How To Improve Cash Flow for Small Businesses By d-mars.com News Provider

T

he last few years have been rocky times for the 32.5 million U.S. small businesses, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). They have faced big challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, labor shortages, and rising inflation. These firms, which account for 43.5% of gross domestic product, are also facing a lending crunch. The Associated Press reported in April that banks have been less generous with loans. In 2019, about 50% of businesses received the full amount of loans they requested. But in 2021, it was 30% - a steep drop. Minority- and women-owned businesses also feel they have a big hill to climb when it comes to loans. For example, Black-owned businesses feel they are less likely to secure the full amount of financing they request. For women, a Bank of America study stated that 60% of female business owners felt they didn't have the same access to financing as male entrepreneurs. In the face of this challenging environment, more business owners are taking a hard look at how to improve cash flow, from traditional sources to emerging alternatives.

Traditional Traditional sources sources of of capital capital To fund their business ventures, business owners have typically turned to their personal savings or family and friends. Outside of that, bank loans remain a go-to option because of their relatively low rates. But those loans are becoming harder to secure. Another issue is that many banks require multiple years of financial records, which emerging companies may not be able to provide. Loan financing also comes with strings attached, such as administrative red tape, restrictions, the lag time in receiving the actual funds, and shorter coverage periods. Another "traditional" route is asset-based lending, which requires collateral. This type of capital has its own detractors, including substantially higher overhead to maintain and higher interest rates over time. Also, lenders prefer liquid assets such as securities, which many business owners may not have. A third option is factoring programs, which involve businesses selling their unpaid invoices in return for immediate working capital. Downsides

include lack of control and higher costs compared to regular loans. Another detractor is stigma - factoring may signal to customers possible cash flow problems.

Alternativesources sourcesofoffinancing financing Alternative Many business owners have now turned to alternatives such as online lenders and crowdfunding. Businesses with a new product have turned to crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. But there can be pitfalls. Setting up a campaign that goes viral and attracts supporters isn't guaranteed. Online lending platforms are another attractive form of financing, but while the cash flow may be instantaneous compared to traditional banks, these online loans come with higher interest rates and big late penalty fees. A cursory look at online lenders reveals APRs at 10% or higher. Traditional bank loans are 3% to 7%.

New Newsolutions solutionsfor financing and managing for financing and cash flow cash flow managing For business owners who find the drawbacks of traditional financing overwhelming or are leery of alternative modes, there is another route to consider when managing cash flow. Increasingly, nonbank companies are integrating bank-like services into their tech platforms, a concept known as embedded finance. These bank-like services could include payments and invoice processing and lending. Advantages of embedded financing, like Plaid or Apple Pay, are transparency, ease of transactions, the capture of relevant customer data, and they offer another revenue stream to businesses. Business owners who are considering this as a solution should consider speed and ease of payments, costs, and other benefits when deciding between platforms. For example, C2FO, a fintech software company, offers an integrated and secure platform where businesses can accelerate the payment of invoices while offering a discount to customers who pay early. An advantage of this platform is improved cash flow, giving the businesses the power to determine the best time and terms for getting paid. Business owners who partner with C2FO also sidestep the red tape and costs of traditional and alternative financing routes. For another solution, C2FO is now offering the C2FO CashFlow+TM Card, a new card that expands on C2FO's established early payment system. The process is as follows: Business owners choose which invoices to accelerate, and early payments are sent to the CashFlow+ Card. Where this differs from typical early pay is that there is no discount given to secure early payment when the card is used. Businesses get paid early and in full and then can use the card, which also offers 1% cash back on purchases. Business owners get rewarded for getting paid now so they can expand, transform and innovate - a different approach from more traditional and alternative means of getting capital.

Tips for Small Businesses To Not Only Survive, But Thrive By d-mars.com News Provider

S

mall businesses are the heartbeat of communities. They pump life into neighborhoods, making them vibrant places to live, work and raise families, and are key to millions of local jobs. In fact, approximately 50% of all Americans are employed by a small business and 99% of American businesses are small businesses, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. “Small business is big business,” said Wells Fargo’s head of Small Business Derek Ellington. “As a bank that proudly serves over 3 million small business customers, we are still supporting small businesses in their post-pandemic recovery, but we’re also seeing many growing businesses bringing new ideas to life, and going from surviving to thriving. Now more than ever, it’s an important time for small businesses because they are such a vital part of the economy.” To further power economic growth, strengthen your business, and deliver on the products and services the nation depends on every day, Wells Fargo offers the following four tips to move from surviving to thriving: 1. BE FLEXIBLE. If there was one glaring lesson business owners learned from COVID-19, it was to be flexible. Businesses had to revamp their online offerings and create a digital, ecommerce presence. Most had to change relationships with supply chains and vendors or reduce hiring. When it comes to business planning for the next six, 12, or even 18 months, one thing is certain: flexibility will be key. Between staffing demands, supply

chain delays, and rising interest rates and inflation, write your plans in pencil. Most importantly, be nimble enough to pivot, using your experiences over the past two years as a guide.

2. STAY IN THE KNOW. Stay informed of the latest developments that could impact your business. For example, what do rising rates and growing costs of supplies and services mean for you? A small business banker can help you understand your options based on your particular business and needs, and make any necessary adjustments. Keep in touch with your tax advisor, accountant, and local chambers of commerce to stay in the know. 3. PREPARE FOR NEW COMPETITION. Now that life has regained a sense of normalcy, new business trends are emerging fast. To prepare for new competition, stay ahead of your competitors and drive new growth:

solve their pain points • Ensure you have competitive pricing • Change your business model and services to stay ahead • Provide exceptional customer service to existing and new customers • Target new markets

4. INVEST IN GROWTH STRATEGICALLY. To continue to grow, innovate and attract the best employees, demonstrate that you’re willing to invest in the future. However, it’s never cheap, and you might not be able to afford needed investments with your current revenue. Before borrowing money or taking out a loan, consider opportunities like changing your payments or receivable collection process, or reducing expenses. Then look into the right lending opportunities when you are ready to accomplish big milestones like expanding, relocating, or adding new technologies with more capabilities. Strategic growth is all about investing in the right areas of your business at the right time to create an infrastructure in which you can flourish. Whether you’re a seasoned business owner or a new entrepreneur, consider using these tips to succeed and thrive in an ever-changing environment.

Black Service Shaping Contemporary Military History By d-mars.com News Provider

B

lack Americans have served in the U.S. Armed Forces since the Revolutionary War, paving the way for Black service members today.

“It is also important we foster an inclusive environment across the USO (United Service Organizations). One consistent finding of our service member surveys is the diverse population we serve feels welcome, supported, and included when visiting the USO,” said J.D. Crouch II, USO CEO, and president. “We should feel very proud of this but always stay attuned to improving the experience for them.”

