in speaking and preaching God’s word, he is also equally gifted in the area of music. Pastor Patrick has produced gospel music in almost every major city in the country, with many well-known gospel artists. Pastor Patrick was the driving force who brought the Stellar Awards Gospel Showcase to Houston, and he continues to be a consultant for this showcase. In addition, he also serves as Executive Producer of Take It to the Bridge Ministries, President of Crossover Records, and he holds key positions in other gospel enterprises.

r. Gregg J. Patrick (Pastor Patrick) and The Southwest Community Christian Center aka “The Bridge” kick off their 25th silver anniversary celebration with their Divine Encounter Valentine’s Day Gala held on February 14th. This year, the gala features Ron Isley and The Isley Brothers, Johnny Gill, and The Gap Band. Hailed as the ultimate Valentine’s Day experience for over a decade, this benefit gala brings the church and the world together in what Pastor Patrick describes as, “All God’s people coming together in a no judgment zone. It’s just good times and good music, in a non-alcoholic setting.” Pastor Patrick is known for bringing the community to Christ through unorthodox, but effective methods of ministry. The Bridge has been serving Southwest Houston and the surrounding areas since 1991, meeting the spiritual and educational needs of the area.
TheBridge: Bridge:History History The The Bridge was founded January 27, 1991, and it opened with 19 members and a vision to meet the growing spiritual needs of its surrounding community. In September of 1991, they opened the Southwest Community Christian Academy (SWCCA) to further meet the spiritual and educational needs of the area. Beginning with just 19 students and 3 teachers, it has grown to its present enrollment of
more than 200 students and a staff of 30. Pastor Patrick and the continuously growing congregation continue to develop community services such as The Windows from Heaven Resale Shop and The Southwest Community Health Club. The Southwest Community Christian Teen Center was created as a necessary place where teens could come and receive a variety of instruction, counseling, and tutoring, while having fun in a Christ-centered environment. Additionally, The Southwest Family Crisis Center was created for family members to receive counseling that would nurture both life and spirit. The membership of The Bridge has grown from its humble beginnings to a diverse membership of thousands, fourteen associate ministers, and fourteen deacons. The Bridge continues to build and grow, moving forward in God’s will.
The TheBridge: Bridge:Pastor PastorPatrick Patrick Pastor Patrick is currently in his 25th year of the ministry, and he is one of Houston’s most recognizable servants of God because of his leadership, message, and activism in the community. He began his ministry in 1982 as an Associate Minister at McGee Chapel Baptist Church of Houston. After serving there faithfully for nine years, Pastor Patrick began the Southwest Community Baptist Church, now known as “The Bridge” in January, 1991. His work has opened doors for him to serve as an advisor to President Obama and work with other local and national political leaders. Pastor Patrick is a regular host on the Christian Broadcast Network’s Praise the Lord. Pastor Patrick speaks locally, nationally, and internationally. As gifted as he is

Pastor com about his leadership, com about his leadership, minisministry, The Bridge: try, and Theand Bridge: You are not only a pastor, but a family man. How do you encourage members of your congregation who come from broken families? “The best way to encourage those who come from a broken family is to provide a family for them. The Bridge emphasizes constant connection with each other. Everyone has a prayer partner or an associate they can call on, especially in these current times of stress, financial strain, and worldly rejection.” When did you know you were called to preach the word of God? “I saw my vision of the church prior to being called to preach. In late 1980, while filming a lead-in to a show here in

