This issue we are focusing on traveling around Asia and it’s wonderful islands. The Daegu Compass is looking for people to help with their online site. e is without doubt the greatest pop artist of all time and it is highly unlikely that his success and fame will ever be surpassed. His vast and loyal fan base spans across every corner of the globe to this day and it is probably fair to say that it is continuing to increase even after his untimely death four years ago. Along with his fame, there also came

just as much controversy, which he will always be remembered for. Michael Jackson left an impression on the whole world, mostly in a positive manner, and nowadays his legacy lives on through numerous tribute acts continuing to perform in his honor. ‘The Immortal Tour’, which is performed by the infamous Cirque du Soleil, has been on a world tour since late

1) How did each performer end up being a part of this amazing tour? For the dancers, invite only auditions were held in Los Angeles, New York, and Paris. Thousands of dancers from around the world auditioned and only about 20 some were chosen to be a part of the show. For the acrobats, Cirque du Soleil has scouts all over the world as well as a very strong online casting website. Some of the artists had submitted videos online, and others were scouted from their own country. Some came from other Cirque du Soleil shows, and others this is their first Cirque du Soleil show. The musicians were chosen by Greg Phillinganes (Musical Director) and Kevin Antunes (Musical Designer). Greg was Michael Jackson’s Musical Director for 20+ years so he knew what was needed for a stellar band. 5 of the band members formerly played with Michael Jackson, which adds an authenticity to the show that you can’t get anywhere else.

When putting together a show celebrating Michael Jackson, it is imperative that the people involved are only the best. Steps to making authentic Korean ramyeon noodles: 1. Put 3 cups of wheat flour in a large mixing bowl. Create a well in the centre of the flour. 2. Add the wet ingredients slowly (1 cup of water and 2 table spoons of olive oil) making sure to combine all ingredients. The best way to do this is to get stuck in with your hands. This is an important stage so patience will be rewarded by adding in the wet ingredients as slowly as possible. 3. Knead the dough by hand for a good 5-10 minutes until the dough forms a ball. Add flour to the surface to help you roll the dough. 4. Roll the dough using a rolling pin until you create a pizza sized circle.

5. Fold the dough into a ‘parcel-like’ shape. Wrap dough in cling film and put in the fridge for 12 hours. 6. 12 hours later you can cut the dough into thick noodles. 7. Bring a pot of water to the boil and add the noodles, allowing them to simmer for 7 minutes. In the class the chefs added cucumber, spring onion, red chillies and a fish broth but you can add any flavours you prefer. And there you have it, Korean noodles made easy. Now you can take this recipe home to impress your family and friends. Kimchi optional.

Living in Korea can bring many new experiences. The chance to travel and the chance to meet new and exciting people but, like all good travellers, there is one major element of cultural exploration that we here at the Daegu Compass particularly enjoy. That is of course, FOOD. Korean cuisine, whether you love it or hate it, can be varied and interesting. It is definitely always a good talking point. If, in the near future, you are planning to leave the shores of Korea, you might want to take some culinary skills with you to wow your friends back home. This idea was at the forefront of our minds when we heard that the 2013 Food Festival was coming to Daegu. The Exco building, in which the Festival was held, was filled to bursting with endlessly different stalls, from Korean rice wine tasting to French chefs baking. The Exco also ran many free workshops. This was the perfect opportunity to learn some of Korea’s culinary secrets, and try a lot of delicious free food in the process.

The Daegu Compass went along to a noodle making class. The class was a mix of Koreans and Westerners of all ages eager to learn. The class was taught to make dough from scratch, as well as given a free sample of how their noodle dough will taste once cooked. We wanted to share what we learnt with our lovely readers.

When I booked my flight to Hong Kong, I knew little of what to expect. I only knew three things … it was a modern city, it would likely have Chinese cuisine and most importantly to me for winging a trip, it didn’t require a visa for entrance. I never suspected it would be one of those countries that floored me. From my very first ride into the city to my departure, Hong Kong’s unique urban attributes took my surprise to a magnitude I’ve never before experienced.

2) Do you know what to expect in South Korea? No, not really! Travis Payne, one of the lead choreographers for the show, was just telling me how much he loves South Korea and how it has become one of his favorite places to work. Seeing how passionate the Japanese audiences were, we hope to see similar reaction in Korea. I’ve heard that Japan is actually more reserved than other Asian countries, which also leads me to believe that Taiwan, Korea, and China, will offer us incredibly appreciative and passionate crowds. 정말 영광이었다. 문화권 별로 공연에 대해 보이는 다양한 반응을 지켜 보는 것은 정말 흥미로웠다. 예를 들어, 멕시 코 시티는 최고의 관객이 있었던 곳 중 하나이다. 그 곳의 사람들은 열정적이고, 크게 소리를 지르며 신나 했고, 매 일 밤 일어나서 공연을 보았고 심지어 핸드폰 전등을 켜서 손에 들고 “I’ll Be There.”가 나오는 동안 공연 장소를 밝 혔다. 모스크바의 관객들 역시 아레나를 밝혔으며, 아주 아주 보수적인 관객들이었기에 전혀 예상치 못 한 일이었 다. 이런 반응으로 봐서 러시아 관객들이 공연을 아주 좋 아했다고 말 할 수 있지만, 공연을 보는 동안 자리에 앉아 서 조용히 감상했다. 우리는 막 일본 공연을 마쳤고 일본 관객은 이제껏 본 최고의 관객 중 하나였다. 그들은 마이 클 잭슨에 대해 정말 열정적이었고 공연 장소를 가득 채 운 에너지를 느낄 수 있었다. 그것은 정말 멋졌고 우리를 겸손하게 만들었다.

