Editor’s Notes Hi Daegu, Welcome to the October issue of the Daegu Compass. October is the month of change. So celebrate the changing colors by taking a hike somewhere and breathe in a fresh start. This is an exciting issue. We have the Daegu International Opera Festival from p7-15. We hope you have time to check out an opera or concert this month. There are a lot of festivals around Korea as well that are worth experiencing. You can find out about more festivals on p44. This month we are slowly transitioning into monthly sections. So we need your help to fill in those sections. You’ll notice how we started with restaurant reviews after the Daegu International Opera Festival information. Memories of a first love became a popular opera. Memories of a first love became a popular opera. It depicts the life, music and love stories of Park Tae-Joon, a musical composer who was the pioneer of Western music in Korea and brought glory to the city of Daegu.

When lilies bloom on hills of green silk, where the symphony of spring is playing- amidst the fragrance of the lilies,...... When you bloom in my heart, all my sadness fades away’. Park, one of the representative composers of Korea, was born in Daegu. He composed 'Missing You' with cherished old memories of his first lover in mind. Daegu International Opera Festival ambitiously stages ‘The Memory of Chungna Hill’, a creative opera that incorporates Park’s life, music and love into a rich story. The love story progresses dramatically to stimulate the sensitivity of audiences, bending time between the love story of a young and old Park. Moreover, familiar songs make audiences feel nostalgic, and the characters that have become famous in Korea’s Western music history provide enjoyment to spectators by revealing their innermost personal stories.

any Italians claim that ‘The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves is the 2nd national anthem of Italy’. Rossini said, “The chorus is a huge aria for the soprano, alto, tenor and bass.” Nabucco is an operaic work which got hearty cheers on its first performance and rapidly turned Verdi into a master musician. It develops dramatic stories based on themes like love, revenge and mercy through subjects including trial, faith and the victory of the Hebrews, so audiences cannot take their eyes off it for even a moment. Tellingly, The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves is famous enough to be called the 2nd national anthem of Italy and makes audiences fully enjoy the power of its dramatic and dynamic chorus. It cleverly depicts the intense aspirations of Jewish people in their long battle for liberty.

In celebration of the 200-year anniversary of Wagner’s birth, ‘The Flying Dutchman’ will be performed in its original language in Korea for the first time. It is the story about the myth of a Dutch ship captain who wanders throughout life in perpetual limbo because he has been condemned to damnation. Wagner is one of the most influential composers in musical history and his popularity has led to his fanatical fans being dubbed “Wagnerians”. His operas showcase some of the most difficult composition techniques and have been performed only about six times in Korea. Accordingly, this performance is monumental in its ambition to boost the status of the Daegu International Opera Festival by raising performances to new levels of quality. The opera has won high praise from the domestic media for its creative stage technique which lifts the stage floor up into the air and makes various dramatic spaces. It plays for 2 hours and 10 minutes without intermission in order to best express original operatic intentions. 10

My Lord, here’s the list of beauties who the master loved.” Don Giovanni is Mozart’s comic opera that deals with the sexual appetites of humans directly. In the Catalog Aria act I, the hero chases women endlessly, having already been involved with 2,065 women. However, his attempts to cajole women into accepting his apparently truthful love results in ultimate misery. The performance is the climax in which all the musical talent of Mozart, who Heiden called ‘the greatest composer humankind knows’, is encapsulated. Especially the prelude is a masterpiece which reveals Mozart’s genius as it is claimed that he completed it within only a few hours on the night before its opening performance. The opera, which is made by European producers and Asian vocalists, will show the ideal beauty of opera buffa through perfect digestion, fantastic harmonies and cheerful compositions.

he most recognizable heroine in opera history appears in DIOF. Carmen, red skirted cigarette in mouth and cross-legged, is the archetypal freespirited gypsy woman. She enchants audiences, charmingly singing the famous aria ‘Habanera’ with the libretto ‘Love is a rebellious bird. That nothing can tame.’ Carmen, a masterpiece of Bizet as well as a legend of Opera, closes the glorious curtain upon the festival. It is the most immortal work which speaks eloquently for the emotions of French music, and it remains the work most cherished by opera lovers around the world. The opera evoked a great sensation in the opera community when it was produced through its familiar melodies, impassioned music, unique characters and refined composition technique. Carmen is the representative sensuous opera of France and shows the essence of orthodox opera by French producers and dignified performers. It tells the tragic love story of a passionate gypsy woman called Carmen and a staff sergeant named Don Jose and is set in the exotic locale of Seville, Spain. 12

Immortal Love between a God and a Mortal from Greek Mythology. Fine Work by a great master of baroque opera, Handel, in the eighteenth century. An Invitation to a Dignified Classic Opera

aegu international opera festival offers a real banquet of colorful opera, and it has prepared baroque classic opera Acis and Galatea which is a delicacy among the typical European operas produced in Italy, France and Germany. Acis and Galatea is a fine work by Handel who was a great master of baroque opera in the eighteenth century. It is famous for its beautiful costumes and stage designs, and is characterized by repeated simple melodies which the audience can sing along to. It is based on Greek myth and depicts the fateful love story of shepherd Acis, goddess Galatea and monster Polyphemos, who loves the goddess from a distance. Acis and Galatea will be specially performed for the first time in Korea, and it shows the essence of baroque opera performed by the Amici Opera Company, which received acclaim for its production of Dido and Aeneas last year.

Pokrovsky' visits Daegu. Moscow national Chamber Opera house, celebrating its 40th anniversary, planned to have a performance in Korea for celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Daegu International Opera Festival. 'Chamber Opera' is a high psychological representation that uses different techniques to integrate into the song. The famous Russian director 'Boris A. Pokrovsky' has presented over 60 works for more that 10 years continuing his career in Moscow at the Chamber Opera house. Especially, he has elevated the theater's status and capability in Germany, Japan, etc. by selling out his performances. Ten tenors who are highly active at home and abroad decorate the splendid ending of 10th Daegu International Opera Festival. Celebrating the 10th anniversary, electrifying performances with a powerful voice and outstanding singing ability is comprised of vibrant and powerful opera aria, songs, and so on with ambition for the soaring festival. It will be a special concert which shows full of charm and character of 10 famous vocalists and a beautiful harmony at the same time.

