kin is more than the largest organ in the human body. It’s one of the first things people notice when you walk into a room… it can be one of the determining factors in a person’s confidence level…and for some people – such as actors and models – it can be a vital part of their career. Minorities often face unique chal-

& QA

d-mars.com: How did you become interested in the field of dermatology? Dr. Moore: I was a pharmacist and wanted to use that knowledge. Dermatology allows for more use of my pharmaceutical knowledge with making creams and formulating it into effective products for the skin, especially African Americans. There are so few black dermatologists, and I also wanted to achieve my goal of becoming a dermatologist.

d-mars.com: Tell me about Moore Unique Skin Care, LLC. Dr. Moore: It was founded more than 15 years ago in an effort to

distribute the technology in products that I developed to the world because I am unable to treat each individual directly. I have six U.S. patents that cover the products I developed, which are truly unique and effective.

d-mars.com: Tell me more about your business, Moore Unique Dermatology & Spa. What services do you offer? Dr. Moore: We treat adults and children from one week old to 110 years old. We do some cosmetic procedures such as removal of unsightly facial moles and neck skin tags with a laser to painlessly remove these growths. We also have a new device that is like a laser, but it is Radio

Frequency (RF) technology that tightens the skin to get rid of wrinkles, sagging neck skin, cellulite on the hips and much more. It is called EndyMed Radio Frequency Device. We remove keloids from the earlobes and we are also able to prevent their reoccurrence by pretreating the keloid prior to removing it.

d-mars.com: In your experience, what have you found to be the biggest issues plaguing African Americans and minorities regarding skin care? Dr. Moore: I would have to say razor bumps in men and hair loss in black women. We have a very

lenges with their skin and may be more prone to certain issues than their counterparts of other races, such as keloids or razor bumps, for example. Who better to help address the skin care issues of the African American community than an African American dermatologist? After completing his residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., Dr. Milton D. Moore began his career as a dermatologist in Houston in 1985. He started his own

effective treatment for hair loss in women, known as folliculitis induced alopecia. Discoloration of the skin is a common problem that we effectively treat also.

d-mars.com: Can you discuss hair loss in black women? How common is it? How can it be combatted? Dr. Moore: This type of hair loss is an epidemic in black women, resulting from hair weaves, glue, improper use of wigs and hair products that facilitate the bacterial overgrowth in the scalp – leading to a clinical and sometimes subclinical infection of scalp.

private practice, Moore Unique Laser Surgery and Dermatologic Care, which has evolved into Moore Unique Dermatology & Spa. In addition to being a successful business owner, Dr. Moore is also an inventor and developer and holds numerous patents in regards to his skin care line. While his practice generally focuses on the treatment of minorities and the dermatological conditions and diseases that disproportionately affect at-risk populations, Dr. Moore’s products are also designed for the general population.

As the founder and president of Moore Unique Skin Care, LLC, Dr. Moore is responsible for the company, which develops, produces and markets a line of skin care products designed and targeted toward the maintenance and treatment of dermatological conditions and diseases. In 1990, he patented and developed the Moore Technique Shaving System and received the only patent for treatment of Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB), commonly known as razor bumps. Through his research of PFB, Dr. Moore became so knowledgeable

about the condition that he was often sought out by journalists and lawyers to share his knowledge about razor bumps and other skin and hair issues. In fact, Dr. Moore’s been called to testify as an expert witness in employment discrimination cases in which men have challenged an employer’s ‘No Beard’ policy, with employees claiming they should not be fired for wearing facial hair because razor bumps prevented them from shaving. Dr. Moore is not only passionate about his profession, but he has a deep concern for the disparities minorities face, which prompted him to form the Foundation for Health and

Dermatology Disparities (FHDD) in 2009. The foundation’s purpose is to provide public service information as well as serve as a resource for health care professionals and treatment centers. Additionally, the FHDD’s goal is to heighten awareness of specific conditions and educate minorities and health care providers as well as dispel myths and rumors about related issues which impact minority communities – leading to ignorance, lack of understanding and in some cases, death and/or life-threatening diseases. Though his practice keeps him extremely busy, Dr. Moore took some time to discuss with d-mars.com everything from why he became a dermatologist to where he sees his company in 10 years.

d-mars.com: Many African American men suffer from razor bumps. Why do you think this is so common? What are some remedies for this?

