Do you remember who taught you to wash your hands after using the restroom or who taught you to cover your mouth when you cough? These are all learned habits, probably instilled in you at a very young age by a parent, teacher or friend. Health education is probably one of the most important aspects of learning.

t’s true what they say…when you look good, you feel good. It’s no accident that beauty and wellness is a multibillion dollar industry. The two complement each other. Beauty is looking good on the outside; wellness is feeling good on the inside. An entrepreneur since age 13, Leola Anifowoshe has always been businessminded and fascinated with beauty, vitamins and health and wellness. Several years ago, she realized that certain foods would trigger her sarcoidosis – an autoimmune disease – so she began to research information about certain drugs and vitamins. “At the time, my husband and I owned a vitamin store, so I was already really into wellness,” Anifowoshe said. “I started taking certain supplements and began to feel a lot better without all the drugs.” Anifowoshe also had a fascination for growing hair, but the drugs she had to take for her sarcoidosis caused her hair to stop growing. She found that most vitamins were big and hard to swallow and made up of mostly fillers. She decided to take her proven hair

vitamin formula to a company she knew specialized in liquid nutrition. They were skeptical because a potent liquid hair vitamin had never been done before, however, they decided to give it a try. Anifowoshe, an Herbal Therapist, graduated from Jack Yates High School and studied business at the University of
Houston. She put on her first natural hair show in Spring 2010 and invited several hairstylists in hopes that they would begin distributing her new liquid vitamin. They loved it and demanded more. What began as a quest for Anifowoshe to find some relief from her symptoms caused by
Anifowoshe is the founder and CEO of the Nzuri Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Festival and the Natural Healthy Hair Society. She is also the creator of Nzuri Hair Care and Wellness Products. There are currently 32 products in the Nzuri line. Anifowoshe’s liquid hair vitamin – Nzuri Elixir – which she created in 2010, became the flagship product for the line. “Nzuri products deal mostly with wellness and everyone is affected by wellness, so the majority of our products are for everyone,” Anifowoshe said. An elixir is defined as ‘a magical liquid that can cure illness or extend life.’ The Nzuri elixir is said to transform hair in 90 days, increasing hair growth overall by up to 200%. “Our Nzuri Elixir contains all the amino acids, everything you need for hair growth, and it tastes good,” she said. “You can drink it and put it on your face.” Nzuri’s product line includes everything

from internal products such as the 15-day colon cleanse to topical products such as hair growth stimulating shampoo. The complement to the Nzuri Elixir is the NZURIVIDA 10-in-1 Total Body Restoration Energy & Stress Tonic, which is supposed to: reduce stress, promote beautiful skin, provide natural energy, suppress appetite, burn fat, provide a sense of calm, improve focus, be a full body detox, help with immune system support and aid in elimination. Anifowoshe describes the taste as being similar to expensive wine. “When you drink it, in about five minutes you are going to feel euphoric and in a good mood. It can also be used for fresh breath and to help bleeding gums,” Anifowoshe said. “It’s powerful and most importantly, it works quickly. This product has five stars on Amazon. One customer said she can do more in one day with this product than in four days without it. This product is basically for anybody that wants to feel good.” Anifowoshe has had great success with Nzuri and her sixth Nzuri Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Festival will be held Dec. 13-14, 2014. Since its existence, the natural hair festival has outgrown two facilities and is now held at The NRG Center (formerly Reliant Center). “Nzuri is one of the few companies who have merged hair care and wellness together,” she said. “My obsession with growing my hair to be longer and healthier without using a lot of drugs allowed me to merge the two. All of Nzuri products are going to have something in it that is good for the hair and skin.” Anifowoshe stressed the importance of nutrient intake, explaining that any food a person eats goes to the organs that are essential for life, such as the heart, kidney, liver and spleen. Hair, skin and nails receive whatever is left. “A lot of people will say, ‘I don’t need vitamins. I eat well,’” she said. “You’re not born with essential vitamins; you have to add them in.”
