t looks like award winning film director and multi-platinum Grammy nominated music producer Issac Yowman is using his platform highlighting the iconic musical venue, Club Matinee. Found in 1936, the popular performance center housed legends such as Ray Charles (one of his first gigs), James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Louis Armstrong, Sam Cooke, Little Richard, B. B. This project is a testament of when you do a project with love and purpose, it shines through. I’m really excited about the art exhibition I’m collaborating on with The MAG in Houston & partnering with such a prestigious HBCU such as Morehouse to curate a really dope experience.”
The short documentary features Archie Bell (Founding Member of the Billboard charting group Archie Bell & the Drells; Algenita Scott Davis Esq., Housing Program Manager, Center for Civic & Public Policy Improvement; Rev. Harvey
She went on to say, “At such a time as this, a deeply challenging time such as this, NCNW is so fortunate to have Shavon Arline-Bradley as our president and CEO; for she is a deeply admired and an effective leader in our on-going struggle for justice and equity.”
Arline-Bradley is scheduled to begin her new job in March.
“It is just very exciting, very exciting that a person under 50 is coming in to lead the organization, communicating to the public that NCNW is moving into the 21st century,” Daley added.
“NCNW is vital. NCNW is up to date. No one is cast aside. All will work together as a unit for justice the way Dr. Bethune and Dr. Height would have like to bring us together. The idea of leaving no one behind.”

Why Has FTX’s Fall Led to Renewed Mistrust in Cryptocurrencies?
By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior
The fall of Cryptocurrencies, the recent wave of the investment craze that includes NFTs and trading cards, has not only ruined bank accounts for some but now has the federal government investigating its dramatic downfall.
FTX, the Bahamas-based cryptocurrency exchange founded just before the pandemic paralyzed America and much of the world, landed in bankruptcy this month, leaving federal authorities perplexed over the fall of the $32 billion company.
Some have compared the fall of crypto to Bernie Madoff.
“And just as Madoff’s Ponzi scheme fell apart during the 2008 financial crisis, FTX’s collapse arrives amid a broader pullback for the tech industry,” Erin Griffith, a tech writer, penned for the New York Times’s digital newsletter.
“Tech stocks have crashed. Venture capital funding is drying up. As a result, nearly 800 tech companies have laid off more than 120,000 workers this year, with cuts hitting Meta, Amazon, and Twitter,” Griffith noted.
In a CBS News interview this week, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the fall of FTX should warn Americans
about investing their money in “extremely risky” financial products traded in a space lacking “appropriate supervision and regulation.”
“I think this is a space where investors and consumers should really be very careful,” Yellen stated.
“We have very strong investor and consumer protection laws for most of our financial markets, but in some ways, the crypto space has inadequate regulation.”
Yet, the crypto space has lured not just financial bigwigs but heavyweights in entertainment like Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Russell Simmons, and Ja Rule.
Along with friend and business partner Herb Rice, Ja Rule co-founded The Painted House and launched the NFT collection Black Is Beautiful, with a charitable component benefiting historically Black colleges and universities.
Earlier this year, Ja Rule told the Black Press that he wanted to create a space for people of color in the crypto world.
“That’s important. We need to be at that table,” Ja Rule said.
Simmons, the hip-hop architect, and successful businessman said he leaped into the NFT market because he wanted hip-hop pioneers to get their flowers and much-deserved money while still alive.
In collaboration with NFT marketplace Tokau, Simmons’ NFT honored individuals like D.J. Hollywood, Bizzy Bee Starski, and Grandmaster Caz.
Snoop Dogg agreed to curate the NFT collection.
“This is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and so many of the younger generation don’t know the shoulders on whom they stand,” Simmons told the Black Press at his launch party.
“Some of these guys [founders] don’t even have bank accounts, but we have to consider, all of us have to consider. None of us would be here without them.”
Simmons insisted that Snoop Dogg “gets it.”
“He wants to be a part of this. That’s why I love him so much,” Simmons asserted. “Snoop has such a big heart; he cares about these guys.”
In June, Jay-Z announced that he teamed with Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey to launch a new “Bitcoin Academy” for underserved residents – particularly those in Brooklyn, New York’s Marcy Houses.
The plan included adding other locations for the program designed in collaboration with Crypto Blockchain Plug and Black Bitcoin Billionaire.
Jay-Z and Dorsey said their mission included providing education and empowering the community with knowledge.
Program participants were promised MiFi devices, a one-year limited data plan, and smartphones if needed.
Each of the artists has yet to speak on the current state of crypto space.
This week, a new study found that the District of Columbia topped the list of American states and places that have demonstrated the most interest in NFTs and cryptocurrency.
The study found that Bitcoin sold for a record $68,000 in November 2021, while NFT sales peaked at $12.6 billion in January 2022.
Both have since dropped precipitously.
“Never in my career have I seen such a complete failure of corporate controls and such a complete absence of trustworthy financial information as occurred here,” John Ray III, the new CEO of FTX, told MSN as he laid out “a damning description of FTX’s operations under its founder Sam Bankman-Fried, from a lack of security controls to business funds being used to buy employees homes and luxuries.”
“From compromised systems integrity and faulty regulatory oversight abroad to the concentration of control in the hands of a very small group of inexperienced, unsophisticated, and potentially compromised individuals, this situation is unprecedented,” said Ray.
He performed cleanup work in the aftermath of the disastrous Enron scandal.
Griffin wrote in the New York Times newsletter that it would take time and multiple federal investigations to entirely understand what happened behind the scenes at FTX.
However, the impact is already evident.
“Lawmakers are calling for more oversight,” Griffin wrote.
“Crypto die-hards are trying to distance themselves. Critics of this sector of finance are crowing. And for those of you who had, until now, managed to ignore the rise and rise and rise of crypto as a phenomenon?
First of all, good for you. And second, you may want to watch this one play out.”

