Seeks to Make History; Runs for Texas Railroad Commissioner Brown Wants to Be Advocate for the Community
P
icture this…you’re a homeowner with a wife and two young children who attend the local elementary school. Every day you wake up early to take them to school. They play outside with the neighborhood kids on weekends and there are often neighborhood block parties. It’s a peaceful environment. However, one day that changes. An oil company begins drilling near your neighborhood – thousands of feet below – to find oil and gas reserves. This disruption greatly affects your community, from 18-wheelers driving up and down the street to loud drilling. Today, The Railroad Commission (though the name doesn’t imply) is the regulator of the oil, gas and coal industry. Unfortunately, there are a lot of oil companies who have acted irresponsibly when it comes to the environment, and it is the Railroad Commission’s responsibility to keep nature and human interaction in harmony. To assure the community that the Railroad Commission’s decisions are made solely in the public’s best interest, Steve Brown, Democratic nominee for Railroad Commissioner, will seek common ground by balancing energy industry influence with the needs of landowners, community stakeholders and the preservation of our water resources. The Railroad Commission is the oldest regulatory agency in Texas.
“The Texas Railroad Commission is arguably the most powerful and influential state agency in the country. It’s time that our community and the voices of the most vulnerable among us have a seat at the table deciding our state’s energy future.” – Steve Brown
Brown already made history in Texas, being the youngest African American Democratic candidate to ever win a statewide primary election. The North Carolina native who moved to Texas with his family while he was still in middle school plans to make history again in November by being elected Railroad Commissioner, which will make him the youngest African American Democrat to ever hold state office in Texas. Brown’s background and past experience includes: Director of Small Business Initiatives for Houston METRO, Chairman of the Fort Bend County Democratic Party, the American Heart Association Vice President for Public Advocacy, Budget Analyst for the Texas House Appropriations Committee, successful small business owner and Congressional Aide. Brown and his wife Monique have two sons and live in Missouri City. He is passionate about creating opportunities for families to succeed and believes Texas needs a Railroad Commissioner who will be an advocate and elevate the concerns of the public. He has proposed a series of reforms which he will work to implement as Railroad Commissioner. Brown took a moment to share with d-mars.com his reasons for running for Railroad Commissioner, specific issues he’d like to address, as well as how it felt to make history in the primaries.

d-mars.com: What is your most personal reason for running for Railroad Commissioner? Brown: “I believe that the Texas Railroad Commission can improve on its promise to adequately support the oil and gas industry’s growth while also protecting the environment, ensuring public safety, facilitate small business opportunities, as well as safeguarding land owner and consumer rights. I see it as my duty to fulfill that promise for the hundreds of families I’ve met throughout this campaign. They need and deserve an advocate. It is important that we continue the abundant growth of our energy industry, as it’s the engine of our state’s economy. Equally important, the Texas Railroad Commission must have the resources to quickly respond to everyday Texans’ concerns. I believe that this agency can once again effectively operate as it was intended – to facilitate energy production while also protecting the interests of all Texans. That’s why there needs to be a proven public advocate on the Railroad Commission.”
d-mars.com: What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about the Texas Railroad Commission? How do you plan to educate the community on its actual purpose? Brown: “The biggest misconception is its name, which should be an easy fix. I’d prefer a name like the Energy Resources Commission or something that actually reflects what this agency actually regulates.”
d-mars.com: Name the very first issue you’d like to address if elected Railroad Commissioner.
winning the statewide primary election? Brown: “Honestly, I didn’t realize that it was historical until after the Primary. It’s a great honor and accomplishment. With that designation also comes a level of responsibility to those who support me and who may follow me. As a result, it’s important that I run a race that would make them proud. That means winning in November so that I can become the youngest African American to hold statewide office.”
d-mars.com: How do you think your prior expeBrown: “For too long, political insiders more concerned rience has helped prepare you for the position with avoiding controversy than having a real dialogue with of Railroad Commissioner? Texans have controlled the Commission. The first step towards a balanced and efficient commission is to listen. It is that simple. From a culture that promotes listening, we ought to enact reforms that provide Texans the tools necessary to make informed decisions about their property and communities. One such reform would be establish an Office of Public Advocacy that would serve as an information hub for citizens with grievances before the Commission, assisting them during the hearing process.”
d-mars.com: What do you feel is the Texas Railroad Commission’s greatest strength? Brown: “That’s hard to say. The Texas Railroad Commission is perhaps a textbook example of dysfunctional government. The influence that political insiders and special interest groups have over the Commission has muffled the voices of everyday Texans and real families are getting left out. Between contested mineral rights, property takings or earthquakes, these families need someone who will advocate for them.”
d-mars.com: You made history during the primaries. Can you describe your feelings after
Brown: “I’ve been fighting for Texas families for over a decade and a half. First, as a legislative aide working on solutions to increase funding for health care, education and our state court system. Later, as an advocate for Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program funding (CHIP), as well as public health initiatives. Over that time, I’ve learned how to analyze problems, aggregate stakeholder input and identify public policy solutions to sufficiently address those issues. Perhaps more importantly, I know how Austin should work. Not by picking winners, but to give everyone a fair shot to influence policy and rulemaking outcomes for the betterment of our state. That is what being a public advocate is all about, and that is exactly the skillset that is needed at the Commission.”
d-mars.com: Tell me one thing people may be surprised to know about you. Brown: “I guess, like most kids, I thought I was destined for a life in professional sports. That is until I realized that there’s not much of a demand for 5’10” point guards at the Division I level. Despite that I lettered in both basketball and tennis at Westbury High School and went to college on a tennis scholarship.”