Living in Korea can bring many new experiences. The chance to travel and the chance to meet new and exciting people but, like all good travellers, there is one major element of cultural exploration that we here at the Daegu Compass particularly enjoy. That is of course, FOOD. Korean cuisine, whether you love it or hate it, can be varied and interesting. It is definitely always a good talking point. If, in the near future, you are planning to leave the shores of Korea, you might want to take some culinary skills with you to wow your friends back home. This idea was at the forefront of our minds when we heard that the 2013 Food Festival was coming to Daegu. The Exco building, in which the Festival was held, was filled to bursting with endlessly different stalls, from Korean rice wine tasting to French chefs baking. The Exco also ran many free workshops. This was the perfect opportunity to learn some of Koreaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s culinary secrets, and try a lot of delicious free food in the process. The Daegu Compass went along to a noodle making class. The class was a mix of Koreans and Westerners of all ages eager to learn. The class was taught to make dough from scratch, as well as given a free sample of how their noodle dough will taste once cooked. We wanted to share what we learnt with our lovely readers.

Wrap dough in cling film and put in the fridge for 12 hours. 6. 12 hours later you can cut the dough into thick noodles. 7. Bring a pot of water to the boil and add the noodles, allowing them to simmer for 7 minutes. In the class the chefs added cucumber, spring onion, red chillies and a fish broth but you can add any flavours you prefer. And there you have it, Korean noodles made easy. 1. Gin Gins (Ginger candy)

Do yourself a precautionary favor and pack some ginger candy for your next trip. I recommend Gin Gins because each piece comes individually wrapped. Super easy to take with you on the go for all your adventurous eating binges. The candy actually tastes quite good, and you can even put them in hot water to make a tea. Oh, and they’re fat free, gluten free, and vegan. First, I’m not saying you need to bring an actual full on nautical compass. One of those coin-sized ones on a keychain or even a compass app on your smartphone will do. Hell, use the sun and stars to navigate if you can. All I’m saying is that you need something that can tell you which direction you’re going. Trust me, it comes in handy.

A very simple but practical use for a compass is finding out which side of the street you need to be on to catch a cab. If you’re in a sprawling metropolis like Seoul that has 6-lane roads and doesn’t offer much in U-turn opportunities, simply knowing to cross the street can save you precious minutes and dollars. Or put to a bigger scale, if you’re traveling on a long stretch of road in a less developed area like Phuket with few landmarks and cross roads, you better be damn sure you’re facing the right direction. Last thing you want is to be stranded in the jungle after dark with no gas in your scooter. Of course all this is moot if you don’t already know which direction you’re supposed to go in the first place. So pair your compass with a map and use both wisely!

2. 나침반 나침반이라고.. 진짜로? 숲 속으로 캠핑가는 게 아니란 걸 알

Ok I know none of that shit’s real, BUT it does however illustrate some fine points about the multi-functionality of a towel. I can think of at least two trips where I was freezing my ass off at the airport (one in Bangkok of all places) when a towel would have been just the thing to keep me warm. I know there are plenty of arguments against bringing a towel, but for something that folds down to the size of a dinner napkin, I see no real excuses.

Never heard of it? Think IcyHot… but with bits and pieces of tiger mixed in. Just kidding. Tiger Balm gets the last nod because it’s the ancient Chinese remedy I used as a child and recently rediscovered as an adult. It’s also got a bunch of different uses and a pretty cool name. As a kid, my parents gave me this to apply over mosquito bites. Its active ingredients menthol and camphor (rosemary oil) act as counter irritants that soothe the applied area by increasing circulation and making the skin feel tingly. Basically, it gets rid of the itch. Now as an aging man, I use this product for a different reason – muscle pain relief. After seeing the world a bit, I’ve accepted that one of the inevitabilities of travel is that you get fucking tired. While one can take a few measures to get more comfortable, ultimately the wear and tear of daily exploration sets into your muscles and joints. This is where Tiger Balm comes in. Its main design is to be used as a topical analgesic, which means pain relief when applied over a body surface. This stuff is good enough to be used by massage therapists in Thailand, and it was my salvation when I lay in my hotel room a broken man after coming out of break dance retirement at age 30 and doing the world’s highest bungee jump all within a 36 hour period. Best reunion with a childhood keepsake ever. 3. Double-deck buses Formerly a British colony, the double deck bus was introduced to Hong Kong in 1949 and since, it’s stayed as the common form of bus transportation of the city. There are also double deck trams, as well. Grab your octopus transportation card and give it a try.

Hong Kong Island occasionally has raised walkways to connect you between buildings and to lift foot traffic over the streets. Tip: The Soho escalators aren’t actually built for sightseeing, but more practically for getting around; thus, it’s not easy to take photos when you’re on it. 대부분의 도시에서는 평균적인 시야가 눈높이와 같다. 눈높이 위로는 보통 성공할 수 있는 상업적 인 공간으로 취급되지 않는다. 그러나 홍콩에서는 이야기가 좀 다르다. 홍콩 아일랜드에는 건물 사 이를 잇거나 보행자들을 위해 거리를 가로 지르는 육교가 군데군데 있다. 2층이나 3층에 있는 가게 나 레스토랑을 절대 과소평가해서는 안 될 것이다. 아래 사진 : 소호의 계단은 언덕의 한쪽을 올라가 는 800m짜리 에스컬레이터이다. 타는데 20분이 걸리나 걸어가면 45분이 걸린다. 에스컬레이터를 타고 가다 보면, 그냥은 눈치채지도 못 할 2층의 몇몇 멋진 가게와 카페를 보게 될 것이다. 팁: 소 호의 에스컬레이터는 사실 관광을 목적으로 지어 진 것이 아니라 돌아다니기 위한 실용적인 목적으 로 건설되었다. 그래서 에스컬레이터를 탔을 때 사 진을 찍기 쉽지 않을 것이다.

How many people do the streets of Hong Kong hold? An unimaginable lot. As a thriving international city, the population averages 6,300 people per square kilometer.

