Free to Be

I

Minister Eugenie Doualla Contributing Writer

n 2 Corinthians 3:18, we read that we must come with unveiled face in order to receive the benefit God wants us to have from the new covenant.

We enter into a personal relationship that will ultimately change us into His image when we: •  Stop being religious and legalistic. •  Just come to Jesus. •  Lay aside all our works, and begin to see Him. •  Allow Him to remove the veil from our eyes. More than anything else, we need His presence. He is the only one who can do anything for us that will be permanent. Unfortunately, many people are frustrated, and they want to spend time with God but feel uncomfortable. Many people don’t know what to do during this time. Others have expressed that they never sense God’s presence. They find prayer and fellowship to be a dry experience. I

Prayer for Today: Father, thank You for Your grace. Help us to embrace it fully and find freedom from the things that hinder us to have happiness in Jesus. Lord, please gives us more of You as we journey with You. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen. believe one of the reasons this happens is that people live under the law, instead of under grace. Grace is not the freedom to sin. Grace is the power to live a holy life. However, grace also sees when our hearts are right towards God, and even though our performance may not be perfect, grace forgives and helps us to get from where we are to where we need to be. The law condemns. Grace removes the condemnation and sets us free—free

from and free to. Free from condemnation, self-hatred, self-rejection, fear of God, and many other negative traps. And free to serve God without pressure, free to use the life and energy we are given to behave better, rather than to fight condemnation. When we spend time with God, we do not need to try to be or sound “religious,” but we can just be ourselves. Talk to Him, and listen to hear what He will speak to your heart. Read His Word

and other Christian books that will edify and help you grow as a believer in Jesus Christ. Do not make your time with Him complicated. Keep it simple, and trust Him to teach you in all areas of life. In my daily reading of God’s Word, I also refer to the teachings and writings of other ministers. This submission was inspired by Joyce Meyer (www.joycemeyer.org).

Black Music Month!

Sax In The City Featuring Marion Meadows, Dean James, and Vandell Andrew Comes To Houston By Vivian Fullerlove Contributing Writer

S

ax in the City heats things up all summer long in celebration of Black Music Month! Marion Meadows, Dean James, and Vandell Andrew bring their sultry, saxophone stylings to H-Town in July! A pillar of the contemporary jazz format, Meadows’ passion for music led him down an eclectic musical path. During his college years, he played in a number of bands including disco, R&B, and various jazz ensembles. “I had a lot of side jobs in college, and I have always said I received my real graduate degree playing clubs,” says Meadows, who perfected his craft studying with Sonny Fortune, Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman, and Eddie Daniels. “Not long after I finished school, drummer Norman Connors recorded one of my songs, “Invitation” and then asked me to join his band. I later pro-

duced his Passion album with my colleague Jacques Burvick (Aquarium Dream). Things just fell into place, and as they say, ‘the rest is history,’” Meadows expresses. Meadows first hit the airwaves in 1991 with “For Lovers Only,” but his career really began one day in the late 80s at New

York’s Grand Central Station. He has toured and recorded with such artists as Brook Benton, Eartha Kitt, Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carne, The Temptations, Michael Bolton, Angela Bofill, Will Downing, Bob Baldwin, Chuck Loeb, John Lee, Marcus Anderson, Mindi Abair, Paul Taylor, Boney James, and many others. Joining Meadows is soulful saxophonist Dean James, who has become one of the most versatile saxophonists of the Smooth Jazz genre. Having released 4 CDs as a solo artist, James is currently embarking on a new project set to release later this year. As James continues to demonstrate his soulful performances on both alto and soprano saxophones, his 5th solo project, GROOVYSAX, introduces a very unique blend of Smooth Jazz, R&B, Latin, and Popular music that sets him apart with his own signature style and sound. Opening the show will be Smooth Jazz groove man, Vandell Andrew. Andrew has been blazing stages across the U.S. and overseas with his sensual melodies, speaker

shattering grooves, and a fresh sound that is all his own. Hailing from the “birth place of jazz,” the New Orleans native relocated to Dallas, Texas, following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Since that time, Andrew has showed no signs of slowing down. Presented by the Brio Executive Group, co-founded by businessmen Mario Clark and Marcus Jordan, Sax in the City marks the return of a time when a night of Smooth Jazz was more than entertainment but a real music experience. Clark explains, “We think that by bridging the gap between what Jazz used to be to what it is now and where it’s going, we can propel the genre even further as we move forward and re-introduce Smooth Jazz across the country!” Sax in the City takes place on Saturday, July 23rd at the Houston Hobby Center located at 800 Bagby Street, Suite 300, Houston, TX, 77002. Showtimes are 5:00 PM and 8:30 PM. Tickets are on sale now at www.thehobbycenter.org or charge by phone at 713-315-2525.

