LIBERATING HER STORIES
The House of Sharing is both a museum and home to former “Comfort Women” - survivors of sexual slavery at the hands of the Japanese military during the Asia-Pacific War (1932-1945). The House of Sharing is the world’s first human rights museum centred on the theme of sexual slavery. The museum opened on August 14th, 1998 to record Japanese war crimes, to restore the honor of the victims and to function as a place of historical education. ~www.houseofsharing.org
한풀이: Liberating Her Stories Interview by Scott McLaughlin / Photos by Greg Laychak
There are so many causes out there in the world today. Some people make it a habit of joining a cause without ever really understanding what it represents or means. Then there are the truly special people who embrace the opportunity to be part of something special and significant. Devoting much of their time to understanding and then sharing the message with others. I had the priviledge
of meeting and interviewing one such individual. A fellow photographer and artist, Greg Laychak. He is participating in an art exhibition in Seoul that will take place from December 10 -16th. Alongside other artists, the images depict the ongoing struggle to raise awareness for the surviving “Comfort Women” of the Japanese military occupation during the Asia-Pacific War.
Also, the exhibition will highlight international artists who are also working to end human trafficking, sexual slavery and violence against women. Greg lives in Daegu and has been honing his craft for many years. If you are planning a trip up to Seoul for some holiday shopping, be sure to check out the exhibition. Here are some sample photos. Thanks Greg, keep up the good work!
How did you get invovled in the project?
invited me to the funeral of Kim Sun Ak, a former sex slave of the Japanese army, I learned how few of these women were left, and importantly, how quickly they were passing away. At the time, Kim Sun Ak left 87 registered women in South Korea who had shared a similar fate. Now, almost two years later, fewer than 70 remain alive. In Kyeongsangbuk-do that number went from 11 to seven in the same time period. I began meeting with them, researching their histories (both personal and in a larger historical context), and
photographing them.
In December 2009, I met six of the eleven registered former Japanese “comfort women” of North Kyeongsang Province, South Korea at a fundraiser held in their honor. I was there because I was interested in finding a way to photograph their stories, but I had no access and only a vague idea of how to visually represent the issue. In the new year, the Daegu Citizen’s Forum (an organization representing the victim-survivors) 6
What did you learn during the project that you didn’t know before? I found that while their personal tragic histories are well documented, there is little material about how they are living today. The victim-survivors themselves seem to have been lost in the collective memory, which is one of a few ethno-nationalist tools being used in an ongoing political battle against Japan. I also became interested in
LIBERATING HER STORIES
the theme of identity as it relates to the former “comfort women. It’s arguable that many victimsurvivors have never had claim over their own identities. Poor, unmarried daughters in Korea during the occupation had no social standing (and were even sold by their parents in many cases). As sexual slaves, their identity was again stripped away. Upon their return home they were forced to hide the pain of their experience or be shamed again in their own
society. And now, finally, as their cause is taken up by the Korean activist-machine, their identities are being lost in a nationalist narrative against Japan. My work tries to reflect this by eliminating faces, with one exception: a picture of a victim-survivor dressed in a hanbok looking in a mirror and a small Korean flag barely noticeable in the corner. The picture is my favorite because it summarizes the message of Fading Voices in a single frame.
Since this is an issue many older women still have to live with, how did you approach them to make them feel comfortable while taking their pictures? With some subjects it takes a long time to get them to feel comfortable, others not so long. The halmeoni were no exception. Some warmed up to me quickly, others to my partner who was also a big part of the project. A major factor was that I took three

months meeting and talking with most of the halmeoni before taking any pictures. They saw that I was not just taking their pictures and running, so they were very accepting of our presence. That
said, I couldn’t have gained any one’s trust without the help of the Daegu Citizen’s Forum. They committed a lot of time to introducing us and guiding our access to the women.

Call for Artists for the House of Sharing’s Art Exhibition
LIBERATING HER STORIES The House of Sharing’s International Outreach Team works to raise awareness of the issue of Japanese military sexual slavery and to support the survivors in their on-going struggle for historical reconciliation and justice. The team is composed of both foreign and local volunteers who lead English tours at the House of Sharing and works to highlight the continuing crimes against humanity in the form of sexual violence during war that women and children across the world continue to experience. The multi-media art exhibition, “ 한풀이: Liberating Her Stories” will be held at Café Anthracite lo-
cated near Sangsu Station (line 6) from December 10, 2011 through December 16, 2011. This is an opportunity for both the Korean and International communities to further engage with the ‘Comfort women’ issue and to support the continuing fight for justice. Throughout the exhibition visitors will be able to attend film screenings and workshops dealing with issues of sexual slavery, human trafficking, and violence towards women. This week also coincides with 1,000 consecutive Wednesday Protest by surviving “Comfort Women” and their supporters that has been held in front of the Japanese Embassy since 1992.
The gravity of the survivors’ experiences as well as their continued fight for justice are not often easy to capture and respond to in simple words. We believe that art, in all its myriad forms, can provide multiple channels through which to express not only the personal narratives of the survivors and emotional responses of those hearing these, but also form expressions of protest against these horrific crimes. We hope that art can be a vehicle that will inform and educate as well as stimulate people into taking action in support of this cause.

PALGONG-SAN
By Whitney Dalton
It’s already December, the year’s end is fast approaching. Before it gets too cold to even step outside, why not take one last trip up Palgong Mountain to take in the beauty of our surroundings and think about the year to come and what adventures it may bring.
Mt. Palgong is a quick getaway filled with activities for families, couples, friends, or the solo hiker. The cable car can take you right to the top of this mountain for the best view of the city and access to a peaceful bit of nature, hard to find in the hustle and bustle of the year’s busiest season. The cable car itself is seven minutes long each way and costs 8,000W round trip for an adult or 5,000W for a child. If you only want a one-way ticket (as some people choose to hike up or down) it’s 5,000W adult price or 3,000W child. You
10
buy your tickets at the cable car station, where you can also pick up souvenirs or snacks. Souvenirs include traditional Korean jewelry boxes, key-chains with norigae (노리개- a Korean accessory typically worn on hanboks), pencil cases, and toys for children.
Typically on the weekends, especially in the popular months like October, November, March, and April, you can expect a long line to get on and off the cable car. It’s not too long though, maybe ten minutes to board, and then you’re off! Hopefully you can go on a clear day, without fog, and then you can see all of Daegu at your feet. I’m definitely thinking about going
Photos by Ivan Broida
on a snowy day, I’m sure the sight would be breath-taking and the cable car remains open during the snowy weather. Regardless of when you go, the scene is still amazing. Being up so high with the wind blowing around you and the tops of trees at your feet, it really makes you feel like you’re on top of the world. Make sure you’ve bundled up, and I do mean scarves, woolen hats, jackets, and layers, layers, layers because as soon as you step off the cable car you’ll notice the temperature has dropped a few degrees during the ascent. Visitors can check out the view through the binocular telescopes located around the first level. From here, the trails branch off to two different areas, the first being “Love Road.” Get yourself a set of lock and keys at the Mountain Blue restaurant (first level) for
PALGONG-SAN around 3,000W and prove your love to the Guardian Tiger. Stick your hands in his stone mouth and throw the keys into his belly, if your love is true… he won’t bite your hand off! Then take the lock and choose one of the love stations along the way to lock away a symbol of your relationship. Along the trail, there are many benches off the beaten path to rest and share a cup of hot chocolate or coffee. There is also a large wooden pavilion at the end of “Love Road” in case you want to share a picnic with your loved ones. For those seeking a little more adventure, take the second route. The “Mountain Shower Road” is
a thirty minute hike rumored to cleanse your soul with a shower of fresh air and energy from the many trees in the area. Thirty minutes was a little too long a trip for me, so you’ll have to feel this one out for yourself.
After all the walking in the blistery cold, many people head to Mountain Blue, a two-level restaurant located where you exited the cable cars. This restaurant has the honor of being the highest altitude restaurant in Daegu, but don’t worry the prices aren’t that high. Typically tourist spots are known for heavily upping their prices, but not so at Mountain Blue. The menu is large with many choices including traditional Korean dishes like dolsot bibimbap (8,000W 돌솥비빔밥 a mixed vegetables and hot rice dish) or western dishes like pizza and spaghetti.
We tried the bibimbap, made with fresh vegetables grown in the mountains, and their popular anju (안주 dishes eaten with alcoholic drinks) 삼겹두부김치 (sam-gyeop-doo-boo-kimchi 10,000W) a delicious dish with
soft tofu, rich kimchi and strips of pork belly. They also serve alcohol at Mountain Blue, although it’s not recommended to drink too much due to the dangers of being on a mountaintop. Their rice wine “dong dong ju” (5,000W 동동주) is similar to makeolli but with a fresher taste and they make their own alcohol from the fruit of the Chinese evergreen tree. So if you’re wanting to make the trip up to Palgong Mountain, remember that it’s getting colder so bundle up and wear a pair of solid sneakers. The last tickets are sold at 5:10 p.m. but the cable cars run for some time after that. Parking is free if you get there early, but if it’s packed you have to park next door at the hotel for 3,000W.