6. Signs are everywhere The streets of Hong Kong are checkered with neon lit signage. It’s hard not to notice the lack of head space in its surroundings. Every place you look there’s signs from business names, road instructions to rules in the park. Of the signage, one resident said, “Hong Kong society adheres to a lot of rules. Folks here, don’t question them; they simply follow them.”

7. Communal Dining When the restaurant packed full, what can you do but pull out the chair of the nearest available seat. Don’t worry, Hong Kongese don’t mind, communal dining is common. Join a family or a group of strangers and strike up a conversation. In fact, you can even ask locals their advice on food. Below, an onlooker watches as the waiter takes a traveler’s order. The diner advised her against her interest in his own dish… beef tongue.

estled in a valley surrounded by mountains Geumo, Cheonsaeng, and Taejo, Gumi lies just slightly outside Daegu’s phosphorescent glow, about 25-40 minutes west, depending on which train you hop on. What it lacks in neon it makes up for in natural beauty, culture and charm. That’s not to say the midsize Daegu suburb of 390,000 – roughly 5,000 of whom are foreigners – doesn’t know how to relax like a city. Its streets are lined with adorable cafes, restaurants and bars, like the ex-pat favorite Corona. 금오산, 천생산, 태조산으로 둘러 쌓인 계곡에 안겨있는 구미는 대구의 화려한 불빛에서 조금 벗어나 있는 곳에 있으며, 어떤 기차를 타느냐 에 따라 대구에서 서쪽으로 25-40분 정도 소 요된다. 이 곳에 없는 화려함은 지역 자연의 아 름다움, 문화 그리고 매력으로 채워진다. 하지 만 이 말은 인구 390,000명 중 대략 5,000명 이 외국인이고, 대구 교외에 위치한 중소 도시 인 구미가 도시처럼 즐기는 방법을 모른다는 이야기가 아니다. 이 곳의 길거리에는 귀여운 카페, 레스토랑, 그리고 외국인에게 인기있는 코로나 같은 바들이 줄지어 있다.

As home to both Samsung Electronics and LG Display headquarters, Gumi is often monotonously referred to as Korea’s electronics epicenter. The city is also historically popular for being the birthplace of former president Park Jeong-hee. But the Gumi that I have come to know and adore in my five short months here goes much deeper than its fast facts resume suggests.

Photo: Nakdong River and Geumo Mountain After a stagnant winter, spring breathes life to the Nakdong River as the icy grip loosens on the Daehye Waterfall on Geumo Mountain. With the coming of spring, the mountain road becomes a lush and vibrant path, dazzling with cherry blossoms and other spring flowers. The park that runs along the riverbank is lined with vendors peddling yummy red bean pastries and is a wonderful spot for picnicking. Gumi hosts cultural events and celebrations here throughout the year.

사진 : 낙동강과 금오산 정체된 겨울 이후, 금오산에 있는 대혜 폭포의 얼어붙은 물줄기가 녹음에 따라 봄이 낙동강에 생명을 불어넣는다. 봄이 옴과 동시에 산길은 벚꽃과 다른 봄 꽃으로 눈부신, 울창하고 활기찬 통로가 된다. 공원은 맛있는 풀빵을 파는 노점상이 줄지어 있는 강가를 따라 자리잡아서 소풍을 가 기에 정말 좋은 장소이다. 구미는 일 년 내내 문화 이벤트 와 축제를 개최한다.

Photo: Lake at Geumo Mountain Geumosan Lake lies at the entrance of the Geumo Mountain Provincial Park, where you can also find many restaurants, cafes, and even an amusement park – Geumo Land. A floating boardwalk encircles the lake at the base of Geumo Mountain. If a picnic in the gazebo hovering over the lake, ducky boat ride, or stroll along the water’s edge sounds too relaxing, plenty of trails lead through the surrounding mountain. With the exception of my favorite local café, this is where I spend most of my time. 사진 : 금오산의 호수 금오산 호수는 금오산 도립 공원 입구에 위치해 있고, 이 곳에서는 많은 레스토 랑, 카페, 그리고 심지어 금오랜드라는 놀이공원까지 있다. 금오산 기슭에는 판 자 산책로가 강을 둘러 싸고 있다. 강 위에 떠있는 정자에서의 소풍, 오리보트 를 타기, 강가를 따라 산책하기가 너무 느긋하다고 생각된다면, 주변 산까지 이 어져 있는 산길을 이용해보는 것도 좋다. 내가 제일 좋아하는 로컬 카페를 제외 하고는 이 곳이 내가 제일 많은 시간을 보내는 곳이다.

or anyone who has hiked regularly in Korea, you may be familiar with the experience of visiting a National or Provincial Park. Typically, the Park entrance is well served by a number of restaurants and novelty shops. After a 15-20 minute walk you find a temple complex. An hour hike will lead you to a shrine (often with a unique story to tell), and another hour hike will get you to the mountain summit, and those well-deserved views. This is the standard Korean formula – the routine many of us are used to. Some parks however, offer something a little bit extra… 한국에서 정기적으로 등산을 해본 사람이 면 누구나 국립공원이나 도립공원에 가 본 경험이 있을 것이다. 보통, 공원의 입구는 많은 식당들과 잡화상들로 잘 꾸며져 있다. 15분에서 20분 정도 걸어 가다 보면 절이 나온다. 한 시간 정도 걸어 올라가다 보면 종종 다른 이들에게 들려줄 만한 특별한 이 야기를 담고 있을 법한 사당이 나타날 것이 다. 그 후 한 시간을 더 올라가다 보면 산 정 상에 도착하는데, 볼 만한 풍경들이 펼쳐진 다. 이것이 바로 우리들 대부분이 익숙해져 있는 한국 등산의 일반적인 표준 공식이다. 하지만 몇몇 공원들은 그 이상의 무언가를 우리에게 보여준다.

