TEA TIME WITH LTG SALLY TSAI-TEA Hello beautiful Polar Bears! Can you believe that we are all halfway in our Key Club term? With our busy lives being a student, Key Clubber, and being involved in other extracurricular activities, time can seriously take a toll and pass by in a snap of our fingers! Despite our lives being on busy mode all the time, I would like to say good luck to all the seniors filling out college applications along with juniors taking standardized testing such as the ACT and the SAT! Personally, the fall season can be a very hard time for everyone's lives. With so much on our plate these days, time management may seem impossible. However, please do not worry because your support system is always there for you to listen to your vents, rants, or whatever is going on in your lives! Whether it's your family, Key Club officer, friends, or significant other, remember that they are always there for you no matter what! There might be something that is going on in someone's life and the smallest reach to this individual could make the difference in them being a better person. If you are every having a problem, please do not hesitate to reach out to me! Besides this very busy season, I highly encourage each and every one of you to consider attending Fall Rally South on Saturday, November 14th. What's Fall Rally you ask? It is a day where you spend the day at Six Flags Magic Mountain at Valencia, CA where Key Clubbers from Southern California all the way to Nevada celebrate all the funds raised for Pediatric Trauma Program through spirit battles and a rally! By shouting cheers at other Key Clubbers and having friendly competitive spirit battles, we show our spirit to service to each other! Please talk to your respective home clubs regarding Fall Rally pricing and information as soon as possible if you are interested! It is definitely understandable that Fall Rally may be a financial hardship to some individuals, however I do encourage you to fundraise, fundraise, fundraise! Even though fundraising may take a bit of work and time, I can honestly tell you that it is honestly worth it in the end. After going through the process of fundraising and raising the funds you needed, you look back and feel a sense of accomplishment for putting in hard work for something worth it. If you ever need any fundraising ideas or suggestions, please reach out to me or the Fundraising Coordinator, Brian Plain (d06s.keyclub.fundcoordinator2@gmail.com). Last year, when I attended my very first Fall Rally, I had no idea that Key Club spirit was something bigger. It's representing the division you serve, all the hours you have served to help your community, and cheering your heart out. Everywhere I look at Fall Rally, I saw members that had no problem going 110% all out on the "How do you Feel?" cheer or joining in an intimidating a loud spirit battle. At the end of the day, you truly realize that Key Club isn't simply a service organization, but a one-of-kind service organization that is our ohana and opens doors to new opportunities. This year, I believe we can take on the Spirit Stick during the rally, raise $1,000 for Pediatric Trauma Program, and show everyone that Polar Bears are the best! Have a wonderful October and I hope to see you soon!

OUTSTANDING POLAR BEARS 5

MemBer of the Month: LUKE XU, LINFIELD In the beginning, I had little to no connection with Luke besides him being a member at Linfield Christian Key Club. One day, Chance Kang, the President, messaged me regarding of a member interested in being the Division Historian. After examining his work, I knew he would be perfect for Division Historian. After only being able to attend Key to College/May DCM before leaving to China the entire summer, Luke was definitely missed after only receiving an opportunity to make it to a few Key Club events. Despite him being MIA for quite a while, he managed to make the greatest comeback of all time. Luke isn't simply just the Division Historian, but a creative man behind the scenes. At times, when facilitating division events, I observe Luke looking for that perfect moment to capture with his camera. After DCM's, you could even see him walking around taking pictures to submerge himself in the environment he's in by taking a second and snapping the perfect photograph. It completely astonishes me how much effort he puts in his passion for photography and the amazing results he receives with his quality and numerous compliments after every DCM. With his very humble and shy personality, he still manages to take that step outside his comfort zone to learn more and become more involved with this organization and to make Linfield's first year of being chartered a great one. With his many efforts to complete his DLT work well and contribute to the division as much as he can, I can proudly say that he is the Member of the Month.

Officer of the Month:

Dana truong, chaparral Whenever I think of Dana, I think of hard work and making things happen. Back when I was a freshman, I remember Dana encouraging me to join this organization called Key Club she heard about during the freshman orientation. Not really knowing what we were about to get ourselves into, we went to the first meeting and soon joined as an official member. 2 years later, I became Vice President and she became Secretary. Ever since she was elected Secretary, I saw her working hard from day one. Although she wasn't entirely familiar with the Monthly Report Form, she kept challenging herself by dedicating time to learn more about it and understanding every single tab, section, fill-in box, and information to it. Fast forward to junior year, I became elected Lieutenant Governor. During the process of choosing the Division Leadership Team, I knew I had to choose a Division Secretary that knew the MRF inside and out and had the passion of serving people to their fullest. After some time, I knew the perfect person was Dana. With extraordinary results from each and every task I assign her and her crazy balance of work, academics, and Key Club, she has truly shown herself as a distinguished officer. Thank you Dana for your great service and reaching out to me for joining this beautiful organization!

