s ' h a r a S r a o R Aloha, Grizzlies! Summer vacation is finally upon us - has anyone visited Hawaii and run into some friends from DCON? I sure wish I could. Make sure you use this summer to your full advantage - relax, spend time with family, and get some rest into those tired bones of yours, but don't forget to use all this extra time you have to give back to the community as well! I'll be sending out service opportunities to club officers all summer, so talk to them about what you can sign up for and reunite with your fellow Key Clubbers for a few hours as you work together for the greater good. If there's anything in particular you'd like to see on the Division level this summer, let me know so the Division Leadership Team and I can put in some work and see if we can bring your summer Key Club dreams to life! Of course, make sure you drink a lot of water and stay cool in these blazing summer temperatures. See you soon, Grizzlies, and have a BEARy GRReat summer! Grizzly hugs and lots of love,

Sarah Ahmed

Spotlight: Summer Service

Hey, Grizzlies! Summer- time, for the most part, is a break from all things stressful and a time to be around frineds! Why not do both while also helping your community and making a difference? Communty service and the need for volunteers never ceases - even during this time of the year! Volunteering not only benefits the organization, it also allows an outlet for you and your friends to see each other over the break. Key Club Officers at your schools should be scouting out different service event opportunities, so don't hesitate to ask them if there are any upcoming ones. Also, Sarah, our very lovely LTG, has posted various community service opportunites on the D27N Grizzlies Facebook Page, so don't forget to keep check for events there as well! If none of the provided service events are your style, then you can always make one by using some of the ideas on the next page! Get creative, but also remember to have supervision and permission! Enjoy!

Some of the parks in Stockton and Lodi are in need of volunteers willing to help clean up all of the litter left behind by park goers. By cleaning the park environment, people of all ages can enjoy the true beauty of the park. To perform this service event, simply talk to your club president and discuss which parks are in dire need of cleaning. This does not require too much planning, so get on out there and clean our parks!

Go out and make your city looking as fresh and bright as ever! Often times, the city can always use helpful hands assist in beautifying nearby areas. Officers can contact their city hall and inquire about service events that deal with keeping the city beautiful. Design a city mural, re-paint buildings, plant a city garden. Ideas for city beautification are endless. BEE creative and even reach out to Sarah if this interests you!

HERSHEY'S, a Key Club International Co-Sponsor, organizes Track and Field Games for children ages 7-12, which encourages them to be active and learn to love exercise while also having fun! Although this service event is more challenging to set up, it is definitely worth while. This program provides quality recreation where children are introduced to physical fitness. For more information, check out hersheystrackandfield.com.

My Key Club Story Sarah Ahmed | MCHS

My Key Club journey has been three years so far of incredible opportunities, friendships, and memories. Starting out as a freshman, I was eager to join every club I could so I could quickly find my niche while getting to know the rest of the school in the process. Here’s what I knew: Key Club is good for college apps, it’s the biggest club at Middle College, and everyone seems to love it. My first year in Key Club, I was a little lost, but I tried to make the best of it and be as dedicated as I could be. I suggested service events, attended everything I could, and was the only freshman to attend District Convention. I found myself being invested in Key Club for the organization itself – for its focuses and accomplishments – instead of attending events only if I knew my friends would be there. I began to come out of my shell and relieve some of the social awkwardness that I didn’t know how to deal with in middle school. During elections for the upcoming year, I went for club secretary but lost. Never one to be discouraged, I understood that I perhaps wasn’t ready to hold a posi tion and didn’t let it damp en my passion for Key Club.

The 2013-2014 Lieutenant Governor was inspiring, capable, and a shining star within Key Club and my home school. I hoped that I would someday fill her shoes. Sophomore year came around, and I found myself better grasping every level of Key Club. I attended my first Region Training Conference and briefly wondered if I would ever be one of the presenters, but quickly shied away from the thought. Only later would I sincerely consider this as a legitimate possibility. Sophomore year, being the busiest year at my high school, passed by quickly despite too many late nights and morning coffees (which may or Sarah Ahmed may not have caused me to develop a major coffee problem). As I found myself facing junior year, I recognized a desire and a matured ability to give back to Key Club. Again, I went for secretary, and again, I lost – and I found it discouraging this time. The Division Leadership Team was an option, but an intimidating one… could I really make it on? I applied for Executive Assistant and was rejected, but Lieutenant Governor Karen encouraged me to go for Member Recognition Task Coordinator when it opened and I had to keep my spirits up to try for one last position.

I found myself being invested in Key Club for the organization itself...

10

The 2014-2015 Lieutenant Governor was relatable, supportive, and a great mentor when it came to any advice I ever asked for. I hoped that I would someday fill his shoes. The summer before junior year, I applied for Member Recognition Task Coordinator. The application was done, the interview was done, and I was left waiting for results that just couldn’t come out fast enough. One evening, I was cruising through social media when I got a notification from Facebook Messenger – I Was added to the 2015-2016 Division Leadership Team chat! Ecstatic and praying it wasn’t a mistake, I talked on the chat for hours with the other DLT members and began my third year in Key Club on cloud 9. As a part of the Division Leadership Team, my junior year experience was different from anything I’d had before. I felt more involved, more confident, and more open; people knew me, they knew