work for their type of hair. That’s why it’s so important to learn your hair type, and the beauty managers at H-E-B can help with that,” Anifowoshe said. Since the Nzuri products have been available at H-E-B, Anifowoshe said the response from consumers has been wonderful. One lady who follows Nzuri on Facebook drove all the way from Austin to purchase products. “The second week, Nzuri was just one product away from being in the top 10 of all beauty products across the stores in the city,” she said. “Because the efficacy of Nzuri products is so high, people can feel the effects quickly – and that’s a game changer.”
Big Mama’s Lessons
Anifowoshe, who has been in the health and wellness industry for nearly 20 years, has a passion for health and wellness like no other. That passion increased when she was dealing with her symptoms from sarcoidosis. “I’m so passionate about health and wellness because I see what it can do,” Anifowoshe said. “I used to have three hours of energy a day. When I started consuming [Nzuri] products, everything changed. My kids couldn’t keep up with me.” One of the best lessons in business that still resonates with Anifowoshe today is something her grandmother taught her when she was just a child. “My [Big Mama] was blind, but she was an amazing cook. I used to help her by setting up all of her ingredients precisely. Big Mama’s motto was, ‘always use the best ingredients,’” she said. One time, Anifowoshe tried to cut corners and bought store brand ingredients, only to come home to a disapproving Big Mama who was able to tell the difference. “What I took from that was you cannot compromise on ingredients because you’re not going to get the same result. It was an awakening,” she said. “Working with Big Mama feverishly was preparing me possibly to be one of the largest African American manufacturers of wellness.”
Partnership is Game Changer for Beauty and Wellness Industry
Anifowoshe has seen a lot of success with her Nzuri product line and one of her greatest accomplishments of late is a partnership with H-E-B, one of the largest independent food retailers in the nation. Through this partnership, 13 products in the Nzuri line are available at select H-E-B Grocery Store locations in the beauty section. Consumers can visit www.hairvitaminstore.com to view all participating HE-B locations. Nzuri’s products have been available at H-E-B since February 2014. “This is what’s important about this partnership between Nzuri and H-E-B: it’s the educational component. Never before has anyone been able to walk into a grocery store – real one-stop shopping – and the beauty manager understands their needs,” Anifowoshe said. “Right now, we are training all of the beauty managers in H-E-B locations which sell Nzuri products. After the training, every H-E-B beauty manager will be able to touch my natural black hair and tell me my hair type.” Anifowoshe is an advocate for natural hair growth and Nzuri’s topical products focus on how women of African descent can grow their hair to be longer and healthier. products focus on a healthy scalp, which will yield healthy hair. The H-E-B beauty managers are all trained to be able to determine a person’s hair type quickly and correctly. The Nzuri Hair Follicle Food 61 growth oil, available at H-E-B, helps create a healthy scalp. Through the partnership, they also launched an interactive web portal – The H-E-B Healthy Hair Hub [www.HEBHealthyHairHub.com], in which visitors can participate in a forum, read/write Nzuri product reviews or any products carried by H-E-B, view different hairstyles and learn more about growing and maintaining their hair. Consumers can also view a listing of events and tastings of Nzuri liquid vitamins.
