REIGNITING INTEREST SUPPORTING SMALL BLACK BUSINESSES
By d-mars.com News Provider
hat you may not know is that a lot of Black business owners frequently face exorbitant interest rates and difficulty obtaining bank loans, even with excellent personal credit. As a result, Black entrepreneurs lack the required start-up capital, causing them to accrue higher debt-to-revenue ratios and ultimately fail to sustain their companies. In the Houston area, there are 3,981 Black businesses, accounting for 4% of employer businesses. If Black businesses accounted for 18.5% of employer firms (equivalent to the Black population), there would be 21,225 more Black businesses, per a study Brookings. Edu. So, a question to ask ¬– Do you support small Black businesses and if not, why? Whether it’s a local eatery, service provider, retail store or another type of business, when you shop small, you’re supporting a real person who is striving to keep his or her entrepreneurial dream alive. “Small businesses are the heart of our country and Ball home canning products business,” says Kris Malkoski, CEO of the Food Business Unit at Newell Brands.
W
We have been moved by the love our small business customers have shown their communities this past year. Still many small businesses are facing hardships and they need our support now more than ever. You can personally help make a difference by considering 10 simple ways to support small businesses: SHOP NOW No need to wait for a sale or special event. By shopping now you’re putting much-needed funds
into a small business that depends on income each month to make ends meet and keep doors open. Reverse shopping: Rather than thinking of the recipient and then where to shop for a gift, think of the shop first and then the recipients that would most like items from that business. GO ONLINE For small businesses that offer e-commerce options, be sure to consider online orders that ship directly to your home. This is a safe and convenient way to support your favorite businesses. Shop in person: For businesses with physical locations, visit shops in person if you can use proper safety measures. If you know what you want, many businesses let you order ahead and opt for curbside or doorway pickup as well. CONSIDER GIFT CARDS Not sure what to buy? Gift cards are always one of the most desired gifts, so if you need to send a little love to a loved one, wrap up a gift certificate in a beautiful card and feel good about your present choice. LEAVE REVIEWS Online reviews can make a big difference for small businesses in expanding clientele. Go online and leave rave reviews for your favorite stores and why others should support them as well to help spread the word. BE VOCAL In addition to online reviews, talk up your favorite small businesses among friends. From independent restaurants to local service providers, use your voice as a powerful tool to build their reputation and support growth. PARTNERSHIPS Look for small businesses who partner together to offer products or services that complement each other in packages, such as a gift basket bundle featuring your favorite local treats. You’ll support multiple businesses at once and often get a discount compared to buying separately.
DOUBLE UP For businesses like independent coffee shops or bakeries, consider a larger order. For example, go with that grande latte and order two dozen cookies to share with your neighbors. BE PATIENT Small businesses are dealing with a multitude of challenges these days, from supply chain holdups to sluggish shipping and beyond. Your kindness is valued, and your patience is crucial during these times. “Actions big and small will help make a difference,” says Malkoski. “This is our time to give back to the businesses that help build our culture and communities, and we at Newell Brands want to give back too. Academy of Excellence has graduated thousands and established itself as a respected institution with much more to offer its C’MUNITY. The institution’s objective is to build up at-risk students and adult learners, which they’ve done successfully for a little over a decade. Now in 2023, the baton has been passed to Melba’s son and retired Army veteran, Paul Prevot. He’s has come a long way from his early ambition to be a pediatrician to a full out educator. GETTING TO KNOW PAUL PREVOT “As I child I remember wanting to be a pediatrician, and my mom loving that idea even more, but I was always ‘smart,” he told the publication. [However]
Prevot said. “Along with core subjects, our students write [and] recite essays, Power Point, video presentations, and case studies over their chosen career electives. The headmaster has kept workers close to him that collaborated with his mother’s path to success including Calvin Eugene, a software engineer in Fort Bend who worked with Melba at Hightower High School in Missouri City. With 15 years of continuous efforts, Eugene helped build and shape the M.P.J. Academy of Excellence, which is what it is today. Changing lives will always be a showcase of who mattered and influenced. Paul’s influence will forever lie in the foundation his mother set and improving the forward movement for C’MUNITY. HOW HOUSTON’S GENESYS WORKS IS EQUIPPING STUDENTS FOR THE AI TECHNOLOGY REVOLUTION
According to Jones, Genesis Works Houston’s program has been solely focused on high school students, particularly seniors. Jones said,
By d-mars.com News Provider
n early May, Vice President Kamala Harris met with chief executives of Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic to discuss the responsible development of artificial intelligence, the White House confirmed to CNBC. During the discussion, Harris addressed the need for safeguards that can mitigate AI’s potential risks and emphasized the importance of ethical and trustworthy innovation. The meeting’s overall objective was a part of Biden’s administration to ensure safety protocols prior to being deployed to the public. Genesys Works Houston is doing their part to keep students safe from the pitfalls of AI while also educating them on how to be more innovative in the workforce. The company was established in 2002 and prides itself on professional training skills for youth. In addition to GWH’s corporate partnerships, the organization uses those relationships to help students transition smoothly in the workforce.