Gala Celebrates One Body Networking Founder & President Janice Weaver’s Ten-Year Milestone of Saving Lives with Community Blood Drives
By Linda K. Brown Advantage Communications Group, LLC
On Jan. 28, a star-studded event was held for One Body Networking Founder & President, Janice Weaver, who was honored for her commitment of saving lives for ten years. The gala event was held at the George R. Brown Convention Centers’ George Bush Ballroom, for “Ten Years of Saving Lives” through community blood drives. The event was attended by many Houstonians who showed their appreciation for her nonprofit organization’s level of commitment of community service. As a result of OBN’s fundraising efforts, they will be presenting a $2,500 “Mayor Sylvester Turner Scholarship” to a deserving college student soon.
Weaver was previously diagnosed with a rare blood disease, Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) in 2013 which unfortunately can be fatal or cause lasting damage, such as brain damage or a stroke, if not treated immediately. Janice spent 22 days in the ICU and received plasma to help save her life. She was fortunate to survive and once recovered, “she has remained committed to giving back and paying it forward”.
Her foundation, One Body Networking, continues to raise awareness to the community of how donating blood saves lives. For each person who donates blood, they save three lives. One Body Networking hosts community-based blood drives and awards scholarships to college students who exemplify community leadership. One Body Networking continued their efforts through the COVID-19 pandemic, saving over 1,500 lives.
Because of their efforts during the pandemic, the non-profit won the 2022 Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Small Heroes Award. They were also highlighted in the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s 2023 calendar. Janice is a dedicated community leader, Christian and humanitarian who is committed to helping others; she diligently serves as the Director of Community Relations for the City of Houston as part of Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Executive Staff. She is truly an active public servant throughout the greater Houston area and volunteers with numerous organizations throughout the community.
The same day as the gala, Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaimed “Janice Weaver Day” in the City of Houston.

$63 Million in School Grants Announced by Department of Education
By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior
The U.S. Department of Education announced $63 million in new five-year Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) grants to support 42 local educational agencies, non-profits, and other public or private organizations and institutions of higher education working to expand existing community schools or to establish new programs in eight new states and territories.
Those locations include Alabama, Alaska, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico.
Additionally, the District of Columbia Public Schools received a $492,000 capacity building and development grant.
The Department of Education said it is working to create new programs or expand existing community schools,
said in a news release.
DOE officials said that’s why the Biden-Harris Administration remains committed to supporting community school models across the country, which provide comprehensive support to the nation’s students, their families, and communities.
They said community schools meet the unique needs of the neighborhoods they serve by bringing services into school buildings through local non-profit, private sector, and agency partnerships.
This includes services such as high-quality tutoring,
EDUCATION & CAREER
health, mental health and nutrition services, and highquality early learning programs, among others, for students and the community.
“Community Schools are an essential component of accelerating our students’ learning and supporting their social, emotional, and mental health, and deepening community partnerships,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.
number of applications in the program’s history, which officials said showed how important it is to have a support system in place to address students’ social, emotional, and mental health needs.
The new grantees are committed to implementing the four pillars of community schools, including expanded and enriched learning time and opportunities, and integrated student supports that address out-of-school barriers to learning.
It also includes active family and community engagement, and collaborative leadership and practices.
The White House also released a new toolkit that shows how other government agencies, such as the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Transportation, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, can help.
The announcement comes while Cardona visited Turner Elementary School in Washington D.C., one of two District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) where FSCS funding will ensure a strong pipeline of services.
“At the height of the pandemic, community schools connected students and families with vital nutrition assistance, mental, physical, and other health services, and expanded learning opportunities,” Cardona added.
He continued:
“This work continues today because we know that students learn best when there is a comprehensive and holistic approach to meeting their needs. I am thrilled that through the historic investment we’re announcing now, the Department is funding the largest cohort of grantees in the history of this grant program. This represents a huge step toward the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of doubling the number of Full-Service Community Schools across the country and raising the bar for our support of children.”
This year’s grant competition received the largest
A Guide to Online Higher Education: Saving Money and Time with Affordable Options
By d-mars.com News Provider
Increasing tuition and mounting student debt is making a college degree more difficult to achieve. While policymakers are implementing debt forgiveness, nothing is addressing the root cause of the problem - traditional colleges and universities have built unsustainable cost models that can only be supported with ever increasing tuition. This leads to students believing they have no options, so they continue to willingly incur mountains of debt.
While some students choose to forgo college or dismiss the value of a graduate degree, many students are discovering a better way. One that doesn’t sacrifice the proven value of education to provide career-enhancing skills and advancement. Fully online institutions provide low-cost tuition models, largely due to lower operational costs, without sacrificing quality of education. Further, online higher education remains an affordable and attainable option for many students or working adults wanting to advance their career paths affordably.
High-cost education is often confused with quality, especially regarding four-year or advanced college degrees. But with historic levels of student debt combined with a significant shortage of skilled job applicants, isn’t it time to redefine how we measure the worth of a college degree? Online higher education institutions offer degrees that are significantly less expensive than traditional colleges or universities and offer substantial value and quality. A reflection of that value and quality is within graduation
rate statistics where the norm for institutions is around 46 to 64 percent, according to Education Data Initiative and the National Center for Education Statistics.
The New York Times’ The Daily podcast recently aired “The College Pricing Game,” that suggested federal student aid programs, which are covered under Title IV, unfortunately exacerbate the affordability of education. In fact, one could argue that these programs have caused the student debt crisis because they have made students and parents desensitized to cost. At the same time, these federal loan programs incentivize institutions to raise tuition year after year. Student loan forgiveness, which has been touted as a potential saving grace, is at most a temporary solution and doesn’t truly address the central issue: traditional colleges and universities are too expensive.
Tuition, fees and housing at many state-funded universities range from $10,000 to almost $30,000 a year, depending on whether students are in-state or outof-state. Including student loans and loss of income, the cost of a bachelor’s degree can exceed $400,000.
Affordable, accessible higher education solution
Fully online and non-traditional colleges and universities are filling that widening gap within the fractured education system, allowing students from all backgrounds and financial means to achieve success.
Leading online college American College of Education (ACE) breaks the link between the cost of tuition and the quality and accessibility of education. ACE’s funding is rooted in how much it costs to deliver a quality education
The administration said it would further demonstrate the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to providing a high-quality education for all students.
DCPS is one of the 42 local educational agencies, nonprofits, or other public or private entities and institutions of higher education to receive this funding.
The Department conducted robust outreach to expand interest, and almost half of grantees in this cohort are first-time grantees, DOE officials stated.
“Notably, this cohort includes the first set of grantees in the history of the program that have expressed a commitment to scaling the community school model across the grantee’s state. With this award, the Department has awarded FSCS grants in 20 states and territories.”

