he most recognizable heroine in opera history appears in DIOF. Carmen, red skirted cigarette in mouth and cross-legged, is the archetypal freespirited gypsy woman. She enchants audiences, charmingly singing the famous aria ‘Habanera’ with the libretto ‘Love is a rebellious bird. That nothing can tame.’ Carmen, a masterpiece of Bizet as well as a legend of Opera, closes the glorious curtain upon the festival. It is the most immortal work which speaks eloquently for the emotions of French music, and it remains the work most cherished by opera lovers around the world. The opera evoked a great sensation in the opera community when it was produced through its familiar melodies, impassioned music, unique characters and refined composition technique. Carmen is the representative sensuous opera of France and shows the essence of orthodox opera by French producers and dignified performers. It tells the tragic love story of a passionate gypsy woman called Carmen and a staff sergeant named Don Jose and is set in the exotic locale of Seville, Spain. 10

Ten tenors who are highly active at home and abroad decorate the splendid ending of 10th Daegu International Opera Festival. Celebrating the 10th anniversary, electrifying performances with a powerful voice and outstanding singing ability is comprised of vibrant and powerful opera aria, songs, and so on with ambition for the soaring festival. It will be a special concert which shows full of charm and character of 10 famous vocalists and a beautiful harmony at the same time.

very once in a while, I get to visit a restaurant that is so remarkable that it practically writes its own review. Real Kitchen Hong is one of those places. Opened in September, Real Kitchen Hong is the second restaurant that Dae hong Park has owned and operated in Daegu. The first, a cafeteria-style establishment near Seobu Bus Terminal, was open for six years and saw a great deal of success. This time around, Dae hong wanted to try his hand at a more stylish eatery and make use of his talents as a visual designer.

Between the décor, the food, the drinks, and the atmosphere, it’s clear that this extremely friendly and hospitable owner has accomplished just that. The location of Real Kitchen Hong and its décor are this restaurant’s most endearing and readily apparent qualities. The 2nd floor dining area is very spacious with sufficient seating to accommodate upwards of 50 patrons. The space is decorated in an interesting style that I would describe as a mix between rustic and Scandinavian. Exposed track lighting illuminates the eclectic and mismatched

furnishings, many of which were made by Mr. Park himself. Tables are arranged far enough apart that one can experience a real sense of privacy. The north and south walls consist of expansive windows which create a feeling of openness. The best part, though, is the view. The restaurant’s placement atop a massive hill allows for diners to feast their eyes upon what has to be one of the greatest views a second floor establishment in Daegu can possibly have. Facing north, a great deal of the city can be seen including Woobang Tower and(Eworld), on a clear day, Palgong Mountain. If you can not arrange for a seat with a north-facing view, fear not. You can always move up a floor to the awesome rooftop patio which features coffee tables, wicker furniture, and an even better view of the city. The rooftop, which has seating for over 30 people, is also very spacious and is home to the gardens where Mr. Park grows many of the herbs used in his cooking. The location itself puts Real Kitchen Hong ahead of the competition, and its menu solidifies that position. The food menu is small enough to list in its entirety. It consists of: BBQ Chicken Plate, Real Fish and Chips, Real Fried Chicken, Real Steak Salad,

and Spaghetti (cream or tomato). All of the items are priced between 11,000 and 17,000 won and the portions are sized for the intention of sharing. For our visit, we ordered the BBQ Chicken Plate which was phenomenal albeit a bit unconventional, by Korean standards at least. This massive platter consisted of crunchy fried, boneless chicken covered in a tangy sauce; a mound of amazing seasoned fries; mashed potatoes topped with whipped cream; and some of the freshest and best coleslaw I have ever had. Another unexpected twist with this platter comes in

the form of whipped cream yogurt and lemon basil dipping sauces for the chicken and fries. I was a bit skeptical at first but I really warmed up to (and shoveled in) these alternatively accompanied foods. We also tried the tomato spaghetti which rivaled any that I have tasted at any other restaurant in Daegu. For dessert, we were treated to Real Kitchen Hongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special papingsu made from frozen milk instead of ice; a very tasty follow-up to a wonderful meal. Though itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the emphasis, Real Kitchen Hong is about more than the superbly prepared food. Mr. Park

