It will be the first time that the exclusive venue – which opened only in 2009 and has just 300 members – has hosted a professional tournament.
Westwood has an astonishing 20 European Tour titles to his credit – the second highest total by an Englishman after Sir Nick Faldo – and has been a mainstay of Europe’s successful Ryder Cup teams in the past decade. He also has an excellent record in the Far East, including four wins in Japan from 1996-98 and victory in the 1999 Macau Open. Els, meanwhile, has more than 60 victories worldwide including three Majors – the US Open in 16
1994 and 1997 and the British Open in 2002. He recently won the South African Open Championship for an astonishing fifth time and will be looking to make it third time lucky at the Ballantine’s Championship after top 10 finishes in the past two years. “I’ve got off to a great start this season and hopefully I can maintain this form throughout the year,” he said.

The 2010 Ballantine’s Championship produced an unforgettable finale as unheralded Australian Marcus Fraser – a player who almost gave up the game three years earlier because he was in such a slump – surprised everyone with an incredible wire-to-wire victory.

You would think that rushing to the Beijing train station at 5:30am in the morning would be a fairly simple prospect but already the city is bustling and the sidewalks are quickly filling up with people who seem deter-
mined to get in our way. My girlfriend ( Jeanie) and I decide that a taxi is a better option and so it turns out. We get to the station 40 minutes early but need 25 to actually find our train – a beautiful old green locomotive with
We have just spent 10 days in Beijing exploring the city and getting ready to board one of the many trains of the transSiberian railway. Ours will travel almost 10 000 km across China, Mongolia and Russia to arrive at our final destination of Moscow. We will spend about a week purely on the train with stops in Ulaan Baatar, Irkutsk and Lake Baikal to explore the rugged wilderness of Mongolia and the lifestyle of a rapidly changing rural Russia. 36
the universe in the Temple of Heaven and to indulge in what turned out to be my favorite - exploring on bicycles the many vibrant and action packed Hutongs all around the city. Sitting in the cabin of our train waiting for it to leave I have time to reflect on the city. For tourists the Chinese people are energetic yet indifferent, engaged yet removed. They live their lives with bursts of western interjection but are more concerned with the hustle and grind of everyday life. For me being a tourist there is like becoming an astral projection floating around the city being lucky enough to glimpse in on what is a fascinating and completely different way of life.
Beijing itself has already been a thrill. Having been there before on an extremely rushed 5 day package deal (which I can barely remember) going 37
for 10 days without any schedule is like a dream. We have time to leisurely walk the Great Wall at Simatai, suck up the energy of the night markets, stand on the Chinese center of
Tips for traveling cheaply from Korea to Beijing: We took the overnight ferry from Incheon ferry terminal to Tianjin which was only 150 000 won which saved a lot on flight
costs but got slightly ripped off traveling into Beijing from Tianjin by taking a taxi instead of the train. In Beijing we stayed at the Saga Youth Hostel which was clean and convenient for around 15 000 won a night, however there are many hostels in and around the popular city areas. Booking the trans Siberian at our individual stops also saved us a fortune in booking fees and mark ups. I will touch more on
that in part 2 – Mongolia. Be sure to look for the next installment of the Trans Siberian Travel Report.
Thanks Eddie for gett’n out there and sharing your experience on the railroad. Can’t wait for the part two!
Baseball season has finally arrived. The Samsung Lions take to the field again to follow up on their impressive season last year. Home games are always fun and usually packed. Press release and photos courtesy of the IAAF World Championship Daegu committee Translated by Park San
On August 2011,
people around the world will focus their attention to Daegu, the third largest city in South Korea, where high-technology and tradition come to merge. The 2011 IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation) holds its World Championships in Daegu, located in the center of the southeast region of Korea, with convenient network of transportations for its visitors. The IAAF World Championships takes place from August to September every two years, and it’s considered to be one of the three biggest international sports events along with the World Cup and the Summer Olympic Games. Since 1983, with its first Game held in Helsinki, Finland, 12 Games were held so far. The first and the second Games were held with 4-year cycle, but starting with the third Game in Tokyo, Japan, the Championship was regularly 41
held every two years. The IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011 organization committee strives to makes this ‘The IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011’ to be the best one in its history and is fully committed to planning and organizing this event, which will be the global festival that represents infinitely passionate and hopeful challenges of humanity towards a bright future. The goals of this event include “fulfilling peace and prosperity for humanity, the passionate festival of global participants, creating a
to become one of the central city in the global age. The Games’ mascot, “Sarbi,” is designed after the Sapsal-gae, a native Korean purebred dog(Korean Natural Monument no. 368) known for its intelligence and loyalty. Sapsalgae is considered very loyal and sociable towards humans, and with their physical agility, it is known to chase away bad spirits. Thus, this lucky mascot will prevent new era for the development of the world track and field, and global steps for the Colorful Daegu.” The main slogan, “Sprint Together for Tomorrow,” holds a wish for the development of World Championships’ identity as well as a better future for Daegu. To guide our community to collaborate in order to bring this Games to success, the sub-slogans “더 빨리 높 이 멀리, 함께 내일로 (Faster, Higher, Further, Future Together” and “비상하는 대구의 꿈, 도약하는 세계 육상 (Flying Dreams of Daegu, Leaping World track and field)” were chosen. The Games’ emblem is an embodiment of the idea that the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011is a global festival that brings diverse cultures and values together in a harmony, providing passionate vital energy to Daegu. This emblem holds a future vision for this hopeful city, the energetic Daegu
participating athletes’ misfortunes and promote the safe execution of the Games and hopefully enable new records for the athletes. The poster is an image that represents the pleasure of the wind on the face when one is running through infinite space. The dramatic moment at the end of the finishing line is drawn with eastern brushstroke style, and the finish
line tape that gets cut at the end is applied with the representing colors of the city brand’s “Colorful DAEGU” and expresses the celebration ceremony. There will be monthly updates about the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011 from now till August in the Daegu Compass. Stay tuned.