have spent the past 20 months volunteering on several political campaigns. In so many ways, I feel I have grown from these experiences. Not only has my circle of acquaintances enlarged as well as my understanding of the boundaries of various entities, but I have learned much of the unwritten history of the east/northeast side of Harris County. As a young adult, I learned that unless you know where you came from, you were never going to grow. You cannot improve unless you know what you value. Unfortunately, over the past decade, our children have spent much more time learning to pass tests than they have about history or building relationships. I met so many individuals along the campaign trail who have served in various levels of law enforcement. I have also met many individuals who no longer trust or support those who carry a badge. Individuals who learned from the mistakes of others and fought battles put on them by society have been the most prevalent group I met. The second group would be those who truly desire that all people would be judged on their character and nothing else. Both of these groups of people share the

desire that people allow healing to happen so that Houston can become not just the most diverse city in the nation, but the most reconciled city as well. If we could get beyond our differences, we would find there are many more similarities. Once we lose that “wall” that we build due to perceived differences, we begin to laugh together, weep together, dream together, and learn to love unconditionally. Some of you have read articles of mine before where I share about my amazing pastor, Rudy Rasmus. He has quite a reputation of being someone who stands up for the marginalized, loves everyone, and has an extensive vocabulary.

What Is Juneteenth? By d-mars.com News Provider

M

any of us know the meaning of holidays celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. and other history changers, but what do we really know about Juneteenth? The month of June we celebrate Juneteenth. d-mars.com takes pride in celebrating our history throughout the year, but this month is especially reserved for Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19, dating back to 1865, the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. Why the delay? The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to

the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. In the early years, little interest existed outside the African-American community in participation in the celebrations. In some cases, there was outwardly exhibited resistance by barring the use of public property for the festivities. Most of the festivities found themselves out in rural areas around rivers and creeks that could provide for additional activities. Often the church grounds was the site for Juneteenth activities. There are accounts of Juneteenth activities being interrupted and halted by white landowners demanding that their laborers return to work. However, it seems most allowed their workers the day off and some even made donations of food and money. For decades these annual celebrations flourished, growing continuously with each passing year.

Over the course of this campaign season, more than one person told me that I reminded them of him. And that was before they knew I attend St John’s Downtown with him. I am beginning to believe those who tell us that if you want to succeed, you need to associate with successful people, or if you want to be good at something, you must practice it. Now that my season of working at a local entertainment arena has ended, I’ve started driving with a local ride-share company. With each passenger who has entered my car, I have laughed, shared little tidbits about the city I call home. It is amazing how

many individuals who have rode with me have shared at the end of the trip how my words encouraged them. I have had older adults share that it felt good to just have someone talk with them instead of treating them as if they should stay home. Visitors to the city have shared that people here are so friendly. We all have the desire to enjoy life, and I believe we also have the desire to make others feel special. It is time that we intentionally live with a spirit of excellence in reaching out and making everyone feel accepted and loved. Until next time, remember, I love you, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Juneteenth Celebration History

the struggle for racial equality, many linked these struggles to the historical struggles of their ancestors. This was evidenced by student demonstrators involved in the Atlanta civil rights campaign in the early 1960s.

Economic and cultural forces provided for a decline in Juneteenth activities and participants beginning in the early 1900’s. Classroom and textbook education in lieu of traditional home and family-taught practices stifled the interest of the youth due to less emphasis and detail on the activities of former slaves. Classroom text books proclaimed Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863, as the date signaling the ending of slavery – and little or nothing on the impact of General Granger’s arrival on June 19. The Depression forced many people off the farms and into the cities to find work. In these urban environments, employers were less eager to grant leaves to celebrate this date. Thus, unless June 19 fell on a weekend or holiday, there were very few participants available. July 4 was the already established Independence holiday and a rise in patriotism steered more toward this celebration. The Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s yielded both positive and negative results for the Juneteenth celebrations. While it pulled many of the African-American youth away and into

Juneteenth Official State Holiday On January 1, 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday through the efforts of Al Edwards, an African-American state legislator. The successful passage of this bill marked Juneteenth as the first emancipation celebration granted official state recognition.

