There is nothing wrong with success, but it’s great when you pay it forward to your community. Are you giving back to your community? I want to challenge you to use your gifts and talents to better your community. d-mars.com shines the spotlight on Jimmy Anthony and Kevin Davis, co-owners of J&K Concrete Services. id you know that Mexicans are the second happiest people on Earth, second to only Costa Ricans? Our tour guide Tony told us that … Mexico City is a bustling city with a lot of people, all moving quickly and with purpose, but still disarming enough for the average traveler to feel at ease. Mexico City is culturally rich and its center is best explored by foot – just taking in all the sounds, sights and vibes. The weather during our early August stay was quite pleasant (aside from the few rain showers) and temperatures were around mid-60s. It was great to explore without the sweltering heat. There’s a lot to do and see in Mexico’s capital city, so come ready to explore! Keep reading to check out our favorite things about Mexico City. Check out our blog to see more from our Mexico City vacation: 2girlswhotravel.com

5 Things We Loved About Mexico City 1. Architecture: There are far too many awesome structures in Mexico City to name. Seriously. From the beautifully constructed cathedrals to the masterfully-designed residences in the city’s neighborhoods, Mexico City is a photographer’s dream. In addition, the city is splashed with vibrant colors that illuminate in the day and night. Have your cameras ready!

2. Pyramids: Even though the pyramids of Teotihuacan are about 30 miles from Mexico City, we had to include them in our faves list. Not only did we enjoy learning the history of the pyramids, the views from atop were breathtaking. If you’re in Mexico City, it’s a must you book a tour to Teotihuacan to see them for yourself. It’s one of the most popular tours by tourists to Mexico and for good reason. The line to climb the Pyramid of the Sun had a wait time of more than an hour. Luckily, the Pyramid of the Moon (a short walk away) had no line, however visitors are only allowed to climb to the second level. Both are worth a visit and both have amazing views.

3. Our Hotel: The Grand Hotel Mexico City certainly lived up to its name. There aren’t enough good things to say about the more-thana-century-old hotel located in the heart of downtown. The charm of the bedrooms … the exquisite stained glass ceiling … the real life bird cage … oh, and did we mention 24-hour complimentary champagne? The staff made us feel like celebrities. There’s also a great restaurant (La Terraza) in the hotel that has unparalleled views of the most popular monuments in the city. And with its central location, the hotel was walking distance to most of the attractions.

4. Lower Prices: In Mexico, you can really make your dollars (pesos, rather) stretch. Meals are a bit cheaper and of course we found some awesome deals while shopping from street vendors and people selling items at the pyramids in Teotihuacan. This is when your negotiating skills come in handy. On occasion, you can literally talk people down to half the original price of an item! Note: Most parts of Mexico City only accept the Mexican peso, so be sure to convert your money! 5. Tacos: Authentic Mexican food is of course not the Tex-Mex we Houstonians are accustomed to, but it was tasty nonetheless. And we had our fair share of tacos. But hands-down the best tacos we had in Mexico City were at El Pescadito, a quaint restaurant in the neighborhood of La Condesa. You pick the staples – tortilla and meat of your choice – then they hand them over to you to dress them how you like. Choose from accompaniments such as pickled onions, pico de gallo and sauces that vary from mild to spicy. The shrimp tacos were superb!

What Did I Do to Deserve It?

H

By Art McElroy

Contributing Writer

ave you ever thought what your physical life today and your spiritual life tomorrow would be like if God, in all of His foresight had not chosen you to be a Christian before the foundation of the world? Think about it. Before God said, “Let there be…” in Genesis Chapter 1:3, you were. Ephesians 1:4 reads, “…He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world…” In looking at the word “chose” in Ephesians 1:4, it is derived from the word “choice.” Choice describes the magnitude of God’s power. Choice, a noun, means “The power, right, or liberty to choose.” This makes giving the gift of grace to a people who never knew Him very precious. Gift giving involves the extending and receiving of an item between two or more people. The doctrine of grace

