With BOLD, together with the architects of OZ and the installation specialists at Klimaatgarant, VORM is setting the tone internationally for the innovative use of solar panels as visual-aesthetic construction materials. Chris Zwiers, Architect and Partner at OZ, explains how in BOLD the desire for sustainable energy technology goes hand in hand with strict architectural requirements.

“For BOLD, we’ve combined a very technical look with the warmth of wooden niches and transparent parapets that form the exterior spaces. The wood is also visible from underneath / on street level. The solar panels are not attached to the facade – they ARE the facade. So not an addition, but an integral design tool. That’s the really innovative part of the architecture. We found a company that makes the solar panels with an almost velvety appearance, resulting in a softer look.” Ensemble of black tones “Deep recesses – frames that are set back more than thirty centimetres from the outer facade – create a relief and give a shadow effect. Contrasting materials and the rhythm of the facade help create vibrant shades of colour that are constantly changing depending on the sun, the time of day and the angle from which you are looking. The glass also plays a role in an ensemble of varied black tones that interact with each other.” Cosmopolitan “The tower is in the middle of a location where so much is happening. The towers being built here enhance each other in line with the adage ‘unity in diversity’.
One has a very smooth appearance, the other a horizontally stacked appearance. In that context, BOLD has a strong technical appearance. On the ground floor level we wanted to make the tower as transparent as possible with functions that contribute to public life. With this development, North Amsterdam is reinforcing its own character, but in direct relation to the rest of Amsterdam. The city is becoming more cosmopolitan but at the same time preserving its unique atmosphere thanks to the use of lots of vegetation, its relationship with water and the economic activity in the area.” Spectacular view “BOLD undeniably has that strong relationship with the River IJ. From different sides, you look out over the water towards the old city. The homes on the highest level have the most spectacular view over the city. The penthouses on the 23rd and 24th floor cover two layers, with a large mezzanine in the living room that is more than 5 metres high. When you stand there and look at Amsterdam through the mezzanine, you get the fantastic feeling that you’re standing on the bridge of a ship.”

first time we did that in Amsterdam. Normally, for a project of this scale you construct a source that extracts heat from the wider surroundings. We built a soil system that goes very deep, down to 300 metres. It stores heat and cold exactly within the confines of our own plot, so there is no limitation whatsoever for future neighbours that may also want that in the long term.” The creation of BOLD was an exciting challenge for the innovative pioneering mentality of the project partners. A challenge they were only too happy to accept. The energy performance, the comfort and the healthy interior environment are all the responsibility of Klimaatgarant. CEO Wim van den Bogerd explains why BOLD’s energy performance is exceptional for a building of this height and how VORM and Klimaatgarant are managing to realise this. “What makes BOLD so special is its energy performance coefficient (EPC) of -0.12. Nowhere in the Netherlands has a more energy-efficient building of this height been constructed. This is because the EPC of -0.12 means that the sustainable energy systems, including the solar panels that are cleverly integrated into the facade, jointly generate more energy than needed for heating and cooling, tap water and ventilation of the homes. A negative EPC therefore means that there is energy left over for domestic tasks. Each home has several solar panels that are directly connected to their own electrical systems.” Extremely deep soil loops “It was a challenging project for us. We did everything we could to solve all the technology issues on our own plot. We succeeded in doing that by opting for heat and cold storage with extremely deep soil loops. This is the

Silver lines “BOLD presented us with challenges that we had to consider very carefully, which is something we relish doing. Another challenge was that we had to deliver solar panels with aesthetic attributes. Until recently, that was a purely technical product with silver lines running through it. For the first time, we had to combine sustainability with three elements: comfort, a healthy interior environment and aesthetics. By doing this, we’ve shown sustainability to be the high-tech concept that it is. I think it’s great that a builder and developer like VORM has had the courage to take on such a challenge. In that sense, VORM is really an innovator in the field.”
