Editor’s Note

Hello Narwhals! It’s finally easier to wake up early in the morning, isn’t it? Yeah. I feel the same way. School is just getting underway, and this is the perfect chance to get lots of events and member participation! As you are holding your meetings, look around at those faces. Those faces, especially the new ones, are the future of your Key Club. Fall Rally may seem months away (which it kind of is) but it’ll be here before you know it! Let’s put our best efforts out to fundraise for PTP! With enthusiasm at an all-time high, now is the perfect time! Also, this is the month for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF! I’m super excited! Swimming in Service,

Sally Deng

A Message

from your LTG

Hello, Division 42 East! This may not apply to all of you, but for me, balancing school, sleep, and key club has become very difficult for me to manage. With AP, SAT, ACT, IB, and even more acronyms, one often gets overwhelmed just by the thought or sight of these letters. To prepare for the stressful times to come, some tips I would like to share with you is Google Calendar! It helps keep track of events and does a lot to make sure you know what’s ahead of you. You can also download extensions that block social media sites, so you become more productive. I’m not saying to give up having fun, but everything is better in moderation. That is something I have learned. Even too much studying can become too much. Throughout your Key Club journey, I strive to improve myself and I hope all of you too! For an amazing division I serve... OCTOBER 18TH! BE THERE! For those of you go-getters out there who not only want to represent our Key Club core values in volunteering but also in our education and daily lives, please attend Region Training Conference on the 18th of October from 10AM to 5PM. We have great food, talent, guest speakers, and learning materials and workshops. You’ll be inspired to learn and learn to inspire. Join your fellow members across four divisions to attend training. Good luck this month to all of you! Swimming in service,

Joseph Ko

Royal SIMI SENIOR CENTER by Kelley Lam Royal, Moorpark, and Simi High all went to the Simi Valley Senior Center and we helped with their annual Spaghetti Dinner! We served food, cleaned up tables, and set up the tables. We worked on this with Simi Valley Kiwanis! It was a lot of fun serving and getting to meet the people at the Senior Center and it was great to put a smile on their faces!

Simi Valley SPAGETTI DINNER by Gina Apinyavat I couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend my Friday night. On August 29th from 4 PM to 10 PM I volunteered along with my fellow key clubbers at the Spaghetti dinner at the senior center. We started off serving salad to everyone and greeting them. Everyone was so nice and easy to talk to. After the salad was brought out, we started serving the main course. Although there was more than 100 people to feed, the key clubbers and kiwanis united and got the job done. Ending off the wonderful night, cookies were brought out to everyone. We even got a plate for ourselves. I wished I was able to attend the spaghetti dinner all four years however, in the past two years I volunteered there I always had an amazing time that I would never forget.

SPAGETTI DINNER by Mahib Hosain The Senior Dinner hosted by Kiwanis on August 29th was quite an eye-opening experience, as it was an event the likes of which I have never attended. There I had experienced firsthand the true raw power of an organized system and the benefits of working in a team. Serving spaghetti, salad, and drinks may seem like a monotonous task; however, with the combined effort of Kiwanis and Key Club, the experience was quite enjoyable as the senior citizens were incredibly grateful and the volunteers friendly. I was able to connect to the seniors to a deeper level than just serving them due to conversation, which made the overall process of serving food much more enjoyable as positive thoughts embraced both sides of the spectrum. Ultimately, I do not regret my decision to volunteer at the Senior Dinner – it seemed that everyone (including fellow volunteers and myself ) was having a pleasant time and was improving our community as a whole in doing so.

SUNRISE SENIOR LIVING by Sofia Gigliotti On Saturday, August 23rd, Carlo Cruz-Albrecht and I had the opportunity to volunteer at Sunrise Senior Living in Westlake Village. As planned, we did a baking project with some of the residents. After finishing the activity, more and more residents began gathering for a scheduled live performance. However, the expected pianist did not show up on time. Thus, we decided to lead an impromptu singalong. Each resident was given a song lyric book to follow along. We particularly found the lyric guide extremely helpful; we were unfamiliar with most songs, as most were from the 1920s. Nevertheless, our off key singing brought great joy to the residents. The audience was singing along and reminiscing over the old tunes. Afterwards, the residents expressed sincere gratitude for the singalong. It was amazing how such a simple act could really go a long way.