teaches that it is not up to the one who receives that dictates the reason for “the who,” “the when,” or “the why” the gift is given, but it is for the giver to determine. God gives because of one reason and one reason alone…His love. He loves Christ and He loves us. His love for us is the gift of Christ. God made it so that Christians could not participate in the process of grace giving at all. We had no choice in receiving it. Ephesians 2:8 reads, “…by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God...” A Christian has no choice as it relates to his/her salvation. This was done so that as part of God’s conversion process,

the Christian could not say that they had a role in God’s process to save them. This process was established before any of us existed and belongs only to God. It is His to dispense. Romans 9:15-16 reads, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion. So then it is not of him, who wills … but of God who shows mercy.” What a Christian life we would have after realizing that there was no effort required, no chore to do and more importantly, no law to keep. Romans 6:15 tells us that, “…we are not under law, but under grace…”

We are special, specifically chosen to be Christians for this day and time. Think about it, we are the only beings in God’s creation to have had Jesus, the Son of God, die a spiritual death as God placed your sin and my sin on Him, simply because He loved us. Do you know how wonderful it is to be blessed with an opportunity to house the Spirit of God both physically and mentally? What an honor and privilege it is to be a Christian, someone who was birthed out of love and will live forever because of grace. With this gift of grace, we are able through increased knowledge of Jesus Christ, to attain the highest level of Christianity, while in this world. Grace sustains us and as a result, should motivate us to maximize our time on earth with the study of the plan of God and praise of His wondrous works in all of our lives. Grace as a result of God’s love for us, drives us to forgive one’s sins against us, as God has forgiven us for our sins against Him. Faith, hope and love are all ingredients of His grace. So tell me again, what did I do to deserve it? Art McElroy is the founder of The Penuel Group, Inc. Black Outside the Box

I

By Leah Rapley

Contributing Writer

cannot speak for everyone, but when I was younger, I only thought Black people lived in three places: the United States, the Caribbean, and in Africa. This limited understanding of the African diaspora might have been due to failure of a school’s curriculum to adequately represent all citizens or my parents’ limited knowledge of the diaspora. Regardless of who is to blame, there are a number of children (and even adults) who, like myself, had no idea that Black communities existed beyond the three places we defer to when thinking about Blacks on a global scale. Through my travels and research, I have learned that Black communities exist in places other than the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean, and in some cases, they experience similar social challenges as Blacks in the United States and also share common cultural

practices. In light of the Olympics we all recently enjoyed, I will highlight the Black community in Brazil. Brazil holds the largest population of Blacks outside of Africa, estimating to about 90 million (Huffington Post). Its large population of Blacks is mostly due to its location during the slave trade, midway point of the middle passage and the fact that the Portuguese controlled most of the ports receiving slaves. The shortened voyage between West Africa and Brazil allowed the Portuguese to import African slaves to the country with ease. Almost half of all African slaves brought to the New World between 1502-1867 came from Brazil. This was ten times more than the number of African slaves who came to the United States during the entire slave trade. Slaves in Brazil were brought to the country to work on sugar plantations and in the mining industry. The African slaves in Brazil lived in harsher working conditions compared to slaves in the United States. The slaves in the United States were better fed, better housed, and better clothed. In 1888, Brazil abolished slavery, becoming the last country in the Western world to abolish slavery. Although Brazil abolished slavery, the government implemented practices that fortified the culture of social stratification that persisted during slavery. The abolition of slavery left the country with an enormous demographic of Blacks. In an effort to make the country more civilized and demographically ‘white,’ the government invested millions of dollars for Europeans to migrate to the country; the program was called blanqueamiento (whitening). This government initiative resulted in the large mixed-raced population (a ra-

