imagined that the jailer might have also wanted to know, why did they not escape? As I pondered that thought, God said to me, ‘You have imprisoned yourself for so long by doing those things that you want to do, My desire for you is to do what I want you do; and right now, I am freeing you. And I am freeing you to do something for Me. That is to bring others to Christ, to the kingdom.’ Essentially that is what Paul and Silas did, even though they were chained up, God freed them, and they were able to bring the jailer and his family to Christ because they believed. So that was my call.”

Pastor Cummings has been teaching for most of his life and enjoys doing so. His new congregants can count on his preaching not to glorify himself or his intellect but to only exalt God and His Word. His desire is to be like the tree in Psalm 1:3, “He shall be like a tree, planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season …” Pastor Cummings wants to be a tree that bears God Fruit so that others can come and pick from him whenever they have a need. It is his mission to also train others to do likewise. For more information about this dynamic ministry, please go to www.hhmcf.com or send an email to info@hhmcf.com.

Even though there are many good organizations already meeting some needs, there are never too many organizations doing it because the collective need is always greater than the provision.” It is their desire for HHMCF to get out into the community and service as many people as possible, whether they be homeless, or those who are in an abusive relationship, those who are in broken families, or wherever God leads the church that is the area that they will serve. Pastor Cummings’ personal mission is to do what God has laid out for him to do, to go out and make disciples of men and women. To bring as many lost men and women, boys and girls to Christ as possible. HHMCF’s mission is to help as many people as they possibly can. I was studying the Acts 16, where Paul and Silas were in prison and God caused an earthquake and the prison shook, the chains fell off the prisoners and the gates were opened. They had an opportunity to escape, but they didn’t escape, they stayed. The jailer, fearing he was going to be killed, prepared to kill himself, but Paul said, “Do not harm yourself? The jailer asked Paul and Silas “what must I do to be saved?” I then

Pastor Cummings was called several times by God before he accepted his call to pastor because he did not want to fail God, but God convinced him that He would equip him to do the work He was calling him to do. He has now committed his life in this new season to “feed” God’s sheep.* “The third time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said,‘Feed my sheep.’ John 21:17

Versons Auto Sales, Your Second Chance Dealership

“Sales are contingent upon the attitude of the salesman, not the attitude of the prospect.” -William Clement Stone

By Sharon C. Jenkins Contributing Writer

V

ernon W. Watson was a public servant (a policeman) when he got the call to be a car salesman. He was actually giving the second in command at AutoNation a traffic ticket one day. A strange place to get a job offer, but he did and that day

he became an auto salesman and the rest is history. Six figures later he decided that if he can make others money, then he can make a lot of money for himself and he became an entrepreneur in 2008. When he started people kept saying that this was the wrong time to start this type of business because of the economy, but he decided not to follow their advice. He now owns three dealerships and is serving Houston’s residents by affording them the opportunity of car ownership regardless of their financial past. His

mission is to give a customer a good reliable vehicle with a warranty that they can depend on to get them to work, church or wherever they are going and to reestablish their credit. When AutoNation shut its doors, Watson became a top Mercedes car salesman at the same location because of his #1 Salesman in the Country status with his previous employer. He is known for his stellar work ethic. Originally from Crockett, Texas, he readily lays claim to his “country boy” status. His life philosophy is “just work hard and the money will always be there.” Watson’s sales hero was a quiet older gentleman who was the top salesman at AutoNation. His mellow and smooth technique impressed Watson. His name was Tim O’Toole and he was a master salesman. He studied O’Toole in order to improve his salesmanship and progressed steadfastly to the head of the class. His experience selling cars equipped him somewhat for his experience as a dealer but not completely. Going from $400,000 a year to $0 a week as an owner was scary. He no longer had the dealer support staff to assist him and he quickly became a one man show, he washed, sold, and repaired the cars. His motivation was his desire to help others. Watson stated, “When I worked at the large dealerships, people came in all the time with large down payments from their income tax or savings, that had bad credit but because