Daedunsan is one such place. Nestled midway between Daejeon and Jeonju, the mountain rises 878m above the surrounding countryside. It is perhaps one of Korea’s lesser-known mountains, which is somewhat surprising considering the attractions it contains. Having travelled a lot in Korea, I can say it’s certainly every bit as beautiful as many of the country’s more prestigious National Parks. 대둔산도 그러한 장소 중 하나이다. 대전과 전주 사 이에 아늑하게 자리잡은 산은 해발 878m로 시골로 둘러 쌓여있다. 산의 경치를 고려해 봤을 때 대둔 산이 잘 알려지지 않은 산 중에 하나라는 사실은 사 뭇 놀랍다. 한국에서 여행을 많이 다녀봤지만, 확실 히 어느 모로 보나 더 이름있는 다른 국립공원들만 큼이나 대둔산이 아름답다고 말할 수 있겠다 -continued on p36-

From the Park entrance the mountain begins with a steep paved road that leads to the start of the trail, which is well-trodden and stony. After not long, craggy ridges and cliff faces start to punctuate the (usually) lush flora. This becomes more common as you ascend, making the trail more rewarding as it gets more challenging. For those less-abled, a cable car is located just a short walk from the Park entrance, which whisks passengers to a point approximately 600m up the mountain. 공원 입구에서부터 가파른 포장된 도로가 시작되는데, 이를 따라 가다 보면 돌이 많고 잘 다져진 등산로가 펼쳐질 것이다. 오래 지 않아, 무성한 수풀들 사이로 험준한 바위투성이의 산등성이와 절 벽 면이 간간이 보이기 시작한다. 산을 올라갈수록 이런 풍경은 더 자주 나타난다. 등산로가 좀 더 도전적으로 변해서 그만큼 보람도 느낄 수 있다. 등산이 힘에 부친다면, 공원 입구에서 잠깐만 걸어 가면 케이블카가 나온다. 케이블카는 승객들을 대략 산의 600m 지점으로 데려간다.

After 90 minutes or so (or 5 minutes in the cable car), you reach the main attraction – the 50m long ‘Geumgang Gureumdari’ suspension bridge. The bridge spans an 80m deep gorge with sheer cliff faces on either side. A short scramble beyond the gorge is an equally impressive steel staircase, which rises steeply to another ridge. Believe me – few places in Korea can match Daedunsan for such a spectacle. 90분간 등산을 하거나, (아니면 케이블카를 5 분 정도 타면), 주요 명소에 도착하게 된다. 바 로 50m 길이의 ‘금강구름다리’라고 불리는 현 수교이다. 다리는 깎아지르는 듯한 벼랑의 면 을 양쪽에 두고 80m 깊이의 골짜기를 가로지 른다. 골짜기를 건너 잠시 올라가다 보면, 다리 만큼이나 감명적인 철골계단이 나오는데 그것 은 또 다른 산등성이로 가파르게 올라간다. 정 말이지 대둔산의 이러한 광경에는 한국의 어 떤 곳도 필적할 수 없을 것이다.

It should be noted that this part of the trek is not for the fainthearted - the trail is at its most congested and demanding at this point. The staircase in particular, will test anyone with even a mild case of vertigo. To ease this congestion a one-way system is enforced on the way up. Fortunately, those of a nervous disposition can choose to take a route below, which bypasses the bridge and staircase. This also acts as the down-route for hikers descending from the top. 하지만 등산로의 이 부분은 심약한 사람들을 위한 것이 아니라는 점에 유의해야 한다. 이 구역이 가 장 붐비고 힘들다. 특히 계단에서 가벼운 현기증을 경험할 지도 모른다. 이러한 혼잡을 완화시키기 위 해서 올라가는 등산로는 일방통행으로 운영되고 있 다. 운 좋게도, 예민한 사람들은 아래쪽 등산로를 선택할 수 있는데, 이는 다리와 계단을 우회한다. 이 등산로는 정상에서 내려오는 등산객들도 이용 할 수 있다.

Beyond the steel staircase, the trail continues for another 30 mins towards the summit. Those who make it all the way will find an obelisk-like stone plinth that wouldn’t look out of place in a science fiction movie. Like the Geumgang Gureumdari bridge, it’s something that makes this park unique. At the top, sweeping views between the peaks of Macheondae, and Nakjodae. Magnificent. 철골계단을 지나면, 정상까지 등산로가 30분 정도 더 이어 진다. 여기까지 성공한 사람들을 ‘오벨리스크’처럼 생긴 주 춧돌을 발견할 것이다. 하지만 그 돌은 공상과학영화에서 튀 어 나와 잘못된 장소에 놓여진 것 같이 보이지는 않는다. 금 강 구름다리처럼, 이 공원을 더 특별하게 만들어 준다. 꼭대 기에 오르면, 마천대와 낙조대 봉우리 사이에서 멀리 보이는 전망이 참으로 훌륭하다.

In all, the hike should take around 4 – 4.5 hours (approximately half that for those using the cable car). As with any mountain of this scale, you should be in a reasonably fit state to hike the entire way. 등산은 전체적으로 약 네 시간에서 네 시간 반 정도 걸 린다. (케이블 카를 이용하면 대략 그 반 정도의 시간 이 걸린다.) 이 정도 규모의 산이라면 모든 코스를 등 반할 수 있는 만큼 건강해야 할 것이다.

The Cable car operates 9:00 – 18:00 during the summer and costs W8500 for a round-trip. Park admission is free. 케이블카는 여름 동안 9시에서 6시까지 운행된다. 왕복 요금 이 8500원이며 공원은 무료로 입장이 가능하다.