“We’ve found that by knowing your hair type, you’re better able to find products for your hair,” Anifowoshe said. “Our healthy hair hub is a place where women can learn from the Nzuri Hair Genie experts about how to become natural, how to transition and what to do once they become natural. The genies will answer questions and help them through the natural hair process.” Knowing your hair type is an integral part of determining the best regimen and which products will yield desired results. “Naturals sometimes knock a product that’s really good for other hair types. People should be very careful not to knock a product just because it may not
Anifowoshe is on schedule to earn her Trichology diploma in November. A trichologist is a hair and scalp doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating hair and scalp issues. She is also in the process of launching Nzuri vitamin supplements which will address common health problems that cause hair shedding and hair loss, blood pressure, thyroid, blood sugar and stress. Nzuri will also launch the world’s first children’s hair vitamin gummy bears, adding to their already hot-selling children’s liquid hair vitamins. “If the supplements can help you to rely less on prescription drugs, then half the battle is won,” Anifowoshe said. What began as a profound vision has now evolved into a flourishing and fulfilling business. In the fall, Anifowoshe plans on releasing her book titled, “Okay Lord I’m Natural, Now What?” “Now I have the best lab technicians, scientists and chemists to make sure that my products come together,” she said. “Wellness can give a wife back to her husband and a woman back to her children. I’m living proof of that.”

When Disaster Strikes, Will Your Pets be Safe? Preparedness Tips for Pet Parents d-mars.com News Provider
A
mericans living in areas prone to severe storms, floods, earthquakes or other natural disasters may be well aware of the philosophy, “Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.” Families with a disaster plan in place will be better equipped to stay safe and recover from an emergency. Too often, however, even the best planners forget to include provisions for the four-legged members of the family. “When disaster strikes, families may not have much time to act,” says Dr. Ellen I. Lowery, associate director of U.S. professional and veterinary affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “While organizations like Hill’s, through our Disaster Relief Network, strive to help families and pets in the wake of natural disasters, it’s important to have a disaster plan ready, including a well-stocked Pet Emergency Go-Kit with food, water and other essentials for your pet.” Dr. Lowery offers some guidance for putting your “Pet Emergency Go-Kit” together: • Include first aid supplies and a first aid guide book for pets. • Keep three-day supplies of both your pet’s favorite food – in a waterproof container – and bottled water. • Store an extra safety harness and leash because even the best-behaved pet may be frightened in an emergency, causing him to run and hide. • Include waste cleanup supplies. It’s important to
properly dispose of pet waste to avoid adding health concerns to an already difficult situation. • If your pet is on any medications, keep a few days’ worth in your kit. Also include an up-to-date copy of medical records, as well as contact information for your veterinarian and additional veterinary and pet care organizations in your area. • You should have a brief, written explanation of your pet’s feeding routine, personality and any behavioral issues. In a disaster, your pet may receive care from someone who doesn’t know him as well as you do. • Don’t forget comfort – include a few toys and a favorite blanket to keep your pet comfortable. Keep your Pet Go-Kit somewhere readily accessible in an emergency. Be sure your pet always wears his/her identification – a microchip or collar ID tag with up-to-date information may help reunite you with your pet if you become separated in the confusion of a disaster scene. If an impending disaster requires you to evacuate, take your pet with you. Be aware of your pet’s favorite hiding places so you’ll know where to look when you’re in a hurry to leave. Before disaster strikes, identify locations where you could take your pet during an evacuation; not all disaster shelters for people will be open to pets. Look for pet-friendly hotels or motels, or ask relatives and friends if
they could accommodate you and your pets. Despite your best efforts, it may not be possible to take your pet with you. To alert first responders to the possible presence of a pet in the house, place a pet rescue decal on your front door or window. It should include your veterinarian’s contact information and any special notes about your pet’s personality or medical needs. Carry a picture of your pet in case you become separated. “Pet displacement during natural disasters is such a serious issue, the federal government has even enacted standards for evacuating and transporting pets during disasters,” Dr. Lowery says. “One widely quoted report cited Hurricane Katrina as an example of what can happen to pets during a natural disaster. The report said more than 200,000 pets were displaced during the storm, and the majority of them were never reunited with their families.” Last year, Hill’s launched the Disaster Relief Network, a first-of-its-kind national system that allows the company to quickly coordinate pet food deliveries in response to natural disasters. Since its inception, the network has delivered free food to more than 50 shelters and veterinary clinics in response to floods, forest fires, tornados and mudslides. To learn more about the network, visit http://www. hillspet.com/foodshelter-love/emergency-help.html. (BPT)

Cover and chill up to 2 hours. 3. Combine flour, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, and baking powder in a large bowl; cut butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender or two forks until crumbly. 4. Whisk together eggs, sour cream and vanilla until blended; add to flour mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Drop dough by lightly greased 1/3 cupfuls onto a lightly greased baking sheet. (Coat cup with vegetable cooking spray after each drop.) 5. Bake at 450° for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden. 6. Malocclusion and Periodontal Disease Healthier Gums Properly aligned teeth are easier to brush and floss than crowded or crooked teeth. Properly positioned teeth can help gums “fit” more tightly around them, which may lead to better periodontal health.4
Improved Hygiene
M
With good oral hygiene, the chances of having plaque retention, tooth decay and periodontal disease can be reduced.