CLUB of the Month: RANCHO VERDE A year ago when I truly dedicated myself to Key Club and attended almost every single Division Event, I soon realized that Rancho Verde was a large club filled with members that had the greatest passion for service. Now, I see them as the same and one of the strongest clubs in the division we serve. With countless service hours, Rancho Verde is known to be service-oriented more than anything. Every member is sincerely there for the benefit of the community and nothing else. With their high attendance of 170 members at their first interest meeting and successful runDisney event, I have no doubt that the Rancho Verde board will have no problem leading these amazing individuals. With Kimberly Austria as President and Dejah White as CoPresident, they have already begun the layout for the entire year and delegated tasks accordingly. With the loving spirit Rancho Verde offers along with their club-breaking records, I am proud to give the award of Club of the Month to them.

polar bear prep

written by: Brian plain, chaparral

What better way to prepare the division for the biggest member recruitment day of the year than for everyone to work and promote together. That is exactly what Chaparral High School’s Key Club did when they hosted the August 22nd Club Rush Prep Day. Meeting in Temecula’s Morgan Hill, Chaparral and all the other available clubs that day turned out to help make posters and promotional pieces to help increase their school’s interest in their organization. Working within each club's members and officers, each school produced a plethora of banners and artwork that put Key Club on full display. The day saw a great amount of collaboration and hard work that led to beautifully designed posters and advertisements. This hard work was more than paid off at each clubs first meeting. None more so than Chaparral’s. Throughout the month of August, Chaparral’s officers had been working to figure out how to attract the most students possible for their first meeting. After much discussion, the officers decided to offer free ice cream to all those that attend the first meeting. That sign up day saw an endless stream of people come by Key Club’s table eager to sign up. This great advertising technique ended up luring the most students to a first meeting Chaparral has ever seen. Chaparral Key Club welcomed more than 170 interested high school students who went for the ice cream, but stayed for the club's message and call for action. Overall, Chaparral has seen August as a month of growth and as a promising look into what the coming year holds for them. It is clear that this fantastic start to the school year is just the beginning to what Chaparral’s Key Club will achieve in the coming months.

park prep

On August 22, Key Club members from Division 6 North and South joined together to prepare for Club Rush at Madigan Park. They decorated posters, pencil labels, popsicle sticks, and 'origami' polar bears in colorful lettering and designs explaining why people should join Key Club. About 40 members turned up, all enthusiastic to expand the club through their service in this event. With paintbrushes and markers in hand and water bottles at their side, members painted and drew away in the 100+ degree heat. After working for about two hours, everyone joined together in a photo scavenger hunt. Next, dinner was eaten in the form of a potluck. Finally, a game of glow in the dark tag was put together. The day ended with cheerful goodbyes, everyone satisfied that Club Rush would be a blast because all were ready with items to hand out promoting the club. Overall, the Club Rush preparation was a success.

hunger games - pbear style Division 6 South brought the Hunger Games to Pala Park on August 29th. Everyone was pretty excited days before the event, awaiting the DLT and President pie, eLEMONate challenge, and the fun games planned. Before the actual games began, Alan Baez led some Ice Breakers and Sally Tsai led the monthly Division Council Meeting. We broke into 4 districts: Luxury, Technology, Nuclear, and Power. A series of fun activities began, and competition divided D6S. First we had a sort of relay race in which 1 person from each district at a time had to suck up a Skittle on a table with a straw and bring it back to a cup. After that was a fashion show, and District 5 again dominated with their unexpected and cleverly directed performance (“Just DO IT!” –District 5). Thankfully it started to cool down, and the next activity involved a lot of running; in the Tracker Jacker game, everyone was given a set of “stickers” and had to try to “sting” other districts’ members. 3 stings and you’re out. Finally, the last game was Balloon Stomping. It was really a free for all, and there was myriad of popping. We ended the day with a picnic with Subway, chips, and drinks, and a few extra non-competitive activities. District 5 was announced the champions of the Hunger Games. The eLEMONate challenge rose money to fight maternal/neonatal tetanus and the $2 pies rose money for PTP (in a matter of minutes, numerous people were covered in whipped cream. At least it wasn’t shaving cream!). We cleaned up and one by one began to go home to rest after the busy day.

9

I had the best time with the best people. We all got together and did super fun games like popping each other's balloons and tagging others with stickers till they were out. Also, we raised money for MNT and PTP. As my first DCM, I feel more welcomed and excited for what key club has in store this year! We were "lit" and “chill," but most of all, WE ARE POLAR BEARS!” –Lilianne Maloles, Freshman Secretary of Heritage

first meeting of the year

At Linfield Key Club in August, we had our first meeting of the new school year. We did not have club rush yet, so it was just with our previous members. They were ecstatic to hear that Linfield Key Club was officially chartered, and could not wait to meet other Key Clubbers at a future event. Our officers got together and discussed-mostly on posters and promotion for Club Rush. Abbey Carrasco, our secretary, is a big help in poster making. Tim Hart, the treasurer, wants to pass out small pieces of candy at our booth to promote. But most of all, we plan to attract new members through our Key Club spirit!