cial ambiguous society) we witness today in Brazil. Brazilians have over 100 different categories they use to classify themselves, creating a complex environment for race relations in the country. In addition to the racial ambiguity within the country, the long-lasting myth of a racial democracy, a term coined in the 1930s by Brazilian sociologist Gilberto Freye embed in society has created a false sense of racial equality and unity. Freye’s theory of Brazil as a racial democracy became a concept that the country prided itself on. However, this false sense of racial unity resulted in a masking of racial inequalities in the country. Because Brazilians chose to ignore race, it became difficult to advocate for marginalized groups and disenfranchised groups because the society

refused to acknowledge that divisions existed under their glorified racial democracy. Today, Brazil remains heavily divided with Afro-Brazilians populating some of the poorest areas in the country, minimal access to quality educational opportunities, and discrimination in the workplace. While movements for racial equality have emerged, the process for passing legislation has proven to be far more difficult than in the United States. Make Home Changes Now to Be Safe as a Senior

hat homeowner, young or old, isn’t interested in affordable and functional home i m p r ov e m e n t s that can be enjoyed for years to come? For seniors 65 and older, well-thoughtout additions or upgrades are necessary for continued comfort and safety. Aging in place, or modifying your home to better accommodate changing needs, can be a major undertaking. Building entrance and access ramps, widening entrances and doorways, adding a first-floor bedroom and bath, and other structural accommodations can be costly. But many other options that add both convenience and safety don’t require major expenditures. Installing grab bars in baths and bedrooms to help with standing and balance, switching to lever-handled doorknobs, lowering electrical switches and raising electrical outlets are among the most frequently completed non-budgetbusting projects, according to the 2015 “Aging in Place Survey Report” from HomeAdvisor. vinyl flooring with slip-resistant surfaces is also a must as falls are among the leading cause of injury to seniors.

Adequate lighting Adequate lighting is an important health and safety consideration for seniors, since vision changes rapidly in our later years. Universal Design guidelines call for increasing both task lighting and general room illumination as we age. Research published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology suggests that natural light may be better for aging eyes than artificial light. The health benefits of natural light are well documented, from boosting your body’s ability to produce vitamin D to helping improve mood and fight seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Natural light also enhances virtually any decor, while helping reduce dependence on artificial light and lowering electricity bills.

Increased ventilation Indoor air quality, according to an EPA study, can be worse than the air outside your home, and many people spend as much as 90 percent of their time indoors. Poor indoor air quality has been linked to

respiratory problems, eye irritation, headaches and even depression. Adding skylights is one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to achieve balanced, glare-free natural light, as well as passive ventilation, in virtually any space. Energy Star-qualified, solar-powered, fresh air skylights, like those from Velux America, bring homeowners the health and functional benefits of enhanced natural light and fresh air at an affordable price. Further enhance the energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal of skylights by adding solar-powered blinds in designer colors and patterns. The skylights, which close automatically in case of rain, and blinds,

Other options that address functionality and living safely, independently and comfortably include home automation systems and Smart Home technologies, security systems, in-home health and activity monitoring to detect falls, and cell phone apps that control thermostats, lighting and other systems in the home. Additional resources are available at the HomeAdvisor “Aging in Place” site. When is the best time to plan for a long life as a senior? Marty Bell, executive director of the National Aging in Place Council, sums it up nicely in the 2015 report: “Too many of us wait until we reach a health or financial crisis to plan for getting older. We plan our careers, we plan to send our children to college, we plan our vacations, but we don’t plan to age. And yet the evidence is there that those who do accept they are going to get older, and make plans in advance, have a considerably better later life.” - BPT

Living Life Intentionally

I

By Charlotte Jackson Contributing Writer

t seems like days are filled with more meetings and activities than ever before, with less time to spend with family and loved ones. When I am asked how am I able to do so much, I am quick to let people know that I am blessed beyond measure, and we just have to learn to be intentional. Being a single mother of three and a grandmother of three, I have been blessed to have been employed at the same place since 1997, living in the same zip code since 1971, and not knowing the word “no.” I cannot imagine not scheduling my time. Please do not think that I have no wiggle room. I intentionally leave several blocks of time on my calendar reserved for no events, but just for hugs and time with loved ones.