rather than the maximum amount of government loans accruable through Title IV.
Global insights from HolonIQ Smart Estimates are projecting online education to grow by more than 12 percent annually through 2025. While it’s easy to directly correlate this growth with the COVID-19 pandemic, online (not remote) education has been growing for years, and there is a larger shift that needs to be recognized and addressed. Higher education should be accessible rather than exclusive and online colleges are pioneering the use of technology to increase academic quality and reduce cost. Without significant real estate and overhead expenses, these universities offer high-quality education programs, from micro-credentials to doctoral degrees, at a fraction of the cost of traditional colleges and universities. With affordable programs, fully online universities offer graduates the ability to cover the cost of their degrees within the first year or two of graduating.
“ACE has an unwavering commitment to putting students first, and this involves intentional attention to their concerns from cost to quality to flexibility,” said Geordie Hyland, ACE President and CEO. “Our low cost doesn’t require sacrificing quality, and we want to be a solution to the student-debt crisis and not a contributor. At the end of the day, many of our students graduate with minimal or no debt while earning a quality education that enhances their career development and contributions to society. We hope our efforts can inspire other institutions to do the same.”

What Every Newlywed Should Know About Finances
By d-mars.com News Provider
February is the month of love and one of the most popular times of year for couples to get engaged. According to a recent study, 36% of respondents said Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day to propose. If you’re about to get married or just walked down the aisle, here are five things to do to ensure your financial health.
1. Determine how you will handle finances. They say money can’t buy love and happiness, but talking about it in a marriage, or even beforehand, goes a long way. You’ll want to discuss whether you’ll have a joint bank account and credit cards, separate accounts, or a combination of the two. It’s a personal decision, so consider the pros and cons. It’s also a good idea to know the roles you will play. For example, will you or your partner pay the day-to-day bills? The other person may want to manage the monthly mortgage and auto expenses, or even the long-term investments and retirement funds. If you need help coming up with a plan, you may want to seek the advice of a financial counselor.
2. Get life insurance. You may not realize that February is also Insure Your Love Month, a time to think about protecting your loved ones if something unfortunate should happen. “If you have people who depend on you – including your new spouse – chances are you
need life insurance,” said Lou Colaizzo, senior vice president, Erie Family Life. “While it’s hard to think about the possibility of not being there for a loved one, it’s so important to plan for.” Colaizzo added that some people may hesitate to seek out life insurance because they don’t want to go through the trouble of getting a medical exam, but that’s not always necessary. For example, Erie Insurance has a policy called ERIExpress Life, which may be able to provide protection with a simple application process and no physical medical exam. Colaizzo recommends people consult with their insurance agent to find the right life insurance policy and coverage amount that’s best for them.
3. Protect your bling. Chances are you spent a lot of time and money picking out rings you’ll love and wear every day. Unfortunately, burglaries are more common than you may think. According to the FBI, there were more than 1.1 million burglaries in 2019. Protect your wedding jewelry, and any other expensive jewelry, by adding these items to your homeowners or renters policy. It is advisable to have photos and
Tax Season Tips: 3 Strategies to Streamline Tax Documentation
By d-mars.com News Provider
Taxes can be a daunting task. Some people are so anxious that they put it off until just before the April 15 deadline. According to a survey by IPX1031, 32% of Americans waited until the last minute to file taxes in 2022. Of those who procrastinated on filing, 25% said that they waited because filing taxes is too stressful and complicated.
While you can wait until the deadline to file, you’ll only increase your tax anxiety. If you find tax season intimidating, check out these three tips that can help ease tax time stress.
1. Take a Deep Breath
It may seem trite, but the first thing you need to do to tackle your taxes is to take a deep breath. You likely already have everything you need to start your tax forms. It’s just a matter of finding all your documents and organizing them so you can easily fill out your information and submit your forms.
Start early to help ease your tax season stress, so you have plenty of time to input and review your information. If you wait until the deadline, you’ll only get more anxious about the prospect of being late or making mistakes on your tax forms.
Another way to manage tax time stress is to tackle your tax forms one section at a time. You can do this over the course of a few days or a couple of weeks. You can enlist the help of a partner or friend to keep you accountable and sit with you while you do your taxes.
2. Get Organized
Whether you’re doing personal or business taxes, creating a system with specific categories will help you stay organized throughout the year. That way, when it’s time to tackle taxes, you’ll have everything you need right in front of you.
First, create a deductions and expenses folder. In this folder, you’ll keep cellphone and internet bills, receipts for supplies (like pencils, pens and papers), client dinner receipts and documents of charitable donations.
Next, you’ll set up an income folder where you’ll store your paystubs, bank statements and other records that prove any income you have produced during the year. If needed, you can create another folder for business tax documents like W-2s, property taxes and selfemployment forms.
Lastly, make an investments folder. Here, you can save retirement contributions to IRAs or other accounts, tax-deferred investments, nondeductible investments and any other taxable investments.
By setting up and using this organizational system throughout the year, you’ll be able to breeze through your tax forms with minimal stress.
3. Go Digital
Now that you’ve got the system in place, it’s time to simplify taxes by going digital. Recreate the organizational system above on your computer. You can also store or sync the folders on the cloud or mobile device so you can access documents on the go. You can also upload invoices, receipts and other documents into digital files as soon as you receive them.
The easiest way to convert physical documents into
documentation of the value of the ring and other valuable jewelry in the event of a theft or a loss.
4. Update your car insurance. Notify your agent to make sure you’re both covered to drive each other’s cars. You may also be eligible for savings, such as a multi-car discount or bundling your car insurance with homeowners and/or life insurance. Additionally, some insurance companies offer a lower rate for married couples.
5. Make updates to your records if you change your last name. It’s a big decision and takes a lot of work if one of you decides to change your name after marriage. It’s important to be patient and diligent as the entire process may take several months. Remember to update all the appropriate forms, including a new Social Security card, driver’s license, passport, bank accounts and credit cards, among other considerations. Additionally, notify your employer for payroll and health insurance coverage updates.
Getting married is an exciting, big life event. While you and your partner start your new life together, have an open conversation about financial considerations and double check to make sure you’re covered to protect the life you’re building.

