Words from the LTG Happy New Year, Phoenixes! Can you believe that another year has flown by? It seems like just yesterday we were saying goodbye to 2011 and saying hello to 2012. Well, I hope you all are enjoying your winter break since we are returning to school in a few days. Hopefully those of you who have homework got that done as well! So with a new year ahead of us, what resolutions have you made? Any resolutions for yourself personally or even for Key Club? I'd love to hear it some time! A resolution I've made for Key Club is to definitely end this 2012-2013 term off with a bang! With that said, here are some updates with Key Club. We have entered the time of the year where you all begin applying for contests and awards. There are a multitude of awards at the division, district, and International level that I encourage everyone to apply for! Division awards are due in January, as you look to the calendar, and most of the district awards are due on February 2nd. You all have done a tremendous job this year, and I believe each and every one of you and your clubs deserve recognition for all your hard work you've put into Key Club and the community, so take the time to apply! If you need help with any of it, please let me know! I'd gladly help in any way. We also have District Convention coming up in March, but keep in mind that the deadlines are in February for that! So those of you contemplating on going, come on out and ride "A Million Waves of Service" with everyone because we all have a million reasons to serve and the service we do create a great ripple effect in our community. Come on out and learn more about Key Club, receive awards and recognition, elect your next District Executives, and celebrate the end of another wonderful Key Club year. I hope you all enjoyed your holiday break, and I hope to see some of you at the next DCM on January 8th! Keep the fiery flames going, phoenixes, even in the winter time!

Scorching with service and spirit,

Ailina Heng Lieutenant Governor

PB&J Angelene Diego, Legacy

After our meeting on the 13th, we scheduled a PB&J Day for our club. We've had a couple of these days last term and we decided to bring it back again this year. Basically we make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and usually donate them to The Shade Tree. We got a great deal on peanut butter and jelly and we also got a generous donation of ten loaves of bread from one of our members. Our culinary teacher was more than happy with us using her room and utensils for the day. After disinfecting the tables, we got to work! After a few laughs with members and our advisor we made over one hundred sandwiches. It was enough to fill two printer paper boxes! On my way to Shade Tree I got lost a couple times. Finally when I saw the building I was surprised because I've passed it a couple times and never realized it was a shelter for abused children and women. It was great timing because a school bus just dropped a handful of kids at the shelter and they waved at me and said hello. It just made me happy that we did this service opportunity.

Articles Concession Stand Rosalyn Ngo, Rancho

After a long, tiring day of school, Silvia Lee, Jose Bettencourt, Crystal Wu, my wonderful advisors, and I all got together after school to work at the Concessions Stand. From 3-8PM, we got to serve many basketball players, families, and administration from our home and opposing school. To start off with, I would not mind whether I was volunteering indoor or outdoors, but I was truly thankful for the great opportunity. I had a fun time working hard with my fellow members. It was exciting when a big wave of people would suddenly appear and crowd the food stand, yet that made volunteering more exciting! Additionally, I got to spend quality time with each individual and got closer to them. I absolutely love spending time with Key Clubbers. I mean, who wouldn't?! I'm looking forward to volunteer at more events like this sometime. :)

Santa Run Chris Nowlin, Advanced Technologies Academy

On December 1, 2012, I volunteered at Town Square for the Santa Run. The Santa Run is an event held by the Opportunity Village of Las Vegas that raises money for people with disabilities in our community, while having fun running the 1K race or 5K race. While volunteering during the Santa Run, my school and I went into the volunteer, got volunteer shirts, and went onto the scene. Later, we were passing out water to the runners who were super exhausted from running a long time. A-Tech was cheering the runners on because it was awesome seeing them run for a great cause. After the race and the runners clearing out of Town Square, I had to clean up. I took tents down and pick up trash around half of town square, which is huge. From this event, I gained the opportunity to help people who are less fortunate than me, giving me a great feeling in my heart. Knowing that the people who benefit from this will be truly grateful for this event makes me feel like I am actually making a difference in society. That is what Key Clubbers do! We do community service with spirit, while having a blast doing it.

The Member of the Month Victor Payumo Victor has been persistent on coming to all our meetings, including board and general meetings. He enjoys showing off that Key Club fire that he is known for. He is aspiring to run for a leadership position for the club and is working hard at learning the tricks of the trade ahead of time so that he can serve as efficiently as possible if elected. Not only that, but he loves helping out in the community and in the club and does whatever he can to lend a helping hand. Because of his great dedication, I would like to nominate him for recognition for going above and BEEyond!

Club Snapshots Arbor View November was such a long month, but at the same time we cannot believe December is right here all of the sudden! We started this month with another face painting at a home varsity football game, painting spirit on everyone's faces (literally!). It was our last varsity home game of the year, which is sad because no more face painting, but on the other hand, no matter how fun, it was getting cold at those games! Some of our members face painted the night before Fall Rally, went home to sleep for a few hours, before waking up to head to the buses. We love our dedicated members! Fall Rally was amazing overall. We asked our members that went to Fall Rally to share what their favorite part was at the next meeting. More than a few said that by the end of the day they were being asked by random park-goers, who were not Key Club related, how they felt. They loved how the Key Club spirit affected everyone there, Key Club or not! Our other main service event this November was our annual month long food drive. From the 1st until the 21st, we set up boxes in every classroom for students to bring in canned food. We ended up collecting over 4,000 cans! On the 21st, our entire club and kids from several different clubs at school stayed after, prolonging their beginning of Thanksgiving break, to help us load the boxes on the truck to be sent to Salvation Army. They were amazing and we are so appreciative! Those were are main events from November that the Arbor View Key Club is proud to share! We are so thankful for our entire Key Club family!

Cheyenne This month was a busy month for all of us. In the beginning of the month we all planned for Fall Rally South as we celebrated our Key Club Week. On Monday was Show Your K in Every Way and we had our members go the whole day wearing a sign that said, “Ask me how I feel! On Wednesday we had our VP and President go to a dinner with NLV Kiwanis for Connect the K's day. On Thursday we had Bring a Friend to Key Club day where we had a friendly game of flag football. Lastly, on Friday we had do it Your Way which we celebrated by wearing our Key Club shirts to school. At Fall Rally we all had lots of fun cheering loud and riding rides! Also, on the sixteenth of this month a group of our members went out to Saville Middle School to help out with a CCSD School Police Safety fair. At the fair they helped serve Thanksgiving style meals and help set up for the community fair. Last but certainly not least, we had a club picnic at the Aliante Park. We all gathered together at the park for some games, food, and fun!