I
Senior Manager Jarale Jones and alumna Ke’Anna Lawson broke down their IT Pre-Apprenticeship Program that offers entry-level technical skills and certifications to prepare students for positions in the IT and AI field.
Recently, we’ve been able to introduce a new program called the IT Pre-Apprenticeship Program, or the Career Accelerator, which focuses on a different population. Entry level can be misconstrued depending on who you talk to. However, the senior manager detailed that entry level has much more meaning. “Once the [students] obtain their credential it’s just kind of starting their career, but they’re able to complement and supplement college education if they wanted to.”
Students are then able to climb up a ladder using educational tools such as joining organizations related to their interests and utilize any college degree regardless of level to supplement career aspirations. With AI being a hot topic in the news, trends that are used are imperative to understand. When learning trends during formative years, internships are needed to learn those trends. Unfortunately, not all practicums are created equal. A study in 2019 concluded that nearly 40 percent of students lacked value for their internships citing “poor training” and “not feeling confident” leading up to interviewing for careers. Lawson, who started off as an intern, provided a more hopeful stance on her experience with the organization. “I ended up doing a yearlong internship. So, in a span
of a year, I went from hating it or anything tech related to being a computer science major,” she said. “I’m now doing an AI development internship to speak to people’s experience with internships. However, I think everyone’s going to be different. For me I personally think I like that I have an organization behind me that supports me that wants me to succeed.” With AI being on the verge of revolutionizing the workforce, technology has not been without its downfalls and risks. From innocent people being arrested based on voice recognition to record labels fighting back after artists voices have been artificially dubbed over tracks. Lawson says the organization has awareness of the issue and as they study to learn more about those discrepancies, “Of course, you’re going to have people who want to experiment, see what happens. Some people take it too far, but I think that’s going to be with anything,” she described. “You always have your extremist. And I think the best we could do is just give information what’s right, what’s wrong in terms of how to use AI, make sure that people know to be mindful of what you’re doing and its impact.” To stay ahead of the game, Jones admitted that the organization works with contract-for-hire individuals for educational value. “We contract people that are in the industry to be able to look at our curriculum and tell us these are the things that we need to be working on. Specifically, when you talk about the technical skills,” he explained. “But one of the things that we really shine at is our professional skills training.” He added, “We do have some trainees that complete our training and not only get internships but go on to be full time employees at some of these organizations that we work with.” Overall, the IT Pre-Apprenticeship aims to give direct opportunities for hire at partner organizations. Prospective students can apply through GenesysWorks. org. Applications will be accepted until the end of May for the summer training session. Need more? The Black List and the GM Incubator Fund
ANNOUNCE EMERGING FILMMAKER PROGRAM OFFERING $100,000 By d-mars.com News Provider
T
he Black List, a company providing an annual survey of Hollywood executives’ favorite unproduced screenplays, and the GM Incubator Fund today announced the launch of the Writer-Driven Shorts Program, which will provide two emerging diverse filmmakers with a $100,000 grant toward production funds to shoot a short film based on feature scripts. The short films will then be submitted to major festivals and will aim to compete for 2024 awards consideration. GM will also provide both selected filmmakers with vehicles for use in their shorts.
Filmmakers, writers, directors and writer/director teams who have directed at least one narrative short film and have a completed, feature-length screenplay are eligible for the Writer-Driven Shorts program consideration via the Black List’s website through August 15, 2023. “Writer-driven says it all,” said Black List founder Franklin Leonard.