they had struggled financially, they could not get approved and ended up walking away. That was money that was walking down the street.” He also has extended his services to urban small business owners who have challenges in reestablishing their credit because of their business struggles in a turbulent economy. He offers them the ability to get the finer things in life such asMercedes and BMW without the headache of a credit denial. Versons Auto Sales not only helps their customers get cars but they also do second chance employment. Watson sees this as his way of extending a helping hand to the community and contributing to the economic growth of the city. Recently a fellow employee from the Mercedes dealership approached him for a job. This was the same guy that told him that he wouldn’t make it as a Mercedes salesman because he wasn’t a fancy dresser and was from the country. Well Watson hired this fellow and now he’s working for him. That’s just the kind of guy he is, a hard worker and willing to help his fellow man anyway that he can, when he can. At Versons Auto Sales nobody is denied the opportunity to buy a vehicle. They are “the home of the no credit check. You are approved with driver’s license, check stubs, and a utility bill. Bring your down payment and ride today.” Give them a call at 713-742-5900 or check out their inventory on the Internet at www.versonsauto.com.

Operation Motivation By E’brandia L. Perry Contributing Writer

I

’ve heard it, and I’ve said it…”I’m just not motivated today.” I’ve seen it, and I’ve done it…walking about the house sulking and growling “I need someone to motivate me!” The question, however…motivate me for what, to do what, and for how long? What life has taught me is that some people have dropped the ball on self-motivation, and crave fulfillment through others. Inherent motivation usually comes after a tragic incident has occurred. Mark Twain said, “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” I couldn’t have said it better myself! Nikos Kazantzakis, a Greek writer, born in 1883 said, “In order to succeed we must first believe we can.” Do YOU believe? Are you motivated to succeed? I’ve read countless quotes by various writers in order to seek an unbiased opinion about what motivation truly is. What I’ve discovered is that motivation is undoubtedly an innate action that catapults an

external state of being. Motivation is developed by a variety of concepts. It derives from intrinsic (from within) and extrinsic (effect by external environments) circumstances. Motivation, by definition, is a process that initiates and guides us toward a goal. Motivation is not something that can be observed but can be noted by reactions exhibited as a result of an internal action. When people think about motivation, the first thing that pops into mind is motivational speaking. While I believe that one can be inspired through motivational speaking, only self-motivation can drive you to the next level. Don’t procrastinate and hesitate to get up and get busy. Put the key in the ignition of your car called “Motivation” and drive yourself wherever you want to go! Don’t shrug your shoulders and brush off the opportunities to get ahead because you think you can’t. Sometimes we get into such a dark mood that even the thought of redirecting negative thoughts to be positive seem too complicated. Reactivate your idle mind and reach for the mark. Be proactive, not inactive, and then stay active! When you are sedentary, you lose the will to move around. This will demolish your level of motivation. Set a specific goal and work towards it. The direction and path that you set for

yourself will be just the inspiration that you need. It’s your goal; you own it; you earn it! Be excited even if no one else is. What excites you does NOT have to excite the next person. Keep in mind that you can be motivated when taking “baby steps.” When the task is completed and the goal has been reached, reward yourself however you like. Speak LIFE into your circumstances and watch mountains move. Once you get out of your comfort zone, the number of opportunities are immeasurable. In order to experience and achieve new things, your “comfort zone” has to be closed down. Change is good, especially

when it’s self-inflicted. You can’t resist the change for fear of the outcome. I once heard my mother say, “If you do what you’ve always done, you’re going to get what you’ve always got.” Don’t let that be the story of your life. If you are content with getting the same results, then THIS article is NOT for you. Once you get up and get yourself motivated the remuneration will have a domino effect on everything in your life. Remember, reactivate your idle mind, deactivate the slouchy mood, be proactive, not inactive, and STAY active. In the famous words of NIKE, ‘’JUST DO IT” and in my words, “KEEP DOING IT!” Operation Motivation… IGNITE!

