While children often mimic and idolize celebrity role models, there are community role models in our very own backyards, in our schools and even in our homes who are often overlooked. The local hero can and should be just as influential as those seen on television and in movies. Our cover story features one of our community role models. Dr. Heather Brown has provided quality orthodontic care to the Houston community for several years and she’s been actively involved in the community as well – volunteering, serving as a mentor and establishing the Houston Chapter of Smile for a Lifetime Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing orthodontic care to those in need. I know that you will enjoy this issue full of models, role models and more! As always again, thank you for your continued support of d-mars.com. When you support d-mars.com, you are supporting more than just our company; you are supporting the communities in which we live and work. Working together, we can succeed in making positive things happen.

The gift of a smile can have a long lasting positive effect on a child and can lead to greater opportunities in their future. I am truly honored to be a part of the Smile for a Lifetime Foundation as Founder of the first chapter in Houston. We have enhanced the lives of so many wonderful and deserving children. – Dr. Heather Brown

Orthodontist Dr. Heather Brown Positively Impacts Patients and the Community By Valerie Jones Associate Editor

O

rthodontist Dr. Heather Brown knows firsthand the power behind a genuine smile. Through her private practice, Dr. Heather Brown Orthodontics, she has led numerous individuals to better smiles. She also shares her smile with the community. Whether she’s participating in a health fair or Dancing with the Houston Stars, you’ll never catch Dr. Brown without her smile. For years, Dr. Heather Brown Orthodontics has served the community by providing quality orthodontic care and superior customer service to those in need of treatment. Dr. Brown has been pivotal in helping to prepare the next generation of orthodontists by establishing the Summer Orthodontic Internship Program – a four-week, in-office training designed for high school and college students interested in pursuing a career in dentistry. “This program exposes each intern to hands-on exercises and material that provides them with a solid introduction of what is required to become an orthodontist,” she said. “Each intern gains valuable knowledge that will help them in making good career choices in the future. Applicants are encouraged to apply early in

the beginning of each year.” Dr. Brown also founded the first and only Houston Chapter of the Smile for a Lifetime Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides orthodontic care to individuals who may not otherwise have the opportunity to acquire assistance. “The gift of a smile can have a long lasting positive effect on a child and can lead to greater opportunities in their future,” Dr. Brown said. “I am truly honored

to be a part of the Smile for a Lifetime Foundation as Founder of the first chapter in Houston. We have enhanced the lives of so many wonderful and deserving children.” Having extensive experience in treatment for adolescents, Dr. Brown knows and understands that many teenagers may be afraid of the stigma that comes from wearing braces. She is often approached by her teen patients with the question, ‘Will I have my braces off in time for my senior pictures, graduation and prom?’ “Most adolescents and families are simply not aware of the various treatment options available for orthodontic care. Most identify braces as bulky, metal train tracks; therefore some of them decide to put off treatment until a later time,” she said. “The good thing is that our office offers many different types of braces – ranging from metal to clear to invisible. Teeth can be straightened without anyone knowing that you are in treatment.” Dr. Brown touched on other barriers keeping adolescents from receiving proper orthodontic care, such as limited family finances and hectic schedules. To help combat these barriers, Dr. Brown’s office offers affordable payment options as well as evening and Saturday appointments. Much like she gives her all in her private practice, Dr. Brown is just as involved with her family—she’s a wife to former NFL player Eric Brown and mother to

their two boys: Jaxon and Jace—and her community as well. Dr. Brown’s heavy community involvement spans from school carnivals to work with nonprofits and small businesses. “I have been honored in many capacities within the community. In my view, I feel that it is relatively easy to just write a check and donate money to support, but I personally prefer to be hands-on and actively involved,” she said. “While giving money to a good cause is great and important to do, what we can bring in terms of energy and time is often more important than what we can give financially ourselves. Not only do I support community efforts financially, but I also give my time, which I feel is more meaningful.” Not planning on slowing down any time soon, Dr. Brown plans to broaden her mentorship program and further provide special assistance to students aspiring to enter the field of dentistry.

I truly believe the fashion show at our Celebration of the Year rivals that of any runway show in New York or elsewhere. That’s how much I believe in the talent of the stylists, designers, tailors, boutiques and models we have here in Houston.