We’re incredibly excited to collaborate with General Motors to provide resources for two screenwriters from underrepresented communities to direct short films based on their scripts with the long-term goal of getting their features financed with them at the helm. I could not be more excited to read the scripts that emerge from this process and see the shorts the selected writers direct based on them. All genres are encouraged to submit for the Writer-Driven Shorts program, ranging from romantic comedy, action adventure, grounded dramas, fantastical sci-fi and more. In alignment with
GM’s sustainable, all-electric future and aspiration to be the most inclusive company in the world, films showcasing sustainability, electrification and/or diversity will be highly considered. Scripts with scenes of excessive violence, illegal drug or substance abuse, car crashes, unsafe driving and/or explicit sexual acts will not be considered. “The GM Incubator Fund focuses on making strategic investments that provide underrepresented communities opportunities to aid in innovative content and storytelling,” said Tarshena Armstrong, GM Director of Multicultural Marketing and Development. “Working with the Black List Writer-Driven Shorts Program, we look to make a meaningful impact within local communities while fostering equitable representation.” As part of a broader commitment to a more equitable Hollywood, the Black List and the GM Incubator Fund will also grant fee waivers for one free month of hosting and two free evaluations on blcklst.com to the first 200 writers from traditionally underrepresented communities. The relationship was brokered by UTA Entertainment & Culture Marketing, the brand consulting division of United Talent Agency that represents General Motors. THE BLACK LIST, an annual survey of Hollywood executives’ favorite unproduced screenplays, was founded in
2005. Since then, at least 440 Black List scripts have been produced, grossing over $30 billion in box office ticket sales worldwide. Black List movies have won 54 Academy Awards from 267 nominations, including four of the last 12 Best Picture Oscars and 11 of the last 28 Best Screenplay Oscars. In October of 2012, the Black List launched a unique online community where screenwriters make their work available to readers, buyers and employers. Since its inception, it has hosted nearly 80,000 screenplays and teleplays and provided more than 130,000 script evaluations. As a direct result of introductions made on the Black List, dozens of writers have found representation at major talent agencies and management companies, as well as sold or optioned their screenplays. Several films have been produced from scripts showcased on the website. Currently, the Black List hosts over 5,000 scripts by approximately 3,700 writer members. These scripts are available for download by industry professionals ranging from agency assistants to studio and network presidents, to A-list actors and directors. More information on the Black List is available at www.blcklst.com. For regular updates, join our mailing list or follow the Black List on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Source: NNPA

HOW A NURSING CAREER IN HOME HEALTHCARE CAN HELP EXPAND CARE ACCESS
By d-mars.com News Provider
or those who are in hospice, recovering from an injury or illness, or who have long-term disabilities, home healthcare can be an ideal solution. It delivers cost-effective, high-quality care in the setting where patients most often want to be -- home. Unfortunately, access to this important service varies by region, with shortages in rural areas, often where the need is highest. Industry experts say that nurses who make the switch to treating patients at home can help close the gap.
F
I’ve seen firsthand how home healthcare is so often the best choice for patients, translating to better adherence to care management plans and an improved quality of life, says Jennifer Sheets, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare, Inc., a nurse with real-world experience herself, and a nationally recognized leader and advocate for continued funding for home healthcare. Whether you’re still in nursing school or a seasoned professional, here are some of the top reasons to consider a career in home healthcare: Career Consistency A career in home healthcare can be a seamless transition for nurses of all specializations, experiences and backgrounds. While many home healthcare patients are older adults, home healthcare actually offers the full continuum of care, and is designed for patients of all ages with a range of chronic and acute conditions. What’s more, home healthcare careers can deliver benefits like good work-life balance, flexible hours you can set yourself, rewarding assignments and competitive pay. Big Impact The last few years have put unbearable pressure on nurses everywhere, making it difficult to provide the personalized care patients deserve. The care delivered in patients’ homes, however, empowers nurses to make a true impact on health outcomes. And it goes beyond that. In areas of the country where there are home healthcare shortages, patients and their families are often faced with tough decisions and difficult circumstances, including extended hospital stays. Home nurses can alleviate strain on the healthcare systems of under-serviced communities by improving access to at-home care. Major providers of home healthcare are actively hiring nurses right now, including Interim HealthCare, which has locally owned and operated franchises nationwide. To learn more about home care careers, visit careers.interimhealthcare.com. “More nurses working in home healthcare means better access for patients who could benefit from care at home,” says Sheets. “If you’ve thought about a career pivot, this is one change that can improve lives and help communities.”

NEW SURVEY REVEALS GEN Z AND MILLENNIALS STRUGGLE TO KEEP A TIDY HOME
By d-mars.com News Provider
ome organizing is more than a trend; it’s a lifestyle. From streaming shows demonstrating how to color-code your pantry to magazines offering tips to unclutter quickly and even a litany of organization products, there’s an abundance of information in the world of home organization. Yet, despite all this great content, younger generations still struggle with staying organized. In fact, a recent survey conducted by Pollfish on
H
behalf of Duck brand finds that nearly 75% of Gen Z and millennials, ages 16 to 42, need a better organizing system or routine at home. Here’s what these generations struggle with the most: CLUTTER IS CHAOS While about half of Gen Z and millennials clean and organize up to an hour a day, they still have an issue with clutter. The survey finds that the kitchen counter is the biggest clutter hotspot, and car or house keys are the top misplaced items. Among their worst organizing habits, 54% of the younger generations throw
everything into a junk drawer, while 40% say they don’t hang up their purse or jacket. Additionally, their top challenges to staying tidy are too much clutter and not enough room. FAMILY DYNAMICS Living with messy family members is another top challenge. Less than half of Gen Z and millennials say their spouses and children pick up after themselves and more than 40% wish their significant other was neater/tidier at home. Most Gen Z and millennials (nearly 64%) feel they are the best at staying organized at home compared to others they live with: about 30% of Gen Z say their parents are the tidiest and 16% of millennials say their partner is the neatest. PERSONAL PREFERENCE A quick and easy installation is at the top of their priority list when it comes to picking an organizing system, but 29% of Gen Z also favors stylish and modern aesthetics. Among the products they’re willing to try, Gen Z is more likely to use shelves while millennials chose a wall organizer. As for the cost, most will spend $26 to $50 on organizing products. SPACE-SAVING SOLUTIONS More than 75% of survey respondents feel they have limited space to store items and 70% wish their backpacks, jackets and hats were better organized. “Americans are embracing a ‘less is more’ lifestyle and prefer clutter-free spaces, but it’s clear they have challenges when it
comes to tidying up,” says Angee Mantell, Insights & Innovation product manager at Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the company that markets the Duck brand.