On January 7, 1828, 15-year-old Wagner, who was impressed by Beethoven's Symphony No.9, wrote the music for the piano in a theme of symphony, and he published a short novel <Pilgrimage to Beethoven> in 1840. Also, the paper <Beethoven>, commemorating the centenary of Beethoven's birth 1) Beethovenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s music is the expression of inner emotions that is hard to control by external rule. 2) Beethoven improved music which was just category of beauty as perfect and magnificent value. 3) He expressed music as the most purest language and found sublimity of German soul. In conclusion, Beethoven had a crucial role for Wagner's music and development process of his character, and Beethoven became the source of musical inspiration for Wagner. 10/20 <The Flying Dutchman> and the former part of Wagner opera, Yong-sook Lee In 1843, Wagner's early masterpiece <The Flying Dutchman> which was first performed in Dresden Court Theater is a romantic opera that was composed before he yet found the German form called 'Musikdrama'. It still had Italian opera style with the following biographic work, <Lohengrin>, <Tannhauser>, so it is not difficult to appreciate. Looking at the legend of ghost ship which was the theme, ship-

And there was a masterpiece of his life, <Der Ring des Nibelungen> at the climax. We prepare the time that we can experience essence of Wagner's art world by the super special masterpiece and completion of his art, <Der Ring des Nibelungen>. Poland Wroclawska Opera Advance Audition Oct. 19(Fri.) Daegu Opera House Marking the 10th anniversary, Daegu International Opera Festival, leading the development of opera and international exchange, carries out the leading part audition for 2012/2013 regular season performance of historic Poland Wroclaw National Theater. Poland Wroclaw National Theater chief, Eva Michnik, Poland academy of music, professor Richard Kirchikovski, etc. will be invited to be members of the judging panel for the audition and plan to dig out talented rising singers in Korea. uffets have always bothered me. What bothers me even more is how many people seem to love buffets, and the enthusiasm with which they profess said love, and how these people look at me like I’m some sort of weirdo just because I’m not as jazzed as they are at the idea of paying more than I would for a normal sized meal so I can have the privilege of gorging myself on mediocre-at-best food. “Why have a nice steak with a glass of wine when you can shovel like, fifty greasy egg rolls into your gullet and wash it down with another plastic cupful of fountain soda?” I’m a cynic you say? A jaded snob? Picky? You’re correct on all three counts. However, my recent experience at the newly renovated Boccaccio Brau (former Ariana buffet and brewery) has me reassessing everything I thought I knew about buffets and the dining experience they can provide. While the food here is truly great, Manager Lee Jin Taeg stresses that it’s more than just the food quality that makes the Boccaccio Brau superior. He isn’t joking. First of all, even by buffet standards, this place is huge. It is spacious, wide open and the ceilings are incredibly high. The main dining area has tables that can accommodate parties both small and large. There are also three semi private rooms all along the perimeter which can seat parties of 30, 50, and 70. Most of the seating provides a view of a large stage on which a live

band performs every night. That’s right, live music at a buffet. The house band here is called X Project and they can really groove. They play tons of modern standards, providing a cool atmosphere without being too loud or distracting. Not to be confused with some Vegas lounge act, X Project are real professionals. Now, let’s talk about the food. To rattle off a list of all the foods available would take forever. Suffice it to say, the Boccaccio Brau can satisfy almost any craving. The main island of food offers a wide range of both Asian and western dishes. There is a series of bamboo baskets which each contain different types of dumplings. Move further down and you can find a multitude of pasta, steak and seafood dishes. My favorite two items from this section were the buffalo wings and the fried shrimp with chili sauce. I wound up hitting these stations for fourths and fifths. Purists may fault the wings for being less than authentic (they are not served with traditional buffalo sauce), but rest assured they are still delicious; crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The lasagna also deserves an honorable mention for being the most popular dish in town; there seemed to be an endless procession of new trays of it coming out as customers kept going back for more. In addition to the main island there is another section which steps up the gourmet experience even further.

BOCCACCIO BRAU - MICRO-BREWERY There is a salad bar here offering a huge variety of salads, some familiar, some fairly exotic, which are swapped out frequently so they never sit for too long. You can also find a sushi bar, a barbecue pit with an awesome selection of grilled and smoked meats, a brick oven for pizza, and a few pots of different curry dishes served with naan prepared in a real tandoor oven. All of these stations are overseen by their respective chefs at all times so you can always expect the kind of freshness you usually wouldn’t associate with buffets. What to drink? The fountain soda which I scoffed at in the first paragraph is available of course, but Boccaccio Brau has one more ace up its sleeve for those diners with more sophisticated palettes: microbrewed beer, crafted on

site by a schooled-in-Germany brewmaster. It gets better; during dinner hours it’s all-you-can-drink (after 9pm, and during lunch hours, it will cost you 6,000 Won per glass). The two special types available are a high quality dark stout or a tangy, wheat-centric “baijel” (comparable to a hefeweizen). If you like craft beers, then these treats are reason enough to make the trip to Boccaccio Brau. You literally won’t find them anywhere else. All things considered, the Boccaccio Brau is an incredible bargain. 24,900 Won will get you entry on weekdays. That price “jumps” up to 25,900 on weekends. Most people will be able to get triple value on that admittance fee in under an hour. It is located in Suseong-gu, slightly north of the

lake, so car or taxi is the best transportation option. Just tell a cab driver “Hotel Ariana (Boccaccio Brau is still very new and most cab drivers won't know it yet.).” When I was faced with the prospect of reviewing a buffet, I didn’t exactly jump at the opportunity. Even the prospect of endless draft beer didn’t quite inspire me. I may have been reluctant to go, but I’m glad I did and I have every intention of going back.

