Could there be a more fitting view outside this Brooklyn living room? The living room is a relatively long and narrow space, but Sheena uses layers of pattern, dynamic artwork and bold fixtures (like the floor lamp) to create depth and visually widen the challenging space.
Where to Buy The coffee table is a vintage table, found at an Upstate NY flea market. The sofa was from an independent store in Dumbo called Journey. The chair was from eBay, the bench and white buffet are from West Elm and the rug is from ABC Home.

The condo is a compact 650 square feet, but its layout efficiently allows for a single bedroom, a den, a living and dining area and an open plan kitchen. “For this project,” says Sheena, “we were all about creating a comfortable, interesting home, which satisfied the opposing styles of the owners.” We also had to ensure the view was the star of the show. Originally, the space was a white box. We kept the original exposed beams and the previously designed kitchen and bathroom, since it suited our vision and complemented the adjacent bridge views.

Get the Look Made the trip to Manhattan a hundred times, and what? You haven’t crossed that bridge (not even once?) to see what’s on the other side? Designer Sheena Murphy offers advice to Dabble’s readers who want to create a funky Brooklyn feel at home. 1. Mix and match materials. Often people worry about mixing metals and woods, but I think that provides interesting dimension and richness in a space, particularly when working with mostly neutral colours, or a pared-down palette. 2. Shop high and low. Invest more money in the most-used pieces in your home, such as your sofa and bed, and pair these with flea market finds and more affordable items to create a collected, less contrived feel. This, in turn, can also help to manage the budget. 3. Drape the window. Particularly when you have a narrow room, you can create the illusion of width by installing drapes on each side of the window. This is an incredible trick of the eye that we used in this project.

The bedroom has the same view of the famous bridge as the living room. With that in mind, the designer’s goal was to keep the furnishings relatively calm and quiet. Touches of gray take a cue from the industrial surroundings while yellow accents in the bedding add warmth and colour.

Ever walked through a leafy neighbourhood and wondered what life looks like on the other side of the front door? If so, you’re in luck. Designer Kathryn Scott graciously opens the doors to her beloved Brooklyn rowhouse, inviting us to take a leisurely look around.

A unique and intoxicating setting, Kathryn’s home is actually one of three sister houses built during the 1850s-60s, all in a row. Formally, the space served as the home and office of the minister of St Ann’s Church. Today, it’s a divine family home with a mix of one-of-a-kind objets d’art and comfortable seating. The formal brownstone parlor has grand proportions, which are contrasted with a rustic stucco wall finish to minimize the formality of plaster moldings.

Designer Eye: The coffee table, designed by Kathryn, is carved out of a single piece of white Chinese marble from when her husband had a stone carving studio in Xi’An, China. The iron base was added in New York City. The buffet (next to large framed art) was inspired by the simplicity of Japanese furniture shapes, but made by artisans in China. The wood was actually singed to bring out the pattern of the grain. The partial statue of a lady was purchased at a Christie’s auction years ago. Kathryn loves the way the drapery was depicted and prefers that it’s imperfect and headless. “The ink painting is my husband Gu Wenda’s work,” says the designer. “I love his work and it really makes the room!”

Working as the designer, client and construction worker (as was the case with this renovation), Kathryn gained invaluable insight into the design process and the point of view of each kind of participant.
“I learned the consequences of every decision, the challenges of building every idea and, in the end, had to pay for the project as well.”
Kathryn Scott The challenge of working with a home that has original architectural details dating back 165 years (see the plaster crown molding in the dining room left) is creating additions that look and feel coherent and consistent. The spaces had to be modified for modern living, but Kathryn’s goal was to create a harmonious whole.

Kathryn designed the dining room to look like a library with soaring windows to flood the room and floor to ceiling walnut bookshelves accessed via a wheeled ladder. The dining room crown molding survived as it is today but had to be restored in the adjacent kitchen. Designer Eye: The custom dining chairs, inspired by an antique. Kathryn’s mother had the dining table made years ago out of two slabs of cypress— way before it became a popular trend. The chandelier, by Holly Hunt, also came from her mother’s house.