Useful Information 유용한 정보 The easiest way to reach Daedunsan is via Daejeon. Take the KTX from DongDaegu (50 mins, trains depart every 10 mins or so). From Daejeon Station take a taxi to the Seobu Bus Terminal and catch the direct bus to Daedunsan. At the time of writing there were three buses a day to the mountain base. This may increase to six-a-day in high season. Alternatively, bus 34 departs Daejeon Seoubu Terminal every 40 mins and terminates at ‘Daedunsan Hyugeso’ one mile from the Park entrance. The last direct bus back to Daejeon is at about 18:00. Neither the direct or the 34 bus costs more than a few bucks. 대전을 경유하여 대둔산으로 가는 가장 쉬운 방 법을 알려주겠다. 우선 동대구역에서 KTX를 타 라.(50분 소요. 대략 10여분 마다 기차 출발) 대 전역에서 택시를 타고 서부정류장으로 가서 대둔 산 직행버스를 타라. 필자의 방문 당시, 대둔산행 버스가 하루에 세 대 있었다. 성수기에는 하루에 여 섯대로 운행이 늘지도 모른다. 그렇지 않으면 대 전 서부정류장에서 40분 마다 34번 버스가 있다. 버스의 종점은 대둔산 휴게소인데 공원 입구에서 1.7km마일 정도 떨어져 있다. 대전으로 돌아오는 마지막 직행버스는 저녁 6시경이다. 직행버스든 34번 버스든 요금은 몇 천원 정도이다.

It means this common character clarifies the spirit of the times and the identity of a local area. It is obvious that distinctive local art reflects and is closely bound up with local residents’ life and their emotions. If we want to enrich our lives and enhance the pride of our community, we have to assert our local culture’s differentiation and seriously question its association with our lives. We thus believe the purpose of all things related to artistic and cultural activities should concentrate on local places or life in a local areas, moving beyond the universality of globalism.

It may not be easy to discover the identity of local art in a region where communication and exchanges are relatively liberal and its art is profoundly influenced by centralized art. However this is not completely impossible in a place with time-honored traditions, and value sought within these traditions, and where progressive activities are accumulated. In consideration of Daegu art’s previous accomplishments and its attitude

to explore profundity without being content with superficial renditions of objects, Daegu’s art is particularly characterized by its ‘contemplative atmosphere.’ If the crucial factor determining Daegu art’s characteristics is an attitude seeking ‘authenticity’ and ‘reality,’ anchored to ‘tradition’ and ‘openness,’ then we need to understand how such attitudes has been inherited in the varying types of art in Daegu -continued on p46-

Daegu Art Traditions and Openness Since the introduction of Western paintings into Korea, Daegu has been the place where the tradition of naturalist painting styles has been inherited as a starting point of modern Korean art. Formed in the early 1920s, the Western painting scene of Daegu consists of artists working in diverse genres. Based on representational art in the early introductory period, the art scene established the foundation for the evolvement of the naturalist painting style. However, its key figures never pursued only realism as representational figurative art, but have evoked harmony in conflicts of compatibility between conservative style and experimental spirit. Considering that a city with a huge base of painting and calligraphy which embraced Western painting earlier and more actively than others, it was perhaps impossible for the city to do this without its openness toward new civilizations. At this time, Daegu’s conservative tradition was combined early on with the new generation’s fresh spirit. As abundant cultural human resources were brought into Daegu during the Korean War, after liberation Daegu became a city with a complex character. Korean artists who studied in Japan came back to Daegu before emancipation from Japanese colonial rule, artists from other regions including Seoul, temporarily stayed in Daegu, and North Korean defector artists settled in Daegu. The inflow of these artists stimulated a painting style which sought new modes and renovated

Daegu’s tradition. As progressive thoughts and cultural openness were added to the unitarity of conservatism, naturalism and abstractionism in art coexisted. Daegu then grew into a city full of potential with resilience and dynamism with which the city accepted positively.

Daegu Art Seeking ‘Authenticity’ and ‘Reality’ While keeping the purity of art after the war and enduring the age of destitution, most artists had to face existential problems like despair and suspicion. In a process of overcoming an era of hardship, Daegu artists always reflected on the fundamentals with a spirit of exploration based on the ‘tradition’ of Daegu art and warned of being excessively maudlin with ‘authenticity.’ They also had a progressive attitude with ‘openness’, deterring the conservation of the art world and respecting a new experimental spirit. Likewise, works of the artists mainly active in Daegu implied ‘authenticity to attain reality, anchored to tradition and openness.’ The purpose of this exhibition is to confirm ‘Daegu art’s seriousness in exploring naturalism and abstractionism’s meditative aspects and pursuing the true nature of objects’ which are Daegu art’s identity and distinctive characteristics. This is accomplished through works of the artists who have sought after the reality of objects with an authentic attitude while avoiding sentimentalism. Diversity in styles and new potential based on this spirit are

expected. Especially with this exhibition, which marks the second anniversary of the Daegu Art Museum, Daegu art’s diverse idioms based on deep-rooted tradition and openness are intended to be revealed through the present works of Daegu’s mid-career artists. The exhibition sheds light on their idioms and modes, largely classified into the following four genres in terms of natural and humanistic themes, expressionistic, and constructive ways. - Naturalist work in the oldest tradition. Work primarily exploring the theme of natural scenery in representational, simplified ways. - Work excluding or minimizing an individual’s subjective expression of feeling and instead seeking objective expression as far as possible. Minimalist, geometric abstract art or work of conceptual, contemplative exploration derived from the attitude reducing painting to its fundamental form. - Work abundantly displaying expressive impulses and ardent emotions as another tendency of abstraction through brush work and color. Work in the area of passionately conveying emotion and demonstrating abundant expressivity. - Work lending form to subjective content with interest in social, humanistic problems. Work addressing existential issues under the theme of human spirit, consciousness, and relations with others. There may be other artists whose works have aesthetic features not confined to any fixed frame of conception. If considering this, it may be more desirable to underscore each work’s individual character rather than merely classifying their work into the above categories. As the Daegu local art scene consists of a variety of artists and art styles, it would be better to arrange and showcase their diverse aspects. Although such classi-continued on p48-

fication of types and definition of their hallmarks have unavoidable shortcomings, the classification of genres was made to clarify Daegu art’s identity and display their diversity. In fact, each artist can extend their arena of work through the constant trailblazing of the new world without being confined to any specific genre. However, mid-career artists have made attempts to confront the underlying problems of life and art without involving any sentimentalism. This is their distinctive characteristic, differentiated from this generation of young artists. It is hoped through the show that Daegu art’s depth and diversity become satisfactorily known to all.