By Dr. Ka-Ron Y. Wade Contributing Writer
alocclusion affects 74% of American adults.1 If you have malocclusion, it may affect your periodontal health, because it is difficult to remove plaque when teeth are not aligned. Periodontal disease can begin as gum redness or bleeding while brushing your teeth or using dental floss, and you may notice halitosis or bad breath. If not treated, gum inflammation can become worse, leading to soft tissue damage, receding gums, the formation of pockets between teeth and gums, bone loss and eventually, tooth loss.
Decreased Risk of Abnormal Wear and Trauma Wear and Trauma Poorly aligned teeth can also create unnatural stress and pressure on teeth and jaws. Teeth that are subject to excessive pressure can develop chipping and notches at the gum line called abfractions. Premature wear can lead to poor root support, loose teeth and eventually, tooth loss.3
The Progression of Periodontal Disease
Straight Teeth are Healthier Teeth
When teeth are crowded, plaque with harmful bacteria can attach to the tooth surface down to the bottom of the pocket.2,3 Plaque can be difficult to remove from crowded areas because it is difficult to brush and floss here. Bacteria can cause gum tissue surrounding the tooth to degrade, and if not treated, result in bone loss.
Straight, properly aligned teeth can help you avoid the negative effects of periodontal disease.
Properly aligned teeth also reduce the risk of expensive procedures required to repair the effects of abnormal force, such as tooth chipping, breaking or wear; and can be less stressful on the supporting jaw bone and joints.
Malocclusion: A Risk to Overall Health Severe periodontal infection, if untreated, may increase the risk for atherosclerosis-induced conditions such as coronary heart disease and stroke, complications of diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes and respiratory diseases.5
Systemic Problems 1. Bacteria forms a film underneath the gums, particularly where teeth are misaligned. Gum pockets form, further trapping bacteria and debris. 2. Bacteria inflames the gum tissues and kill gum tissue cells and can invade connective tissue and blood vessels. 3. Your immune system creates white blood cells and proteins to fight the inflammation.