REAL KITCHEN - ALL HONG says that he hopes the restaurant becomes a bit of a lounge and hangout where a few drinks can be consumed in a laid back and comfortable atmosphere. The style of the restaurant seems conducive to this idea, but the owner really drives this concept home with his drink menu and attitude toward corkage. Currently, Real Kitchen Hong offers Hoegaarden and OB on tap with bottles of Hite available as well. Bottles of Jägermeister and Bombay Gin are available for only 60,000 won as well as a variety of mixers. If you’re in the mood for

something else, Mr. Park says that guests should absolutely feel free to bring in their own beverages for a very small corkage fee. If you’re feeling like a less festive beverage,

call ahead for a reservation, especially for a party of five or more (053.628.2929). Real Kitchen Hong is open seven days a week from 3pm – midnight and serves food from 5pm – midnight. They are located right next to Daemyeong Middle School at the very top of the hill on the 2nd floor of the large dark grey building. The nearest subway stop is Anjirang but it is a bit of a hike, directly uphill. For an easier time, just give the address to your cab driver:

fter seeing adverts for Handi Indian food delivery constantly posted on the Daegu facebook groups, my friends and I decided that we had to see what all the fuss was about. Coming from the UK, takeaway curries are a bit of a home comfort, up there with fish and chips and cups of tea, and decent Indian food is one home comfort that I hadn’t been able to find in Daegu. I have been to a couple of Indian restaurants here, but they haven’t been up to the standard of the Indian food we get back home. 대구 페이스북 그룹에 포스팅 된 한디 인도 음식 배달 광 고를 자주 (거의 끊임없이?) 본 후, 나와 친구들은 이 모든 야단법석이 무엇에 관한 것인지 알아봐야만 하겠다고 결 정했다. 영국에서 온 나에게 테이크 아웃 카레는 피시 앤 칩스, 차, 그리고 제대로 된 인도 음식과 더불어 가정의 편 안함이었지만, 대구에서는 좀처럼 그 고향의 안락함을 찾 기가 어려웠다. 전에 이곳에서 인도 음식점 몇 군데에 가 보았지만, 내가 고향에서 먹던 인도 음식의 수준에 미치지 는 못하였다.

By special request of the Daegu Compass editor, I undertook to write a review of the place to let other cravers of Indian food know what they could get here in Daegu, and more specifically what could be delivered to their house. 대구 컴패스의 편집자의 특별한 부탁으로, 나는 인도 음식 을 갈망하는 다른 사람들을 위해 대구의 인도 음식점, 더 자세하게 배달이 가능한 인도 음식에 대한 리뷰 작성을 맡 기로 하였다.

Handi is located by Bukbu bus terminal, so for many people a little far out of town, but fortunately they offer free delivery on orders over 30,000 won. Offering a reasonable variety of dishes, there is something that can tickle anybody’s taste buds. Their full menu is available on their facebook page . I personally went for an old favourite of mine, a chicken Jalfrezi,, but collectively we ordered a few more dishes – korma, karahi, chicken jalfrezi, a mutton set, rice, naan breads and some samosas. The total cost for enough food for six people was 83,000 won, which in my opinion is pretty reasonable; the amount we ordered more than filled us.

한디는 많은 사람들에게 시내와 조금 떨어진 북부 버스 터 미널에 위치해 있는데, 다행히도 그들은 3만원 이상 주문 시 무료 배달을 실시한다. 적당한 종류의 요리를 제공하 는 이 음식점의 요리에는 그 누구의 미각도 자극하는 무 언가가 있다. 그들의 풀 메뉴는 페이스북 페이지에서 확인 할 수 있다. 나는 개인적으로 내가 제일 좋아해온 치킨 잘 프레지를 시켰지만, 우리는 코르마, 카라히, 치킨 잘프레 지, 양고기 세트, 밥, 난 빵과 사모사 몇 개를 더 시켰다. 여 섯 명에게 충분한 양의 가격은 총 8만 3천원이었는데, 내 생각에는 우리가 시킨 것 보다 우리의 배를 채우고도 남는 양을 생각하면 꽤 합리적인 가격이었다.

We ordered the food to come to an address close to Duryu Park, and were told to wait around an hour. However, it took almost an hour and three quarters, so I would recommend ordering around two hours before you want to eat, to allow time for the food to be cooked and delivered. When the food arrived it was hot, and we were ravenous by that point! The food also was not labeled, so for those unfamiliar

HANDI WHAT? with Indian cuisine a lot of guess work may have to be employed. 우리는 두류 공원 근처의 주소로 음식을 시켰는데, 약 한 시간 정도를 기다리라는 소리를 들었다. 하지만, 실제로는 거의 1시간 45분 정도가 걸렸기에, 음식이 요리되고 배달 되는 시간을 감안하면 식사 2시간 전 정도에 주문하는 것 을 추천한다. 뜨거운 음식이 배달되었을 때쯤 우리는 무척 굶주려있었다. 게다가 음식의 이름이 각각 표시되지 않았 기에, 인도 음식이 익숙하지 않은 이에게는 그저 추측하는 방법 밖에 없다.