digital ones is to scan them. Simplify the process by using an application like Mopria Scan. This app allows you to scan directly from any Mopria certified device to your Android device without installing multiple apps, software or drivers for every scanner or printer you use at home or the office.
You’ll also have easy access to scanned pages on your Android device’s cloud storage or other applications. You can even scan your stuff and email it to your professional accountant so they can deal with it! Download the Mopria Print Service or Mopria Scan apps and relieve tax time stress.
Don’t let tax season anxiety get you down. Using these three tips, you’ll be able to complete your tax forms quickly and set yourself up for success for the next tax season.

MyFitnessPal Urges Everyone to Eat Less Sugar for Heart Health Month
By d-mars.com News Provider
MThe globe’s number 1 food tracking and nutrition app is shining a light on sugar consumption and uncovering hidden sugars in foods across the world yFitnessPal, the comprehensive nutrition, and fitness tracking app, is encouraging people to dial back the sweets and pump-up heart health as they launch the Less Sweet, More Heart campaign for February’s Heart Health Month. In four of the top five sugar-logging countries - Australia, Canada, U.K., and U.S. - MyFitnessPal is commemorating the global focus on heart health with giant heart-shaped sugar structures in major cities including Sydney, Toronto, London and Miami. Knowing that more than 50% of people surveyed worldwide said they want to decrease their sugar consumption, MyFitnessPal is also sharing low sugar recipes, meal ideas and simple sugar swaps available now on the free app.
“Even those of us who don’t think we have a sweet tooth would be surprised by how much sugar we’re consuming. A lot of the foods we enjoy every day have a surprising amount of hidden sugar,” explains Tricia Han, CEO of MyFitnessPal. “Tracking is a great way to gain a better understanding of just how much sugar is in the foods you’re eating, and we’re sharing some simple swaps and ideas that can help keep that amount in the healthy recommended range.”
According to the American Heart Association, an average American adult consumes 77 grams of sugar per day, which is nearly three times more than the recommended amount. Much of that comes from
food that contains hidden sugar, including those foods regularly touted as “healthy” such as flavored yogurts and oatmeals. To add to the confusion, there are an estimated 50 different names for sugar and sweeteners that can be found on nutrition labels. To take the guesswork out of the equation, tracking food with the free MyFitnessPal app will accurately provide a quick snapshot of daily sugar intake along with longer-term trends.

Swap flavored yogurt for plain Greek yogurt topped with one teaspoon honey and fresh fruit. Not only did sugar decreased but fiber and protein increased. If eaten daily, this swap can potentially save 14,600 calories, or four pounds, in a year.
Opt for plain rolled or steel oats over flavored oatmeal. Jazz up this breakfast staple with spices like cinnamon and fresh fruits like chopped apples. If eaten daily, this swap can potentially save 16,060 calories, or four-anda-half pounds, in a year.
Small snacks can contain a lot of added sugar. Some snack bars contain up to 14 grams of added sugar, which is the equivalent of 3.5 sugar cubes. Try replacing this on-the-go fuel with brands that tout no added sugar. This swap can potentially save up to 20,440 calories, or six pounds, in a year.