Meet the d-mars.com Top 50 Black Models’ Most Nominated:

Kaya Pickens and Mary Johnson By Valerie Jones Associate Editor

Kaya Pickens and Mary Johnson were the Most Nominated Models for d-mars.com’s 2014 Celebration of the Year. Neither women are

strangers to the runway. They both graced the stage last year as Top 50 Black Models in which Pickens wore the Most Nominated crown. d-mars.com took some time to get to know the women behind the clothes.

with Kaya Pickens was. He made me stand two feet away from him in the first picture, then eventually, he cooperated. d-mars.com: If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could have either: one person with you and no electronic devices or just your cell phone and no people, which would you pick and why? Pickens: I would definitely choose to have one person with me. A personal/intimate interaction with someone real can never be replaced by or compared to the many facades people put on social media today. d-mars.com: Why do you feel it’s important that we recognize African Americans in the field of fashion in Houston? Pickens: I feel it is important to recognize the African American community in the field of fashion because it is extremely undervalued. Our culture, in my opinion, holds some of the most creative minds in the world. Events such as d-mars.com’s Celebration of the Year gives African American designers the chance to showcase their frequently undermined talents and gives African American models a chance to show the world a different side of beauty with curves, dark skin and kinky hair. d-mars.com: What is the most outrageous thing

you’ve worn/done in the name of fashion? Pickens: I’ve worn my newly purchased boy shorts underwear on stage to show off a beautifully and uniquely designed super high-slit dress designed by Lauren Carmon of TheBoutique.

with Mary Johnson d-mars.com: You were last year’s Most Nominated model. How does it feel to be one of the Most Nominated again this year? Pickens: It’s an honor and a pleasure to be one of the Most Nominated models for the second year running. It feels great to know that I have supporters in my community who believe in me and also support the movement that d-mars.com is creating. I look forward to being a part of this awesome journey for years to come and looking back and saying, “I was a part of it from the beginning.” d-mars.com: Tell me about your prior modeling experience. Pickens: My prior modeling experience started when I was in junior high school. I received a first-place model of the year trophy presented by personnel from Page Parkes modeling agency and went on to receive call backs and placements. I’ve walked the runway in fashion shows in Houston, Los Angeles and other big cities. I’ve done photo shoots for cosmetic lines and clothing boutiques. I have been heavily recruited to model promotional items for businesses such as Boss Life Cigars (Slim Thug’s e-cigar line), Hennessey Black and other businesses. d-mars.com has afforded me the opportunity to display my talents on another level. d-mars.com: What can you say about the clothes of the designers and boutiques you walked in this year? Pickens: Oh wow, the clothes were so stylish, classy and unique. The quality of the clothing was unbelievable. The designers really knew how to accentuate a woman’s body image and were really some of the most pleasant people I have worked with in a long time. Shoe Fetage’ and the Lisa Nicole Collection had some amazingly designed pieces. I will definitely be shopping there in the near future. d-mars.com: What was your most memorable moment from this year’s event? Pickens: My most memorable moment during this year’s event was when I was given the opportunity to socialize, dance and communicate with some great people including Wendy Raquel Robinson, Malorie Bailey-Massie, Lisa Nicole Cloud and Carl Payne; more specifically when Carl almost refused to take a picture with me because I was so much taller than he

d-mars.com: You were a d-mars.com Top 50 Model last year. How do you think you have grown and evolved as a model since then? Johnson: So many wonderful things have happened since last year’s show. Because I am not only a fashion model, but a role model to so many young ladies, I am more conscience of what I do or say in the public eye. I want to always be looked upon in a positive way.

d-mars.com: What was your most memorable moment from this year’s event? Johnson: Being named one of the Most Nominated models this year was the most memorable moment for me. d-mars.com: How would you describe your personal style? Johnson: I’m very unique and exotic. d-mars.com: Tell me about your prior modeling experience. Johnson: I never had any experience prior to the Top 50 Models event last year. But it was always my dream. d-mars.com: How did you become interested in fashion? Johnson: I have always been interested in fashion since I was a child. Everyone has their own niche. Mine is fashion. d-mars.com: What three songs are in heavy rotation on your playlist right now? Johnson: “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith, “Her Heart” by Anthony Hamilton, “Want You Back” by Boyce Avenue d-mars.com: What are three items in your purse that you absolutely cannot live without? Johnson: My LAMIK “Dramatic” lip gloss, Altoids, credit card d-mars.com: What is the most outrageous thing you’ve worn/done in the name of fashion? Johnson: I would have to say wearing dark brown, work combat boots…so ugly, but I thought they were the bomb.com!