Shop Online Effortlessly With These Expert Tips! By Bonny Blake Whether you want to buy groceries or a car, you can literally buy anything online. There are many online retailers and auction sites available on the Internet. Whether you’re after used goods or something brand new, there are discounted rates available for everything. This article will assist you in getting the most out of online shopping. Shop many different online sites to get the best deal possible. With the speed and convenience of online shopping, it’s not at all difficult to locate the best possible deals. Just look at prices from sites you feel good about purchasing from. No matter how good a price is, ordering from an untrustworthy place is not favorable. Only shop through an Internet connection which is secure. Identity thieves and hackers target public connections and Wi-Fi hotspots for victims. You should be browsing different stores online in order to compare products and offers. It pays to comparison shop different products and brands unless you are determined to get a particular one. You should choose the product that provides your necessary features, and do comparison pricing on the product. Go to sites that the stores manage regularly because there are always new things that are going on sale.

Go over the product page of the item you are interested in very carefully. Read the product specifications to be sure that you are getting all the features and options you need. The photograph used may not be the product you’re actually purchasing. If you buy from a certain online merchant a lot, you should think about registering with it. This can save you time during the checkout process, and it can provide you with money-saving options. You can often opt to receive emails that will notify you of sales and deals as soon

as they are available. Getting this type of account set up can also keep your orders organized and make returns smoother. If you’re going to become an online shopper, make sure you shop from a secure computer connection only. Hackers gravitate toward public Wi-Fi connections when seeking out their new victims, so it is unwise to shop online in these venues. Create a bookmark file for your favorite online shopping sites. These sites are the

ones you find yourself at over and over again. When shopping, include promo sites or coupons you use. This means you only have to click a few times in order to get trusted deals from retailers. No one is surprised that online shopping is so popular today. The vast selection, diversity, and prices of online retailers make them a great option for nearly anyone. Hopefully now that you have read this article, you better understand online shopping and are ready to get out there and at least begin browsing.

training will assist them in being better business owners. Participants will attend some mandatory classes, and then present their plan to a panel of judges who determine the winners. The first place winner receives $15,000 to launch their business plan, followed by second place that gets $10,000, and third is $5,000. Dr. Lawson is very excited about this project, and it is the first time the city is doing a program like this. “I am all about bringing new ideas into fruition,” she says as she speaks about the need to change and evolve. “The City of Houston has a lot of small businesses that are very successful. Houston is an entrepreneur’s dream. So I know there are many people with ideas just waiting for the right opportunity.” In her eight years of being the director of HPL, Dr. Lawson has taken the approach of running the library like a busi-

By Julian S. Intern/Contributing Writer

I

t was a damp Wednesday afternoon, and I was walking into the Julia Ideson Building across the courtyard from The Central Houston Public Library downtown. The Ideson Building houses the archives of Houston’s history and has amazing architecture. The reason for my visit was business. I would be having the pleasure of speaking with one of Houston’s top public servants, Dr. Rhea Lawson, Director of the Houston Public Library. Speaking with Dr. Lawson I was able to learn about her journey and her vision for Houston Public Library (HPL). She first started in the library system after college, working as a librarian at Pratt Library in Baltimore. She, “fell in love with the work,” and decided to then pursue a masters and doctorate to better position her to move to the top of her profession. She quickly established herself as a leader in her field, which is reflected in the types of positions she has held over her career. Dr. Lawson uses her unique leadership skills in her approach to running the largest public library system in Texas. “Being a leader means having a great big vision about service,” Lawson instantly told me. While sitting in her office she also spoke on being in touch with the needs of the people. Technology has drastically influenced the way people live, use libraries and technology has also influenced expectations of library services. It is the number one change HPL is implementing to provide services to customers. The

new virtual services division, a recent technology initiative, was created because HPL understands that although many of their customers may never come into the library buildings but still want to access to library resources. The virtual services that HPL provides are directly related to the new trends going on in the world. In addition to the new virtual services, HPL also offers eBooks, online databases, and a laptop and IPad loan program for its customers. Not only is HPL growing by embracing new technology in the library system, but also by creating new positive initiatives for Houstonians. Children’s Book Celebration is an event created by Dr. Lawson that allows children something to look forward to on an annual basis. The event takes over the Central Library Downtown and brings in a famous children/teen author, and allows kids to interact with them. It is held in May during children’s book week and places emphasis on the importance of reading and illiteracy. The guest author this year was Jarrett Krosoczka of the Lunch Lady Series. He left a profound impression on HPL staff because of his willingness to stay to the end of the event and being very interactive with the children. Another program that was established for adults at HPL is Liftoff Houston. Liftoff is a business plan competition, geared towards people who never had an opportunity to have a business, but have a business idea. HPL has formed a partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Business Opportunities and Capital One Bank. The program will teach people how to develop the perfect business plan. It is an excellent chance for entrepreneurs to be connected to all the business resources available in the city. Even if participants do not win, gaining this experience and