CHAMPS BAR REVIEW
By: Ivan Broida
Photos by: Ivan Broida
Vintage black and white photos, screens everywhere, and sport jerseys on the wall welcome you to Champs, one of the newest bars in the downtown area, just across from Greeks. Of course, if you are looking for more traditional bar activities like darts, foosball tables and air hockey, you will also find them here. And you can drink as much as you usually do without it hurting your wallet, since Champs has “the lowest prices in the downtown area,” according to the managers of the pub. Champs is a sports bar so on Tuesdays they play NFL and NHL games on the dozen or so screens that fill the place. They also have a lot of concert DVDs so, whenever
14
a game is not on, they will take your requests. And on Fridays, starting at 5pm, the mike opens up for anyone who wishes to perform. Also on Fridays, from 10pm on the mike belongs to DJ Justin who plays his latest mixes. Do you have a band but can’t find a good place to practice? The guys over at Champs like the noise and are willing to let you use their drum set, keyboards and three amps while they are prepping the pub (usually between 2 and 5pm). Talk to the managers about reserving your spot. And then there’s the food. Champs recently started serving food and the menu is not as large as a regular restaurant’s but the
quality definitely makes up for the relative lack of options. You should definitely try the Jalapeño Poppers, a dish highly recommended by the chef. It is quite a simple dish: baconwrapped jalapeños filled with cream cheese and a hot chili sauce on the side. The crispy texture and fresh taste of the jalapeño blends well with the savoriness of the bacon and the softness of the cheese. The sauce just gives it that extra kick it needs to have it go from being a good dish to a great one. Another standout dish is the fish and chips. I’ve had fish and chips at other places but I have
CHAMPS BAR REVIEW never had a fish so meaty as the one I had at Champs. The generous serving of fish and heaping mound of chips are enough for one really hungry person or two slightly hungry people.
Jalapeno Poppers filled with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon make for a delicious and easy-to-eat bar food to accompany your beer. (Photo Courtesy: Ivan Broida)
I also tried the hamburger which comes with two cheeses, one being Reggiano which worked surprisingly well with the sweetness of the meat and the sauces. The meat was juicy and the buns are some of the best around (and they are an integral part of the burger). This dish also includes a large side of
homemade wedge fries. The chef made it a point to say that the ingredients are delivered fresh almost daily and the dishes are made from scratch. And don’t forget to ask for your free Champs membership card! It will save you 10% on anything and everything you buy at Champs.
ELYBADEN SPA
That’s SPAtastic! The Elybaden
facility in Sang-In is technically considered a “spa”, but after spending a day here it seems more like a giant, indoor amusement park. 23,000 Won will get you twelve hours of access to all the amenities in this huge, ultramodern complex. You can spend that time as leisurely or as balls-to-the- wall actively as you please. In either case, there is no way you will go home disappointed. Once you pay your entry fee you receive a locker key on a rubber bracelet. This bracelet will act as your wallet or pocketbook for the day. you purchase. Head to the locker room and get a set of comfortable pajamas (jimjilbok); other than a swimsuit, these are the only clothes you may wear inside Elybaden. Make your way to your assigned locker. Now it is time to decide: pool, or everything else? If you choose to go poolside first, then put on your swimsuit and follow the signs. A series of hallways will take you to a hangar-sized pool area. The main pool is a gigantic oval. Its entire circumference is appointed with different kinds of water massage gadgetry;one could spend the entire day swimming from station to station, enjoying the unique benefits of each. With just the press of a button, water
jets might blast your back, or a whirlpool of bubbles might erupt under your feet, nearly sending you airborne. Some stations are fashioned like underwater seats, so that if you hold yourself in place using the adjacent handles a combination of jets target different parts of your body.If you dare, you can test out the supercharged showerheads located across from the main entrance. If you find them too intense, you might still be able to sucker a friend into standing underneath one and then nail them. Swim through a small tunnel at the far side of the pool and you will find yourself outdoors. The water out here acts like a riptide and will carry you around a big, looped track. Trying to swim against the current is a fun
ELYBADEN SPA challenge and great exercise, but once you tire yourself out, being taken away by the “tide is a pleasant sensation. There are three hot tubs in the pool area. One is attached to the main pool, so that you can crawl into the comfortable heat without getting out. Another is up a small flight of stairs. This one is cool because you can look out over the whole spread while you relax. The third hot tub, which is heart shaped, is next to the kiddie pool. This area offers plenty of goodies too, like water slides, and a small obstacle course. As much fun as there is to be had in the pool, it accounts for less than half of what you can do at Spa Elybaden. Once you change into your jimjilbok, head up to third
floor and prepare to lose yourself in a sea of options. The main room has a lineup of state of the art massage chairs and tables. For 2,000 Won you can plop yourself down in one and spend fifteen minutes
in heaven. After that, you might consider grabbing a floor mat and lying down anywhere you please, either in the middle of the floor, or in a darkened tunnel for two, or in one of the three different continued on next page