Staying on the Fence of Your Fitness Goals Five Tactics for Success
By d-mars.com News Provider
Whether you’re hitting the gym to get healthy, tone up or improve your overall well-being, seeing results can be one of the most satisfying feelings. Noticing even the smallest change in the way you feel, or look is reason enough to lace up your sneakers for another sweat session.
When results seem to plateau or schedules get busy, don’t give up! Keep the momentum going. We came up with our tips for maximizing your needs while renewing your mind to keep at it: below tips in mind to help maximize your
1) A Gym Partner
Instead of flying solo, bring a friend so you can encourage each other during your workouts. Exercising with a buddy can breed healthy competition, but also hold you accountable. To help maximize the impact, try to pick a partner that is on the same fitness level as you and shares similar goals - you will want to be able to increase your intensity level and challenge each other as a team.
2) Fuel up
An active lifestyle requires proper nutrition. When regularly exercising, your body needs fuel for optimal performance and proper recovery. Before a
workout, opt for healthy and easily digestible carbohydrates like brown rice, quinoa, whole grain bread and pasta (a cup not a whole pan), fruits and vegetables to give you energy. Afterward, try a protein-packed snack like Emergen-C Protein Fuel and Superfoods. With 15 grams of organic plant-based protein and two full servings of 14 superfoods, the protein and superfood powder blend can help you make the most of your active time by providing the wholesome nourishment you need, along with supporting your natural defenses with a high potency serving of vitamin C.
3) Head to the weights
If your fitness goals include improving body composition and losing weight, you may want to introduce strength training into your regimen. While exercises such as walking, running, and cycling can do wonders for your cardiovascular health and help burn calories, strength
training with weights can elevate your metabolism for a longer period - meaning your body will continue burning calories even after a workout. Plus, strength training can target and tone hard-to-reach muscles, improve balance and help protect your bones.
4)
Switch it up
After a while, bodies can grow accustomed to the same exercise routine, often leading to stalled results. If you find yourself breezing through a workout, it’s time to switch it up and push your limits. Varying your exercises can challenge your mind and body, help burn more calories and prevent boredom. If you like to run long distances, try implementing sprint intervals. At the gym? Try out new equipment or vary your reps. Challenge your body and you may be surprised by the results.
5) Take a break
The last way to maximize your fitness routine has nothing to do with the gym at all.
In fact, it requires you to skip the gym. Exercise provides many health benefits, but too many high-intensity workouts can backfire, potentially causing injury from overuse and hindering your results. Allow your body enough time to heal before hitting the gym again and try to work active rest days into your schedule, such as going for a light walk or bike ride. Keeping these tips in mind can help you make the most of your fitness routine and magnify your efforts in the gym, on the track, in the pool or wherever you choose to exercise. Above all, don’t hesitate to ask fellow gym-goers for help or to make modifications when something feels off.

Joe Dixon - Personal Trainer
By Emil Flemmon Associate Editor
The phrase “Dad Bod” refers to an average guy who doesn’t have a lean, shredded physique. He might instead have a paunch or visible beer belly, without being hugely overweight—just like the stereotypical suburban father of a nuclear family. It evokes a relatable, warm kind of dude who kicks back with a beer and pizza after his kids have gone to bed. However, the “dad bod” is not exclusive to just fathers.
d-mars.com spoke exclusively with online trainer and father of one, Joe Dixon, on being more conscious about the upkeep of men’s bodies.
Q&A With Joe Dixon
D-MARS: Tell us about your background leading to fitness.
JD: I attended Missouri Valley State where I was a member of the football team on a scholarship. I was a 2-year start at cornerback but transferred to South Eastern University to be closer to home cause I had a baby on the way. After my days at South Eastern, I tried out for the Vodoo in-league team. I made the final cut but never followed up with the game film. I always had a passion for fitness due to my background in sports. Got my certification for personal training in 2010 and my nutrition certification in 2014. I drove trucks up until 2011 and realized it wasn’t for me, so I had to go all in with what I could see myself doing for the rest of my life outside of football and that was helping people with their fitness goals.
D-MARS: What does “Dad Bod” mean to you?
JD: The “Dad Bod” can be a result of poor choices such as ordering out instead of cooking, happy hour instead of heading home, and watching a game instead of being active in the activity. As a father, why did you choose to transform your body to what a lot of men entering their 30s dread? When you have a child it will give you a different perspective on life, so for me, it was about longevity. Being around to see my daughter grow older, get married and have grandkids, plus looking good is a plus.
D-MARS: What did you discover for yourself to provide better for your clients?
JD: I love to be challenged it brings the best out in me, so I use the same method to get the best out of my clients.
D-MARS: How long did it take you to get back to a size you were comfortable with?
JD: With proper training and nutrition, I achieve my goal in 3 months.
D-MARS: How did it feel seeing your body in the shape that it was?
JD: It was a real confidence booster. The anatomy of the body is amazing, seeing your body change rapidly is indescribable.
D-MARS: What did you do to get the shape you were in?
JD: Weight training, cardio, and dieting.
D-MARS: What do you attribute to dad’s body not being what it used to be?
Tips to Beat Complacent with

