"Have an open mind as there is a vast range of jobs available. Think about what you will enjoy doing first – there is a good chance you can pursue that with a career in construction," says built environment journalist and associate editor at Construction News, Damon Schünmann.

The property market is also active at the moment, so job prospects are good.

"My clients tell me skilled trades in particular are scarce so demand for jobs is high," says Nigel Millington, director of Phil Jones Associates.

"It's usually a long process to get planning to enable the construction of the development, so patience and an ability to work with or manage a team is critical."

Port of Houston Authority and Freight Shuttle International Sign Cooperation Agreement

HOUSTON - The Port of Houston Authority (Port Authority) and Freight Shuttle International (FSI) recently announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding a Joint Project to Evaluate Freight Shuttle Deployment Options in the Port of Houston Area. The signing preceded a Demonstration and Media Briefing of the Autonomous Freight Shuttle System, held in Bryan, Texas, which was co-sponsored by Governor Greg Abbott, Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and FSI. “Throughout its 102 year history, the Port of Houston has pursued innovation and technological advances to meet demand and protect the environment.

The Freight Shuttle has the potential to reduce freight congestion, transportation costs, and air emissions and we support these goals,” said Janiece Longoria, Chairman of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority.

“Container volumes continue to grow,” added Executive Director Roger Guenther. “We’ve continually innovated our terminals to accommodate that demand through expanded capacity and increased cargo velocity. The potential that the Freight Shuttle provides to complement the existing road and rail

transportation system and contribute to economic growth and creation of jobs is truly exciting.”

FSI acknowledged the value of the partnership with the Port Authority for the success of this project. “Innovation requires challenging current ways of thinking,” said Gordon Dorsey, Vice President, FSI Commercial Development. “FSI has come up with a practical and elegant solution to freight transportation, but it also requires partnerships to come together to bring ideas into reality.”

arathon Machine Tools recently hosted its Open House at its technical sales, service and retrofit center in Humble, TX. "MMT has been servicing the Texas/Louisiana market for over 25 years by offering high quality machine tools, great service and retrofitting solutions of a range of CNC lathes/ machining centers such as Mori Seiki, Okuma and Mazak," said a company spokesperson.

Marathon Machine Tools represenst Danobat OCTG turning and grinding division, GROB multi-axis machining centers, VANTAGE Oil Country lathes, NCT machine tool division offering single source machine tools including CNC control package, and ONA EDM. Marathon formed a joint venture with Danobat Group in 2014. In the process, Danobat moved its U.S. headquarters to the MMT facility. Marathon is now directly servicing the Texas and Louisiana manufacturing community as an OEM company promoting the Danobat turning machines and grinding machines.

Marathon continues to offer its complete machine tool rebuilding program, including FANUC and NCT retrofit solutions for many different machine tool brands. The company also offers ball bar test and laser measuring services.

Representatives of Seco tooling, SMW Autoblok, Mastercam and Cogsdill specialty tooling displayed their latest technology. Ryan Ladle from Mastercam showed a live demonstration on one of the retrofitted machining centers with the NCT-201 control.

Representatives were also present from US Steel, TMK Ipsco, Republic Tube, Technip - FMC Technology and others. "The Danobat TTB premium pipe threading lathe mockup was the center of attention, as well as videos of our automated coupling cells," said the spokesperson. Jeff Heath from Autonetics presented Autonetics' automated pipe threading inspection robotic system.

By Subcontractors USA News Provider mployment of architects is projected to grow 7 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations.

Architects will be needed to make plans and designs for the construction and renovation of homes, offices, retail stores, and other structures. Many school districts and universities are expected to build new facilities or renovate existing ones. In addition, demand is expected for more healthcare facilities as the baby-boomer population ages and as more individuals use healthcare services. The construction of new retail establishments may also require more architects.

Demand is projected for architects with a knowledge of “green design,” also called sustainable design. Sustainable design emphasizes the efficient use of resources, such as energy and water conservation; waste and pollution reduction; and environmentally friendly design, specifications, and materials. Rising energy costs and increased concern about the environment have led to many new buildings being built with more sustainable designs.