There is also a stage where live music if performed in the evenings, along with a huge projection screen for karaoke. Also on the third floor are six separate saunas, all kept at different temperatures. They each have their own themes (for lack of a better word). One of the more interesting ones is the salt room, which is about 55 degrees Celsius, or 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The entire floor is covered with huge salt rocks which you can bury yourself in or throw at your friends while they try to unwind. If you want to push it to the limit, go to the teepee shaped sauna which is kept at a brutal 65 degrees Celsius (150 degrees Fahrenheit)! It goes without saying that you will be leaking sweat almost instantly. The third floor also has a food court. There is a noodle shop which has a nice array of ramyun and udon soups. There is a Chinese restaurant with all the standard fare like egg rolls and sweet and sour pork. If you want to keep it simple, then you can just go for fried chicken, kim-bap and beer. All the prices are fair; you won’t need to spend more than 10,000
ELYBADEN SPA Won on any individual meal. Surprisingly, there is also a decently sized movie theater in the same area as the food court and arcade. You can finish off your spa day with dinner and a movie without leaving the building! Spa Elybaden will blow your mind. With so much to do, there is no way not to have a blast. Whether you want to have a day to yourself, bring a date, or go with a bunch of your rowdy friends, good times are guaranteed. Don’t believe it? Then at least check out the Daegu Compass pool party which will be held there on December 17th. A bus will be leaving from Banwoldang exit 17 at 1pm and 2pm. The first 10 people to sign up at daegucompass.com/poolparty will get free entry, although donations are happily accepted. Happy Holidays The easiest way to get there is by car or taxi.
Art Beans, an art collective based in Daegu, is hosting an art show that will spotlight the postcard format. The idea was borrowed from the MINT Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia that hosts a similar show annually. The show was consistently a huge due to the simple dynamic of the object; the postcard format is both inviting and challenging because of its size. The small rectangle allows for artists to work quickly while constraining them to a measly 178mm x 128mm image. For artists that finds creating work a daunting task the small size is welcoming, while an artist that is comfortable working bigger is forced to get creative

Since its formation in March of last year Art Beans has been working to make art available to Daegu, both foreigners and natives alike. The group is comprised of 5 members: Rich Giles, Jess Hinshaw, Jin Hwang, Sarah Knight, and Ju Won. Each member brings a different element and talent to the group, making their shows dynamic and diverse. This show on Saturday, December 10th will be their 4th one, and their second invitational. They strive for their shows to be accessible, inclusive, and engaging.
The Postcard Show will be up for one night only. Beginning at 6pm, the wall will start out bare but will be covered by art by the end of the night. Works will be available for sale (if the artist chooses), making it a great way to get a handmade piece of art for relatively inexpensive. Visitors to the cafe on the night of the show will appreciate the casual feel; so many times art can feel stuffy and confusing, this show promises to be fun and comfortable. Who knows, you might even find a piece that you want to take home with you. Do you own any art made by an artist you know?
The spot that Art Beans has chosen is perfect for the show. The cafe is already known for hosting art from local artists, recently hosting the work of up and coming Daegu artist Sada. If you haven’t been to The Design Factory yet, the Postcard Show will give you the perfect opportunity to check it out. Boasting two floors with both upstairs and downstairs outdoor deck seating, The Design Factory is one of the better coffee shops

BEAUTYFULL KOREA A guide to Korea’s beauty scene

BanilaCo is the best place to go for highquality make-up. I recommend going here for eyeshadows and lipsticks with as much punch as Urban Decay or Makeup Forever.
3.
It’s Skin prides itself on being a dermatologist tested, clinical skin solution with alcohol free products. They specialize in skin products, especially for sensitive skin.
5. 4. 24
DHC, a Japanese skincare store with locations in Korea, the US, and England, concentrates on “age-defying” deep cleansing products. Their products are based on Spanish olive oil, simple yet effective.
The Saem has the best prices for everyday beauty products like blush for 5,000W or their best-seller: lip tint for only 4,000W. Check here first for all your basic needs.
Food Therapy! All of Skin Food’s products include a food as their main ingredient: avocado, fresh milk, honey. Basically any food meant to keep your body healthy can be directly applied to skin to maintain youthful beauty for ages.
6.
Innisfree promises an eco-friendly product. Their product design is clean and simple like their ingredients. They are currently promoting products from Korean island Jeju, using the volcano’s red clay properties.
BEAUTYFULL KOREA Moving to a new country also means leaving behind your favorite make-up stores. While you can always find the big name brands like MAC and Clinique at Department Stores across Korea, you’re going to be paying at least twice the amount you once did. If you’re looking to give your wallet a rest without giving up on quality, don’t worry. Korea’s best selling product is beauty and there are plenty of stores to go to. Here’s a brief description of some of them located on the main shopping strip downtown. Grab some friends and sample them all. Now’s the best time with all the pre-holiday sales, so go and get your beauty on!

Missha recently reinvented itself and is now geared towards the 25 and up ages. They specialize in “Time Revolution” skincare, to turn back the years.
The FaceShop has been around since 2003, and is one of the most trusted make-up and skincare brands in Korea. One of their most popular skincare product “Arsaint Eco-Therapy Extreme Moisture” uses bamboo extract instead of water. No watered-down products here.
This giant pink dollhouse may seem intimidating but don’t write it off as a little girl’s playhouse just yet. While it is aimed towards the early twenty-year-olds, this make-up store has quality products at reasonable prices.
10.
Nature Republic is relatively new on the Korean make-up scene but has since anchored itself as a fan favorite, selling quality products at dirt cheap prices! Their best-selling face cream, “Super Aqua Max” has won awards in Allure Beauty Magazine Korea and is only 10,950W.
11.
Tony Moly’s concept is chic, urban, stylish & modern. That may explain why many teenagers flock to this store. It’s prices are reasonable but their products have won many awards on popular Korean beauty show “Get It Beauty.”
12.
Shopping at Aritaum may actually break the bank, but because of it’s amazing products
needed to be added to the list. This multi-brand shop sells all the brands under the Amore Pacific umbrella including Laneige, Iope, and Mamonde. If you don’t want to spend all your cash on an unknown product, I recommend buyng one of their 1,000W face masks to get some samples.

In short—it’s a chic escape for a special night out, or when you just want to treat yourself to a luxurious evening. Relatively undiscovered, sensual and cozy, Jase offers a sultry décor with private booths and an intimate layout. In this elegant wonder, patrons can appreciate wine, liquors, beer and cocktails. Prices range from 10,000 won, for cocktails, to 50,000 won for a bottle of wine and upwards to 200,000won for liquor. As the prices are a little steep, this is a great gathering spot for groups, or pairs. I split a

terrific bottle of chardonnay with a friend, paying 25,000 won each, and our bottle was accompanied with delicious appetizers that paired nicely with the wine. Besides wine, Jase Lounge offers a nice selection of liquor, and a group of 5 could easily share a bottle at 20,000 won each, which is accompanied by a pre-selected tray of appetizers, juice, tonic and other little fixings. The food options offered are potatoes, cheese, salad, sausage, steak, fruit and more. In the words of the host, “the menu is England

Whether you want to vibe to some jazz with a bottle wine, or toast to the good life with your friends or treat a special someone to a plush date, this hidden gem is a great gathering spot for a decadent grown and sexy evening. Enjoy a cocktail at the sleek bar, or grab private booth and sip the night away—make it a celebration!

