Houston This Is It Soul Food 2020 FAMILY AFFAIR
H
ouston This Is It Soul Food began its legacy in 1959 and is still flourishing and standing strong as the fourth generation works diligently to accept ownership. Craig Joseph inherited the family restaurant from his grandparents with the understanding that the road to success is not easy or straight, but as long as he has determination, perseverance, faith and Jesus, he will be successful. Frank Jones, the founder of This Is It, inspired Craig and made sure that he followed these principles: always maintain public acceptance; don’t forget your roots; always protect your wealth and share it with family and friends. As Joseph grooms the fourth generation to assume ownership, he has not only instilled Jones' principles, but has added one of his own. When Jones, or “Tap” as many called
56
PE_2020.indd 56
him, was nearing his homegoing, he spoke with each one of the vendors and asked them to promise him that they would take care of his boy, Craig. To this day, they are all still standing by that promise, and Joseph has no shame in saying that he would not be where he is today without those relationships. As he is teaching the ins and outs of owning a restaurant business to Christopher, one of his sons, Jessica, his daughter and Thaddeus, his son-in-law, he preaches to them every day that they will only have continuous success if they nourish and respect their relationships with one another and anyone who has genuinely worked with them or him for the overall success of This Is It. Believe it or not, within just the last three years, Christopher, Jessica and Thaddeus have each seen the beauty and the beast behind maintaining and ending
relationships. They are gaining a greater respect for their father’s words of advice day-by-day. Joseph does not tell them “I told you so,” but he simply sits in his spot, gives them the look with a nod, and they know a lesson is to be learned at that moment. While respecting the integrity of the food, they do intend to expand the business. Since renovations are complete, their focus this year is to utilize their large private rooms for business meetings, community gatherings and caterings. With 61 years of business lifting them up, the fourth generation is confident that they will continue the family legacy for many more years to come. A proud Houstonian, she attended school in the Houston Independent School District and later became a teacher in the same district. While teaching, she earned her master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Cultural Studies. Campbell-Rhone continued her educational track and successfully became a school improvement facilitator and an assistant principal at Stevenson Middle School. During her tenure at Stevenson Middle School, she began working on her doctorate and simultaneously became the mother of two boys, two years apart. After her time at Stevenson, she was asked to be the Dean of Instruction at Sam Houston High School, one of the first high schools to be reconstituted by the Texas Education Agency for low performance. Within one academic school year, Worthing returned to a passing grade status after ten years of failing to meet state accountability requirements. For the month of April 2018, Campbell-Rhone received the Educational Leadership Award for Houston ISD and was named the 2018-2019 Principal of the Year. Her students have travelled the United States visiting various colleges (more than 78) through grants and donations, met the Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, trained with NAO Global, Inc. in San Francisco, California on NAO and Pepper, autonomous programmable humanoid robots, met the 19 newly elected Black female judges who made history being elected in the Houston area, appeared on the Good Morning America show to promote Colt University and received the highly coveted distinction of an Early College Institute bequeathed by the State of Texas. She also began the yearly Southside Take Over Parade that has become synonymous with the start to the school year in the Sunny Side area of Houston.
