AUTUMN NOTES OF KINDNESS article by: Jocelyn Mendoza, Pittsburg

On October 5, 2020, from 3:30 to 4:00 PM, Pittsburg Key Club hosted an Autumn Notes of Kindness event. As Autumn is approaching, we decided to make the event fall-themed and went all out with pumpkin, leaves, and turkey cutouts! We first drew on the selected papers and then colored them to our liking. We then flipped the note and wrote a positive affirmation on the other side to share our gratitudes and thanks. We had over fifteen participants who were there and ready to contribute to our community since we will be passing these notes out to our local neighborhoods, communities, and households! Everyone seemed to be artistic as the final products came out splendid. Some puns were even said on the notes such as “I have fillings 4 you”, “thinking of you in cornteen”, and “nuts about you”! This event was particularly relevant as Thanksgiving rears and this time of the year is the most special, for it is the time of giving back and enjoying others' company. This time of the year can get difficult for many people as quarantine has postponed the one time of the year where families can be reunited as bylaws and protocol, in addition to safety, hinders us from seeing each other face to face. This event allows us to get into the spirit of the holidays, as we attempt to engage our members in a festive mood. This is essentially what the holidays are all about: giving back to our community.

OCTOBER A/V'S│13│ On September 5th, from 3:30-4:30pm, Freedom Key Club members immersed themselves within an artistic session of article by: Kevin Nguyen, Freedom learning how to craft origami cranes! Within this event, the cranes were created to give to kids at the local Almond Grove Elementary school! This event was also an opportunity for members to bond with each other through Zoom! Each crane that was made signified a step towards easing the effects of distance learning for the students. Our exclusive club President, Kayla Nguyen demonstrates her passion within the project when she states, “It was fun and simple! It was a great way to pass time... I hope the kids who received my cranes experience a sense of joy!” As seen through her own words, Kayla marks this event as an event to pull people away from the the blank blankthoughts thoughtsformed formed during quarantine! One amazing club Treasurer, Mia Phounrath, mentioned the experience as “challenging” since it was her first time constructing cranes out of paper! However, after a bit of practice, the “challenge” aspect was replaced with “joy” since she could imagine the smiles that would be made from each and every crane that she made! Mia is jubilated to visualize the expressions that would be seen on the students when they attain the cranes and is more than willing to participate in a similar meaningful service event again!

On September 26th, our Division had a DWS where we made paper cranes over Zoom! These cranes were dropped off to local hospitals where they were given to hospitalized kids in spirit of the upcoming PTP Week (October 12th-16th). Not only do they provide joy to those who receive them, but they also give hope as "an ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. Some stories believe you are granted happiness and eternal good luck, instead of just one wish, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury."