Hami Mami’s has been a pillar of the Daegu community for more than four years. Family owned and operated since the very beginning, this fantastic establishment has provided foreigners and natives alike with an authentic taste of the west with a focus on diner style breakfast foods and lunch sandwiches. After a long run at its quaint, original location, the Ha family recently decided to move to more spacious digs. The result is a much more accommodating incarnation of the already awesome restaurant many of us have come to know and love. If there was one knock against the original location it was its size, but now that’s ancient history. Hami Mami’s 2.0 is incredibly roomy. There are long tables which can seat up to eight people in addi-

tion to a few standard two and four-tops. Even when it’s a full house inside there is ample elbow room, so customers will never feel cramped. The décor is colorful to say the least. The walls are painted a deep

red with bold white lettering advertising some popular menu items. The chairs alternate between hot pink, spearmint and off white. It may sound wild, but it’s lit tastefully by the giant windows which let in all kinds of sunlight and a cool network of translucent light bulbs that hang from the white ceiling. The menu boasts a great assortment of western breakfast and lunch foods. If you decide to go the breakfast route, the most basic option is the Hami Mami Breakfast. It includes two eggs any style, two hash browns, and bacon or sausage. If hash browns are too heavy for you, get the Bagel with Cream Cheese Combo, which swaps the above-mentioned hash browns for a nice, fresh bagel with a generous smear of cream cheese. The American omelet comes

Perhaps the most impressive breakfast item is Benny’s Breakfast Burrito, which is essentially the Hami Mami Breakfast PLUS spicy salsa and jalapenos packed into a tortilla wrap. Best to use a knife and fork when attacking this behemoth, though some brave souls may try picking it up with their hands to have at it. The French toast, which is delicious, can be served plain as a side, but if you want to have an incredibly rich dessert for breakfast then get it as a main dish, in which case you can have it stuffed with your choice of strawberries or bananas and smothered in syrup and cinnamon. The breakfast items may be the scene stealers at Hami Mami’s, but the lunch sandwiches and entrees should not be overlooked. The club sandwich for example is a thing to behold. Served on a fresh baguette, it comes piled with marinated chicken breast, bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, a freshly sliced pickle and honey mustard. Other standards are available like fish & chips, the BLT, and the classic Philly cheesesteak. You can tack on French fries to any sandwich order for 2,000 Won. Although the breakfasts and sandwiches should be more than ample for most people, those with monstrous appetites might want to supplement their order with an item from the long list of sides. For instance: getting French toast, pancakes, or biscuits and gravy to go with your egg-based breakfast is a slam dunk and will leave you stuffed. Caffeine heads will enjoy the unlimited refills of fresh brewed coffee, while those who prefer not to get wired can choose to go with a nice fruit smoothie, hot chocolate or juice. Need to take the edge off? Have an ice cold draft beer. Also, there are currently plans in the works to add a Bloody Mary, the brunch classic and slayer of hangovers to the menu. Hami Mami’s offers great value to go along with its great food. Everything on the menu is under 10,000 Won, with most of it falling in the 7,0009,000 range. If you were familiar with Hami Mami’s old location then you will have no problem finding the new one; it’s right across the street. Newcomers should take the 730 bus to the Camp Walker stop or have a taxi take them to the main gate at Camp

Walker. Servicemen and women living on Camp Walker need only walk to the first corner on the right outside the main gate. Hami Mami’s is open from 8am to 9pm straight on weekends and with a two hour break from 3pm-5pm on weekdays. Like any good diner, breakfast is served at all times. They are closed on Mondays. Make sure you get to Hami Mami’s next time you feel a craving for a satisfying taste of home. The great food and super cool atmosphere are sure to make it well worth the trip!

nter the B1 floor of the Hyundai Department Store and your senses will be, more than likely, overwhelmed. There are some clothing stores on one side and food, lots of food, taking up most of the floor space on the other. It is, of course, just a food court but it is unlike any of the food courts found in the malls of America or other western countries. Let's start with the main area. After you pass a bakery and a cosmetics store, you will be faced with many choices. Craving American food? Project Burger has some of the best burgers in town, made to order and right in front of you. Want something spicier? Head over to Moku Teppanyaki for a spicy beef noodle and rice set, cooked with lots of

style and flare on a huge griddle. Looking for stronger flavors? Try the creamy chicken curry with turmeric rice from India Gate. I could go on, but you get the idea. If you are looking for a more traditional food court fare, check out Chef Avenue. The restaurants there are divided by letters, each representing a different country

or style of cooking. Avenue K has traditional Korean foods such as bibimbap (of all kinds) and naengmyeon (cold noodles); at Avenue J you can find some Japanese staples such as donkkasu or udon; you can eat Chinese jajangmyeon (noodles with black sauce) over at Avenue C. At the entrance of Chef Avenue you can also find a very tempting conveyor-belt sushi place. After enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants, you should check out the desserts and snacks, of which there are several options. Hyundai Department Store has renewed their offering for the fall season, having added several new kiosks to an already wide selection. If you want a light and flavorful snack you can take around downtown with you, you should

definitely try Minas. This kiosk sells Brazilian cheese bread with a twist: it's a healthy snack. It doesn't have sugar or flour, and it's not fried. It's actually made from tapioca and baked to a very fluffy texture. You should try the onion-flavored cheese bread. It was recommended by Mina's employees and it definitely hit the spot. Other flavors include original, garlic, and bacon. Right across from Minas, you can find Snowmounteen. This kiosk specializes in bubble tea, which is a tea or juice with tapioca jelly bubbles at the bottom of the cup that you suck up through a large straw. This is the latest craze to hit Korea and for good reason. They are refreshing and have just the right amount of sweetness. Snowmounteen offers regular bubble tea as well as teas mixed with ice cream or shaved ice. Hopefully, after all that food, you'll still have some space left for dessert. Head over to Gentle Lady Cupcake for some interesting cupcake flavors. I tried the Oreo-flavored cupcake and it made me want to try the rest of them. And if you need a gift for that special someone, or if you just have a craving for something sweet, be sure to visit Jeen's Chocolate for a wide assortment You can get to the Hyundai Department Store by subway. Just get off at Banwoldang station and follow the signs that take you there. If you take a taxi, tell the driver to take you to 현대백화점 (HyundaiBeck-Hwa-Jom). And, if you are already in the downtown area, you can walk through Medicine Street until you see the large department store.