4. The combination of bacteria, toxins, white blood cells and acute phase proteins damages the cells that line your coronary arteries, resulting in plaque and leading to hardening of the arteries.6,7

It Takes a Village: Make a Difference in the Community in Which You Live By Lisa Bradley Contributing Writer
A
re you aware that nutritional wealth outweighs the cost of making healthy choices a way of life? Oftentimes people complain about not having a platform to get and be healthy. There are communities equipped to warrant that we no longer have that as an excuse. From community parks, splash pads, bike and jogging trails and the list goes on – there is no longer a justification to not be healthier than the day before and it begins right in the area in which you live; as well as other options that can be implemented as a community. Adults as well as children suffer from obesity and various diseases due to poor choices. Many times, people decide to ignore choosing healthy alternatives due to them not understanding the process of getting healthy. Additionally, many people fail to realize the tools which are readily available to them to get fit. Our daily routines are seemingly hectic and we are weighed down with juggling family life, work, school, etc., so when choosing a meal, the easiest option entails a swift order at the drive-thru window. Choosing to eat a balanced diet and opting to exercise on a weekly basis will certify that one’s journey to health and nutrition is forthcoming. In today’s society, Americans center everything on food – our way of celebrating no matter the occasion. We have learned that food will somehow make things better: a learned behavior from childhood. We were taught to “make a happy plate” by being forced to eat everything that was on the plate. In 2013 alone, statistics revealed a staggering 40 percent of children that devote their time to television and video games, hindering them from an active lifestyle. Over 70 percent, based on the high school youth behavior survey, fail to be active at least one hour each day for the entire week, which is mind boggling. Chaotic lifestyles, scheduled along with technology, have definitely produced a fat and unhealthy society. Obesity and disease is on the rise, making healthier decisions imperative and ensuring a prolonged vigorous existence. The obesity epidemic has no prejudices as it affects us all. Tweaking your diet and eliminating the foods that are harmful to your body is crucial. A healthy lifestyle can be challenging, but with hard work and determination, weight loss is attainable. A great rule of thumb for adults who are deemed overweight or obese is to focus on losing approxi-
mately 10 percent of his or her existing weight in a time span of six months. Implementing changes can protect you from developing diabetes, cancer, asthma, heart disease or its predecessors, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It also controls weight issues and alleviates symptoms of worry and depression along with improving one’s mood. As a people, we are killing ourselves, one bite at a time. Our fork defines who we are and what we have become. It is imperative that we all take a stance to take our lives back and it begins with each of us to do our part. It takes a village in order for everyone to be successful in this journey. Obtaining a healthy lifestyle is one of the hardest things one can ensue; however, when support, accountability, knowledge and determination is available, failure will never be an option as long as the tools of success are possessed. As a community, one has to remember that there is no “I,” but “We” as division will always hinder one’s achievements, but when unity comes to fruition, triumph is inevitable. There is nothing greater than having support to overcome an obstacle from likeminded individuals or someone that has endured
your very struggle. Having a community of individuals striving for the same goal, which is to live a life of longevity and not die, is idyllic as that is where inspiration comes to fruition. A person is rarely persuaded by the words that are spoken but instead by actions that are performed. Leading by example is imperative as one can easily follow a person that is walking the talk. Friendly competitions are a great way to get family and friends involved with getting healthy as opposed to force feeding them with hummus and carrot sticks. People often find starting this journey is correlated with giving up so much versus gaining more than they could ever lose. When it comes to healthcare, there is always a great cause. Promoting a healthy community is inevitable as we are our sisters’ and brothers’ keeper. When one fails, we all fail; however, promoting awareness and simple community involvement would not only benefit us, but those around us. Consider starting a gardening club, planting a tree, promoting a walk for a cause, starting a softball league in the neighborhood, swim teams or something as simple as a neighborhood fun day that consists of knowing your neighbors and playing a friendly “old school” game of kickball. The possibilities are endless and remember to involve area schools and churches. These are great beginnings, especially for those that are suffering and truly need a helping hand. When people see others that care and want to do and be better, the attitude becomes contagious. When the community in which we live is healthy, it encourages everyone to live a healthier life. Unfortunately for many, high medical expenses, health challenges and the risks of getting diabetes and other diseases makes them realize that making a lifestyle change is not an option, but a requirement. It makes sense for everyone to get involved and work diligently to promote awareness, solutions and outlets for everyone in the community to have an opportunity to live. We perish for the lack of knowledge! Some people really have no clue how to be healthy and it is our responsibility to ensure that each and every person knows better in order for them to do better in this journey we call life. Knowing the benefits and now having the tools to make a lifestyle change and implementing a community effort to be healthier, wouldn’t you make the necessary modifications, involve your neighborhood and create an outlet for a life of longevity and nutritional wealth?