SOBAEKSAN AND DANYANG PARKS
Sobaeksan National Park and Danyang Written and photographed by Britney McSweeney / Translated by Jinil Kim
As much as I love trekking over Korea, wandering from one national park to the next, I know that somewhere, someone is reading my articles and getting exasperated. Some of my readers might be sick of the parks or even the hiking. I don’t blame you, because it wasn’t that long ago that I couldn’t be pulled - kicking and screaming - to a hiking trail. For these readers and for the sake of variety, I will detail Danyang’s paragliding and limestone caves.
Paragliding is a perfect mix: the initial rush and adrenaline slide gently into peacefully floating through the world around you. If you haven’t experienced it yet, Korea is a great place to try it. Not only are there plenty of stunning natural sights to see, but it is relatively cheap and going tandem requires no experience or training.

Dan Yang Club is a fantastic paragliding company. Located near to the national park, their course has a beautiful view (all the sights from hiking without any of the work!). In typical Korean fashion, their employees were kind, helpful, and did everything they could to work around the language barrier. It cost 80,000 won per person, and they even provided a free video camera to record the 5-6 minute trip Make a reservation by calling 010-9072-4555, though I suggest having tourist information confirm your appointment just in case. They picked us up straight from the Danyang bus terminal as soon as we called and told them we had arrived. As a bonus, they dropped us off at our next location - Gosu Cave. 단양클럽은 환상적인 패러글라이 딩 업체이다. 국립공원 근처에 위 치하여 아름다운 전경의 코스를 가 지고 있다. SOBAEKSAN AND DANYANG PARKS breaking through them - tiny roots destroying ancient rocks impress me. Needless to say, Gosu Donggul, a natural limestone cave, brought my appreciation to the next level. Although it isn’t exactly exploring uncharted territory, since there is a nice set path with staircases and guard rails, the cave is kept reasonably true to nature, because it lacks the florescent neon lights usually displayed in Korean caves. There are large caverns mixed in with narrow passages; it is a fairly long walk through its entirety. Some parts are labeled, be sure to look for the hokey names - from the Octopus Rock to the Fairies Bathing Pool.

As for the hiking, Sobaeksan does not disappoint. I elected to start from Huibangsa (accessible from Yeongju) and hike 3.5 km up to Yeohwabong. The course was not especially strenuous, excluding a 200 m stone staircase, and it could be completed in under 4 hours. If you’re looking for a longer trip, you can continue to Birobong, the tallest peak. The biggest draw for this course is that it passed by the largest inland waterfall in Korea. At 28 m high, the falls are memorable even in this dry season. An added bonus, there are little streams and rivers cutting through the beginning of the trail and several quaint bridges to scamper over. It truly is a picturesque place. 하이킹을 하기에도 소백산은 실망스 럽지 않다. 나는 (영주에서 가까운) 희방사에서 시작하여 연화봉으로 가 는 3.5km 코스를 꼽는다. 그 코스

Although my friends and I did all of this in one weekend, I am already considering a second trip in the spring. I am interested in checking out Danyang’s white water rafting, the remaining (though less famous) limestone caves, and the two fortresses. Furthermore, the sights are magnificent, and it’s a quick weekend trip to escape the hustle of Daegu. 비록 것을 봄에 나는

MUSIC IN MOTION
MUSIC in MOTION Written and photographed by Robert Williams
Daegu Capoeira Cooperative is a
group that took on its current form in the summer of 2010. Before that time, the group was under the direction and leadership of another instructor whom was very well-versed in Capoeira and was under the affilitation of a worldwide Capoeira organization. However that instructor moved to Seoul, and although I had only had a few months of training up until that time, Capoeira was something I was very interested in and not willing to give up. Although I have many years of experienced teaching Taekwondo and well versed in that art form, Capoeira was something that was almost completely new to me, so I was in no position to proclaim myself as a “teacher” of Capoeira, but rather simply share what I had learned with others while at the same time continuing my own exploration and improvement of Capoeira. As time went on, new members joined the Cooperative who had much more experience in Capoeira than myself, adding their knowledge to the group for the benefit of anyone who wished to learn and for the betterment of the local Daegu community. This is the whole purpose of our group, to simply share with others what we have learned, and to learn from each other. The first question many people have when either hearing about our group from a friend, or seeing an invitation to our group on one of the Daegu related facebook 32
pages is often “What is Capoeira?” This can be a tricky question because putting a label on Capoeira is nearly impossible. While it does have martial arts techniques, the goal of Capoeira training is not to learn to fight. While it does have a rhythmic pattern of movement, the goal also is not to dance. As one of our most senior member once said, “It is essentially a conversation of movement; where one partner “speaks” with “X” movement, and the other partner “replies” with “Y” movement. In the end, what we strive to do is play a ritualistic game with our group members in which we converse with various attacks,
evasions and escapes, while keeping with the rhythm of the music being played and expressed by the non-playing members. Sessions begin with a warm up and stretching before moving on to basics practice as a group. Once a good deal of time has been spent on reviewing past session material and basic movements, we move on to the lesson of the day and partner practice. All levels are mixed together so that everyone gets the chance to work with other participants and build a connection with the fellow group members. Toward the end, we all come together in the circle to play in a “roda” (game) which is the
MUSIC IN MOTION functions, outdoor Capoeira sessions and cookouts along the river, and most recently had an “open session” held at “Buy the Book” café in which perhaps 15 new people attended to get their first taste of Capoeira.
heart of the session and the point in which the spirit of Capoeira comes to light. While several members play the traditional musical instruments of Capoeira, and the rest form a circle and clap, we all sing the Capoeira songs together as two members enter the circle to play a game. This game is the “conversation” spoken of earlier, in which the players use what they have learned in past sessions as well as the session that day to either attack or evade the attacks of the opposing player. Although Capoeira uses kicks that could be dangerous, the goal is not to actually kick the partner, but rather to show that you could. In a way the game may be described as a game of “one upmanship”
Over the course of 18 months, our group has grown quite a bit, and boasts a rainbow of nationalities with members from Korea, Brazil, Latvia, United States, Canada, Japan, South Africa, Belize, Netherlands, Australia, China, Spain, Vietnam, and England all coming together twice a week to enjoy the spirit that Capoeira instills. This year we have had opportunities to have demonstrations at dance festivals, church
Anyone wishing to get involved with the Daegu Capoeira Cooperative may contact us through our facebook page. Class sessions are held each Wednesday at the Daegu YMCA from 7pm – 9pm, and Saturdays on the campus of Kyungpook National University from 11am – 1pm. All classes are, and will always be completely FREE. Nothing is required other than loose, comfortable clothing, and a willingness to explore something new. Whether you already have some idea of what Capoeira is and want to get involved, never heard of it before and are curious to give it a try, or otherwise simply want to mingle with a diverse group of people, all are welcome and encouraged to join us.
Capoeira can be a great exercise for the body building flexibility, mobility, strength, and stamina. However aside from the physical aspects of practicing Capoeira, most people enjoy the camaraderie of the group, the excitement of the game, and the spirit felt by the music.

