LTG Welcome HELLO, Red Devils! It's Leon, your Lieutenant Governor, here to serve YOU to the best of my ability! I can't believe it's already been three months since the start of this new term, and I'm so proud to have already seen so many accomplishments and improvements made throughout division. We've had our most clubs represented at our DCMs, the most Monthly Report Forms sent in, AND we've already raised almost $300 dollars as a division total...all in the first two months! There aren't words to describe how proud I am to serve as your Lieutenant Governor and how thrilled I am to see us do greater things and have an even bigger effect on our community in the next coming months.

First off, it was a blast seeing all of you at our June events! To those of you who went to our End-of-the-Year Banquet with Division 2 and Division 26 South, I hope you all had a blast and got to meet new members from all over the Bay Area. It was definitely great seeing all of you there and seeing people get recognized for all that they did over the 2012-2013 term. It's always amazing to see how Key Club has affected the lives of so many people, and I hope Banquet inspired you to continue on your Key Club journey in service and leadership! Second, thanks to everyone who came out to our Officer Training Conference and DCM at San Leandro Public Library! I know it was a long, long drive for some of you, so I wanted to take a moment and give a HUGE thank you to all those who took the time out of their day to come to this event. I hope you found it helpful and motivating for you to do your VERY BEST as a leader of your club this year, and I hope you can take that information back to your club so you can make the best out of this term! In closing, please remember summer vacation DOES NOT mean the end of Key Club! Key Club is a year-round organization, and service never stops, even during summer break! Take this time off of school to focus on your Key Club work, to participate in community service all over your area and continue changing the lives of people around you. Use this time to think of a creative fundraiser for you and your club to participate in, or to find unique service projects for your club and keep on making a difference in your community! There are so many opportunities all around you, whether it be helping out at a food bank, participating in a walk-a-thon, or restoring a nearby pond or park. Keep your eyes out, utilize tools such as the Internet and talk to adults around you so that you can always be doing service no matter what time of the year it is! Thanks everyone for all of your hard work, and I hope you have an amazing month! See you at our July DCM! Burning with Service, your LTG Leon 5

Division Leadership Team Greetings

Executive Assistant Jennifer Lam

Hi, I'm Jennifer Lam from Concord High school. I'm a sophomore this year, an upcoming junior. I'm the type of person who wants to help out whenever I can. I guess I can say I like being a leader, assisting friends and I always try to contribute as much as I can. Although I'm shy at first, I can be pretty outgoing once I get comfortable around someone. I'm not too serious, nor am I too silly. I know when to be serious when to just lay back and have fun. Hobbies of mine are basketball, singing, writing, meeting new people, and just being with close friends and family. Basketball has been a passion and hobby of mine ever since I was young, and I'm always looking to get better and better. I chose to run for Executive Assistant because I wanted to contribute to our division, grow our division dramatically, and give extra help to Leon, our LTG. Being an EA allows me to be more active in our division, which was one of my goals. I only joined key club this year, and I'm glad I did. I was able to step out of my shell and learn a lot about myself, others, and Key Club International, especially after DCON. DCON was a life changing experience, and I highly encourage everyone to attend the next convention. Honestly, Key Club has changed me into a different person, but for the better. I am more open to others' perspectives and opinions. Always lend a helping hand, because we're all one ohana. Anyways, let's go D26 North! 6

Executive Assistant Vivian Chong

Hey Key Club! I’m Vivian Chong from College Park High School and I am one of the Division 26 North Executive Assistants. I am the current Freshman Class President at College Park and I am running unopposed for Sophomore Class President for next year. It’s a great experience and privilege being in leadership at school, and I am even more excited and honored to represent my school and our Key Club through the Division 26 North Leadership Team. I am the type of person who puts in effort and dedication when it comes to doing something I love. My priorities in life are family and friends, school work, leadership, and God. I am a perfectionist, so I am very organized and responsible. I am also very artistic and creative with making posters. Key Club has been an amazing experience for me. I signed up without even knowing what it was about but from the first meeting until now, I have met so many great people and participated in activities that changed me to become a better person. Through Key Club, I have learned that I love lending a hand to the community and even though people may take our work for granted, we feel satisfied because we know how much work we actually did without expecting anything in return. I decided to run for executive assistant because the officers from my school recommended that I sign up for the position. I was immediately interested and decided to apply, and I am so happy that I got it! I am so honored to be able to represent you guys, and I will work my hardest to make this year a very successful and productive one for all of you, because you are my motivation and inspiration.7

