2BROS #3 Faithful to the Basics

Written by Katy Babiarz / Photos by Ick Jun Ha

Tired of the ‘same old, same old’? Looking for a place away from the typical night in downtown? Well, you are in luck because I found just that place! 2BROS #3 (투 브로스 #3) is located in the Bong-deok (봉덕) area (in between Camp Walker and Camp George, if you know those places) between the Hee-mang (희망) bridge and the Jung-dong (중동) bridge. Just a short walk from Sincheon River, it’s the perfect place for a cup of coffee or tea during the day or a beer at night with your friends, significant other, or even a first date.

90’s grunge music that I seldom hear and often miss here in SoKo. The DJ changes the genre of music every hour, so if the music isn’t your style when you first walk in, just wait a bit and it will be something completely different in no time. The usual styles are 90’s Rock, Old School Rap, Electronic, and Korean music (but not the K-Pop kind, except for the random Gangnam Style or Gentleman songs). Besides the music and artwork, there are three other notable things at 2BROS #3: the beer, the food, and the service!

When first walking into 2BROS #3, I noticed the unusual artwork hand-painted on the walls and the awesome

Let’s talk about the beer first and a few other spirits too! 2BROS #3 offers four types of draft beers: La-

ger (Cream Beer), Hefe Weißbien (Paulaner HefeWeißbien), Ale (Big Rock Traditional Ale), and Stout (Guinness). I got to try all four and I must say… that they were all delicious! 2BROS #3 takes complete pride in their beer craft here, and have even completed the first step in the Guinness Perfect Quality Program. Beer is no joke here! The prices range from the 2BROS Cream Beer at 4,000\ a glass to the Perfect Size Guinness at 10,000\. They also offer a wide variety of cocktails, bottled beers, craft beers, and even wine. Some include the Chocolate Cake (8,000\), Apple Martini (11,000\), and Dead (13,000\). I got to try the Strawberry Margarita (10,000\) and it was the perfect mix of slush and sweetness!

Now, onto the food! If you LOVE chicken wings and aren’t satisfied with the selection at some other more popular hotspots, come over to 2BROS #3 and try out their hot wings and potatoes platter (18,000\)! I love hot wings and after four years of being in South Korea, I haven’t really found anywhere that has had memorable ones. Well, I finally found my match Saturday night! These wings are so juicy, flavorful, and well-priced for the amount of food you receive. The three of us at my table were already full from the delectable Pork BBQ Platter (23,000\) and the Japanese-style Chicken (18,000\). So, we didn’t think we could eat any more at that point. Once we bit into the wings, we kept on eating and polished off the whole plate! So that says something right there about how delicious they were. Some other selections that are offered are a Cheese Plate (21,000)), Potatoes and Salad (9,000\), and a variety of BBQ and 12

Salad Platters (23,000\). The portions are great for two to three people to share, so don’t get shocked by the sticker price, and the flavor is out-of-this-world! Now, I previously mentioned that the service was notable. Why, you might ask. Well, I’ll tell you why! JJ, the owner of 3BROS #3 speaks fluent English and is so down-to-earth! She and I struck up conversations easily about music and life in general. The ‘beer boy’, for the lack of a better name, also spoke excellent English, which is always a plus when trying to get some information and advice about the food and drinks that are being served. As JJ was showing me around the huge and spacious bar that was recently expanded, I noticed the small stage in the larger room to the side. In the future, they are looking for singers and musicians that want to make some extra pocket cash. They hope to have Open Food Reviews - 2BROS #3

Mic Nights on Fridays and/or Saturday nights. So, if you’re interested in singing, playing guitar, bongos, or any other one to two man group, stop by 2BROS #3 and talk with JJ about it! Day or night, 2BROS #3 is the place to be with its comfortable tables and chairs, great ever changing music, mouthwatering food, and top-notch beers! After strolling along the river, walk on up to the bar on the corner, and enjoy a set of four beers and different options of food ranging from 23,000\ to 43,000\. It’s the perfect place to talk, dance, and have a good time!