Last month, during Juneteenth, the USO shared five stories of modern-day service members who are shaping contemporary military history.

1. Retired Lt. General Nadja West is no stranger to being a “first.” In 2013, West became the first Black female major general of the Army’s active component, as well as the Army Medicine’s first Black female two-star general.

In 2015, she became the first Black surgeon general of the Army. Finally, in 2016, she became the first Black female lieutenant general and highest-ranking woman to graduate from West Point. With more than 20 years of experience, she’s proved herself a decisive leader, helping lead the Department of Defense (DOD) through crafting the response to the Ebola crisis, and managing an $11 billion budget and 130,000 healthcare workers when she was commanding general of Medical Command.

2. Retired Lt. Col. Shawna Rochelle Kimbrell made headlines when she became the first Black female fighter pilot for the Air Force. Throughout her school years, she set her sights on the sky. As a kindergartner, she wanted to be an astronaut but soon shifted her focus from spaceships to jets. Determined, she joined the Civil Air Patrol, worked at air shows, earned a private pilot’s license, and earned a spot in the Air Force Academy. Although naysayers told her to have a backup plan because they believed her goals were unrealistic, to Kimbrell, that wasn’t an option. In 1988, Kimbrell graduated from the Air Force Academy and earned her pilot wings the following year.

She’s now a decorated Air Force veteran, having earned an Air Medal, an Aerial Achievement Medal, and an Army Commendation Medal, just to name a few. With a full, successful military career behind her, Kimbrell shows no signs of slowing down. Today, she dedicates her days to helping future officers at the Air Force Academy, where she teaches physical education and is the academy’s Director of Culture, Climate, and Diversity.

Members 3. The first-ever Black female plebe to attend and graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy, Janie L. Mines first stepped onto campus in 1976. “The academy wasn’t ready for [women],” Mines said in an interview with the DOD. “It just happened quickly, and it needed to be done. The academy considered itself to be a combat school, and [women] were not allowed to serve in combat. So, we were seen as taking up spots for good combat officers that were needed, because we ‘couldn’t do the job.’ Additionally, there was a general belief that as Black women … I would not be able to lead in what was at that time a white-male Navy.” Despite being accepted to other prestigious universities, Mines was determined to attend the Academy and answer the call to serve.

“When the Academy contacted me and said I was going to be the only Black woman who would be admitted, I felt like it was something I had to do.” After graduation, Mines went on to become a lieutenant in the Navy Supply Corps and one of the first women to ever serve on a Navy ship. Today, she mentors young midshipmen, is the author of “No Coincidences: Reflections of the First Black Female Graduate of the United States Naval Academy” and is a member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service.

4. On January 21, 2021, retired Gen. Lloyd Austin was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a near-unanimous vote to become the first Black defense secretary of the United States. A retired Army four-star general, he previously attended West Point and was soon commissioned as a second lieutenant. Austin served more than 40 years in the Army. He was the 33rd vice chief of staff of the branch and was the last commanding general of the U.S. Forces – Iraq Operation New Dawn. In 2013,

President Barack Obama appointed him commander of United States Central Command, making Austin the first Black person to ever hold the position. In 2016, he retired from the military as a decorated and distinguished Army veteran with many honors, including a Silver Star and Humanitarian Service Medal. In the private sector, he served on several boards until President Joe Biden nominated him to be secretary of defense in 2021 -- where he serves today.

5. Retired Col. Merryl Tengesdal is the first, and currently the only, Black woman to fly a U-2 spy plane, which is utilized for the Air Force’s high-altitude missions. After graduating from the University of New Haven, Tengesdal first served in the Navy flying helicopters. She went on to become an instructor pilot, training Navy and Air Force students at Joint Student Undergraduate Pilot Training. She transferred to the Air Force when her Naval obligation was complete. Though she describes being the first Black woman to fly a U-2 plane as “surreal,” she also says it’s a “blind spot.”

“I try not to get caught up in being the only Black female. I just want to keep being inspirational and motivational for other people,” Tengesdal said. During training, Tengesdal’s instructors told her there would always be people who would say she was there because of her race and gender, and others who would say she shouldn’t be there because of those things. One instructor reminded her that she was incredibly talented and would keep proving to others that she belongs at the top – and soon enough, the critics wouldn’t have those excuses anymore. Today, she reflects on that conversation in instances of self-doubt. Tengesdal retired in 2017 and has had many adventures since, including being a contestant on “Tough as Nails,” a CBS reality show.

KTSU 90.9FM

Making an Impact f Years & Counting

50 By d-mars.com News Provider

T

his year Texas Southern University’s (TSU) award-winning KTSU 90.9FM “The Choice” celebrates 50 years as a global radio platform that continues to leave its impactful footprint on and off the mic. KTSU recently kicked off the year-long celebration with its listeners and supporters, hosting their 50th Anniversary Backyard Party outside the KTSU station that was free for the community. The party welcomed local artists Mary Griffin, Spud Howard, Melanie Covington, and other talent and entertainment.

“Without the support of the listening audience, KTSU’s success would not be possible. Leading programming at KTSU, I appreciate that Mr. Walker is a visionary, seeing where radio is going. We are truly a community station, and listeners should be excited about what is to come.” —Donna Franklin, KTSU program director

How It Started… The TSU Board of Regents was issued a license by the Federal Communications Commission in 1972. KTSU first hit the air the following year, on June 23, 1973, with just 10 watts of power. That day, KTSU became the first AfricanAmerican FM station on Houston’s airwaves. The first song ever played on KTSU was “The Funky Worm” by the Ohio Players. To date, KTSU remains a source of local music of all genres, and a destination for jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and more.

How It’s Going… If you want to be successful in this industry, you can’t just look at where radio is now, but you have to possess the ability to think ahead to where it is going. Since the baton of general manager has been passed to Ernest Walker in 2016, he remains a strong, effective, dedicated, passionate, and strategic visionary who has the ability to not only think outside

of the box but execute a robust business model that has opened the path for the elevation of KTSU and its continuous expansion. A thought leader, Walker has a track record as a veteran in the music and entertainment industry that makes him more than qualified to lead KTSU. But long before Walker took the helm, he was connected to KTSU, growing up listening to the station. “My love for KTSU was birthed through my grandparents. Listening to Gospel Sunday on KTSU in their home was a tradition I was raised on. Also, I come from a musical family, and The Walker Brothers was a gospel group formed by members of our family. Their music was regularly played on KTSU. I find it a privilege to be able to lead and give back to KTSU, as this station has

given so much to my family and countless around the world through its music and content,” says Walker. KTSU is a training platform for students enrolled at TSU’s School of Communications. In 2019, the station launched KTSU2 “The Voice,” a student-run streaming radio platform. KTSU expanded further with the launch of The Vibe in 2020. The Vibe is the digital and innovative urban alternative station, powered by KTSU, that appeals to Millennials and Generation Z, offering the latest in hip-hop, R&B, and neo-soul on the FM dial and through 24-hour streaming. And expect more announcements of additional major platforms and talent coming to KTSU in the coming months! Walker’s ideas and leadership would be ineffective without a strong team of like-minded individuals standing with him to drive KTSU forward. Donna Franklin is KTSU’s program director as well as a radio host on the platform and finds this one of the most rewarding positions she has ever had after almost 30 years in broadcasting. “When Mr. Walker accepted the calling as general manager, we moved at an accelerated pace, and there are no signs of slowing down. Everyone here from the hosts to the staff, students, and leadership has a