the foundation of our craft. The gospel music quartets, choirs, and traditional singers like The Williams Brothers, The Mighty Clouds, Dottie Peoples, Vickie Winans, Shirley Caesar, and other great traditional singers should not be forgotten.” Talk about your music being Godcentered and giving people the message of Christ. “All gospel music in word or instrument must communicate the message of Christ in some way, whether that message be love, joy, peace, grace or salvation. There is a message in the music, and writers are bringing it out more and more!” Talk about how you have seen The Bridge grow over the years. “Starting with only 19 people, it’s been a wild, but wonderful ride spiritually and physically. Over 14,000 have come through the door and joined in with the fellowship. We’ve started and assisted financially 41 churches right here in Houston and others around the world. Our academy is one of the top in the nation, having been featured on numerous Christian programs like The 700 Club and The Christian Broadcast Network.”
CONTINUED from page 4 Houston with my employer, Redd Foxx (Sandford and Son), I felt in my spirit to move in the area of Bellaire and Highway 6 (the place we were filming). I mentioned it to Redd, and he dismissed it, but I couldn’t. I moved to Houston 3 months later and accepted my call to the ministry at McGee Chapel Baptist Church. Ten years after that, and after training and honing my skill as a pastor and leader at McGee, I saw confirmation of the vision, and founded Southwest Community Christian Center (The Bridge) on January 27, 1991.” There are so many issues in our city. What do you feel are the top issues that Houston churches should be addressing? “The church must address the needs and concerns of the un-churched, those who have a need for understanding, those who have been hurt or abused, and those who feel ostracized, abandoned or alienated from the church. We must open avenues of enlightenment and participation with the church. Our programs here at The Bridge do exactly that. Hence our theme, ‘Bridging the World to Christ!’ and our church slogan, ‘Founded In Love and Forgiveness.’” How have you partnered with other churches/organizations in the area to help address the issues of the community? “Yes, many times we’ve joined hands with Congresswoman Sheila JacksonLee and The Community of Faith led by Bishop James Dixon during the Christmas season. We also continue to partner with the local Radio One stations, providing for those in need during the Thanksgiving holiday.” What is your message to the community and the church today? “Let us move forward to a new awareness of self, heritage, and our place in God’s Kingdom to help lead the world to Christ, and not hinder the world. The world includes all ethnicities and colors, and The Bridge is color-blind. We are proud to have a diverse congregation, and we welcome all members of the community. God is about love and so
Pictured from left to right: Kandy Isley, Ron Isley, and Pastor Patrick is The Bridge. We want the community to come out and celebrate with us on February 14th.” Talk about your work and leadership outside of Houston. “We have a world-wide ministry in song and the word through Trinity Broadcasting Network and the hit CD’s the Lord has allowed us to record. As a local and national host for the past 5 years, it has afford me opportunity to share Christ all over the world. I have been inspired by my mentor, the late Myles Munroe.” Talk about recognitions and awards received. “I have received numerous local and national awards for service to the community, my work at The Bridge, and my contributions to the community. Receiving Stellar Award and Dove Award nominations for our CD, Crossover, which featured the hit, “I Am a Witness,” was a major honor and blessing. One of the main highlights of my life I must say, is being invited to dinner at the White House by former President Clinton and President Obama.” As a pastor and leader, you have a full plate. How do you balance family and effectively lead your congregation? “As with any leader, balance is imperative to lead a ministry successfully. I put God first, then family, and the church
third. If God is not first, then things will suffer.” When did your passion and gift of music start? “I truly love gospel music, but I listen to all forms of music. I began in secular music and film in 1974, working with numerous artists like The Gap Band, James Brown, Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and many others. I’ve managed some great TV and stage stars. In 1999, we started Take It To The Bridge, the world’s largest gospel concert that was held in the Astrodome, where over 50,000 joined together in praise. This concert featured over 40 of gospel’s best and was televised world-wide. I have produced and have been executive producer for John P. Kee, Bishop Marvin Sapp, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Darryl Coley, Billy Preston, Dr. Bobby Jones, and many others. We’ve filmed our own DVD’s and recorded two great CD’s. I never thought they would be the hits they were, and I continue to thank God for His matchless Grace. I encourage pastors, musicians, directors, and singers to keep writing and producing, and in God’s timing, your shot will come!” Gospel music has changed. What is your take on gospel music today? “Gospel music is alive and well, and has gone through many changes. The new sound of high-praise and rap giving God glory is great, but we can’t forget

How would you describe The Bridge and its worship experience? “Our worship experience is very unique, in that we combine a holistic approach to the gospel. Our message of God, the songs and our praise and worship experience help to enhance the worship experience at The Bridge. It’s such a joy to know that The Bridge is bringing people to Christ through non-traditional methods of the ministry.” The Bridge is staying in line with the word of God, but using an unconventional approach to bring people to Christ, dispelling the myth about Christians. The Bridge’s Divine Encounter Valentine’s Day Gala is their upcoming event on February 14th, featuring Ron Isley and The Isley Brothers, The Gap Band, and Johnny Gill at The Hilton-Americas. This highly anticipated event will not only have Ron singing with The Isley Brothers, but also singing a gospel duet with his wife, Kandy. “Our unique and nontraditional approach to ministry brings the world into a place where they are able to fellowship with Christians. This will be a huge Valentine’s Day event. Jesus didn’t wait for people to be saved, but He went out to them. This event is one of The Bridge’s initiatives that gets people in an atmosphere that is without alcohol, and where they can enjoy themselves and find fellowship with God’s people,” says Pastor Patrick. Since 1991, Pastor Patrick’s work at The Bridge has been God-ordained, and nothing else, and he gives all the glory to God. He is proud to be doing God’s work, continuously spreading the message of hope and love. The Bridge has had a great 25 years serving the Houston community, and together, Pastor Patrick and The Bridge will continue to bring the world to Christ. Through all of these ups and downs that the journey of life takes us on, we must remember that we are not our circumstances. The overwhelming events and thoughts that we are faced with can cloud who we are and where we are headed. With all of this, I thank God that every day we get to start anew and be the person that we want to be and know we can become. It’s easy to find ourselves comparing ourselves to others and looking to others for what should be next in our own personal journey, not realizing that who we are stands on its own. Working Parents: Think Your Employer Doesn’t ‘Get’ You? You May Be Right, but There Is Still Hope By d-mars.com News Provider
M
ore American families than ever before have two parents working, but recent studies show many employers haven’t adapted to this change in the workforce demographics. Working parents feel burnt out and unloved at work, making them less creative, less productive and more likely to quit because of work-related stress, according to the 2015 Bright Horizons Modern Family Index. Employers can do their part to create a culture that supports working parents and reduces the risks of valuable employees quitting or experiencing burn out. Managers should watch for signs of employee burnout and provide opportunities for working parents to voice their concerns. The Modern Family Index, which surveyed working parents across the country and in different industries, found: • Sixty-two percent of working parents don’t believe their employers care about them. They also say employers are inattentive to the needs of working parents (64 percent) and don’t have their best interests at heart (76 percent). • Just 34 percent of managers are concerned working parents struggle to balance work and life demands, while just 30 percent worry about whether working parents feel their company doesn’t care about them. • Although nearly all parents say they experience burnout, 70 percent don’t speak up about it. Meanwhile, 60 percent of managers say working parent burnout can be avoided. The same percentage of parents say their manager wouldn’t even realize when parents experience burnout. • Seventy-nine percent of working parents and 77 percent of managers say to curb burnout, changes need to occur in the office, not at home. The first step is for parents to begin voicing their concerns. “Many of the parents we surveyed expressed frustration with their employers and indicated they feel their companies don’t really understand or care about the stresses they face,” says David Lissy, CEO of Bright Horizons, a provider of employer-sponsored child care and other work/life solutions. “All employers must consistently look for new ways to ensure the culture they are cultivating is one that resonates with and is valued by their employees. The labor market is tightening. Jobs are expected to out-
number workers by 5 million by 2020, and competition for top talent will continue to intensify.” However, the survey indicates the blame does not fall squarely on employers. Both employers and parents need to do better to adapt to the new realities of modern families. “Good communication between employers and working parents will benefit both groups,” Lissy added. Working parents can take several steps to improve their work/life struggles. Kim Callaway from Horizons Workforce Consulting agrees that the first step is communication. Parents should talk to their managers. Often, managers are unaware if an employee is struggling to balance work and home demands. Talking to a manager means you can work together to find a solution. “Don’t just point out a problem,” she says. “Be prepared to suggest a viable solution. You can also take advantage of the annual employee opinion survey most employers conduct and share your concerns in an anonymous forum.” In addition to speaking up, parents can also take other steps toward a more satisfying work-life balance. • Learn more about your employee benefits. You may be unaware of some, such as back-up child care or a telecommuting policy that can help. • Be realistic and honest about your work and personal goals. When both you and your employer understand your goals, you can work together to achieve them. • Take a vacation. Employees who take less than 25 percent of their earned vacation are more likely to feel burnout, according to a recent study by Horizons Workforce Consulting. • Rest is vital to your overall wellbeing, and a lack of sleep negatively affects satisfaction with life, health, work and financial success. The Horizons Workforce Consulting study also found 60 percent of working adults don’t get enough sleep each night. • Managers should watch for signs of employee burnout and provide opportunities for working parents to voice their concerns. Regular meetings about work-life issues can help generate ideas for solutions and give employees a better sense of community. “People want to work for employers who understand and support their needs,” Lissy says. “This year’s study shows communication among employees, managers and company leadership needs to improve. When working parents express their needs and employers listen and respond, the whole organization benefits.” – BPT