The Yeongnam Ilbo Radiation fears stop imports of 이 은 경 기자 Japanese food

s worries over radiation from the damaged nuclear reactors in Japan continue to spread, some local major retailers have stopped importing select seafood products from Japan in response to consumer worries. Lotte Mart, the third-largest discount store chain in Korea, said yesterday that it will cease sales of whole pollack starting today. In Korea, whole pollack is almost exclusively imported from Japan. “The safety [of the whole pollack] was confirmed
while clearing customs, but consumer concerns that the shipment might have been exposed to radiation continued to mount,” said a Lotte Mart official. “Lotte Mart has decided to sell whole pollack only until [today] when the existing inventory is expected to run out.” With the sale of whole pollack being discontinued for the time being, Lotte Mart said that it had obtained a 30 percent additional supply of frozen pollack from Russia as a viable substitute.
As for mackerel, Lotte Mart has switched from Japan to buying frozen mackerel from Norway in the face of expensive domestic mackerel prices, both whole and frozen. Homeplus will also stop selling whole pollack from Japan until it becomes stable and a thorough scanning system for radiation by the government is set up. Major retailer Shinsegae Department Store has also struck Japanese seafood from its import list. It stopped importing Pacific saury and whole pollack from Japan immediately after the earthquake. “We expect to be able to be-

Weekly English church service in Daegu 김 제 덕 기자
Young-Ju Jail church (minister 허승부) offers English service for multi-cultural families and foreign teachers. The services started last Dec 26th. 11 multi-cultural families from The Philippines and four native English teachers who are from England, U.S.A. and
Canada are attending the service. This English worship service could happen because of Ladente minister who came to Korea as a laborer in JangSu agricultural complex from Philippines. He had experience as a minister in Taiwan.
Every Sunday, it starts at 11:40am to 12:30pm and lasts for 50 minutes. After the sermon, they have lunch together and share their feelings about how hard it is living in a different country.

In the past 20 years, it’s name has been changed four times, but ‘WooBang’ was always there. This time ‘WooBang’ will be gone, but cheer up Daegu, the facility is still the same.
Buffett later left Daegu on his private jet and flew to Seoul to meet President Lee Myungbak to discuss global economic conditions and the impact of the Japanese earthquake on global markets.

Help Japan Benefit
Concert

An estimated 3.7 million won was raised from the concert, and all of it is being transferred to the Japanese Red Cross.

t’s hot inside and it’s hard to move; don’t even mention the smell of alcohol and sweat that permeate the downtown drinking haunt URBAN like an odd perfume. Yet despite the seemingly stifling atmosphere, not a single person is complaining, and yelps of joy erupt as The March Kings vocalist and guitarist jumps into the air with a smiling gleaming on his face. It’s a penultimate moment of sheer visceral rock ‘n’ roll joy. What makes it different than any other Daegu concert, that has been and will continue to be held, is that it is not for the street cred or to make a quick buck. It’s done to help those affected by one of the worst disasters of the 21st century. We were all horrified by the images we saw on TV of the ultra high-tech world of Japan being consumed by waves of destruction and tragedy. 51
The devastation, the horror and the looming after effects shocked us all. In a collaborative effort to make a contribution to the on-going relief effort, booking/show production collectives SuperColorSuper/Diy Daegu Live and Guerilla League, and popular local Daegu bar/club/ hangout URBAN, went into quick action, organizing the “Help Japan Benefit Concert.” All three regularly hold shows helping to foster the energy and vibrancy of the local Daegu scene. Plans included an art market comprised of seven artists of all styles (painting, live graffiti and sketching, and hand-crafted jewelry), as well as eight Daegu music/dance/performance acts, comprising various genres ranging from Korean traditional, to folk,
rock, punk, pop, ultra-heavy metal, and hip-hop. It’s now two weeks after the disaster, 7 p.m on Saturday night. One hour to showtime and Urban is empty. Wires are being checked, bottles are being stocked and refilled as artists and musicians are setting up. There’s a calm, but now the wait and the questions that come with it before any big show. Will the more-than 200 Facebook RSVP’s show? Will the bands make it on time? Do people know how to get here? Yet as 8:15pm rolls on and solo rock artist Piece of Marriya goes on stage, magically, more than 40 people are standing in the
room. 40 minutes later the 40 has multiplied to more than 80 as frenetic Korean folk duo Gun Hoon Shi takes the stage. The number swells to more than 100 as skate-punkers Golden Ticket light up the stage with their bubbly punk melodies. 200 crowd the stage as death metal outfit Axcutor sends an aggressive audio assault on the crowd, and they love it. Korean traditionalists meet hip-hop b-boys Nondani Project w/ Cri:ve enthrall audiences with hypnotic beats and transcendental traditional Korean performance art and breakdancing. By then, near 500 Daegu residents, both foreign and Korean, have piled in to watch The March Kings, Levine and Death By Kimchi round out the night with continued great sounds and ultra-positive vibes. In the end, despite the heat and mobility issues and the more-than apparent ease to get jaded in the music business and business in general, this is a night in which everything has come together seamlessly, with no petty arguments. Whether audience member, artist, musician, promoter, or business owner, everyone realizes that they are a part of a greater cause - a mass global humanitarian effort to help people in need. It’s clear that everyone’s having a good time for a good cause. Distinctly, a sign posted on URBAN’s wall, says it all - an X drawn through the word, ‘Nationalism’ and a simple statement directly underneath that reads, “Only think about Japanese people!” It was a moment of sheer unity.