Q&A With KTSU Leadership, Ernest Walker and Donna Franklin:

for “For 50 years, KTSU has been committed to the greater good of Houston. Not only is KTSU a source of entertainment, but it is a major component of outreach as a source of news and public affairs information that ensures our listeners know what’s happening in the community around them. We are thankful for the members who support us, and for every listener who makes KTSU a part of their daily routine. We are also grateful for the continued support KTSU receives from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.” —Ernest Walker, KTSU general manager

deep love for this radio station, and we stand on our own merit.” Franklin says. KTSU truly stands on being a community-driven station with proven action supporting local artists and talent, providing exposure for their music on the platform. The station has been instrumental in helping well-known talent and labels catapult to the level they are on today. This platform was the first African American station to introduce hip-hop to Houston listeners on the historic campus of TSU. KTSU was one of the first stations to play The Geto Boys (originally spelled Ghetto Boys) and the music under the James Prince aka “J Prince” label, Rap-A-Lot. As KTSU celebrates 50 years, this milestone means so much on a deeper level as it has been and remains a beacon in the Houston community.

DMARS: Talk about how the station has evolved over the years and how your programming has stayed current with the trends to sustain a strong and loyal audience. KTSU: This is a mission and a calling as general manager, and that’s why I’m so passionate about KTSU. As God has ordained all of this, I approach this position with a solid business model, leading this talented team as a servant-leader. Part of evolving is pouring into our young people, not only through words, but actions. Our students feel a part of KTSU, and they know we truly care about them while demanding greatness at the same time. Our internship program can stand against any around the country, preparing our students to be successful in the competitive field of radio and broadcasting. And we not only educate them when it comes to skills but also music. We are open to providing music they like, but expose them to music they are not used to experiencing. Our students know they have a voice. That’s a major way we evolve. The students are the future. They are the leaders, so we must teach them every part of this industry so they are prepared to lead. KTSU is a music discovery platform. While yes, we play what’s current, we don’t just play your expected rotation of trending music. As we have freedom, this platform plays the music of local artists. Our listeners are excited to hear new music. What keeps us evolving is that we are not in competition with any other platform and remain uniquely us. That resonates with the community. The impact we make off the mic, volunteering and through community events keeps us present in the community, touching Houston beyond the music. - EW DMARS: How is KTSU continuing to evolve to meet the growing needs of an ever-expanding audience? KTSU: Mr. Walker is about each and every member of this team making an IMPACT in our role. This mindset is not only a part of his business development strategy but being impactful in our role is how we evolve. We are each held accountable for our individual roles, but work as a team. Another major platform is coming soon to KTSU. I won’t say too much until the official announcement, but let me just say that no one can tell our story better than we can. As the world is turning right before our eyes, this new platform KTSU is adding will be an outlet for the culture that is needed now more than ever before. - DF

DMARS: Talk about the success of KTSU2 “The Voice” and how this student-run streaming radio platform is providing the tools for the next generation to excel in this industry. KTSU: KTSU2 is a collaborative effort with TSU’s School of Communications. KTSU2 was built to focus on the students, meeting their needs to be educated so they are prepared for the real world of broadcasting. Talking to industry experts prior to KTSU2, our students were not fully prepared. Our students are a reflection of TSU and KTSU, so if they are not prepared for broadcasting, who does that reflect on? Us, that’s who. So partnering with the School of Communications and building a stronger program, industry leaders give a TSU graduate’s resume a closer look and our graduates excel in their broadcasting careers. - EW DMARS: What is your message to listeners and the community? KTSU: Thank you for listening, sponsoring, being a KTSU member, and supporting. Please share this station and platform with your circles, church, co-workers, civic clubs, organizations, and family. While yes, KTSU continues to grow, word of mouth is one of the best forms of marketing. The Houston Metro population surpasses 7.1M, with the region adding 250 people a day (Greater Houston Partnership). So, as Houston grows, word of mouth helps reach those new to the city and surrounding areas. Continue to share and partner with us to help grow our listenership. This is our community. This is our station. - EW Numbers don’t lie. We would not be where we are without the listeners. KTSU has such a loyal listenership. Once they are in, they are in. They are totally engaged. And the businesses who support KTSU grow because of our loyal listenership around the city, nation, and globe. We look forward to bringing more programming to our community that also serves as a platform strengthening the business community. - DF KTSU is celebrating its 50-year mark all year long with a cruise, jazz concert, and stage play telling the story of KTSU’s 50-year span written by nationally known playwright and TSU alum Thomas Meloncon. You can listen to KTSU 24/7 and support KTSU by becoming a KTSU member, volunteer, or business underwriter. For everything you need and want to know about KTSU, visit www.ktsuradio.com.

New Research Sheds Light on How People Are Taking Civic Action By d-mars.com News Provider

N

ew research is offering insights into how the world can recover and rebuild from the pandemic, along with how individuals and organizations can address issues they care about in their communities. “Civic Life Today: The State of Global Civic Engagement,” which was commissioned by Points of Light and designed and executed by INFLUENCE|SG, studied attitudes around civic engagement in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and Brazil. “We believe that the most powerful force is the individual who has realized their power to make change happen. However, everyone can be more impactful when working together,” says Natalye Paquin, president and CEO of Points of Light, the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to accelerating people-powered change. “This report is intended to reveal ways to act effectively -- making it easier for individuals to find these opportunities and organizations to create them.” The report also supports Points of Light’s Civic Circle, a framework that helps people understand that there are many ways to do good. The nine activities outlined by the Civic Circle are: listening and learning, using one’s voice, social entrepreneurship, volunteering, public, national or military service, using one’s purchasing power to express values, working, voting, and donating. Whether you’re a business leader hoping to mobilize your employees, a nonprofit or NGO leader looking to connect individuals to your cause, or an individual wanting to support your community, the Civic Circle and these key report takeaways can help you get started: • Pandemic effects are universal: The same social issues and personal costs have been shared by people everywhere. At the country level, healthcare, education, and the environment/ climate demand