A Duty to Give Back
the negative attention police officers get today. It’s important we get the message out there that law enforcement does not equate negativity, and we provide assistance to those in need. When I speak to youth, it allows me to hear their frustration of past experiences with law enforcement. For me this is no problem, as I discovered that it’s important for them to voice their opinion. I had a chance to speak to a group of displaced teens, and they had stories of their friends getting shot and police officers harassing them, and they made statements like, “I don’t like cops.” I explained situations from my viewpoint, which allows them to see it from a different angle. I ask them specifics of an incident, which provides a better understanding of how law enforcement works. At the end of the conversation, they start to trust law enforcement a little more. Sometimes a young person just needs
guidance or a mentor to show them that they care. Working with law enforcement, members of the community can help educate the young generation. We have to consider that we all come from different backgrounds. Working together, the community and law enforcement can expose our young people to positive environments that will help grow them into responsible adults. Working with HPD’s H.O.T. has been one of the best positions I could ever ask for. My duty is to build a rapport and sound relationships with the homeless population over the city. Once a relationship is established, we see what we can do to ultimately assist them with getting them off of the streets or connecting them with the right organization to help meet their needs. A majority of the homeless population suffers from mental health illness. We link our displaced citizens with Bristow Path of Harris Center,
formally MHMRA. Our partnership with the Harris Center consents for each officer on our team to ride along with a case manager, and this is a huge help anytime we encounter an individual dealing with mental illness who wants help. This connection helps make it easier for them to get an appointment to receive medications and permits us to get them an appointment for evaluation. This also helps them get linked with a caseworker so they have guidance to have a complete recovery, which includes assistance with receiving housing. Homelessness is not hopeless. We as a people just have to do better with caring for this special population. Everyone that is homeless is not poor. They may be going through a life transition that has them homeless at the moment. People really care about our homeless community, so they may offer money, food or clothing. However, I’ve discovered that giving money might not be the best solution for their cause. Many of our homeless consumers are addicted to drugs and alcohol, therefore, any money received they will use it at the liquor store or buy drugs. One of my homeless friends told me that money does enable addiction, and that we should ask them if they need help with anything. If they say yes, the best thing to do is contact HPD’s H.O.T. at (281-883-8449, or 281-460-2680). Ask for a homeless outreach unit to come out to assist a homeless consumer you’re trying to help. This just might save someone’s life. I challenge each of you to join me in doing a good deed daily; either with a youth that may be in need of mentorship or assisting a homeless consumer and encouraging them to revive their life. meet these notables, but I formed relationships with many of them in ways that cannot be explained. On more than one occasion, I have had the honor of meeting people such as former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who is a survivor of a senseless shooting, and her retired astronaut husband, Mark Kelly. Nothing makes me smile more than looking back on how God has opened doors for me to establish relationships with many types of people, including young couples who are now not only happily married, but parents who share their children’s photos with me. It was a great position, but God had bigger things in store for me. He always knows when to move us, even when we don’t understand why. I remember being contacted by someone who was calling to see if I was still interested in a position that I had applied for in 2008. I was thinking, “Really? Organizations hold on to applications that long?” I went to the interview, accepted the position, and then quickly realized that I had not prayed before accepting the part-time seasonal position.
The company was one I had respected for years, but needless to say, my time there was a short-lived adventure. I found myself resigning, as I felt God wanted to use me in a way I would minister to others. For those of you who have been reading my articles over the years, I frequently remind you that nothing happens by accident. Most of you have read my articles where I mention my youngest son afflicted with bipolar disorder and paranoid schizophrenia. Many of you have read enough of my articles to know that I am a firm believer in prayer. Many times you have read about me claiming Ephesians 4:32 over my relationships. I pray daily for restoration and healing of relationships. It was late Christmas night when I was messaging with a friend that I realized the importance of knowing how to listen. She said, “Charlotte, I’ve been seeing you on the front page of the Houston Chronicle, and I’ve seen you on the local CBS affiliate. It’s obvious that you are listening to God.” In October 17th of last year, there was
an article in the Houston Chronicle about mental health issues where I was interviewed, as well as the President of NAMI Greater Houston. On December 6th of last year, KHOU aired a story on the Houston community, standing united to keep our city safe. When the story aired and as you look for it on their website, you see me holding hands with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and many community and faith leaders of our city. On Christmas day, the Houston Chronicle again had my picture on the front page, as well as on their website discussing a life-changing ministry given by God. Information can be found at www.thestorybookproject.org. Had I not been obedient to God, praying for others and for my own attitude, I might have missed out on the blessing of meeting my second cousin on December 13th at his best friend’s wedding reception. To learn more about that miracle, you will have to watch for future articles, but for now, my prayer is that as we are in 2016, you will join me in knowing how to listen.