ness. Creating new and innovative experiences for the public and being focused on gaining outside donors while working closely with city officials has put HPL in a rare position in comparison with other libraries in the U.S. While a number of libraries are struggling across the country, HPL has added new jobs and renewed weekend hours, making the Houston library system a hub of continuous activity. When asked how she has accomplished this feat, she simply says, “Because I’m deeply committed to providing good service.” Over the years, Dr. Lawson has proven that she does her best work in large urban settings, as she has worked in library systems in Baltimore, Detroit and New York City. Having a love for large cities, she is not intimidated by a large metropolis like Houston, which has 42 different library locations. She proclaims,” I am such an urban creature.”

In speaking with Dr. Lawson I learned that she really has the interest of Houstonians at heart. By using her unique position as director of HPL, she has been focused on community outreach and making sure the library works for the people of Houston. Starting programs such as the Children’s Book Celebration and Liftoff Houston, children and adults can both benefit from HPL in a whole new and exciting way. HPL is constantly growing through its virtual division and other initiatives. Houston residents have benefited tremendously from the leadership of Dr. Rhea Lawson. Her confidence in her staff and their ability to weather economic storms has shown the nation that HPL is a true example of what works in Houston. It has been proven over the last eight years that HPL is in the good hands of Dr. Rhea Lawson and as a Houston native, I am glad.

National Black MBA Association Inc.’s 35th Annual Conference Comes to Houston

Jesse Tyson

Audrey Dillard Hines

By Sharon C. Jenkins Contributing Writer

4

0 Years of Courageous Leadership is the theme for this year’s National Black MBA Association Inc.’s (NBMBAA) 35th Annual Conference which will be held in our great city on September 10th through the 14th at George R. Brown Convention Center. In an interview with Jesse Tyson, President/CEO and Audrey Dillard Hines, Board Chair of NBMBAA, d-mars.com discussed the upcoming conference. JENKINS: Why did you select Houston as the site for this year’s annual conference? TYSON: This will be our third time having the conference in Houston. Each time we have been here, we have had nothing but big success. Partly because of the cultural richness of the city of Houston, also the local chapter is celebrating its 30th year as being a part of our organization. So we thought it was appropriate at this time to hold our event in the city. JENKINS: I noticed that you are bringing an entrepreneurial twist to the conference this year. What prompted this initiative and how does that align with your mission? DILLARD-HINES: One of the objectives of the organization is to make sure that we are also bringing economic wealth and health to our communities and we know that there are a number of ways that we can do that. So the corporate relationships that we have through those partnerships and with that stakeholder group is very important but we also recognize that we need to be diverse in how we approach that effort to improve economic development in our communities. Entrepreneurship, gave us that option, especially with the labor market being what it has been in the last ten years or so. TYSON: I think that it is fair to say 40 years ago we started off as an organization primarily focused on assisting our corporate partners with talent acquisition, making sure that our corporate partners were able to find top African American