Simple solutions can help people of all ages create homes that are more efficient, livable and meet the demands of their busy lifestyles. From the entryway to the garage, Duck brand’s EasyMounts Heavy-Duty Drywall Hooks and Heavy-Duty Drywall Tool Holders help restore order to high-traffic areas and give out-of-place belongings, such as key, bags and garage gear, a designated home while keeping them off the floor. The universal mounting system comes in a modern matte finish and installs in drywall without the need for tools, solving the problem of limited storage. While some factors are beyond one’s control, such as the amount of storage space available and the behavior of housemates, smart organizational tools can minimize mess and stress at home, for all generations. 5 Risk Factors that Should Be Considered for Vein Health
15 Why Giving Plasma is A Powerful Tool
14 | June 2023 HEALTH
5 RISK FACTORS THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR VEIN HEALTH
in the veins, resulting in symptoms like swelling, heaviness, aching, cramping, and other venous issues. The excess blood in the lower legs exerts pressure on the veins, causing further stretching.
By Dr. Tonie Reincke Reincke Vein Center
enous insufficiency, also known as vein disease, occurs when the veins stretch and allow blood to flow backward. This common condition manifests as visible veins, varicose veins, and swelling, accompanied by symptoms such as itching, burning, heaviness, cramping, and pain in the legs. The five main risk factors for vein disease are genetics, weight, age, pregnancy, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing at work.
V
Genetics plays a significant role in the risk of vein disease. If one parent has the condition, there is a 50% chance of inheriting it. With both parents affected, the risk increases further. Although everyone experiences some vein stretching, individuals with a genetic predisposition are more susceptible to vein disease. Weight is a crucial factor in the progression of vein disease. Excess weight increases pressure in the legs, straining the veins. This elevated pressure slows down the return of blood, causing it to accumulate in the veins and exert even more pressure. Vein symptoms tend to worsen with age as the veins gradually lose their elasticity. Over time, the veins are unable to maintain their shape, leading to damage and increased symptoms. Pregnancy poses a higher risk for vein disease in women. Hormonal changes and increased blood
volume during pregnancy cause vein dilation to accommodate the excessive blood volume. Veins may remain dilated even after childbirth and breastfeeding, leading to the development or exacerbation of spider veins and other vein-related symptoms. Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at work can contribute to the progression of vein disease. When standing or sitting, the blood in the legs faces the challenge of pumping against gravity to reach the heart. If the veins are already affected by the disease, compromised valves impede efficient blood return. This slow circulation causes blood to accumulate
Although these common risk factors for vein disease cannot be entirely prevented, awareness of them can help individuals adopt behaviors that limit its impact. Maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise can slow down disease progression. Some individuals find relief by wearing medical-grade compression hose, which provides added support. It is also beneficial to elevate the legs and engage in regular movement to promote blood circulation when sitting or standing for extended periods. NEW TREATMENTS MAY HELP THOSE WITH ADVANCED BREAST CANCER LIVE LONGER
By d-mars.com News Provider
ince January 2023, the number of women in the United States with a history of invasive breast cancer is estimated to be 3.1 million and is expected to increase by 12% to 4 million in 2024, according to the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer is highly treatable when caught at the early stages -- there is a 99% five-year survival rate when the cancer is found only in the breast tissue. However, as soon as the cancer spreads to lymph nodes under the arm or to nearby tissues (regional stage), the 5-year survival rate drops to 85%, and once it spreads to other lymph nodes or body parts, (distant stage or metastatic cancer) the 5-year survival rate falls to as low as 27%. These figures suggest there is a significant need for more effective treatments for this deadly cancer. New immunotherapies may provide the solution for patients with advanced breast cancer and fewer treatments options. Currently under development, Bria-IMT and Bria-OTS from BriaCell Therapeutics (NASDAQ: BCTX), are two drugs that have shown promising results so far in clinical trials, with substantial tumor regression in several patients, even those with metastatic cancer. Both drugs work through a completely novel therapeutic mechanism, using breast cancer cells to generate a strong immune response against breast cancer. “For many breast cancer patients, the only option left is chemotherapy. We realize how hard chemotherapy is on the body, commonly causing nausea, vomiting, hair loss, lack of appetite, inflammation of the mouth and tongue, and bone marrow suppression, which can lead to serious and at times fatal infections,” says Dr. William Williams, CEO of BriaCell Therapeutics. “ He added, “Recently, immunotherapies have come to the fore as a type of therapy which avoids most of these side effects. Unfortunately, immunotherapy only currently works in a small subset of patients, and then only when given with chemotherapy.” “We are dedicated to developing new, more effective immunotherapy approaches that have very few side effects and may provide substantial benefits to more patients. We hope our efforts will afford these patients another option that is much better tolerated and can provide improved quality of life and prolong their survival,” Dr. Williams concluded. In the case of Bria-OTS, a simple saliva test can determine a patient’s cell type so they can receive personalized immunotherapy treatment. Dr. Williams notes that this technology is already being explored for other cancer treatment uses, including prostate cancer, lung cancer, and melanoma. To learn more about the future of cancer treatment, visit briacell.com/about-briacell. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in U.S. women. Thankfully, drugs on the near horizon may transform the way we think about treating the disease, particularly in its later stages, and provide new hope to patients.