At times people think I am a bit odd, taking vacation days to attend conferences and conventions, working with exoffenders and their families, and being active in the community, but I believe if I am passionate about something, it should be showing. There are blocks o f vacation time that I have taken to attend funerals of non-family members, as well as times I have taken off to drive friends to a doc-

tor appointment or helping someone in need. And trust me, there are days that I take off and hang out with great friends, just taking time to enjoy our amazing city. We are in a city with so much culture, history, and art. And did I mention so many great spots to just take in the scenery and enjoy? As far back as junior high, I remember getting together with Joe,

Experience Our World of Advertising, Marketing, Media and Communication

Kristal, and Tim to venture out for ice cream and a few hours of go-kart racing. There have been many hours filled with my long-time friend Billy at Star Pizza and with my children dining at Spaghetti Warehouse, enjoying downtown Houston, and spending the evening in San Leon, Texas, with a waterfront view. Life is more about laughing and learning than anything else. Through the years, I have tried to expose both my biological and “bonus” children to as much of the sites and activities in Houston as possible. There are great memories with friends and family volunteering with the Houston Food Bank and helping veterans. We have planted trees with our local Chamber of Commerce and counted our blessings as we have fed countless homeless and hurting neighbors. Life is about making memories, laughing often and being who we have been called to be. And in the midst of that, we must be intentional to enjoy every moment. Tomorrow is not promised, but your legacy will carry on after you are gone. Be intentional about leaving a legacy that others will fondly reflect upon.

This is not only the place where Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner was born and raised, but this neighborhood located in the northwest section of Houston has a rich history. Acres Homes was once considered the South’s largest unincorporated Black community. Like in many communities around the country, the conditions of the Acres Homes community has declined over the years due to circumstances. Dr. Matthews is a familiar and welcome name in the Acres Home area. A pastor for 13 years, a husband, and a family man, he founded GCMBC to not only be a place of worship, but a haven for the community, with programs to help members of the community succeed, creating a better Acres Homes for the next generation. The recent flooding impacted countless people in Houston and in the surrounding Dr. Matthews areas, and GCMBC was definitely impacted. Though it was devastating to have severe damage to the building, Dr. Matthews, the church leadership, and the congregation are appreciative for J&K’s efforts to help rebuild the church. In December, GCMBC will not only be ready to enter a new place of worship, but with great faith and prayer, this new building will be a relevant resource

With GCMBC set to enter into their new building in December with the help of J&K, Dr. Matthews will be able to continue to take the message of God’s hope and love outside of the four walls, having programs and initiatives that will help the residents of Acres Homes live a life of economic empowerment, helping make significant economic change for Acres Homes. My vision is to bring new life to the Acres Home community. We want to have foot soldiers beyond Sunday, witnessing and bringing change. I am grateful to the Lord for the programs we will be able to offer soon through our Compass for Change Ministry that includes GED programs, second language programs, programs for the elderly, and more.” Long-term, GCMBC wants to set the tone for the future on how church and community are to operate. “The true church of Christ was a church that had the community at heart. We don’t want to be just another church in the community, we want to be the church for the community. J&K are not only believing in the vision, but they are helping the vision come to life, by physically helping us build the church for the Lord,” expresses Dr. Matthews. Dr. Matthews says, “My favorite bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6 which reads, ‘Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not to thy own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.’” He does not see himself as just a pastor, but a man who has a genuine heart for the community. “Coming soon is a church in the heart of the community with the community at heart,” says Dr. Matthews. The Acres Homes community is looking forward to the finished construction of the new building for Greater Commission Missionary Baptist Church. To experience worship with Dr. Ronnie R. In 2014, J&K was founded to lend their expertise in the commercial and industrial construction business in the greater Houston area. From the beginning, they have focused on helping their clients build strong Kevin Davis Jimmy Anthony functional foundations. This mindset combined with their strong core values has given them success in the industry. This for-profit company also has the community in mind. Working with Dr. Matthews and GCMBC is a way for them to help give back to a community that has given so much to them. Davis comes from humble beginnings, and he has seen first-hand what can happen when the community comes together. Davis says, “It takes businesses, churches, community leaders, and really everyone to help create a change for the whole area. It’s a blessing for J&K to work with Dr. Matthews on rebuilding GCMBC, seeing that his vision comes from a pure spirit. We do site work and lay foundation. Foundation for the community is just like concrete. If you have nothing to stand on, you will fall. J&K is proud that we can be a part of this vision to make sure the foundation is solid.” Though J&K is a premiere company in Houston, Anthony and Davis feel that being apart of this project to help rebuild GCMBC allows them to be servants, giving back in a relevant and necessary way to help Acres Homes and GCMBC. “Working with clients like GCMBC, we are able to be more than a for-profit business. The Acres Homes area needs this church. GCMBC is more than a place of worship, but it is a place that goes beyond the church, helping give help to those outside of the church and in the Acres Homes community,” says Anthony. Partnering with J&K provides your project with the experience needed for success. New Study Reveals America’s Laundry Habits By d-mars.com News Provider