Daegu International Opera Festival (or DIOF), a music festival which Daegu citizens love, and which represents Korea, is one of the representative Daegu art festivals whose seats maintained an 83 percent occupancy with around 100 performances by about 50 group from 18 countries from 2003 to 2012. Korea goes beyond Asia and into the center of the world opera! The opera festival, which received attention due to Korean singers and a production team entering Germany in 2009, got into China in 2010, Germany in 2011, and finally ‘Aspendos International Opera & Ballet Festival’ in Turkey in 2012 with <La Traviata>. This ‘made in Korea’ opera received a standing ovation and praise from the audience from all over the world, and made the headlines of over 10 press outlets. The performance in Turkey which made a splendid achievement of exporting almost all parts of opera including singers, production staff, costumes and stage, became a good chance to expand Korean opera’s range to go into the world stage.

Turkey and New York in 2014, Italy and Germany in 2015, and Poland in 2016, and makes a higher level of international status of Korean opera realistic. The opera festival, which became the hub of Asian opera based on the excellence of Korean singing talent and the producing technology of opera itself, recognized as the world’s best, will continue going a step towards achieving a great dream of the globalization of Korean opera.

With the participation in the international singing competition in April 2013, it entered Poland in May and became a legend by having all seats of its performance of <Carmen> sold-out early. The plan of overseas expansion has already scheduled -continued on p16-

Right after the premiere as the opening of the festival, this opera swamped with inquiries about record production and its encore, and received favorable comments from the music industry and interest from citizens, is produced by DIOF Organizing Committee through a composition contest at the national level. This work re-made in collaboration between Daegu Opera House and Daegu City Opera in 2013, improves the completeness through music supplementation and revision of the script and new casting. The story which described the sad and beautiful story of Daegu-born composers including Park Taejoon, based on familiar melody whose motif was from ‘Thinking of My Friend’, gained great comments both from the audience and critics, and it was evaluated that it opened a new prospect in the fields of Korean-made opera. The last opera of Philip Kang, a bass with a national treasure, entering Bayreuth for the first time as Asian! Korea National Opera, having received great praise from the international stage, visits Daegu with <Don Carlo>, which has got attention due to effective stage management and musical completion. This opera is the best human psychology-describing masterpiece showing precisely the love and betrayal, and misunderstanding and tragedy of the five main characters, including Filippo II, absolute monarchy in Spain who is marrying Elizabetta, a fiance of his son; Don Carlo, an unfortunate prince; Rodrigo, his friend and loyalist, and Eboli, who is a lover of the king but loves the prince. This opera is also considered as a golden opportunity which provides a ‘feast of arias’ in one place, because individual parts of all main characters are quite balanced, and they have at least one perfect aria each. Singers with the best talent, including Philip Kang, a legendary bass, who was the first Asian to enter Bayreuth in Germany, participate and raise the prestige of the festival even more.

Verdi has received love from Koreans due to its delicate psychological description and beautiful synopsis. Wagner boasts a unique existence in the music history by creating ‘leading motive’ and ‘music drama’. Enjoying these songs, check that Wagner already notices 'unendiche Melodie' which links next recitativo without clearly finishing each aria. Also, deeply look at the origin and nature of medieval chivalry, which become the background of work, and the problems of artist opposing the world. In addition, let's look into the tendency of directing for recent <Tannhauser>, and understand Wagner's intention to work by comparing the changes from 16-17 centuries old tradition of <Tannhauser>.

PAN

A Piece of Something New and Old Written by Katy Babiarz / Photos by Ick Jun Ha

Are you in Daegu for just a short trip and want to stay in a beautiful traditional Korean style guest house in the downtown area? Or, are you living in Daegu and want a place to eat that brings together the modern with the traditional? Pann (판) is the answer to your questions. Pann is located behind the Chongro Fire Station (종로소 방서) and next to the Daegu Chongro Elementary School (대구종로초등학교); which is only about a 10 min walk from the CGV Lotte Young Plaza. If you are looking at the fire station, glance over to your left and you’ll see this cute little alley. Peer down that alley and there you will see Pann’s three traditional Korean/Japanese buildings.

amazing natural acoustics. So, she renovated the garage into an elegant and relaxing restaurant just a few months ago. The atmosphere is one of relaxing Jazz music, dim lights, and a beautiful scenery of the traditional Korean style guest house. The top floor is a cozy and intimate level of tables for four people. Also, there are two rooms for a more intimate and personal dining experience: one is for about four to eight people, and the other is for about a much larger group. The first floor offers a more family style dining experience. She plans on having Jazz musicians come on Saturday nights starting this month.