Division News Editor Desiree Choe

Hey Red Devils! My name is Desiree Choe, and I am extremely excited to be part of the D26N Leadership Team! I am sixteen years old, and currently an upcoming senior at Northgate High School. I am a pretty easy-going and friendly person, and I absolutely love writing, editing and designing, which is what prompted me to run for the position of Division News Editor. am also very creative and adore art of all kinds. I currently run a small online business where I sell handmade bracelets, along with various other artwork and commissions. Throughout my high school career so far, Key Club has been a super fun way to give back to the community and interact with different kinds of people, and I have had countless wonderful experiences within it. I cannot stress the importance of what we do as an organization – I’m astounded by what we have accomplished, and am looking forward to seeing what new goals we can reach together. Needless to say, I am definitely really excited to be able to serve Key Club through my position as the Divi8 sion 26 North News Editor! Let’s make this year the best one yet!

CLUB UPDATES

What have we been up to during June?

Antioch During June, the only event our club participated in was the set-up for the bimonthly or longer Antioch Public library booksale. The date was June 6th and the event lasted about 2-3 hours. We helped with moving the books from a truck into a specific room. We also checked to see that the books were in a specific order (alphabetical, by author, series... etc). In the future, we are also planning to help with the Relay For Life which is happening next Saturday by serving breakfast. For July, we hope to be able to get our members together and do a service project together.

College Park This month, Key Club members of College Park High School volunteered at the Food Bank in Concord. We helped sort and package food into boxes, which will be sent to the less privileged. We had a lot of fun working and managed to sort and pack boxes of apples thanks to our Key Club members. Thanks to their help, there will be less hungry people. 9

10

Concord These past few months, Concord Key Club had the opportunity to serve our district by fundraising and participating in many service occasions. Our club participated in the Way Finder Cleanup, which you can read more about on page 12.

Mt. Diablo Mt. Diablo High’s Key Club has remained active in our community with members volunteering together in groups or separately pursuing their own opportunities. This July, we hope to raise more money and develop PTP fundraiser ideas.

10

11

Northgate Northgate Key Club participated in an environmental cleanup in Downtown Walnut Creek. Our team helped improve the habitat of our Downtown creeks by clearing an invasive bamboo-like plant called Arundo. This cleanup raised our awareness of our environment and provided us with ways that we can benefit our home, school, and community. The simple knowledge of knowing where to dispose of toxic waste can really help the environment. Little things such as this can make a difference.

Pittsburg We just concluded the year and collected the contact information of the members that will participate in Relay for Life. Currently, two of my officers are out of the country. In their absence, my vice presidents and I will try to fundraise for Relay and also help the other members finish their community service for the summer. Once they come back, we will have an official board meeting at least every week to plan for Relay for Life in Pittsburg which will be on the 20th of July. We hope to plan and organize everything for the upcoming school year during our board meetings and general club meetings. As president, I plan to make this one of the strongest years for Pittsburg High Key Club. Even if the rest of the school's spirit is at its lowest, I will make the Key Club spirit in my school the best it could be this year. Speaking of which, I am interested being the Spirit Coordinator for Fall Rally North this year. My plan this summer is to have a spirit session where every club in the division will

Service Articles Way Finder Cleanup Mikaela Tancioco >> Concord High School These past few months we had the opportunity to serve our district by fundraising and many service occasions. One event in particular was the Way Finder Clean Up that was held at Todos Santos. Concord’s Key Club went on a scavenger hunt to find and wash way finders posted all around the area. Way finders are posts located at specific street ends in order to guide people to their destination. Even through the scorching heat, we were determined help make our city a welcoming neighborhood. In addition, we were able to fundraise $150 from our day’s tedious but delightful work. Those who were able to be a part of this event found it enjoyable and fun. It not only makes the community more presentable, but allows those who are not familiar with the area to find their way. Sharing moments like these not only brings the club together, but unites us as a family. We look forward to the future experiences and opportunities headed our way to support our community.

Bay Area KidFest Lesliejane Paeda >>> Mt. Diablo

On Sunday and Monday of the Memorial Day weekend, the Mount Diablo Key Club volunteered at the Bay Area KidFest. Throughout the day, members came in and helped with all aspects of the festival. Some members volunteered along with the local Food Bank at the festival entrance and collected cans, distributed discount coupons for entrance tickets, and passed out silly bands for the families and children. Other members worked inside the festival doing the various jobs in different booths. In the kid art and face painting booth, Key Club members were able to work alongside their fellow students helping kids create paintings or designs and pictures on children's faces. At the "Field of Dreams" sports field, members worked amongst their fellow athletes in assisting children and their families in fulfilling sport events and teaching the kids how to play various sports such as tennis, lacrosse, and soccer. The Bay Area KidFest is a volunteer opportunity that the Mount Diablo Key Club often participates in, and this year was another fun and successful festival. 13

Aloha Banquet

On June 8, over 100 members of Division 2, Division 26 North, and Division 26 South came together at the San Leandro Boys and Girls Club to celebrate a year of tremendous achievements. Wonderful officers were recognized and awarded, and members of all three divisions bonded over yummy BBQ and the performances of talented dancers and singers. Together, we said aloha to the old term and aloha to the new term.