eminiscing about successful food encounters in Korea always brings a smile to my face. One dish in particular has been the absolute highlight. Duck in Pumpkin or 오리호박 in Korean. Duck in Pumpkin is not a typical kind of Korean meal. Some call it Korean Fusion food; I just call it amazingly delicious. A massive roasted pumpkin filled with perfectly roasted duck. Hungry yet? After much google-ing and navering. we finally found a place out in Igok and prepared for what was due to be a feast of epic proportions. At first. we were given Pumpkin soup which was amazingly divine. I haven’t eaten pumpkin since my time in Korea so it was pure bliss. Then the Banchan (Korean side dishes) arrived. There was the traditional Kimchi, marinated Mushrooms (Think I ate all of them), Cabbage salad, Chilli peppers, Onions, Garlic, Lettuce leaf salad, some kind of marinated vegetables, Sesame leaves, Lettuce leaves as well as a small bowl of seaweed soup - 미역국. We dug in straight away and I was so excited to see the main event I couldn’t contain myself. Then BOOM!!!

There it was!! A big burst of pumpkiny goodness with a roasted ducky mountain bang in the centre. My heart started doing flickflacks!! We asked the lady manager how we should eat it and she just said take a piece of the duck dip it into the sauce (A mix of soy sauce and wasabi) add on a piece of pumpkin and boom into your belly. Absolute perfection. I was in ducky pumpkin heaven and could have honestly ordered another one. The Duck was soft, tender and sweet with a hint of saltiness. The pumpkin was perfectly roasted and the section of pumpkin underneath the duck had absorbed all the delicious juices and tasted even more unbelievable then my first bite. Duck in pumpkin had certainly lived up to its expectations. We then ordered some Kalguksu (Knife Noodle Soup). No there are no knives inside. The noodles are usually handmade, rolled and cut with a knife, hence the name. After we finished the noodles. we were offered Coffee, Japanese Apricot Tea - 매실차 and Korean Tradition-

al Tea - 오미자차 . The flavors were relatively mind blowing. I tried to describe the flavor of the Korean Traditional Tea - 오미자차 tea but all I could come up with was that it tasted Oriental. It was an explosion of sweet, sour and spices, almost cherry like. The apricot tea had a yeasty/doughy/beer flavor to it and was just as awesome as the first. The perfect non alcoholic digestif, to finish the perfect meal. The restaurants name is 고야 and is located in Igokdong. I suggest taking the subway to Igok Station and then catching a cab from there to the restaurant.

he busiest lunch spot in Siji is μ°Έν ν μ μ (Chamhan Tosogjung) and itβ s worthy of every customer that passes beneath its hanok veranda out front. Named β pretty tradition houseβ in old-school Korean dialect, μ°Έν ν μ μ does not cater to the fusion-food-touting crowd of gourmands. Its traditional menu and neutral-toned setting weaken the knees of those looking for the comforts of country life. And while a lunch will run you about 9,00015,000 per person, you can depend on every one of the 15 side dishes being homemade and staunchly traditional in flavor and selection. Especially compared with a handful of other traditional restaurants that cannot compare to μ°Έν ν μ μ quality but will charge you twice the price, a 10,000 KRW lunch (or dinner) really is the best deal in town. When you walk in, youβ ll be seated at the traditional Korean dining tables and given your sharing bowls and tea mugs. They serve two different kinds of fresh herbal loose leaf teas from large dispensers near the front entrance. They serve a many different main courses, all of which come with the standard 15-side-dish spread, but there are just a few that I keep returning for. My first love was the λ³΄μ μ μ (bosam jungsheek) which is a plate of fresh pork meat, similar to that of samgyupsal, that has been boiled in a broth of gochujang and other traditional flavors. The boiling is done to perfection, leaving the meat tender and juicy while removing a good portion of the saturated fat that marbles the meat. The dish comes with a side of kimchi and soondae, with your standard white rice and a basket of

greens to wrap it all up. Enjoy this or the specialty λ λ μ μ (deoduljungsheek), which is a root vegetable native to Korea that is barbequed in a smoky sweet pepper sauce and served on a hot plate. If you want something completely clean and soothing, they also serve up dolsot bap. You can order this delicious hotpot rice with either greens or beans, and they are both equally delicious. If you havenβ t tried dolsot bap, it is customary to first open the wooden lid to the hot rice and scrape out the rice into a separate rice bowl before pouring hot water (provided to you in an aluminum kettle) into the remaining scorched rice at the bottom of the pot and letting it sit with the lid on until the end of your meal. When you finish eating, you open the pot and scrap out the soggy steamed rice. μ°Έν ν μ μ

is also located next to a number of other delicious and note-worthy restaurants, one of which serves up a famous bowl of kalguksu with the creamiest of bean broths you have ever tried alongside a side dish of crunchy and sweet green peppers. For μ°Έν ν μ μ take the subway to Sinmae Station. Walk straight out of exit 7, with the park on your immediate left, for two blocks until you see the Paris Baguette right in your face and a small side street to your left. Take that left and walk until youβ ve reached the cell phone shop to your right. Look left. There youβ ll see μ°Έν ν μ μ wedged between the other great restaurants. For the kalguksu, go to the white restaurant two doors to the right. Enjoy.

