E-PIC

Training Center Sees Great Success through Training Classes By Valerie Jones Associate Editor

L

ike most great businesses, E-PIC Training Center began as a vision. Tiffany Massie-Davis, who has 20 years of experience in the health care industry, wanted to fill a void in an area of health care that she felt was lacking – awareness and prevention as it related to infection control. Massie-Davis, whom is involved in numerous national infection prevention organizations, identified a need for more hands-on and local encounters. After sitting in costly class after class with facilitators who were unprepared and/or poorly trained, Massie-Davis made the decision to positively impact the health care industry…and from that, E-PIC Training Center was born. E-PIC, an acronym for Educating, Preparing, Informing and Consulting, is a training center servicing licensed and non-licensed professionals for groups large or small. E-PIC provides courses in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric

Advanced Life Support (PALS), Basic Life Support (BLS), First Aid/CPR/ AED, Phlebotomy Refresher, Infection Control and Staff Development Training. Each class is hands-on…participants are not just lectured. So far, feedback has been positive. “The response has been amazing for the training classes,” said MassieDavis, CEO of E-PIC Training Cent-

er. “It is funny how the company has manifested itself. E-PIC is a major movement and breath of fresh air in the health care industry. It is an arena in which health care providers and owners have someone partner with them to train and refresh their staff. Each class is tailored for the specific needs of the facility.” All of E-PIC’s clients complete private evaluations after a training class,

and each evaluation is taken seriously. There is always room for growth. “We are a company that really wants to see results,” said Massie-Davis. “Being a better and more competent company really lights our fire!” E-PIC aims to service any company in any area in which the company is not in great standings. “We have had nurses and medical assistants tell us, ‘I have not drawn blood in 20-30 years, so for you to give me confidence through the training is priceless,’” said MassieDavis. “We have trained and licensed instructors who are excited to get health care professionals to a level of confidence and assurance.” Massie-Davis is constantly asked what made her want to start E-PIC Training Center. Her answer is simple, yet genuine: she wants to see people be the very best they can be. “I am passionate about education and helping people,” she said. “There are a lot of great health care providers who have not received the proper training to make them excellent. I am confident in my skills and coupled with my heart to serve truly motivates me and offers me excitement to give

the community of health care providers what is missing in their facility.” She noted the amount of planning and research it takes to be successful in the health care industry. “Many facilities don’t have the time and revenue to pay a fulltime person for this service,” Massie-Davis said. “So we do the research, create the time and offer them success.” So far, it seems to be working. EPIC has a highly trained and experienced staff who is affiliated with national organizations in the health care industry. So as policies change, E-PIC is always abreast of the changes. As partners and co-laborers, EPIC takes responsibility for making sure clients obtain success and excellent training.

“For those companies that are not in compliance, or don’t have the resources, time or manpower to fix the problems, E-PIC can help,” she said. “You can trust our company to relieve the pressure.” As Massie-Davis puts it, E-PIC Training Center is an opportunity for small and large businesses to obtain quality training and services without doing the work. There are future plans for E-PIC Training Center to partner with schools, churches, outpatient surgery centers and clinics to assure every person has an opportunity to be equipped, informed, prepared and consulted. “No one will be left behind…we are impacting the health care industry!”

How Crooked Teeth and a Misaligned Bite Can Affect Your Overall Health What What Treatments Treatments Fix Fix Crooked Teeth and Crooked Teeth and Misaligned Bites? Misaligned Bites?

By Dr. Ka-Ron Y. Wade Contributing Writer

What Problems Come What Problems Come With CrookedTeeth Teeth With Crooked and MisalignedBites? Bites? and Misaligned Crooked teeth and misaligned bites can: •  Interfere with proper chewing •  Make keeping teeth clean more of a challenge, increasing the risk of tooth decay and cavities and gingivitis •  Strain the teeth, jaws and muscles, increasing the risk of breaking a tooth •  Make people feel self-conscious about their appearance and affect their self-esteem

How Do I Know if My How Do I Know if My Teeth Teeth Are Are Crooked Crooked or or My Bite Is Misaligned? My Bite Is Misaligned? Your dentist can determine if your teeth are crooked and bite misaligned through a routine examination of your mouth, teeth, jaw and facial appearance. Your dentist will look for the following signs: •  Abnormal alignment of your teeth •  Abnormal appearance of your face •  Difficulty or discomfort when chewing or biting •  Speech difficulties, including a lisp Your dentist will usually refer you to an orthodontist – a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of crooked teeth and misaligned jaws.

What Tests Can I ExWhat Tests I Expect at theCan Dentist? pect at the Dentist? The orthodontist will likely take X-rays, photographs of your face and teeth impressions to determine if and what type of treatment is needed. Xrays provide information on the position of your teeth and roots and if any teeth have yet to come through the gums. Special cephalometrics or panoramic X-rays show the relationship of the teeth to the jaws and the jaws to the head. Your orthodontist may also want to take regular photographs of your face to further examine the relationship between your teeth, jaws and head. Finally, impressions may be made of your teeth. This is done by having you bite down on a material that is later used to create an exact copy of your teeth.

