Editor’s Note Hey Key Clubbers! August has arrived and school is approaching quicker than ever! While summer is coming to an end, that does not mean your dedication to Key Club should. I hope that over these past couple of months you have retained your duties to serve Key Club whether it is volunteering or sending in articles. It is essential and I encourage you to keep submitting articles and visuals as this newsletter is made for YOU and by YOU! Without you, there wouldn’t be this newsletter! Keep up the great work and enjoy summer while it’s still here! Swimming in service,

Mindy Nguyen Division 42 East 2013-2014 News Editor

A Message from Your LTG Hello, Narwhals! Can you BEElieve it?! Summer 2013 is almost over! I hope each and every one of you had a memorable summer filled with fun, laughter, AND service. With the end of summer approaching, this is a perfect time to start planning for the GOLDEN year that I know each club in the division will have. Think of new, creative ways to recruit members to join your home club! Also think of new, exciting events and service projects that members will enjoy. When planning, keep in mind of the CNH District goals and think of how YOU can contribute to them. As a district, 46,000 members; as divisions, contribute to raise $150,000 for PTP; as clubs, come together to serve 1,000,000 hours of service; and as individual members, save three lives from MNT. There are so many opportunities out there that will allow your club to strive and prosper during this Key Club year, so take advantage of them! This past month, I had the honor to represent Division 42 East & the CNH District at the Key Club International Convention 2013 in Washington D.C. I had tons of fun and learned many new ways on how to better serve Division 42 East. At ICON, a leader and club from our division was recognized and I would like to congratulate Immediate Past D42E Lt. Governor Kristine Rafanan for receiving the Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lt. Governor Award as well as Royal Key Club for being recognized as a Diamond Distinguished Club. As the CNH District would cheer, “WE ARE PROUD OF YOU! YES, WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!” I hope all of you enjoy the last weeks of summer! Have fun, stay safe, and stay GOLDEN! I’ll see all of you soon! Swimming in service,

Paolo Recto Division 42 East 2013-2014 Lieutenant Governor

Vice president

Newbury Park

Andrea Liu

Hello! My name is Andrea Liu and I am the vice president of Newbury Park's Key Club. I am very excited to be serving in this 2013-2014 term and I hope to collaborate with both the board and our members to make it a great one. My goals are to encourage more active participation, improve our board dynamic, and help find more opportunities for the club to get involved in. I want for our Key Clubbers to feel welcome and enthusiastic to volunteer. I will be an incoming senior and although I only discovered Key Club at the beginning of my junior year, I have quickly grown attached and could not imagine a high school experience without it. My hobbies include getting involved, swimming, and going on walks. I look forward to assisting the president and everyone else in Key Club to fulfill our tasks!

Laura Cruz-Albrecht Oak Park Hello Key Clubbers, and, more specifically, narwhals! I’m Laura Cruz-Albrecht and after three years as a Key Club member, one of them as treasurer, I am looking forward to serving as co-president for Oak Park’s Key Club. This year I really want to make more service projects and fundraising opportunities available to my club members and aspire to turn our club into a larger as well as a more active, motivated, and spirited group. I also hope to have more members attend District Convention this year. Apart from Key Club, I also enjoy helping build a solar powered boat for Solar Cup, working with kids at the elementary school AM/PM, knitting, anything Harry Potter related, and biking.

Oak Park

Sunny Tsai

Hello, I'm Sunny Tsai, and I'm going to be a senior. I hope that throughout this year, we, as a club, will be able to recruit even more people, keeping each person enthusiastic about Key Club, and allow this organization to strongly influence and impact each members' life. I aim to bring the Oak Park Key Club together into a family as well as with the other clubs of our district. In my free time, I love to bake cupcakes and stargaze. Music is a large part of my life, and I currently play and am trying to learn the piano, drums, and guitar. I also love to eat a lot of bread and cake. I look forward to a great and exciting year!