The World Youth Foundation: A Volunteer Organization Making an Impact for 33 Years
By d-mars.com News Provider
ach day, an evaluated 11.3 million youth leave school with no place to go. This number only rises within the mid-year. These kids miss out on valuable learning opportunities, as well as a secure place to go when school is not in session. Having out-of-school time programs can make a considerable difference in their lives presently and in the future. These programs

can aid kids to learn, develop and dodge hazardous behaviors. Over 10 million children attend after-school programs once the school day ends. Nonprofits continuously seek quality volunteers and quality out-of-school time suppliers are trying to find openings for kids and youngsters to perform benefit learning encounters. The CEO thanks the City of Houston, Mayor Sylveter Turner, VMPT Martha Castex Tatum, the Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee, James Harris, H-E-B Family, Claude Cummings, Jr., CWA, and many
others who have been significant in allowing our 33 years to be made possible. Since its founding in 1990, the World Youth Foundation (WYF) has remained true to its mission to “Empower every youth to win in life against all odds”. Thirty-three years ago, the trailblazing Founder & CEO of WYF, Karen Levingston – Franklin, had a bold vision to deliver transformative programs to millions of youths around the world that would lead to a healthier and more equitable future for each of them. The World Youth Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that serves as a vehicle to improve the development and character of the “Whole Child” – Mind, Body, and Character. The organization’s allencompassing approach creates and delivers cost-free out-of-school-time learning programs and evidencebased mentoring for underrepresented youth across the nation. CULTIVATING THE WHOLE CHILD MEANS TO NURTURE AND SUPPORT THEIR HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT. ~ Karen Levingston-Franklin, CEO
Q&A with Karen Levingston-Franklin MS. FRANKLIN, WHAT WAS THE MOTIVATION BEHIND WYF? WHY THE CREATION OF THIS ORGANIZATION IN THE NON-PROFIT SECTOR VERSUS OTHER OPTIONS?
Perhaps this introduction to the non-profit seems organized to some. However, Franklin speaks with a level of passion that surpasses any mission statement or vision. She is the vision manifested which sits on sturdy ground rooted in passion, purpose, and her pioneering spirit.
My decision to start a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving youth was driven by my deep sense of purpose and responsibility to be a positive role model in the world. My passion has always been to understand what motivates young people to succeed in life and the hurdles that stopped them from achieving that success. Once I deeply understood those barriers, I knew that my sole purpose on this earth would be to help them move beyond those to discover their definitive voice. This meant creating a platform for them to build their self-confidence by encouraging them to take risks, try new things, and celebrate their achievements along the journey to help them “win in life against all odds.”
HOW DOES WYF CREATE MORE ENGAGEMENT FOR YOUTH TO PARTICIPATE AND GET INVOLVED DISCOVERING PATHS TO QUALITY ENRICHMENT? I will give you a real-world example, although there are thousands, I could share with you. One of your young WYF Ambassadors, Christian Craddock. He started his journey with our foundation when he was in middle school. Fast forward to college, he still participates in our program by providing mentorship to other students. Recently, he was selected from a large pool of candidates to attend Disney University for an immersive internship. Christian also launched a startup clothing business and attributes his successes to the WYF learning and mentoring programs.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR WYF AND HOW CAN CHILDREN GET INVOLVED? As we celebrate 33 Years of serving our communities
WHAT HAS BECOME A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU with excellence, we will host our first-ever Back 2 TOWARDS THE ADVANCEMENT OF OTHERS? School Summit at the George R. Brown Convention
During a 2018 clip posted on the organization’s Facebook page, the business maven can be seen engaging with a young man as he works to assess his thoughts and feelings on a matter prior to deciding to do better at something.