Beat Becoming with the Dad Bod
JD: The world is evolving and becoming more health conscious. Healthy lifestyles are posted all over media outlets with social media playing a big part in influencing people to want to change their appearance.
D-MARS: We hear all the time about calorie deficits. What’s one thing that’s useful to help dads start their morning without counting calories?
JD: I tell people all the time you don’t have to count calories to achieve your fitness goal. Make sure you drink a half gallon of water per day and eat 3-4 healthy meals. Build your meals around protein and focus on whole foods. Try to be accurate with portion size by eating in small portions.
D-MARS: What do you define as the balance between being a father and trying to work out regularly?
JD: Prioritizing your time is key to finding balance. Schedule your workouts around your fatherly duties.
D-MARS: Diet tips! As a trainer, you work with people on diets for a fee. However, what are some small steps that can be taken to get away from the table?
JD: Getting up and being active is the first step to getting people away from the table. Drinking more water and adding more protein to your diet increases the feeling of fullness. Eating mindfully and slowly will also help with cravings.
D-MARS: If consistent, what’s a good time frame to look for a change in the body?
JD: In two months with proper nutrition, and structure training, you can see great results.
D-MARS: What message do you want fathers like yourself to understand about the change in body and metabolism?
JD: It’s never to let to get in shape, but our metabolism slows down and we don’t recover as fast as when we were in our twenties, so we will have to train smarter and give our bodies more self-care and rest to achieve our overall goal.
D-MARS: We know women have a higher percentage of joining gyms quicker than men. What do you think are motivating factors to get men in the gym?
JD: Health issues and women will always be the main factors in getting men to work out.
D-MARS: What do you find more effective – investing in trainers or getting up the courage to get a gym membership and do it yourself?
JD: Not everyone wants to spend money on trainers. The money most people waste on gym memberships trying to figure out how to train could be spent on hiring a trainer. A trainer will provide a plan for you to follow and teach you how to properly train and eat correctly.
D-MARS: Men sometimes have egos. How do you persuade guys to get a trainer as opposed to them thinking they can do it themselves?
JD: The best way to persuade anyone is to show them your work. I learned over the years nothing can beat results.
Cardio is still something a lot of people dislike. What are some ways to make it interesting, especially for men who may not be as athletic?
When I want my clients to burn more calories, I pick up the tempo of the workout. I would lower the weight, shorten the rest time, and increase the rep range.
D-MARS: Men are notoriously using protein shakes which can be like a placebo effect. What’s your take on properly adding protein shakes to one’s diet?
JD: A protein shake is an added plus to help people hit their protein intake for the day. Most of your protein should come from your foods. Protein shakes shouldn’t be taken any more than 1-2 per day.
Part of your job is to be a nutritionist. What are some things you’d want men to eliminate or minimize in their diets? Eliminate processed foods and cut back on sugar and alcohol.

The Road to Recovery: Unlocking the Best Treatment Options for Lung Cancer
By d-mars.com News Provider
While November is Lung Cancer Awareness month, it never hurts to be aware of the options upon learning the news. Knowledge alone can help anyone among your family, circle of friends, associates, etc.
You’re an avid runner and cyclist. You eat well and don’t smoke. Overall, you’re doing all the right things when it comes to your health. Then you get diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. You know you’re not invincible, but lung cancer didn’t even seem like a possibility.
This scenario reflects Kirk Smith’s reality. In December 2013, he went out for a three-mile run from his office. As someone who races marathons and triathlons, this was supposed to be a breeze. He didn’t make it a mile before a sharp pain in the left side of his chest and very shallow breathing stopped him and forced him to walk back.
He decided to drive to the ER and was held overnight for a series of scans. Later that same month, he was diagnosed with stage IIIB lung cancer at 51 years old, meaning his cancer had spread into the lymph nodes of his chest,
targeted therapy that allowed him to race in a half-marathon less than two months after beginning treatment.
However, just like many people’s experiences treating lung cancer, Kirk has had to constantly monitor his condition and adjust. His treatments changed, for example, when his liver enzymes reached dangerous levels. Later, when tests revealed the cancer had spread to his brain - known as brain metastases - he switched treatments again.
“I have a brilliant health care team and I’ve made it a point that they get to know me as a person as well as a patient,” said Kirk. “Find a doctor who you believe in that also believes in you.”
Before making any treatment decisions, such as moving to a different targeted therapy, Kirk’s oncologist ordered CGP to understand how his cancer had changed. Since 2017, he has benefitted from Guardant Health’s Guardant360® blood tests for CGP, which have provided actionable insights and allowed him to get access to newly approved targeted therapies,
“Biomarker testing has been the difference between life and death for me and has allowed me to maintain my quality of life. It’s like a map that guides my treatment at every stage. Everyone who has been diagnosed with late-stage cancer should ask their doctors about these tests,” Smith says.
Kirk doesn’t smoke, which is one of the reasons he was so shocked, but he quickly learned that this is a big misconception about the disease.
“If you have lungs, you can get lung cancer. Smoking is a risk factor, but there are many people with lung cancer who are nonsmokers,” said Kirk. “There is a terrible stigma around lung cancer that it’s the person’s fault. This is likely why lung cancer gets the least funding of all the major cancers, even though it kills the most people.”
A map to lung cancer treatments
Kirk decided to take an optimistic and pragmatic approach to treating his lung cancer, understanding that at this stage, it is unlikely to be cured. His treatment journey mirrors the giant leaps happening in lung cancer research and care over the last 10 years.
Kirk’s care team understood the importance of comprehensive genomic profiling (CGP), or biomarker testing, and made sure to test him for actionable biomarkers at the start of his treatment journey. When he was positive for the ALK alteration, he started out on a
Kirk’s life today
It has been 9 years since Kirk received his late-stage cancer diagnosis. He is a passionate supporter of cancer research and currently serves as the president of the patient advocacy group ALK Positive. He believes that being able to continue his active lifestyle and preserve his quality of life is a testament to the advancements and progress made in lung cancer research.
“Through breakthroughs in research, targeted therapies and biomarker testing, I believe this disease can no longer be a death sentence and instead be a manageable disease,” he said.
Old Folks Saying... Did You Know...
Do You Have McDonald’s Money?
Ahhh, nothing like being with your parent(s) during a car ride and realizing ¬– you’re hungry. You might have the munchies too but perhaps that appetite is based on something else. No less, you’re aware that there is food already at the house, or something you can make. However, you don’t desire either of those options. Instead, you ask your parent(s), “Can I get something to eat?” Your mom might respond with “We got food at the house?” You come right back with, “Can we get some McDonalds?” Finally, it happens. Those five words, “Do you have McDonald’s money?” hits you like a ton of bricks as you feel shut down from the satisfaction of fast food. Now, it can go two ways. Your parent(s) might cave in because they didn’t want to be at the house either; you just gave them a reason to join you. Or they stick to their guns and stand on that firm “no” as their decision. Once your’re home, that left over spaghetti becomes your homie, lover, and friend.
In 1905. Georgia native Robert Sengstacke Abbott founded, edited, and published the Chicago Defender, for decades the country’s dominant African American newspaper. Through the pages of the Defender, Abbott exercised enormous influence on the rise of the Black community in Chicago, Illinois, and on national African American culture.
The paper started out with a 25cent investment and a four-page pamphlet, increasing circulation with every edition. The Defender played an important role in encouraging African Americans to migrate from the south for better economic opportunities. The success of the paper made Abbott one of the first African American self-made millionaires.
His foundation helped to give birth to numerous publications including Jet, Ebony, Black Enterprise, Right On!, Essence and more.