The jalfrezi was arguably the winner out of the main dishes – tender chicken with plenty of tomatoes, onions and peppers in a delicious sauce with undertones of tomato. This was all the better soaked up with fluffy rice (not like the standard Korean version) and an authentic garlic naan bread. A word of warning – the portions of rice are enormous – two of them easily fed the six of us. 토마토 베이스의 맛있는 소스와 풍부한 양의 토마토, 양 파, 그리고 고추가 들어간 텐더 치킨 요리 잘프레지는 메 인 음식 중 거의 완벽한 승자였다. 이 요리는 한국식 밥과

HANDI WHAT? tion, but I could have easily eaten four by myself! 하지만 제일 최고의 음식이 아직 남아있었다. 바로 사모 사였다. 바삭거리고 향이 가득한, 가장 특징적인, 이 음 식은 만장일치로 10점 만점에 10점이었다. 우리가 기회 가 있다면 이것을 더 주문했을 텐데, 1인분 당 4개가 나 오지만 4개 모두 내가 쉽게 다 먹어 치울 수 있었을 것 이다.

The feedback from my friends was largely positive too; the korma was a little more like a bhuna, however; this could be because we are used to more English-style Indian food, and the meat content was a little low compared with the jalfrezi. However, it was still an appetising meal. A similar comment was made regarding the mutton set; a generous sized portion in which the spices and flavours were delicious but it was a little short of meat. The karahi was said to be tasty, but maybe a little on the mild side for the eater’s preference. 나의 친구들의 피드백도 전체적으로 긍정적인 편이었다. 코르마는 부나와 약간은 비슷하였는데, 이것은 우리가 영국식 인도음식에 더 익숙해져 있어서 일수도 있다. 그 리고 잘프레지에 비하면 내용물로 들어가는 고기의 양이 조금 적은 편이었다. 그래도 음식은 맛있었다. 양고기 세 트에 대해서도 비슷한 의견이 나왔는데, 스파이스와 향 이 맛있으며 양도 풍부했으나, 고기의 양이 상대적으로 적었다. 카라히는 맛있다고들 얘기했지만 먹는 사람의 취향에 따라서는 조금 심심한 편일 수도 있다.

This was the second time I have ordered from the Handi restaurant, and both times have been positive experiences – delicious authentic Indian food at a reasonable price delivered to your door. othing is really more exciting than getting a bit risky with your dinner and by risk, I don’t mean trying out a new recipe. I mean knowingly eating something that could cause potential death. Why the hell not right? You only live once. This particular death trap is what we like to call Blowfish or Fugu ( Japan) or Bo Go 복어 (Korea) a Japanese delicacy that has migrated over to Korea where they have added their own twist. Blowfish is the most lethally poisonous fish in the world and a small dose of its death inducing tetrodoxin and your well, pretty screwed. Death by asphyxiation, while you are still fully conscious, with no known

antidote? Sounds like a fun dinner right? Luckily every single Fugu

Chef in the world has to have a certificate to be able to prepare Fugu. These Chefs go through a grilling process of over a few years where they ultimately have to prepare and eat their own dish. Pass = Live, Fail = Death and this system has been strictly enforced in Korea. It’s pretty safe to say that no matter what Blowfish restaurant you end up in, you’ll still be alive by the second course. We headed to a great Blowfish restaurant out in Sangin. Take Exit 4 from the subway. Walk straight for about ten minutes and it will be on your right hand side on the second floor. The name of the restaurant is 복어마을 and there is

We had the set menu which costs us each 13, 500W. One set can easily serve 4 people. First on the menu was blowfish skin salad. The spikes had been removed and the skin sliced into small pieces mixed with spicy red sauce, onions, carrots and cabbage. To be honest it didn’t really have much flavor as the sauce was quite overpowering. The skin was chewy and soft and tasted like nothing. I was just snacking on the side dishes of fried fish, cucumbers, dried fish and japchae (noo-

dles). At this point I was starting to get more excited waiting in anticipation for my mouth to start tingling and my breath to quicken, with my life flashing before my eyes as my body falls into paralyses. Well…..clearly that never happened. Guess our chef was really good. No tetrodoxin for us.

Second on the menu came a big steaming plate of blowfish flesh and bean sprouts in yet another spicy red sauce. This we cooked over the gas stove on our table. The fish was delicious and melted in my mouth. There were a lot of bones and the strong flavor of the bean sprouts was a little overwhelming. Taipei is affordable for the budget traveler. The city is safe and easy to navigate even if you don’t know a word of Mandarin. The subway is modern, efficient, clean and ridiculously cheap. Budget accommodations are cheaper than Hong Kong rates. There is a wide selection of street food, from fried noodles to papaya smoothies that are tasty and cheap. Trinkets and souvenirs are reasonably priced, and I didn’t feel like vendors were gouging me. On top of that, Taipei residents exuded warm positive vibes, which made the city so much more endearing. 타이페이는 예산이 한정된 여행자에 게 알맞은 곳이다. 도시는 안전하고 중국어를 한 마디도 못하여도 길을 찾기 쉬운 편이다. 지하철은 현대적이 며, 효과적이고, 깨끗할 뿐만 아니라 터무니 없이 싸다. 홍콩 요금에 비해 숙박 예산도 저렴한 편이다. 또한 맛 있고 싼 볶음 국수로부터 파파야 스 무디까지의 다양한 선택 범주의 길거 리 음식을 제공한다. 작은 장신구들과 기념품들은 합리적으로 가격이 책정 되어있으며, 상인들이 나에게 바가지 를 씌우고 있다는 느낌도 들지 않았 다. 무엇보다, 타이페이 주민들은 따 뜻하고 긍정적인 분위기를 발산 시키 고 있었고 그로 하여금 도시를 더욱 더 사랑스럽게 만들었다.