Once a diagnosis is made, your orthodontist can decide the best treatment for you. For some people, a removable retainer (to stabilize the new position of teeth) will be all that’s needed to correct the problem. Removal of one or more teeth may be required if overcrowding is the main problem. For most people, braces are necessary to correct the problem. In rare and extreme cases, such as an extreme overbite or underbite, an operation is necessary.

MisalignedTeeth Teeth Misaligned Cause aaWide WideRange Range Cause of Health HealthProblems… Problems… What What do doyou youThink? Think? We don’t think too much about our teeth until we have a toothache or some other painful issue going on in our mouth. If you are experiencing pain or health problems in other areas of your body, which can range from insomnia to dizziness to headaches, thinking a little more about your teeth, especially if you have misaligned teeth, can bring about the discovery, root cause and cure for your health problems. Misaligned teeth (i.e. crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, broken or missing teeth, improperly fitting bridges, etc.) can cause a wide range of health problems including insomnia, dizziness, headaches, ear aches, facial pain, neck pain, jaw clicking and pain when chewing. Misaligned teeth can cause problems with posture, which will lead to even more health issues like joint pain and low back pain. How is it possible that misaligned teeth, or even just one misaligned tooth, can bring about such a wide range of health problems and pain? Any misalignment in your teeth will cause your jaw joint to misaligned. The jaw joint is the highest joint in our skeletal system. A misaligned jaw joint will produce a ‘trickle down’ effect and impact the other joints below it in our bodies. Misaligned teeth do not fit together properly when chewing. The surrounding muscles and joints have to work harder to compensate for the misaligned teeth so they will work to chew your food. When facial and jaw muscles are tensed at unusual angles for chewing, this places stress on the jaw joint, which continues the muscle tensing and joint stress cycle down throughout other parts of our bodies. The health problems and pain caused from misaligned teeth may

stay localized, as in the cases of temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), which presents with mild to severe jaw joint pain, jaw clicking and restricts the mouth from opening up fully. Worn down teeth and problems with prior cosmetic dentistry work such as bridges or crowns can also be caused from misaligned teeth. Insomnia and clenching or grinding worn down teeth and problems with prior cosmetic dentistry work such as bridges or crowns can also be caused from misaligned teeth. Insomnia and clenching or grinding teeth during sleep can also be caused from misaligned teeth. The unnatural tensing of jaw muscles to compensate for misaligned teeth leads to other body muscles tensing when they should be in a relaxed state while sleeping, which will deprive you of a good night’s sleep. Ear aches and/or dizziness can be due to the jaw joint being out of its natural alignment because the jaw has had to compensate for misaligned teeth. Headaches, facial pain and neck pain are often caused by overworked jaw muscles. The stress on this mus-

cle group can lead to posture problems when we try to find a position in which to hold our heads to alleviate the pain. The misalignment that started with the teeth can trickle down into the lower back muscles, hip and leg joints. The connection between misaligned teeth and various other health problems and body pain is recognized in the health care industry. Specialized treatment by a newly established and growing field of dentistry called Neuromuscular dentistry offers hope and help to those who may have been suffering previously undiagnosed health problems due to misaligned teeth. Neuromuscular dentistry offers pain relief without surgery or invasive procedures if the pain or health problems you are experiencing stem from misaligned teeth. Forget the Pricey Trip to the Spa with Simple DIY Tips and Tricks

W

By d-mars.com News Provider

Gentle exfoliant:

ith a new year in full swing, now is the perfect time to relax and refresh with at-home spa treatments that are easy, natural, luxurious and, best of all, affordable. “Skin care does not have to be costly to be effective,” says Janet Little, director of nutrition at Sprouts Farmers Market. “By preparing your own body care products, you can have beautiful-looking skin, slow down premature skin aging and save money.” As a matter of fact, you probably already have fresh and natural ingredients in your refrigerator and cupboards, or you can easily purchase them from a grocery store like Sprouts Farmers Market, says Little. These simple ingredients can eliminate dry skin, reduce wrinkles, banish dark under eye circles and relax sore muscles. The advantages of homemade skin care products include:

Brown sugar is a natural and affordable exfoliant with many health benefits, while grapeseed oil gently and deeply moisturizes skin without clogging pores. Ingredients: 1/2 cup grapeseed oil 1/2 cup brown sugar Mix together with your fingers. Apply to face and body by rotating in a circular motion. Rinse off with warm water.