HOME TOUR The chairs flanking the pine armoire are Wenda’s work (it’s lovely having an artist in the family). They were designed for the biennale in Lyon, France, so they incorporate both French and Chinese chair styles—Louis XV with Ming— the most ornate with the simplest.

The master bedroom is light and serene. The French doors allow light to stream in from the southern exposure. The room furnishings are a mixture of both Kathryn and Wenda; pieces from both family cultures. “I love the melon coloured drapery,” says Kathryn. “The colour looks subtle when open, but when the light shines through them they become a vivid persimmon orange.” The strie walls are like a watercolour. The floors are wide plank quarter sawn white oak. Designer Eye: The headboard was custom designed for Kathryn’s mom, who lived downstairs at one time. The bedframe is walnut and the headboard is covered in cinnamon coloured suede. The nightstand and bench are Qing dynasty, bought in Shanghai. The lamps, also custom, were originally designed to be used on a dining table that had no overhead pendant. They hold 3 battery wax candles each and are remote controlled.

The bathrooms were typical rental apartment level quality when Kathryn and her family first moved in. Gone are the beige ceramic tiles and standard fixtures, replaced by salvage plumbing from Urban Archaeology instead. Everything is antique. The gargoyle was a terracotta architectural salvage Kathryn found by accident while looking for a wedding present for her brother. It was drilled to turn it into the tub filler, adding unexpected character to the bathroom.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was recently ranked in the top 15 most visited museums in the world—and with good reason. It houses 22 themed galleries and over 8,000 objects. There are collections pertaining to natural history, an interactive area for kids, and important works by Salvador Dali, amongst others. Riverside Museum is a dynamic, innovative waterfront gallery that displays Glasgow’s rich industrial heritage stemming from the River Clyde. From prams to motorcycles and bicycles to steam ships, intriguing examples are thoughtfully displayed. Designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, it was crowned European Museum of the Year in 2013. The Burrell Collection consists of more than 8,000 objects gifted by Sir William Burrell. An extraordinary collector, Burrell’s acquisitions include art, textiles and sculptures from late medieval and early Renaissance Europe, as well as Chinese and Islamic art, and works from Rodin, Degas and Cézanne.

Cake Boss’
Red Velvet Cake INGREDIENTS
1 ¼ cups vegetable shortening 2 cups granulated sugar 1 tbsp cocoa powder 4 ½ tsp (2 tubes) red food-colouring gel 3 cups cake flour, plus more for dusting the cake pans 1 ¼ tsp fine sea salt 1 ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract 1 ¼ tsp baking soda 1 ¼ tsp distilled white vinegar 3 extra-large eggs 1 ¼ cups buttermilk Unsalted butter, for greasing 2 cake pans (about 2 tbsp); non-stick cooking spray or vegetable oil may be substituted
INSTRUCTIONS Position the rack in the centre of the oven and preheat the oven to 350°F. Put the shortening, sugar, cocoa powder, food colouring, cake flour, salt, vanilla, baking soda, and vinegar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Paddle, starting at low speed, then raise the speed to low-medium and mix for about 1 minute. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, mixing for 1 minute after each is absorbed into the mixture. Add the buttermilk in two portions, stopping to scrape the sides of the bowl between additions. Grease two 9" cake pans (2 " high) with the butter, and flour them. Divide the batter evenly between the two cake pans, using a rubber spatula to scrape down the bowl and get as much batter as possible out. Bake until the cake beings to pull away from the sides of the pan and is springy to the touch, 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour. The cake should be at room temperature before you remove it from the pan. Put a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet, top with sugar, dump onto parchment; the sugar will keep it from sticking. Refrigerate or freeze until ready to decorate.
