This is a critical component of any wellness regimen, too, and there are numerous apps in this space that are growing in popularity. Audio-guided workouts (via apps, podcasts, etc.) are becoming all the rage, too, and that trend is expected to continue in 2019.

TECHNOLOGY TO THE

RESCUE

Making healthcare more accessible and medications more affordable By d-mars.com News Provider

I

f you find it challenging to understand the convoluted and sometimes conflicting information regarding your healthcare, you're not alone. Because the U.S. healthcare system is so complex, sometimes it can be a struggle for patients and even doctors to have clear, transparent information about the costs of medications and how they are covered by insurance. Part of the problem is that doctors have had a near impossible job of knowing the costs of the thousands of drugs they prescribe given the many different insurance plans that cover their patients, with each charging different amounts for these medications. That's been frustrating both for patients trying to take personal and financial ownership of their health, and for the busy doctors trying to help them. F o r t u n a t e l y, technology has come to the rescue. More than 85 percent of physicians now use electronic hea lt h record (EHR) technology, which makes it possible to utilize new tools and digital platforms that provide your doctor drug and plan coverage

information right in the exam room, as well as options for lower-cost alternative medications. This helps guarantee that you're getting the right medication at the best price, as well as know in advance if the medication requires prior authorization (PA). This avoids the frustration of going to fill your prescription at the pharmacy only to learn that it's either not covered or needs a PA. This is just one of the many ways technology is changing healthcare. The availability and popularity of health and wellness tech tools has exploded in recent years, with

wearable devices and apps providing personalized health information such as heart rate, blood pressure and sleep patterns, as well as medication, hydration and exercise reminders. "High-tech tools gives doctors transparency into a patient prescription plan, allowing them to better monitor their patients'

conditions and make better treatment decisions, while also enabling patients to be much more knowledgeable about their health and more engaged in what they need to do to stay healthy," said Dr. Lynne Nowak, chief physician experience officer at Express Scripts. "Technology can help make healthcare more of a partnership between the patient and the physician." Even when physicians are not using the latest technologies, their patients often have access to personalized treatment information right from their smartphones. One such app available through Express Scripts provides individual information so you can learn about the medications you're being prescribed and any existing safety issues, whether you need a prior authorization, what the out-of-pocket costs of the treatment will be, which pharmacies offer the best price and whether there are alternatives or generics available that would cost less. With this information in hand, you can discuss the options with your doctor and leave the office with a prescription you know you'll be able to fill at a price you can afford. (BPT)

5 Self-Care Tips

FOR PARENTS IN THE NEW YEAR By d-mars.com News Provider

A

s we begin a new year, it's important to reflect on our successes and examine the areas we'd like to nurture more in the year ahead. One area that often gets deprioritized by busy parents, but is essential to our wellbeing, is self-care. Setting aside time to reenergize your own needs will not only impact your physical, emotional and mental health, but will also allow you to feel more present and patient toward others. Take some time to develop your self-care routine with these tips in the new year:

explore new recipes and are a lifesaver during busy weeks.

2. Schedule "me time" Just as you would block time on your calendar for upcoming appointments, block a few hours for essential "me time" each week. Prioritizing time for yourself - even just one hour - gives you time to unwind and recharge. Visit the nail salon, head to your favorite workout class or take a bubble bath - you'll feel more present and relaxed after.

1. Nourish your mind and body

3. Connect more

Eating nutritious whole foods is fundamental for our mental and physical wellbeing. Food affects our mood, so cutting back on sugar and processed foods will help to feel less sluggish and more energized. Start by developing mindful habits like finding ways to sneak more vegetables into meals and identifying better-for-you alternatives to familiar favorites. Meal delivery boxes are a great way to

Stay connected with loved ones and maintain relationships. Whether it's a long distance family member or nearby best friend, taking the time to call someone and ask how they're doing will show you care. In exchange, surrounding yourself with loving, supportive people will remind you that you're doing a great job. An affordable family plan makes it easier to stay connected, and with

Whether it's a date night with your spouse or a group outing with friends and family, a night out is a welcome change of scenery for parents. Select a date in advance and start a group text to get everyone involved. Try a new restaurant, take a cooking class, see a new movie or visit an art gallery - scale your plans to fit your budget and have fun with it. Getting out of the house, socializing with other adults, and doing intellectual activities is a refreshing break from the day-to-day routine.

