Haedong Yonggung Temple, the southern most temple near the east sea was founded by the great monk Naong, who was the consultant of King Gongmin. While he was practicing asceticism at Bunhwang temple in Gyeongju, the nation was hard hit by a draught that made the crops burn and people suffered from famine. People were disturbed and resented the gods for not giving them rain. One day, a sea god appeared in Naong‘s dreams and said that if they built a temple at the edge of Bongrae mountain and prayed there, all these hardship would go away, leading people back into happiness. After that dream, Naong visited the area where the Haedong Yonggung temple is located now, and saw that there was a mountain in the front and the sea at the back, which means if they say prayers in the morning they get answered in the evening. He built a temple later called Bomun temple and named the mountain Bongrae. The word “Bongrae” means something mysterious and pure, to which hermits with great understanding descended. The word “Bomun” means the absolute and limitless power of the Great Goddess Buddha of Mercy, called Gwanseumbosal in Korean. FMWR Outlook 31

Tour Fee: $15 (Adult) for transportation / Under 12 years old: $10 *Donghwa Temple Entrance Fee: Pay on site (Korean Won) Adult: 2,500 Won, Child under 12: 1,000 Won Donghwasa: Situated on the southern side of Palgongsan, this temple was built by Monk Geuk-Dal in A.D. 493, the 15th year of the reign of Shilla King Soji. Originally called Yugasa, the temple was given its current name when it was rebuilt in 771 by Simjiwongsa during King Heung-deok's reign. The current temple structure was built in 1732, but it's had serious renovations, additions, and landscaping in the past few decades. During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), Buddhism was heavily persecuted in Korea. Monks hid in remote mountain temples, and Donghwasa is a good example of the hidden sanctuaries of the time.
Gatbawi (Stone-hat Buddha): This single granite sculpture sits atop Mt. Palgong (850 meters up) and is surrounded by a screen-like rock wall as its background. It is said that Uihyeon made it in order to appease his mother's soul in the 7th ruling year of Queen Seondeok . It is reputed to be a miraculous statue that can make a prayer come true if it is prayed for with all your heart. The tomb was excavated in 1973 and is believed to date probably from the fifth century but perhaps from the sixth century CE. The tomb was for an unknown king of the Silla Kingdom. The tomb, in typical Silla style, is a woodlined chamber running east to west and is covered in a mound of boulders and earth. The tomb is 47 meters in diameter, 157 meters in circumference, and 12.7 meters in height. The chamber of the tomb contained a lacquered wooden coffin which had burial goods placed around it. A total of 11,500 artifacts were recovered from the tomb. The name of the tomb derives from a famous painting of a white horse which is depicted on a birch bark saddle flap, also referred to as a mud-guard.
MUSEUM: There are a number of national museums in key locations across Korea, but the collection of this museum is especially important because it allows the general public, archaeologists, and historians to understand the rise of civilization in southeast Korea. The museum contains important items of national cultural heritage. They include the Emille Bell, which is said to ring with the sound of a child who was sacrificed for its casting. There are several Silla Crowns in the museum's collection. The museum also holds many artifacts excavated from Anapji Pond and artifacts excavated from the Hwangnyongsa Temple site. Many holdings are displayed outdoors, a common practice in Korean museums.