Juneteenth Today Today, Juneteenth is enjoying a phenomenal growth rate within communities and organizations throughout the country. Juneteenth today, celebrates African-American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous selfdevelopment and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten. For more on Juneteenth, please visit www.juneteenth.com. Source: Juneteenth.com

In Jesus’ Name

Art McElroy

T

here are many reasons why people pray. In regards to prayer, Christians have been taught one thing; end prayer with, “In Jesus’ Name!” Have you ever wondered why? Is there instructional scripture that indicates that after prayer we say, “In Jesus’ name?” Is prayer not effective if this statement is not made, or is it about the phrase at all? I am not suggesting that it is right or wrong. Prayer is personal; between a Christian and God. However, we must make ourselves aware of its position, so that our communication with God is perfect. Certain scriptures give instruction as to how to pray. Matthew 6:9-13, where Jesus teaches His apostles “The Our Father” and in Philippians 4:6-7, Paul teaches that we should not be anxious for anything. Note neither ends with, “In Jesus name.” However, there are scriptures that

make reference to our subject. Such as: •  John 14:13-14: “whatever you ask in My name … I will do ... If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” This scripture implies that Christians state “In the name of Jesus,” as part of prayer. Is this a literal interpretation, or could it have other considerations? To answer this question, let’s take a look at scriptures that use, “In my name.” Deuteronomy 18:18-20 “whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name” 1 Samuel 25:4-6 “and David said, “Go to Nabal, and greet him in my name. …they spoke to Nabal …in the name of David.” David is giving men the authority to speak on his behalf. It was as if David were there himself. The men did not say, “We say this in the name of David” because they were recognized as ambassadors of David. Like the men who spoke to Nabal, our position as ambassador is realized in 2 Corinthians 5:20-21, “we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf...” As Christians, we have authority to speak on Jesus’ behalf. When we speak, it is as though Jesus Himself is speaking. It is the same with prayer. We are am-

bassadors of Christ. God wants us to invoke our authority in Christ when we pray. In Matthew 28:18-20 we see the authority that Jesus has given us. “Authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go … in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...” Here, Jesus gives us authority to speak on behalf of the Father, Him-

self, and Holy Spirit. In John 16:13-15 concerning the Holy Spirit, Jesus says, “…, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you ... He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you...” In review, let’s note the following: 1.  Jesus wants us to speak in His name when we approach the Father. 2.  It may not be a literal interpretation of the use of the phrase, “In Jesus’ Name” at the end of our prayers. It could be to invoke the authority given to us. 3.  Jesus has given us the authority in heaven and earth to speak on His behalf. 4.  We are His ambassadors when we speak to God and others. 5.  We are only to speak the word given to us by the Holy Spirit. 6.  If we speak as ambassadors, God will answer our prayers. The next time you pray, consider your position as ambassador, and see how your prayer is different. I guarantee that you will never present yourself to God the same way again. First Fruits Is Making Children and Youth Smile Through Parties By d-mars.com News Provider

an you remember the joy that you had as a child when you had a birthday party? Remember all the laughter and happiness that it brought you? Unfortunately, there are many children and youth in our community who cannot and do not enjoy a celebration on this special day or other momentous occasions. Though parents want the best for their children, life happens, and unfortunate circumstances can occur. Believe it or not, many parents have to choose between keeping the lights on or parties and gifts for their children. If you think a party is not a need, think again. First Fruits, founded by Stacey Broussard in 2015, knows that a party to a young person is a definite need. First Fruits is a vital and vibrant organization dedicated to bringing young people and parents joy and happiness by providing parties and celebrations. Broussard is a wife and mother, who just enjoys throwing parties. Parties are her passion and now her purpose. This passion for parties has extended to the community, and First Fruits is spreading love and joy to young people, helping parents give their children a celebration on their special day. Broussard sharing this passion and talent to those in our community is something different, unique, and necessary. A party truly means a lot to a child, and it is especially important to the parents who may not have the extra income to provide this for their child. Broussard now shares her love of giving parties with other individuals, and she has partnered with churches and organizations to give children and young people in our community a special day that they will never

forget. Broussard says, “First Fruits is truly a blessing. I really am so full of joy knowing that something as simple as a party can have a lasting positive impact on a child and parent. This organization encourages, letting families know that we care.” Broussard is the founder, CEO, and board chair of First Fruits, but she does not do this work alone. First Fruits has a board of selfless individuals just as passionate as she is about giving back to families. The board members are: •  Vice President of Operations, Sharonda Wright •  Vice President of Fundraising, Tiffany Green •  Secretary, Tara Taheri •  Treasurer, Yavaunda White •  Marketing, Cheryl Harris Diggs To find out more about First Fruits, please visit them on the web at firstfruitshope.webs.com or contact them via email at firstfruitshope@gmail. com.