hen joining the Houston Police Depa r t ment (HPD) Academy in 2010, representatives spoke to my class about the various opportunities within the department after our probationary period was complete. One of those opportunities presented was on HPD’s Homeless Outreach Team (H.O.T.), and at that moment I knew that I would join that team. Before joining HPD, I was a juvenile detention officer with Harris County. These two opportunities assisted in bringing my passions to the forefront, providing me with the vision and tools to found my nonprofit, TheraGood Deeds. TheraGood Deeds is an outreach organization that provides mentoring to youth and assistance to the homeless. While at Harris County, I realized during this time that many of the youth had a different upbringing than I did. There was a definite generation gap, so I saw it necessary to adapt to them in order to help them and get my message across. Being a police officer can work against me at times when working with the youth, because many of our young people feel as if the police are against them. It’s important for us as a society to help mend this perception, especially with all

The Best Is yet to Come!

I declare that the year of 2016 will be a Sweet 16!
S
weet sixteen years are culturally and historically referred to as the “coming of age” year. It is the year when an individual transitions into adulthood. This monumental moment is often celebrated with extravagant formal parties. They include make-up artists, DJ’s, gowns, and tuxedos. The purpose is to celebrate the next level of living from one stage to another in life. I declare that this year will be the coming of age year for everyone who is bold enough to believe that the best is yet to come in their life. Get your make-up together, get your playlist in rotation, and get the party gear assembled. If you can believe it, you can achieve it, and you will receive it. 2016 is the year to come of age in three specific areas of our lives. First, in our
faith. Second, with our favor from God. Third, with our fortunes. This is the year we will experience the love of our Creator in these three areas. Why? Because biblically, 16 is a number for love. In the Old Testament, Psalms 25:6-7 reads, “Remember, O Lord, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindness, For they are from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: According to Your mercy remember me, For Your goodness’ sake, O Lord.” This is simply declaring that it was the time to “come of age!” It is significant to note that the word lovingkindness found in Psalms 25:6 is composed of 16 letters. When God expresses His love towards us, it is inclusive of faith, favor and fortune. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul proclaimed to the Corinthian church 16 distinct things about the quality of love that God has and wants us to have too. These 16 distinctions are located in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. God is love. His love is expressed in the number 16. His love involves our faith, favor, and fortune. Did you know that the 16th time the word love is mentioned in the book of 1 John it reads, “There is no fear in love.” Can I bless you? It doesn’t matter what you’ve encountered or experienced in 2015. There’s no need to fear. If you are bold enough to expect greater this year,
God will demonstrate His love towards you, and you will discover a Sweet 16. Faith is forward action in trusting Him. You can move forward in spite of your past by trusting through faith that the best is yet to come in the areas of faith, favor, fortune, family, finances, fitness, and future. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. We all know that without faith it is impossible to please God. If you believe, then you know that God is a rewarder of those who seek Him. Our faith opens doors for God’s favor in our lives. Favor is unmerited, undeserved, and undeniable. When God’s favor is on our life, everyone will notice it. Our family, friends, and even our foes will see it. When David fought Goliath, no one could deny the favor over David’s life. When the 3 Hebrew boys escaped the fiery furnace without a scratch or stench