While we were nibbling on that, THE BEST course arrived. Fried Bok!! (Fried Blowfish) hell anything fried is delicious but this was pretty darn good. The batter was crispy and thick and the meat inside was tender and cooked to perfection. It also came with fried green peppers which was a great addition. The final course was blowfish soup. Just a few chunks of meat, some bean sprouts and a little garlic. At this point the waitress also took our second course plate and filled it with rice which we put back onto the heat to create some kind of ricey pudding with the leftover juices. Always got to have rice. Dancing with the devil at dinner was quite an exciting experience and is definitely a must while you are in Korea.

There are many buses, so look up the correct one to take to your destination. Then, do yourself a favor and buy an EasyCard public transit card at the nearest subway station. Fares are based on distances and it’s a hassle to get individual trip tokens. If it’s dinnertime, make sure not to eat a proper meal at a sit down joint. Experience Taipei, and take yourself to the nearest night market. Night markets are known for food and shopping. Food is served in small portions, and there might be a plastic table and chair available to sit down and enjoy your food, but it’s rare. Clothing and souvenir choices abound. Haggle away if you’re in the mood.

At some night markets, there will be hibachi style food carts where you can sit down and watch the

TAIPEI food cooked in front of you. Most menus will not have pictures or English translations. The owner or cook probably doesn’t speak English, so close your eyes and point to a random item. Eating things that you don’t know what they’re made of, for the sake of curiosity, can be a bit of a shocker. Coagulated pork blood with rice noodles covered in crushed peanuts on a stick was one surprise that didn’t taste that bad. Finally, don’t forget to buy a giant cup of bubble tea to wash it all down. Some vendors label it as “frog eggs” on account of the tapioca looking like frog eggs. There’s a variety, so try something you can’t otherwise get in Korea. For non-edible adventures, grab a subway brochure. It lists major cultural and tourist attractions and the nearest subway station. Regardless of your views on the use of pandas in Chinese foreign policy, go to the Taipei Zoo and see Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan. If you want cycling fun, go to Tamsui, near Danshui Station, and rent a bike. Unless you’re going on a weekday, opt for walking instead of biking because the area will be crowded. There is a shopping district along the waterfront, north of the subway station. Finally, take a day trip to Jiufen. Don’t be deterred if it’s raining. The red lantern lined streets of this quaint town and the surrounding 26

Taking into account all that Taipei had to offer, from the cultural sites to the street food, it was a worthwhile place to visit. would never have called myself a "hiker" before moving to Korea. But, in a country seventy percent covered in forest carpeted mountains, I feel comfortable enough labelling myself as such now. It's become just as important for me to explore the natural world of a foreign country just as much as understand it's culture. Landscapes, seascapes, and all the flora and fauna that call it home have immense influence in shaping a cultural identity, language, cuisine and ideals. So over the past Chuseok holiday, on a brief jaunt to Jeju-do I knew that reaching the summit of Mount Hallasan would be at the top of my bucket list. It's ironic that the tallest mountain in South Korea should be found offshore, but the 1,950M Hallasan is only a mere 35 metres taller than the mainland's highest peak, Jirisan. Korea's mountains are mere foothills when compared to other ranges across the globe, but Hallasan is a dominating and towering sight that looms over all of Jeju island in a subtle way. From a distance the slopes are shallow and the peak unpronounced, but this is because Hallasan, and in fact all of Jeju are born from the now dormant volcano crater at the top. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is beautifully preserved and maintained, and this is partially due to the fact that there are no

backcountry trails, camping, or cooking permitted in the park. Every climber must ascend and descend in the same day, and these numbers are monitored. There are cut-off points for hikers where, if

you don't make it before 12:30, you'll be turned around . Being a little intimidated by the length of the trails (between 8.7 and 9.6km, one way) and the encontinued on p30

JEONGDONGJIN - A SEASIDE TOWN

MOUNT HALLASAN: THE ROOF OF KOREA forced cut off times, we decided to hit the Gwaneumsa trail at dawn. The sky was dull, the air moist and we could see our breath, but with layers on and backpacks full of veggies and Snickers we started out on a good clip, spirits high. For the next four hours and thirty-four minutes we passed a series of lava tubes, fault lines, and dry creek beds. The ups and downs of the valleys reflected our spirits. My calves and shins rejoicing at flat ground, and my heart and lungs cursing at the rock steps. Every few hundred metres higher, the soil and greenery would change. From dark black, to PEI red, to caramel brown the soil is awash of pastel; the forests here are definitely different than the mainland. The trees and rocks are covered in a thick and enchanting florescent moss, inspiring scenes of The