ishop James Dixon is not only the well-respected pastor of Community of Faith, but a human rights activist, empowerment leader, inspiring communicator, and an advocate for our children. In today’s society, advocating for the betterment of our children is a top priority. When it comes to protecting, valuing, and investing in our children, Bishop Dixon walks the walk, practicing what he preaches and leads by example. Loving Kids, a partnership with the renowned Dr. Ed Young, his mentor, proves once again why Bishop Dixon is one of the most talked about and inspiring when it comes to our children and the next generation. Bishop Dixon says, “Being an advocate for our children is my calling! The only chance we have to change the future is through what we invest in children. That is why we started Good Gang USA in 1994, and it’s still going strong today.” Bishop Dixon recalls bringing his children to church, mentoring and motivating them. “When you analyze it, our world is not very kind to children. They are the most vulnerable among us. They can’t speak for themselves. They can’t defend themselves from the cruelties that afflict them. They are victims of

evil people and adverse policies, and they inherit all the bad decisions of adults who come before them,” Bishop Dixon expresses. Bishop Dixon believes in our children, as they are the future, seeing the enormous potential in them. Loving Kids is a great initiative that will foster growth and expose our kids to their God-given potential, targeting schools in key areas.

Loving Kids has already received great support from the community and will remind Houston that greatness can come from Acres Homes and already has. Houston’s Mayor, the Honorable Sylvester Turner spoke at the Loving Kids launch event, and he is a prime example of greatness from the Acres Homes community. Q&A: With Bishop James Dixon Talk about the Loving Kids initiative. Most great visions are birthed due to crisis. Loving Kids is the result of the pervasive education gap that exists among children in inner city urban America and their peers who are raised in middle and upper class suburbia. Over a year ago, Dr. Young visited me to see what we were doing and to see what he could do to help. I was privileged to give him a tour through Acres Homes, and he saw where our members live. He also saw where we spend time seeking to minister to people who are trapped in cycles of generational poverty, where crime rates are higher, public safety is deficient, and hopelessness is on people’s faces, even children. We prayed and planned with our staff and leaders working together for over a year, and that labor gave birth to Loving Kids!

You have partnered with Dr. Ed Young on this initiative. Talk about your respect for Dr. Young as your mentor. Dr. Ed Young is an amazing human being! When we met 33 years ago, I had just began pastoring our church. I was only 19 when we met and had been pastoring for 1 year. The first time I shook his hand was at the introduction through Dr. C.L. Jackson, another senior pastor who mentored me. But the next time we met was after a championship boxing match, we ran into each other. He allowed me to bring 70 members of our church to Second Baptist for a tour of their campus, and it changed our church! Dr. Young became an inspiring mentor for me then, and he remains to be today. How many men at his age and stage are still building and expanding? Now, he is partnering to launch Loving Kids with me. At a time when most would be preparing to land the plane, he is still looking to fly even higher to make a greater difference.

Talk about why your partnership with Dr. Young on this Loving Kids partnership is ordained by God. Houston has a new Dynamic Duo on behalf of children and community change! To hear and see Bishop Dixon and Dr. Ed Young on the same platform is an amazing and powerful picture of unity that is long overdue. This is definitely a God thing. I am humbled beyond words that He has chosen me and orchestrated this unique relationship and partnership that began with The Community of Faith and Second Baptist. When you’ve been working as passionately as we have to make a difference in the community, sometimes you get tired. Having Dr. Young and Second Baptist to come over to join us in a real and sincere way is refreshing and refueling. I believe that he saw our sincerity, our longevity and integrity. I have never made what we do to be about personal gain. We have just tried to serve. It is humbling and encouraging when someone like an Ed Young says “I want to come along side and work with you.” I have had many, but this will be a true highlight of my ministry. This partnership is larger than two churches, and other pastors should be interested in joining this movement. I am so thankful to my brother and friend in ministry, Dr. Edwin Davis of Galilee Baptist Church in Acres Homes. He readily came on board. His church has always been there for our community, and his leadership is impeccable!