“Use your voice,” she told the young man with a patient tone. Her tranquility gave a kind space for the youth to feel embraced and able to vocalize his thinking through encouragement, reinforcement and a momentary impact filled with possibility. Recently celebrating a milestone as the company turned 33 in April, Franklin told d-mars.com how exceptionalism for kids’ development is nurtured “beyond the classroom.”
I wake up each day in prayer and meditation, thinking about what more I can do to empower business and young people each day with the tools to express themselves authentically, confidently, and effectively. I work with many partners to design and deliver the necessary tools, support, and opportunities to discover and develop our young people’s unique perspectives, talents, and views. I personally get an opportunity to witness the power of what happens when they gain the ability to articulate their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, so that they can advocate for themselves, communicate their needs, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
WHAT DOES CULTIVATING THE “WHOLE CHILD” – MIND, BODY, AND CHARACTER MEAN TO YOU NOW IN AGE WHERE OUR WORLD HAS SEEN SO MUCH WAR TOWARDS YOUTH AS OPPOSED TO WHEN WYF WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1990?
Center on July 23, 2023. More than 2,000 youth across Houston and the Greater Surrounding Areas will join a host of business, government, and industry leaders to learn about next-generation STEM + Health education and careers through inspiring talks that will empower them to act and lead change across their communities. The youth will also participate in a “dance-off contest” where there will be cash prizes given. So, students don’t want to miss this exciting youth conference dedicated to advancing their futures. Also, we have an exciting opportunity through our partnership with ARAMARK and are looking for FUN and ENERGETIC Volunteers for the 2023 Astros & Houston Texans season. If you are 21+, register here to find out more details. https://lnkd.in/giKiM3B5 To participate in any of this year’s celebratory events including the Back to School Summit, please visit www.worldyouthfoundation.org
To me, cultivating the whole child means to nurture and support their holistic development, encompassing their mind, body, and character. It emphasizes a comprehensive approach to education and personal growth that goes beyond academic achievement alone. When we talk about the mind, this involves providing opportunities for intellectual growth, critical thinking, creative problem-solving. When we talk about the body, this means focusing on promoting physical health and well-being. It involves encouraging regular exercise, healthy eating habits, and maintaining an active lifestyle. And finally, the character component of all of this encompasses the social, emotional, and ethical aspects of a child's personality. Together, this promotes positive relationships, empathy towards others, and a sense of social and community responsibility.

HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU THAT YOU’LL BE ABLE TO RETIRE?
person, many look forward to traveling, visiting family and enjoying hobbies. Are you confident you will be able to retire with your basic expenses covered and enjoy the post-work life you’ve imagined? Check these three things.
1. DEFINE YOUR GOALS
By d-mars.com News Provider
ore Americans are retiring earlier than previous generations. According to a survey by the Federal Reserve Bank, their odds of retiring before age 62 rose to roughly 50% in July 2021, partly due to the pandemic. For many, moving up their retirement seemed like the right choice given the state of the labor market and economy, but many were not and are still not financially prepared to retire. According to a 2022 retirement confidence survey from the Employee Benefit Research
M
Institute, one in three workers are “not too” or “not at all” confident they will have enough money to live comfortably throughout their retirement. And for those surveyed who say they are confident, retiring “comfortably” only covers the basics like housing, transportation, health care, food and utilities. Retirement can mean a lot of things, but most people envision it as a time after their working life to enjoy things they may not have had the time to do before. While this looks different from person to
After decades spent working, the prospect of retirement can feel sudden, and some people may have difficulty envisioning what it will look like. When you picture your retirement, what do you see yourself doing? Traveling abroad and checking cities off your bucket list? Paying for your children’s or grandchildren’s weddings? Setting up a legacy fund for your loved ones? If you don’t yet know what you want out of retirement, start thinking now. Without clear goals, you won’t know how much money it will take to reach them. Beyond your core living expenses, consider how you would like to spend your time during your “go-go” (the first 10 years of retirement), “slow-go” years (middle retirement), and beyond.
2. SEE WHERE YOU STAND Now that you have defined your goals, it’s time to see how your savings, investments, retirement accounts and other assets can support your desired retirement lifestyle. An easy way to check your retirement readiness is to use an online platform like Prudential Stages for Retirement. This digital tool will take the information
you share about your current financial life and retirement goals to determine your personal “confidence score,” which indicates your retirement readiness. In a few steps, you will have a clearer picture of your retirement based on how you are saving and investing today.
