Child Abuse . . . It’s No Secret EVERYONE CAN HELP Child abuse is no secret. We’ve heard about it. We need to motivate everyone to take positive action to reduce child abuse and neglect. The safety and health of the Army’s children rest in all of our hands.

Recognize the signs . . . report abuse and neglect.

What is Child Abuse? Child Abuse is the physical or mental injury, sexual maltreatment or neglect of a child by a parent or other person, such as a caregiver, responsible for a child.

-Physical Abuse Can include purposely hurting a child by hitting, shaking, burning, etc …

-Sexual Abuse Can include any sexual contact with a child, using a child for sexual films or prostitution, exposing a child to adult sexual activity (through photographs, videos, etc.).

-Emotional Abuse Can include repeated threats or insults to scare or embarrass a child, or to crush a child’s self-esteem. This may also be called verbal abuse.

-Neglect Can include failing to provide for a child’s emotional needs (love, attention, etc.) or physical needs (food, clothing, medical care, supervision, etc.). FMWR Outlook 11

Have a chance to see Chinhae and its famous springtime cherry blossom festival. Also visit the Republic of Korea Naval Bases and warships in Chinhae.

Depart: Camp Carroll CAC Parking Lot (0700) & Camp Walker Commissary Parking Lot (0800) Return:1800 (Camp Walker)/ 1900 (Camp Carroll)

The Chinhae Gunhangje Festival is the largest cherry blossom festival in Korea and draws millions of visitors annually. The festival is held in tandem with a commemoration of Admiral Yi Sun Shin (1545-1598AD), who is considered the greatest naval commander in Korean history. His most famous battle is “The Battle of Myeongnyang,” in which he was victorious over Japan despite his warships being outnumbered 133 to 13. The 2015 Festival Period is on 01 – 10 April and held at Chinhae Jungwon Rotary Area. This Festival is also a rare opportunity to visit the Republic of Korea Naval Academy which opens to the general public for the duration of the event. In the 1960s, Chinhae began efforts to preserve the preexisting trees while also planting new ones, especially after Korea Botanists determined that the town’s trees were native to Jejudo Island. Some parts of the town are especially famous for the beauty of their blossoms; but, be warned, during the Gunhanje Festival, it can get quite crowded. The most famous site is the Yeojwacheon Stream, a lovely waterway lined by spectacular cherry blossoms.

Daegu Soldier Wins Army Photo Contest SGT Scott J. Tant of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command (ESC) was recently awarded top honors in the 2014 Army Digital Photo Contest. His photo (below) was chosen from hundreds of entries in the Military Division People Category. Tant scored this shot while photographing a friend who was participating in a weekend triathlon near Savannah, Georgia. To get the shot, he waded waist-deep into the water as participants ran in from the beach. SGT Tant has been passionate about photography for years and seizes every opportunity to get behind the camera. In additional to his job as the Logistics Auto Supply NCOIC for the 19th ESC, he serves as a Unit Public Affairs Representative (UPAR). Though he enjoys photography of all kinds, his specialty is aviation. Tant will be awarded a certificate for his accomplishment at the Garrison Quarterly Awards Ceremony on 24 April.

Congratulations!

Athletes from Savannah, Georgia and the surrounding area enter the Atlantic Ocean on the swimming portion of a triathlon in the early morning hours of the 5th of June, 2014 at Tybee Island, Georgia. The triathlon challenged the participants with a 750 meter swim, a 20 kilometer bike race and a 5 kilometer run. 72 FMWR Outlook