Insurance companies do not pay for the removal because they are cosmetic, but the cost is reasonable. Dr. Moore: Sixty percent of black men suffer and 25 percent severely suffer from razor bumps. Coarse hairs and curly hairs are the problem and the angle in which the hairs exit the skin around the neck area can contribute to the problem. By using the Razor Rash Relief Cream, it can help to combat infections and exfoliate the skin around the hair, Source: Wikipedia

d-mars.com: Please explain what Dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN) moles are. How common are they and how do you help treat them? d-mars.com: Ten years from now, where do you see yourself as well as your business? Dr. Moore: My 10-year plan is to purchase the Gillette company and be the largest razor manufacturer in the world, serving all countries, especially third-world countries. I plan to eliminate the problems associated with black men shaving globally.

The Best Stress Management System According to the

%

Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention

A

By Ebony S. Muhammad Contributing Writer

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 50 percent of Blacks in America are overweight or obese and more than 70 percent are women who are overweight by 25 pounds or more. In a 2009 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that African-Americans have a much higher incidence of heart failure than other races; being overweight is one of the four risk factors with the strongest predictor. “Many African-American women view being obese as part of their culture,” said Thaddeus Bell, M.D., a family practitioner in South Carolina in an online interview for icyou.com. Besides the obvious yet extremely important factor of diet and nutrition, there is another factor in weight gain that is killing the Black community – especially Black women – at alarming rates. It is best known as stress. Stress researcher Shelly Taylor says, “Black women appear to handle stress somewhat differently from men or Caucasian women. Men are more likely to do battle with whomever or whatever is causing stress, or they simply remove themselves from the situation. Caucasian women seem more likely to find stress relief by devoting time to their children or seeking support and friendship from others.” Taylor calls this a “tend and befriend” response. Terrie M. Williams, publisher of Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We’re Not Hurting writes, “deep down, I think I couldn’t shake messages from childhood like, ‘keep your feelings to yourself’ and ‘don’t air your dirty laundry (especially in front of white folks).’” According to The American Institute of Stress (AIS), 60 percent of all human illnesses and diseases are brought on by stress. For example, stress increases the risk for heart disease by 40 percent and 50 percent for strokes of which Black women lead in both. Forty percent of stressed individuals overeat or eat unhealthy, which explains some of why Black women lead in obesity. The AIS also states that extreme stress (i.e. divorce and job loss) reduces the grey matter in regions of the brain tied to emotion and physiological functions, which can lead to future psychiatric problems. Did you know that massage therapy increases levels of available serotonin (a neurotransmitter that influences mood, behavior, appetite, sleep patterns and blood pressure) and dopamine (a neurotransmitter that controls emotional responses and the ability to experience pleasure and

nearly

who are overweight

pain) in the brain? Increased levels of serotonin and dopamine decrease significant levels of stress and depression and elevate positive moods.