W

hether you learned it from your mom or through trial and error during your first year in college, everyone has developed laundry habits that they’d be hard-pressed to break. But how are Americans doing laundry, and are the habits aligned with what cleaning experts recommends. To find out, Maytag partnered with Omnibus Research to survey Americans to uncover some interesting stats around how we approach laundry day. All Stained created equal? More than one-third (35 percent) of Americans say they treat all stains the same, and 42 percent of millennials are guilty of this. In reality, makeup stains, for example, should be treated very differently than grass or mustard stains, so check out this Stain Assist tool for specific instructions. On Switching Loads: Two-thirds of Americans wait to switch to their load to the dryer after the washing cycle finishes. This is why Maytag’s new front load washer features the Fresh Hold® option, which keeps clean clothes smelling fresh in the washer with an internal fan and intermittent tumbling that circulate air through clothes for up to 12 hours after the wash cycle ends. Americans are going overboard with the suds: One-in-four Americans believe that more suds makes for cleaner clothes, but the opposite is actually true – experts say excess suds actually hold onto soils and redeposit them on your laundry. However, those with Maytag’s new front load washer can rely on the Optimal Dose Dispenser, which adds the right amount of detergent when it’s needed. Everyone has their own idea of how to tackle laundry day, but clearly there are a few improvements we can all make. – BPT

5 Ideas for Celebrating Grandparents and Forging Deeper Bonds with Family By d-mars.com News Provider

T

here's no arguing grandparents have special relationships with their grandchildren. Whether they are a couple hours' drive away or a flight across the country, distance doesn't dissolve this bond. National Grandparents Day happens every September, but grandparents and families shouldn't have to limit the celebration to just one day of the year. Here are five fun ideas for staying in touch with family, no matter how near or far they live.

Play games online together Technology can be a wonderful way for different generations to connect long-distance. Beyond phone and video calls, schedule time for grandkids and grandparents to play virtually. There are numerous programs that let players in different locations challenge each other to cards, checkers, chess and more. Interactive sketching apps make drawing or playing tic-tac-toe a breeze from two

locations. A little play can make everyone's day.

Schedule weekly phone calls Making a weekly phone date ensures everyone stays in touch. Long-distance phone calls are easy and budget-friendly when you use an affordable cellphone provider like TracFone. With a new 30day smartphone-only plan with talk, text and data for just $15 a month on the largest 4G LTE networks, you'll have enough money left to spoil the grandkids. And, with no activation or cancellation fees, you can change your no-contract plan as often as your needs change, without penalties. Learn more at www. TracFoneSwitch.com.