he Korean Animal Protection Society, or KAPS for short, is an animal rescue charity based in the Daemyoung area of Daegu City. The charity was founded in 1989 by Sunnan Kum, the charityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current chairwoman. Mrs Kum was a working wife and mother of two when she rescued her first street cat, who was covered in mange and crying in a drain. She says now that, looking back, that cat forced her to embrace a love for animals she had been avoiding for years. She had loved animals as a child, her father had taught her to have love and respect for them. She says now that she had closed her eyes to the pain and suffering of animals she passed on the street for a long time, believing there was nothing she could do for them and being completely overwhelmed by the enormity of the problem. Flash forward, and KAPS is now one of the oldest animal rescues in Korea. Mrs Kum has been interviewed many times for TV shows and newspapers, local and abroad. She and her charity continue to fight for animal rights in Korea. KAPS now has three shelters, two in Daegu and one in Boeun and houses more than 200 animals. Last year they rescued more than 3500 animals from the streets of Daegu. The foreign volunteer side of KAPS is, in comparison, very recent. The first dog walk was organised in March 2010, and had 25 attendees. These monthly dog walks have really been a turning point for KAPS. Dedicated foreigners created an adoption program from which 86 dogs and 25 cats have so far been adopted. Some of these have been through a foster home, others straight from the shelter. These programs are specifically for foreigners in Korea because we have a completely different set of needs, working schedules and future scenarios to manage than Korean adopters. The organised dog walks happen during Autumn and Spring, however due to the extremes of weather we experience in Daegu, and the fact that most of the shelter residents are small companion animals, they are not year round. There are three dog walking events coming up soon. September 22nd will be the first dog walk of the Autumn season. WHERE MY DOGS AT? - KAPS the walk will go around the Duryu Park Lake. On October 14th, KAPS will be heading to the Boeun Shelter to walk and bathe the dogs there. This shelter houses larger dogs than Daegu including many Huskies, Malamutes and some Great Pyrenees. The shelter is a 2 hour drive from Daegu so KAPS will rent a mini bus, spaces are limited but check for details on the Facebook Events Page. Then on October 21st, the Daegu dog walk will coincide with a cage cleaning event. This enables volunteers to clean the cages while the dogs are out getting some fresh air. As disease is a huge problem

in the shelter environment this simple action can go a long way to helping the dogs stay healthy.

After each dog walk some volunteers head to the nearby cat shelter to hang out with the cats, this environment has a bit of that Zen quality, that cats are so good at pulling off. This year we are really hoping to have more foreigners involved at KAPS, we are looking for anyone who is interested in donating their time but we do have some special projects in mind that we are looking for specific help with. Fundraising is always an issue for a charity and in Korea this comes with extra challenges. Anyone who is interested in building interest in KAPS and funds for it would be really appreciated. We have several potential projects which aim to raise the profile of KAPS within Korea and abroad, these are in need of people with publishing experience, both online and on paper. Our foster program is always in desperate need of volunteers, and it is a great alternative to adoption. It is challenging work, but fantastically rewarding and an experience to be cherished. n Saturday 1st of September, Daegu Dragons Rugby Club hosted the latest round of games in the Korea-wide 10-a-side rugby tournament. The games were played at Korea’s only purpose-built rugby stadium in Gyeongsan. Daegu Dragons won the last tournament in Daejeon with some fabulous try scoring from the very strong South African contingent in the team. The tournament was great fun for the players and for all of the supporters who came to cheers us on and to enjoy the day. Teams from all over the country, as represented by Daegu Dragons, Busan Bandits, Jeonnam Aliens, Cheongju/Daejeon Knights, Seoul Survivors and Osan Airbase, competed for a very shiny trophy supplied by the Dragons’ main sponsor, JJ’s Bar and Grill. There are normally more military teams involved but most finished manoeuvres the previous

day and unfortunately could not make the trip to Daegu. After unfortunately losing their captain, Lee Gaskell, to illness for the tournament, Daegu opened up against the Busan Bandits. As always between these two powerful teams, the match was physical

and bruising. Mike ‘The Rhino’ MacFarlane earned and then lived up to his nickname in this and the other two games with some crushing running and tackling. The final score was 26-5 and with 4 tries scored, Daegu earned a bonus point. Next up for the Dragons was a friendly game against the Seoul Survivors’ second team, the ‘Killer Bees’. For the Dragons, this was a useful match for the newer players who have recently joined us to join in, get some game time and to show what they’re capable of. The game was a high speed encounter and was a good game to watch. Seoul Survivors showed their strength in depth and were able to secure a win but they were hard pushed by the Dragons’ boys. This set the scene for the Dragons and Survivors to play against each other with their first team

BATTLE DRAGONS - DAEGU RUGBY squads for the first time this season. This one was a great game for all involved and the Survivors caught the Dragons napping to open up a first half score of 19-0. After a rousing half-time speech from stand-in captain, Melt Van Der Spuy the Dragons ‘never say die’ attitude shone through in a fascinating second half and the final score of 19-17 reflected how much the Dragons have improved as a team in the last few months. The third and final game of the Dragons day was against Jeonnam Aliens, a fast, fit side of native English teachers based in a town in the southwest of Korea. These games are always great to watch and Daegu did very well to restrict them to just one try with some last man heroic tackles on or around the try line throughout the game. The game ended 19-7 to Daegu. With their two wins and an accumulated score line of 62-31, the Dragons squad earned a very respectable runners up finish to the ever-strong Seoul Survivors who took the trophy back to the capital with them. ounded by Leo Corbett and Mark Melican, Daegu Fianna (Fianna is the Irish for “warriors”) Gaelic Football Club has been in operation since 2007. In its early years, Daegu Fianna used to compete against Seoul Gaels in various challenge games throughout the year. From there, the club has developed and now takes part in the Korean Gaelic League (KGL) and Korean Gaelic Games (KGG), in which Seoul Gaels and Laochra Busan also participate. Last year, Daegu entered 2 men’s and a ladies team in the Asian Gaelic Games staged in Suwon, where Gaelic Football teams from all over Asia descended upon Korea. The men’s A team impressively reached the quarter finals. Gaelic Football is an Irish sport. The best way to describe the game is that it is a cross between rugby, soccer and Australian Rules. The

ball can be handled and hand passed, and also kicked. Normally, it is a fifteen-aside game, however, due to the game being played on a soccer field, which is smaller than a Gaelic Football one, and often a lack of numbers, it is reduced to 9-aside here. Also, 7 minutes a half are played, rather than the normal 30.