OAK PARK TAKES OVER KIWANIS MEETING by Irena Yang Oak Park Key Club board members and I attended a Thousand Oaks Kiwanis meeting on Wednesday August 20. While I was initially very nervous going into such a special event, we were instantly welcomed with warm smiles and firm handshakes. When our club went up to talk, one Kiwanis member instantly yelled out, “Oak Park how do you feel?! We were awkwardly mortified but went through the entire cheer with enthusiasm, garnering a loud cheer from the audience. I began by introducing the club and explaining our purpose, and then the other officers and I took turns talking about our clubs upcoming service projects, fundraisers, chaperone needed events and the various awards we received at DCON and ICON. In the end, we were so grateful that the Kiwanis members would purchase all our remaining Project Eliminate bracelets! We not only had a great time filled with laughter, but also helped out a great cause! It was truly a remarkable experience.

Newbury Park AYSO SOCCER KICKOFF by Julianna Heller Helping out at the Kiwanis table on Saturday games are great way to spend my weekend. It was fun to learn new skills like making balloon animals and face painting. Also, it was fun to interact with my community and watch the kids light up with excitement. Lastly, it was a great opportunity to become closer with other key clabbers from Newbury Park High School as well as adults from the Kiwanis club. It was an overall amazing experience that was also a fun way to help to serve the community.

HOMELESS SHELTER DINNER by Diana Tai Volunteering at the homeless shelter was a rewarding experience as usual. I helped set up, serve, and clean up dinner as well pack lunches. This week in particular, it was awesome to see participation from the freshman class. I can tell that we have a very passionate and responsible up and coming class of Key Clubbers and I look forward to working in more service events like these with them in the future. Santa Susana VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MOVIE NIGHT by Ravindu Ranawaka On Friday September fifth I attended a public showing of The Lego Movie at vista Elementary School. My job was to sell first aid kits to prospective parents worried about the safety of their children, employing pathos and other business techniques I managed to sell many first aid kits, garnering a gargantuan amount of money to benefit Vista Elementary. The field of the school was packed with a throng of elementary students nestled in the cusp of their juvenescence accompanied by their parents. The grassy lawn was perforated with comfortable quilts and portable lawn chairs that served as comfortable seating in order to watch the movie. The film was played on a colossal inflatable screen and the movie was projected onto it. The weather was crisp and warm and the aroma of butter slathered popcorn and saccharine candy perfumed the summer air. The children swarmed to the refreshment area to purchase candy bars and obtain free popcorn to fill their tiny stomachs. All in all the experience was enjoyable and spending time with my wonderful fellow key club volunteers made this a night that I would never forget. (pictured on front cover right)

MOORPARK UNDERCLASSMEN REGISTRATION DAYS by Kayla Stafford My experience at registration regarding Key Club was fantastic. It was really fun to get to know all the incoming underclassmen, let them know what Key Club was about and why they should join. It was nice to see students and parent take an interest in our club. Passing out flyers and having a raffle really got our membership up. Plus our location for registration was wonderful; everyone had to have seen our table and banner. Overall, the registration experience was grand for I believe we’ve interested plenty of new people and now I’ve made some more friendships.

THE HAIRCUT PLACE FUNDRAISER by Jamie Gavino On August 16th we held our most successful fundraiser yet! We contacted and worked with a Moorpark Kiwanian, Ms. Sue FitzGerald, on allowing us to fundraise at her haircut place. Throughout the day, we had Key Clubbers talk to the customers about our club and what we do in the community, and everyone, for the most part, gave us a generous donation. We profited roughly around $875! It was an enjoyable event filled with laughter and smiles. We all had a blast and had a celebratory dinner afterwards.

EDUCATIONAL FOOD TRUCK MEET-UP by Michael Ayers The Food Truck Meet Up that our lovely school hosted on August 17th was an afternoon of music, food, movies, friends, and lots of fun. We volunteered our time overseeing Ms. Sue Fitzgerald’s booth for The Haircut Place, where we encouraged people of all ages to learn more about this wonderful local business. By helping with set up, clean up, and general supervision, we made sure to give back to the people that helped to make our haircut fundraiser the previous day such a huge success. Be sure to stop by again next year and immerse yourself in the incredible volunteer and service opportunities our community has to offer.