Read a book together The written word has a way of bringing people together. Pull up video calling for the whole family to read a goodnight story together. Older kids can select a series of interest with their grandparents and read at the same time, meeting each week via a video or phone for a discussion. Perhaps Grandpa or Grandma

Experience Our World of Advertising, Marketing, Media and Communication

can start by suggesting their childhood favorite, and family members can take turns selecting books from there.

Pen pal exchanges In a digital world, it's rare to receive letters. However, kids love to get mail, so why not start a pen pal exchange? Small kids can color pictures while big kids can practice penmanship and writing skills. Grandparents and grandkids alike will love receiving fun surprises in the mail from each other. Strive to send items once a week so everyone has something to look forward to.

Video performances If you cannot connect in-person but the kids and grandkids want to show off their talents, try a video performance! Whether it's demonstrating the year's dance recital choreography, practicing a new tune on the piano, or acting out a fun play, kids will enjoy showing off and grandparents will feel extra loved. Hit the record feature and send grandparents the file afterward so they can revisit any time they're missing the grandkids. – BPT

Drive Away Distractions to Protect Teens Behind the Wheel By d-mars.com News Provider

T

oday’s teens face more distractions than any generation before. Many don’t recall a time when they were not continuously connected to their friends. Cell phones - which might have been provided as a safety precaution in case Mom or Dad was running late picking them up from school - are now the source of constant messaging, sharing and media consumption. Teens send texts instead of passing notes in class. They share moments with their peers and the world in the form of photos and short videos. Music, food and transportation can arrive on demand, all with the swipe of a finger. Being away from their phones, even for a short period of time, can even cause a form of separation anxiety expressed in the acronym FOMO (fear of missing out). So it should come as no surprise that cell phone use is the offense most commonly associated with distracted driving. However, it’s not the only type of distraction. “A lot of people think they’re better drivers than they actually are, which is why they take unnecessary risks when they’re behind the wheel,” said Randy Petro, chief claims officer for Mercury Insurance. “We see a lot of claims related to distracted driving, including parents turning to scold arguing children, adjusting the infotainment system, and

even taking photos while driving. Your first priority once you start piloting any vehicle should be to focus on the task at hand - driving.” Ten percent of all drivers ages 15 to 19 who were involved in fatal crashes were distracted at the time of the crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA also reports that 660,000 people drive distracted every day. Teens aren’t the only ones who feel the need to be connected - adults are guilty of it, too. Many of the teens who are glued to their smartphones have witnessed their parents answering emails at the dinner

table or have seen them shoot a “quick text” while driving. Teens have grown up learning that this type of behavior is acceptable and maybe even expected. However, there’s a right time and a right place for everything. “The first thing parents need to do is practice what they preach. Teenagers won’t always be receptive to ‘because I say so’ or ‘because I’m the adult,’ especially if they witness their parents actively engaging in a behavior they’re being told is bad,” adds Petro. “We as adults need to set a proper example - after all, we do have the advantage of more life experience.” Parents should set a powerful example

Experience Our World of Advertising, Marketing, Media and Communication

by committing not to drive distracted if they want their children to do the same. If necessary, parents can also invest in technology to monitor and disable phones while their teens are driving to eliminate the temptation altogether. “No Instagram post, bite of a burger or playlist selection is worth someone else’s life. People are mainly in a car to get from point A to point B, and our wish is for them to do it safely,” says Petro. There are several excellent online resources that provide tips and information to help prepare teens for life behind the wheel, including Mercury Insurance’s Drive Safe Challenge and NHTSA’s Distraction.gov. – BPT

6 Tips to Protect Your Children From Hidden Dangers Around the Home By d-mars.com News Provider

E

ven in the most safetyminded homes, the most serious hazards for children can be hiding in plain sight. Know which unexpected items can be risky, and what to do to prevent an accident. Many parents feel they know the top child proofing items to check off to keep kids safe — cover electrical outlets, lock kitchen cabinets and secure baby gates on stairs. However, there are other potential serious child safety hazards in and outside the home that sometimes can be overlooked, including windows coverings. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes, with infants and young children accidentally becoming entangled in window covering cords. CPSC, the window covering industry and consumer safety advocates all agree that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords should be used in homes with young children.

