Hi Ninjas! Unfortunately summer has come to and end, but I hope you all had a pleasant transition into the school year. Assuming most of you have had your club’s rush, I’m very excited to see all the new members of Division 13 South. Just a quick reminder, please remember to pay your club dues! Each club’s dues will vary so please ask the president of your home club. With that being said, being a paid member will allow you to go to many exciting events such as Fall Rally and RTC where many Key Clubbers have experienced their “Key Club moment” If you’d like to write an article about any of your Key Club experiences during October please email me at d13s.cnhkc.dne@gmail.com! Don’t forget to send pictures too! Have a great day! Crystal Kem *Key Club Moment — a moment in which a Key Clubber has realized what Key Club truly is.

Throughout this last month Bellflower High’s Key Clubbers took on Meals On Wheels several mornings every week. The Meals On Wheels Association is an international organization that has worked to serve the senior community for decades. The program provides daily senior nutrition and food services throughout the week. Our club was able to locate a local association and contribute to this cause for the elderly in need. We were able to help out by coming in early to prepare meal arrangements accommodating the conditions of the people. Meals On Wheels provides healthy meals through a delivery system to those who are not only watching their diet, but of limited mobility. Volunteering with Meals On Wheels gave us a sense of purpose in our community as we were able to directly serve the people, and even more so, the older generation who appreciate that youth cares.
Throughout the summer our club was able to volunteer at the local city’s public library. Every Wednesday for the library’s story time we prepared crafts and activities after the reading session with the children. We assisted the kids working on their artistic projects and even participated in creating some designs ourselves. We had fun being the kids in our hearts once again while spending time with the children of the future. Family Game Night was held every Thursday for parents and their children to have fun and bond, while we Key Clubbers got to play our role as well. We helped set up the entertainment ranging from board games to simple card games. We encouraged and taught families, letting parents relearn old games from their own childhood and children discovering what would be their new favorites. When a kid was sitting alone staring at a game that was for five players, Key Clubbers gathered up and made his day. We played the role of par-
From 5 to 9 p.m. on August 20th, Mayfair High School Key Club hosted a fundraiser at Pieology, a local pizza shop, to raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program. Fifteen percent of all purchases made by customers with event fliers were collected by Key Club to be given to the cause. Pieology is like a pizza version of Subway or Chipotle, so it is understandably popular. This greatly helped the fundraiser! The Pediatric Trauma Program is a Kiwanis-created program to help prevent and reduce the amount of unintentional injuries that put children in harm so frequently. Since about 90% of unintentional injuries can be prevented, the Pediatric Trauma Program works to educate and train communities about pediatric trauma. Mayfair Key Club has been working hard to support the Pediatric Trauma Program: not only with fundraisers and collecting change but also by spreading awareness of pediatric trauma, which will hopefully assist in saving children’s lives from preventable injuries.
On September 6th and 7th, Mayfair volunteered at a Festival held at St. Pancratius Catholic Church with Long Beach Polytechnic, St. John Bosco, and Jordan High School. Starting at 9am, we got to work with cutting onions and mincing garlic for the Filipino Food Booth. From then it was a busy day, from sweeping the areas to working game and food booths. Some of the game booths we volunteered at were the “Ad Them Up” darts game, Duck Pond Ring Toss, Colorama, etc. The shifts lasted from 9am to 10pm – with some dedicated members staying either the whole time or most of the shift. It was a fun event to work at because there were a lot of people who were friendly, the food tasted great, and you could ride any of the festival rides when you were done. Although it was a very hot weekend – sometimes reaching up to 94° F – we still got to enjoy doing service and spending time with fellow Key Clubbers
