What’s poppin’ Happy August Red Devils! I hope you all had an amazing Fourth of July and a huge thank you to those who came out on that holiday and volunteered at the Division Wide Service. Sadly, summer is coming to an end and school is starting again. Be prepared to be busier during the school year so make sure you are balancing out your time for Key Club. I would recommend to effectively utilize a planner. On the good note, new school year means new members! I am so excited for clubs to start recruitment and have a boom in service hours. Remember to stay humble and be welcoming to retain new members! Sizzling with service,

This event was located at the Deer Valley Football Field, but that didn’t stop Key Clubbers from attending. This event got Key Clubbers to get involved in many ways. If you thought there was a dry moment during this event, you were wrong. We set up water fights for all to come and join, splashing each other around. We ran laps for the relay, taking breaks at the mist hut. Heck, we also ran our own spirit lap led by our Spirit Coordinator Joren Hitosis! At the end of our lap, we won a spirit battle against the Deer Valley Cheerleaders! It was a great way to spend the summer as well. As some members had to leave, others continued working hard to make this event successful. This event wouldn’t be called “Relay for Life” without a reason. Some members assisted in sponsoring cars for races. Others at our booth sold energy drinks and bubbles. We also set up a luminaria that spelled out “HERO” symbolizing our hope for cancer treatment. With the great efforts from our Key Clubbers, we believe this event truly became a relay for life.

Pancake Breakfast & Antioch Parade The Rivertown Resource Center hosted a free pancake breakfast on 4th of July. Deer Valley and Dozier Libbey joined forces and volunteered early morning to help set up tables, chairs, tablecloths, monitor stations, and assist patrons. Thanks to Betty, the main organizer of the pancake breakfast, Key Clubbers got their breakfast for free because they helped out! Right after the pancake breakfast, we participated in the 4th of July parade hosted annually in downtown Antioch. - Gyle Viloria | Deer Valley

Mount Diablo 4th of July Celebration

For this celebration, Key Clubbers were asked to help run carnival booths and work as parking attendants. Everyone from around the area came to enjoy each other’s company and an awesome firework show at the end of the night. Throughout the event booths with games and food were set up for people to enjoy. As more families came, the busier, but better the event became. Even though our clubbers could have chosen to spend 4th of July with their own families, they chose to help others run this celebration for all of the people and families who came to have a wonderful time. 13

Ocean Beach Clean up

The cleanup took place at Ocean Beach on July 24th. Five members and two volunteers spent one hour picking up trash. We found all types of garbage including beer bottles, food wrappers, and bits of plastic lying around the beach. By the time we finished, our group filled two bags! - Christine Tran | Clayton Valley

Editor Closing Hi there Red Devils! Summer is coming to an end, school is approaching. Be prepared for those honors and ap classes! If you do read this shoot me an email, with that being said, I will now insert star wars summary and no one can stop me. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away. Palpatine, an evil Sith Lord, has overthrown the galactic Republic and become emperor of the new Empire. The Jedi Knights, an ancient peacekeeping order empowered and guided by the Force, have been eradicated. Princess Leia Organa is a member of the Rebel Alliance, a group fighting to defeat the Empire and restore the Republic. She’s on a mission to bring Obi Wan Kenobi, an exiled Jedi living on Tatooine, to Alderan. The mission fails when her spaceship falls under attack by an Imperial star cruiser. Leia hides stolen schematicsof the Empire’s Death Star, a powerful new space station, inside R2D2, a small droid, R2 and another android, C3P0 stow away in an escape pod and jettison to Tatooine. The two droids are found by Jawas and sold to farmer Owen Lars. Owen’s young nephew and farmhand, Luke Skywalker dreams of leaving Tatooine and becoming a pilot like his late father. While cleaning the small droid, Luke stumbles across a partial holographic message for Obi Wan Kenobi. Intrigued by the beautiful young woman in the holograph, he thinks the message may be for Ben Kenobi, a hermit living on the outskirts.