It’s wonderful to see people come together and celebrate Key Club’s accomplishments. I was able to make new friends, have fun, and be more familiar with the upper officers. Shoutout to Matthew and his fantastic singing—It gave me goose bumps! -Monica Willemsz, CP President

Officer Training Conference San Leandro Public Library, June 15 On June 15th, officers and members of Division 2, 26 North, and 26 South came together at the San Leandro Public Library in order to become more educated on Key Club International as an organization and gain some valuable leadership skills. A message from your LTG, Leon Pan: “A HUGE thank you to all 33 of you who made it out to our Officer Training Conference in San Leandro this past Saturday. Not only did we have the most representation out of all of the divisions there, but we also achieved our OUTSTANDING goal of having all 9/9 clubs represented at both OTC and our DCM. There aren't any words to describe how proud and honored I am to serve as your Lieutenant Governor; we haven't had 100% club representation at our DCMs in many years, and it's my hope that we can continue this trend! Just a reminder that to those of you who could not make it to OTC or didn't get to take enough notes there as you had wanted, please go to tinyurl.com/kiwidevilotc in order to access all of the Powerpoints and hand-outs that we used throughout the event.

“OTC was really informative and I gained some really valuable knowledge on how to make our Key Club stronger for next school year! It was super fun and I got to meet officers from clubs all over the division. I would strongly recommend that everyone attends the next one! Melanie Paul, Northgate V.P

Looking Forward: Relay for Life information With summer buzzing about, more and more Relay for Life events are available throughout the East Bay. The following are scheduled over summer vacation: Walnut Creek - Bancroft Elementary School, July 13, 9:00 am Concord - Todos Santos Plaza, July 13, 10:00 am Pittsburg - Los Medanos College, July 20, 10:00 am As many of you know, Relay for Life is an amazing 24-hour event organized by the American Cancer Society which involves teams camping out overnight and taking turns either walking or running around a track while also raising funds to fight against cancer. If you do not wish to form your own team, you can volunteer by helping to set up on the day of the event or stuffing envelopes, just to name a few opportunities. There are however, some protocol that we have to follow as Key Clubbers. The following guidelines must be adhered to: 1) Clubs should be on separate teams, not joined together to form one team. 2) There must be a responsible chaperone (can be a parent, a Faculty Advisor, or a Kiwanian) present for every 12 Key Clubbers. 3) Each participating club must obtain approval from its sponsoring Kiwanis Club. 4) If a club wishes to stay overnight (which is recommended, as that's one of the biggest parts of the entire event), an Event Request Form (ERF) MUST be signed and filled out by the appropriate individuals. The ERF involves a description of the event (which club is participating, who from the club is invited, location, date, etc.), contact information (including the name of the person filling out the form, as well as a responsible adult), and signatures from the club's Faculty and Kiwanis advisors, Regional Advisors, and the District Administrator. While this process may seem taunting, I assure you that it's really not that bad at all and this protocol is only here to establish organization and safety for Key Clubbers. -Leon Pan, LTG 20

Pocket Tees for PTP!

One of our lovely EAs, Jennifer, is selling these pocket tees! They are each $10; $8 of each purchase goes towards PTP. This is an awesome way to fundraise! Got someone in your club who is crafty? Get your members together and brainstorm ideas for things that you can make and sell in order to raise money for this excellent cause! If you’d like one of these Tees, be sure to contact Jennifer, and if you’d like to have your fundraising advertised in the next newsletter, please contact me! 24

DNE’s Closing Message

Hey Red Devils! Wow, summer is already here! What a relief to be out of school! I hope everyone will be enjoying a leisurely break full of family, friends, and fun! But remember that even though the school year is over, we still continue serving our community! The end of school doesn’t mean the end of service. This past month has been great. I have learned so much about Key Club International at OTC, and I got to meet fellow Key Clubbers at the Aloha Banquet. You all inspire me to give back, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of you at our next DCM! We had 9/9 clubs represented at our last one—seriously, WOW! Let’s keep that up! I hope you all enjoyed my first installment of The Inferno, Division 26N’s official Newsletter. Thanks for reading! Any comments or questions are welcomed! Keep up the good work Red Devils! You’re all doing a FANTASTIC job! In Service,

Desiree Choe, Division News Editor 25