talent to meet their employment needs. I think that we have morphed over time to address more than just talent acquisition. It’s really about helping our corporate partners retain that talent and also develop it to make sure that we don’t see disparities over time when our members are competing with other job seekers who went to the same kind of universities that they may have gone to. We really have become more of a holistic partner with our corporate partners versus just focusing on talent acquisition. It gives us another avenue to travel and gives other options to our stakeholder group and members. JENKINS: How does the conference address the generational mix that is currently in the workplace? From the Baby Boomers to the Millennials there are five generations, how will the conference speak to each group? TYSON: I think as an organization, we know that our members and other conference attendees deserve the best of class development, career opportunities, tools and other resources that are really needed to have a meaningful career. So we understand the fact that we must be relevant, resourceful and ready to really address those needs. This year’s conference theme is about “courageous leadership,” owning your own success and so what we are bringing to our constituents are speakers and workshops that will include folks from all generations to address their needs. We have people like Bob Johnson for example, BET Founder, that will be our keynote speaker on Friday and all generations can relate to Bob’s story. We try to bring people to them with a story that they can relate to and build upon for their own careers. DILLARD-HINES: We will also have Judy Smith who a lot of people who watch ABC’s Scandal are aware of, who is the real Olivia Pope. She will be our keynote for the Wednesday Leadership Institute Breakfast. This institute focuses on development opportunities especially for those members who are attendees who are more in the early stages of their career development. Additionally we have Rev.

Dr. Al Sharpton who will be our Town Hall Luncheon speaker on Thursday. We have a number of different people who will help us attract that generational mix that we know we need to make the conference a relevant experience. TYSON: We also have the Innovation White Board Challenge, where the entire individual will have a marker and a whiteboard to be able to pitch and sell their idea or their business proposition to a panel of judges for the opportunity to win $10,000 and typically the participant in these events are of the younger generation. DILLARD-HINES: I had an opportunity to serve as a judge for one that was held locally in Atlanta. It was a great and exciting opportunity to see how bright and industrious our members and participants were. TYSON: We still have room for those who are interested to register for the challenge. All they need to do is go on our website, www.nbmbaaconference.org. JENKINS: What is “courageous leadership?” TYSON: I think “courageous leadership” is really the starting point of owning your own career. Too often people rely, if you are working, on a major corporation or others to guide our careers. We’ve taken the position that all of us as individuals

have some ownership of our careers and we need to seize the moment to move our careers forward, in some environments it requires doing some things that maybe we are not comfortable with. That is the real notion of what courageous leadership is all about. When you listen to the stories of Bob Johnson, I think it brings a real live definition to what it means to be courageous when you consider where Bob came from to where he is today. DILLARD-HINES: We recognize that the conference is an opportunity for us to have our members and our attendees take responsibility for their own branding. We’d like people to understand that you are a product. You are a brand that needs to be packaged and marketed in a way that will help you be in control of you are marketing yourself to, so you need to know who you are and what you want to do. The conference is a wonderful opportunity to be exposed to your own development, to recruiters, to business leaders, and other young professionals all under the same roof. There’s still time to register for this year’s conference. It’s one of the largest most successful conferences of its kind in the world. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to experience career and selfdevelopment opportunities, job opportunities as well as phenomenal networking opportunities,” stated Dillard-Hines.

C-STEM da Vinci Booster Club Receives a Community Challenge “Everyone is an Artist and an Engineer”

CSTEM Teacher and Student Support Services, Inc. (“C-STEM”) held its 1st annual C-STEM da Vinci Booster Club breakfast at the Junior League of Houston, Thursday, July 25, 2013. The event featured $5,000 donations from State Farm, and the Dominion Foundation on behalf of Dr. Robert Satcher, NASA Astronaut and Physician. Two C-STEM alumni were featured speakers at the event. Wisdom Muofhe, a UT Mechanical Engineering student said, “I am very grateful to have been a part of the C-STEM program because it helped me in obtaining leadership skills and prompted the decision to dive into an innovative technology career path”. Marcos Castro, who has been a C-STEM student the last three years at Jackson Middle School added, “CSTEM is not only about robotics; it’s about learning to solve problems through different fields. I have become an engineer, a scientist, a writer, a researcher, and an artist. We are the future, the future engineers, and the future problem solvers. Without us there is nothing. Without C-STEM we are less.” The da Vinci Booster Club Breakfast challenged individuals/businesses to make annual commitments or small monthly gift commitments of $10 to $250, to provide ongoing support for C-STEM’s program and activities. “Support from our Booster Club members will ensure CSTEM has a sustainable funding source to leverage in addition to annual corporate and foundation gifts”, stated Dr. Flowers. “These smaller gifts will ensure C-STEM reduces its reliance on major gifts, and that it maintains solvency during economic downturns when corporations and foundations have a tendency to pull back funding”, added Dr. Flowers. The breakfast also featured the STEMing the Time Community Champion Award presentation to Mr. Gary Jones, a long-time supporter who has been making monthly contributions to CSTEM for more than 5 years.

