The great master Wonhyo first built this temple in 683AD where he practiced asceticism. After that, he called the mountain Bogwangsan and the temple Bogwangsa. Later, King Taejo Lee Sung-gye began the Joseon Dynasty after he prayed for a hundred days at this temple. Thanks to this, King Hyeonjong in 660AD deemed the temple as a primary prayer location and changed the name of the mountain to Geumsan and the temple is named as Boriam. Nestled at the top of Geumsan Mountain, Boriam Temple is a picturesque temple embracing the beautiful mountain surroundings and the Namhae Sea. Inside of the temple, Jwaseondaebawi Rock (where the great master Wonhyo sat in meditation) catches one’s eye, as well as Ssanghongmun which is a cave that is one of 38 scenic views in Geumsan Mountain. Boriam Temple along with Naksansa Hongryeonam Temple in Gangwondo and Bomunsa Temple in Ganghwa-gun are one of three noted praying temples in Korea. 18 FMWR Outlook

Return: Camp Carroll at 2130 / Camp Walker at 2230 Bring KRW for food, snacks etc. Registration deadline: 6 October. 765-8325 The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula; it was established at the end of the Korea war to serve as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. The DMZ is a de facto border barrier, which runs in the vicinity of the 38th parallel north. The DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half, crossing the 38th parallel at an angle, with the west end of the DMZ lying south of the parallel and the east end lying north of it. It was created as part of the Korean Armistice Agreement between North Korea, the people’s Republic of China, and the United Nations Command forces in 1953. It is 250 kilometers (160 miles) long, approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) wide and, despite its name, is the most heavily fortified border in the world. The Northern Limit Line< or NLL, is the disputed maritime demarcation line between North and South Korea in the Yellow Sea, not agreed in the armistice. The coastline and islands on both sides of the NLL are also heavily fortified.

The Andong area has a variety of socio-historical and religious heritage from different periods, from ancient times to the present. Andong holds the largest number of cultural properties in Korea. Andong reveals a very vivid picture of the aesthetics and traditions of the Orient. We can find not only tangible cultural and historical heritages like ancient villages, but also many intangible cultural properties of the Andong tradition such as Cha-Jeon-Nori (demonstration of battle game, involving hundreds of men working together), Not-Dari-Balgi (a female play), Hajeon Ssaeum an Jeojeon Nonmegi (farmers’ song), Naebang Gasa (women’s calligraphy), Hangsangsori (a funeral dirge) etc.

-Bring a lunch sack and/or Korean won for meal. -No pets are allowed on the bus. -Under 18 years must be accompanied by parents. -Minimum tour slots 20 / Maximum 40. FMWR Outlook 49

The silk road was not only a trade route for precious goods, but also a primary artery through which politics, culture and economy were actively exchanged between the east and west. Accepting other people and civilizations started a new era. Silla (Gyeongju), located at the east end of the silk road, was an open and progressive multicultural society. A few examples of the region’s culture can be demonstrated through notable historical sites such as: The Ancient Scythian’s golden Rhyton, the stone warrior statue in the royal tomb of King Heungdeok, the glass bead cup and the golden sword of state. Silla’s open mindedness to other cultures was an integral component of the region’s success and contributed significantly to its prosperity. 50 FMWR Outlook