Campbell-Rhone then became the principal of the Ninth Grade College Preparatory Academy where, in one academic year, their academic status rose from academically acceptable to 'recognized' status. Several years later, she became the principal of Thomas Middle School. Under her leadership, both campuses experienced tremendous gains in academic performance as well as immense improvement in their campus culture and climate. After 13 years in the dual capacity as an insurance professional and entertainment marketing maven, Wright recalibrated his focus and partnered with Steve Rogers in 2011 to form their first club ownership endeavor Sugar Hill Lounge. Sugar Hill Lounge was a Third Ward staple for many of Houston’s urban elite and an endured a phenomenal seven-year run. sprawling televisions, large patios, lounge seating throughout, handcrafted cocktails and diverse food menus. Prospect Park is a hub for all the big sporting events as well as live entertainment, celebrity meet and greets and more. iotti “Radio Boss” Brown is a product of his environment. It’s not an easy task being one of Houston’s top radio personalities. This Houston native is the definition of hard work and dedication. Since 2003, Brown has been a well-known and respected rap artist in the city. After a bad break up with Warner Bros/ Asylum Records, Brown began his radio career. In 2008, a shorut stint at now defunct Party 93.3/ 04.9 (KPTY) peaked his love for radio. In 2010, he got drafted to the #1 station in the market, (KBXX) 97.9 The Box. One of his strongest assets is his connection to the Houston community. Countless hours of community service at high schools and junior high schools throughout the area has made him a local favorite. Also in late 2018, Brown started an anti-bullying initiative to help combat and prevent bullying in Houston area schools. Many of Houston’s premier athletes and entertainers have signed on to support his cause. Brown also finds time to mentor area youth and local artist. Growing up as a “PK” or preacher’s kid, giving back was always a priority even at a young age. Getting back to his roots as an artist, in 2018 Brown returned to the studio to record “H Town For Real.” Features from Z Ro, Paul Wall, Lil Flip, Riff Raff, Mista Mudd and more, made this record an instant regional success. The same year, Brown also tackled another personal passion: fashion. With strong support from the city, Love the City Brand has quickly grown to be a fashion staple in the community. At the beginning of 2020, Brown concluded his run as the longest running #1 night show in the city to pursue other radio endeavors. He is now the morning anchor of 97.9 The Box’s new morning show, Good Morning H Town.

Sam Mac Ford 2020 TOP P&E
am Mac Ford is a native Houstonian and a phenomenally proud product of Fifth Ward, Texas. He is a proud husband, father of four, local business owner, entrepreneur and most importantly a proud man of GOD. Ford attended University of Houston School of Business in 1989. He always knew he wanted to innovate an industry by using his business mind, but he struggled because he enjoyed watching others socially have a great time in a mature atmosphere. Therefore, his first love captivated him into becoming a local DJ and one of the first to provide video DJ-ing. Little did he know this would propel him to become one of the best disc jockeys in the city of Houston, earning him recognition and great respect from other DJ’s in Houston as well as Atlanta, Louisiana, Chicago and New York. After several local awards and 15 years of serving the music/entertainment community, he was no longer Samuel D. Ford of Sam Mac Entertainment, he was only known by “Sam Mac”. The Sam Mac Entertainment umbrella quickly grew and encompassed owning two successful clubs on the north side of Houston named Mac Bar and Mac City and promoting various events throughout the year. Ford mastered the art of promotions and entertainment through social media for decades. He created the Sam Mac Entertainment 30 and Up Group on Facebook, which has over 300k members combined and continues to bring events to Houston, Louisiana and Chicago with more cities to be added in the future as he caters to the daily entertainment and social empowerment of dynamic dialogue through social media connections. Ford has spent his entire career in service to others by not only donating financial resources but also donating his time to others in the community. As an entrepreneur, founder of Sam Mac Entertainment, owner of Champions Home Care, founder of the Group 30 and Up Entertainment, advocate for Elders in need and one of the 100 members of the distinguished EL Dorado Social
Club of Houston, his leadership and ability to have thousands follow him in his charitable work in the community has allowed him to be able to give back in an astounding way. Some of his recognizable and notable work in the community includes his dedication and volunteerism with elders in need, clothing for Hurricane Harvey Victims, Houston Food Bank, Breast Cancer Awareness and Rise Against Hunger Houston. In July 2018, he added author to his resume with the book “Men Are Simple.” His goal in writing this book was to make a positive impact on others’ lives through his writing and to make purposeful, valuable social connections amongst each other in which to build healthy and caring relationships. It is with that dedication to serve and be a blessing to others, not only through his time and financial resources, but through his literacy and
commitment to humanity. Ford was also honored by the Mayor of Houston with the prestigious Proclamation Award, making July 21, 2018 “SAM MAC DAY” in the City of Houston and recognizing him as one of the leaders in the community for his contributions to the community and city. His goal in life is to ensure that he makes a positive impact on people’s lives through bringing people together in hopes of creating an upscale platform, creating purposeful and valuable social connections amongst each other and giving back to those that are less fortunate through donations and community service. caused Big 6 Bar B Que so much damage that operations were shut down for almost a year. However, through prayer, hard work, perseverance and the support of customers and friends, Big 6 Bar B Que was able to recover and rebuild. Big 6 Bar B Que remains a family owned and operated barbecue company experiencing amazing growth. There are mobile trailers that service Sugar Land and the Greater Houston area with catering, onsite concession and much more. The primary location is a deluxe custom built trailer located in Sugar Land, Texas. Big 6 Bar B Que has partnered with Aramark to provide concessions at both NRG Stadium and NRG Arena. Other agreements with Houston Community College System have proven to be successful too. Two of Stewart’s most prideful accomplishments are being a member of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and being a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), allowing him to continue to service the community.