When first walking into Pann, we were greeted by Mia (Sohn Mi Sook - 손미숙), the owner. She had lived in San Francisco for seven years, so her English was great. Her idea for Pann was to create a guest house at first. However, when she saw the high ceilings of the large 1920’s Japanese garage, her plans change. She envisioned live Jazz music being played due to the

grown in the garden on the premises, which means that the menu changes seasonally. Because of this organic menu, they serve a freshly squeezed grape juice that was so delicious; just grapes and water, not even close to your store bought grape juice. Pann’s organic and seasonal menu includes appetizers, main dishes, pasta, and pizza. The most popular appetizer is the Steamed Clams (8,000\) and the Prosciutto Baguette (18,000\).

As for the pasta dishes, they have Anchovy Oil Pasta (12,000\), Tomato Mushroom Pasta (13,000\), and Crab Cream Pasta (15,000\). The main dishes are a bit more eclectic; Shepard’s Pie (17,000\), Italian Style Pork (24,000\), and Steamed Pork (27,000\). They also have a simple variety of pizzas: Margherita Pizza (12,000\), Mushroom Pizza (13,000\), and Prosciutto Pizza (15,000\). -continued on p32-

We got to enjoy three items from the menu: Shepard’s Pie (쉐퍼드 파이), Italian Style Pork (돼지 오소부코), and Pollack Roe Pasta (명란 오일 파스타). The Shepard’s Pie was tasty, but not exactly like mom used to make, since it is modified for Koreans’ taste. The potatoes were cooked just right and the meat was more of a meat sauce for pasta, but nonetheless, it was still delicious. The Italian Style Pork is a two day process to make. They marinate it for one day in wine and other seasonings, and then slowly cook it to its tender perfection. We were all shocked at how large the portion was for this dish! It’s a whole pig’s leg on one plate, with a side of creamy, buttery mashed potatoes to soak up the juices from the tender pulled pork pieces. The third meal might not be that popular among foreigners, however, it is an up-and-coming rising star in the Korean pasta world. The spaghetti pasta is made with zucchini, eggplant, rucola, dried red peppers, and the roe (pollock fish eggs). So, if you like fish, then you’ll like this one! The closing to this meal was the best part of the meal: a white wine and honey slush with a sprig of fresh mint on top.

Just a quick note about the noteworthy guest house; it is separated into two styles - one being the traditional Korean style and the other being a dormitory style. The Korean style guest house will cost you 60,000\ per night for two people on the weekdays, and 80,000\ on the weekends. Each room is based on a double occupancy, but you can add another person for an extra 10,000\. The dormitory is split into two large rooms; one for men and one for women. Each bed will cost you 25,000\ per night. Included in the price for both styles is a breakfast, which consists of breads, juice, and coffee. So to sum it all up for you, if you’re looking for a romantic place nestled in the back streets of downtown, Pann is a great place to try out. With its vintage French chairs, Japanese influences, and Korean hospitality, Mia and Jang Soo will provide a great dining experience for you and your guest. Keep a watch out for the changing menu, BBQ parties in the courtyard, and Jazz musicians from Seoul in the months to come! Or, stop by and spend the night in their Korean traditional guest house for a break away from modern life.

The Arirang Mass Games Rungrado May Day Arena Pyongyang, North Korea Written and photographed by Kenneth Quillinan

Imagine the greatest show you have ever attended; a jaw-dropping performance filled with inspirational entertainers/artists containing special effects that seemed near impossible to perfect. I think it is fair to say we have all had an experience like this at some stage and I am no different. The only difference now being that once you witness The Arirang Mass

Games, all other shows you have attended previously come nowhere near the feeling of overpowering satisfaction that this show leaves you with. Before attending The Mass Games, I had an inkling of what to expect with the help of some YouTube videos of last year’s performance; well I thought I knew what was in store.