Zurriat Haider

Royal Hi everyone! I’m Zurriat just call me “Z” for short and I am the vice president of Royal High School along with my buddy Tri Nguyen. I shared the duties of the vice president with my buddy Tri, in case if I’m absent, he’ll be present. I’m looking forward to a wonderful year and working with everyone. Also, I wish to accomplish more than just the duties of the vice president and helping everyone out whenever needed. I love sleeping, eating, and helping those that need help.

biographies Michelle Hosogai

Santa Susana

Hello Key Clubbers! My name is Michelle Hosogai and I am the Key Club vice president for Santa Susana. Previously, I was the treasurer for our school club, so this is my second year working with Key Club board members. I started joining Key Club in my sophomore year and grew to like it very much after experiencing my first Fall Rally. Currently, my workload as an officer is very minimal, therefore this upcoming school year I would like to take this chance and help my other board members as much as possible, and prevent them from having to overwork them selves. Every year, we start out with a large numbers of Key Clubbers, however this number seems to always decrease as the year progresses. So one of my goals for the upcoming year is to find a way to make the club more entertaining and maintain a certain number of members through out the entire year.. So besides Key Club, what is there to know about me? I am 16 years old, and a mix of Japanese and Chinese. I am into anything that is related to the visual arts, so activities such as drawing or painting appeal to me greatly. During my free time, I like to play the piano, and work out at the gym. I have a sweet tooth, so I have difficulty resisting anything with chocolate.

Simi Valley

Donna Rahgoshay

Hello everyone! My name is Donna Rahgoshay and I am one of the two vice presidents of Simi Valley’s Key Club. I am also one of the three division spirit coordinators. Some of my goals as vice president are to help my president increase membership, but also make it seem fun and interesting. I like to consider myself a creative person, so I would be able to come up with a few ideas to increase membership. I enjoy playing sports, riding roller coasters (mainly at Six Flags), eating various foods, and listening to and making music. I hope that I can help our division grow by assisting my president this year.

Nathalie Vazquez

Simi Valley

Hello! My name is Nathalie Vazquez and I am one of the two vice presidents of Simi Valley’s Key Club. My goals for this year is to gain more members and have our members volunteer more. My hobbies include photography and sewing. I look forward to helping make this a successful key club year for our division!

ICON

Amanda Redublo | CNH District Secretary From June 29th until July 7th, Lt. Governor Paolo and I had the honor of attending 2013 International Convention in our BEEautiful state capital, Washington DC. As soon as we arrived in Washington DC on June 29th, it was none stop touring across the small, but historical city. There was so much history and places that we had the chance to see. We saw White House Lincoln’s Memorial (we even went inside the theater where he was shot and the room where he died!) Mount Vernon (President Washington’s home and his place of death), Capitol Building, and so many museums (such as the Neweum, Spy Museum, and the list is endless!). On the third day, all the CNH attendees had the chance to serve and volunteer for Kids Against Hunger. We packed over 80 boxes of food that feeds over 1,000,000 kids in third world countries! It was a tiring, yet life changing experience! During the 4th of July, I personally was not able to go out to the metro and see the fireworks but I had the advantage of seeing all the fireworks from my hotel room. From then on, ICON itself took place. I attended many workshops that can help me serve as District Secretary, but more importantly, a member. While we were there, we had the chance to hear, meet, and elect the International Board. BEE sure to wish all the newly elected President, Vice Presidents, International Trustees the best throughout their term! President Raeford Penny, Vice President Rachel Benoit, Trustees Alberto Berrizbeitia, Roshni Chandwani, Renisha Daley, Avery Hitchcock, Kelsie Hoppes, Madison Kemker, Casey O’Neill, Maria Palazzolo, Michelle Petersen, Zachary Waldorf, and Eric Yoon. Another congratulations to everyone from our own division that received an award at international level! Next year, let’s aim for everyone to earn an award at international level! Thank you once again for allowing Lt. Governor Paolo and I represent all you Narwhals while we were in Washington DC! If you weren’t able to make it to ICON this year, don’t worry! 2014 International Convention will be held in our very own district in Anaheim, California! We hope to see you there!