The Best for Kids certification program launched last year by the window covering industry makes it easy for parents and caregivers to easily identify which window covering products are best suited for homes with young children. The Window Covering Safety Council urges parents and caregivers to follow these six simple tips to help protect children from potentially hidden hazards around the home. 1. Install only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children. Replace window blinds, corded shades and draperies with products that are cordless or have inaccessible cords, such as those marked with the Best for Kids label certification which enables you to easily identify products best suited for young children. 2. Know your plants and which are dangerous if ingested. Make sure to keep these common plants off limits to kids: Rhododendron, Lily of the Valley, Hydrangea, Poinsettia, Purple Nightshade, Mountain Laurel, Mistletoe and Water Hemlock. If you suspect your child has ingested any type of garden plant/flower, seek medical attention

right away. 3. Keep vehicles locked and keys out of reach of children. According to WebMD, even on a day when it’s only 72 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature inside a vehicle can increase by 30 to 40 degrees in an hour, and 70 percent of this increase occurs the first 30 minutes. Teach children that vehicles aren’t safe places to play.

Prevent falling accidents from windows. As the summer heat begins to cool, it’s time to let fresh that air in the house. To prevent potential falling accidents, open windows from the top instead of from the bottom. Window guards and stoppers are strongly suggested for homes with children under the age of 11. Be sure all are firmly secured and installed properly Anchor it! Furniture and TV tipovers are also one of the top hidden hazards in the home, according to the CPSC, which has launched a new safety campaign aimed at reducing the number of deaths and injuries from tipping furniture and TVs. Check before you play. Playgrounds with slides, swings, and other play items of any material that sit in sunlight can cause burns for children — even when it’s not that hot outside. Always check the equipment first and don’t let children run around barefoot. If your child does experience a burn, seek medical help immediately. For more information on window cord safety and the Best for Kids program, visit windowcoverings.org or follow WCSC on Facebook and Twitter. – BPT

The Copycat Mentality By Pastor Ogletree

W

Contributing Writer

e live in a copycat world. So many people are attempting to be somebody else. The culture promotes this in fashion, music, and television, especially when it comes to reality tv. The copycats are dressing like, talking like, thinking like, and behaving like someone they idolize. What a waste! What a shame! Actors, music artists, and popular figures influence the young generation, as

well as adults. Even grown folks are altering their physical appearances, hairstyles, clothing --you name it, to be like someone else. Some of the people being copied are themselves pretending to be someone else and someone they are not.

It is estimated that the world's population is around 7.4 billion people. What is amazing is that though more than 7 billion people are on earth, no two people have the same DNA or fingerprints. Therefore, being a copycat is a rejection of who one is. It is dissatisfaction with God's design of them as an individual human being. Living as a copycat is a subconscious denial of one's self-worth. The Word of God offers clarity on the subject of who created man. In the first book of the Bible, we are told man was made in the image of God. Our Creator God fashioned or produced man. For man to be made in His image, much thought went into this part of God's creation. This denotes man's unique relation to his Creator. Man alone is capable of communicating, thinking, feeling, and patterning life after God. Each individual is intended to be an original! The Word hints at this when it informs us of God's foreknowledge when