Note: There are many healthy fruits and vegetables that regulate appropriate levels of both serotonin and dopamine in the brain. As a licensed massage and spa therapist, I can attest that 90 percent of clients receive massages as a result of some form of stress. The other 10 percent are avid bodybuilders or athletes seeking sports massages and there are those seeking medical massages from a recent injury. Massage therapy is specifically designed to reduce stress. No matter what level of stress, massage has a guaranteed positive effect on the recipient. Within the very first session, clients express feelings of relaxation they had yet to experience in years. For those who are experiencing some form of insomnia due to stress, some can schedule evening appointments as a way of naturally preparing their mind and body for a good night’s rest. Those who are grieving the loss of a loved one can certainly benefit from therapeutic massage. Coupled with aromatherapy, which is the scientific and skilled application of essential oils to promote emotional well-being and relaxation, massage therapy has the ability to alleviate emotional and physical stress on a continuous basis with only positive side effects – harmony. For those suffering from frequent headaches and migraines, massage therapy and aromatherapy is the perfect combination to naturally and safely ease its debilitating pain. If three of four doctor’s visits are stress-related, try visiting a massage therapist who can, with the use of the science of essential oils and therapeutic touch, naturally reduce stress levels and maintain healthy levels of peace and harmony. (Note: If taking medication, please be sure to consult your physician before receiving massage therapy.) Ebony S. For the third consecutive year, d-mars.com hosted the event recognizing the city’s living legends, community heroes and trailblazers, as well as super, top and up-and-coming HMWPs. The audience was moved as they listened to testimonials from Living Legends Dr.

I thoroughly enjoyed the people that were honored. I think the great networking opportunities at the awards ceremony and those offered through d-mars.com are unbelievable.”

Dr. Milton D. Moore, Moore Unique Dermatology & Spa “I think the Top 50 Black HMWP Awards Ceremony went extremely well. I think it highlights the significance of not just doctors, but people who bring about wellness and health care to consumers. What’s important is that there be a holistic approach to health care and wellness. It doesn’t do any good to have medications and prescriptions if you don’t have a well-rounded way of being well.”

So-called “pregnancy gingivitis” affects most pregnant women to some degree and generally begins to surface as early as the second month of pregnancy. Hearing Aid Express Addresses Hearing Loss Locally and Abroad

By Valerie Jones Associate Editor

F

or 25 years, Hearing Aid Express, a locally-owned hearing aid company, has been in operation with 11 locations in Texas – six being in Houston. President and CEO Brad Brumback has been with the company since 1998. Hearing Aid Express is able to accommodate individuals with mild hearing loss – typically high frequency loss – up to and including profound losses. Though the company is not equipped to help the deaf community or extreme cases of hearing loss, they do have a group of medical doctors and other area resources whom they can refer to clients. In addition to providing hearing screening and hearing tests, Hearing Aid Express selects, fits, sells and programs hearing aids. Hearing Aid Express also performs hearing aid repairs – onsite and at the Houston laboratory. “Misconceptions about hearing aids abound. Many people still think hearing aids are some ‘big thing that sits on your ear and squeals,’” Brumback said. In fact, Brumback explained most hearing aids are so small that they are barely noticeable or downright invisible. “I think the biggest conception is that many people with hearing loss figure they will just ‘deal with it,’ not recognizing the human cost of not addressing their situation,” he said. “Study after study shows the negative consequences of untreated hearing loss, including social

isolation, lower satisfaction with life, a possible link to earlier onset of Alzheimer’s and even lower earning power for those still working.” Hearing Aid Express aims to clear up a lot of misinformation about hearing aids, and sincerely tries to help people cut through the ‘clutter’ and get to what is going to be best for them, their lifestyle and their budget. “We see firsthand over and over how people’s lives are changed when their hearing loss is corrected,” Brumback said. “Hearing birds singing for the first time in years, being able to talk with their grandchild on the phone and going to lunch with friends when they had not previously because they couldn’t hear what was going on and felt uncomfortable…there are frequently tears and hugs from clients when they rediscover what the world of hearing is really like and so many say, ‘I wish I had done something sooner.’”