PERFECT SMILE
Perfect Smile
By Dr. Sangdon Joo / Translated by Bosun Kim
Not having white and even teeth can make you smile awkwardly and lose your confidence, which may lead your personal relationship to be worsened. When you smile, bright and even teeth count for more than 70-80% of your first impression. In the past, straightening teeth was needed to have nice and even teeth. But it took a lot of time. With inconvenience of braces, there were many people who gave up the treatment.
To have even teeth, wearing braces for one or two years works for straightening teeth. But, recently laminate, which can make your teeth even just in two weeks, meets with a favorable response. With its one simple procedure, laminate can solve all your worries such as undersized teeth, broken teeth, teeth with the gap, or discolored teeth. Laminate is the procedure that an artificial tooth out of ceramic material is affixed to the tooth with problems after being trimmed a little bit. Putting an artificial tooth is just like putting an acrylic nail. Compared to having the tooth with the problems crowned which is an existing prosthetic supplement procedure, laminate has many merits. With laminate, your tooth will be trimmed less and have more natural color. The reaction with the gum after the procedure
is excellent as well. Also, lately CEREC laminate which uses CAD/CAM surpassing the weaknesses of existing laminate has higher durability and resistibility of fracture than the previous one. With a great deal of clinical experience and expertise on dental aesthetic procedures, Daegu Ye dental clinic will be the great choice for those who want to have the laminate procedure. In addition, Daegu Ye dental clinic is designated as the first national CEREC center and Dr. Sangdon Joo is the certified CEREC trainer who tries his best to make CEREC come into wide use. -Dr. Sangdon Joo from Daegu Ye Dental Clinic--대구예치과 주상 돈박사-
DISC GOLF
DISC GOLF Written by Gary Lynn / Photos submitted by The KPDGA
On the 22 of October in the city of Chun Cheon and on the island of Jung- Do the Korean National Disc Golf Championship was held. This is about four hours north of Daegu. There were kids as young as 10 - 12 years old being introduced to the sport. Well over 50 enjoyed playing and tossing disc for the first time. Many were inspired to continue learning more about the game. There were approximately 100 participants from across the nation, some from as far as Busan . There were even players from Japan. On this island resort, men and women played 18 holes ( or pins ) which were along bike paths, tent lined camping grounds, over hill and though trees. The players were divided into five groups - men & women beginners ( using only one disc ), men & women amateur masters ( using more
than one disc), and pro. During the first round of 18, there was a pro or a master on each card that took score. Then a Korean lunch was served at the island restaurant , Bi Bim Bop ( a hot bowl with beef , rice & vegetables) . A great meal had by all. The second round started with players matched by score. Once the final round was completed, there was a distance competition. When it was all said and done, the players from Daegu had won five of the ten awards. Team Daegu won 1st & 2nd distance toss (pro) Eric Fitzsimons and James Pearson, 1st distance toss (amateur masters) Tom Kunneke , 3rd and 4th for the event (amateur master) Tom and Gary Lynn. We had fun and
made new friends. The KPDGA ( Korean Pro Disc Golf Assocition ) and Team Daegu are trying to get a permanent course here in Daegu.
To make Daegu a national host for the annual event and to have a sport for men, women and children that's local, affordable and fun for everyone. If interested in disc golf, please contact me at 19Garylynn63@gmail.com or anyone on Team Daegu would be happy to help get out there. Eric Fitzsimons and Tom Kunneke speak Korean and are on facebook. As well as Team Daegu. Our leader James Pearson is a relentless player. He will play rain or shine , even in the snow. He's very passionate about the game. Also a great ambassador for the sport of disc golf. Please show your support and tell your friends.

An Interview with Two Gallants:
New Sound, Places and Food. It was easy spotting the members of Two Gallants, Tyson Vogel and Adam Stephens. These long bearded foreigners don’t have the typical look of an English teacher or military personnel in Korea. Named after a James Joyce’s story in Dubliners, Two Gallants were able to unite a mixed crowd whom either already knew the band for their honest lyrics and bluesy folk sound, or simply came to experience music truly inspired by great literature. After being on hiatus for three

years, the best friends from San Francisco are back with a revamped sound that was the most natural movement for the maturing and changing band. The new album’s production had just been wrapped up prior to the East Asian tour, but details about its release (on Saddle Creek Records) are yet to be announced. One of the new songs, “Winter’s Youth,” begins with lyrics, “In the winter of your youth with a string tied around your tooth, your mother slammed the door, she’s gone forever more,” crooned by Tyson’s raspy voice. Their current sound seems to speak more in the realm of Americana rock, but the lyrics still remain inspired by life and lost love.
Was this an intentional transition or a natural process for the band? Tyson responded that, “maybe it was a little bit of both, I think that the time we spent doing a lot of different things, both taking a break. It helped us as individuals, as musicians to approach music to achieve what one can achieve.” Adam said, “We just focused on different stuff that kind of was already there on a different way.” This wasn’t a new sound, it was merely a band that has grown and lived through the same trivialities that life had to offer. Assuming that touring in East Asia isn’t common for any Western, English speaking band, what would a band want a non-English speaking concert attendee to get from their music? Adam jokes,

TWO GALLANTS “Our good looks.” Then continued, “I don’t know, but I think it does say a lot about a band if it can appeal to people that don’t understand the lyrics at all, but are moved by just by the sound. It’d be so awesome to appeal to a crowd universally even though they didn’t understand.” Tyson hoped, “that they feel the genuine intention we have for performing and playing especially the movement.” Many people probably wish that touring and traveling the world was their occupation, so one wonders, what is the best thing about touring? Adam said, “I feel really fortunate to be able to see the world and do something we really love through the process.” Tyson gave some insight on the life of a touring artist, “We don’t really tour for touring sake, but to be able to play shows every night, we constantly have to be on tour. It’s a mixed blessing because obviously you want to travel and see the world, but if your vocation is constantly taking you away from home and familiarity and people you know, it’s difficult. I’m not complaining. I think we’re pretty lucky.” Although they had only played one show in Cheonon the night prior, what advice did they have for other artists wanting to tour East Asia? The guys were exhausted because they had arrived the same day and were schedule to perform hours later after landing. The guys both agreed that the best advice was “don’t do Korean barbeque at 3 in the morning right after performing a show or schedule a show the same day of landing.” Tyson stated, “Yeah, it was really good, but we didn’t go to bed until 5 a.m.” Many people might say that eating Korean BBQ until 5 a.m. might be a rite of passage when visiting Korea. I hope the guys had a great time in Korea. More information about Two Gallants’ music, album releases, or tour dates can be found at http://www.twogallants. com/. DATE NIGHT
DATE NIGHT Written by Jennifer Sanasie
As we move from fall to winter and the nights get colder, old and new couples in Daegu are looking for places to snuggle up, get away from the cold, and have fun on their date nights. “I just moved to Daegu, I know where all the bars are, but I don’t know where the quieter , cooler places are, you know where you can just chill,” says Cindy Monit, an English teacher who moved to Daegu with her husband.
Although Daegu has a collection of unique, fun places to hang out in with friends, boyfriends and girlfriends, Rachael Brownell, says, it’s easy to see how people get stuck in a going out routine. “There have been so many nights when I find myself out at the typical foreigner bars, doing shots, because it’s cheap and easy.”
Venturing outside of your regular “going out routine,” is a lot easier than you think, and there are people in Daegu who are discovering fun new places to go on dates. The Romantic Date If you’re looking to go on a romantic first date, or bring a little romance in to your relationship, check out The Inventive Multi-
Cultural Space. This wine bar does romance to the max. Guests are seated in their own private well and can enjoy a bottle of wine from their great selection. Christopher Hodgson, a Hagwon teacher in Daegu, says this is his go to bar for romantic date nights. “It is so cozy, you sit in the well and stare up to see the opening of the well lined by candles.” The restaurant is lit only by candle light, and as the candles burn the wax overflows and drips down the brick walls to create a truly unique and intimate private space. This restaurant is creative and provides you with a tranquil get away in the heart of the city. It is located downtown in between Champs and Who’s Bob. On a cold night this is the perfect place to cuddle up with someone you love and have a glass of wine. The Smoker’s Date Are you a smoker? Are you dating a smoker? If you want to make a night out of getting your nicotine fix, and not end up smelling like smoke by the end, why not take continued on next page