PREPPING POLAR BEARS

written by: GABE FABIAN, PALOMA VALLEY

Paloma Valley High school’s officers have not forgotten about all the polar cubs that are awaiting the new term and energy packed events. They have been endlessly working on club rush advertisements, preparing the meeting powerpoints, filing out fundraisers applications, and spending after school hours coming together for the greater good of the club to make sure everything is all in place to get started. They are ready to have everyone come back together and start this year with a Roar! Even though they were not able to head out to the division club rush rep day they didn't let that stop them. Instead they joined forces and created flyers, posters, clothespins, and more to get the word out about the wonderful club that nobody should be missing out on. Paint was everywhere, pins were flying, and 21st century technology was being put to good use. All the officers over at PVHS are so ready and excited to fill up the sign up sheets and start having some fun all in the name of Kiwanis. Brace yourselves for one wild term to come.

rancho verde - rundisney This month the Rancho Verde Key Club had our first event, runDisney. Although there were some minor miscommunications on things like the barcodes required for entry to the event. Although little things like that didn’t get in our way since we were at the happiest place on earth. Everything went well and all the tasks were completed and so were our hours of service which is the most important thing. This month was a great month for Rancho Verde Key club. "Disney runs are always a great way to see your work approved by others since nearly hundreds of people are witnessing the accomplishment of your efforts. It sure feels like the happiest place on earth being able to work alongside by fellow polar bears and I can't wait for our next one!" -Nohely Hernandez, Rancho Verde Editor My runDisney experience was great but tiring! This was my first time volunteering for the gear bags for the runners, and I've seen a lot of my members worked together to finish their tasks. This service was such a great way to start Key Club. Not only did the members seem to enjoy it but they've also bonded with each other. I look forward to seeing my members work like this again! -Kimberley Austria, Rancho Verde Key Club CoPresident runDisney was a really great experience for me. I learned what it's like to be behind the scenes of the huge events Disney produces and enjoyed promoting fitness with my friends. As always, we had a great time doing community service in an exciting and unique way. The free Disneyland ticket didn't hurt either! I definitely look forward to doing more events with Disney in the future. -Dejah White, Rancho Verde Key Club CoPresident

D6S HUNGER GAMES

On August 29, all of the division joined to get updated, play games, and raise money for PTP and Eliminate. The division bonded on a sunny day at Madigan park. As we played games, the competition raised. We split up into separate districts based on the movie The Hunger Games. As the games began, every man was left to fend for himself. After the games ended, we all came together to raise more for PTP by paying to pie the presidents or DLT! LTG Sally was covered in cream from the love that the division showed her. We also raised money for Eliminate from the Elemonate challenge. In the Elemonate challenge three competitors went raced to see who could clean their lemon off of the rime first. The winner got to have the title of first, but let’s be real , when eating sour lemons there really was no winner. The children and mothers whose lives we saved with our proceeds will be thankful for all those who participated.

EDITORIAL: BETWEEN SCHOOL AND SERVICE It's no secret that time is precious. With school and being involved with the club and division we serve, it can all seem overwhelming. But even with the pressures of school, there is always a way to find time to serve your community. Even if academics are not a defining factor in our worth as people, remember not to let yourself fall behind in what you need to do. Key Club International recognizes that school comes before Key Club. School is a big part of our future, especially when it comes to how we apply what we learn. Whether it’s in a certain field of careers or a simple situation at home that you need to figure out, education is key to many aspects of our lives. Sometimes we underestimate how lucky we are to have an education, and it’s hard to remember until you realize someone, somewhere else, may not have the opportunities that we have. So don’t overlook how important your education is. We have school for a reason, and it’s for us to be the leaders into a new future. No matter how stressful it gets, there is always something to help balance your life.

15

While school comes first, sometimes academics can take a ride in the backseat. It’s alright to take breaks from some of the things that burn us out. Recognize that you can be a good student and you can also make an impact in your town from anything as small as a clean up, a recycling program, or volunteering to tutor some elementary school kids. Going from calculus to clean ups might seem exhausting, but sometimes you need a mental break. You’re supposed to have fun once in a while. If we didn’t relax every now and then, how could we enjoy our lives? There will always be a balance between the things that we need to do and the things that we love to do. It takes some experimenting, and maybe some mistakes might be made along the way, but when balancing school and Key Club, realize that in the balance, you should be enjoying your life. Whether you enjoy what you do in school or the service, leadership, and friendship you have in Key Club, “if you keep moving, you will come to a better place,” - Uncle Iroh.