attention. On a personal level, the health of others in the community is where the most impact has been felt, followed by individuals’ financial and mental health. • Issues leading civic engagement: Education, the environment, and healthcare were the top issues respondents wanted their countries to support, with healthcare ranked the leading issue in the United States. • How people prefer to take action: The most common Civic Circle actions taken by respondents were using one’s voice (influencing one’s network through social media, advocacy, or other forms of expression), listening, and learning (learning about a cause or social issue), and volunteering (intentionally helping someone else). However, perceived barriers to civic engagement linger -- two of the top three reasons people cited for a lack of social issue involvement were financial in nature, reflecting the perception that being

civically involved means donating money. • Virtual volunteering is here to stay: Volunteerism has not only remained important, but it’s also on the rise, with 54% of global respondents saying, “I plan to volunteer more than I did before the pandemic.” Of those, the vast majority intend to do so primarily via virtual opportunities. • Calls for corporate involvement: Individuals see companies as having an obligation to get involved. Indeed, a majority of respondents said they expect companies to address social challenges. At the same time, respondents are measuring a given company’s sincerity by the way it treats its employees.

To watch a webinar recently hosted by Points of light with INFLUENCE|SG to discuss the research findings in more detail and to download the report, visit pointsoflight.org/civic-engagement-research. “At a time when the whole world is facing a common challenge, we’re excited to see people take action. According to this report, 80% of Americans took at least one civic action in a 30-day period, up from 52% in May 2020. That statistic itself is amazing,” says Paquin. “If we hope to move forward together, it’s this positive energy that we must capture.” Source: StatePoint

The University offers degrees in business administration, accounting, finance, management, marketing, and management information systems. In its letter informing the school of the accreditation decision, AACSB highlighted several commendations and best practices that demonstrate leadership and high-quality continuous improvement in management education, calling the depth and breadth of commitment of the Business Advisory

Accreditation means the school will continue to be associated with the highest standards in business education, a status earned by less than five percent of the world’s business schools. The school’s graduates have moved on to leadership roles in major corporations throughout the world, including a range of business, non-profit, and governmental organizations. “Texas Southern is proud of its School of Business and the hard work the faculty, staff, students, and alumni have done that resulted in this accreditation renewal,” said Dr. Lillian B. Poats, acting provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “This ensures the school’s ability to educate more bright young minds who will serve and lead in the Houston region, the state of Texas, and across the nation.” The next on-site continuous improvement review from AACSB occurs in 2026-2027. CRNAs Provide Patients With Continuous, Compassionate Care By d-mars.com News Provider

W

hen patients hear that they'll need anesthesia to undergo surgery or a procedure, they'll likely start to worry. According to a study by the National Institutes of Health, 88% percent of patients experience preanesthetic fear, and in some cases that fear even causes anxious patients to cancel surgeries. A recent American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) Foundation study on public perceptions of anesthesia found that adults worry more about their children receiving anesthesia than themselves. "AANA study respondents reported, however, that an in-person discussion of the anesthesia delivery plan could reduce those concerns," said AANA President Dina F. Velocci, DNP, CRNA, APRN. "Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists provide this with holistic, patient-centered care before, during, and after anesthesia delivery." Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are anesthesia professionals who safely administer more than 50 million anesthetics to patients each year in the United States. They make up more than 50% of the U.S. anesthesia workforce and specialize in airway management, intubation, advanced patient assessment, and patient safety. Beyond administering safe anesthesia, they enhance the patient experience. Nurse anesthetists spend time with patients before, during, and after surgeries, providing continuous, holistic care with compassion. They are committed to patient safety and are members of one of the most trusted professions, according to Gallup. This trust and dedication to patient care have been a hallmark of CRNA anesthesia delivery since the profession started when nurses provided anesthesia to wounded soldiers on the Civil War battlefields. "CRNAs are highly educated and skilled anesthesia experts who deliver specialized care to all patients - from infants to seniors - for every type of procedure in all types of facilities," said Velocci. "Every day, CRNAs show up as health care leaders who are able to provide in-the-moment personalized care in mindful ways that address the patient's needs physically and emotionally." This is true in the operating room as well as in health care systems. With years of critical care practice before entering nurse anesthesiology training, CRNAs have a hands-on understanding of how health care is delivered from start to finish, allowing them to calm patients' fears of anesthesia and surgery, leading to better post-procedure outcomes. "CRNAs are always at a patient's side from the moment we meet the patient in pre-op, through their surgery, and in post-op," said Velocci. "Patients can rest assured that a CRNA is serving as their advocate during surgical procedures."

Experienced Experiencedanesthesia anesthesiaproviders providers As advanced practice registered nurses with specialized education and clinical experience in anesthesia delivery, CRNAs are trained to handle all aspects of anesthesia care. CRNAs have a minimum of 7 to 8½ years of clinical experience and training before they are licensed to deliver anesthesia. They are qualified to make independent

judgments regarding all aspects of anesthesia care based on their education, licensure, and certification. CRNAs are the only anesthesia professionals with critical care experience before beginning formal anesthesia education. Because of the rigorous academic and clinical requirements for their recertification, CRNAs are well versed in the latest advancements so that patients receive the best, safest care possible.

Where Wheredo dothey theypractice? practice? Nurse anesthetists collaborate with surgeons, dentists, podiatrists, physician anesthesiologists, and other qualified health care professionals to provide anesthesia. You'll find nurse anesthetists at hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, clinics, dentists' offices, the military, public health service, and veteran health care facilities. In rural areas, CRNAs are crucial to providing medical care, providing more than 80% of the anesthesia in rural counties. Half of U.S. rural hospitals use a CRNA-only model for obstetric care. Because of the presence of a CRNA to provide safe pain management, patients are saved long drives of 75 miles or more to access the care they need.

Thevalue valueof ofCRNAs CRNAs The CRNAs know what works, what does not, and what needs to be done to improve the U.S. health care system. They see firsthand the results of racism and inequality, poverty, violence, substance abuse, unequal education, and inadequate mental health care. Nurse anesthetists are critical thinkers who approach these health care issues with the patient care continuum in mind. CRNAs are also efficient and cost-effective. CRNAs deliver anesthesia, avoid duplication of services, promote efficient anesthesia providers' utilization and reduce cost. As the U.S. continues to experience limited health care resources, CRNAs are vital to continuing anesthesia in all settings. "CRNAs provide courageous, compassionate care wherever they are needed," said Velocci. "Without nurse anesthetists, patients would lose their primary advocate, and our country would lose part of its largest health profession." Experiencing These Symptoms? It’s Time To Think Migraine “I’m fine,” is a phrase Kelsey Voskamp, a Colorado resident, used many times in her life while pushing through what she thought were just headaches. Like many others who are misdiagnosed or undertreated, Voskamp didn’t realize she experienced a neurological disease called migraine and didn’t know how to explain to her family, and even her doctor, how debilitating her migraine attacks were. There are a variety of reasons why people with migraine are underdiagnosed and undertreated. Oftentimes, people experiencing symptoms such as light and sound sensitivity, and nausea with a significant disabling headache don’t recognize it as a migraine. The recent OVERCOME study, presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society revealed that among those who experienced these migraine symptoms, approximately half hesitated to seek care, and even fewer received a diagnosis and received the treatment they needed. “I didn’t realize there was a name for what I was experiencing until I spoke with my doctor,” said Voskamp, “Having the right diagnosis can make all the difference.”