ou’ve selected your insurance plan for the year. Now, it’s time to start using your benefits, beginning with an annual wellness exam.
An annual wellness exam with a health care provider is important for everyone, but especially for older adults. As we age, we are more likely to develop chronic health conditions, according to Dr. J.B. Sobel, chief medical officer for Cigna Medicare, which serves hundreds of thousands of older adults through its products. An annual wellness exam can help detect potential health issues early so they can be addressed before they worsen, he added
“By meeting with your primary care provider early in the year, you can highlight the things that are important to you, and work together to develop a plan for your care for the year ahead,” Sobel said. “This will ensure you live each day with vitality, happiness and improved health.”
Many providers will reach out to schedule an annual wellness exam. If your provider doesn’t contact you, make sure to call them.
A number of annual check-ups are available at no extra cost to those with Medicare. They include a “Welcome to Medicare” visit for customers who have just reached Medicare eligibility and an “Annual Wellness Exam” for existing customers. Many Medicare Advantage (MA) plans offer more extensive annual visits at no extra cost. Some even offer incentives for completing a visit. Talk with your provider and Medicare insurer about your benefits.
Each annual exam may be a little different. Regardless of the type, Sobel offers the following tips to ensure you get the most from your visit.Prepare. Before you go, write down anything you’d like to discuss with your health care provider, including changes to your health over the past year. Bring your prescription and over-the-counter medications with you. Ask plenty of questions and take notes. You might even want to take along a family member, trusted friend or caregiver to ensure you understand
Annual Wellness Exam Is the Key to a Healthy and Active Life for Elderly Adults
everything your provider has shared.
Be open and honest. It’s tempting to make things look rosier than they are when talking to your health care provider but minimizing what you are feeling can lead to an incorrect diagnosis or prescription. Speak openly about unhealthy habits, like smoking or lack of exercise. Your provider won’t judge you. Being honest is the only way your health care provider can help you reach your goals.
Mind mental health. Your emotional health impacts your physical health. Many people think depression is a natural part of aging, but it doesn’t have to be. Talk to your doctor if you are feeling sad, anxious or hopeless. Treatments, such as talk therapy, medication, or both, may be covered by Medicare.
Monitor medications. Adults aged 65 and older tend to take more medications than other age groups, increasing the risk for adverse reactions, such as cognitive impairment and falls. It’s a good idea to take your medications to your annual wellness exam and discuss any potential problems or side effects you’re experiencing. Don’t forget about over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or nutritional supplements you take.
Schedule screenings and get vaccines. There are a number of important health screenings and vaccines that you may need depending on your age and gender, such as colon cancer screening, bone density test, mammogram, flu shot or COVID-19 immunization. Ask your provider about the screenings and vaccines you’ve had already and schedule any you need as soon as possible. You may even be able to do that before you leave the office. Also, don’t forget to visit your eye doctor and dentist. These visits are covered by many MA plans as well. Find out more at www.cignamedicare.com.

Janice Weaver Years of Saving Lives, 10
By Emil Flemmon Associate Editor
One Body Networking(OBN) Founder & President, Janice Weaver, has been committed to saving lives for 10 years through community blood drives. Recently, a fundraising event honoring, “Ten Years of Saving Lives,” saw many Houstonians show their appreciation for her non-profit organization.
The company raised $2,500 for the “Mayor Sylvester Turner Scholarship” to be awarded to a deserving college student. Weaver was previously diagnosed with a rare blood disease, Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) in 2013 which unfortunately can be fatal or cause lasting damage. When not treated immediately, health concerns such as brain damage and strokes are a risk.
Weaver spent 22 days in the ICU and received several hundred units of plasma to help save her life. She was fortunate to survive and following her recovery, “she has remained dedicated to giving back and paying it forward.”
OBN continues to raise awareness in the community of how donating blood is an invaluable service. For every donator, three lives are given another opportunity
in life. The foundation is built on community involvement for blood drives and scholarships for college students exemplifying community leadership. Their efforts, even during COVID-19, have aided in the quality life span for over 1,500 recipients.
The founder’s consistency in community education and pandemic relief led to recognition. In 2022, the non-profit won the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Small Heroes Award. In addition, OBN was highlighted in the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s 2023 calendar.
Weaver cites herself as dedicated community leader, a Christian and humanitarian paving roads to helping others. She diligently serves as the Director of Community Relations for the City of Houston as part of Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Executive Staff. Her volunteer efforts throughout the metro area with numerous organizations has made her a true public servant.
On Jan. 28, Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaimed “Janice Weaver Day” honoring her philanthropic and entrepreneurial spirit.