다양한 양식에 깃든 ‘사색(思索)적인 분위기’ 김영동 한 지역의 미술에 지속적으로 나타나는 공통된 성격이 있 다면 그것을 곧 그 지역 미술의 정체성으로 보게 된다. 우 리는 거기서 한 곳의 시대정신과 로컬리티의 독자성을 확 인할 수도 있을 것이다. 개성 있는 지역미술의 전개는 지 역민의 삶과 공동체의 정서를 반영하며 상호 깊은 연관을 맺고 있을 것임이 분명하다. 만약 우리가 삶을 좀 더 풍부 하게 하고 자신들의 공동체에 대한 자긍심을 높이고자 한 다면 바로 지역문화에 어떤 차별성을 주장함과 동시에 삶 과의 연관성을 좀 더 진지하게 묻지 않을 수 없다. 그래서 미술뿐 아니라 각종 문화 활동의 정책 지향점은 항상 글로 벌리즘의 보편성을 넘어 다시 지역의 장소성에 또 현지의 삶에 귀결되어야 한다고 믿는다.

소통과 교류가 비교적 자유롭고 그만큼 중앙의 영향이 밀 접한 지역에서 펼쳐지는 미술에서 독자성을 찾는 일은 쉽 지 않겠지만 그래도 오랜 전통 속에 추구해온 가치와 진 취적인 활동들이 누적된 곳에서라면 불가능할 일도 아니 다. 지난 업적들을 통해 대구미술의 특징을 도출해본다면 자연주의든 추상주의든 대상의 피상적인 묘사에 만족하 지 않고 깊이를 천착하려는 태도를 보여온 점을 우선적으 로 고려하여 ‘사색적인 분위기’를 꼽을 수 있겠다. 바로 대 구미술의 성격을 결정짓는 요인은 ‘전통’과 ‘개방성’을 동 시에 지닌 채 ‘진정성’과 ‘리얼리티’를 추구하는 자세로 요 약해 본다면 오늘날 다양한 모습의 대구미술 속에서 어떻 게 그런 정신이 이어져 오고 있는지 확인해보고자 한다.

대구미술의 전통과 개방성 대구는 국내 서양화 도입기에서부터 근대미술의 역사가 시작된 지역으로서 자연주의 화풍의 긴 전통이 이어져 오 는 곳이다. 1920년대 초엽에 형성된 대구의 서양화단은 다양한 분야의 인사들이 포함된 구성에도 불구하고 도입 초기단계의 재현적인 미술이 근간이 되어 자연주의적인 화풍을 발전시킬 기틀을 다져놓았다. 하지만 중심인물들 간에는 재현적인 구상미술로 사실주의만을 지향한 적은 없었고 항상 보수적인 양식과 실험적인 정신이 양립하며 갈등 속에 조화를 노정시켜 왔다. 원래 서화미술의 두터운 층을 가졌던 도시가 일찍이 서양화의 수용에 적극적인 자 세를 보였던 것 자체가 벌써 새로운 문명에 대한 개방적인 성격이 없었다면 불가능했을 일라고 볼 수 있다. 이 때 이 미 대구의 보수적인 전통은 신세대의 새로운 정신과 결합 했던 것이다. 게다가 해방과 전쟁을 겪는 동안에 많은 피 난 예술가들이 내려오면서 자연스럽게 문화전반에 풍부 한 인적자원이 유입되어 복합적인 성격까지 갖춘 도시가 되었다. 해방 이전 이미 일본 유학생들의 귀국과 주경 등 의 추상 작가들이 대구로 들어왔고 6.25를 거치면서 서울 과 타 지역작가들의 일시적인 체류나 북쪽에서 피난 온 작 가들의 정착은 새로운 형식을 추구하려는 화풍을 크게 진 작시켜 다시 한 번 대구의 전통을 쇄신시켰다. 그래서 일

찍이 보수적인 색채의 단일성에 진취적인 사상과 문화적 개방성이 더해져 미술에서 자연주의와 추상주의가 병존 하게 되었고 현대미술의 다양한 변화에 능동적으로 대응 할 수 있는 탄력성과 역동성을 갖춘 저력 있는 미술도시 로 성장할 수 있었다.

‘진정성’과 ‘리얼리티’ 추구의 대구미술 전쟁 이후 궁핍의 시대를 버텨내면서 예술의 순수성을 지 켜내는 동안 대부분의 작가들이 절망이나 회의 같은 실존 적인 문제에 부닥칠 수 밖에 없었다. 고난의 시대를 극복 하는 과정에서 대구미술의 ‘전통’에 자리 잡은 탐구 정신 은 그래서 언제나 근본을 성찰하며 쉽게 감상적 취향에 흐 르는 것을 경계하는 ‘진정성’을 수반했다. 그리고 ‘개방성’ 은 화단 전체의 보수화를 막고 나아가 새로운 실험정신을 존중하는 진취적 자세로 내재화되었다고 본다. 그래서 현 재까지도 대구를 중심으로 활동한 작가들의 작품 안에서 는 이와 같이 ‘전통과 개방성 그리고 피상적 가상을 돌파 해 리얼리티를 확보하려는 진정성’을 엿볼 수 있었다. 본 전시의 취지는 지금까지 감상(感傷)을 허용하지 않는 진정 성있는 태도로 대상의 리얼리티를 추구해온 작가들의 작 품을 통해, 대구지역 미술의 정체성이자 특성인 ‘자연주의 와 추상주의 미술의 사색적인 측면과 대상의 본질을 추구 하는 진지함’을 확인하는데 있다 하겠다. 그런 정신의 바 탕 위에 구축된 양식의 다양성과 새로운 가능성도 함께 전 망할 수 있으리라 기대한다. 특별히 이번 전시에는 대구미 술관의 개관 2주년에 맞춰 이런 뿌리 깊은 전통 위에 개방 성을 동시에 볼 수 있는 대구지역 미술의 다양한 양식을 ‘대구 중견작가들의 현재 작품’을 통해 드러내보고자 한 다. 그래서 이들 중견작가들의 양식을 먼저 자연적이거나 인간적인 주제로 그리고 표현적이거나 구축적인 방법으 로 크게 아래 네 부분의 장르로 나누어 조명하게 되었다.