2013

Paolo Recto | Division 42 East Lieutenant Governor During the first week of July, I, along with over 90 other CNH Key Clubbers, had the privilege to travel across the country to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., to attend the 70th Annual Key Club International Convention. While we were there, we participated in the CNH District Tour and explored the sights of Washington D.C. such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol Building, the World War II Memorial and so much more. We also got to visit various museums such as the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, International Spy Museum and the Newsuem (News Museum) where I frolicked around enjoying the various types of social news media! (Yes, I am a big fan of journalism) After 4 days of touring, convention finally started where I met many Key Clubbers from all over the world. It was such a great experience meeting others who also shared the same passion as me, SERVICE. During the convention, CNH pumped the spirit up with a spirit battle against the Crabtastic Capital District and of course, CNH dominated! I attended many informational workshops and participated in the House of Delegates where we elected the 2013-2014 International Board. ICON 2013 was a one in a lifetime experience as I got to be in a whole different city with my Ohana. I hope to see YOU and next year’s International Convention as it will be taking place in Anaheim, CA, where the 2013-2014 Key Club year all began!

k r a P y r u b w e N Poker Ride and Blackjack Run CELESTINE SUN This event took place on June 29th and included a bike ride or walk/run. All the proceeds went to the Conejo Valley Kiwanis Foundation to help support and fund the organization. Although the event was not as big as they hoped, the organizers have already started coming up with ideas for next year, so it’s definitely something that everyone should be aware of in the upcoming years. Overall, it was still a great experience and I look forward to volunteering again next year.

June Officer Training Conference

LAUREN HELLER The June OTC was fantastic because I got to meet people from both Division 42E and Division 42W. The workshops were extremely helpful in giving me ideas about how to improve the efficiency and excitement of my club for next year, and the icebreakers were a great way to spice it up! Overall, I’m excited to implement everything I’ve learned in the upcoming months! ANDREA LIU This June I attended the Key Club Officer Training Conference as a representative of Newbury Park and I found it to be a great, educational experience to help inform the officers of their duties and provide ideas on how to go about it. Right off the bat I was appreciative of the very friendly atmosphere—the ice breaker was a nice way to familiarize everyone. More importantly, though, the speeches and workshops that were presented to us were motivational and useful. I feel that I am more prepared to enter the new term as a vice president and I was given many ideas on how to make meetings more exciting, retain members, and encourage participation. Overall, it was a great success and I’m very proud of everyone who made it happen! Andrea Liu and Diana Tai take notes during an OTC lecture.

DIANA TAI The OTC in June was an awesome experience for me. I met many members of Key Clubs from other schools. Everyone was so spirited and enthusiastic! I got so many new ideas from just talking to them. Through the detailed workshops, I learned how to increase membership, run smooth meetings, and become a better leader. I especially enjoyed playing icebreaker games. Our guest speaker has inspired me to have the goal of becoming even more involved by telling us about Circle K. Overall, OTC has made me super excited about Key Club this upcoming 2013-14 school year!

Library Summer Reading Program Lauren Heller working at the Kids Table at Newbury Park Library.

8

LAUREN HELLER I have enjoyed my time helping with the Newbury Park Library’s “Dig into Reading” summer reading program. While there, I can motivate kids of all ages to read, even though it is not as popular of an activity in comparison to using electronics. I also love helping them with crafts, guessing games, and other activities. Overall, I’ve learned how to communicate better with kids and am excited for the remainder of my summer shifts.

Red Oak Summer Camp

Oak Park

LAURA CRUZ-ALBRECHT To continue serving my community during the summertime, I volunteer at the Red Oak Summer Camp. Volunteering at the summer camp is a funfilled experience and I relish being able to offer my aid in something I’m good at. As a volunteer, I assist the counselors in supervising the children. I talk as well as play with the campers, and additionally aid in setting up and guiding the children through various crafts, and whenever the director needs an odd job done, I’m there to help with that as well. A typical day usually includes going to the nearby park or the on-site playing structure. There, I engage with the campers in various small activities, ranging from hula-hooping with them, to playing mini-tennis, to swinging with them, to just interacting with them through talking, which many of the kids enjoy doing. In larger group activities, such as kickball, I help keep the game organized and ensure the children are playing appropriately as well as getting a chance to join in. Often the campers go in the recreation room, and here I also watch over the kids as well as play with them. Frequently I draw with them or play board games or card games of their choosing. Today, for example, I played with a group of children an intense game of Gumpsh. When it comes to arts and crafts, I offer my help on two fronts: one is setting up the craft, and the other involves helping the children with it when needed. The crafts vary, and thus so do the tasks related to creating them. Sometimes I trace and cut out figurines. Other times I create a sample craft to serve as an example for the campers. During craft time I help out at different stations, offering encouragement, compliments, and assistance where needed. And, of course, I help with cleaning up – washing brushes, wiping down tables. As a volunteer, I work hard to help in any way I can to make sure the children are having a good time. The children are very diverse in age and personality, and it is always a great moment when I can connect with them somehow, finding a game or topic we both enjoy, or just realizing that they enjoy my presence and I theirs.