How Religion and Spirituality Play a Role in Mental Health Recovery Tami V. Allen, MS, LPC Contributing Writer

R

eligion and spirituality are both rooted in understanding how a relationship with one’s higher power influences the meaning of life. Though both religion and spirituality are closely related, they play differing roles. Religion is a structured, collective belief system, and spirituality is within an individual based on personal beliefs. If you practice religion, you have spirituality, however, someone who has spirituality may not necessarily ascribe to a religion. Either way, they both can have a positive influence on mental health by helping individuals through tough times and generating forgiveness, purpose, and peace. If you do some digging, you will find research that suggests that religion and spirituality reduce suicide rates, substance abuse, and other behaviors that convict people from making poor decisions. Religion offers the benefits of the community providing social connections with others, a sense of belonging, and trustworthy and safe social interactions. Another benefit is that rituals provide predictability

and structure, time to rest at special times of the year, and helps to cope with difficult life transitions. Lastly, religion teaches forgiveness, gratitude, and compassion, life lessons, principles, and guidelines to live by such as doing the right thing. Sometimes mental health problems arise genetically and other times situationally. In either case, an individual can feel burdened with trouble coping with daily life. Mental and emotional challenges should always be addressed with a therapist and/or a psychiatrist, however, spiritual beliefs help individuals grow and progress to reach their highest potential and find meaning and purpose in life. Recovering from mental illness is a process of integrative care focusing on mind, body, and spirit. Physical health, exercise, psychotherapy, healthy eating, and spirituality are all a part of holistic care. Integrating spirituality in mental health care achieves wellness for the mind and aids in the recovery process.

Staying Socially Active May Enrich Mental Fitness By d-mars.com News Provider

W

hen you think about exercise, you likely think about the physical health benefits of working out. Many people exercise regularly to lose or maintain weight, improve muscle tone and strength or increase flexibility. For seniors, physical activity can help them stay mobile and, as a result, stay independent for longer. However, the benefits of exercise go beyond the physical and can potentially enrich your social life and mental state.

Stayingsocial socialas asyou youage age Staying Loneliness is a common problem for seniors and can have serious consequences on their overall well-being. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than a quarter of adults over 65 are socially isolated. Older adults are more likely to live alone and lose friends and family as they age. The CDC also reports that social isolation in adults 50 or older has been associated with higher risks of dementia, depression, anxiety and other health problems. While these facts may be grim, there are many ways to combat loneliness, including

group exercise. Health psychologist Kelly McGonigal in her book The Joy of Movement, explains that endorphins (the feel-good hormone) released during exercise also help us bond with others. If you've ever played team sports or regularly attended yoga or other group fitness classes, you've probably felt a camaraderie with those around you. Programs like SilverSneakers by Tivity Health offer many types of group activities that make a difference in the lives of seniors. The company's 2021 Annual Member Survey revealed that 88% of members said that the program improved their quality of life and 52% made new and valuable friendships by participating. To further improve seniors' social engagement, the program has partnered with Stitch, the world's largest social community helping older adults create enriching social connections. The platform is now available to SilverSneakers members in participating health plans and allows them to connect around shared interests, like traveling, books, and physical activities, virtually and in person.

Boost Boostyour yourbrain brainhealth healththrough through exercise exercise Movement and activity can also improve your mood and prevent mental health and mood disorders. The

SilverSneakers Annual member survey found that depression among participants is 64% less prevalent than the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services national benchmark. Also, according to the CDC, regular physical activity can reduce the risk of cognitive decline, including dementia, and improves your ability to think, learn and problem solve. This way, exercise works as a form of mental enrichment, an essential component of senior health. Mental enrichment comes in many different forms, such as doing crossword puzzles or sudoku or learning a new hobby or activity. You can work out your muscles and your brain by taking up a new exercise class, such as trying Tai Chi, water aerobics, or a dance class. The virtual learning platform offers mental enrichment activities specifically designed for seniors with a wide range of online classes through a video platform

HBCUs, Industry Partners Launch Initiative to Diversify and Strengthen Cybersecurity Workforce By d-mars.com News Provider

T

o address the urgent cybersecurity talent needs in the U.S., Advancing Minorities' Interest in Engineering (AMIE) announced a new collaboration to support cybersecurity education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Together with industry partners Abbott, Microsoft, and Raytheon Technologies, the HBCU Cybersecurity Industry Collaboration Initiative Pilot aims to build curriculum capacity within HBCU engineering schools, positioning them as premier national academic institutions for cybersecurity, while creating a strong workforce of students well-prepared for the world's essential cybersecurity careers. The initiative expects to support HBCUs through curriculum development, research collaboration, faculty support, and other resources. Right now, there are nearly 600,000 open cybersecurity jobs in the U.S. and experts anticipate there will be 3.5 million cybersecurity jobs open globally by 2025. "Our hope is that the initiative will enhance cybersecurity programming at HBCUs, helping connect students, especially AfricanAmerican students, with opportunities to pursue cybersecurity certifications and degrees," said Veronica L. Nelson, AMIE's executive director. "This effort couldn't come at a more critical time. The U.S. greatly needs skilled cybersecurity workers. HBCU Engineering Schools represent a rich pipeline of untapped, diverse talent." The 15 Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)-accredited HBCU Schools of Engineering produce more than 30% of the African-American engineers in the U.S. while representing less than 3% of the engineering universities in the U.S. Data from the U.S.

Department of Labor shows Blacks and AfricanAmericans make up only 11.8% of information security analysts in the U.S. The initiative's pilot incorporates expertise and support from Abbott, Microsoft, and Raytheon Technologies with the goal of aligning business needs to the pilot schools' cybersecurity curricula and research capabilities. The four HBCU pilot engineering schools of the 15 member schools of the Council of HBCU Engineering Deans are Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, Prairie View A&M University, and Virginia State University. • Professionals from Abbott, Microsoft, and Raytheon Technologies will be guest lecturers, participate in mentoring programs and meet with faculty to better understand existing strengths and collaborate toward educating more cybersecurity professionals to help address the nation's talent gap. • Microsoft is providing funding and support as part of its Cybersecurity Skills Initiative. • Abbott is providing funding and hosting two Prairie View A&M University cybersecurity students for customized intern experiences during summer 2022. • Raytheon Technologies is providing funding and works with local students to showcase their cyber capabilities and provide opportunities for students to explore cyber careers.