Firming facial mask: Egg white is great for tightening and toning skin and helps to shrink pores. Yogurt is packed with vitamins and proteins, which promotes strong wrinkle-f ree skin. Ingredients: 1/2 tablespoon vitamin E oil 1 tablespoon yogurt 1 egg white Whisk together. Massage onto face and neck. Leave on for at least 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Avocado-honey facial mask:

•  Significant savings. Most of the products that you’ll use are already in your home and are less expensive than department store-bought skin care products or spa treatments. •  Avoiding harsh chemicals. Artificial ingredients found in typical drug store beauty products may contain cancer-causing compounds which can penetrate the skin and potentially cause harmful effects. •  Always natural and fresh. Skin care products purchased in a store contain preservatives to avoid bacteria contamination and growth. On the other hand, when you prepare your skin care items yourself you get a fresh and natural batch every time. •  Easy and fun to make. Simple recipes take minutes to prepare but can be just as effective as store-bought products. Here are a few easy, at-home spa recipes that will leave you glowing:

Avocados are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, perfect for hydrating and great for moisturizing skin. Honey acts as a natural humectant, boosting skin’s hydration and is also a wonderful skin lightening agent. Ingredients: 1/2 avocado 1/2 cup Sprouts orange blossom honey First, place a cloth in warm water and apply to your face to open the pores. Mash avocado until creamy, combine with honey and apply to face for 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, then use cold water to close the pores. Use once a week.

Wrinkle reducer: Banana is wonderf ul as an antiwrinkle treatment. Ingredients: 1 over-ripe banana Mash 1/4 banana until very creamy. Spread all over face and leave for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off with warm water followed by a dash of cold. Gently pat dry.

Under-eye circle treatment: Grated potatoes can lighten under-eye circles. Potatoes contain an enzyme called catecholase, which is used in cosmetics as a skin lightener. Ingredients: 1 potato Cheese cloth Run one spud through your food processor and stuff the raw mash into a piece of cheesecloth. Apply to the area directly beneath your eye – don’t let the potato juice come in contact with the eye itself – and leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Wipe away the starchy residue.

Tired and aching muscle relaxer: Epsom salts and essential oils are known for their powerful ability to sooth sore muscles and relieve aches and muscle pain. Ingredients: 1/2 cup Epsom Salt 5 drops lavender essential oil 2 drops chamomile essential oil Place Epsom salts in a mixing bowl and add drops of essential oil. Mix ingredients together and add to a hot bath. When using natural ingredients, there are endless possibilities. If you don’t have the time to create your own in-home beauty products, Sprouts offers an assortment of high-quality body care products made with sustainable and ethically sourced ingredients at great values. – BPT

3 Ways to Enjoy Pizza without all the Calories! Photos and Recipes Courtesy of CookingLight.com Pepperoni Deep-Dish Pizza Here’s your knife, fork, and two napkins kind of deep-dish pie, invented at Pizzeria Uno in Chicago more than 60 years ago.

Ratatouille Pizza Fall in love with the hybrid of two European classics— French ratatouille and Italian pizza. Ingredients 12 ounces refrigerated fresh pizza dough 1 red bell pepper 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 cups (1/2-inch) cubed eggplant 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 6 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 cup thinly sliced zucchini rounds 1 cup thinly sliced yellow squash rounds 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano 1/2 cup lower-sodium marinara sauce 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon cornmeal 3 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, torn into small pieces 3/4 cup very thinly sliced red onion rings 1/2 ounce Parmesan cheese, grated (about 1/4 cup) 1/3 cup torn fresh basil leaves 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper

Instructions 1. Remove dough from refrigerator. Let stand at room temperature, covered, for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat broiler to high. 3. Cut bell pepper in half lengthwise; discard seeds and membranes. Place pepper halves, skin sides up, on a foil-lined baking sheet; flatten with hand. Broil 12 minutes or until blackened. Wrap pepper in foil; close tightly. Let stand 10 minutes. Peel and cut into 1/4-inch-thick strips. 4. Place a pizza stone or heavy baking sheet in oven. Heat oven to 500° (keep stone or sheet in oven as it preheats). 5. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon oil; swirl to coat. Add eggplant; sauté 3 minutes. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and garlic; sauté 2 minutes. Remove eggplant mixture from pan; set aside. Add zucchini, squash, and oregano to pan; sauté 3 minutes. Remove zucchini mixture from pan; set aside. 6. Combine marinara and vinegar. 7. Roll dough into a 14-inch circle. Pierce liberally with a fork. Remove stone from oven. Sprinkle cornmeal on stone. Place dough on stone; bake at 500° for 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Spread marinara mixture over dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border; top with half of mozzarella. Arrange zucchini mixture over cheese. Top with remaining mozzarella, eggplant mixture, peppers, and onion rings. Sprinkle with Parmesan. Bake 10 minutes or until crust is done. Top with basil and crushed red pepper. Cut into 8 wedges.

Ingredients 1 cup warm water (100° to 110°), divided 12 ounces bread flour (about 2 1/2 cups) 1 package dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons) 4 teaspoons olive oil 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt Cooking spray 1 1/4 cups (5 ounces) shredded part-skim moz-

Instructions 1. Pour 3/4 cup warm water in the bowl of a stand mixer with dough hook attached. Weigh or lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Preheat oven to 450°. 4. Arrange 3/4 cup mozzarella evenly over dough; top with Basic Pizza Sauce, pepperoni, Parmigiano-Reggiano and remaining 1/2 cup mozzarella. Place pan on baking sheet in oven; bake at 450° for 25 minutes or until crust is golden. Cut pizza into 6 rectangles.
