LIVING LEGEND 2013

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Texas-based Rap-A-Lot Records, James Prince has built his recording company into a multi-million dollar music industry force in a little over ten years. What began as incentive to keep a group of teenagers from Houston’s notorious Fifth Ward in school, has emerged as one of the music industry’s most respected independent record labels. During the 1990’s Rap-A-lot Records was honored on several occasions as the Independent Rhythm & Blues or Rap Label of the Year by Billboard magazine. The label has produced a bevy of hit albums and singles garnering 18 Gold and Platinum records from groups that include Geto Boys, Scarface, and Do or Die. J. Prince’s pioneering spirit is the driving force behind Rap-A-Lot’s success. “It started (in 1986) when I worked at a bank,” explains Prince in reference to how he concocted the notion to establish the first noteworthy record label in Houston, Texas. “I would come home from work to have lunch and these two boys would always be playing hooky from school and were always rapping.” Prince made an agreement with them. “I promised them if they went to school, I would help them to get started in music.” He adds, “I was just trying to get them to continue going to school! As time went on I found myself getting more involved with their lives.” At that time, J. Prince was exploring several business ventures. As he developed a plan to keep his promise to the two youngsters who would one day deliver platinum and gold albums and call themselves Geto Boys, he followed through on plans to open a used car lot. Smith Luxury Motor Cars was profitable enough to afford Prince the financial resources to purchase the proper equipment for the aspiring artists to practice and record; hence the beginning of Rap-A-Lot Records. With the success of Rap-A-Lot Records, Mr. Prince expanded his businesses with the purchase of a 1,000 acre, black Angus cattle ranch known as the Prince Estate; the Strapped condom company; a professional boxing management company known as Prince Boxing Enterprises; and the launch of N-The Water Publishing Company. Mr. Prince has also continued to inspire with his philanthropic work in the community. With the establishment of the Bettie “MoMo” Chatmon Scholarship for scholastic achievement awards in honor of his grandmother and the non-profit Care-ALot Foundation, aiding the needy and indigent. Currently, plans are in motion to execute Prince’s establishment of a halfway house for ex-offenders to aid in their re-integration into society. In addition, he has erected a million dollar recreational facility in the heart of his childhood community that includes both basketball and boxing gymnasiums. Furthermore, Prince is negotiating the purchase of land for the development of affordable housing. A devout Christian, J. Prince has donated millions of dollars to religious and charitable organizations. In recognition of his efforts, Brookhollow Baptist Church (where he is a member) has named The James A. Prince Chapel in his honor.
