We've missed you Yes, it has been awhile and we've definitely got some catching up to do. However, with good friends it never feels like a chore to reconnect...only a welcome gift. While Dabble's contributors and editors are eager to share some new home tours, recipes and travel destinations with you, I thought it might be a good idea to revisit some of my fave home tours from Dabble's early days. I hope you enjoy this little stroll down memory lane. And, I hope it wets your appetite for more Dabble (daily Dabble!) which is coming your way next month. It's great to be back......we've missed you.

Simple Pleasures
With sunshine pouring through the windows, reflecting onto cushy white upholstery and pristine walls, there’s nary a trace of the formerly dark rooms the Ingram family moved into several years ago. Craving a backdrop for living rather than a “show house”, Culley, a self-taught design enthusiast, set about creating a peaceful sanctuary for her family of four.

Undaunted by raw possibilities, Culley sees blank spaces on walls and in rooms as “opportun-ities.” This chair, for example, was found at Antiques at the Factory and the busy mother of two fell in love with the artisanship behind its elegant shape. The oil painting is by Danielle Rahe Fox, an artist from the Ingrams’ hometown of Santa Cruz, California. Family, as displayed in the homegrown gallery rising above the main floor staircase, is a priority for Culley and her husband, songwriter and music producer Jason Ingram.

Chic & Shabby
Despite a proliferation of self-help books and TV shows which seem contrary to this opinion, not everyone struggles with decorating. DIY’er Sunny Ravanbach says, “If you stick to your personal style, know where to shop and trust your instincts, the process is enjoyable.” Visiting her lovely Santa Monica condo makes it impossible to argue with the tangible results of her personal decorating philosophy.

HOME TOUR “I don’t think about decorating - it’s super easy for me,” says Sunny. “I know people struggle with it, but I just buy what I love and somehow it all works.” Of course, she lives enviably close to some of LA’s best design shops, including the original Shabby Chic store on nearby Montana Avenue. “I absolutely love the simple colours and the easygoing vibe of the furniture at Shabby Chic. Although the iconic shop, which first opened its doors in 1989, is the basis for her look, Sunny wanted her home to feel more ethnic, so she’s added touches from India and Morocco. “And don’t call it country,” she insists. “It’s got its roots in elegant European design.”

Undaunted by occasional design work, Sunny ‘aged’ a new dining table with layers of paint and strategic sanding. Rather than opting for a matching set of dining chairs, the fearless decorator selected eight mismatched seats, allowing the dining table to play host to lingering dinner parties where friends needn’t worry about spilling a glass of wine.

“It’s true that my job is somewhat design oriented,” muses Sunny. “Maybe that makes it easier for me to jump-start my project.” She did that by purchasing the oversize coffee table. “I don’t like small things,” says Sunny, “I buy big furniture and accent with attentiongetting accessories.” Having done such a lovely job decorating for herself, we want to know if Sunny ever considers going pro ? “I’ve been tempted to,” she laughs, “but I get to satisfy my need to decorate on a large scale through my event planning business. That’s enough for me right now.”

Lazy Days
Looking to renovate their Kiawah Island vacation property, a Connecticut couple turns to designer Erin Glennon to create a space that is vibrant, clutter free and suitable to rent to occasional guests. Undaunted by previously dark and dated interiors, Erin added painted white beadboard wainscotting, simultaneously enhancing natural sunlight and adding architectural interest. White’s such a useful colour for providing a backdrop to the vibrant hues and patterns so well-suited to vacation living.

Bold artwork— purchased at a local antique shop, creates a focal point and ties the room’s bright colours together.
DESIGN
“I really like the idea of furniture blending into the walls to create an airier feeling in vacation homes, says the designer. In the foyer (preceding pages), a whitewashed Shaker style console with distressed finish handles hastily tossed keys and provides an ideal perch for sea glass lamps. Stacked orange boxes complement the sea green colour of the lamps and provide additional storage for smaller items such as flashlights or even beach-ready flip-flops.

The biggest challenge may have been the dining area. It’s a pretty tight space and yet it needed a table large enough to seat 6 people. In addition, two of the three walls are sliding glass doors, which meant we had to sacrifice a serving buffet. We used the large scale print to anchor the space and create the room’s dramatic focal point.

“A bed that sleeps more than one person should always have an end table on each side, no matter how small, insists Erin. Aesthetically this room reflects a slightly more rustic interpretation of the Kiawah landscape through the textured banana leaf headboard, antlers and plaid woolen throw. The small portraits above each bedside table are by local artist, Alaina Michelle Ralph.

Sophisticated colour pairings and nautical details, like the navy and white valance on the window, combine to provide the master bedroom with the desired coastal style. The rustic bench at the foot of the bed and Moroccan area carpet add texture and comfort without being too formal. For the upholstered headboard, Erin opted for a practical Sunbrella fabric in a crisp white. The wall colour, Benjamin Moore’s Natural Elements, reads as a light neutral but actually changes as the day goes on, becoming more greenish-blue. “This is one of my favorite wall colors,” says the designer. “I use it to create bedrooms that are, above all, restful.”

Family Moments
In the Lakemont area of Bellevue, just a short distance from Seattle, Sophie and David Vander share a 4,200 square foot home with their children Imogen, Saskia, Estelle and Anaïs . The house is nestled on Cougar Mountain and, despite reports of infrequent visits with cougars, Sophie was hooked on the place the moment she looked out the big bay window in the kitchen to the garden. She realized then, she was home.
OPPOSITE: The fruitwood harvest table in the kitchen is one of Sophie and David’s first purchases together. “Although it isn’t a terribly expensive table, we love how it has aged over the 14 years we’ve been a couple.” Fall 2013

Above the mantle is a painting of pink flamingos by AJ Power which Sophie found strangely intriguing. “I was grabbing a coffee in a café that showcased the work of local artists,” says Sophie. “It ended up being an expensive cup of coffee!” Although Sophie says she feels very grown up when she sits in this room, it’s not stuffy or overly done— it has flaws and quirks like all rooms should.

“I definitely love a little girl’s room that feels old-world but is still bright and happy,” says Sophie. For Estelle and Anaïs’s room the designing mom combined coral bed throws with vintage pieces with new finds. Though the Vanders attempt to keep toys to a minimum, there are books aplenty. Floor space is important in this household. There has to be room for an impromptu danceathon in every room in the house. The girls’ beds are Hillsboro by Wesley Allen from Carolina Rustica and the bedding is part of the Sari Blooms collection by Amy Butler for Welspun. A Surya ‘Goa 85’ round wool rug provides a soft place for the girls to play. The bird lamp, curtains and tie-backs are from Urban Outfitters.

In the en suite, Sophie searched high and low for the right mirrors for above the sinks. “I knew what I wanted but couldn’t find it at any of the highend places,” she says. “I eventually found them at Lowes Hardware, would you believe?” The Moravian star pendant above the Victoria and Albert York tub is from Antique Lighting in Seattle.
