HELLO, RED DEVILS! Hello Red Devils! As the new school year begins, and things like the SAT, ACT, RTC, FRN, Key Leader, sports, Key Club, Club Rush, Registration, and many more activities begin to pop up, please remember to not stress and overwork yourself. Although you should be working your hardest in meeting deadlines for all activities, remember to take mental breathers and ASK FOR HELP. How can you care for someone else, your family, friends, all while doing well in school if you are not up-to-par with your own health? You can't even if you tried. Our health determines whether we will be leading that service project tomorrow, attending that first Key Club meeting of the term the next Tuesday, selling lemonade in the hot sun to raise funds to PTP, and so so much more. As the you flip through the following pages, I humbly ask of you to put your phone aside for five minutes. This way, you can really focus on this newsletter as if you were studying for a test 20 minutes before the test starts. You will have moments when you will fall, but Red Devils sizzle and we do not burn out. We are fire, and we burn with service! Sizzling with service, Wencie Hoang Division 26 North Lt. Governor 2016-17

International Convention July 3 - 10, 2016 Atlanta, Georgia "International Convention was where I had my "Key Club moment." Although every moment in Key Club has been my favorite. ICON definitely hit the spot. The first 3 1/2 days were for touring the beautiful and historic city of Atlanta. We got to experience watching the fireworks on July 4th in the heart of town, go to Lanier World to face my fear of water, watch the laser show at Stone Mountain and take pictures at the top of a mountain, visit Martin Luther King, Jr.'s childhood home, ride a ferris wheel in the middle of town to see the entire city skyscraper style, visit the CNN building where all news from around the world gets transferred to, and try Coca-Cola soft drinks from Asia to South Africa. The remaining 3 1/2 days were spent at the convention. Here, I had to experience to learn about the elections process for the Internation Board consisting of the International President, Vice President, and 11 Trustees. It was a beautiful experience being able to witness the CNH Key Club and CNH Kiwins join hands in fighting against the Fourth Amendment. This amendment was proposed by Manatee Key Club from the Florida District, and stated that two districts could not share the same geographic boundaries. This would have resulted in losing over 2,000 members of our Kiwanis family, for there are many Key Clubs in the CNH Key Club district having both Key Club and Kiwins at the school. This meant that the school had to pick one of the two, and eliminate the other club. This experience taught me the importance of understanding what's going on around me, the large impacts mine and others' decisions can make, and more about how to fight for what I want to see happen. " -Wencie Hoang Division 26 North Lt. Governor

Summer Board Training Conference July 29th - August 2nd

"At Summer Board Training Conference, I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting our CNH Key Club District International Trustee, William Zhang, from the Eastern Canada District. It was awesome being able to reunite with everyone from District Board, for we only get to see each other less than 10 times during the term. At the Summer Olympics, I learned a lot of new ideas and games that we could use for socials, bondings, and even fundraisers! After 3 days of training, it was heartwarming being able to explore the Los Angeles area with the rest of the Region 9 family. Thank you so much to our Region Advisor, Victor, for planning this trip!"

JULY DCM | REGION 9 OLYMPICS

Abracadabra!

Oh hey there, fellow wizard! At the July DCM, the first ever Region 9 Olympics were held on Saturday, July 23rd at Civic Park in Walnut Creek! Lt. Governors were leading their houses to victory with their Executive Assistants, and the money raised from selling otter pops went towards PTP! Congratulations to house Ravenclaw for winning the Olympics! Go sister division!

August DCM & Summer Coffee House

Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016 Boys & Girls Club of Martinez

The August DCM & Summer Coffee House raised a total of $258 for the Pediatric Trauma Program. Did you know trauma emains one of the leading causes of death for children under the age of 14? Thank you to everyone who helped make this project so successful!

Congratulations to the Award Winners for August! Remember, it's not the title, award, or position you receive that defines you. A number and a grade letter does not define you. You define your own path to success in accomplishing all of your goals, not expectations.

Antioch Key Club Article: Antioch Library Book Fair by Jonathan Williams, Club Editor

Antioch Key Club is wrapping up their Summer this August to assist with a Book Fair held by the Antioch Library. The assistance with the Book Fair was an ideal way for our participating Key Clubbers to connect with the community around them and try and help the busy librarians with the hectic loading and unloading of books, along with the disposal of unneeded library items. Participating members took great pleasure in each other’s company, helped in the library and enjoyed being of assistance in easing both physical and mental burdens from the librarians involved. Our Club was only able to participate in this event because there were no other service events offered, but our members were eagerly awaiting any news that the community needed from other Kiwanis members. We will be able to use our positive working energy to do even more events next month.