3. SPEAK WITH AN ADVISOR Once you have a clearer view of the big picture, you can meet with a financial advisor to help map out a step-by-step financial plan. If you do not have a financial advisor, you’re not alone. Millions of Americans do not have a financial advisor. Some do not because they don’t know how to find someone they trust. Still others may feel an advisor is not for them, mistakenly thinking they need a certain level of wealth to engage a professional’s help. However, establishing a relationship with a financial advisor can help you confidently plan for a better retirement and even give you an edge. According to the Warrington College of Business, industry data suggests that people who receive professional financial advice can add 1.5%-4% to their portfolio returns over time. Enlisting the help of a financial advisor can make planning for retirement easier and grow your wealth so you can achieve your retirement goals instead of having “just enough,” or even not enough. TIRED OF TIGHTENING YOUR BUDGET? HERE’S HOW TO FIND A SIDE HUSTLE “In addition to providing an extra source YOU’LL LOVE of income, many side hustles are flexible, By d-mars.com News Provider
ighten the purse strings. Balance the budget. Cut back. There are many ways to say it, but the current economy has millions of Americans doing the same thing: struggling to make ends meet. Wouldn’t it be nice to alleviate the financial pressure? For some people, this means asking for help. Four in 10 people have asked their loved ones for money over the past year to deal with the rising cost of living, according to an Herbalife survey of 8,500 respondents across 10 countries, including 2,000 Americans. Results show respondents are relying on others for help with essentials, including groceries (40%) and their rent or mortgage (29%). Asking for help is hard to do, but it’s certainly not reflective of people’s lack of effort. In fact, 56% of respondents currently have a side hustle or other form of supplemental income. Of those people with side hustles, 55% shared they started it solely to make ends meet, 40% to deal with the rising cost of living, 38% to be less reliant on a single source of income and 36% wanting to have a disposable income.
T
allowing people to work at their own schedule,” explained Ibi Montesino, Herbalife’s executive vice president of distributor and customer experience. “Our research shows that on average, most people say that they’d need to earn about $404 more per month to live comfortably.” The research also shows that those with a side hustle commit an average of about eight and a half hours per week to that side hustle. But that time can vary: 28% dedicate 3-5 hours a week to their side hustle, while 24% devote 6-10 hours per week. If you think a side hustle might be helpful for you, there are many options based on your interests, resources, and availability. Some people care for kids or pets, while others may do house cleaning, landscaping, or other handy work. These types of side hustles can help you save money, but it can be challenging when you’re solo and don’t have a support system. Another option that some people find is a better fit is direct selling. This is when you are an authorized representative that sells products for a company, and the big benefit is that there is often training and a support system to help you succeed.
The increased cost of living is causing people to search for supplemental income streams. Direct selling provides flexibility and a support system that positions you to reach your goals, said Humbi Calleja, Herbalife’s vice president and general manager, North America. If you’re interested in direct selling, it’s important to find an opportunity that works best for you. Montesino and Calleja recommend these simple tips to help people find the right network marketing company: PINPOINT THE IDEAL PRODUCT OR SERVICE: Finding a consumable product that sells consistently and needs replacement is a great option. Choose something you’re passionate about because you’re more likely to dedicate time and effort to it. LEARN ABOUT THE COMPANY: Before deciding what company to move forward with, researching their background is a must. Typically, the longer the company has been in business, the more experience it has.
Experience Our World of Advertising, Marketing, Media and Communication
DETERMINE START-UP COSTS: Once you identify the right company for you, determine the cost of the start-up kit. It will contain everything you need to get started and run your business. STUDY THE COMPENSATION PLAN: This shows you how the company plans to incentivize and reward your hard work. It will also give you an idea of income expectations, income frequency and how long it will take to reach your goals. CONFIRM MARKETING SUPPORT: Aside from your start-up kit, having access to marketing support helps grow your business. For example, the company should help you identify the target market to understand your customers better and provide online marketing resources to help you launch effective promotions. RESEARCH TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES: Ongoing training and opportunities to connect with people going through the same experience will help inspire you and enable you to run your business better. Opportunity for growth: Ensure that the company has demonstrated continuous growth opportunities and is committed to helping you with resources and support as you strive to reach your goals. No one can predict what the economy will do in the future, but you can take control of your finances by adding an extra income stream. Start by researching opportunities and choose the right one for you. Source: BrandPoint

HOME PRICES UP AGAIN WORSENING INVENTORY SHORTAGES AND MODEST RISE IN DEMAND
By d-mars.com News Provider
he data and analytics division of Black Knight, Inc. (NYSE: BKI) released its latest Mortgage Monitor report, based on the company’s industry-leading mortgage, real estate and public records data sets. A modest rise in homebuyer demand led to home prices strengthening for the third consecutive month as both January and February were upwardly revised to show positive movement in prices. As Black Knight Vice President of Enterprise Research Andy Walden explains, while historical trends would suggest an increase of new listings in the spring, the inventory shortage at the root of this home price strengthening has instead worsened as the country moves further into the traditional homebuying season. “Home prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.45% at the national level,” said Walden.