Designer’s Perspective:
How to Display Your Personality
A
By Linda Lindsay
Contributing Writer
llow me to introduce myself to the d-mars. com audience… I am a designer who has had the opportunity to work with a vast market share, from the rich and famous to the family who has little to none budget. A single mother that just wants to add some color to her child’s room…a bachelor who wants to add something that reads an invitation
to the women they are trying to connect with…to a business person who wants to make their office give the message, ‘I am serious, yet friendly.’ Oh yes, the life of a designer – somewhat of a therapist, an organizer, a problem solver and a fashion guru. A designer’s job is to make all clients feel good – no matter how young or how old – a person who works with all types of budgets. As a designer, I define myself as a person who flips and flops in and out of environments, creating and suggesting ways to make people feel good about where they spend most of their time, whether it’s in a studio apartment or a 20,000-square-foot home, from a retail space to a corporate office. I actually enjoy the opportunity to stage lives which enhances their environments for success. I am excited about sharing my tips with you and will be
happy to answer any questions you may have monthly. The opportunity to work with the d-mars.com’s audience is huge and to be able to assist in designing the lifestyles of the most progressive people here in Houston is even bigger.
My Mission Bringing your space to life will be the most rewarding experience in enhancing your lifestyle. I create silhouettes of
grandeur and grace, allowing for timeless fashion statements. I show you how to mix and match or not, maybe just showing you how to display collectable items that allow for a space to display your personality. I’m able to assist you in making suggestions on how to build your own refection of who you are in your domain and show you how to create intimate settings with classic, vintage or modern styled seating selections…and much more. I can offer direction in showing you how to stage dramatic spaces that are normally used for comfort. Remember: your home is a presentation of who you are! Next month, I will prepare a list of why you need a designer when decorating your home. Regards, Flip Flop Designer “Designing Your Lifestyle”

KIDZ CORNER Taking the ‘Bull’ out of Pitbull
Contributing Writer
P
itbulls are sweet, loving dogs. Now you may think pitbulls are vicious, hateful and mad dogs, but it’s not the dog’s fault if the owner doesn’t give them proper training, love and affection. Pitbulls first got their terrible reputation in gangs. Different gangs used them as battle dogs and for dog fights. Some pits were provoked, beaten, abandoned, chained and starved. Some had steroids put in them. Some pitbulls are even trained to kill – that’s why some have to be euthanized or put down…all because of the actions of a terrible person. You should support pitbulls and the people who save them. If your child would like to submit an article for KIDZ CORNER, please email it to editor@d-mars.com.
North Houston Frontiers Club Celebrating 27 Years of Serving Houston’s Youth HOUSTON, TX – On Monday, January 19, 2015, the North Houston Frontiers Club will host its Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast at the Hilton AmericasHouston Downtown at 8am. This will mark the 27th anniversary of this event and we hope to make it a very special occasion. The net proceeds ($25,000) from the breakfast are historically used to fund the scholarship program. They have awarded over $1.2 million in scholarships over the past 26 years. Proceeds from the 2014 Breakfast were used to fund (22 students) $1,000 scholarships and (four students) $500 scholarships for this year’s breakfast alone! The North Houston Frontiers Club, Inc. (NHFC) is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) service organization dedicated to providing educational and charitable assistance to needy minority students in the greater Houston area. They sponsor two major activities each year to support the organization, one of which is the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast, which solely funds their scholarship program. Their desire is to form a partnership with you to further the goals and ideals
of Dr. King. The need is great in our community to provide opportunities for young and gifted individuals to reach high levels of success Dr. King dreamed of them achieving in this country. A partnership with their organization would aid the youth of Houston and assist our best students in moving forward in their educational endeavors. NHFC is seeking sponsorship support from local small business and ma-
jor corporations in the area. They would love to meet with you and discuss their rich history and their future plans to address the critical problems the adults of tomorrow face right now in the world which we live. Please visit www.nhfrontiers.com for a registration form for the event and donation format for the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast as well as other information about the organization.