Hard work, dedication and integrity fueled his determination to succeed. After high school, Stewart joined the United States Army and served in Bosnia. While serving the country, he also worked the grill preparing meals to serve fellow soldiers. This is where he began to develop a passion for barbecuing. When Stewart returned home in 1998, he began barbecuing every weekend for friends and family. The weekly barbecuing lasted another three years and the diners grew from 20 to 300 people. More importantly, this hobby inspired the creation of the Big 6 Bar B Que business. Big 6 Bar B Que transitioned to regular catering jobs, picnics, family reunions and much more. This success allowed Stewart to step out on faith, leave his full-

time construction industry job and open a Bar B Que food trailer. In 2009, Big 6 Bar B Que was established. The Big 6 Bar B Que success was immediate especially after winning local Big 6 Bar B Que competitions and being recognized as the #1 barbecue in Houston by a KHOU-TV competition. With the Big 6 Bar B Que expansion, Stewart leveraged an opportunity to open a brick and mortar barbecue restaurant on the north side of Houston. At this site, he was able to expand the menu but also realized a greater need for a location in Sugar Land, Texas. Due to logistics, he decided to close the northside location and opened a food trailer in Sugarland. He was able to reduce his overhead and invest in a second trailer. The move proved successful, and Big 6 Bar B Que was again providing meals and acquiring new customers and success until Hurricane Harvey. Hurricane Harvey
Big 6 Bar B Que has been established as the best barbecue in the greater Houston area and was featured on Fox 26. One of Big 6 Bar B Que’s concession trailer can be found at the front entrance of the NRG Stadium at almost every Houston Texans home game. Big 6 Bar B Que is also the official BBQ caterer for the 2018 Champion Minor League Baseball Team, Sugar Land Skeeters, and Houston Community College. Opportunities seemed to be scarce, but she devised a technique to find information on casting calls, fashion shows, commercials and movies. Lebrina Johnson 2020 UP & COMING
ebrina Johnson was born in Houston, Texas to Theresa Pruitt and Leonard Johnson on May 13, 1989. Growing up, Johnson was always considered congenial for her outgoing personality. After high school, Johnson relocated to College Station to study biology at Texas A&M University and had the goal of becoming a dentist. Soon after starting college, she learned she was expecting a child and made a tough decision to drop out of college due the challenges she faced with being pregnant and having a demanding college coursework schedule. This unexpected turn of events landed her at her mother’s salon, styling hair, continuing a legacy of five generations of stylists. Instead of looking at her circumstances and feeling defeated, Johnson took this opportunity and turned water into wine by leveraging her current circumstances to discover there was a plethora of money to be made in the beauty industry. Her current career path led her into the virgin hair market where she started her own line of virgin hair extensions in a time when the demand for virgin hair was on the rise. This opportunity fueled Johnson’s entrepreneurial spirit and is how she developed Pure Strandz virgin hair extensions and styling brand. The next eight years, she continued her career as a hair stylist selling hair to her clients where there was a need. However, the thirst for entrepreneurship and her dream of owning a salon and spa would finally become a reality. Johnson’s deep desire pushed her to walk out on faith and away from the comfort she knew. She took a pay cut and faced infuriated clients to begin the road to her perfect vision. In 2017, Pure Vichy Salon & Spa opened in the upscale River Oaks area of Houston. A now 30-year old, Johnson is the owner of a first-class successful spa and is scouting for
property to expand her brand as far as her vision will take her, spreading pure and perfect beauty around the country and possibly the world.