T
A modest bump in homebuyer demand ran headlong into falling for-sale supply, leading to the third consecutive monthly increase in home prices after they’d been pulling back from recent peaks through the tail end of 2022, essentially nationwide. In fact, just five months ago, prices were declining on a seasonally adjusted month-overmonth basis in 92% of all major U.S. markets.
Fast forward to now, and the situation has done a literal 180, with prices now rising in 92% of markets from February. Despite the home price strengthening of these past couple of months, the backward-looking annual growth rate continued to cool as the influence of the red-hot spring 2022 market fades in the rearview mirror. Prices are now up just 1.0% year over year, with the annual growth rate on track to fall to roughly 0% by April. That said, low inventory levels will limit just how far that metric will fall in coming months. “The strengthening in home prices is the direct result of a second month of modest increases in sales volumes meeting a continually shrinking for-sale inventory. Our Collateral Analytics data showed the supply of active listings fell for the sixth straight month, to the lowest level since April 2022. On top of that there was a deterioration in supply among 90% of major markets,” per Black Knight. They added, “New listings aren’t filling the gap
either – 30% fewer properties hit the market in June as compared to pre-pandemic norms. That deficit’s now increased in each of the last six months and is up from -27% in February and -25% the month before. Given the modest rise in sales volumes, current available inventory represents just 2.6 months of supply on a seasonally adjusted basis, tipping the scale back toward sellers in a tightly constricted market.” This month’s report also draws upon daily rate lock data from Optimal Blue, a division of Black Knight, to help gauge the impact of today’s volatile rate environment on mortgage lending activity. Rates remained volatile through March and April – from a high of 6.85% to 6.21% by early April, then back up above 6.5% by the middle of the month. More noteworthy in recent weeks is the pullback in purchase rate lock volumes despite overall lower mortgage rates than we saw in March. Through April 26, rates have averaged 6.38% for the month, down from the 6.56% average daily rate for the month of March. While rates have eased, and the heart of the traditional home buying season takes hold, purchase rate locks have pulled back in recent weeks, falling 18% (unadjusted) from their late highs. Likewise, refinance volumes are down 17% among cash-outs and 24% among rate-term refits since mid to late March. This trend is worth watching closely in the coming weeks given the delicate balance of supply and demand in today’s market. Granular, timely data has become ever more essential as the market continues to sift through each new shred of economic news in hopes of predicting how the Federal Reserve and broader economy will react.

Chunky Buffalo Cauliflower Bites
By d-mars.com News Provider
ey d-mars.com readers! As you know, we’ve been serving it up vegan style lately. Ahh come on! Nothing like a little change, right? We recently interviewed CLEO TV’s Chef Jernard Wells and his southern-inspired dishes. For those who have been considering healthier dishes and ditching the meats, check out the chef’s recipe using cauliflower which costs less than $5 dollars at your local stores. Quick note: Cauliflower contains anti-inflammatory effects, anti-aging agents, serves as a detox booster and promotes healthy weight loss due to its low calories. How do you like those apples!? For the plant-based eaters or even those just looking to incorporate more meatless options in their holiday hosting, Wells’ chunky buffalo cauliflower bites are a great addition.
H
INGREDIENTS • Vegetable oil, for frying • 1 cup cornstarch • 2 ⁄3 cup rice flour • 11⁄2 teaspoons garlic powder • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika • 1⁄2 teaspoon cayenne pepper • Kosher salt
• Cracked black pepper • 1 cup plain seltzer • 1 head cauliflower, cut into bite-size florets • 3–4 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, for garnish • Carrots and celery sticks, for serving
VEGAN BUFFALO SAUCE • 1⁄4 cup plus 2 tablespoons non-dairy butter • 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1⁄2 teaspoon onion powder
• Pinch cayenne pepper • 11⁄4 cups hot sauce • 1–2 tablespoons agave
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Pour vegetable oil into a Dutch oven or large, heavy-bottomed pot to no more than halfway up the side. Prop or clip in a deep-fry thermometer so that the bulb is submerged in the oil. Heat over medium-high heat until the thermometer registers 350 degrees. (Alternatively, you can use a deep fryer.) Line a plate with paper towels. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, rice flour, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne. Season with salt and black pepper as desired. 3. Add the seltzer a little at a time, whisking after each addition, until the batter reaches the right thickness. Not too thick and not too thin—it should coat the back of a spoon without excess dripping. 4. Dip each piece of cauliflower into the batter, tossing to coat evenly. 5. Working in batches, fry the cauliflower until golden brown all over, 7–9 minutes. Remove the cauliflower with a spider and drain on the paper towels

The Civil War ended in the summer of 1865. Union General Gordon Granger and his troops traveled to Galveston, Texas to announce General Orders No. 3 on June 19, 1865. June 19th would go on to be known and celebrated as Juneteenth. General Orders No. 3 stated: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.” Photo: Austin History Center, Austin Public Library
