Calgary Stampede I can't say I've ever been to the Rodeo. You? There are lots of things I've haven't done. Skydiving. Bungee jumping. Caramel making. Ice fishing. I've never had blond hair. My activities tend to be of a milder nature. Hiking. Biking. Skiing. All done at a leisurely (some would say dull) pace. Which is just fine this time of year. Everything moves slower in the sunshine. I won't tackle most things on my "haven't done it" list, but I will visit Stampede one day. It looks like fun and the locals are some of Canada's friendliest. Plus, I've already got the boots thanks to a TV special I did a few years back. I'll buy myself a hat. Blend in with the locals. Eat candy floss. Let me know if you want to come along. Happy summer. Whatever you're dabbling in.

Beyond Basil If you’re ready to go beyond basil it’s likely you need a large vessel to contain your choices. This rustic barrel inspired pot is ideal for a country setting. Dabble Savvy: Starting with the vessel you want to fill simplifies the decision process when it’s time to purchase herbs.
Three Glass Hothouse (LEFT) Any glass container is ideally suited to hold an herb garden. The angled opening of this contemporary vase makes reaching in for clippings a snap...a snip? Vintage Pots If you crave order, you’ll love placing your herbs in individual pots. "There's no greater compliment to a designer than being asked to do a second (or third) project for a client," says LeAnne Bunnell of Elle Design in Calgary. When repeat customers hired interior designer LeAnne Bunnell to transform an intended bachelor pad into a comfortable family home they knew they were in great hands. After all, they'd worked with LeAnne before and were confident she had the skill to bring their design and lifestyle visions to life. Were they pleased? They're already working on their next project together.

There’s an app for that... WORDS BY JAMESON FINK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGELA AUCLAIR
When it comes to food, nothing beats the comforting classics. With the arrival of summer and the juiciest, sweetest tomatoes, what more do you need than to dice them up and toss with a little olive oil, some salt, and a snip of fresh garden herbs? Well, how about a vehicle to deliver that taste of the warmest of seasons to your mouth? Preferably in the form of toasted bread. Bruschetta to the rescue! While hunger is being sated, you’re probably getting a little thirsty too. For wine, I hope. And tell me you’re outside on a porch, patio, or lawn. You are? Perfect! Have I got a bottle for you. From the Okanagan Valley, please welcome the 2012 Joie Farm Muscat. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Muscat sounds like Moscato so am I recommending something crazy sweet? Au contraire. The folks at Joie Farm do a fantastic job of letting you know what’s in store far better than I,

explaining, “The inspiration for this wine is the dry Muscats of Northern Italy, low in alcohol, crisp in acidity, and perfumed like no other wine.” Though there is a slight sweetness like a whisper in the wind, the zippy finish is an extra gust that sends it sailing along. In other words, it drinks quite dry. This wine is gorgeous to smell and refreshing to drink. A light and lively wine like this dry Muscat is perfect for the freshest summer fare, like our fair bruschetta. And if you got a little crazy and mixed in some peaches with those tomatoes and added a dash of red pepper flakes, you’d really have something going. Not hungry? Seriously? Fear not, as this is a wine that also pairs well with nothing but a comfy chair or a group of friends. Note: The 2013 is available now.

INGREDIENTS AVOCADO MIX: 2 avocados, diced 2 limes, juiced 8 sprigs of cilantro, picked, washed and chopped finely Salt and pepper CABBAGE MIX: Julienne: 1 carrot, peeled 2 cups green or purple cabbage 1 red onion, peeled TILAPIA: 4 filets of tilapia Olive oil 12 x 6” corn tortillas 2 limes, cut into wedges

Corey’s recipe for pickled onions to spruce up your fish tacos!
Directions In a medium sized bowl, combine avocados, 1 juiced lime and ⅓ of the cilantro. Mash the avocado leaving some chunks. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Place in fridge. In a separate bowl, combine the carrots, cabbage, onion, the remaining cilantro and one juiced lime. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix well and set aside. Place tilapia on a plate and season with salt and pepper on both sides. In a large skillet or non-stick pan heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear tilapia on both sides for about 4-5 minutes per side. Tortillas: Place corn tortillas on a plate and cover with a napkin. Heat in the microwave for 15-20 seconds to warm through. For soft, flavourful tacos, heat tortillas by warming them in a pan with hot olive oil. Select a tortilla and spread the avocado mixture down the centre. Add the slaw mixture and then crumble the tilapia over top. Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy. Add salsa if you prefer. Dabble Savvy: Tilapia is a delicate white fish so use a spatula instead of tongs to turn.