Hence 1 goalkeeper, 3 defenders, 2 midfielders and 3 forwards are required to play the game in Korea. The scoring process is simple; the goalposts are in an H shape, similar to rugby. If the ball is sent over the crossbar by either a kick or punch of the ball, one point is given. If it goes under (like a goal in soccer) 3 points are awarded. For a more in-depth view of how the game is played, one should search the following on YouTube: “Gaelic Football – The original Beautiful Game.” The Daegu Fianna Club provides a fantastic sporting and social aspect for ex-pats living in the city. Although originally an Irish sport, the sport has also proven popular among Americans, Canadians and South Africans. Sarah Halloran from Massachusetts, USA says she loves the game as: “it’s a quick, intense game that combines skills from a lot of different sports.

IRISH FOR WARRIOR - DAEGU FIANNA You can pick up the rules pretty quickly and there's something for every kind of player.” Ljubijanka Kuresevic who hails from Cape Town, South Africa claims she enjoys “that it’s a contact sport where it’s not a foul to ‘bump’ into your opponent” and describes it as “fast paced fun”. Emphasizing the many disciplines of sport Gaelic Football covers, Ljubijanka also states that after “playing netball and basketball for so many years . . . Gaelic Football has a bit of everything that I’m already used to.” She also added that - being from South Africa where rugby is huge - Gaelic Football was not difficult to get hooked on. When Geoff Pevlin, originally from Newfoundland, Canada, was asked as to what attracted him to the game, he said that he was

originally a bit intimidated to play as he’d only seen the game on TV. But he quickly realized that it was a relatively easy game to pick up so his lack of ability wasn’t much of an issue. Geoff also describes the infamous après tournament parties as “an added bonus to Gaelic Football in Korea!” This is when most of the players from Daegu, Busan and Seoul all descend on the one venue for a memorable night. On a more serious note, like most clubs either in Ireland or abroad, Daegu Fianna is not without its problems. The recent departure of several Daegu Fianna patrons has meant a shortfall of players. However, current PRO and team trainer Michael Considine and Club Treasurer Sean Prendeville are working around the clock in order to bring in new faces to the

team. On the plus side, this year Daegu Fianna have been kindly sponsored by Caliente Restaurant and Champs Bar, and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their continued support. As stated above, no experience is necessary in order to play the game, so new members, no matter what nationality or experience level are always welcome to attend training in Duryu every Saturday afternoon. olorful Daegu Festival has been going since 2005, which is held as a street festival in the middle of city. It's Daegu's signature fall festival. Under the slogan of ‘Color, Enjoy the Festival!’, its divided into two themes, “Color Festival” and “Culture Festival” this year. The Color Festival was on Sep. 13, and 14. You might have noticed the street between Banwoldang station and Daegu station was blocked off. Street performances and art shows lined the street to celebrate the new season. “Culture Festival” will be held from 10th(Wed.) to 16th(Tue.) at Dongseongro pedestrian street, Gyungsang Gamyoung Park, 2.28 Memorial Park and in front of Daegu Department store. Also, the 93rd National Sports Festival will be held in Daegu, and to celebrate it, Daegu’s professional art groups from each field will do openair performances with Daegu citizens. At Gyungsang Gamyoung Park, you can listen to Korean traditional music steal your heart with a free concert, 2.28 Memorial Park will present art performances with opera, musical, vocal music, jazz and fusion music. outh Korea is a front-runner in many areas these days, not the least of which is in medical tourism. According to some estimates, the industry is expected to grow by as much as 30 percent in the next year alone. As the third largest city in the country, Daegu is hoping to get in on the action. In order to bring attention to the top-level facilities and procedures available here, the Daegu Metropolitan City and Daegu Medical Tourism Information Center hosted a promotional event from August 31st – September 2nd. The promotional event, located in front of Daegu City Center, served as an tremendous opportunity to learn more about the medical services and amenities in the city. Even more exciting was the “Experience Zone” – a series of free tests conducted by experts from various medical establishments throughout Daegu. Upon arrival to the event, we were greeted by Claire who works with the Daegu Medical Tourism Information Center who provided us with a great deal of insight and explained all of our tests. The first experience was a consultation by Oblige Plastic Surgery hospital which specializes in fat transplants as a safer form of breast augmentation and dermal fillers. There are three surgeons at this facility, all of whom speak English. They also perform a large number of rhinoplasties, eye-lid surgeries, 48

and other standard cosmetic procedures. For the consultation, the experts provided me their opinions on where dermal fillers would be most effective in reducing the ravages of time on my 24 year old face. (Conclusion: forehead)

Our next stop was the booth for the International clinic of Hyosung Medical hospital. This hospital specializes is obstetrics and gynecology but welcomes patients of both sexes for general medical needs. Everything from thyroid checks to cancer and STD screenings are available here. All employees are currently making efforts to become internationally certified by Joint Commission International. This hospital boasts an experienced and Englishspeaking staff. For their part of the Experience Zone, they offered blood sugar and blood pressure tests. (Result: all good)

Next up was the booth for Korea Medical Institute (KMI) which is billed as an excellent establishment for general health and medical examinations. They are very conveniently located on the 5th floor of the Daegu City Center. Here I underwent a bone density test. (Result: consume less soda, more milk)

Our second to last stop was the Kyungpook National University Hospital (KNUH) Hair Transplantation Center. This is actually one of the worlds leading hair transplantation centers and the director, Professor Jung-Chul Kim, actually developed the follicular unit hair transplantation technique in 1992. Here I was given hair-preserving shampoo and a scalp exam to check for signs of baldness. (Result: no signs of hair loss!)