Shire. The path is a mix of natural rock, boardwalk, and constructed stairs, and at around 1,200M when the clouds ferociously rolled in everything became precariously wet and slippery. The real appeal, despite reaching the roof of Korea, is the giant crater lake at the peak. The further we got, the cloudier and windier it became and it was soon all too clear there would be no view at the summit. And honestly, it was disappointing to make it to the top only to be whipped by a ferociously freezing wind in a dense fog with nothing to see, not to mention being breathless, exhausted, and soaking. But what I can appreciate about the entire eight-hour, thirteen minute trek was the subtly Hallasan offers.

The mountain offers insight into the whole of Jeju-do. I learned a lot about the island's heritage just by exploring Hallasan. They say that "Jeju is Hallasan and Hallasan is Jeju" and only after the hiking trip could I understand it. It is clear that the mountain forms the literal, and spiritual backbone of the island. From the matriarchal lineage of it's culture to the Hallabong oranges that grow on it's southern slopes. There are no limestone cliffs, or towering maples to arch your neck at. The beaches aren't fine white sand, and the water is far from tropical. There is beauty to be found in the dew on the overgrown ferns, and the liquid lava rock. Nothing is spelt out for you, it's just there for the taking.

Organizing the hike was easy.

From the airport, take a taxi to Gwaneumsa camp site, for around 13,000W. (The only designated camping area in the park). The camp site, which is way more legitimate than anybody could expect is at the foot of the trail of the same name and is a great place to get an early start the next morning. There is only one shelter at 6.4KM in, however; it is simply a cold empty building with nothing to offer. The trails are not commercial at all and there is nowhere to buy extra water, food or supplies so make sure you bring everything with you. There is a fresh water spring about two-thirds of the way up. The trail is well marked and measured to monitor your progress. The emergency route markers are also a comforting site to see in case of an accident. It is quite the intense trail, so don't forget you have to save your energy for the way back down!

ave you ever felt like you needed to escape the monotony of the city? Do you find yourself going to the same places, doing the same thing, seeing the same people? If you want to escape the urban surroundings for a more relaxed, nature and historic oriented environment, Daegu has several options for you.

First off, there is a little-known area of Daegu called the Bullodong Tombs which is only a short bus ride away from downtown (you can take the 101, 101-1, 401, Palgong 1 and the Express 1 bus to Bullo-dong Tomb Park). This is not your typical cemetery; the Bullo-dong Tombs were discovered in the second half of the 20th century and they date from the 5th and 6th century. The mounds in this park are presumed to hold the remains of the first ruling powers of the area. This park also has a hiking course comprising of more than 2 kilometers. Now that fall is upon us the Bullo-dong Tombs will be a great place for seeing the changing colors of the leaves. After you are done walking the hills of the tombs park, you may want to head to the Donghwasa temple to do some meditating. For the modest price of 2,500â&#x201A;Š, you can have access to the most famous temple in this city. If you continued on p34

GETTING TO THE TOP-PALGONSAN have never visited a temple before, Donghwasa will surely take your breath away with recently remodeled and freshly painted buildings. Once you are done looking at the beautiful buildings inside and out (make sure you take your shoes off before entering any building!) you should take a short walk to see the biggest Buddha in Korea, if not one of the biggest in Asia. One of the great advantages of this Buddhist temple is that it has some of the freshest, cleanest and coolest air in our area. The 401, the Express 1 and the Daegu City Tour buses will get you there. If you don't feel adventurous enough to ride the bus all the way to the temple, a taxi from the downtown area will cost you around 20,000₩. Feeling a bit hungry after hiking all over the Palgong mountain area? You don't have to worry as there are many options to choose from. If you ask anyone what the most famous dish of this area is they will more than likely say duck. Duck is prepared in different ways (stuffed with rice, vegetables and nuts, or grilled) and it is de-li-cious. But, as this is not a meal for everyone's taste, there are other dishes that will satisfy your empty stomach. Not feeling like eating meat? Try the 산책정식 (san-chaek-jong-sik) or a table d'hote meal with wild herbs and vegetables which costs around 12,000₩. If chicken is more up your alley you should have the 촌닭백숙 (chon-dalkbaek-suk) or boiled chicken with rice and ginseng. It feeds 3 to 4 people and costs around 35,000₩. However, this dish is slow food so make sure to order a 버섯파전 (beo-sot-pa-jeon) or korean-style mushroom pancake as a starter dish (10,000₩).