The theme is very “Arabian Nights.” You can sit in a private booth, or at a table, the restaurant is very dimly lit, and the music provides an ambience comparable to no other atmosphere in Daegu. Next Stevie and her husband Ed, grab some bottles of soju and beer from the Family Mart and hit a DVD room. “I love to go to the DVD room with Ed, because it’s nice to get out of the house, and watch a movie on a nicer TV than we have at home,” Stevie says. She adds that DVD rooms are also a great place to watch Korean films, because the DVD room staff can turn on the English subtitles. After watching a movie, Stevie and Ed hit the many street food vendors that line the sidewalks across from the North Gate. (Depending on your
Dress warm for this one, and pack some snacks. If you’re feeling adventurous and it’s not a cold night, head up Apsan for a night hike. Pick a clear night, when the moon is bright, and expect the hike to take about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how fast you walk. The nights are not that cold yet, and there is no snow, so get this one in before it gets too cold. Walk up the mountain handin-hand, you will hear the leaves crunching under your feet, while you listen to the peaceful sounds of the mountain at night. The bottom and top of the mountain are lit, and if you have bad night vision, you may want to bring a flashlight. From the platform at the top of the mountain you can see the entire city, lit up! Enjoy the view of the city skyline, the moon and the stars.
HOLIDAY FAMILY
Holiday Family Written by Eric Gayle
I’m not a big fan of Christmas. Now, I’m not a ‘bah humbug’ type; I just don’t get too excited about commercialization, corporate greed, and children (or childish adults) getting their proverbial panties in a wad when they don’t get exactly what they want. Personally, I like Thanksgiving. Yes, it’s my favorite holiday. Thanksgiving is about nothing more than getting together with family and friends, eating and napping, perhaps playing some games, and overall, just relaxing. Last year, however, was the first year in I suppose 34 years that I was not able to spend with my family. I haven’t always been able to see them on Christmas, or even Christmas Eve. But, at least some time during the holidays, I would make my way from Austin to Houston and be with them for ‘holiday time’. I would make my regular visits to see my family, of course, but Christmas time
was still always special. My mom would be even more goofy and lively than normal. My dad always seems a little more playful. Everybody is (normally) in a nice mood. Well, I’m sure nobody wants to read about my family, so I will move on. For many people who come to Korea to teach English, it will be their first time away from family. Some people handle this differently than others. While it will be a time of celebration for some (yay, no family!), it will be a difficult time for others. For those who struggle with homesickness, it’s a good time of the year to evaluate where you are and what you have in your life. Korea has so many wonderful places to visit, and for those with longer vacations, it’s a good time to get away from Korea and see other marvelous Asian wonders. Some other fun activities include snowboarding and
taking a mountain hike. While it’s a little cold, the views from the mountains in the winter show the beautiful shape of the land, as well as a plethora of persevering evergreens. Some of the best Christmas activities, as I have found, are done with those closest to us. Since we define ‘family’, many of us learn to redefine the term while we’re in Korea. Last year, I celebrated with my close friends at my apartment with a gift exchange. A little juvenile, perhaps, but it was a lot of fun to be with those who are now considered family.
HOW TO PHOTOSHOP - CONTENT AWARE
Content Aware
Panorama Shot By Jimi Cusick
Ever since Adobe introduced Photoshop to the public back in the late 1980’s, photographers and graphic designers have been able to use the program to significantly cut down the time needed in post production of their photos and artwork. Simple shortcuts and an uncomplicated interface have allowed inexperienced users to quickly learn how to alter their images for the desired finished product. The newest version of Photoshop, CS5, has one of the most exciting and time-saving shortcuts the company has released to date. Named “Content-Aware,” this new feature allows the user to remove any unwanted objects from their photos in a fraction of the time it would take to do manually. Another useful application of the Content-Aware feature is that it can manufacture missing pieces of pictures. This works really well when piecing together a few pictures for a panorama shot. 1. Click FILE>Automate>Photomerge. Click browse and select all of the pictures you want to make up your panorama shot. Press Ok.
2. After a few minutes of working, Photoshop will piece together your photos into a panorama shot. You will notice that the picture is missing some edges and isn’t a perfect shape. My picture looked like this. Notice that I am missing a big piece of the sky. 3. Merge all of your photos together by clicking Layer -> Merge Layers. This will allow Photoshop to work on all of the pictures in the panorama at the same time. To select the area you want to fix Hold CTRL and click on your image in the thumbnail. After the image is selected, press Select-> Inverse and the missing parts of the picture will be highlighted. 42
HOW TO PHOTOSHOP - CONTENT AWARE 4. Click EDIT-> FILL or simply press SHIFT+F5. Under the section labeled Contents, use the scroll down menu to select the Content-aware feature. Under Blending, make sure that the mode is set to normal and the opacity is set to 100%. Press OK. 5. Content-Aware will look at the surrounding pieces of the picture and fill in the missing parts. Press CTRL+D to deselect the fixed area and look at the final product. You are finished.

CHRISTMAS IN KOREA
CHRISTMAS IN KOREA Written and photographed by Hannah Starner
Every Christmas I find myself wondering what to send to my family back home. Luckily, my parents aren't big on gift-giving, so they're never offended when they just get some Skype time and the promise of a good retirement home. Still, it's nice to send a little something every once in a while. But what? Here's a guide to what Daegu has to offer. Requirements: Cheap. You're going to have to pay for shipping, so don't over-spend on the gift itself. Light. Again, shipping. The lighter it is, the cheaper it is to send. Useful. This is negotiable. Non-perishable. Dduk is out. Dried squid is in! Remember, what you see on a weekly basis and consider “normal” will probably be unique and special to someone back