my job, and I was able to give back to my Grizzly Ohana. As I watched Karen lead the division, helped her plan events as part of the DLT, and contributed to the division as I never had before – presenting workshops, speaking at every DCM, helping set up and run events – I felt my love for Key Club growing beyond what I thought was possible and felt changed for the better with every little task I did. The 2015-2016 Lieutenant Governor encouraged, guided, and influenced me to become a leader, all while dealing with her own busy life. I hoped that I would someday fill her shoes. In the last couple months of 2015, candidates for the position of Lieutenant Governor were preparing for Conclave. Because no campaigning is allowed, nobody could know that I was running for the position – making it all the more intimidating and isolating. After nights of stress, worry, and “Is it even hitting me that this can actually happen?” versus “Why is it hitting me so hard that this might actually happen?” I found myself wishing Conclave was much farther away or happening already or over. The waiting was too much! Regardless, the day of Conclave felt like it came all too soon and I was terrified of the decision that would determine my last year in Key Club.

11

The 2016-2017 Lieutenant Governor is... me! You can’t imagine the overwhelming feelings of gratitude, relief, astonishment, pure happiness, and apprehension that I felt in the moment I was elected Lieutenant Governor. After teary phone calls to my parents and sister, I returned to the room in which Conclave was held to help with the Division 27 North January DCM. Everything would go back to normal for the time being – or would it? Celebrating my election that night, I was introduced to the raw life of a Lieutenant Governor and couldn’t wait for the year to come.

L-O-V-E WE LOVE OUR L-T-G!!

All of these moments have led up to where I currently am: serving at Lieutenant Governor of Division 27 North. The new relationships, experiences, and connections always remind me why I wanted to give back to Division 27 North and Key Club itself. As a ProsperiBEE, Mama Bear, leader, member, friend… as every role I am lucky enough to hold within Key Club, I hope to make the biggest impact I can and to leave a legacy I can be proud of. I know it’ll be hard – from trying to think of good, worthwhile events, to increasing member participation and retention, to coming up with ways for us to reach our service and fundraising goals, all while doing everything seniors do in the way of colleges and planning for the future – but I also know that I have the support and determination I need to get through everything. .

Let me leave you with this, Grizzlies: no matter how many times you feel like you’ve failed and should just give up, please never do. No matter how much something scares you, if you want to go for it, please do. No matter how alone you feel, know that I’m always a message away. No matter how tired, burnt out, or lost you feel, know that we’ve all been there and that so many people (myself included!) are here to help you through your tough times. Finally, no matter what you face in life, know that you can and will get through it. I am constantly amazed by each and every one of you, because your accomplishments, passion, and potential are simply overwhelming and BEEyond fantastic. Thank you for everything you’ve given me, and I hope that my efforts to give back to you pay off in every way.

With Grizzly hugs and lots of love,

Sarah Ahmed 2016 - 2017 Division 27 North Lieutenant Governor

Officer Training Con Division 27 North and South teamed up to host the 2016 Officer Training Conference at San Joaquin Delta College, where members and newly elected officers were reminded of "the magic of service!" Throughout the day, key clubbers attended three workshops out of many that were presented. Ranging from information on PTP and MNT to the art of How to Not BEE Awkward, members had a wide variety of interesting workshops to choose from. Each presentation provided an abundance of information that I'm sure many of the atendees will utilize throughout their lives.

EVENT RECAPS

Always BREADY for Service May 20, 2016 Kassandra Erickson | Tokay During Bread of Life, we worked by giving food to the needy. We start by unloading the food and sorting it onto different tables. After that, we start putting everything into bags. There is always different types of food, it is never the same. We are told what to put in each bag, usually a variety of things. The volunteers even bag fruit or potatoes some months. After everything is bagged, people start loading them unto shopping carts. One of each type of bag is put in there, one after the other. While some people do that, others are driving the shopping carts. They go around the line collecting the bags, and then give the food to the people who need it, usually helping unload it into their cars. This month, clothes were also given away. Since there was so many people, it was held in the parking lot of Kmart as opposed to the Ebenezer Church. It was a great experience.

Swimming with Service May 28/29, 2016 Shee Vang | SECA On May 28th and 29th, SECA Key Clubbers volunteered at Tiger Aquatics in Delta College. Volunteers were primarily at the food court, monitoring and selling food. Their alternative tasks were to be runners, who passed out food to coaches and timers. Andy Jin reflected, “I volunteered on May 29th from 7 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon. When I first got there I helped with the preparation of the swimming competition. Then I went back to the food booth to take orders from the people. The people in charge were really friendly and I was able to take a break.” It was a hot day, however, volunteers got the advantage of staying under a tent. “It was not a very stressful volunteer event as the oher volunteers and I were preparing food to sell. We also got to enjoy watching swimmers compete.”

Relay for Life June 4, 2016 Marciano Lua | McNair Relay for life was something not everyone gets the chance to experience. So many people bonded together by the loss of someone that they held dear was truly heart breaking. The part that was truly inspirational was how strong everyone was to go out there and support cancer awareness by walking so many laps out in that heat. While I was working my shift at the registration, there was this little middle school aged little girl. She came up and asked, "If I'm a survivor where do we get our shirt?" I pointed her in the right direction and looked at her form and realized she had brain cancer. When I saw that my heart had dropped, but then lifted again because the next time I saw her, she was laughing it up with other survivors. It was then that I knew everyone there wasn't afraid, but encouraged! They didn't let something like cancer kick their butts, rather decided to fight. And that is what something like this event can show people and what has definitely showed me.