He made Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you..." (Jeremiah 1:5). We gleam this in the language of the 139th Psalm: "I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made..." And, we see our Creator's hand in Acts 17:28: "for in Him we live and move and have our being..." The world needs you to be an original. Be the individual who God created you to be. You have so much to offer your family, community, and church being you and no one else. Develop a relationship with God, and mature in the relationship. You will learn to imitate God in your speech, thinking, and behavior. He has a plan for your life, and the world will never recognize or experience it if you settle on being a copycat. Do you! t seems as though there’s a lot of disagreement in our country these days. Political parties not only argue with each other, but they also fight within their ranks. Turn on the news and bickering is everywhere. Click on any internet story and you’ll read through pages of angry comments. Despite all the noise, however, Americans truly are more united than divided. And one of the issues that unites all kinds of Americans is supporting our veterans. In fact, it’s part of a long tradition that goes back to the founding fathers, and there are plenty of ways you can reach out and show your appreciation as well. 1.  A tradition of honoring heroism. In 1782, George Washington issued orders to honor soldiers who showed exceptional distinction by awarding them the Badge of Military Merit. Now called the Purple Heart, it’s given to men and women in uniform who have been injured or killed in combat or captivity. As the oldest medal currently in use, over 1.7 million have received the honor. 2.  Ordinary people giving. Millions of Americans have shown their support for veterans by donating their time and financial support to organizations such as the Purple Heart Foundation. This organization supports veterans and their families with many nationwide programs. They rely on ordinary Americans to volunteer and provide financial assistance to continue these important services. 3. Investing in veterans. After the unemployment rate for veterans

peaked at over 15 percent in 2011, Americans responded. Major companies like Walmart, Amazon and Uber have all pledged to hire thousands of veterans. Voters put pressure on their representatives to enact The Returning Hero’s Tax Credit, which gives companies incentives to hire vets. As a result, the unemployment rate among veterans has been halved. 4.  Helping vets tell their story. A highly effective way to help vets reconnect with people and get a hold of the confusing emotions they experience when coming home is to allow them to tell their story. Many organizations, colleges and community groups have set up programs that teach veterans the skills they need to find their voice and tell their story. 5. Professionals volunteering their time. All wondering how they can help, thousands of professionals such as lawyers, accountants and career coaches have reached out to volunteer their time. Because free legal and financial advice is invaluable to help veterans navigate the world they return to, this kind of assistance is incredibly important. Inspired by the outpouring of support, many Americans wonder what they can do to help. Veterans organizations like the Purple Heart Foundation provide emotional, physical,

hold items, or make cash contributions as a way of thanking veterans for the sacrifice they made. To learn more, visit purpleheartfoundation. org. – BPT

here are so many phrases that we have heard growing up, but do we really know the meaning? How many times have you heard your mom or grandma say, “He’s no spring chicken?” We’ve all heard these types of phrases growing up but had no idea what they meant. Below are some familiar phrases and their meanings. Enjoy!

Phrases and Meanings Break the Ice Meaning: To commence a project or initiate a friendship History: Before the days of trains or cars, port cities that thrived on trade suffered during the winter because frozen rivers prevented commercial ships from entering the city. Small ships known as “icebreakers” would rescue the icebound ships by breaking the ice and creating a path for them to follow. Before any type of business arrangement today, it is now customary “break the ice” before beginning a project.

If I had $10 dollars in my purse, I would put on my best and go to one of the most luxurious hotels in the city to have coffee or tea at their 4 or 5 star restaurant. The ambiance walking into the hotel would lift my spirit. As I entered the restaurant, the maître d’ would address me with great respect. I would be escorted to a lovely table with white linen, silverware, and crystal glasses. I would let the waiter know I was there for coffee only, and they would bring out lovely china cups and saucer service along with a small tray of sweet breads and crumpets. Most times there would be a pianist playing soft music or the music would be piped in. I would savor the service, coffee, dessert, and ambiance. It only cost at the most $10 dollars to pamper my senses and palate. I call it “making great memories.” Many acquaintances would ask me how they too can experience life like I live it. Caught Red-Handed Meaning: To be caught doing something wrong History: This saying originated because of a law. If someone butchered an animal that didn’t belong to him, he had to be caught with the animal’s blood on his hands to be convicted. Being caught with freshly cut meat did not make the person guilty.