As we entered the Rungrado May Day Arena, (the largest all-seater stadium in the world holding 150,000), the atmosphere was already high above anything I had imagined and it was still thirty minutes before the show began. In the backdrop of the stadium, directly across from us was a group of 20,000 school children, consistently screaming and shouting, but this was nothing in comparison to the main reason why they were all bunched together. Every child had their own personal book of flashcards that they expertly flipped through in choreographed movements, to produce a series of stadium-sized murals, that went in line with the progressive story the performance portrayed. This alone was one of the most impressive sights I have ever witnessed. -continued on p36-

On top of the 20,000 school children, there was a mere 80,000 performers that took centre stage over a 90 minute period. Every participant in the show was exceptionally well trained; whether they were dancing, marching

or performing mass calisthenics to the beat of dramatic music, it was all choreographed and executed to perfection.

The show as a whole, celebrates the history of North Korea, from a North Korean perspective. There is an endless amount of praise for former leaders, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il throughout the 90 minutes. On top of this, it is clear to see from this show that the North Korean mil-

itary and the Workers' Party of Korea (the ruling political party), are also held in high regard by the North Korean people, whether they like it or not it seems.

The Arirang Mass Games usually runs on a daily basis over a five week period starting on August 1stevery year. If you plan on visiting North Korea at any stage, do it during this time period. There is a reason why this show is in The Guinness Book of World Records, but you have to see it to truly believe it.

I Like Many Records: Festival #1 Lo-Fi Gigs for a Hi-Fi Community

Written by Ali Safavi / Photos submitted by I Like Many Records: Festival#1 / Translated by Yujeong Lee

It all started around about the time I went to University. Some friends from a band in my home town wanted to play a show outside of it, to meet a new audience and sell some CDR copies of their debut EP. Over the next four years I put on 12 more gigs (shows, Americans), they got bigger, more elaborate. They turned into alldayers, they included cake stalls, pizza stands, live artists and multiple stages. Every time I would tell myself “never again” and then five months later...

These basic lo-fi gigs are great for creating small brief communities. And it’s lovely to see your friends, who may have never met, getting acquainted at your shows and then going off to form their own bands, or start record labels, or write fanzines or start socialist protest movements (really).

Daegu Community - I Like Many Records: Festival #1

‘I Like Many Records’ is an extension of that purpose. However this time the goal is to bring together two cultures and help out the local community at the same time. ‘I Like Many Records’는 그러한 목적들의 연장선에 있다. Generally foreigners and Koreans in this city don’t go to each others’ shows (in the past I’ve been the only Asian not working at a foreigner show and the only foreigner at a Korean show). Why are these two groups, who both obviously like good music, so separate? Music has no language barriers, maaaan....

The first I Like Many Records festival will be held at Jeng-iY bar (‘that Jimi Hendrix bar’ to most) on Saturday October 12th. The day will be a celebration of good music in Daegu (plus a few friends from other towns) that will, I hope, bring together both the Korean and foreign music lovers in this town. We will also endeavour to raise a lot of money for three worthwhile charities in the city: 첫번째 I Like Many Records 공연은 10월 12일 토 요일 쟁이(대개 ‘지미 헨드릭스 바’라고 알려져 있는 곳)에서 열린다.

Bangkok By Night Clubbing in the City of Squala! Written and photographed by Scott McLaughlin

Holla! City of Squala! (Mr. Chow: Hangover 2) For those that have seen this movie, you get the idea. Bangkok is a massive city associated with "Happy Endings," "Ping Pong Shows," "Go Go Girls" and other forms of lustful entertainment. People often forget this city is one of Asia's top commercial cities with big businesses, tourism and an awesome party scene. This tale involves partying in the Sukhumvit area, specifically Soi 11. Soi 11 is just outside of BTS Nana Station (Bangkok's Monorail system). During the day, it is full of tourists coming and going to the many hotels on the Soi. At night, it morphs into a hedonistic adult playground. There are rooftop bars, open air pubs, live music clubs, glitzy nightclubs and after hour parties to stumble out of at the break of dawn. Sound familiar to Korea? This Soi boasts clubs with names like BASH, Q Bar, Nest, Climax and Levels. The night starts out at Nest Lounge and Bar