This is not your first initiative for the young people. Talk about where your passion for young people came from. My passion for youth came from

being raised by parents and church people who poured themselves into us when we were children. I remember the time my father and mother spent running us to school, sports practices, guitar, and every other lesson. But we were always at church. I also remember the ladies who were there helping to pick up and drop off kids who needed rides, who served hot dogs on Saturdays and who taught us to respect ourselves and others. I remember the little league football coaches who poured into us. All these people were volunteers who gave time and spent their own resources to help shape our lives. So it began with them. I don’t understand how so many adults can forget that, and now they are too busy and some too self-centered to give to these children what was given to us. My passion also comes from being close enough to see the needs of children. I started Good Gang because I was sick of burying kids killed over drugs and gang wars. When you watch society write kids off because they are from certain neighborhoods and they are treated like a liability rather than an asset, it disturbs your spirit.

What are the goals of Loving Kids? We intend for the kids and schools we adopt to become models of what happens when every kid is given what they need to reach their God-given potential. We expect to see them make great progress comprehensively, including academically, artistically, and socially. We are going to help address discipline and life choices, which will decrease the school to prison pipeline. We will inspire them to aim higher, going beyond high school, on to college and beyond.

Talk about the schools specifically chosen. Inner city schools in Houston and across America are underfunded, under staffed, and under supported. So why is there a surprise when these schools under perform? Highland Heights, Osborne, and Goodman Elementary Schools are all located on the fringes of Acres Homes. By the way, we applaud the principals of these schools, Mrs. Geraldine Cox-Highland Heights, Mrs. Jacqueline ParnellOsborne, and Ms. Camelia Chester-Goodman. Over 80% of the students in these schools qualify for free lunch due to family economics. This is also the case for all the schools in the area. We are only beginning with three due to manpower, but eventually we plan to adopt more schools including middle and high schools.

Loving Kids will also support principals and teachers. How will they receive support? Loving Kids is a volunteer driven program. We have already recruited several hundred persons, and we are looking for more. Our aim is for every kid to have a personal mentor. We will also provide schools with tutors and support services for principals and teachers. Many schools do not have librarians or music teachers and other necessary staff. Due to budget deficiencies, principals have to choose between a school nurse or a librarian. As an inner city pastor, I understand the difficulty of needing ministry staff and services and having to make ends meet. I am sensitive to the miracles these principals have to work to give their students the best chances to succeed. The Loving Kids Volunteer Army will serve a great need!

Harriet Tubman on the Twenty Dollar Bill

T

Dr. Gregg Patrick Contributing Writer

he election of Barrack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States was thought by many to be a milestone never to be eclipsed by another African-American. However, as incredible as it may seem, this milestone has been exceeded. Slave runner and genuine historical icon, Harriet Tubman, has been recently selected by the U.S. Treasury to dawn the front of the twenty dollar bill. The honor of being the face on any U.S. monetary bill, is usually reserved for United States Presidents

and U.S. Founding Fathers of our nation. However, the long drought has been broken by the selection of an African-American woman to be the face of the most widely used monetary instrument in our country, the twenty

dollar bill. There is no arguing that Harriet Tubman was a heroic woman, and the determination and selflessness of this heroic woman can be seen in her pictures. The conviction in her eyes and

the determination on her rugged face instantly transports one into her dangerous world of slave-running. Very soon, every time you make a transaction at ATM machine, you will see her face that will forever represent strength and passion towards liberty, freedom, and justice for all her people. For many years to come, she will be seen daily by millions as they transact business in cash. Our children’s children will know her amazing story of risk, resistance, and deliverance. Near her death, Harriet Tubman said, “I freed a thousand slaves; (but) I could have freed a thousand more, if only they knew they were slaves.” Her prophetic words of enlightenment are relative even today. This is a day for all Americans to be proud!

Dr. Gregg Patrick is the Senior Pastor of The Bridge, Southwest Community Church, located at 14880 Bellaire Blvd., Houston, TX 77083.