of smoke, no one could deny the favor over their lives. When Joshua marched around the walls of Jericho and the walls came tumbling down without weapons or words but worship only, no one could deny the favor over his life. With God’s favor, no one will be able to deny what He’s going to do for you this year. Our faith and God’s favor will equal fortune. Fortune is not just a large amount of money. Fortune is also something that happens by chance. When we take the chance and believe, our doubters will call it an accident. Our haters will call it a lucky incident. However, if we believe, we can call it divine providence. Are you ready to come of age? Are you ready for a Sweet 16? You should shout, because the best is yet to come! Receiving God’s Best
J
Minister Eugenie Doualla Contributing Writer
esus has set a path for His children when it comes to living a successful and peaceful life on this earth before we meet Him in heaven. John 14:6 reads, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 10:10 reads, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” For some of us who need a new beginning, this is the perfect moment to start, renew or restore our relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When we embrace His love and let it take over in our life, we are a new creation in Christ Jesus, which guarantees us peace and joy that cannot be shaken,
and the assurance of eternal life. When we have His love, road blocks seems inexistent, the weight of our sins, iniquities, and transgressions are cast down. This doesn’t mean that we will not have troubles, but we can be sure with Jesus that no matter what trouble comes our way and no matter what we face, we know that we are redeemed and shall overcome. Isaiah 43:18-19 reads, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” I recall when my father went to be with the Lord, I didn’t have a relationship with the Lord yet. My father’s death devastated me, and I continued to wonder who was going to protect me. My father was my hero, and in my mind I thought that as long as he lived, nothing would get to me. My father would
always say, “It’s going to be alright.” My father didn’t just say the words, but he showed me and my brothers and sisters his love through his actions. Jesus Christ is the same way, and He continues to show me His love through the blessings I continuously receive in my life. Through Matthew 7:11, we are reminded that if we ask Jesus, He will give us good gifts. Many want to give up when they don’t see things happening their way, but that
sometimes is because we do not seek God first, but do things our way instead of His way, and we don’t seek Him first. Our first priority as Christians is to seek first God’s kingdom. Matthew 6:33 is a great reminder of that and reads, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Today’s Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, we thank You for being a good father. You’re a great God. Thank you for loving us. Your love is so amazing. Please open our hearts and minds to realize how amazing Your love is. Even if we don’t fully comprehend how amazing Your love is now, give us the heart to yield so we can experience the peace that comes with knowing You. In the precious name of your son, Jesus Christ, amen.”

Designing Your Life for New Beginnings
H
By Linda Lindsay
Contributing Writer
appy 2016! Your environment and living space have a lot to do with creating your new beginning. Start your new beginning by reading and using my ten simple steps and design tips for 2016. Keep in mind that while designing, create a décor aesthetic of rich layered rooms that blend serious style and playful individualism. Tip #1 Your interior is very personal, so do not be tempted to jump into a project straight away. Before you get into the styling, think first about how you need the space to work for you, and plan accordingly so that you get it right the first time. Tip #2 Start with the end in mind. Know what you are trying to achieve by getting clear on what the mood and style needs to be. Build a visual repre-
sentation of your objective, so you have something written. Have a visual to refer to, and you will stay on track. This will help you end up with the result that you’ve planned from the beginning to create a dream interior. Tip #3 Find people you trust and love, as they will most certainly give you good advice based on what they know about you and how they envision the space for you. Tip #4 Creating your personal style
and selecting items with a story will be what turns an average room into a space of serenity. Tip #5 Consider the location of the space. This often dictates what styles and materials are appropriate to use. Tip #6 Try to avoid impulse buying by working within a tight colour palette, and plan carefully to ensure the finished scheme works as a whole. Tip #7 Don’t worry about what others will think. Design the space the way

you want. Surround yourself with things that make you happy. Tip #8 Quality always matters. It will cost more to have to redo or replace, so make sure you are working with the best people and highest quality products. Tip #9 Always keep functionality and practicality in mind when designing. Tip #10 Follow your instincts when it comes to selections of art. It’s a sure result for design success. Happy New Year!

just tryin’ to be the first Von Won.” To hear him in this song accept himself and not try to be someone else is truly amazing, especially in today’s society. Where many artists today are trying to sound like someone else, thinking they will be more accepted, Von Won goes against the grain and reminds us that the world is looking for and needs your uniqueness, not another clone. Von Won founded the Hunger Awards, a Christian hip hop awards show. This annual event held at the end of the year is highly attended and celebrates Christian hip hop artists. I attended, and it was truly a night to remember. At the show, Von Won didn’t win an award, he didn’t host the show, and he didn’t perform that night. The Hunger Awards is not about him, but he has created this platform to highlight and showcase what Christian music brings to Houston. In addition to the Hunger Awards, Von Won is using his experience as a Christian artist to help other artists. Through his company, Walwyn Consulting LLC, he manages, mentors, and develops artists. Houston and the world can expect more great things from this man of God. For more about Vaughaligan Walwyn, please visit him on the web at www.vonwon.org. For more on Evangelist J.J. n all realms of life, there is that individual who stands out among the rest. In the city of Houston, when it comes to music, that individual is Vaughaligan Walwyn aka Von Won. It is one of my missions to always uplift those who are spreading the message of God, and Von Won is one of those people. Not only is he an artist, but he is also a dedicated minister who I hold in high regard. Recently, he has been blessed with a major opportunity as the Senior Marketing Manager for NGEN radio, a new Christian rock and Christian hip hop radio station. This man of God has dropped several projects in the span of 8 years, and I am a huge fan of his music. The track that made him stand out the most to me was “The First Von Won” on his album, Answering the Call. On the track he says, “I ain’t trying to be the next Lecrae or the next ‘Pac, The next Notorious B.I.G. or the next Barack, I’m