around 9pm, a great open air rooftop bar with a relaxed and friendly vibe. I meet Michael Lin, General Manager for Nest. There are comfortable sofas and large tables to support groups. On this particular night, there is a 90's throwback party complete with a live band with a DJ and MC. Pretty awesome way to start the night. From here, the party people get their swag on at Q Bar. Q Bar is a staple of Soi 11. There are multiple rooms and levels. This place packs it in every night. International DJ acts routinely make this place bumping from 11pm-2am. As you exit the club, you are given a wristband to enter into BASH. Right down the street, this is the place to be from 2am-6am. I am fortunate to have met Benjamin Baskins, Sales and Marketing Director for Eclipse Group, . Eclipse Group runs bars and clubs all over Thailand. On Soi 11, they operate Australian Pub and Bar, BASH afterhours nightclub and Q Bar. I enter

into a special night, where there are body painted models, performers swinging from the rafters, and a little person to guide you up in an elevator. This is a great place to meet some interesting party owls. Whether you are alone or with friends, Soi 11 is your one stop clubbing block. As for rules, dress smart, no sandals or shorts, and be prepared to either come in with a heavy wallet or a few drinks under your belt, depending on your budget. Most drinks cost 200 baht, which is kind of pricey, but remember, Bangkok is an international city. There are other Soi's like the RCA, Khaosan and Ekamai that also boast some fantastic party nights. But since I had one night in BKK, I couldn't have chosen a better spot. It's 6am, luckily the Grand President hotel is right across the street. My feet are beat, ear drums are ringing and I can't wait to check out the pics from one amazing night.

Night of the Living Dead The Daegu Theatre Troupe

Written and photographed by Michael Randall / Translated by Yujeong Lee

The Daegu Theatre troupe will be producing a staged adaptation of George A. Romero's 'Night of the Living Dead'. The original screenplay premiered in 1968 and eventually became a cult classic inspiring spoofs and sequels for many years after. Inspired by Richard Matheson's “I Am Legend” Romero wrote the script and hoped that it would be an “earth shaking change'. The story follows characters Ben, Barbra, and five others trapped in a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania which is attacked by unnamed "living dead" monsters which later became known in popular culture as zombies.

Director Michael Randall has taken the script which was put into public domain in 1968 after an error was made by the distributor and adapted it for the stage. Although the heart of the story remains the same, Randall took liberties in updating the language and giving some characters, specifically the women, stronger voice.

“I wanted something that was forever, something that was really at the heart of it. I said, so what if the dead stop staying dead?... And the stories are about how people respond or fail to respond to this. That's really all [the zombies] ever represented to me.” said Romero.

"대본의 원작에는 멋진 요소들이 가득하지만 꽤 오래된 내용이고, 몇몇 등장인물은 오늘날의 사회를 정확하게 반 영하기 위해 변화가 필요했다. 이번 공연은 현대를 배경 으로 하며, 영화 달리 액션요소가 커졌고 선혈이 더 낭자 할 것이다.”

“The original script is full of great bits, but it is quite dated and some of the characters needed to be changed in order to accurately represent our society today. The play will be set in modern times and unlike the film, the action will be bigger and bloodier.”

After a year which saw the theatre troupe produce their first original work in 'Baggage Claim', a West End hit in 'Cock' and fantasy classic in 'The Princess Bride', the adaptation of 'Night of the Living Dead' will be the final full length production of the 2013 season. “It's been an amazing year and we wanted to go out with a bang. We thought that this show would be the perfect way to do just that.” For those who want an up close look at all the action will be encouraged to sit in designated “Splatter Zones”. Other special surprises are in the works as the troupe hopes to add to the legacy of this cult classic.

The show which will be the troupe's biggest production to date will be held at the Play Onnuri Theatre on October 26 and 27. Volunteer and Save a Life KAPS an Animal Safe Haven Written and photographed by Emma Thompson