Mt. Palgong is a quick getaway filled with activities for families, couples, friends, or the solo hiker. The cable car can take you right to the top of this mountain for the best view of the city and access to a peaceful bit of nature, hard to find in the hustle and bustle of the year’s busiest season. The cable car itself is seven minutes long each way and costs 8,000₩round trip for an adult or 5,000₩ for a child. If you only want a one-way ticket (as some people choose to hike up or down) it’s 5,000₩ adult price or 3,000₩ child. You buy your tickets at the cable car station, where you can also pick up souvenirs or snacks. Souvenirs include traditional Korean jewelry boxes, key-chains with norigae (노 리개- a Korean accessory typically worn on hanboks), pencil cases, and toys for children.

April, you can expect a long line to get on and off the cable car. It’s not too long though, maybe ten minutes to board, and then you’re off! Hopefully you can go on a clear day, without fog, and then you can see all of Daegu at your feet. I’m definitely thinking about going on a snowy day, I’m sure the sight would be breath-taking and the cable car remains open during the snowy weather. Regardless of when you go, the scene is still amazing. Being up so high with the wind blowing around you and the tops of trees at your feet, it really makes you feel like you’re on top of the world.

Winter is coming.

Ski season is here! With a ski season that lasts from, at best, late November to early March, you have to work quickly to get your days in. Korea has 17 ski resorts, mainly located in the Northeast Gangwan Province. The mountains in Korea are not known internationally for their amazing elevations, but they do offer some decent runs and it is worth checking it out, if just for a weekend. In lieu of the short season we offer a short introduction to skiing and snowboarding in Korea.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grind out some stats first. The heavy hitters include the recently named hosts of the 2018 Winter Olympics Yongpyong Resort and Alpensia Resort. While Muju, High One and Phoenix Park are the biggest and best. These are some of the most popular resorts in Korea. The 2018 Winter Olympic Mountains Yongpyong Resort With an average snowfall of 250cms a year (typical snowfall in Gangwan province) Yongpyong Resort offers 4,300 acres of ter-

rain 700-1,458m above sea level, according to the resort homepage. They have 31 slopes and 14 lifts including 2 half pipes and 1 cable car. They have a cross-country trail that is 15km long. They can easily accommodate rentals with their 3,000 sets of skis and snowboards. Yongpyong was an easy choice for the Olympics because of its ability to accommodate the Alpine and snowboarding competitions. Alpensia Resort Alpensia Resort is a quaint hill with 6 slopes and 3 lifts. This

WINTER IS COMING mountain will be the site of the 2018 Pyeongchang ski jump, bobsled, cross-country skiing and biathlon events. This site, much like Cypress Mountain in Vancouver, is the smaller more viewer friendly venue to its larger Alpine oriented counterpart. Popular Demand High One Resort High One Resort is one of the most popular snow destinations and one of the easiest to get to from Daegu. High One has one of the longest runs in Korea (4.2 km). 18 slopes at 1,345 meters above sea level this mountain is good for all levels. In the village surrounding High One also has a casino, which is open to Koreans and foreigners. Beware though this casino gets very busy. This resort is about 5 hours from Daegu. Phoenix Park Phoenix Park is one of the largest ski resorts in Korea. With its 21 slopes and 9 lifts (including one 8-seater gondola) it also has one of Koreaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best parks. The mountain has also added some new features such as Moguls and will be used for the 2018 Olympics as well according to Korea Tourism. This Resort takes about 5 hours to get to from the city. Muju Resort Muju is one of the biggest ski resorts in Korea and its also less than two hours from the city. Its Silk Road Slope is 6.1km long (longest in Korea) and designed for beginners and intermediate riders. Worth a shred! The resort is divided into 2 sections (Manseon base with 12 slopes and Seolcheon Base with 10 slopes). Muju is also home to some relaxing hot springs for your sore butt after a rough day. How to get there Getting to Resorts is easy on the weekend. There are tons of individual tour companies that have pickup spots all over the city. Sinmae-dong, Dong-A department store and Manchon are a few. There are facebook groups including I Love Daegu that run huge blowout parties/ snow events throughout the season. SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING IN KOREA resorts are built with beginners in mind with tons of storage lockers and rental gear. Feel free to head up with your warmest jacket and be able to rent boots, gloves, pants and board. Although quite necessary on snowy days, goggles are a little more difficult to get. Don’t worry though it is possible with a deposit. If you’re not sure about how to ask or are worried for any reason about getting the right gear for the job just feel free to jump on board on one of the tour buses or many different group run trips out of the city. Summary If it’s sweet champagne powder you’re looking for, you better get on a plane to Japan. If you try to look at snow conditions for the day on the mountain you choose you will not find it. The conditions are consistently groomed and packed. Don’t bother trying to find any tree skiing in Korea as slopes are generally roped and sometimes even fenced off. Though the mountains are small and on weekends can be over crowded, the Korean skiing and riding scene is worth a season. Get up to get down, repeat!

