design options that are available today, popular fire-resistant choices include stone and concrete. By relying on the latest engineering innovations, you can help safeguard your property from top to bottom.

Biden-Harris Administration Takes New Steps to Lower Housing Costs, Speed Up Construction

n Tuesday, Aug. 13, the Biden administration announced a series of measures aimed at reducing housing costs by streamlining federal regulations and accelerating the construction of affordable homes. The new actions are part of President Joe Biden’s broader strategy to address the nationwide housing shortage and ease the financial burden on American families.

The administration’s Housing Supply Action Plan, launched last year, has led to more homes under construction than ever in the past five decades. The administration said it aims to build over 2 million new homes to alleviate pressure on the housing market, which has seen soaring prices and rents due to a lack of supply.

As part of the new measures, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that it’s making $100 million available through its Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO Housing) program.

The grants will help communities identify and eliminate barriers to affordable housing development, such as restrictive zoning laws and lengthy permitting processes.

The Treasury Department and HUD have also introduced changes to the Federal Financing Bank’s Multifamily Risk Sharing Program to provide more significant interest rate predictability for state and local housing finance agencies. Administration officials said the improvement should lower the cost of financing new housing developments and make more projects financially viable.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has also issued new guidance to simplify the loan process for residential projects near transit hubs. This includes allowing certain projects to bypass detailed environmental reviews, potentially reducing approval times by several months. Meanwhile, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) has proposed tools to expedite historic preservation reviews for federally funded housing projects, which could lower costs and speed up the delivery of affordable housing, especially in historically significant areas.

In another move, HUD is launching a Legacy Challenge to encourage communities to use up to $250 million in low-cost loans through the Section 108 Loan Guarantee Program for housing investments, including converting commercial buildings into residential units. In a fact sheet, the White House said the program offers flexible terms to attract more participants.

Finally, HUD is advancing updates to its Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards, allowing for the first time the construction of duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes under the HUD Code. The change is intended to lower costs and increase housing density in urban areas. According to the fact sheet, the administration has already facilitated nearly $20 billion in housing investments through the American Rescue Plan and other federal programs. It pushes state and local governments to follow suit by repurposing land and easing regulatory constraints.

Crème Brûlée

DIRECTIONS

rème brûlée is a decadent French dessert known for its silky, custard-like base and a contrastingly crisp, caramelized sugar top. The rich custard is infused with the delicate aroma of vanilla, creating a luxurious experience with every spoonful. After being baked to a perfect set, the custard is chilled, allowing the flavors to meld together. Just before serving, a layer of sugar is torched or broiled until golden and glassy, providing a satisfying crack as you break through to the creamy layer below. The blend of textures—smooth and creamy with a crunchy top—makes crème brûlée an elegant and indulgent treat.

Here's a classic crème brûlée recipe that’s rich, creamy, and has a perfect caramelized sugar top:

INGREDIENTS

2 cups heavy cream

1 vanilla bean (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)

5 large egg yolks

1/2 cup granulated sugar (plus extra for topping)

A pinch of salt

1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).

2. Prepare the Cream:

• If using a vanilla bean, split it lengthwise and scrape out the seeds.

• In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, vanilla bean seeds (or vanilla extract), and the pod (if using).

• Heat over medium heat until the cream starts to simmer. Do not let it boil.

• Remove from heat, cover, and let it steep for about 15 minutes to infuse the vanilla flavor.

3. Prepare the Custard:

• In a medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks, 1/2 cup of sugar, and a pinch of salt until the mixture is pale and slightly thickened.

- Gradually whisk the warm cream into the egg yolk mixture. Do this slowly to avoid cooking the eggs.

- Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into another bowl to remove any cooked egg bits and the vanilla pod.

4. Bake the Custard:

Divide the custard mixture evenly among 6 small ramekins.

Place the ramekins in a baking dish, and carefully pour hot water into the dish until it reaches halfway up the sides of the ramekins.

Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the custards are set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

Remove the ramekins from the water bath and let them cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least two hours, or overnight.

5. Caramelize the Sugar:

• Just before serving, sprinkle a thin, even layer of granulated sugar over each custard.

• Use a kitchen torch to melt and caramelize the sugar until it’s golden brown. If you don’t have a torch, place the ramekins under the broiler in your oven for one to two minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.

6. Serve:

- Let the crème brûlée sit for a minute to allow the sugar to harden before serving. Can be garnished with cinnamon sticks or an assortment of fruits.

Tips to Stay Connected During Natural Disasters

o matter where you live or what time of the year it is, individuals, families, businesses and others nationwide should be prepared for unpredictable weather and natural disasters – from hurricanes to tornadoes to wildfires. With some researchers forecasting a potentially record-breaking hurricane season and above normal risks for wildfires for some portions of the country this year, it’s important to be ready.

Effective communication is vital during disasters for receiving updates, talking with loved ones and reaching first responders. One of the most important things you can do ahead of time is learn how you can stay connected. Here are some tips on ways you can prepare and get the information you need to stay in the know when it matters most.

Keep phones and devices fully charged, and store back-up chargers and batteries. There’s nothing quite like losing power when your phone has a low battery, so keep devices full of juice. And make sure you have back-up chargers, portable chargers, and/or batteries so you can keep your devices on if your power goes out. You’ll also want to have a charger handy if you’re traveling. If you get stranded or stuck while driving, you’ll want a way to stay connected with loved ones or emergency services.

Add important numbers in your contacts. Most of us have friends, family and co-workers programmed in our phones. But in an emergency, you may need to contact local police, fire departments or power companies. Program these numbers now so you don’t spend precious time looking them up during an emergency.

Text instead of calling and keep calls short. Sometimes during a severe weather event or natural disaster, too many calls and texts at the same time can cause telecommunications networks to become congested. If you have trouble making calls, try texting instead. Text messages are more likely to get through than phone calls because they take up fewer network resources.

If you don’t have mobile service, try Wi-Fi calling. If your power and Wi-Fi connection are still on but your mobile service is down, you may be able to call someone via Wi-Fi.

Stay safe and calm. Network engineers prepare for weather conditions throughout the year so they can restore service if needed as soon as possible. But hazardous conditions may cause delays. Downed trees, power outages and other obstacles can hinder restoration efforts. Engineers will make repairs as soon as it’s safe to do so.

A few simple steps can help ensure that even during natural disasters and unexpected events, you’re able to connect with first responders and the people you love.