"With the complete integration of Industry 4.0 or 'smart' technologies into so many aspects of our lives, VSU now sees almost every company we work with needing cybersecurity-trained professionals to secure their products, services, and their business operations," said Dr. Dawit Haile, Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology at Virginia State University. "This includes industries that we never would have previously considered in this context, like manufacturing, construction, and energy. VSU understands that cybersecurity skills are now part of a critical core knowledge base and we are committed to delivering a strong pipeline of students who are well-prepared in this area."

The pilot will run through the end of 2022 with the goal of extending the initiative to the remaining 11 ABETaccredited HBCU Schools of Engineering in the future: Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, Howard University, Jackson State University, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, Southern University, Tennessee State University, Tuskegee University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and the University of the District of Columbia. "In today's digital-first world, skilled cybersecurity workers are critical to ensuring the safety of our enterprise as well as the products and technologies we provide people to live better, healthier lives," said Sabina Ewing, Chief Information Officer, Abbott. "That's why, as a founding member of Advancing Minorities' Interest in Engineering, Abbott supports efforts like the HBCU Cybersecurity Industry Collaboration Initiative Pilot, which develops HBCU talent to build a diverse, innovative workforce that will meet the demands of today and tomorrow." "We are excited to embark on this collaboration with AMIE to broaden education in cybersecurity at HBCUs," said Valecia Maclin, Microsoft Partner, Strategic Cloud Solutions, and AMIE board member. "The pre-eminent role that HBCUs play in graduating the best and brightest engineering talent in the U.S. coupled with our passion to extend global cybersecurity skilling is a unique collaboration and critical for the time that we are in. As part of our commitment to address America's cybersecurity workforce shortage, we look forward to working together to create a workforce that represents the diversity of our society." "Closing the enormous cybersecurity skills gap and driving diversity in our talent pipeline are critical business imperatives for our company and industry," said Shanda Hinton, Chief Diversity Officer, Raytheon Technologies. "This alliance offers real-world education, experience, and mentorship opportunities to HBCU engineering students to help cultivate the next generation of cyber defenders."

Job Hunting Tips: The Importance of Upskilling in a Jobseekers’ Market

In addition to upskilling, take the opportunity to ask questions about company benefits. Ask about health and personal benefits including tuition reimbursement, a company performance-based cash bonus program, discounts on cell phones, paid parental leave, 401(k) savings plan with company match, and a discount company stock purchase program.

re you looking for a job, but want more than a paycheck? Do you want to be able to learn, grow and thrive in your new position, but you're not sure where to start? The top factor that makes for an exceptional work environment is access to opportunities to learn and grow, according to LinkedIn Learning's 2022 Skills Advantage Report. That's a shift from just two years ago when employees ranked access to growth opportunities as the ninth most important factor to a fulfilling workplace. Both the workplace and job market have changed, and employers are taking notice. While there is no shortage of open positions in this jobseekers' market, not all positions provide an opportunity to grow. To set yourself up for success in your new job now and into the future, keep these tips in mind when job hunting.

Through its Career Mobility Program, The Home Depot aims to provide hourly associates a path to corporate experience. The 8-week program provides associates with development sessions, training courses, and networking circles to further diversify skill sets and learn more about corporate careers. The goal is for associates to exit the program with a roadmap and clearly outlined next steps to help them grow.

If you're looking for a job to help accelerate your professional growth, ask about opportunities to grow your career at your next interview. An example of how companies help their associates grow is by providing opportunities for upskilling. Upskilling programs teach employees new skills and can help open doors for a future career shift, making sure work stays interesting. "In today's climate, jobseekers are shopping for the best opportunity," said Eric Schelling, vice president of global talent acquisition at The Home Depot, a Forbes' World's Best Employer. "At The Home Depot, they'll find a company that offers much more than a job and a paycheck. Jobseekers will find upskilling programs that can teach and expose them to new skills in other functions like software development, cyber security, data science, marketing, supply chain and finance."

While many companies have introduced speed hiring initiatives to appeal to job seekers ready to jump on an opportunity, it's important to ask questions during an interview to make the right decision for you. If career growth is a priority, here are some questions to ask: • What skills are needed to succeed in this position? • What opportunities are there to learn new skills? • Is there an upskilling program for employees? • What are some examples of skills that can be learned through upskilling at this job? • Are there advancement opportunities for employees who upskill?

Think about the future and where you'd like to be in one, five, or even 10 years. Then make a plan to reach your goals. One career area that is booming is technology, so if you get the opportunity to learn new skills, embrace them. For example, even if you don't have a background in technology, you can have access to on-the-job training with The Home Depot. As a value-based company, the associate-first approach has allowed them to help their employees build and advance careers internally. Americans Still Have Financial Goals, Just Not Sure How They Will Reach Them By d-mars.com News Provider

F

f you have a vision for where you'd like to be financially in the coming years - but no clear idea of how to get there - you're far from alone. In fact, a recent survey by Wakefield Research and financial services company Digit (now a part of Oportun) found that 78% of American adults with financial goals have no strategy in place for reaching those goals. Unfortunately, with challenges like student loan debt and rising inflation, financial planning is more difficult than it has ever been. These challenges may mean people are missing out on opportunities to build financial security and prosperity as they move through their lives, at any monthly income. "Although most of us recognize the importance of smart financial planning, money management is challenging, complex, and time-consuming," notes Snigdha Kumar, head of product operations for

Digit. "Consumers often think they aren't in a position to take advantage of sound wealth-building strategies that will benefit them over time when there are technology tools out there like Digit that can help them find ways to save and invest ."

That concerning trend is reflected in these other That concerning trend is reflected survey in thesefindings: other survey findings: • Young people are especially concerned about having no financial plans in place; those who say they're worried include 95% of Gen Z-ers, 92% of millennials, 84% of Gen X-ers, and 60% of baby boomers. • Nearly three in five respondents

(58%) consider managing their money more mentally demanding than solving crossword puzzles. • Respondents spend an average of four hours per month managing their money, and in spite of AI technology tools that could help them, 37% rely on pen-and-paper methods to do so - including 30% of Gen Z-ers and 28% of millennials. • A significant 44% reported being at least somewhat likely to dip into their savings during the first three months of 2022, and 27% said they were very likely to do so. • A full 13% of all respondents (and 19% of women respondents) say they have no savings at all from which to draw.