home. Think back to those first few months in Korea when everything was new and exciting. What caught your eye? Cellphone bling? Excellent. A giant hairbow? Perfect. A panda hat with mittens attached? Now we’re getting somewhere.
Chopsticks. After eating with metal chopsticks day after day, it’s easy to forget how beautiful they can be. Chopsticks of varying quality are available in everywhere, but for something really special, check out the tea shop near the main entrance to Seomun Market. A hand-carved pair cost around 7,000 won. For children back home, you can find training chopsticks decorated with cartoons at places like Homeplus and Daiso.
Socks. Korea has the world beat when it comes to socks. From The Simpsons to Barak Obama, you can find something for everyone. Couples socks are also a great way to share some Korean culture. To make the gift a little more special, buy something that has Korean on it, have a friend translate for you, and wrap the translation with each pair. You can find gems like “No Lovers symbolize the isstrength of ” Farting” and “This my gochu. their love by placing locks along the Daiso, HotTracks, and many other Pont des Arts, a custom which has © Hannah Starner stores carry socks, butathead to been imported to Korea places like Seoul's Namsan Tower and Daegu's Suseong Lake. CHRISTMAS IN KOREA sparkle and notebooks that can have some pretty interesting (or at least mangled) English sayings on them. HotTracks (under Kyobo downtown) offers one of the best selections of gifts in the city. While there are many items that appeal to children, teens, and young adults, there are also gifts for the older folks in our lives. Watches, wallets, and key chains are typical Christmas gifts, but sometimes it’s nice to go with the tried-and-true. Traditional Items. Pouches, bags, and pencil cases made of traditional fabrics are well-received at home. Check the gift shops at temples or Seomun Market (District 4, first floor, stall 722). © Hannah Starner
Sock Street (near the Seomun Market subway station) for some of the more raunchy varieties. Expect to pay about 1,000 per pair. A Mosquito Racket. The novelty of swinging a racket and zapping a mosquito lasts much longer than the batteries needed to use these miracles. While winter isn’t the easiest time to find them, a few are still around Seomun Market and bigger stores like Homeplus. Ask for 모기제로 (Mo-gi-jae-ro) while making a swinging motion, and someone is bound to point you in the right direction. They cost around 10,000 won. Beauty Products. Take advantage of the many cosmetic stores in Daegu when looking for gifts. Opt for brands that are hard to find back home, such as Skin Food and Innisfree. While both companies offer natural cosmetics and skin care products, Skin Food
includes directions in English on nearly all labels. At about 3,000 won, facemask sheets make great gifts since they are cheap, light, and not common in the West. Stationary, etc.. Pens, pencils, and other useful supplies are plentiful in Daegu. Korea’s stationary stores carry pens that
Snacks and Food. That ramyeon you ate for the 7th time this week might not be delicious to you, but to people back home, it’s exotic. Look for traditional snacks, shrimp flavored chips, or dried ddukboki. For your more adventurous relatives, pick up some dried squid or fish. Happy Shopping!

DODO MANSHOWN
By: Whitney Dalton Photos by: Scott McLaughlin
Located at the top of a hill, in a quaint area next to an elementary school, Dodo Manshown doesn’t look much like a restaurant. It looks more like a handsome twostory house. Actually, it was just that, until owner and chef Kim Do-Gwan remodeled the interior and turned it into a restaurant. Mr. Kim studied interior design in college and he’s outiftted the restaurant in Danish style. They completely took out the second story except for a small section used for the office, giving the restaurant a wide-open feel with a high ceiling. The trademarks in traditional Denmark houses are the old furniture pieces in a clean, airy environment. At DodoManshown you won’t find two chairs a like. Their old vintage style is quite charming. On each table you’ll find a clear vase with some sprigs of fresh flowers and when it’s warmer the patio doors are open for fresh air. You can also dine outside on the patio amidst the garden. True it is getting colder now, but the patio contains a huge
48
boiler to keep customers warm. The restaurant’s name “Dodo” means high-maintenance or arrogant in Korean. While you could probably bring a high maintenance significant other and they’d be quite satisfied, the name is sort of a misnomer. The restaurant and its two workers, Kim Do-Gwan and his girlfriend Ms. Choi, are inviting and warm. Maybe the suggestion lies in their sophisticated, high class menu. Mostly French and Italian items, Dodo Manshown serves food not typically found in simple cafe style restaurants in Korea. Yes, they have pizza and pasta but they also have stews and steamed mussels. And they use organic ingredients. Mr. Kim studied under a Le Cordon Bleu chef and his dishes are fantastic. His girlfriend Ms. Choi handles the drinks. Together, they make an unforgettable experiences you’ll want to tell all your friends about.
The first thing to arrive at your table in all Korean restaurants is a small pitcher of water. At Dodo, this pitcher contains a sprig of jasmine and is ice cold. I was pleasantly surprised right at the beginning of my meal. The taste reminded me of spring water in Maine, so clean you can almost taste the minerals and remarkably fresh. This was followed by appetizers. They had the regular Korean sweet pickles but the standout item were the slices of french baguette. Warmed and slathered in sweet butter with sprinkles of seasoning on top, this bread took me right back to when I used to live in Belgium. It reminded me of the after-school snacks my Dutch best-friend’s mom used to make us, slices of heated baguette with chocolate sprinkles. This appetizer truly got my appetite going and I was ready for the maincourse. We ordered a white wine mussel stew for 12,000W. These were real French style mussels steamed with lemon zest and
DODO MANSHOWN garlic in a white wine. They came with baguette slices for dipping into the stew. Apparently this restaurant was intent on giving me flashbacks of my days in Europe because this took me right back to France. I was in middle-school then and finally I’ve rediscovered the taste of those buttery, succulent mussels in Korea, what a surprise! This dish was quite large too, with lots of mussels for sharing. The menu actually had a good assortment of stews, which is pretty uncommon in Korea. They even had an apple stew. They have a “Today’s Stew” which is Chef ’s choice but you have to order a day ahead of time and it’s 20,000W. After how delicious the white wine mussels came out to be, I’m determined to try this chef ’s choice
stew though. While we were eating the mussels, the second entree came out. The chef ’s own creation, Kimchi Cream Pizza (12,000W medium size). Admittedly, I was a little hesitant about this fusion food but I’m not one to shy away from a new flavor so we tried it out. It’s the restaurant’s best seller, it had to be good! And so it was. The two flavors went together beautifully. The tartness of the kimchi and the thick cream placed on top a thin crust were born to be eaten together. It’s mild but spicy at the same time. It’s pretty much ingenius. DodoManshown also makes their own sodas. I got a blueberry soda
made from milk, carbonated mix, and fresh blueberries. The taste was similar to Milkus. It also comes in raspberry and other fruit flavors. For dessert you can choose from some teas or coffees. This is the standard at Korean restaurants but I was more than happy when it also came with two squares of pure chocolate that melted on my tongue. This secluded restaurant, tucked away in the midst of Apsan, is well worth the effort of finding it. I was happy all the way from the jasmine water to the chocolate squares at the end. This couple really understands the little things which made for a great experience.
Directions Take the subway to Hyeoncheong-ro Leave through exit 2 Go straight and when the street veers, go left Hike up hill until you reach a restaurant named “Gook Su” Take a left and keep going straight DodoManshown is on your left.

DAEGU’S TIME TO GIVE As the festive period fast approaches and the countdown to the end of the year begins, it is important for us to remember those less fortunate than ourselves. There are a number of orphanages in the Daegu area who need our help and this time of year is always harder for the children and young people who reside in them. Our new organisation, Daegu's Time To Give, is asking for your help in our end of year appeal.

Coming to South Korea and working sometimes leaves us with time to kill and many people choose to put their time and effort into volunteering. Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the community we live in, learn more about the Korean culture and really make a difference. We want to involve the ex-pat community in local projects which will improve relationships and engage with the local community, so no matter how big or small your contribution is we are all striving to achieve the same goal.