ow that 2016 has emerged, thought provoking questions are dancing around in your head. Why am I here? Am I really enjoying my life? What was I placed here to do? Is this world a better place because of my being? What value am I adding? What am I passionate about? What is my purpose? Passion is something that brings you joy, pleasure, satisfaction, and fulfillment. What do you enjoy doing, and what would you do even if you did not get paid for it? Purpose is what you were placed on this earth to do, add or contribute and make a positive difference. Maybe you would like to become a chef or go back to school to become a teacher. Perhaps you enjoy helping people and want to become a doctor. What is it that makes life worth living for you? What turns you on?
• I enjoy doing… • I take extra care when I… • I am good at… • People always compliment me on… • I get excited when I…
Polling your family and friends • Choose a friend/ family member that you trust to be honest with you. • Ask their opinion of what they think you are good at or what they enjoy most about you. • Do not take their honesty personally or become defensive. The purpose of this exercise is to get genuine feedback that will move you closer to your purpose.
Now, don’t become overwhelmed by all of this. Prayer and meditation will help you have peace about your new discovery. Listen to your instincts and become in harmony with what feels like the best choice for you. Don’t worry about how old you are. Don’t worry about past failures and mistakes. Whatever you choose, just make sure it is something you enjoy. Once you decide to live on purpose, you must formulate a plan. Your plan can be something as simple as goal setting. Have you ever had something you wanted to accomplish and you think about it or maybe even talk about do-

ing it, but somehow it never happens? Goals are the “how” to realizing your purpose. Your plan does not have to be formal or elaborate, just a list of things that you want to accomplish that will get you to your intended outcome.
Here are some basic things to remember when setting goals: • Identify your goals - What steps will it take in order for you to walk in purpose? • Write down your goals - Committing your goals to paper allows you to be clear about what you really want to accomplish. • Set a date for achieving your goals - Assigning a date to your goals holds you accountable and gives you a definite time frame in which you have to work. Remember, everyone was placed on this earth for a reason. Discover where your true passion and purpose lies, and be clear and intentional about it. Set goals to help you achieve your intended success. Once your goals are in alignment, go after it with everything you’ve got! Do it now and refuse to delay your destiny any longer. The journey may not always be easy, but it will be worth it to live your best life. For more information on Tammi Durden, please visit on the web at www. tammidurden.com.

A New Year and a New You By Pastor Ogletree

appy New Year! A brand new opportunity to access love, life, and the pursuit of happiness has been granted to you. This brand new year is waiting for you to use it to the best of your ability. Much of what happens to you will be impacted by your decisions, actions, attitudes, and speech. God has given us the gift of life and time, with which we are to advance and seek to fulfill our purpose on this earth. Now in 2016, the question should be, “What can I do better in this new year?” We each have been given the same amount of time to seek and take advantage of new opportunities. The word to focus on is new, because 2015 is gone! Some of you are thankful to God for 2016, because last year may have brought you emotional or physical pain. Last year may have damaged your perspective on life. However, that was
last year, and you survived! You have left the old, and now you are in the new. Will this year be a happy one? Hopefully, but although we do not know the future, we do know that God knows and holds our future. Looking back and holding on to the old will be a great hindrance to taking advantage of the new. Those attitudes and actions used in the old year that were negative, destructive, and unhealthy will blind you to your new opportunities. To embrace the opportunities that await you this year, you must let go of the heaviness of the old. You can’t carry the old and the new and be successful. It’s like
mixing oil and water, and it just doesn’t mix. It’s a recipe for disaster! Jesus Christ expressed a caution of mixing the old and the new and said, “No one patches up an old coat with a piece of new cloth, for the new patch will shrink and make an even bigger hole in the coat” (Matthew 9:16, GNT). The caution from Christ is to not place the new on the old. That is the pattern of far too many people. They continue to dwell in or wallow in the old pain, the old predicament, the old problem, and attempt to put something new on it. That is patching, and it doesn’t work. Too many attempt to patch their emo-

tions, relationships, spending or health. A patch is nothing more than a cover attached to the old. It will only be a temporary solution to your pain. After a few weeks or months, a tear will come, and the situation will be worse. This year brings new opportunities that will require a new perspective, a new attitude, and a new determination. New opportunities await you, so trust God and ask Him to make you anew to embrace and enjoy 2016. Pastor John D. Ogletree, Jr. is the Pastor and Founder of First Metropolitan Church located at 8870 West Sam Houston Parkway N., Houston, TX 77040.

Resolve to Make Difficult Times Easier for Your Loved Ones By d-mars.com News Provider

here are few traditions as optimistic in spirit as resolution setting. Every Jan. 1, millions of Americans make resolutions. In 2015, the second most popular resolution — behind dieting — was to become better organized, according to the Statistic Brain Research Institute ranking of top 10 New Year’s resolutions. Although sometimes intimidating to take on, organizational initiatives can produce enormously satisfying results. One such gratifying organizational endeavor involves getting your thoughts together, documenting your information and expressing how you want to live out the rest of your life. This undertaking is uniquely rewarding because it will give you peace of mind while also helping to make difficult times easier for your loved ones.
are no longer able to do so. The emotional impact they will suffer as a result of their loss will be compounded by the stress of dealing with the legal, financial and logistical aftermath. While it’s never easy to step into another person’s financial life, the task becomes infinitely more difficult when loved ones have to guess how things should be handled, or cannot find important information, such as bank and credit card accounts, health care proxies, wills and contact names and numbers. There are countless stories of families who did not talk about their end-of-life
wishes and financial matters until it was too late. In fact, 90 percent of people say it’s important to talk to loved ones about these issues, but only 27 percent have done so, according to the Conversation Project National Survey conducted in 2013.