It is our job, my job and your job to bridge that gap. When I was growing up in Chicago, I knew at a very early age that I wanted to major in healthcare. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the lives of my people by researching information and then passing it along. It wasn’t until I got to college did I know how I was going to get the job done. While studying Health Care Administration at Texas Southern University, I began to become intrigued with the Centers for Disease Control
(CDC). What fascinates me about the CDC is that they are the organization that tracks diseases within a certain race, gender and economic status. I began to see that Afro-Americans lead the statistics in some of the top categories of health-related illnesses.
I discovered that if I could just get the word out in a preventive state, I could make the difference in someone’s life. I chose the road less traveled and began to speak, and teach on health-related illnesses within the community. I went on to start
my own nonprofit Reaching To Empower Women Daily (R2EWD). I decided that I would take the lead in Houston with one of the major diseases within our community: obesity. I partnered with the Michelle Obama “Let’s Move Initiative” where I educate parents, children, schools and churches on the importance of giving our children a healthy diet and exercise regimen. I then became a “Hip Hop Ambassador” in which I can use song and dance to get the message out about combating obesity. I just recently took the challenge with “Shape Up Houston” to join the Million Pound Challenge. I don’t look at what I do as a job but as a calling – to get out and spread the word through educating our young people. I take pride in being an AfroAmerican and I want the generations after me to live a healthier longer life, despite statistics. I charge you as well to step up and take the challenge with me and thousands of others to educate our community. Healthy Body – Healthy Mind – Healthy Spirit –
You By Dezra White, M.D.

hat constitutes wellness? Is there a magic formula? A pill? A supplement? A gym? A GURU? I do not have an answer. What fits? Is there a glove for every hand? New song: “Because I’m happy”…good. Old song: “Don’t worry, be happy”...I’m not too sure about this. In taking pictures, you may have a snapshot or you can get a panoramic view of the entire landscape. The same occurs with your health, your mind and your spirit. A snapshot or the entire panorama represents you. Snapshots: How-to diets, Infomercials, Weight loss surgery, Measuring tapes, Weight scales, Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Bally’s, 24 Hour Fitness, Relations, Friends, Marriage, Kids, Divorce, Job, Supervisor, Religion, Culture, Food (fuel), Money, Sleep, Illness, Death, etc. THIS IS YOU. YOU must have a positive attitude regarding all aspects of your life, a panoramic view of your life. YOU must be the one in control. Are YOU pleasing others and not pleasing yourself? Negativity breeds negativity. Success or failure? Again, I do not have the answer for you. YOU have the answer for yourself. The answer is all around you… the good, the bad and the ugly. What do YOU choose? What are the priori-
ties in your life? What has meaning, and what consumes you? Look in the mirror before your day begins and look in the mirror after you day has ended. Were you prepared for the day? Did you accomplish your goals for that day? Look around you. There are ads everywhere, saying they have the answer for all your needs. Remember they are trying to sell you their product. That is their job. That is how they make their living. They are trying to make a profit to place in their pocket to live their life. Ask the question, what does it profit you? ENVIRONMENT: HEALTHY Home, Work, Religion, Partner, Children, Financial responsibilities, Hobbies outside of the home and Hobbies outside of work; Reaching a balance between being dependent and independent of your partner. Do you NEED someone to take care of you, or can you stand on your own two feet? What do YOU bring to the table of your job? To the table of your relationship? It’s like walking a balance beam. Marriage or a solid relationship should be where you care for one another. Continue to take responsibility for yourself. The person who cares for you will also criticize you because they care. They are there in the good times and bad times supporting you. You are not alone. Are YOU fit? A football player weighing 300 lbs. is fit while playing football. But at age 40 weighing 300lbs, is he fit? Is that thin model on the runway fit? Discipline, consistency, commitment…is this within you? What is your BMI? Can you walk up a f light of steps? How far can you run? How far can you walk? HEALTHY MIND and Healthy Body go hand in hand. A weak mind