나 최소화 하고 가능한 한 객관적인 표현을 지향하는 작 품. 미니멀리즘 성향이거나 기하학적 추상미술, 혹은 회화 의 근원적인 방식으로 환원시키려는 태도에서 나온 개념 적이고 관조적인 탐구의 작품. 셋. 추상의 또 다른 경향으 로서 표현적 충동이나 열정적인 정서가 붓질이나 색채를 통해 풍부하게 드러나는 작품. 정서의 전달이 격정적이고 풍부한 표현성이 발휘되는 경향의 작품. 또는 외부의 주제 를 빌어 감정의 조화와 균형 상태를 직관하는 작품. 넷. 사 회적이거나 인간적인 문제에 관심을 두고 주관적인 내용 에 형상적인 표현을 부여하는 작품. 작가 자신을 포함해 인간 정신의 내면을 향하는 의식이나 타자와의 관계를 주 제로 실존적인 문제를 다루는 작품. 그러나 실제로는 규정적인 개념의 틀 어디에도 한정시키 기 힘든 미학적 특징을 지닌 작가들의 경우가 있을 것이 다. 그런 점을 고려한다면 이렇게 작가를 범주화시켜 단순 한 카테고리에 편입시키기보다 개별적인 성격을 부각시키 는 것이 훨씬 더 바람직할지 모른다. 특히 여러 다양성을 가진 지역화단의 구성 특성상 차라리 다채로운 모습을 있 는 그대로 열거하며 보여주는 것이 더 좋을 듯도 하다. 그 렇지만 이런 식의 유형별 분류나 양식적인 특성을 규정하 는 것이 안고 있는 피할 수 없는 단점에도 불구하고 대구 미술의 정체성을 보다 명확히 하고 그 다양함을 일목요연 하게 전달하고자 장르 구분을 시도해봤다. 사실 개별 작가 들의 작품 양식은 특정한 장르에 머물지 않고 새로운 세계 의 꾸준한 개척을 통해 작품의 폭을 얼마든지 넓혀갈 수 있 는 것이다. 그렇지만 가능한 한 작품에 감상(感傷)을 개입 시키지 않고 삶과 예술의 근본적인 문제와 직면하려는 시 도를 보여 온 점에 대해서는 일관된 자세를 견지해온 것이 요즘 세대들과 달리 중견작가들이 가진 일반적인 특징이 라고 할 수 있다. 아무쪼록 이 전시를 통해 대구미술이 지 닌 깊이와 다양성이 충분히 알려졌으면 한다.

When I was in college, I worked for 3 years at a convenience store situated near the university. It was your run-of-the-mill 24-hour one-stop shop. Most problems arose from folks driving off without paying for gas or teenagers trying to distract you while their friends pocketed the generic cigarettes from the counter display. This was in small-town, Wyoming, USA. Once I was caught off guard with a customer’s request. They had asked me if I was a “Notary Public”? At the time, I hadn’t understood the term, but now as an English teacher in Korea, I understand the “notarization” process all too well, with all the hoops and red tape it took to get here. After I understood the term, I thought it strange that someone should ask a meager gas station clerk if he had authority from the State to validate and deem documents to be official. Maybe it’s still a bizarre question, but that doesn’t mean that convenience stores are only about selling 64oz Big Gulps and stale bags of Twizzlers these days. I mention this brief back-story because here in Korea, most of us can assume that a life of convenience has been well-established here. Bus stops, taxis, and chicken hofs are just an arm’s reach outside our respective urban homes. Convenience stores, too, have services designed to keep you closer to home. The PostBox program is a great example of this. PostBox allows for participating convenience stores to receive/ship and accept/hold parcels for customers. Sometimes, getting home delivery can end up being a game of phone-tag with delivery companies, with the arranging of delivery times. So, instead of that, when you order a product from an online shopping mall and enter the address line, you can input the local, participating convenience store to receive it. “It is like an international family,” said Samira Kapadia on my No. 2 school bus one afternoon. Samira is a 7th grader at Daegu International School and a member of the school’s sole student-run club, Multi-Culture Club (MCC). She has been a member for her first full year at DIS, ever since she came to this school. No other place or group in our school can better embody the tenets of racial egalitarianism and mutual respect for different cultural backgrounds than MCC. One day in my sophomore year, it occurred to me that while more and more international students were attending DIS, there was no set place where they could interact freely—regardless of grade level, that is—without any notions of being the society’s or the school’s minorities. My 11-month stay in New Zealand as an elementary school student reminded me of how difficult it could be for ethnic minorities or cultural minorities to “fit in.” Although I was to be blessed with good-willed friends from diverse ethnic backgrounds there soon enough, certainly a meeting place for people like myself would have helped immensely. Korean students equally committed to this cause were at the forefront of MCC’s inception as well. Jennifer

