Each summer, we wait with anticipation for our first opportunity to go swimming in our pond (you can see my country house on page 36). It feels like a miracle. Wasn't it just 8 weeks ago or that the entire landscape was fully covered by ice and snow? Somehow I allow myself to become convinced that summer will last and last, though history has shown me it's a blessed (and fleeting) moment in time. I long for striped towels and can't wait to hang up our outdoor shower hooks (see page 20). For some, fine weather means gardening. For me, it's time to simplify my decorating. We think you'll love our easy, breezy product pages this month (thanks to contributors Lisa Canning and Christine Da Costa). However you celebrate the season, all of us at Dabble magazine hope you are finding ways to stretch your sunny days.

The cottage's dining room has a refined rustic sensibility thanks to the wood light fixture that perfectly complements the wood table. Linen chairs from Restoration Hardware and silk draperies soften the space. The antiqued mirror adds simple elegance to the space. Darlene selected the white wash finish for the shutters to play off the home's coastal location. Located in Prince Edward county and close to the Bay of Quinte, the cottage is near some of Ontario's most beautiful beaches.

Find and print a map of your favourite city. Enlarge it on a photocopy machine to create a pleasing scale.
PAPER CUT
Place your map on top of a large white sheet of paper and tape together and then tape both pieces securely to cutting mat (so papers don’t shift). Using an Exacto knife and a metal ruler as a guide, carefully cut through both sheets of paper removing only the buildings and landmarks and leaving the streets uncut. The streets will remain intact, attached to the white paper.

Once all cuts are complete, remove the tape and carefully separate the photocopy from the white paper. Place the cutout underlay on top of a black or colourful piece of paper and affix in place with a spray adhesive.

Kimberley and her husband Bob were drawn to the Creemore area thanks to its vibrant, artistic spirit and the community's commitment to sustain and secure local farming practices.

To reflect a respect and appreciation for the land, the home's exterior is designed to resemble a modern barn. The Canadian white pine siding was harvested locally, then custom milled and installed to align with the window mullions.

"Canada is the most beautiful country in the world," says the designer. When you're designing for a rural setting like this, the key is to let the landscape shine by choosing finishes (like the stone and wood floors) that reflect what nature has already provided. LEFT: The peek a boo wall separates the entrance from the living and dining room. Though it is designed to be pleasing to look at, it's also a practical feature as it blocks some of the coldest blasts of air when the front door is opened during winter months.

DESIGN Set between two stone fireplaces, the openconcept living and dining areas overlook the property's two ponds. The water is a soothing backdrop but also supplies geo-thermal energy to the home. Clean lines and neutral colours keep spaces airy and light and allow Kimberley to change accent colours with the seasons. A similar colour story appears throughout the home and into the master bedroom. Benjamin Moore’s Ballet White (OC-9), one of Kimberley’s signature colours, creates a clean, chalky foundation that layers well with other smoky shades of oyster and grey.

Focaccia RECIPE BY COREY BURGAN

FOOD
INGREDIENTS 325ml water (slightly above room temperature) 1½ tbsp dry active yeast 1 tbsp sugar
¾ cup bread flour 1 tbsp salt 1½ cup all-purpose flour 1⅓ cup potatoes, mashed and cooled
1 sprig rosemary, leaves picked and chopped 6 cloves roasted garlic, chopped
4 sprigs thyme, leaves picked and chopped ⅓ cup olive oil
Herb Mixture
Directions In a small bowl, add water, yeast and sugar and set aside. Let the mixture rise 1-2". Tip: Keep mixture in a warm area of the kitchen to speed up the process. In a large mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients and potatoes. Add in the yeast mixture. Stir mixture with hands or using a mixer with a dough hook attachment until combined. Remove from bowl and place on a floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes with hands or in mixer on low for 2 minutes and then at medium for an additional 10 minutes. Place in a well-oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap until the dough doubles in size. Once the dough has risen, preheat oven to 350°F. In a small bowl, mix rosemary, thyme, garlic and oil and set aside. Remove dough from bowl and punch it until it is deflated. Portion the dough into balls that are approximately the size of a fist. Once portioned, roll into long strips. Using 3 strips, pinch one end of each log together and braid strips. Pinch the ends together and then combine the two ends of the dough to create a circle. Repeat with all strips. Spray or oil a medium sized muffin tin. Place each ball into the muffin tin. With a pastry brush, generously brush herb mixture onto balls. Cover and let rise for 10 minutes. Remove plastic and bake for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown. Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on each bun and a little more oil once they are removed from the oven. Tip: To enhance flavour, cook herbs in olive oil. In a small sauté pan, heat up olive oil, rosemary and thyme on low-medium heat. Remove from heat as soon as you can smell the essence. Let cool and then brush on dough.