I know you always see Koreans on the subway rapidly tapping away at their smart phones playing either Angry Birds or Anipang and who's to say you're not on the other end competing with them? But, if you want to come across as the Rico Suave of Korean culture, you gotta bust out a few must-have Korean apps to help you get around this city and

First, spot the bus stop sign: Whip out that sexy smartphone, call up your app and do the following:

is ending its Autumn 2012 season with a laugh and not a sniffle. “After the heavy themes we tackled in Closer, we wanted to do something fun; something with costumes, and laughter, not cheating and name calling,” says Managing Director, Rachael Brownell. “We needed something that was big and over the top and we found that in Alice.” 대구 극단은 2012년 가을 시즌을 훌 쩍거림이 아닌 웃음으로 마무리하고 있다. “클로저에서 보여주었던 무거 운 테마 이후 우리는 무언가 신나는 것을 하고 싶었습니다. 속이고 욕하 는 것이 아닌 의상과 웃음으로요,”라 고 전무 이사 레이첼 브라우넬이 말 했다. “우리는 크고 과장된 것이 필요 했는데 앨리스에서 그것을 찾아볼 수 있었습니다.”

Based on the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice in America-Land follows young Alice through her television to a land where caterpillars are self-help gurus, the Cheshire Cat is a scandal hungry reporter, the Red Queen wants all the oil, the Hatter and the Hare are mad about comedy and everyone is afraid of the BIG ONE. “Essentially, it’s a look at what Wonderland would have been like if it was America in the 80’s”, says Assistant Director, Toni Rose. “A lot of the ideals that were indicative of the West in the 80’s are here; capitalism, a fear of Big Brother and the need for oil. There are all the familiar political themes, but with 44

This marks the second full length show of the DTT’s 2011/2012 Season. The troupe has been gaining some serious momentum this year and has expanded in many

ways. After the success of the “Mono-log Night”, several members took part in the BADA International Performing Arts Festival in Pohang. When asked about the show, troupe member Jarrod Clegg said, “The show in Pohang gave us a chance to blow off some steam and make a name for ourselves outside of Daegu.” Clegg, now infamous for his Shamlet monologue has been with the troupe for 2 years and is looking forward to his role in “Alice”. After Pohang, the DTT was invited to perform at the Bongsan Cultural Arts Center. Founded in 2008 by Kristen Myers, the DTT has been steadily growing and expanding, performing not just at local theatres, but arts festivals and other venues as well. The troupe is always on the lookout for new talent and with the casting of the new show they welcomed 15 newcomers. “It’s been amazing to see how many people are interested in participating. Not just through acting, but on the production side as well. We now have a full blown production team that will help us develop even more. t all started on the 5th of October at Kolon Concert Hall in Duryu Park with my friends from Mannam. An international volunteer group that is participating for this sports festival with foreign supporters to promote this National Sports Festival. They also have foreigners to participate and experience various events in Daegu. After the opening speech by the mayor of Daegu (Kim, Bum-il), a welcoming speech by a city councilman and the superintendent of Daegu education, there were cultural performances by Samulnori ( drummers , horn and gong players that danced). They whipped their heads and the hats they had on had a rod with a ribbon on the end and it went around, down, back and forth to the beat of their drums. Real cool!

93RD SPORTS DAY There was a singer that sung Daegu Style, along with the Samsung Lions cheerleaders. After all of the performances, they showed a video from last year’s International Sports Festival. After it was all said and done, we took a group photo with the mayor. Now comes the main event from Oct. 11th to Oct. 17th at 68 sporting teams (62 in Daegu, 6 in other cities) with nearly 28,000 participants competing in 45 different sports. Really impressive!! The opening ceremony was at Daegu stadium and the place was packed. I couldn’t see an open seat anywhere. There was a drum performance, 139 Sculpture performance and dance parade. Also a VIP welcoming performance. The VIPs were the mayor of Daegu and the president of Korea , Lee Myung-bak. After the players entrance the opening was declared and they hoisted the flags. The torch arrived with an athlete in a wheelchair then passed on to several others before the stadium torch was lit. This was awesome. Next was a Magnolia performance followed by the performance of Sonyeonjae with the Municipal Dance Troupe. The next performer is why everyone was there. (In my opinion) Psy had over 100,000 people doing Gangnam Style. He sang about ten songs and put on a good concert. Ending the evening was a spectacular fireworks and laser show. It seemed to go on forever but in actually it went on for about twenty minutes. A GREAT night and a whole lot of fun. The next day we went back to the stadium to watch the track competition. There were several hundred people in attendance, far less than the thousands the night before. But there were some good competitions and some great races. Looking forward to seeing more. We really enjoyed ourselves. I like living in Daegu and Korea, there’s a lot of stuff to do. Just gotta find it. Telling it like it was. Your friend, Gary.