It Takes a Community and Texas Legislative Black Caucus It Never Hurts to Add Prayer d-mars at the TSU

The Texas Legislative Black Caucus recently hosted a Town Hall meeting at the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs of the Texas Southern University Campus. The Texas Legislative Black Caucus partnered with the KEY PAC, Houston Sun, Houston Forward Times, Majic 102 FM, KTSU Radio, KCOH 1230AM Radio and the Texas Southern University – School of Public Affairs. The Town Hall meeting provided unprecedented access to African American members of the Texas Legislature from the Houston-area and covered topics such as the 83rd Session, the recent Supreme Court decision striking down Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act and the impact on Texas, in particular on Voter ID, and the Trayvon Martin verdict.

any years ago I started realizing that since I live in an unincorporated area of Harris County, when I need to find a resource, I have to humble myself and ask for help. Having been a single mother of three young children provided many opportunities to need assistance. Thankfully living within minutes of the fourth largest city in America, there is an abundance of resources, if you can find them. While organizations such as United Way offer a wealth of information and with the impact of the internet, a person can pretty much find what they need if they have the time and energy to look for it. Like many parents, by the time I would work a full time job and usually at least one part time job in addition to the responsibilities of raising children, taking care of the household needs, being active in church, sports and community projects, the last thing I felt like I had was time. Unfortunately, I heard from many neighbors of all ages and characteristics that we shared the same issues---not enough time to figure out what we needed much less time to research for resources. I began to pray not only for a “community resource center” to become a reality for but God to use the gifts He had given me in being a natural networker. I began to collect as much information about the smaller non-profit groups in my area as well as the various programs offered by the local churches, schools and elected leaders. I sought after information not only to help me, but to help my neighbors. Before I knew it, I realized that my passion was helping others and others found it easy to contact me for the needs they too had. Friends, family, coworkers and neighbors began to refer people to me to see where they could locate a service in our community. Jokingly, my former boss told me that we would always be a great team as he knew the businesses in our area and I knew the resources. Imagine when he was offered the position as CEO of our Chamber of Commerce? He was always able to let me know about new businesses and I could tell him about new organizations. Together we had brainstormed on how to match the businesses and the non-profits to make our community a better place to live, wor-

ship, work and volunteer. When a new business settled in, he would remind them that the amount of advertising that a business gains by community reinvestment such as providing volunteers for the local mentoring program or donating the funds to cover t-shirts for volunteers at a local cleanup day would far outweigh the same amount of money being spent to advertise in traditional ways such as the newspaper, billboards or signage. Recently I was contacted by a representative of the Houston Food Bank. It seems that a local grocer in our neighborhood has seen in just a few years that there are many needs out in our community. They have invited the Food Bank to partner with them in a six month pilot program to open the Houston Food Bank Community Resource Center at Joe V’s Smart Shop. In the Center, representatives will process SNAP applications as well as provide classes on stretching the money on more nutritional foods. In addition, I have been asked to help promote the Center to the smaller non-profit groups in the community who can be a blessing by committing to volunteer a few hours a month as a greeter in exchange for being able to leave information in the Center for shoppers to learn about the non-profit. Imagine, a young single mom comes into the store and is able to apply for assistance and while waiting to be seen, a volunteer asks the ages of her children. The client begins to share her story and her needs and the volunteer is able to pick up information and share about everything from Single Parent Support Group information to details on how to qualify for discounted sports programs for her children. Information will be available on the community college, churches, school news, how to qualify for free Metro bus passes and how to obtain a guaranteed low interest rate for a vehicle purchase. At the same time that the client is getting assistance, the volunteers are able to gather information on what services are needed. With many of the volunteers coming from the faith community, you already know there will be prayer and in addition, once a person has been helped, they are more likely to help promote the Center. In time, businesses will see the value of helping the neighbors and funds as well as volunteers will be more available to assist the community. All it takes is a community and prayer.