CONTINUED from page 16 can destroy a strong body and a weak body can destroy a strong mind. Stay on that balance beam. What is your spirituality? Is there a guardian angel watching over you? What prayer do you say in the morning and at night before you go to sleep? Who counsels you regarding your spirituality? What do you obtain when you go to church? What do you learn? Exercise is good for you. As our first lady has stated, start moving. It must be enjoyable, YOU must be consistent, YOU must be committed, and it will be enjoyable and pleasurable. An excuse is I do not have time. You have time to do those things you want to do. You make the time. As soon as you wake up, you begin moving… keep moving! Remember, children emulate their parents. Do you want your children to be like you or better? Be careful of this “Virtual World” that has “invaded”our lives. Let go of that device you hold so tightly in your hand. How much do you depend upon that device? “I’m connected.” Connected to what? Do you really have a need for 300 “friends?” What is happening to the social skills of society? You can text, but you cannot have a personal conversation with your friend, your mate, your family or your boss. What have you gained, if you lose? “I fell in love over the internet.” Really??? I fell in love with my wife by talking, dating and spending quality time together. I noticed her body language while talking and I noticed her smile. We talked on the phone when we were not together. I heard her laughter and her sighs. HEALTHY BODY: Yes, it is definitely good to be moving. What is good for YOU – the gym, aerobics class, walking, jogging, basketball, golf, etc.?? Check out Sports Authority and Academy. YOU have to decide what is best for you. Are YOU happy and committed with what you choose? Does this fit into your schedule...time?? Again – committed, consistent, pleasurable and enjoyable. Are you better with instructions, a group or solitary – YOU decide. But do something. How often? At least three times per week. But this is your decision. Also, as part of your exercise program, please remember that you consistently consider stretching as an
intrical part of your program (Yoga). Stretch your legs, arms, neck, back, etc. This strengthens your bones and increases your f lexibility. Don’t be that person who shuff les when walking. Strut your stuff. Also, your body needs rest and sleep. Do you sleep six to eight hours a night? Do YOU take a day off from the gym to restore your body and muscles? FUEL CONSUMPTION: This begins with what you consumed while being fed by your parents and your Culture. Also, your children learn good eating habits from YOU, their parents. Do you cook, or do you take your kids to fast food restaurants for meals? I see too many kids eating Cheetos purchased by their parents. Eating habits, good or bad, begin at home – YOU. I embrace all the different cultural foods in Houston, some good, some bad – Barbecue, Curried Lamb, Jambalaya, Steaks, Enchiladas, Soul Food, Hamburgers, Pizza, Brazilian, Thai, Seafood, Cajun, Delicatessen, Italian and Frenchy’s Chicken. Check out the restaurants in the Yellow Pages/Online. Have you and your partner ever shared an entrée or shared a dessert? You cut calories, fat and cost. Also, YOU have to watch your salt consumption. The salt shaker on the table is not necessary. What grocery stores are in your neighborhood? Do YOU and your family have access to fresh produce (fruits and vegetables) and choice and quality meats, etc? I am sometimes amazed at the amount of unhealthy snacks individuals place in their shopping carts. What do YOU choose for your cart while shopping at HEB? Remember YOU are training your kids eating habits and maintaining your own habits – good or bad. MODERATION. Fat, protein and carbohydrates are all essential. Balance these as to onethird each. All are necessary. DRUGS: Medicinal drugs are great when prescribed by your physician and YOU follow the directions. It is no good when YOU do not follow directions, misuse or abuse your medication. If you need pain, medication is good. Use, do not abuse. Psychotropic drugs prescribed are good for your mental well-being. Look in your medicine cabinet. YOU decide. Do other family members have access to your medicines? Do your kids sneak