Dr. Lacey Brooks, Hearing Aid Express audiologist and Houston area manager, has represented Hearing Aid Express as a frequent guest of “Great Day Houston” with Deborah Duncan. The company’s presence in Houston is far-reaching and they have taken care of the hearing needs of locals including Coach Bum Phillips, Marvin Zindler, Thom Dickerson and former mayor Louie Welch in the past as well as former Astros player, manager and current broadcaster Larry Dierker and radio legend Jim Pruett. Hearing Aid Express is not only proud to serve the hearing needs of the Houston community and the State of Texas, but their philanthropic efforts have allowed them to help those globally. Since 2002, Hearing Aid Express has worked closely with Hearing Aid for Latin America (HALA), a nonprofit organization that has dispensed more than 6,000 hearing aids and earnolds on people, primarily children, in Latin American countries including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Chile and Nicaragua. The group recently took 200 hearing aids to children in Guadalajara, Mexico and the Lake Chapala area. Their next trip is planned for the Dominican Republic in which Hearing Aid Express will set up an earnold laboratory. “Since most of our fittings are done on children and children grow quickly, the lab will allow the local staff to continue to help the children while HALA volunteers are not there,” Brumback said. “The goal is to have the clinic be self-sustaining, with HALA and Hearing Aid Express sending supplies so that the children can get hearing help year-round.”

Spiced Pumpkin Cupcakes

n a hurry? Canned puréed pumpkin is a good option if you’re short on time. A half-cup serving is loaded with nutrients, including four grams of filling fiber. Just be sure to buy 100 percent pure pumpkin, not sugary pumpkin pie filling.

Ingredients

3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour (or allpurpose) 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/8 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar 1 large egg 1/2 cup canned or pureed, steamed pumpkin 1/4 cup plain yogurt (not nonfat) Frosting: 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 6 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchâtel), at room temperature 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup confectioners’ sugar Pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Make cupcakes: Preheat oven to 375°F. Line 24 mini muffin cups with paper liners. In a bowl, whisk first five ingredients. 2. In a separate bowl, using an electric mixer at medium-high speed, beat butter and sugar until light, three minutes. Whisk egg and pumpkin in a bowl, then beat into butter mixture, scraping down sides of bowl. With mixer on low speed, add flour mixture and yogurt alternately, beginning and ending with flour. Spoon one heaping tbsp. batter into each muffin cup. 3. Bake until cupcakes spring back when touched lightly, 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool in tin on a wire rack for five minutes, then remove from pan and let cool completely on rack. 4. Make frosting: Beat all ingredients with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until light, three minutes. Spread onto cupcakes and serve.

Putting Your Best Face Forward

By Lisa Bradley

Contributing Writer

L

et’s face it, putting your best face forward can mean a plethora of things depending upon the individual. For many, putting their best face forward entails striving to do and be better – even in the midst of adversity. More often than not, people become stagnant and fail to realize the importance of not allowing life to keep them immobile. Chaotic lifestyles, schedules, health woes and life occurrences can cause agony for anyone. It’s a reality that many people know all too well. We all face misfortune at some point in our lives and rather than creating a smokescreen to diffuse the reality of what may be going on in life, it is imperative that we find outlets to get help when and where needed as well as sharing because we will soon realize we are not alone in this journey called life. Have you ever had to put on a brave face? Have you ever been hurting or lost in the midst of your own lunacy? Have you blamed others for where you are in life? Do you look like the life you have been dealt? Individuals frequently lose sight of the importance of not allowing lives to not only deplete them of their energy, but their vigor and passion of life somehow gets lost in the shuffle as well. While it is easier said than done, I realize all too well how financial hardship, health challenges and day-to-day life can be more overwhelming and seemingly too much to bear. Knowing so, it behooves us all to find our footing and know that God will never leave nor forsake us and it is in He that we breathe and have our being. Through it all, we become living testimonies for others to know that they too can make it. It is evident that we cannot escape life’s happenings which force us to move forward, despite what we may be dealing with; however, we must remember that we should always put our best face forward because regardless of how bad we feel, life may be for us. There will always be someone worse off than we are. We must remember that some of our life struggles are self-inflicted and until we realize that, we can never come to a place of healing in order for the possibility of putting our best face forward to come to fruition. We must always take ownership of our actions; good, bad or indifferent. Our challenges and struggles are never the same as when we are in the midst of our tests; it seems like we are in it alone, which is never the case. God will never leave nor forsake us, so even in the midst of suffering we are to move forward knowing that we will never walk alone in Him. Knowing so, one may opt to put their best face forward by knowing, believing and channeling their faith in knowing everything happens for a reason. While we may be in the midst of a storm, this too shall pass, and joy cometh in the morning. Having a relationship with God has afforded many to heal from their illnesses, become financially astute, have a peace that surpasses all

