SAN MARCOS HOLIDAY PARADE

In December 2019, San Marcos Key Club attended the San Marcos Holiday Parade. This volunteer event was hosted by the members of Lake San Marcos Kiwanis club. Many members from both San Marcos Key Club and Mission Hill Key Club came out to show their passion for service and strengthen the connection with their sponsor, the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis club. They helped decorate the Kiwanis parade float and trailer with a Christmas themed design and a large Kiwanis banner. The volunteers also sorted through hundreds of children’s books and ensured that the appropriate Kiwanis sticker label was on each book. Later, the volunteers walked along the parade route alongside the Kiwanis parade float, handing out books to the children on the street. The San Marcos Holiday Parade was a great opportunity for San Marcos Key Clubbers to collaborate with both the Mission Hills club and the Kiwanis club, for a truly local community event. Members note that the day was “filled with joy seeing all of the children receive donated books”. This outreach program is a part of the Kiwanis club’s focus on enriching the educational opportunities of young children. We hope the children enjoy their books and look forward to working with Kiwanis in the future. - Krista Nguyen San Marcos President MEMBERS FROM BOTH SAN MARCOS AND MISSION HILLS HELPING OUT WITH BOOK DISTRIBUTION AND ORGANIZATION

ROSE BOWL PARADE 13

As one of the big service events of every year, Rose Float is by far, one of the most exciting events to attend to. Rose Float decorating is offered every year for Key Clubbers to have the opportunity to not only bond with each other, but make a greater impact on the community. This event consists of flowers, more flowers, and well ⏤ flowers galore! By the name Rose Float, Key Club has the opportunity to help our fellow Kiwanians decorate floats for the one and only Rose Bowl Parade. The parade itself comes a long way, starting in 1890, celebrating the holiday tournament. Knowing this, it is a huge, huge honor to volunteer in decorating these beautiful floats for the popular page, it’s a wonderful feeling to watch the parade with the satisfaction and the pride that this is something we did, something we contributed to. Perhaps a decent 'humblebrag' to add to our resumés. Members would sort out leaves from the flowers and put them on small bed patches to hold the flowers in place for the floats. This would be done in the span of 8 hours at most. In the end, it was a team effort with both the Kiwanis and Key Club to put together the flower-covered floats for the huge event. - Jennifer Manimtim Del Lago Historian

WORKING WITH D37E

WHEN DID YOU WORK WITH D37E?

There has been a lot events since our divisions are so close. We typically do joint DCMs — such as the April, July, August, November, and January DCM. However, we have also done a OTC, RTC, and CTC in conjunction with Jellies.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH D37E?

Due to our history of joint events, most of the two divisions know each other fairly well. Everyone is cooperative and we don’t really run into any problems. Jane and I don’t struggle to get the two divisions to interact or work together — it’s primarily smooth sailing! And of course, Jane is amazing and kills being Lt. Governor.

HOW HAS WORKING AMONG DIFFERING DIVISIONS IMPROVE YOUR KEY CLUB EXPERIENCE?

I feel like I’ve met a lot of different people, some to which I didn’t even like that much, but working with other divisions has taught me how to get along with people who might be very different from me. It’s taught me how to learn in our diverse society! I also wouldn’t have met Jane or any other LTG if I didn’t attend events with different divisions. The entire region is definitely a lot more connected thanks to these joint events.