Yun, a Korean American student and then a 9th grader, and Sky Oh, another Korean American student from my class, readily assented to the idea and rolled up their sleeves to help. We began to “recruit” members during lunch time, venturing to talk even to those students whom we had never gotten to know. This was a great challenge at first, and I, for one, was gripped with hesitation and anxiety alike. Now, after two years, our MCC has reached a “stable place,” as noted by Jennifer. Current member Alexander Mallary from 11th grade remarked that “the club is a great way for people of different backgrounds to come together and share their cultural heritage.” Indeed, the club has promoted a hands-on experience of another culture in order to instill a sense of understanding among students. Students have cooked cultural foods to taste them firsthand without any preconceived notions. Akash Moozhavil from 8th grade, Samira, and Yash in one meeting prepared ingredients to make a simple Indian dish. The smell of Indian spices seemed to materialize the unique value of Indian culture itself. Mrs. Liane Odom, who sponsors the club, enjoyed the dish, together with many others with a keen liking for spicy foods.

“My favorite event … was when we were selling cookies and bracelets on International Night, raising money for the UNICEF. We had so much fun making the bracelets and cookies … [It was] also a great time to get to know the new members of the club,” responded Jennifer when asked which event she had liked the most. By taking small steps, the MCC has been going global as well. With help from Sally Coleman, Enya Dewars, and Min Kyung Park from 8th grade, MCC students baked cookies and sold them on International Night at DIS last November. They also created “Multi-Culture Bracelets” for sale, using beads and strings of different sizes and colors to represent the myriad of cultures present. All the proceeds were donated to UNICEF.

For inevitable personal reasons, international students come and go. The reason for hope emerges when the places left by leaving friends are taken up by new members. In such a way, a cause like this that has the propensity to be transient still maintains its life. Jennifer said that the club had allowed her to “[interact] with more international students at our school.” Such an impact can never be undervalued in this learning place and in this age of globalization. The club now looks forward to its third year.

Yeongcheon Weekend Never a Dull Moment

he weekend of the super moon (unfortunately it was cloudy for most of Gyeongbuk) was full of adventure as Compass Journeys took off for the area around Yeongcheon the morning of June 22. About an hour away from Daegu, the area is quite lovely with a huge variety of things to see and do. Under the care of Ha Mi Young and Yujeong Lee, we started our adventure (after a short bus ride) tie dyeing scarves. Wrapping linen in rubber bands and dipping them in natural indigo dye tested the creativity of the group. While our creations were drying, we proceeded to pound rice dough to make rice cakes. Needless to say, the resultant scarves were as diverse as the bakerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dozen in our group. Serendipitously, something not planned turned out to be as attractive as the items on our agenda: a swing set brought out the child in everyone. It certainly helped that one member of our group of 13 was a young lad, Matthew.

After a traditional noodle lunch, we set off for the action part of the tour: ATV and paintball. The course was riverside and we were allowed free rein in riding for more than an hour. I especially enjoyed the part of the course where the path was flooded with water -- nothing like ATV-ing in a puddle. Whoopee! We then split into two teams for paintballing. Though not fully covered (we were only provided a mask and chest plate), a good time was had by all with only a few mouthfuls of paint and several circular bruises that were akin to an octopus hickey. The result of our battles? A tie. Back to our clean and spacious pension, we cleaned up and relaxed until dinner time. Samgyeopsal was on the menu, along with fresh greens from the area. We then boarded the bus again for a short trip up the nearby mountain to visit the local observatory. We were unable to see the stars or the super moon due to the overcast skies, but a proactive theatre did allow us to

experience the cosmos up close. The chairs even simulated movement so the rollercoaster ride in the skies left some of us a little queasy. Back to the pension for the night and partying for some (it was their turn to be queasy the following morning). A drizzly night and early morning was a perfect prelude for the morning hike after breakfast. We hiked the area above the pension with a guide who taught us about the flora of the Korean countryside and the various usages of the flowers, leaves and roots. Armed with the ubiquitous Korean gloves we picked, plucked, dug, smelled and tasted various foods that Koreans have enjoyed for centuries. It was a cool and delightful hike through the damp woods. Perhaps the most shocking thing was the scent of the chestnut tree flowers (Google it).

was quite special as the scents and coloring agents were all organic and quite wonderful. I especially appreciated the dye from pumpkin and the lavender, lemon and orange oil. As the soap bars hardened, we finished out our experience by making our own bibimbap, again with ingredients from the surrounding hills. Bellies full, armed with our own handmade scarves and soap, we boarded the bus once again to head back to Daegu. I cannot stress enough the wonderful camaraderie of this tour. I have been on a lot of these cultural tours and cannot crow enough about the care given and multiplicity of the experience. We were especially fortunate to have a small group as much more personal attention was possible. Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend Daegu Journeys!

I am leaving Korea after living here with my family for the last three years. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the citizens of Daegu for helping make my family and I feel at home these last three years. Daegu is such a wonderful and beautiful city with some of the nicest people we have ever met. I particularly would like to thank all of those that I have met through the Korean American Friendship Circle. The Korean American Friendship Circle has been recognized by many for its excellence in promoting friendship and understanding between our two nations. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the KAFC president Dr. Kim, Bum Dae and his family in promoting this fantastic organization. His tireless efforts to ensure the continued success of this program are truly noble in deed and word. I want to thank all of the KAFC senior advisors as well as senior leadership of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command for their unwavering support to this

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all of the universities that help sponsor this program and ensure that there were always superb and active students to participate in this endeavor. The KAFC concept is quite simple: Pair up an American and Korean Family, give them a few guidelines and have them sponsor some university students for a few months. The idea is to “plant a seed” for a relationship between people of two nations. Whether this “seed” produces a spring flower that only lasts a short time and turns merely into a fond memory or the seed produces a giant Oak that lasts for generations – it still strengthens the bond between our two nations. Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. There are multiple areas dedicated to similar products. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun.