DAEGU MEDICAL TOURISM Our final visit was to the Yeongcheon Son booth. This is also an Oriental clinic with a focus on acupuncture and herbal medicine. This is a prestigious establishment that has been around for over one hundred years and specializes in treatment and management of chronic pain. They treat a wide variety of ailments and make a very attractive claim that they are “a shortcut to a happy life”. These experts even offer treatments for smoking cessation. After our conversation, I was given a stress test that involved me sitting silently without moving for two minutes with a computer sensor attached to my hand. (Result: too much stress, stop smoking) If you or somebody you know is interesting in taking advantage of Daegu’s exceptional and diverse medical offerings, do not hesitate to contact the Daegu medical tourism information Center at 1688-9977 or stop in to see them on the 6th floor of the Daegu City Center. The cost of health care in Korea is lower than in western countries despite a truly excellent standard of care. If you are looking for anything from oriental medicine to a cosmetic procedure, Daegu is a great place to be.

onsidering the heat and humidity, summer may be the worst time to visit Hong Kong, but when Jeju Air offered a 99,000W (225,000W with fees) discounted round trip flight, it became the best time to go. 열과 습도를 고려한다면, 여름은 홍콩을 방문하기에는 최 악의 시즌이다. 하지만 제주 항공이 9만 9천원을 할인한 ( 총 22만 5천원의) 왕복 비행권을 제공했을 때에는 여름은 떠나기에 최고의 시즌이 되었다.

Hong Kong deserves about a week to explore at a leisurely pace as the city offers plenty of tourist attractions and a wide selection of good eats. Accommodations range from about 22,000W for dormitory style rooms to about 40,000W for a deluxe single room with your own private bathroom per night. Upon arriving at Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong, buy an Octopus transit card for $150 HKD (just over 20000 won). Since the international airport is on Lantau Island, you should make Ngong Ping 360 your first tourist destination. Ngong Ping village was specifically created to bring in tourism to the island. It is a very touristy area, but the cable car ride to the village and other sceneries are worth the trek. Take the Airport 50

Express rail line to Tsing Yi Station, transfer to the Tung Chung Line and head to Tung Chung station. At Tung Chung Station is a shopping mall with storage lockers on the lower levels to hold your luggage. Other islands to check out include Lamma Island, Cheung Chau Island, and Peng Chau Island. The islands are accessible from the ferry pier near Central Station. Go to Lamma Island if you would like a quiet day hiking and looking at the scenery. There is a trail that connects the two piers on Lamma Island that will take about two hours to walk. Don’t be tempted to bike the trail as there are many steep inclines. The hike from Sok Kwu to Yung Shue Wan felt less arduous than the hike from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu. continued on p52

Good eats in Hong Kong are too long to list, but if you’re on a budget, have a meal at a dai pai dong, Hong Kong’s version of a food stall. 홍콩에서의 별미는 열거하기 어려울 만큼 많지만, 당 신의 여행 예산이 넉넉하다면, 다이파이동이라는 홍콩 의 음식 노점에서 식사를 해보라.

The tastiest and most laid back one was located on Stanley Street, parallel to Queen Street in Central, near the entrance to the Central Mid-Level escalators. After a failed mission to find “Kitten Paradise” on Cochrane Street, this gem conveniently appeared. The food was delicious, the beer was cheap, and the waiting staff were funny. If you come to Hong Kong, be prepared to put on weight. 가장 맛있고 한가로운 곳은 센트럴 지역 미드레벨 에 스컬레이터 입구 근처의, 퀸 스트리트와 나란히 위치 해 있는 스탠리 스트리트에 있다. 코크레인 거리에 있 는 “Kitten Paradise (새끼고양이 천국)”을 찾는 미션 에 실패한 이후, 이 보석과도 같은 곳이 편리하게도 나 타났다. 이 곳의 음식은 맛있었고, 맥주는 저렴했으며, 종업원들은 유쾌했다. 만약 당신이 홍콩을 방문한다 면, 체중이 늘어나는 것을 감수해야 한다.

YEONGCHEON TOUR REVIEW

t all started with us meeting at 8am at Banwoldang station. Then a short bus ride to a gun powder museum where everyone ended up taking pictures all over the tanks. After that, we were off to a winery, where we picked grapes then made wine. Next, we had an awesome BBQ pork lunch. The owner of the winery "Kachi" was super friendly and had us do a grape spitting contest for a bottle of wine. Mr. Im Chae Man, was a gracious host. Everyone enjoyed the lunch along with the wine he provided. We made it to our rooms at Im-go Seowon, only to find that we were the first to stay in them. Heck there was still plastic on the TVs. We were four to a room, that had a western bathroom with a shower. Everyone was really impressed with the accommodations. Once we were settled, we went to visit Im-go park. Where we saw a 500 year old

tree and a traditional school dating back over 450 years. Also, we saw an impressive 40 foot 50 ton rock that cost over 100,000,000won. All of these landmarks were right next to our rooms - is that cool or what? After our tour, we enjoyed a traditional Korean tea ceremony

and our hostesses were dressed in traditional gowns. Next, we were off to the water sports. Because of the recent typhoons, the ATVs were replaced with the water sports. Some were a little disappointed but the rest had a ball riding the jet skis, the peanut boat (seated four and pulled by jet ski), banana boats (bicycle paddle boats) and canoes. While I spent most of time on the water , others experienced the festival that was so much bigger and better than last year. With so many vendors on both sides of the river, it was a sight to behold. On one side it was over 1/2 mile long. Very impressive! All the locals were so nice and friendly, they made us feel like celebrities. We had to get back for our Korean style buffet meal before we went to the Yeongcheon Observatory. We went there last year during