On July 17, 2016, Key clubbers from Clayton Valley Charter High School volunteered at the Aids Walk. The event helped show support to people who have AIDS and who have died from it. Key clubbers went out and helped by volunteering in crowd control. Club members worked together to help control the crowd and also guiding them where they needed to be. The AIDS walk event well without any pressure besides the cold weather. Miguel Hernandez, fellow key clubber recalled the even being, “fun experience especially that we got to work together as team. This was a cool experience for key clubbers because they got to bond with other key clubbers and also meet new people from other community service organizations. -Josh Castro, Clayton Valley High School Editor

Division 26 North | Concord Key Club Concord Key Club Article: Taste of Concord by Keane Escueta, Club Editor For the Taste of Concord, volunteers were allowed to arrive for different shifts, consisting of different jobs. Volunteers were assigned to tables, one where they provided information about the event, while the other table was in charge of a silent auction. After some time, volunteers were also asked to man stations where people could get food. As a reward for volunteering, we were also allowed to participate in the event, and get free food!

Concord Key Club Article: Walk-through Setup by Keane Escueta As an extension of our sort of board meeting, we allowed members to help us with our setup for our school’s walkthrough table. We prepared a poster board explaining Key Club and its purpose, and made a mockup ID for pictures. For publicity, we made clothespins and lollipops with notes on them. As for how this affects our school’s community, we made separate pins for other clubs, and we are also going to be helping set up walkthrough overall, as opposed to just our table. Concord Key Club Article: First Baptist Church by Keane Escueta, Club Editor For the First Baptist Church event, volunteers helped with their daycare. They handled check-ins and helped with lunch. Throughout the day, volunteers acted as “yard duties” of sorts, making sure kids were playing safe, while also befriending them! By the end of the event, kids definitely seemed happy that we had come to help that day!

Division 26 North Official Newsletter Key Club season is right around the corner. Even though events have been scarce, the Bay Area Japanese Lantern Ceremony, was held in Berkeley. Handmade lantern bags were set down

into the water, and was especially beautiful in the night. Our officers are very excited to see what is in store for us. The first day of College Park’s walkthrough is over, and we managed to get many freshmen to sign up, as well as returning seniors. The otter pops for sale were fairly POP-ular as well! We have so

many great things planned for the year, and we are all thrilled for the things to come! — Brian Choe, College Park Editor

Division 26 North | Deer Valley Key Club Deer Valley Key Club Article: Barnes & Noble’s Harry Potter Midnight Release by Darienne Viloria, Club Editor On Saturday, July 30th, Antioch’s very own Barnes & Noble hosted a late-night event for all Potterheads to partake in, in order to celebrate the midnight release of the highly-anticipated eighth Harry Potter book! Once I found out it was a Harry Potter event, I excitedly jumped at the opportunity to volunteer. The turnout for the event was truly amazing—one of the store associates even said they had never seen the store so busy! It was at once inspiring and satisfying, to observe the animated atmosphere of the store and all the camaraderie within it. Upon arriving at the store, Orianna and I noted with awe how long the raffle and Sorting line was. Patrons of the event were to be Sorted into one of the four Hogwarts houses (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin), and then sent to the corresponding section of the store. Each house had its own table and assortment of activities, such as face painting, word searches, fill-in-theblanks, and wand making. President Orianna, vice president Darwin, and I first monitored the Hufflepuff table, then the Ravenclaw table! Around 11 PM there was a costume contest, which I helped to judge, followed by a raffle of Harry Potter-themed items. The three of us had a blast working this event, conversing with our patrons and friends, and participating in the activities. If only new Harry Potter books could be released more often!

Division 26 North | Mount Diablo Key Club Mount Diablo Key Club: Taste of Concord By: Adriene Castillo, Club Editor The Taste of Concord is an event held in Todos Santos once a year, where everyone can come sample various foods from nearby restaurants. It was a very successful event, to the point that the event was sold out even before the event. For this event we had three officers and one member come to attend and help out with the event. One of our club members Max Delgado said, “I got to sample so much food today and I can’t wait until the next Taste of Concord so I can bring my family. We were also joined by members from Concord High School and it was a really fun bonding event for us. Mount Diablo Key Club: 4th of July Parade By: Adriene Castillo, Club Editor The 4th of July Parade took place on Mount Diablo High School’s campus. Some of our members brought their families to enjoy the 4th of July Parade, which made it special for our club because we celebrated a very important date in history with our members from our home club. Jose Padilla, one of the members that attended said he would never forget spending time with his family and most importantly his fellow Key Club friends.

Division 26 North | Northgate Key Club Northgate Key Club Update By Yeseul Park Last month, our Key Club went to the DCM. Unfortunately, not a lot of people made it to the Regional Olympic and the August DCM. Key Club members from different divisions came to one place. At first, it was very awkward between the clubs and the divisions. However, as the time past, slowly people became more involved with the activities. and more involved in learning about each other. This month, the officers are going to plan the school's Walk Thru, and we are going to have a fundraiser at a Chinese restaurant Downtown Walnut Creek. The date hasn't  been confirmed yet, but will most likely be in August.