understanding and the list goes on. Even if we are still in the midst of our said storm, we have the confidence in knowing that is not the end of our story…it is still being written. Some may opt to work out and strive to maintain a healthier lifestyle because doing so promotes the possibility of doing better. Taking one’s health seriously and choosing it over hard times will always prevail. When you know better, you are expected to do better and implementing a healthy lifestyle for you and those you love will, without a doubt, be a great step in the right direction in putting one’s best face forward. Others may opt to look the part. It never fails, getting all dolled up makes anyone feel better. When you look good, you feel good!! My grandmother made sure we were ironed up and creased down wherever we went because we were a representation of her. It’s amazing that while I’m from the old school, many have their own version of getting dressed to the nine…whatever that means to you, do it often! Make time to dress to impress; first impressions are lasting. Do it for you and for no one else. When you are pristine from head to toe, it affords self-confidence and an indescribable feeling which inspires one to seek opportunities they may not have otherwise. Seeing is believing, and no matter one’s state of mind, if others can see a well put together individual that is striving to do and be better by every sense of the word, it will strengthen others to believe they, too, can do what is outwardly impossible. Now I realize that dressing up may not be likely, depending upon your livelihood; however, even the simplest things can make a difference. When ladies are made up and men are shaven and in their Sunday best, even in the middle of the week, it appears to give an extra pep in their step. Everyone’s interpretations are different, but do what makes you feel great. Doing so

gives others the notion that they can also accomplish the unattainable. From taking up a trade or a hobby to going to school, or for many, going back to school are also ways to put one’s best face forward. Education is a powerful tool and we are to never stop learning. No matter how educated one might be, there is still something of which they aren’t knowledgeable. It’s never too late to learn – as long as you have breath, there is something that you can do to be better a better you, which affords the one you love to strive to do the same. Getting out of your comfort zone and learning something new is often feared because it’s unknown. People opt to distance themselves from opportunities that could offer them limitless futures. Keep in mind when you get out of your comfort zone, that is when the miracle is achieved. It’s such a great testament when one has been through not only the fire, but the storm and rain, yet they are able to walk away looking unscathed. We don’t always have to look like what we have been through. When we are able to remain intact after dealing with life’s woes, we become a living testimony that lets others know they can be better because of their past life struggles and in the end, we can be better for them. Not wallowing in our wounds of life gives others inspiration in knowing they can put their best face forward and it will allow them to lend a helping hand to know that our circumstance does not have to define who and/or what they become. No matter what method you opt to take to put your best faces forward, do something! Remember, someone is always watching your every move and you may not even be aware that you have an audience. Make sure you are leading by example. People are visual and may hear what you say, but speaking will never teach what actions will convey so be sure to walk the talk. Move forward in knowing only what we do for Christ will last; let go of the things that limit and/or subject us to lives of pessimism. You deserve more, but what will you do to get it? We have a choice: we can choose to be wounded and stagnant or opt to be warriors in Him and rise above our occurrences in life. It’s how we handle them that makes the difference in how we can truly put our best face forward.

Three Serious Medical Conditions Associated with Hearing Loss

T

By d-mars.com News Provider

hink you might have hearing loss? It turns out procrastinating about that hearing test appointment may put more than just your hearing at risk. Primary care doctors now know hearing loss may be a symptom of another, more serious medical condition. Over the past decade, studies have linked hearing loss to three concerning co-morbidities:

heart attacks. Because of this, you should immediately report it to your primary care doctor if you have a hearing test that indicates hearing loss – especially in the low. He or she may recommend a complete cardiovascular work-up.