Weaver 10 Years of Hearts Beating
Q&A with Janice Weaver
DMARS: What inspired the creation of One Body Networking?
JW: I was amazed that the hospital was able to provide the plasma needed and not ask the family to donate blood. Opportunity to pay it forward.
DMARS: When you were diagnosed, what do you remember feeling in terms of the longevity of your life?
JW: Being diagnosed with the rare blood disease and being told that my life expectancy being unsure if I would survive was scary.
DMARS: What are the benefits for those who do donate?
JW: Providing adequacy for patients. It can make a difference. Regular blood donating leads to a healthier heart and vascular system. It’s also linked to lower blood pressure and a lower risk for heart attacks.
DMARS: There are people who donate blood just to get money to supplement their lives. How do we debunk that myth to keep awareness of blood donation?
JW: Telling the story to somebody like me and others shows that there is a reality that individuals who donate can really save lives.
DMARS: Describe how the Our Body Networking and community scholarships go hand-and-hand?
JW: To ensure satisfaction for the supply and demand. This supply for patients to help make the difference we need. Someone benefits from it either way and for that, we can’t complain about the work done. We got a lot of great feedback for our event on Jan. 28 kicking off our 10-year anniversary. The funds we received did a lot of good and we’re proud of that. It brought awareness not just for those informed but was a segway for those who needed an introduction to the cause.
DMARS: How do we motivate people, especially color, to give blood?
JW: Again, sharing the stories of individual that we know.
DMARS: Your humanitarian efforts have given justice so many in need. If you were led to a different path, or choice, what would it be?

Who Needs Cream of Chicken When You Can Make Your Own
Gravy Over Smothered Chicken
By d-mars.com News Provider
In honor of Black History Month, we decided to bring you a recipe for some good ole Smothered chicken – a staple in Southern soul food cuisine. Some may call it smothered chicken while others opt for chicken smothered with gravy. Whatever the case may be, it’s a good food memory to have in Black households, especially in the south. Its popularity is rooted in family gatherings, Sunday dinners, holidays, the whole nine. Smothered chicken is also known as stovetop chicken, smothered fried chicken, or Sunday chicken. That’s because the chicken is skillet fried or air fried first. It’s also what? BUDGET FRIENDLY!
The finger-licking food’s recipe is made with chicken broth, chicken bouillon, heavy whipping cream, onion, garlic, paprika, and red pepper. Even if you’re not a heavy cook, most of these items aren’t uncommon in one’s household. However, a trip to the local store will have you calling yourself a home chef.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
• Ingredients for the air fryer smothered Southern fried chicken
• 6 pieces of chicken (I used boneless chicken thighs)
• 2 tablespoons of Famous Dave’s Country Roast Chicken Seasoning (or similar)
• 2 teaspoons of Weber Seasoning, Roasted Garlic & Herb(or similar)
• 2 cups of all-purpose flour, divided
• 1 ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
• 1 ½ teaspoon of onion powder
• 1 ½ teaspoon of paprika
• ¾ teaspoon of red pepper
• 1 egg
• Peanut oil or vegetable oil cooking spray (for brushing or spraying on the chicken)
• ½ cup of buttermilk (½ cup of buttermilk = ½ cup of milk & ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar)
• Buttermilk for this recipe should be ½ cup of buttermilk = ½ cup of milk + ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Stir and let it sit for 5 minutes.
Now, if you’re trying to cut back with oil usage and make use of your air fryer then use these instructions:
• Combine the chicken seasoning and the garlic & herb seasoning in a small bowl.
• Then rub the seasoning mixture onto the chicken pieces, and set the chicken aside.
• Place 1 cup of the divided flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and red pepper in a medium-size mixing bowl or 1-gallon resealable food storage bag.
• Shake (or mix) the sealed bag to combine the ingredients for a homemade floured poultry seasoning, and set the flour mixture aside.
• Pour the second cup of flour into a second resealable bag (or medium-sized mixing bowl) and set it aside.
• In another medium-sized bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg, and set that mixture aside too.
• The chicken will go through a 3-step process from here.
• First, place the chicken in the bag (or bowl) of seasoned flour and shake or toss to coat the chicken evenly.
• Second, shake off the excess flour and dip the chicken into the buttermilk mixture.
• Third, transfer the chicken to the last bag (or bowl) of flour and shake or toss until it’s very well coated.
• Remove the chicken pieces from the bag (or bowl) and lightly brush or spray the chicken with peanut oil or vegetable oil.
• If using an air fryer with a basket, spray the basket with peanut oil or vegetable oil.
• Place the chicken into the air fryer, making sure it’s skin-side up. It’s okay if the chicken pieces touch; don’t overcrowd them.
• Air fry at 360 degrees for a total of 20 minutes.
• Halfway through, after about 10 minutes have passed, flip the chicken over in the air fryer and return to cooking.
• Air fry at 360 degrees for the remaining 10 minutes or until the chicken is goldenbrown and crisp all over.
• Keep the chicken in the air fryer on the ‘warm’ setting until the smothered chicken gravy is ready.
As for the soul food tasting chicken gravy:
• 1 cup of chicken broth
• 1 ½ cups of chicken gravy (or one 12 oz. jar)
• ¼ cup of heavy whipping cream
• 4 tablespoons of flour
• 2 teaspoons of chicken bouillon
• ½ teaspoon of salt
• ¼ teaspoon of black pepper
• Optional – chopped parsley or green onion to garnish
• Add all the ingredients: chicken broth, chicken gravy, whipping cream, flour, chicken bouillon, salt, and pepper in a large pot on low.
• Whisk the ingredients to combine until the gravy mixture is lump-free and the bouillon dissolves.
• Allow the mixture to heat for 3-5 minutes before it’s ready to serve with the chicken. You can serve the chicken and gravy separate or combine both in a serving bowl. Either way, your taste buds will thank you. Enjoy!