Sunrise Assisted Living Center CARLO CRUZ-ALBRECHT Last Saturday, July 13th, I volunteered at the Sunrise ® Assisted Living Center. Sunrise is a wonderful home of kind elderly who have been through history. I have been going there with my older sister for quite a while to spend time with the residents, share experiences, and make friends. On Saturday, I walked the house dog, a golden retriever, Tootsie, and played Scrabble with my sister and two other residents, Maureen and Ruth. The intellectual power the residents have is remarkable. We played an intense game of coming up with words and creatively squeezing them on the board. We had such a good time together with friendly competition. By visiting the residents, who may have limited freedom, we made ourselves and them very happy. Ruth won the game with 124 points and I came in second place! It is so nice to visit the elderly and rewarding to go often because our friends remember us and look forward to our coming. When we show up, we have such great times doing activities together such as baking, socials, and just chatting. Socials are group activities at 3:00 such as trivia, jeopardy, hang-man, and card-games. Snacks are served, often from the baking at 2:00, and the air is festive and inclusive. A few weeks ago we decorated the upstairs with flags, streamers, stars, chains, and other colorful splashes for International Day on the 27th. International Day is a huge annual event sort of like a carnival. When we volunteer at Sunrise, the residents learn from us and share great memories but we also learn from them. They have been through so much history and trial-and-error. They can give this back to us and we can learn from their experiences. Volunteering at Sunrise is a very rewarding experience. Not only do you have so much fun doing games, activities, and socials with the residents, you make the residents happy and bring joy in their lives. It is something to look forward to; a pair of teenagers to bring back your childhood. By making others happy you bring happiness to yourself.

Officer Training Conference

Keila Kim, Chelsea Corbin, Giuliana Petrocelli, and Zurriat Haider at OTC.

CHELSEA CORBIN The Officer Training Conference was so much fun and really helpful! OTC brought together all the board members of 42 East and West together for a day of bonding and helpful workshops. There was a workshop for each club officer, along with Key Club 101, how to get people to join, and spirit and service. All the workshops were very informative and gave us new ideas on how to improve our high schools key club. The conference also had some great bonding games, to get know your fellow members. We all met new people and created a special bond with each other. It was great to see how many people truly care about improving their community and making their key club the best it can be. OTC is an event I definitely won't forget!

ZURRIAT HAIDER On May 10th, Royal had its Spring Fling. Even though it was after school the event was still enjoyable because fellow students from Simi High and Santa Susana attended as well. Royal's Key club sold berry smoothies and Costco pizza, which was one of the top booth to be at. Seeing old friends from other high schools made the event really enjoyable and going to other booths together made the whole experience that much better. Those that volunteered did a job well done and made the event enjoyable. The Key Club booth did a well job, from a narwhal running around (Tri Nguyen) and bringing everyone in to the booth while others sold pizza. Spring Fling was a great event to be at.

Starting an Online Connection GIULIANA PETROCELLI Until this summer, Royal's Key Club was lacking a website. In today's increasingly technology-oriented world, our board made the decision that a beginning a website would benefit our club's communication and increase our availability. In other words, our website lets Key Club become more accessible to our members. On the website's homepage, we have included several paragraphs explaining the basics about Key Club, allowing the tentative new member-to-be to educate themselves a little about our club, and the three organizations that Key Club supports (UNICEF, March of Dimes, and Children's Miracle Network). A picture slide show also displays fun volunteer activities and our members participating in them. One of the most helpful pages on the new website is our calendar. On this page, we will be putting up details about all upcoming volunteering opportunities, so that members who miss a meeting, or are looking for something to participate in last minute, are able to check it and join us! With our forum pages, members can also sign into the website and put their names on a virtual attendance list for our events, as well as discuss Key Club projects, or get any of their questions regarding such events answered. Our picture and video galleries serve to spark up the website, and add excitement. Members will be able to submit photos, and our Club Editor will also be documenting events. For the more inquisitive member, our "news" page will be providing more detailed information about Key Club fundraisers or events, and the organizations that are affiliated with them. Royal High School's Key Club board hopes that this new website will increase the connection between members in the club, and maybe even improve the number of our members, since a more interactive club will help members stay engaged throughout the year. If you are interested in viewing the website, you can check it out at www.royalhighkeyclub.webs.com.