invited three French artists and one Japanese artist, who perform actively in the visual arts, and promote ‘2012 International Residency Program’ to support understanding culture and creation activity through international exchange. Through direct contact and exchange between the local artists and overseas artists, this program pursues the goal of understanding each other better and expanding their artistic abilities. The program lasts for three months. The four overseas artists lived in the Gachang Creation Studio, and also worked with eight young Korean artists since October 20. Three kinds of workshops were held, and artists introduced their art and shared their ideas with local arts professionals at many different workshops. But don’t fear the winter months any longer because Daegu’s Time To Give is presenting its 2nd event of romance and uncensored passion: Daegu’s Time to Date! Yes, we are back with another night of speed dating for you to find your one true love (or love for the night). Whether your pick up style is creepin’ and snakin’ your way

Daegu’s lonely hearts packed into MF bar in a cloud of aftershave and perfume, pulling out their best lines and moves. Although it was a fun filled night, most importantly we raised a ton of money for buying English materials for 3 orphanages in the Daegu area. We were able to buy books for a variety of levels and abilities, English activity games to aid practice and large display posters to decorate. We sent in a small army of volunteers to distribute the items and they were able to spend time with the children, playing with them and getting to know them. This time tickets sales and donations will go towards events within orphanages and welfare centres such as cooking classes and Christmas parties. We will also be running our Give A Gift Appeal this year, with funding greatly helping our effort. Tickets are only 10,000 won and remember, all ticket sales will go directly towards helping and improving disadvantaged children’s lives in the Daegu area. tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finally autumn after what felt like an eternity of summer in Daegu. Most people in Korea really love to celebrate the onset of autumn with many festivals and events going on around the country. On Saturday 8th October, the Daegu compass held a day trip to get out of the city and into the countryside north of Daegu around Mungyeong. First stop was the Omija Salmon farm. First, we made omija soap. This area is famous for omija which is a small inedible berry. It can be used to make an essence including tea, sauce, omija soju and no doubt many other, slightly strange combinations. We were meant to be fishing for the salmon ourselves but due to the lovely, dry weather we experienced this month, water levels were very low so we were

told ahead to leave our swimsuits at home. I was happy enough to just enjoy the results of the fishing. The owner of the farm jumped into the swimming pool and caught a few fish. He then, rather brutally cut up some of the fish for fresh sashimi and threw the

remaining fish on a barbeque. The fish squirmed and flapped around on the barbeque which was rather uncomfortable to watchâ&#x20AC;Śmy friends stepped in to skewer the fish down with chopsticks, lovely. We devoured the fish straight from the barbeque; it was beautiful

fish, if slightly gory. Some people had a problem scavenging around the guts, eyes and roe, so I think the less dainty of us got a lot more than our fair share. I don’t think I need to see another salmon for a fair while. After this feast, we headed to their restaurant for lunch! Bibimbap and lots of sides in a glass walled room surrounded by the autumnal mountains. Next, we hunter gatherers collected our dessert; apples from Cheonjubong apple farm. We were free to fill our boxes with their apples which are truly delicious at this time of year; cue many posed “just running casually through an orchard” photos. Maybe this was just me and my friends. Finally, we stopped at a shooting range where we could choose between pistol shooting, air rifle or clay pigeon shooting. I have to admit, firing guns has never particularly appealed to me but I was willing to give it a go. I chose clay pigeon shooting as this felt the most ‘Downtown Abbey; lady of the manor-esque’. I’m sure I looked far from this with my giant purple headphones and bright orange shoulder guard but the gun looked the part. Each person had an assistant, who pretty much did everything apart from pull the trigger so we all managed to hit the target a few times. This was my first Daegu compass trip and I would definitely recommend if you want to get out of Daegu for a day and do something a bit different without the hassle of organizing things yourself.

Korea On The Rocks Initiatives (KOTRi) is once again bringing the best in climbing and adventure films to audiences in Korea this winter with its third Reel Rock Film Tour fundraiser. The event promises awesome prize giveaways, raffles and a breathtaking film lineup that will get your heart racing and your palms sweating. KOTRi hosts the Reel Rock Film Tour to bring local and expat outdoor enthusiasts and rock climbers together in celebration of adventure, adrenaline and extreme filmmaking. Combining the biggest names in rock climbing with stories of pushing the limits of climbing like never before, the films showcase the very best of the sport and will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. 56

More than growing the reach of the sport, the event is a chance for Korea’s outdoor communities to give back to the peninsula’s beautiful natural environment. KOTRi’s mandate is to develop, maintain and improve Korea's climbing environment. The nonprofit organisation was founded in 2010 and has initiated a range of projects around Korea to ensure that the country's rock climbing spots are safe, well equipped and environmentally sustainable. Hosting the Reel Rock Film Tour is KOTRi’s biggest annual fundraiser and it has raised almost 12 million won over the past two years towards keeping Korea’s climbing areas safe. Due to the event’s popularity,

KOTRi will host the Reel Rock Film Tour in two cities this year. The films will be screened in Seoul on November 17th from 5pm until 11pm at the Dream Forest Art Center. Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. There are multiple areas dedicated to similar products. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun.