Stepping into another’s financial life: A daunting task Eventually, your loved ones may need to help with your personal care (in case you become ill and need assistance) or handle your financial matters when you

The process is not onerous — it simply involves gathering, consolidating and making the following information available: • Insurance and beneficiary information • Key contacts, advisors, and executors • Financial information and accounts • Online accounts, memberships, and social networking identification • Location of important documents • Final arrangements and wishes If this list seems overwhelming, don’t despair, help is available. A New Year’s Resolution You Can Stick To By d-mars.com News Provider
I
t’s time again when millions faithfully pledge to better themselves by making numerous New Year’s resolutions. Some estimates report more than 40 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, yet only about 8 percent achieve their goals. Happy New Year, indeed. The typical list of New Year’s resolutions include: losing weight, working out more, quitting smoking, getting a better job, spending less and saving more. Not surprisingly, missing on everyone’s top 10 checklist is an important resolution that’s incredibly easy to achieve: checking your tires monthly and maintaining them. “Even though tires are the only part of a vehicle touching the road and play a valuable role in our everyday lives, they usually go unnoticed,” says Bob Abram, product planning manager for Yokohama Tire Corporation, manufacturer of everything from ultra-high performance tires for passenger cars and SUVs to tires for buses and trucks. “Year round, tires have an enormous impact on our driving. They influence the braking, steering, comfort, handling, fuel efficiency and driving safety of every vehicle. Making sure the
tread is in good shape and your tires are properly inflated helps increase traction on wet and icy roads, which is especially important during the winter season.” However, to keep your tires in tiptop shape for better stopping distance and control, you routinely have to check them to make sure they are properly inflated. “Tire pressure is critical,” says Abram. “When a tire is underinflated, the car’s weight rests more on the tire’s shoulders than its center. That not only causes poor fuel economy, but also uneven wear.” Abram says knowing more about your tires — including which ones are best for your vehicle — will ensure a better, longer-lasting ride. “At Yokohamatire.com you can easily find out which tires work best for what you drive, plus details on how to maintain them. For example, if you drive a crossover, SUV or minivan, you can learn about a tire like the GEOLANDAR G055, which is specifically engineered for the most common and demanding uses of those vehicles.” Abram says start the year right by pledging to take care of your tires to enhance vehicle control and maximize safety. His tire care New Year’s resolution tips include: • Checking your tire pressure at least once a month. Consult the ve-
hicle’s owner’s manual or placard on the driver’s door to determine proper tire pressure. Tire pressure should be checked when the tires are cold. • Rotating your tires regularly promotes even wearing of tread. Tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. • Checking your alignment at least once a year or sooner, especially if the vehicle is pulling to one side. This will

help avoid uneven wear on tire tread. Tire balance should also be monitored. • Replacing the tire before the tread wears down below 2/32 of an inch. A quick and easy tread test involves placing a penny into the grooves of the tire. If Lincoln’s head is completely visible, the tires should be replaced. Avoid Expensive Energy Bills with This Hot New Housing Trend By d-mars.com News Provider
I
magine being able to heat your home with no more energy than used by a hair dryer turned on low, or even going off the grid altogether. Thanks to smaller, carefully planned home designs, coupled with a superior insulation system, super energy-efficient small homes are growing in popularity. Once perceived as the housing of commune-living hippies in the 1960s, today’s small homes feature exceptional design and comfort. Although the average size of U.S. homes increased 57 percent in the past 40 years, more Americans are becoming interested in smaller homes designed to make the most of each square foot, rather than just building bigger. This trend is seen in the growing popularity of TV shows like “Tiny House Nation,” and dozens of websites and blogs devoted to the small house movement. Although there is no formal definition for these smaller abodes, The Tiny House Community website considers a home to be “small” if it is under 1,000 square feet, and “tiny” if less than 400
square feet. At the extreme, some “tiny houses” are less than 100 square feet — about the size of a camper. The secret to living smaller is optimizing the available space, and creating areas that are cozy instead of cramped. One key is making use of otherwise wasted space, such as adding storage under beds or under staircases, and doing away with non-critical features like the great rooms that sit unused in many homes. Small home designers are able to create a sense of openness and light in the small footprint by including numerous windows or mirrors, as well as other design touches
such as lofts and curved ceilings. In essence, in the smaller spaces there is clear purpose for every element in the home. “Attention to the small gives character to the whole,” says acclaimed architect and simple-living proponent, Sarah Susanka. Susanka is author of the book, “The Not So Big House.” For many small home enthusiasts, the appeal is not only a simpler life in a smaller, un-cluttered home, but also saving money and living green by consuming much less energy. All else being equal, it takes less energy to heat and cool a smaller home than a larger one,
Experience Our World of Advertising, Marketing, Media and Communication
but many small homes also use an advanced building technique for high energy efficiency and quick construction — structural insulated panel (SIPs). “SIP panel walls and roofs combine the insulation and structure in one unit,” says Joe Pasma, technical manager for Premier SIPs, North America’s largest SIP panel manufacturer. “The end result is much lower air leakage and continuous insulation, which helps reduce heating and cooling energy use up to 60 percent compared to other building methods — whether in a tiny house or a standard-sized one.” As visually interesting home designs are important to many small home dwellers, Pasma notes that SIP panels can be used in virtually any architectural style. An increasing number of builders in the U.S. specialize in tiny house designs, with many of them offering SIP panel homes. These range from do-it-yourself kit homes up to fully personalized homes. Getting started is simple explains Patrick Sughrue, president of Artisan Tiny House in Vancouver, Washington. “We use a step-by-step process in which we take one of our templates that’s close to what you want and customize it to make it yours.” – BPT