The Pursuit of HAPPYNESS

By Dr. Wendy Contributing Writer

W

hat is your purpose in life? Is it to be happy? What is happiness? What makes you happy? Have you ever been happy? Have you ever taken a step back and asked yourself these questions? No matter what society we live in, we all have the same deep desire: to become happy. In our daily life we constantly experience happiness and unhappiness, but we are still quite ignorant as to what happiness really is. A study was recently done to examine the differences in how happy people live their lives compared to people who are unhappy. The study measured people’s spending habits, consumer values, and personality traits.

Below are the results: 1. Money management - Creating a budget and tracking your financial transactions is a great way to prevent from making impulsive purchases. Start paying off a credit card, pay yourself first or start contributing to a retirement fund. Research shows that if you manage your

money better today, you will be happier tomorrow. 2. Life experiences vs. material items – Spending money on life experiences vs. materials items can be challenging, however people who habitually spend their money on life experiences are happier than people who tend to buy material items. 3. Past memories - We cannot move forward unless we acknowledge the past, however it is best to take a positive approach. Data shows that happy people do not ignore their past as they relive the joyful times and do not spend a lot of time agonizing on days gone by. Creating happy and pleasant thoughts positions you to focus on good memories instead of dwelling on negative aspects of the past. 4. Emotions – Speaking and acknowledging people is a part of life. Some people will speak when you speak to them and others will not. When someone smiles warmly at happy people, they smile back and feel warm inside. Therefore, if you pay more attention to the emotions of other people you will be happier. 5. Your community – Having a sense of community is vital. A person is happiest when three basic psychological needs are satisfied: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Data shows that these psychological needs can be met by one’s community. People want to be involved, want to know people in their community and look forward to being home if these needs are met.

Happiness is a choice; however it’s what you put into it. Yes, life is going to throw you some curve balls as that’s expected, however the result will determine how you respond to the curve ball. Life is a journey, so don’t waddle in the negative. I know this is much easier said than done, however give it a try! Learn to appreciate each day and the cards you have been dealt. The Pursuit of HAPPYNESS does exist, however it’s up to YOU to MAKE IT HAPPEN. Source: Psychology Today

What Will I Tell My Children?

By Shanedria Wagner Contributing Writer

W

hat will I tell my children? I pondered, like many Americans in the aftermath of the George Zimmerman case. Though my threeyear-old son is too young to comprehend the implications of the trial’s outcome, even he understands why consequences are in order for harming others unprovoked. Someday his father will tell the following story: Justice For Trayvon Martin. The conclusion to Trayvon’s story is still being written by history, an ongoing discussion in my household. So what shall I tell my ten-year-old daughter who is mature enough to understand right from wrong, yet cannot fathom how the slaying of an unarmed teenager (the same age as many of her cousins) went unpunished? If folks with good intentions supposedly still go to a place rhyming with well, how can a wellintentioned murderer avoid jail? She might wonder why there was no sincere apology.

The triggerman prioritized neighborhood safety− that was not threatened before the gun sounded− over preservation of life. Are they not the same? Even if shooting were the last resort, was it necessary to shoot to kill? Could Zimmerman have just disabled the presumed troublemaker? Could he have just warned the young man with the gun like the very police officer he aspires to be? Why was death the punishment for a young man who defended himself after being accosted for meandering in a hoodie? The aversion to Trayvon’s hoodie suggests he was unworthy of sporting the popular sweatshirt worn by athletes and college students, even though he was a college-bound student athlete! Were there any laws outlawing such head gear on the streets of Sanford? Trayvon’s status as an occasionally- mischievous minor did not negate his accomplishments and potential. He was never connected to crimes associated with stickup boys who also wore hoodies. When I first heard that a teen suspected of burglary had been killed, I braced myself for revelations suggesting his guilt. Surely he accessorized his black clothing with a matching ski mask and leather gloves, I thought. What kind of weapon did he tote? When the verdict was read, eliminating all chances of GZ’s incarceration, in vain I anticipated an apology or acknowledgement that killing Trayvon