The good news is that Digit by Oportun can help you manage your money with confidence and less stress by intelligently (and automatically) budgeting, saving and investing according to your short-term needs and long-term goals. Digit uses advanced technology to analyze your full financial picture and make smart money decisions for you - with no need for

additional tools or mental math. Available for download on Apple or Android devices, Digit members are setting aside more than $3,000 per year on average (based on daily average saves of all paying Digit members in 2021). As Kumar points out, having a solid financial plan in place can mean more than just financial freedom. In fact, 92% of survey respondents report feeling less daily anxiety when their finances are under control. And 70% of those who directly manage their own finances (including those who use apps for that purpose) report having a positive relationship with money. "There's really no substitute for financial peace of mind," Kumar advises. "And there's no longer any need to spend hours each month trying to determine the best courses of action for managing your hard-earned money. AI technology can streamline that process on your behalf so you can spend that time and energy elsewhere, but still know you're on a sound financial path." Source: BPT

Things that need to be done to prepare for your transition or the transition of a loved one

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” - Matthew 24:36

No one gets out alive!

By James Marshall Contributing Writer

A

nd the best thing we can do to ease the pain of our loved ones is to make sure our affairs are in good order.

The following are documents you should have in place and keep updated: • Last Will and Testament: This document decides the fate of all your real property, trust, and belongings. It also names the person (executor) in charge of carrying out your wishes as described in your will (choose this person wisely). • Living Will (Advanced Directive): This document details your wishes regarding medical treatment when you are unable to communicate them. Such as resuscitation, tube feeding, mechanical ventilation, organ donation, or palliative care. • Health Care Power of Attorney: This document will name the person or persons who can make decisions for you about the details outlined in your living will.

• HIPAA Authorization for release of protected health information • Durable Power of Attorney: This document gives someone of your choosing the right to make all important financial decisions about your estate before you die.

“And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it” - Ecclesiastes 12:7

Make sure that you have an updated inventory of your stuff: • Assets • Debts • Income sources • Expenses • Taxes • Life insurance and beneficiaries (remember beneficiaries override your will unless your estate is your beneficiary).

A comprehensive financial plan will include all of this information. Be sure to list institutions and account numbers for all these items. Create a file with all your deeds, registrations, and other proof of ownership documents. Don't forget to make a list of all your digital accounts, usernames, and passwords for: • Computers, tablets, and cellphones • Social media sites

• Emails and any other online portal or service you use

Most importantly; make sure you communicate fully with specific people about your wishes, mainly your spouse or significant other. Make sure they know: • The location of your important paperwork and documents • Where to find the key or combination of any safes or safe deposit boxes • The location of any money you have stashed in secret hiding places • The names of your professional advisors, i.e., financial advisor, attorney, accountant, insurance agent, etc.

This is how you assure a good goodbye. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whomever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” - John 11:25-26 Outline your funeral arrangements with as much detail as you can. Your loved ones will be grieving, and any stress you can take off them by making your wishes clear and with instructions will be helpful. Your wishes may include:

• End-of-life wishes - burial, cremation, donating to science, etc.

• Ceremony - funeral home, casket/ urn, church, wake, memorial service, and cemetery • Music- What songs do you want to be sung and who would you like to sing them? • peakers- Who do you want to give your eulogy and whom else do you want to speak? • Pallbearers- Make a list of primary and honorary pallbearers. • Guests - Make a list of family and friends you want to be contacted. Be sure to include their contact information. • Organization memberships - Be sure to make a list of any organizations that you belong to that may have transition rituals or may want to participate in your homegoing. Organizations such as military, fraternal, church, etc.

Psalm 23 King James Version 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Is Your Home Truly Ready To Sell? By Marla Lewis President of the Houston Black Real Estate Association

I

f you’re thinking of selling your home in today’s red-hot market, finding the right Realtor is the first step to take. Your Realtor will be able to help you determine the right price, the kinds of marketing that work well for your property, and much more. But you can also be a proactive seller by checking into these basic home maintenance issues before putting your house on the market: Check the roof. Find out if there is damage to your roof, especially if your area experiences severe weather. Hail is particularly damaging. For safety purposes, it might be in your best interest to hire a professional to check it out for you. Inspect the attic. In your attic, check for any roof leaks and signs of termites or rodents. Squirrels or rats nesting in your attic are not particular about what they chew, and they sometimes gnaw electrical wiring, which can lead to damaged infrastructure or fire. Navigating your attic can be dangerous, so use caution or hire a professional to inspect it for you. Check out the paint. It may seem cosmetic, but paint is a first line of defense against the weathering and aging of wood. Also, damaged paint can indicate the start of a larger problem. Brick, stucco, and siding should be inspected as well. Examine flooring. Depending on the level of traffic, hardwood floors may need to be refinished every five to 10 years. If they get too worn down, you’re risking permanent damage to the wood. Check for leaks. And consider that in some older homes, cast iron was used for the wastewater lines. These pipes eventually fail. If the seepage is under the foundation, you’ll probably never notice, but it may be worth it to have

a professional plumber come check it out. If the leak gets bad enough, it can damage your foundation. Check foundation. The main cause of foundation problems, whether pier and beam or slab, is fluctuations in the moisture content of the soil. If the soil beneath a foundation swells uniformly or shrinks uniformly, it is unlikely to cause a problem. When only part of the foundation moves, though, you’re likely to see signs of damage. One of the best things about homeownership is that your investment typically appreciates over time. In order to support that appreciation, though, the home must be well maintained. It’s especially important to check these aspects of your home when going to market. When selling, you’ll likely have to do the work anyway or accept a lower price to compensate for the house’s condition.

Your Realtor will be able to give you objective advice about other aspects of your home that may need fixing or upgrading to make the sale. Don’t be afraid to ask for his or her help as you prepare to sell. For more tips about buying and owning real estate anywhere in the state of Texas, be sure to visit HAR.com. What Every Homeowner Should Know Before Making Renovations By d-mars.com News Provider

Y

our home is likely your most valuable asset, and you want to make sure you protect it with the right insurance. Did you know the cost to replace your home could be much more than it cost to build—and you could be on the hook for the difference? Whether it would cost more to replace because you’ve made major upgrades that increased the value of your home or simply because the price of building materials and labor has increased, you’ll need to come up with the additional funds or find ways to reduce costs. That’s why guaranteed replacement cost coverage, offered by insurers like Erie Insurance, is so important. If you

experience a total loss of your home, this coverage allows you to rebuild it back to its previous size and specifications at today’s cost, subject to certain conditions. To give you a better idea of the importance of insurance coverage that helps you protect the investments you make, consider the top three remodeling projects for the interior and exterior offering the best return on investment:

Interio Interio 1. Refinishing hardwood floors. The main reasons consumers are refinishing hardwood floors is to upgrade worn-out surfaces and to improve livability, according to the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report by the National Association of REALTORS Research Group. At 147%, it also tops the list for the number one interior project for what homeowners can recover on the cost of the project if they sell the home, based on estimates from NARI Remodelers and REALTORS. 2. Installing new wood flooring. The average cost recovered for this project is 118%. Surprisingly though, it was the number one feature homeowners surveyed by Erie Insurance said they got when they bought their home but wouldn’t choose again. When asked why, reasons ranged from feeling the feature was not worth the money, to being tired of it

5 Ways Your Family Can Avoid Security Risks During Your Summer Travels By d-mars.com News Provider

S

chool is out, and it's time to start looking forward to your family's summer travel plans. As you make your packing lists and research the sites and activities for your destinations, don't forget to review digital safety rules. According to the Better Business Bureau, between Memorial Day and Labor Day is the busiest time for domestic travel in the U.S., which coincides with an uptick in travel scams during the summer months. The bureau reports that from May to July 2021, consumers reported losing nearly $350,000 to travel scams, representing 33.5% of all money lost to travel scams last year. "The digital world is filled with sophisticated security threats," said Kelly Merryman, president and chief operating officer of Aura, an all-in-one intelligent digital safety platform for consumers. "When planning trips, think about how you can protect yourself online from these very real risks." As you prepare for your summer vacation, check out these five tips to avoid security risks and keep you and your family safe. 1. Use a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi Public Wi-Fi is great for staying connected on the go, but it also allows bad actors the opportunity to place malware on your device and access your identity and finances. Be proactive and use a virtual private network (VPN) when connecting to public Wi-Fi. If you don't have a VPN already, consider trying Aura's all-in-one digital security solution to protect you and your family online wherever you go. With just one tap

on the company's app, you can activate the VPN, which encrypts your internet traffic to protect your sensitive information on unsecured networks. 2. Store your important documents digitally While it might be reassuring to carry physical copies of your important documents like your passports and vaccine cards, you're leaving yourself and your kids vulnerable to identity theft. During vacation, it's easy to get distracted and leave your backpack or purse behind as you move on to your next adventure. Instead of carrying paper copies, store copies of your important documents online digitally in a secure app. Since you'll likely be accessing these documents on your phone, make sure your phone is locked with a complex password. 3. Don't overshare your vacation details on social media It's fun to share your fun moments and fond memories of your vacation with friends and family, but what you share on social media may make you vulnerable to cyberattacks and even physical ones. For example, sharing where you're planning to travel or announcing your location while on vacation creates opportunities for someone to find you or break into your home while you're away. Be mindful of what you share and teach your children to be selective about the information they put on social media at home and when they vacation.

4. Book travel on trusted websites There are plenty of travel scams on the internet. As you look for flights, rental cars and accommodations, do so through a legitimate, trusted site. Remember, you're entering sensitive information about your family's identities and financial information. An easy way to make sure the website you're shopping on is secure is to check the URL. If the link says "HTTPS" instead of "HTTP," you're good to go. The "S" in the URL means the site is secure, so you can feel confident that your information is safe. 5. Use your credit cards during travel When making purchases during your vacation, use your credit card instead of your debit card. Credit cards tend to offer more financial protection than debit cards, and if you spot a suspicious purchase on your recent transactions or latest statement, you'll likely be able to get your money back. To simplify your cybersecurity and maintain peace of mind while you travel, try Aura. With just one subscription, you and your family will have access to: * A secure VPN to protect you on public Wi-Fi * A smart network to help identify and flag scams like fraudulent travel websites * Financial transaction monitoring that watches for unusual activity * Identity theft protection in case you leave behind or have important documents stolen while traveling.

Is It Time to Break Up With Your Internet Service Provider? By d-mars.com News Provider

S

urprise fees, contracts, price hikes – it’s no wonder that broadband customers are the least satisfied customers in America according to the American Consumer Satisfaction Index. But having reliable and affordable internet access is no longer a luxury. Today, the home internet is essential for everyday activities, like connecting us to our classrooms, workplaces, healthcare providers, loved ones, and so much more. Here’s what to know about the biggest pain points broadband customers experience and a few tips for avoiding them.

Switching Switching According to industry leaders working to disrupt broadband, switching internet providers is often easier said than done. “Broadband customers are stuck and switching almost never happens. Internet providers rank dead last in customer satisfaction out of all industries year after year and people want to switch,” says Mike Sievert, CEO of T-Mobile. “Internet providers make switching such

a nightmare. You have to wait for your installation window, sometime between now and next February, drill holes in your walls, then spend the next week resetting all your connected devices. All that before you even know if it is going to work for you.” New services that offer a trial period without locking you into a long-term contract, as well as help cover the cost of terminating your current contract, can make things easier, says Sievert.

Pricing Pricing Internet providers a re notorious for luring customers in wit h low promotional prices, then jacking them up after the first or second year. On average, providers raise prices more than 30% after the promotional period ends. And that’s before all the fees -- fees for activation, equipment, installation, even self-installation. In 2020

alone, internet providers charged customers more than $9 billion just in monthly fees. At a time when prices for everything are going up, locking in your price for internet access can help you plan your long-term budget. Look for a modern contract that locks you in at an affordable price, and then read the fine print to ensure there are no hidden taxes or fees -- or future price hikes planned.

Cable Cable Millions of Americans are still stuck in a costly cable TV and internet bundle, where the price for one service skyrockets as soon as you drop the other. Companies like T-Mobile are helping customers cut the cord. With T-Mobile’s Internet Freedom, you can get great streaming deals, like $50 off any streaming device with Home Internet and any T-Mobile voice line, and 50% off YouTube TV for 12 months with Home Internet and Magenta MAX. YouTube TV is a good alternative to cable TV at a fraction of the cost. Plus, T-Mobile customers can get Netflix, Paramount+, and other streaming deals when they sign up. Internet Freedom will also cover any early termination fees up to $500.

BusinessInternet Internet Business The frustration doesn’t stop with residential internet customers. Most business owners know how messy, complex and costly staying connected can be. Many internet providers slap additional fees onto contracts just to label it “business internet.” Even worse, businesses with multiple locations are forced to navigate a patchwork of providers, all with different contracts, prices, policies, equipment, service level agreements, and customer care teams. With Internet Freedom from T-Mobile, businesses can get high-speed internet at affordable rates, with features like static IP addresses and content filtering, so businesses can be sure their connection is used only for business purposes. To learn more about Internet Freedom from T-Mobile or to see if broadband service is available at your address, visit www.t-mobile.com/isp. If you’re unsatisfied with your current internet provider, there’s no need to feel stuck. New services can help make the switch affordable and stress-free. Source: StatePoint