How Do You See Me? By Minister Eugenie Doualla Contributing Writer

“All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the thoughts and intents of heart.” “Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; he will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed.” – Proverbs 16:2-3 We need to recognize three trustworthy and honest friends around us and take time to sit down with them several times a year and ask them, “ how do you see me?” Take their answers and put them in prayer by asking God to open your spiritual heart to see and understand what He wants us to see and understand. It could be a good checkup for our Spirit. With the New Year coming, it could be the best time to do this, so we can make good resolutions for 2015. Prayer: Father in Heaven, we thank you that we have you as God in our life. You always called us to triumph and you will never forsake us. Therefore, we do not lean to our own understanding. Thank you for always making provision around us to understand your Will through your words and sometimes through the people you place in our life. Help us to surrender to you alone our ambitions, thoughts and understanding – the only way we could never go wrong. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

All Eyes on YOU

I

By Charlotte Jackson Contributing Writer

n a world where everyone’s every move seems to be reported on social media, it is more important than ever before to think before every action. As we have seen over the recent months, details are distributed instantly to millions of people who do not know a person and really have no business knowing what goes on in their lives. Many people seem to be looking for reasons to destroy others. As soon as an athlete, entertainer or elected leader stumbles, regular ordinary people seem to know about it and spout off judgment and punishment. Likewise, this often happens in families and in churches. Mistakes are much more likely to make headlines than acts of kindness. Gossip tends to spread much quicker than praise. We must become the generation that stands up and not only encourages others by speaking life into our own family members, but also to strangers. Recently, while speaking to two younger women, one asked me why some of the people in the news headlines did not learn from their mistakes. I shared that perhaps they have not learned because they are too busy fighting off the negative comments and actions of haters. I went on to share that

when someone makes a mistake and others learn about it, the enemy is quick to devour and try to provide confusion and a scandal. Yet, it is best to learn young that if something does not directly impact your health, bank account or reputation, you do not need to worry about it. Instead you need to pray for those being raked over the coals as well as those doing the raking. Throughout the years, I have seen elected leaders make mistakes and before they could even address the issue, there were constituents calling for their resignation. I have seen professional athletes who fathered children outside of their marriage lose endorsements as well as have their lives displayed all over the media. These effects are minor compared to the damage done to the relationships and to the person’s own self esteem. Sometimes I wonder how many people are driven to suicide just because too many people were in their business. Perhaps if we learned to praise in public and examine mistakes in private, those who make mistakes could then acknowledge their errors, seek forgiveness and get help so that there is not another issue later leading to more destruction. As a mother, I have always told my

children that there are three sides to every story. Each person involved has their story and God has the truth. If these same words apply to my life, shouldn’t I apply them to others? I believe each of us is called to be a role model to not only our children, but to all people we come in contact with, be it family or Person X that we will never talk to. We should not expect more of others than we expect of ourselves. We must be role models.

Don’t be Afraid to Make a Choice

T

By Ash Davito

he most important lesson in life is to “Make a Decision.” Whether right or wrong, simply making a choice is what takes you to the next step towards your destiny. The RIGHT choice will get you to your goal as will the WRONG choice. Just because you make a poor decision or bad judgment call does not mean you will not succeed at reaching your goal. I believe God has designed our lives for us to learn from the good and bad

things in life and our decision making. Things may not happen how or when we desire, by they certainly will happen if you don’t give up. Of course we all want to make the right choices. Some people even believe that every choice they make is the right one, but what is the foundation of their decision making? If your heart is set on doing something, your spirit will not let you give up. As a result, you start to analyze everyone around you – family, friends and associates – and you align yourself with people of common morals and values. Part of making the right decision is knowing what you want and knowing what you need to accomplish that goal. As a businessman, I don’t only want to make the right choices in business, I also desire to make the right choices in people with whom I do business. The right person will do the right job with the right attitude. Every seed you sow into your life or career will reap some

kind of harvest and eventually that harvest will manifest itself into you living your dreams all because of the

right AND wrong choices you’ve made during your journey. It all started by making a decision.