was wrong. Ideally, a genuine tearful plea for forgiveness would have been a start. I have seen people more moved by the loss of pets, however. Children must hear the following: The dream of Martin Luther King is lived daily by those who choose to. Based on character and compatibility, professional, familial, and social alliances form across ethnicities every day. All shades of our human family protested on behalf of Trayvon’s family. Racism and hatred are practiced by some people of all ethnicities. Regardless of who has power, every person has power to create or heal wounds. People who look like us don’t always like us. There is just as much white-on-white as there is black-on-black crime. Children should be sensitive to all human suffering as they strive to make the world a better, not bitter, place. All human beings fit profiles, yet should not be stereotyped. People will not always admit having made assumptions about you based on appearance, yet their actions will likely show what they expect of you. Young people, our greatest national resource, are endangered. Even educated, skilled, law-abiding individuals are targets of prejudiced predators. So their

counterparts are even more at risk. Violence is not the best option. The only option in matters of life-or-death, it should never be glorified. Outcomes in the court of law are based on juror’s perceptions. At least 2.2 million people −who signed petitions−would have voted in favor of there being consequences for GZ; this was reassuring. We must accept a not-guilty verdict in this case. Varied juror perceptions produce a court system that acquits some men for murder, yet convicts other people who kill animals. Neutrality is necessary. Acknowledge the good and the bad; don’t be too unreasonably optimistic by believing racism ended. Don’t focus on negativity. Regardless of the outcomes of civil pursuits, one way to honor the life Trayvon Martin is to value life itself. We must awake from this nightmare and teach other little Trayvons to achieve their dreams. If equipped with skills, they will do themselves justice. That could have been my son, said many, referring to Trayvon. We must consequently regard every boy and girl with the same compassion we want others to feel towards our sons and daughters. We must all seek justice for Trayvon.

That is what I will tell my children.

Reactions to Life Experiences Show Our Level of Joy

By Marie Grossett Millard, Montgomery and Maurice became good friends during their elementary school years. The three friends had several mutual interests, including sports. They all played baseball, basketball and tennis. In high school, the boys started a stamp collecting club, and they traded stamps from all over the world. Maurice, Montgomery and Millard all loved the Lord. Before they became teenagers, they accepted Christ into their hearts and were baptized. They enjoyed telling other people about Jesus and His love. After graduating from high school, the young men pursued college degrees. They played on the college’s baseball team and excelled in academics. Montgomery was a happiness-oriented person. If things were going well for him, he was happy and had no difficulty expressing that happiness. When he made good grades, he celebrated. When his grades were poor, he sulked and was not the least bit happy. Maurice was always filled with joy. Even when life’s circumstances were less than ideal, he always seemed to be content. He always talked about how blessed he was, and never talked about the negative experiences of his life. Shortly after Maurice, Montgomery and Millard graduated from college, Maurice was involved in a traffic accident. Although his injuries were severe, he remained upbeat about life. “I am thankful that God spared my life so that I continue to live my life for Him,” said Maurice. A few months later, Montgomery was injured in a traffic accident. Montgomery’s injuries were not as severe as those

Maurice had sustained, but Montgomery’s response was totally different. Montgomery only suffered a small cut on his face, but he complained about the injury almost every waking moment. One day he moaned, “That cut sure is itching today!” The next day he grumbled, “I’m going to have to take a bunch of pain killers just to make it through today!” Millard was much more reserved than his two friends, keeping his thoughts to himself most of the time. He described himself neither as happy or unhappy, joyful or not joyful. However, he was aware of how Maurice and Montgomery reacted to life’s issues, and he always observed those reactions. Just two days after Montgomery’s traffic accident, Millard asked him, “How is your injury today, Friend?” “My injury is doing great!,” Montgomery replied. “It’s been itching very strongly all day. You could say I’m doing very well under the circumstances!” Millard thought for a moment before he said, “When Christ died, he gave us the power not to be under the circumstances. God’s Word tells us we are ‘more than conquerors,’ so we should live above the circumstances.” “Ouch!, That hurt!,” exclaimed Montgomery. “You just quit preaching and went to meddling!” To contact the writer of this column about speaking engagements, including Christian Comedy Fundraisers and/or puppet ministry, please email raysofson@ gmail.com.