5 Ways to Increase Your Productivity and Turn ‘Do’ to ‘Done’ By d-mars.com News Provider
T
ake a look at your to-do list and ask yourself how many things on the list can be finished when you get around to them. Now how many things on that list need to be done as soon as possible or should have been finished yesterday? Chances are the second list is longer. These days you’re constantly being asked to do more with less — less money, fewer resources, and of course, less time. Whether your goal is to succeed in your schedule or merely survive, you can’t do either unless you can increase your efficiency and your productivity. To help you in either regard, here are five ways you can become more efficient and productive. By following these tips, you’ll be able to look at your list in a whole new light and transform those past due items into done. • Start with the most important task first. Look at your to-do list every morning and ask yourself, “What’s the most important item on my list?” Once you have that answer, start with that task. Your most important task is often
the hardest - that’s just how life works and finishing it will lift your spirits and make you more productive. • Make the most of tech on the go. The latest technology makes it easier than ever to organize your tasks on the run. Windows 10 from Microsoft is designed to be compatible with the hardware, software and tech you already own, and updates easily so you never miss a beat. You can also manage multiple passwords across devices with Windows Hello making signing in easy, with just a look or a touch. Add it to a two-in-one with tons of storage like the Toshiba Satellite Fusion or use it while you make the most of the HP Spectre 13 x360’s amazing battery life and you’ll have the gear to accomplish the tasks at hand anywhere you want. • Embrace single-tasking. When you think of improving your productivity, you assume it has to involve multitasking, but in fact the opposite is true. Embracing a single-tasking philosophy enables you to put all of your attention into one task at a time. That means you’ll finish the project more quickly, and ultimately do a better job than if you only gave it part of your attention. • Make the most of tech when
working from home. Many of your most demanding to-do items come from the office, so it’s good to know there are technology options available to increase your productivity from anywhere. The super-slim Lenovo Yoga 900 is perfect for working on the go, and the businessready Dell XPS 13 can ensure your home office stays as secure as your conventional one. Finally, the ASUS Transformer Book T100HA comes with Microsoft Office Mobile preloaded so you can enjoy your favorite features wherever you need them. • Cut the cord. This one will be painful at first, but you’ll be amazed by the results. If your work keeps you at a com-

puter most of the day, don’t be afraid to disconnect from the Internet so you can focus on your work and not get stuck browsing your favorite time-wasting websites. If you have to stay online for your job, research software options that allow you to block certain websites from opening on your work computer. Whether it’s at work or at play, the demands of your to-do list can be daunting. Because you can’t count on more time suddenly appearing, you have to find other ways to finish your tasks in the time allotted. Apply the tips listed above and that to-do list won’t seem so daunting and you may even rediscover a little free time for yourself. – BPT

Helping Veterans Earn Training for FullTime Civilian Careers By d-mars.com News Provider
T
oday, veterans are returning to civilian life by the tens of thousands, eager to apply their highly refined talents in sustainable careers. Yet, national employment numbers reflect the challenges veterans face in pursuit of this goal. The September Bureau of Labor Statistcs unemployment rate for Gulf War Era II veterans decreased to 5 percent, which is the same for both men and women. Overall unemployment for all Veterans over 18 years old is at 4.3 percent (4.1 percent for men, and 5.9 percent for women). Overall unemployment stands at 5.1 percent. The only segment where veteran unemployment is worse than general population unemployment is women veterans (5.9 percent vs 5 percent). The improvement in veteran unemployment suggests veteran hiring programs implemented by companies such as Prudential are having a real impact helping service members transition to civilian employment. Throughout its long history, Prudential has had a deep appreciation for the service and sacrifices of veterans. In 2010, the company established The Office of Veterans Initiatives to help prepare military service
members and their spouses for meaningful careers. Headed by Chuck Sevola, a former communications officer in the U.S. Army and staffed by veterans, Veterans Initiatives works to strengthen relationships with corporations, nonprofit organizations and government agencies so they can collectively provide educational and employment opportunities to veterans and their families. “Veterans bring significant value to the workforce, including practiced leadership skills, discipline, the ability to perform in stressful situations, and a solid work ethic,” says Sevola. “We recognize the sacrifices made every day by these men and women and believe their experience and leadership can only make our company stronger.” Veterans Initiatives established VETalent, a partnership between Prudential and Workforce Opportunity Services, a nonprofit organization that helps companies build strong talent pipelines through unique work-study programs. VETalent, a nine-month work-study program, prepares veterans and spouses of active duty service members for careers in information technology, sales and business operations. Participants receive extensive job training and classroom work followed by on-the-job training to qualify for fulltime career opportunities with Pruden-
tial or other companies. When the VETalent members graduate from the program, they work as full-time consultants for Prudential, after which time they become eligible for full-time employment offers from the company. To date, Prudential has hired 88 veterans and/or spouses from VETalent and another 192 have been hired by other companies. In addition, another 40 veterans and/or military spouses are in active programs at Prudential and other 82 are in programs with other companies, helping to earn the company the recognition of “Top 100 Military Friendly Employers” and “Best for Vets” for six consecutive years. Since its inception in Newark, New Jersey in 2010, VETalent has expanded to additional Prudential sites in Dubuque, Iowa with Northeast Iowa Community Col-