Our first project, the GIVE A GIFT APPEAL, is easy, fun and really rewarding. Anyone can get involved, it takes hardly anytime and most of all you will be making a difference in a child or young person's life. The idea is simple: many disadvantaged children do not receive what we take for granted at this time of year and it can often be a lonely time for them. We have set up the appeal in order to give the children a small token for the end of the year, bring a smile to their faces and remind them that there are people out there who care! 우리의 첫 번째 프로젝트인 ‘선

BRIGHT SMILE
Bright with and Beautiful Eyes and mouth are important factors to affect the first impression. Especially, beautiful smile is considered the most important factor for an attractive first impression. In this article, treatments to help you get the bright and beautiful teeth back which plays the greatest role on your gorgeous smile will be introduced. Tooth whitening
Professional whitening is the treatment that dentist make your teeth whitened by using a whitening material with high concentration and special light at the dental clinic. The effect of tooth whitening lasts 1~3 years. If you frequently eat food that easily stains teeth, the duration of the whitened teeth will be shortened. So, you can get it
Even and clean teeth are the most important factors for a beautiful smile. It is recommended for those who want to make teeth white and clean. Tooth discoloration and tooth whitening Tooth discoloration is caused when some staining materials such as coffee, nicotine and green tea penetrate the organic substance of dentin which is the internal substance of tooth.
Therefore, an adequate use of teeth whitening material, efficient treatment time, and the practitioner's expertise are vital factors for a successful teeth whitening.
checked every six months by visiting the dental clinic. If needed, a professional whitening can be done again. If someone wants to get a more effective result for the whitening, you can also do the self-whitening while having the professional whitening. During the day or while you sleep, you can do the self-whitening for yourself with the whitening kit made by the dental clinic by applying the whitening material to the whitening kit.
Professional whitening
Damage to teeth
The principle of tooth whitening is to oxidize staining materials with application of tooth whitening material whose main components are H2O2, and carbamide peroxide.

hite Submitted by MAC Dental Clinic Proofread by Suhyun Lee
You may be afraid that teeth whitening might make your teeth be weakened or sensitive. If you use untested whitening materials, you may experience such things. However, you don't have to worry about it with the professional whitening because dentists use safe and verified whitening materials only. Laminate Laminate is the odontoplasty that dentists slightly trim the surface of your teeth and attach thin porcelain plate on it. That is to say, laminate is the very cosmetic treatment that recovers damaged, deformed and stained teeth by attaching thin porcelain plate on the tooth surface. Since the laminate is the porcelain plate, with little discoloration, you can get the shape and color that you want for your teeth, which is the very aesthetic odontoplasty. Laminate is needed for following: -Small fracture of anterior teeth -Unfavorable tooth color; severe yellow or grey -Unusual tooth shape -Diastema; gap between anterior teeth -Overhang or rotation of only one or two anterior teeth All-ceramic, zirconia crown
BRIGHT SMILE All-ceramic is a way to naturally recover severely damaged teeth due to decay or abnormal shaped teeth. Unlike laminate which is the thin porcelain plate, it is the porcelain veneer, which fully covers trimmed teeth. In addition, in a variety of cases, it can be applied broadly. However, you should be aware that the teeth are required to be trimmed more than laminate. So it's better to decide after having enough consultation with your dentist. Advantages of all-ceramic crown -Aesthetically excellent; it is very similar to natural tooth because the light can be passed through it. -Little change in color and shape although time passes. -Good strength just as natural teeth -Custom-made teeth with suitable shape and color that you want Gingivoplasty There are people who have bright and harmonious teeth, but a forced smile. This can be caused by abnormal gum shape. Harmonious gum morphology is as important as beautiful teeth. The dentist can make gum be in an appropriate shape and so that the patient may have beautiful smile and satisfaction. Gingivoplasty is a procedure that dentist cuts gingiva with blade and give the patient beautiful and natural gum line. Recommendations for people. -Person whose gum is largely exposed when he (or she) smiles -Person who has asymmetrical gum line of anterior teeth area -Person who has short tooth crown because gum covers tooth surface excessively -Person whose gum is swollen during orthodontic treatment Confidence acts as the one of the most important factors in social life. Bright smile helps not only oneself to be confident, but others to be pleased. All members of MAC dental hospital think patients are my family. Also, when patients are satisfied with a bright smile after the treatment, that is the happiest moment for us.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Next, swing by the minature golf course and Suseong Land. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor
Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

You can find DoDo Manshown on your left if you turn left at the corner of above “Gook Su” and go straight 100m into Nammyeong elementary school. It's a little bit out of the way, but well worth the walk, especially on a pleasant spring afternoon when you can sit outside. The owner of DoDo and his girlfriend renovated two story house and turned it into a restaurant by themselves. DoDo’s most popular menu is “Kimchi Cream Pizza” and “chicken breast Pasta seasoned with soy sauce”, which are so called fusion dishes. There are different varieties of Pizza and Pasta available. Perfect place for dating for couples eating good food, watching the world go by.
Nam Gu Daemyeong 9Dong 486-19 / 053-657-6112 / Open 12:00pm~11:00pm(Sat.12:00am) / Wed. Close
You can spot this place on your left side opposite the Sleepless Seattle when you get off around 50m going toward Apsan from Nammyeong three way road. It reminded me similar small restaurants in Italy, with Firenze style T-bone Steak and Spaghetti Menu. Especially meat quality of T-bone Steak is quit good as using only 한우. Price is reasonable compared to others serving steak using imported meat at much higher prices. 350g T-bone Steak of 37,000won is enough portion for a couple. The tender meat was best to with red wine. Napoli pizza is also recommended menu. It was served with topping of fresh ingredients and thin soft dough at cost only 14,000won.
Nam Gu Daemyeong 9Dong 493-32 / 053-625.135 / Open 12:00pm~10:00pm Last order ~09:30 Break Time 3~5:00pm
ESPRESSO&COMPANY is on your left when you turn left from Hyunchungno Station. You should take exit 2. This restaurant opened this year in March. The owner, Tristan, used to work at the headquarters of Hand's Coffee; a popular Korean coffee franchise. With a variety of coffee beans to select from: Kenya, Brazil, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Papa New Guinea, ESPRESSO&COMPANY is not your typical coffee shop. Oh, they also have the premier espresso machine, La Marzocco, which is Italian made and costs about as much as a new car. There are only a handful of these machines in Korea and Daegu is lucky to have one. Tristan believes that quality coffee starts with the farmers, the delivery people, the baristas and finally you, the customer. Stop by and try the best coffee in Daegu at ESPRESSO&COMPANY.
Nam Gu Daemyeong 9Dong 493-40 / 053-621-8251 / Open 12:00am ~11:00pm(Sat.12:00pm) / Wed. Close
Bruch Studio is on your left when you turn right at Nammyeong three way road and go straight 50m. This restaurant was opened three months ago in May and the owner was a chef in a hotel. All white painted walls of there make interior bright and let me feel comfortable like home. Also brunch menu seems to be like what mom used to cook for me. And they do not use MSG at all. Their motto is to make good food. Highly recommended menu here is “Brunch Set consisted of Grilled Sausage, Bacon, Fried egg, Green salad, Soup, Baked potatoes, Toast, Americano coffee. Apple chutney flat bread is also popular menu.

Maya - 2F Restaurant
A wood-fired tandoor oven seeps into your senses as you enter the door to this fantastic Indian/Nepali restaurant. Relatively new to Daegu, about 2 years old now, this restaurant is a great escape from the retro-urban decor that most Daegu restaurants display. A cozy interior with exotic tapestries of the far east adorning the walls. Reasonable prices and great Thali sets round out this establishment. Check the Kyungdae Compass map on p64 for directions. 11:00am to 11:00pm everyday (closed Mondays)