Look in the mirror before your day begins and look in the mirror after you day has ended. Were you prepared for the day? Did you accomplish your goals for that day? CONTINUED from page 18 and take your pills? Do YOU ask your doctor for multiple refills? I am amazed how people buy “drugs” off the streets. Bubba is not your friend. Is his drug company approved by the FDA? Pay for illegal drugs, pay the price: Brain Damage, Death, Jail or Incapacitated for life. ALCOHOL: Good or bad. Used wisely, it is good and enjoyable. Abuse it, and then YOU will pay the price for such abuse. Moderation. What can YOU tolerate? What is your limit? SMOKING: Bad, Bad, Bad tobacco. Colorado and the State of Washington now have legalized marijuana. They are now experiencing secondary problems. Proceed with caution. YOU must make the decision. Just do not smoke. Finally, quit looking for instant success in life. It does not exist. I am amazed how some people want to “look good” for Christmas, Easter, Reunions, etc., in six months. I have always asked how do you want to look one year from now? And if you make that goal, are you going to stop what
you did to accomplish this goal and go back to your old ways—give up? No matter what age, I have asked my patients where do you want to be five years from now – health wise and spiritually. Start now on this five-year goal. After that, go to the next fiveyear interval. YOU continue on this five-year interval: Age 20-25, 30-35, 40-45, 50-55, 60-65, 70 and so on. Stop trying to accomplish success in one year in all aspects of your life. How long did your education take? High school, college, professional school, or the school of hard knocks. How many years did you invest or are investing to accomplish your goal (career) in life? YOU must consider your health and spirit also during these years. Each of YOU has your own story to tell. YOU stuck to it to accomplish your goal (career). So stick to a healthy lifestyle also. It is not instant. How long will it take? Only YOU have the answer. Talk to that person in the mirror. Healthy Mind – Healthy Body – Healthy Spirit YOU, not the GURU

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Runners

or those who are regular runners and in overall good shape, it may seem odd to consider chiropractic care, but taking care of yourself when you’re healthy can be the best way to avoid future injuries. Gone are the days when chiropractic care was needed just for aches, injuries or pain. Many athletes are turning to chiropractic care on a regular basis to maintain optimal health and fitness. If your body is perfectly and absolutely aligned, then you might be the most unique person on the planet. Almost no one has perfect alignment. Getting aligned and staying aligned allows your body to handle the hard pounding it takes when you run. The high impact of running can lead to long-term pain and injury if you continue to run without a properly aligned core. Myriad issues are likely to occur for most people after years of running with poor alignment: pain in the feet, shoulders, lower back or even pinched nerves. In most instances, people don’t seek chiropractic care until injuries begin, and by that time, they require rehabilitation instead of injury prevention. Dr. Christopher Lauer, LifeClinic chiropractor at Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company, has seen many runners come in for both injury prevention and injury care. “The first thing we do with a patient is a thorough chiropractic examination, postural evaluation and functional examination,” Lauer says. “Through these exams, we often find deficiencies or problems with biomechanics.” Runners are particularly prone to posterior chain weakness or lower crossed syndrome, both of which
require adjustments for long-term correction. “Some of the most common injuries from running I see are overuse injuries including plantar fasciitis, shin splints, ankle sprains, knee pain and hip pain,” Lauer says. “By being focused on function, and not necessarily pain, we can catch injuries before they happen and get an athlete back on track faster than if they have sustained one.” Preventive chiropractic care offers runners many advantages. Joints can’t flow through the full range of motion when misaligned and since runners rely heavily on their joints, preventive care can improve running experiences indefinitely. Ways chiropractic care helps runners: • Improved coordination • Better reaction time
• Increased balance • Heightened accuracy • Amplified precision • Stronger muscles Chiropractors can perform a full evaluation on your current alignment, offer personalized adjustments and set you on a course of optimal athleticism. “Depending on the condition of the individual, we also do rehabilitative therapy or posture correction to ensure a longerlasting result from the care that we give.” Lauer says. “We find people are much happier with this approach, which leads to stronger athletes and families.” The running gear you choose (shoes, caps, tanks, socks, sunglasses, etc.) are meant for comfort and power – why not choose to comfort your body with regular visits to the chiropractor, too?