The use of CADD and, more recently, BIM, has made architects more productive. These technologies have allowed architects to do

more work without the help of drafters while making it easier to share the work with engineers, contractors, and clients.

Job Prospects With a high number of students graduating with degrees in architecture, very strong competition for internships and jobs is expected. Competition for jobs will be especially strong at the most prestigious architectural firms. Those with up-to-date technical skills—including a strong grasp of CADD and BIM—and experience in

sustainable design will have an advantage.

Employment of architects is strongly tied to the activity of the construction industry. Therefore, these workers may experience periods of unemployment when there is a slowdown in requests for new projects or when the overall level of construction falls.

Zydeco Pipeline Paves The Way To St. James With New Agreement With Locap

In 2014, the United States switched from being a net importer of ethane to a net exporter after the opening of two new ethane pipelines that began transporting ethane from North Dakota and southwestern Pennsylvania to Canada. EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) expects annual average ethane net exports to increase from 60,000 b/d in 2015 to 230,000 b/d in 2017, as new export facilities and ethane-carrying ships enable ethane to reach overseas markets. On March 9, the United States shipped the first waterborne exports of ethane from the Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania terminal to Europe. A second ethane terminal is expected to open at Morgan's Point, Texas in the third quarter of 2016. The two terminals are expected to export ethane mainly to European and Asian countries.

ydeco Pipeline Company LLC (“Zydeco”) and LOCAP LLC (“LOCAP”) signed a memorandum of understanding to provide access to additional capacity to St. James for Zydeco shippers through Zydeco’s 24” pipeline into LOCAP’s main oil pipeline.

This proposed agreement with LOCAP will provide Zydeco’s shippers with much desired additional capacity directly into the St. James market at a cost of transportation identical to Zydeco’s existing Houma to St. James pipeline tariff. An additional 100kbd to 140kbd of capacity to St. James is expected to be made available to Zydeco’s shippers beginning in the 3rd Quarter of 2016.

“We’re very excited about this agreement with LOCAP and the incremental capacity to St. James that we will be able to provide to our shippers,” said Michele Joy, vice president of Zydeco. “We’ve been exploring debottleneck solutions from Houma to St. James for quite some time and are pleased to have secured an alternative path which will enable us to meet our customers’ needs.” Shawn Lyon, president of LOCAP, added, “Being able to provide this solution with existing assets, will provide immediate benefit to the marketplace, in addition to future growth opportunities.”

Zydeco’s 18” pipeline from Houma to St. James has been prorated since the reversal of the Ho Ho System in late 2013.

A joint tariff with LOCAP will be filed by Zydeco for movements of Poseidon crude oil from Houma to St. James. Moving Poseidon via LOCAP will create additional capacity for Zydeco’s shippers on the Houma to St. James 18” pipeline segment.

About Zydeco Pipeline Company LLC: Zydeco Pipeline Company is jointly owned by Shell Pipeline Company LP (SPLC) and Shell Midstream Partners, L.P. (NYSE: SHLX). Zydeco’s Houston to Houma oil pipeline system runs from Houston, Texas to market hubs in St. James and Clovelly, Louisiana. It provides US Gulf Coast refineries and terminals with pipeline access to additional sources of growing light crude oil production arriving in the Houston market from the Eagle Ford shale, Permian Basin and Bakken shale and to offshore production landing in Houma, Louisiana.

About LOCAP LLC: LOCAP is a common carrier pipeline system. LOCAP transports crude oil from Clovelly, Louisiana through a 54 mile, 48-inch pipeline to the LOCAP St. James Terminal facility and other destinations in St. James, Louisiana. Ethane Production Expected to Increase as Petrochemical Consumption and Exports Expand

By Subcontractors USA News Provider thane production is expected to increase from 1.1 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2015 to 1.4 million b/d in 2017, accounting for two-thirds of total U.S. hydrocarbon gas liquid (HGL) production growth. Ethane, a key feedstock for petrochemical manufacturing, is recovered from raw natural gas at natural gas processing plants.