What boxer has inspired you?

order to be great, you have to do what other people are typically not willing to do. While they sleep, you are out working hard. Every year TBE brings Houstonians and those in surrounding areas the best, as their Summer Celebration event is the largest African-American consumer tradeshow and festival in the South. The Summer Celebration attracts 20,000 attendees from Texas and surrounding areas as well as over 200 vendors and countless corporate sponsors. This year did not disappoint and marked 13 years of this annual celebration. TBE’s Summer Celebration has proven once again that it is a Houston tradition that is still strong and very much necessary and relevant to the city. Texas Black Expo of course gives you entertainment, but supporting our local businesses and the community is of the utmost importance to this Houston organization. Founded in 2007 by President Jerome D. Love and Vice President Shannon Cormier, Ph.D., TBE is a nonprofit organization, and their annual Summer Celebration is one of the many events and initiatives they host throughout the year to help the community prosper, providing our businesses with a platform to help them grow their business. TBE has a proven and wellrespected track record for stimulating growth and development within urban communities by strengthening businesses, inspiring youth, and building better lives. In TBE form, the Summer Celebration had none other than Mayor Sylvester Turner to help kickoff this year’s event. The annual celebration opened with a press conference and cocktail reception at the luxurious Skyline Lounge at Hilton Americas Hotel. Among the kickoff attendees were elected officials, top business leaders, and local chapters from 100 Black Men, National Black MBA Association, and other established professional organizations. “I commend Texas Black Expo for connecting small businesses with events and opportunities to help them grow,” said Mayor Turner. This 4-day experience included a lineup of celebrity guests LeToya Luckett and Carl Anthony Payne and entertainers Case, Force M.D.’s, and Chubb Rock. Also included were influential speakers, business development seminars, health and wellness exhibits, hair shows, women’s forums, concert performances, and more. The City of Houston, H-E-B, UTHealth, Blue Cross-Blue Shield, and KPRC Channel 2 were sponsors of the TBE 2016 Summer Celebration. “We are thankful for all our sponsors, board members, and vendors who worked to make this another successful

year,” says founder Jerome Love. This year marked 13 years of TBE’s continued efforts to stimulate growth and development in our community. For over a decade the TBE has been going strong, and this year was proof of why the TBE will continue to always be one of the most anticipated and highly attended events in the South. For more

Stepping into Your Greatness By Tammi Durden

H

Contributing Writer

ave you ever felt defeated and thought you plateaued and could not progress any further in life? If you haven’t, I have. You then find yourself standing at a fork in the road, and it is decision time. Do we choose to settle and continue on the path of mediocrity, or do we take the road less traveled and dare to journey to the next dimension in life? Of course, most of us can attest to having lived in the land of mediocrity, but deep inside we knew there had to be more. Even when you try to subdue this constant urge for more, there is a nagging desire to tap into your inner greatness. Yes, that’s right…you have an inner greatness that is just screaming to be released. We were all created and gifted with a degree of greatness that can be cultivated into so much more if we yield attention and effort to it. How do you step into your greatness? Pay close attention as I share three keys to stepping into your greatness.

Know Your WHY One of the most powerful forces to stepping into your greatness is knowing your WHY. This is the true mo-

tivation that thrusts you forward in spite of adversity. In the tough times you’ve got to know WHY you are here and WHY it is imperative for you to progress to the next dimension in life. Keeping your WHY at the forefront of your attention will serve as a constant reminder and incentive to keep pushing. What is your WHY? Whatever it is, find it, and grab hold tight.

Cultivate Your Mind In order to step into your greatness, it is crucial to cultivate a winner’s mindset. Everything originates in the mind. Your thinking drives your actions, therefore you become with you think about. Try thinking outside the box. Begin by ridding your mind of all negative, low-level thinking such as, “I am not good enough” or “I’m not smart enough”. Eliminate those self-limiting beliefs and habits you have developed

What Does That REALLY Mean? By d-mars.com News Provider

d-mars.com is here to inspire, inform, and educate. We love taking you back. We love remembering things of the past. When you reminisce about the past, it can put a smile on your face. How many times have you heard your mom or grandma say, “I have eyes in the back of my head?” We’ve all heard these types of phrases growing up but had no idea what they meant. Below are some familiar and maybe not so familiar phrases and their meanings. You might be surprised at what these phrases really mean.

Phrases and Meanings “What you do in the dark, will come to the light.” Meaning: Dirty deeds, bad acts, and evil things done in secrecy will eventually be known. You will be exposed sooner or later.