Itty Bitty’s and Pittie’s Rescue BREANNA SCRANTON I have been volunteering at this animal rescue inside of Big Al’s for about 6 months now and I have loved every minute of it. I walk the puppies, fill their water and food dishes, clean their cages, and play with them. This is a truly rewarding experience and a fantastic way to earn service hours while helping innocent puppies receive the proper care and love that they need until they find a perfect home. Helping animals in my passion, so I spend any free time that I have giving attention to the puppies. Itty Bitty’s and Pittie’s rescue is an extraordinary opportunity because it makes me feel that I am truly making a difference in the puppies’ lives.

Samaritan Center MASON THURMOND The Samaritan Center (280 Royal Ave. Simi Valley, 93065) is a day-time drop-in shelter that offers services to homeless clients in Simi Valley to help themselves. Kiwanis runs a program at the Samaritan Center that provides a full and nutritious meal for the homeless and an opportunity for Santa Susana (or even other high schools'!) Key Club members to directly help someone that truly appreciates it. As Samaritan Center Chair, I've come to know the program quite well and I've nothing but good experiences with the Kiwanis and the clients that come in for a nice dinner. It's a humbling, eye-opening and rewarding experience that only requires you to say hello and put food on plates. What I've come to love about helping so much is that it's not particularly difficult but it is a needed service and I can see that I am contributing directly to another person's well-being. I would encourage anyone of any age to give it a try at the least - you may come to love it as much as I do! Key Club members can help out the first Thursday of each month from 4:30 - 6 PM. It is good to have about 4 volunteers, including myself. If you are interested or have any questions please email me at masonjthurmond@gmail.com or samcenterkc@hotmail.com.

S usana a t n a S Kiwanis Garage Sale BREANNA SCRANTON The Kiwanis Garage sale was a terrific experience! Carly, Justine, and I got there at 6am. We set up all of the shoes and clothes for most of the time. We also held signs on the street to promote the garage sale. The Kiwanis members really appreciated our hard work. This garage sale was a great service project to be a part of and I hope that I can go back again next year!

Samaritan Center GINA APINYAVAT On Wednesday, June 26th I had the pleasure to volunteer at the Samaritan Center. I had arrived at 2 PM where I was given instructions to begin sorting clothes. I was told to go through each pile of clothes and group together all the T- shirts, long sleeves, tank tops and etc. Once I finished I began categorizing the sizes and putting them into boxes. The people there were very nice and welcoming and made sorting clothes Entertaining. During this process I was pleased to see so many people stopping by to drop off their clothes and donating it for a good cost. It made me realize that my family and i have a lot of clothes that we don't wear anymore that can be donated. Finally my two hours was up and it was time to leave however I would be glad to come again.

Simi Valley Officer Training Conference JACOB CARBON I had so much fun and exciting experience at the Officer Training Conference I attended! They introduced the goals of key club and their purpose. In addition, they spoke about the other clubs that shared the similar, if not the same goals. The workshops thoroughly informed me about being a leader an the importance of being a part of key club. I learned a lot about friendship, unity, key club, and the members through the many activities we did. Attending the OTC was helpful, informative and friendly. JAMES VILLAMAYOR At OTC I had a very fun experience. At first, the name of the event made it sound boring, but I had so much fun and learned so much. Not only did I learned more about my position in key club next year but I also learned more about key club in general. Now I realized how much of an impact Key Club can make on the world. My favorite part of the whole training was towards the end when we anonymously showed each other our appreciation towards one another. OTC is definitely an event I can't wait to go to next year.