Over the past five or six years, the amount of ethane contained in domestically produced raw natural gas has exceeded the capacity to consume and export it. This oversupply kept ethane prices relatively low, hovering at or below the price of natural gas, leading producers to reject the ethane stream by leaving it mixed with the stream that is marketed as pipeline natural gas, which is mostly methane.

Beginning in 2012, the availability of relatively inexpensive ethane encouraged a wave of investments in ethane-consuming petrochemical plants and export facilities. The recognition that these investments would provide an outlet for U.S. ethane also encouraged investment in facilities to recover ethane from raw natural gas and to transport it to market. Many of these projects, including de-ethanization facilities, ethane pipelines, petrochemical plants, and ethane export facilities, have either recently been completed or are currently under construction and will come online in the next few years. These projects increase take-away capacity for ethane, especially in the Marcellus and Utica shale regions, mainly in

Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, where market outlets for rapidly growing natural gas supply were previously limited to pipeline natural gas.

As new ethane-consuming petrochemical and export capacity reduces the ethane oversupply in 2016 and 2017, ethane prices are expected to generally remain above natural gas prices, leading to a rise in ethane recovery to meet demand and export growth. EIA's recent report on the Short-Term Outlook for Hydrocarbon Gas Liquids examines

ethane production, consumption, exports, and infrastructure projects.

U.S. ethane consumption, which was 1.05 million b/d in 2015, is forecast to increase 50,000 b/d in 2016 as expansion projects at ethylene-producing petrochemical plants increase feedstock demand for ethane. In 2017, ethane consumption is projected to increase another 80,000 b/d as capacity begins to ramp up at five new petrochemical plants and at a previously deactivated plant.

he U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced three Texas cities made the eighthannual "Top Cities" list, which ranks the 25 U.S. metropolitan areas with the most Energy Star certified buildings and superior energy performance in the preceding calendar year. Dallas-Fort Worth came in at number seven with 249 buildings, Houston at number eight with 231 buildings and Austin tied for 25th with 55 buildings.

The Top Cities list serves to illustrate how cities across America are embracing energy efficiency as a proven path to financial savings and a healthier environment.

"Every year, more cities are turning to energy efficiency not only to protect the environment, but also to strengthen their local economies," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. "The cities on this list are demonstrating that energy efficiency is a cost-effective way to improve public health in their communities and build a brighter future for their youngest residents."

"Three of the largest, most vibrant cities in Texas have benefitted from making energy efficiency a priority," said Regional Administrator Ron Curry. "Congratulations to Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin for your success in saving

energy, fighting climate change and improving our environment."

Commercial buildings contribute roughly 16 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and cost American organizations and cities more than $100 billion per year in energy bills. Since 1999, more than 27,000 buildings across America have earned EPA's Energy Star certification, which signifies proven superior energy performance. On average, these certified buildings use 35 percent less energy and are responsible for 35 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions than typical

buildings. These buildings have saved more than $3.8 billion on utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to the emissions from the annual electricity use of more than 2.6 million homes.

To be eligible for Energy Star certification, a building must be independently verified to perform better than at least 75 percent of similar buildings nationwide.

Office buildings, schools, retail stores, supermarkets, hotels, and many other common building types are eligible to earn the Energy Star.

In addition to certifying top-perform-

ing buildings, Energy Star offers valuable tools and resources to help building owners and managers measure and improve energy performance in virtually any type of building. he Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) is one of the most powerful agencies in the city, providing transportation to Houstonians. Though this agency is mostly associated with transportation, there are countless departments within METRO that are helping to provide great change beyond the transportation arena, and one of those departments is the Office of Small Business. METRO’s Office of Small Business is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the Small/Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (SBE/DBE) Programs through Small Business certification, business development outreach, and contract compliance monitoring. One of METRO’s business development outreach efforts is a partnership with well-respected companies and agencies to help our small business community gain opportunities and to help them grow. There is no denying that small businesses have made and continue to make great contributions to our economy, and METRO understands and recognizes that as a powerful leader.