YEONGCHEON the day, this time was at night and was much more impressive being lit up by all the landscape lighting. While we were there, we experienced a virtual rollercoaster, dancing robots (which was cool) and a chance to look though a high powered telescope. Unfortunately, there was overcast and the clouds blocking the moon and stars. We made it back to our rooms and had BBQ hot dogs and chips. We bonded with our companions and the staff with food and drink. We ended up making new friends. We woke up to an awesome breakfast. After breakfast, we went to Byul Byul Art Village, where we viewed a variety of unique art forms. Throughout the entire village were pieces of art ranging from a tricked out bus stop to an unusually small store. Later, we enjoyed cheesecake and lemonade at the coffee shop. Now we're off, back to the festival but first we had our last meal. We had galbi. Once we arrived at the festival, we enjoyed everything from a foot and hand massage to a foot bath in hot wine (Never done that before). This is after we were put on stage and asked to perform "Gangnam Style." It was fun and funny to watch! A special thanks to Yu Jeong Lee and Yuri Lee for making this trip a well organized and exciting adventure. Our group of 15 DODEA teachers from Camp George, the group from Gumi and the girls from Masan and Changwon all had a wonderful time. This trip exceeded all of our expectations. AMP WALKER, South Korea - The 18th Korean-American Friendship Circle opening ceremony and dinner was hosted by the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command at the Evergreen Club here September 14. The event allowed 15 teams of Korean sponsors, U.S. military sponsors, families and Korean college students a great opportunity to meet each other for the first time. There were 15 teams, each seated at a table, and they all had an opportunity to fellowship, enjoy a meal together, and listen to speakers. There was even a string quartet that played music from Mozart to the Beatles. “It was a very enjoyable evening,” said Ms. Yi Mi-young, who is participating for this semester’s KAFC program to meet Americans and learn more about their culture. The distinguished guests for the evening were the KAFC Advisors, Mr. Kim Hak-bong, Mr. Kim Moo-Yun, Mr. Lee Seung-ju, Dr. Kim, Ik-dong and Mr. Shin Shang-il. They shared a head table with the 19th ESC Commanding General, Brigadier General Paul C. Hurley, Cathy Hurley, his wife, the 19th ESC command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Austin, and his wife, Elada Austin. Each of the senior leaders and their wives made it a point to visit eack of the tables, introduce themselves to the guests, and get to know a little bit about this years participants. “The goal of the Korean Ameri56

can Friendship Circle is to allow participants of both nations to gain a better understanding of each other through a program of social and intercultural based activities,” stated Col. Chadbourne, Co-President of the KAFC and the Matrial Support Center–Korea commander. Chadbourne, who is participating in his fifth team with the program, went on to thank Dr. Kim, all the participating universities and the KAFC senior mentors “who’ve helped propel the modern miracle that is Korea – transforming it into one of the world’s most dynamic economies to a thriving democracy and prosperity not only in this region but also around the world.” Participants look at the program as a chance to experience unique opportunities. “This is my second year with KAFC,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Markeith Spell, U.S. team sponsor. “I want to get to know

as many different people as I can while I’m here in Korea.” “My brother went to America study and he has a global mind and I envied that,” said Gwon Sol-bi. For university student Mo Ju-hyun it was conversation with Americans and learning about their culture. “I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas most,” said Park Su-yong an economics student at a local university. It was evident that when Dr. Kim spoke and stated that these students represented the future leaders of Korea and that they should work hard to be good ambassadors, these students took his advice to heart. Whatever table I visited there was enthusiastic conversation going on and there were lots of smiles and laughter going around.

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. There are multiple areas dedicated to similar products. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. FAR FROM THE TRUTH :P The Clone Population Wars

ecent research has revealed that Korea is in fact light years ahead of the rest of the world in cloning techniques. The Koreans stole ahead in the mid-eighties by choosing one example each from a variety of personalities and beginning a rigorous cloning program. The end result, some 25 years later, is that there are in fact only 6 different individuals in Korea. The original specimens have been identified as: 1) Kim Jin Sum – an 83 year old woman with spinal problems, a fanatical interest in hiking, an atrocious taste in multicoloured garments, an unpleasant disposition towards everyone younger than her, a predisposition for sitting on the side of the road and selling vegetables, and a sublime and utter conviction that the entire world exists solely for her benefit. 2) Park Bin Woon – an 18 year old boy with very poor taste in hairstyles and music, the body and face of a pre-pubescent anorexic girl, extreme short-sightedness, countered by glasses 3 times the size of his own head. This particular individual is believed to have been utterly hairless apart from the top of his head – which may have been a wig. 3) Ryu Na Kyong– a female of uncertain age. She has undergone major surgeries to almost all parts of her face and body, leaving the original a mystery. The results were highly successful, leaving her with an impeccable outward appearance, but this mask also prevents the world from seeing what she thinks or feels behind its impenetrable façade. 4) Kim Eun Hee – the child. An infant, destined to be raised by her parents until the ripe old age of 2 months, when she would naturally be sent off to be raised by strangers and foreigners, so that the parents wouldn’t have to bother with her until she turned 18 and got into a top university. The modern genetic descendent has no discernible personality and is usually to be seen with a textbook in one hand and a phone in the other. May grow violent if either math or Angry Birds is taken from her. Exercise caution if approaching. 82

5) Go Won San – a middle aged man, whose previous experience involved working in a small local convenience store, driving a truck very slowly around residential areas at 9am on weekends while selling fruit via loudspeaker, driving taxis and owning a barbecue restaurant. 6) Kim Min Jeong – the mannequin. Somewhere between 18 and 30, this individual is female, in superb shape, highly attractive, and nowadays usually to be seen downtown with other individuals of the same genetic code, in either a bar or coffee shop. For some reason, all current examples of 2 and 6, upon coming into contact, appear to adopt the same dress codes and speech patterns. The scientists have no rational explanation for this. All modern day Koreans are descendents of the above few, with slight genetic changes which inevitably occur naturally over time. The outside world awaits to see how Korea will evolve in the future from this point. It is unclear what happened to everyone else in the eighties, but they seem to have gone the same way as the only architect ever to exist in Korea, who firmly believed that all buildings should be tall, grey and depressing.