“A watched pot will never boil.” Meaning: Something we wait for with impatient attention seems to take forever. “A little bird told me.” Meaning: This is something that you say in order to let someone know that you are not going to tell them who gave you the information being discussed “The pot can’t call the kettle black.” Meaning: The notion that a criticism that a person makes of another could equally well apply to themself. “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.” Meaning: What is good for a man is equally good for a woman; or, what a man can have or do, so can a woman have or do. “Every shuteye ain’t sleep.”

over time and clear the mental clutter. It is essential to renew your mind daily by reading books, engaging in prayer, reciting affirmations, practicing visualization, exercising gratitude, and other mind enhancing activities.

Use What You Have

assessment is to identify the things you are naturally good at or do exceptionally well. Begin by making a list of the following things: •  I enjoy doing… •  I am good at… •  People always compliment me on…

The truth is, we already have everything we need on the inside of us to be successful in life. Yes, that’s correct, we have untapped resources and hidden treasures. You may be thinking you don’t have anything worth using. I beg to differ. One exercise that will help you tremendously with identifying these gifts and talents is getting into a quiet space and doing some soul searching and a gift assessment. Make sure to have a pen and paper on hand. The soul searching is to seek out your inner man to direct you towards your passion. The gift

Once you identify these key areas, work on perfecting them and develop ways to use them to release your greatness and become the best you. Remember, stepping into your greatness is a process. It takes time, effort and focus. You must be willing to embrace change and disrupt the status quo. You owe it to yourself and the world to transition to your rightful place…GREATNESS!

Meaning: One must be careful, because some people who seem not to be paying attention are actually paying attention.

will present themselves.

“The fruit don’t fall too far from the tree.” Meaning: Offspring grow up to be like their parents. “Don’t let your right hand know what your left hand is doing.” Meaning: In Matthew 6:3-4, Jesus is warning us that as close as the left hand is to the right hand, the left hand doesn't need to know what the right hand is doing in secret. This is a proverbial expression, signifying that the action should be done as secretly as possible. Performing our acts of charity in secret is pleasing to God. God sees the act, however secret it may be, and will openly reward it. If the reward is not granted in this life, it will be in the life to come. “A hit dog will holler.” Meaning: This means a guilty person

Good to Great Christianity

J

By Pastor Ogletree Contributing Writer

im Collins’s groundbreaking work “Good to Great,” studied elite companies that made the leap to great results that were sustained over a period of 15 years. Some principles in his book are transferable to churches and individual lives. I believe the Christian life fits well in the “Good to Great” discussion. The title alone speaks of purpose, progress, and perseverance. The pursuit of great is not something to be shunned or condemned. It is not a sin or inherently fleshly to pursue greatness unless one seeks such with the wrong motivation. Having the right motivation is the recipe to a righteous or unrighteous result when one pursues greatness. In the Bible, Jesus the Christ revealed to His disciples an expectation

of greatness. In the 14th chapter of John, while instructing and encouraging His disciples for His departure, He drops the idea of greatness on them in verse 12. “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father” (NIV). Jesus sets the target of greater before them. I’m sure they would have been satisfied with doing what He had been doing, but He raised their bar for results. They were to expect greater, meaning something larger or more because of the promised presence of the Holy Spirit. I believe that greater is for us today. We are to expect and pursue what is great for our lives, our families, our ministries, and our communities. We need to get “greater” in our spirits. In his book, Jim Collins discloses the major obstacle to the pursuit: “Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don’t have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don’t have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good

life.” This is true about the Christian life! We have too many believers settling for being a good Christian, father, mother, member, etc. Jesus the Christ taught a progressive life of faith. He told a crowd of people who were intimidated by the Scribes and Pharisees their righteousness had to surpass their righteousness (Matthew 5:20). He told the rich young ruler that even though he had kept the commandment, he still lacked one thing (Mark 10:21). He commanded the disciples to love on a higher level: “as I have loved you”

(John 13:34). There is no room for complacency or being satisfied with one’s present level of faith, commitment or service as a Christian. One should use the Word of God to evaluate where they are in these areas, pray for a progressive attitude, set greater goals, and lean on the Holy Spirit to move beyond good to great. Go for it! John D. Ogletree, Jr. is the Senior Pastor and Founder of First Metropolitan Church located at 8870 West Sam Houston Parkway N., Houston, TX 77040.