Early diagnosis and medical intervention can help slow the progression of dementia in some patients. Treatment with hearing aids not only helps improve your hearing – it might stave off or even slow down the development of dementia.

percent of cases in the U.S. Another significant study tested 5,000 plus individuals and found more than 30 percent of those diagnosed with diabetes also experienced hearing loss, according to the NIDCD.

Dementia Dementia

Cardiovascular disease Cardiovascular disease Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Poor cardiovascular health causes inadequate blood f low throughout the body. “One of the first signs of a problem is blood vessel trauma to your inner ear resulting in damage to fragile hearing nerves,” says Dr. Patricia Ramirez, an audiologist and trainer at Siemens Hearing Instruments, Inc. “The outcome is hearing loss, particularly in the lower frequencies.” A recent study showed a “significant association” between low-frequency hearing loss and the dangerous effects of cardiovascular disease, including strokes, coronary artery disease and

Despite the results of multiple studies linking hearing loss to the onset of dementia, many people are unaware that untreated hearing loss poses a threat to cognitive health. But studies have shown the more profound the hearing loss, the greater the possibility of cognitive decline. Why is hearing loss a likely factor in the development of dementia in some patients? Theories include: •  The same, as-yet-to-be discovered cause of dementia may also cause or contribute to hearing loss •  Straining to hear and understand exhausts your mind and inhibits its ability to function at peak performance •  People who cannot hear well or have difficulty hearing in crowds, often avoid socializing. Isolation is an established contributor to mental decline. Additional studies have associated hearing loss with more rapid brain shrinkage, particularly affecting areas of the brain responsible for processing speech, sound, memory and sensory integration.

Diabetes

Diabetes

No one wants to be told “you have hearing loss,” but ignoring an obvious problem will not make it go away. In fact, delaying treatment could make the problem worse and potentially endanger your overall health. Finding out you have hearing loss allows a hearing care professional to fit you with appropriate hearing aid amplification to help improve your hearing and provide you with test results that could alert your primary physician if you have serious health concerns. (BPT)

People with diabetes are two times more likely to suffer hearing loss than those without the condition. Diabetes actually encompasses a group of diseases associated with high blood glucose levels caused by an inability to produce or use insulin properly. Nearly 26 million Americans have a form of diabetes. Research measuring the ability to hear at the low, mid and high-frequencies in both ears, found a link between diabetes and hearing loss at all frequencies, with a somewhat stronger association in the highfrequency range, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. It appears the damage is more common in patients with Type 2 diabetes, which represents approximately 95

Put Your Best Face Forward By Rhonda Dallas Contributing Writer

We all have a unique face. No two are alike. The way we smile, the way we frown; it’s the only face like it. By putting our best face forward, we are bringing the very best we have to ourselves, to our loved ones, to our friends, to our employers and to the world. What you see is what you get and it will come across in our facial expressions as well as our demeanor. In order to strive to live or maintain a “healthy lifestyle,” we must continue to put our best effort into everything we do. How we view our surroundings has a great deal to do with how we strive to give the world our best face forward. In the U.S. alone, we spend billions of dollars in creams, lotions and anti-aging serums to give our face the appearance of being young, fresh and vibrant. But what happens inside when all the makeup has been rinsed away? This is the true you, ‘who you really are when no one is looking character.’ We should practice

being positive – it definitely cuts down on stress, which can lead to heart disease and other health-related diseases. When you get up tomorrow morn-

ing, strive to put your best face forward. Leave yesterday where it belongs, think positive, don’t overload your schedule and smile. If you practice this at least

two to three times per week, it will quickly become a habit and there is such thing as a good habit.