5. Get the kids onboard If blocking time on your calendar for alone time seems impossible, find creative ways to make it work by getting the kids onboard. Children also benefit from downtime - using the opportunity to write in a journal, read a new book and exercise their imagination. Take the kids to your local library to pick out a new book and do some reading or flip through a photo book on their own. It's beneficial to them and gives you time and space to do the same. This year, don't forget to carve out time for yourself and practice self-care. Be mindful and kind to yourself, and find ways to get the whole family onboard. Embrace options that make life a little easier too - from meal delivery boxes to library passes and shared family plans. Walmart Family Mobile makes it easy and affordable for families to stay connected with no-contract unlimited plans starting at just $24.88 per month, so your family can get more for less. To learn more, visit www.myfamilymobile.com. * Plus taxes and fees. Additional lines must be of equal or lesser value. Add up to four additional lines for only $24.88/mo. each line. † To get 4G LTE speed, you must have a 4G LTE capable device and 4G LTE SIM. Actual availability, coverage and speed may vary. During periods of congestion, Walmart Family Mobile customers may notice reduced speeds versus carrier branded customers. LTE is a trademark of ETSI. (BPT)

KICK-START a healthy

new year by gobbling up

MORE TURKEY By d-mars.com News Provider

N

ew Year's resolutions are often hard to maintain, especially if you are trying to make healthier food choices after indulging in treats during the holidays. According to a 2019 Marist Poll, 44 percent of Americans make New Year's resolutions. For those who plan to make a resolution, two of the top resolutions are losing weight and eating healthier. Focusing on nutrition can start with meal planning and healthy protein options like turkey. Protein is essential to a wholesome, balanced diet, and turkey is an excellent source of protein. Turkey is also low in fat and perfect in many healthy recipes. Honeysuckle White offers a variety of turkey options - from ground turkey, to cutlets, breast strips, ready-to-cook meatballs and more. The brand works exclusively with independent family farmers in the U.S. to raise turkeys with care and without growth-promoting antibiotics. Skinless turkey breast is one of the leanest meats available and is considered a superfood by the American Heart

Association. A boneless four-ounce serving of turkey contains 26 grams of protein - 12 percent more protein than the same size serving of boneless chicken breast - and only about one gram of fat plus zero grams of saturated fat. Turkey has much more to offer beyond protein. According to the USDA's nutrition database, turkey typically has fewer calories and less cholesterol than other proteins, and is rich in all the B vitamins, especially B6 and B12, which help the body convert food into energy. Turkey also provides an abundance of minerals, including immune-boosting zinc, selenium and iron. Family farm-raised ground turkey is a great choice for families who want to eat better, and it is excellent for chili, tacos, fajitas and turkey burgers. With 28 grams of protein and only one gram of fat per serving, 99 percent fat-free ground turkey breast provides a great foundation for a wholesome entrée. For families on the go, convenient, oven-ready turkey meatloaf is

a versatile option that is perfect for busy schedules. Achieving balanced, wholesome meals only takes a few simple steps. Smart shoppers plan meals before heading to the store and stick to the outside perimeter of the store to purchase fresh ingredients including vegetables, fruit and lean meats. While shopping, be sure to read the nutrition labels to know what you are feeding your family. Another benefit of laying out your shopping routine and planning meals is saving time and money. This budgetfriendly approach will eliminate extra trips out to eat and can inspire new creations in the kitchen. Throughout the week you can have fun with your family, building new meals to put a variety of flavors on the dinner table. Working toward a healthier lifestyle does not have to be a drastic overhaul. Making small strides, including planning meals and shopping trips, will lead to smarter food choices. With a mix of lean proteins and fresh produce in the kitchen, you can deliver well-rounded and healthy meals for your whole family in the new year. (BPT)