Interagency Mentor Protégé Program (IMPP) METRO, the City of Houston, the Houston Independent School District (H.I.S.D.), and the Port of Houston Authority understand that the small business community is vital to Houston’s economy. For the past three years, these four organizations have partnered for the Interagency Mentor Protégé Program (IMPP). The fourth year of the IMPP kicked off May 10, 2016. The IMPP was an 8 week workshop (ending June 30, 2016) that connected small businesses (protégés) with established businesses and agencies (mentors).

Five Must Know Secret Tips to Avoid Delays in City Building Permitting

rustrations and complaints continue to be the order of the day for the City of Houston Permitting Center. And while the majority of architects, engineers, developers and contractors know that any kind of delay in submitting and having plans reviewed at City Permitting costs time, money and can impact the start date for construction, they may not realize that some of the simplest reasons can be the cause for delay. From our experience of expediting permits on many types of projects, below are the top five reasons for delays cited by City Permitting Plan Reviewers.

Top Five Reasons and Tips to Avoid Delays in City Permitting: No signature on submitted plan set – Designing architects and engineers are

busy and may be working on multiple projects and while it is a simple mistake, many times the professional forgets to sign the drawings. In turn, City Permitting does not accept plan set until signed. Tip: Sign drawings.

No professional stamp or seal not decipherable i.e. smeared – While the drawings may be signed, another reason for possible delay is when the professional’s seal or stamp on drawings is smeared, distorted and not readable.

This is an avoidable mistake that can create a delay during submission or in the review process. Tip: Review plan set to confirm quality seal in place.

Failure to respond to rejections – When areas on the drawings are incorrect or not understood or is a gray area

in complying with building codes then the Plan Reviewer will create a rejection notice. Each rejection is to be responded to and corrected where needed and not doing so can cause an immediate and sometimes substantially long delays. Tip: Respond to all rejections.

Not considering building permit during design phase - Last minute thinking about needing a building permit often causes errors on drawings and can result in key items on the City Permitting checklist to be missed. This scenario can create a very stressful experience for all parties involved including City Plan Reviewers, plus cause significant delays to submit and in reviewing plan set.

Tip: Plan ahead.

Taking a long time to respond to re-

jections from City Permitting – Often times once the plans are submitted into building permitting, the architect or engineer may have shifted to working on new projects. This can create an overburdened scenario resulting in the architect or engineer taking an inordinate amount of time to respond to City Permitting rejections and then resubmit plan set with corrections. Tip: Schedule to make corrections in a timely manner.

Private nonresidential spending in Texas totaled $30.1 billion in 2014. (Public spending is not available by state.)

Nonresidential starts in Texas totaled $27.4 billion in 2014 and $26.9 billion in 2013, according to CMD.

Construction Employment (Seasonally Adjusted):





Construction (residential + nonresidential) employed 6.4 million workers in August 2015, an increase of 219,000 (3.6%) from August 2014 and a decrease of 1.3 million (17%) from April 2006, when U.S. construction employment peaked.

Construction employment in Texas in August 2015 totaled 666,600, an increase of 1.7% from August 2014 and a 2% decrease from the state’s peak in April 2008.

Construction Industry Pay:





In 2014, annual pay of all construction workers in the United States averaged $55,000, 7% more than the average for all private sector employees.

Construction workers’ pay in Texas averaged $58,600, 8% more than all private sector employees in the state.

Small Business:  The United States had 658,500 construction firms in 2013, of which 92% employed fewer than 20 workers.  Texas had 39,400 construction firms in 2013, of which 87% were small (<20 employees). *The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports employment for construction, mining and logging combined for metro areas in which mining and logging have few employers. To allow comparisons between states and their metros, the table shows combined employment change for these metros. Not seasonally adjusted statewide data is shown for both construction-only and combined employment change.