The Korean Animal Protection Society (KAPS) is a charity based in Daegu. The charity was founded in 1982 by our founder Sunnan Kum and is run today by her daughter Sue. The charity has two shelters, one for cats and one for dogs, both are based at the red line’s Daemyoung Subway Station. KAPS has changed significantly in relation to foreigners in recent years, it now has excellent volunteering opportunities for those willing to donate some time. Volunteering is a great way to get more from your time in Korea, it helps you meet new people, develop excellent transferable skills and looks great on your resume. Each month in the Spring and Autumn seasons KAPS holds a dog walk. These events, posted monthly on our Facebook page, enable anyone to pop into the shelter for the afternoon and walk a dog. This means you can enjoy a pet for the day and our dogs get out of the shelter and have some fresh air, love and exercise. Many of our cats have had bad experiences with people since traditionally they are not seen in a positive light here, although slowly Koreans are starting to enjoy keeping cats as pets. Our cats have a huge mixture of personalities, breeds, and ages, which makes every visit fun. KAPS has been rescuing dogs and cats from Daegu streets for years, but that’s not our only focus. KAPS

also works to educate and increase awareness about ending dog meat consumption, pet care, and training. Owning a pet is a fairly new part of Korean culture, and although many Korean pets are adored, they are not necessarily understood. This can cause some behavioural difficulties, which sadly sometimes ends in the animals being turned out. KAPS is working to prevent this by educating the public online and at Daegu events. For those who really want to make a difference there are positions opening on the KAPS team that really enable you to get involved. You can organize fundraising events, take part in our monthly bake sale and raise funds for KAPS animals, you can help our dogs and cats find new homes by getting involved with our foster and adoption programs, or you can spread the word by helping out in our publishing division, designing posters, flyers, and T-shirts. If you are competent in Korean and English languages we are always looking for people to help liaise between the foreign volunteers and our increasing numbers of Korean volunteers. We are always looking for people to foster our many cats and dogs in need. This is a great way to have multiple pets whilst in Korea without the lifetime commitment and with the amazing reward of knowing what a life changing difference you have made to the lives of the animals you

foster. We have several long term KAPS residents, like Happy, who really don’t stand a chance of getting a home without being fostered first so it really is a life changing experience for them. Alternatively if you feel like you are ready for that lifetime commitment we would love for you to consider a KAPS cat or dog for your forever friend. Our process involves an application form and follow up questions and you can adopt from the shelter or a foster home. We assist you in any way we can and ensure you are well prepared to bring your pet back to your home country when you are ready. For more information on all these opportunities visit us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/KAPSAnimals or on our website at www.koreananimals.net. We look forward to helping you get involved.

Since 2001, Toronto-native indietronic darling Shaw-Han Liem, has been releasing some of the most beautifully organic ambient albums under his stage moniker I am Robot and Proud (IaRaP). IaRaP ‘s signature sound of meticulously arranged electropop melodies have earned him tours with bands such as The Constantines, Printed Circuit, Marumari, Ariel Pink, and The Unicorns. The audio coloration of IaRaP ‘s works, always bright, uplifting, and styled with uptempo beats, also flow with real human sentiments and emotions with details lurking beneath its primary-color laden glossy surface. The songs are intricate but ultimately feel lighter and lighter to the listen, ultimately pulling some of the weight off their sneaker and carrying them an inch or two into the air. A regular figure in the indie scene, having worked with Shugo Tokumaru, Lullatone, and Oorutaichi among others, IaRaP also works in the innovative sound field. Re-

SHIGETO (Ghostly International) is the solo project of a Detroit-based musician/producer, Zachary Saginaw. It’s his middle name and also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. SHIGETO means, as he says, “First to cross over, as in first born, and to increase in size, or to grow larger.” He was born nine weeks premature, weight less than a pound. Cool shades of ambient music, stuttering early IDM, dubstep sub-bass, and jazz melodicism color SHIGETO’s palette, which he wields with a painterly attention to detail. Likewise, his live performance is a melding of live drumming with electronics. While Zach’s body of work has grown over

Getting Past the White Tiger gettingpastthewhitetiger.blogspot.kr Written by Ashley Guerrero and Leif Nordholm / Photos by Young-Gun Park

The theme of this year's Burning Man festival in Korea (KoreaBurn) was FLOW. The contributors to the expat blog, gettingpastthewhitetiger.blogspot. kr, traveled there with Sea-saw Shisha by the Sea Shore, an exhibition for inhaling the good times, exhaling the bad vibes, and keeping it all in balance. Our group's theme camp was a giant chill out tent with hookas generously supplied by Aladdin's Lamb and a homemade see-saw called stable enough. Before we get into the event itself let's look at some background info on the event. KoreaBurn is a spin off event of Burning Man held in Nevada. The Burn is new in Korea, but from what I understand, it has been greatly improved. Both Burning Man and KoreaBurn follow these ten principles:

KoreaBurn is a transformative festival. There we can learn about what is possible in a cooperative society. Honestly, I believe we should live our lives in this way, and with such a supportive community at KoreaBurn it was easy to get lost in the freedom, acceptance, and love everyone had. If you're new to the Burn you can bang the traditional gong and hear the words, "Welcome Home" Those words couldn't have been truer. Now for the event. I have to recollect my thoughts on this one. I remember seeing jellyfish people, shoe jousting, a wandering mystic offering salvation, a pen full of upright-walking, talking animals and a giant creature with one big eye who I called a cyclops, but he corrected me, "Ahem, I am an observer."

see-saw shisha action. DJ Tek stayed awake for the whole weekend. The rest of us, however, found a little time for sleep. But I've left out the best part: the BURN! At night the poi dancers were out in full force and this year's burning man had a sweet design. The man was comprised of one statue with its arms up and another with its arms down. It was obliterated much more quickly than last year's. We were even able to do our own burn! When the mural was being incinerated, we added the seesaw to the mix. With the man we burn all that which is keeping us down, and keeping us from loving ourselves, each other and the world we live in. Happy burn, Korea!

We had a solid group: eight teachers, a multimedia pro and a DJ. We rolled in and set up camp right before a massive deluge swept through. That's right. We got SOAKED. In the afternoon, however, and for the rest of the weekend, we enjoyed sun, fun and some serious

A Weekend of Art Living Body Art! Written by Gary Lynn / Photos by Kimberly Smith

To close out our summer in Daegu, we enjoyed one of its annual events, the International Body Painting Festival 2013. This year was quite different from years past. Yes, the event was over a two day weekend and held at Duryu Park, in downtown Daegu. However, unlike years past there wasn’t any live entertainment during the day prior to the models going on stage. Also, the number of competitors from around the world seemed to be less. There were people from Finland, South

Korea, China, Japan, Hungry, Uzbekistan, Netherlands and the USA, also a few other nations but not as many as last year. Unlike last year, the weather was much nicer than the year before. The competition was in two areas: costume and total body art. The competitors for the costume division had a time limit to get ready before they were judged on Saturday. Although the full body art competitors were painted, they weren’t judged until Sunday. On Saturday, only a total of six comhttp://daegucompass.com

sion by far had the most impressive art this weekend. We all had a good time and enjoyed the shows. Looking forward to next year.

The total body art took more time and I was especially impressed by the entry from the United States, Fray Scott. They were returning for a third year. He and his wife really enjoy Daegu and love being invited every year. The crowd really reacted to Mr. Scott’s model (who is American) when she spoke Korean, right before they left the stage. Personally, I like this year’s entries as opposed to the last years. I just love all those eyes in front and back. That being said, I think that the show has to go to the costume division. These guys stole the show. There were competitors that had wings with an eight foot span; another had an owl headdress along with matching wings. Some really COOL stuff! The costume divi-

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Next, swing by the minature golf course and Suseong Land. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Indo Bang Rangi

- 3F Restaurant

Sanjay welcomes you! Renovated and redesigned last year, this Indian restaurant is famous for it’s curries. The chef is from India and speaks English very well. Plus, he’s super friendly and will answer all your existential Indian food questions. The restaurant is located on the 3rd floor right across from Kyungdae Buk Moon (north gate). Check the Kyungdae Compass map on p64 for directions. 11am - 10pm everyday (except major holidays)

Nepalese/Indian

Maya

- 2F Restaurant

A wood-fired tandoor oven seeps into your senses as you enter the door to this fantastic Indian/Nepali restaurant. Relatively new to Daegu, about 2 years old now, this restaurant is a great escape from the retro-urban decor that most Daegu restaurants display. A cozy interior with exotic tapestries of the far east adorning the walls. Reasonable prices and great Thali sets round out this establishment. Check the Kyungdae Compass map on p64 for directions. 11:00am to 11:00pm everyday (closed Mondays)
