“Making A Difference” FMWR Outlook 5
Customer Feedback results in new concept restaurant at Camp Walker’s Evergreen Community Club In 2011, during a series of Commanders Community Council (C3) meetings, community members brought to light a growing concern by Camp Carroll residents that there was no commercial restaurant on post where they could enjoy a quality, sit-down, full service meal that reminded them of home. In the months to follow, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) gathered feedback through ICE, interaction with spouses groups, Family Readiness Groups, unit leaders, surveys, and focus groups from every demographic and began work on what was to become the first USAG Daegu FMWR restaurant fully conceptualized through customer input - Cactus Jack’s. The southwestern-themed restaurant opened in the Bowling Center in February 2013 and has since received continuous outstanding ratings in customer satisfaction. As Cactus Jack’s continued to achieve positive results, the Evergreen Community Club was showing continuous decline. It was determined that a 360-degree assessment was necessary and would begin immediately. In March, Plans Specialist and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Lenore Roe from the Plans, Analysis, and Integration Office was assigned to the task. She, along with DFMWR Director, Paul Matthews, and key FMWR Business Operations Division staff, began an in-depth review of business programs and operations; financials, ordering and storage of product, menus, hours of operation, trends, labor, pricing and every conceivable factor with potential affect on the overall success of FMWR bowling,
golf, and clubs. At the same time, FMWR Marketing was collecting and analyzing customer feedback and conducted a series of focus groups involving officers, enlisted, DA civilians and contractors, spouses, and for the first time ever, Honorary Members. Information gathered from the groups was critical in determining customers’ opinions on FMWR dining and how each club’s personality should be redefined to serve them better. Over the next six months, a team of FMWR professionals from the Garrison met weekly via teleconference with Pacific Region Business Consultant and Executive Chef, Alicia O’Pierce, to determine how the Evergreen Club could be revitalized without major renovation. The result was “Legends.” Legends restaurant is the Evergreen Club dining room overlooking the first fairway but with a new personality and décor, dining ware, completely reengineered menus, and a revised ingredients list that includes better cuts of meat, fresher ingredients and a number of products not previously considered or available. In preparation for the September 27 Open House, the Evergreen Club will close down completely from September 16-26 to accommodate a team of chefs and consultants from IMCOM HQ, Pacific Region and the Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul to conduct front and back of the house training for service providers and the kitchen team. For more details about revitalization, contact Business Operations Division Chief, Mike Monti at 768-7716 or D,FMWR Paul Matthews at 768-7025.

The Digital Training Facilities (DTFs) offer a flexible and efficient means by which Soldiers and civilians can meet their training requirements in today’s demanding Army. The DTF provides a classroom setting where soldiers can work on Structured Self Development (SSD); individual and collective training for various MOSs and skills or in support of a unit’s collective training tasks. Using video-teletraining equipment, high-speed internet access, and computer based training, Soldiers and civilians can train when it fits their professional needs and personal schedules. Walk-ins can be easily accommodated when group learning is not scheduled. Contact your training officer or NCO to see what’s available for you and your soldiers or call your local DTF Manager listed above. Courtesy Ad

Parent Advisory Committee Meetings
16 Sep, 1730 at the School Age Center (SAC) on Cp Walker and 16 Dec, 1730 at the Child Development Center (CDC) on Camp Walker
The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is a group of elected parents who serve in an advisory capacity. The PAC comes together for, at least, quarterly meetings during the year and makes recommendations and gives input on policies, programs, services, allocation of resources, etc. This council is a very important part of having a say in our programs. CYS Services management staff listen to and appreciate the input from parents. Please come and let your voice be heard. We will have FREE refreshments and all attendees get Parent Participation Points! FMWR Outlook 53
Camp Walker Child Development Center (CDC), bldg. #223 / 764-4834 What is the Army Strong Beginnings Pre-K Program? The Army Strong Beginnings Pre-K is a program designed to prepare children to be successful to enter school. The curriculum focuses on the social, emotional, and physical development of children; and equips them with basic academics and “Kindergarten Classroom Etiquette” skills to enhance “school readiness.” Who is eligible for the Program? Children who will be entering Kindergarten the following fall are eligible to attend Strong Beginnings Pre-K. For our program children must be 4 years old prior to 1 September 2013. When is the Strong Beginnings Pre-K Program? I need care before and after? The Strong Beginnings program operates from 0830 and ends at 1130. Wrap Around Care is offered at Camp Walker CDC for those parents who need Full Day care. Full Day care is available 0530-1800, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Thursday the Center opens at 0615. When does Strong Beginnings Pre-K operate? The Strong Beginnings Pre-K program follows the DODEA School Sure Start calendar. This means when DODEA is closed so is the Strong Beginnings Classroom. If your child is in Full Day (Wrap around Program) we will still care for your children however they will be in the Preschool room or the Kindergarten room depending on ratios. If you are in Part Day we can provide care under Hourly Care. The cost for hourly care is $4.00 per hour. What will the Strong Beginnings Pre-K program cost? Fees will be based upon total family income; Following DoD Fee Policy. Part Day Strong Beginnings is billed once a month, and they get billed the same amount every month even though there are breaks in some months and none in others. The Fees were set up this way, so payments are predictable, the fees take in to consideration all the breaks, teacher work days, and holidays and distributed evenly so the households pay the same every month. Families are not paying for the time your children are out of school because the Army took that into consideration when they came up with the fees. This is why you are charged the same amount when your child is not here during breaks (i.e. winter break, spring break, teacher work days, holidays and days out).
54 FMWR Outlook
Camp Walker Child Development Center (CDC), bldg. #223 / 764-4834 Will the teachers be allowed to teach children? In all CYS Services Programs, staff teach children. In the Strong Beginnings Pre-K Program, there is an emphasis on kindergarten readiness skills; therefore the teaching methods used will more often resemble those of a kindergarten classroom. What is the difference between Preschool and Strong Beginnings Pre-K? Preschool helps to develop the “whole child”, focusing on social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth of children. We nurture children and help them grow. Children are always free to explore and take risks in a safe environment. In preschool a child is encouraged to develop friendships, learn how to play with others and take turns. Academics are taught through hands-on experiences in math, science, reading and writing, etc. While Strong Beginnings Pre-K still does all of those wonderful things for children, there is more focus on academics skills, learning self control and following directions, learning numbers, colors, shapes and simple mathematical concepts, writing and reading. Strong Beginnings Pre-K focuses on kindergarten readiness and getting children ready for school. How will we celebrate the end of the school year? We recognize that leaving Strong Beginnings Pre-K and going to Kindergarten is a big deal for you and your child. We will celebrate the end of Strong Beginnings Pre-K with a “Graduation” type ceremony that will be fun and meaningful for the children and parents.

DISCONTINUATION OF FITNESS CENTER TOWEL SERVICES Effective 1 Oct 2013 All USAG Daegu Sports, Fitness and Aquatic Facilities (Cp. Carroll/Henry/Walker) will no longer provide towel service. We recognize the value towel service provided over the years. However, this service is an expensive option MWR can no longer afford. Resources are becoming more critical each day; we must take steps to reduce overall costs while remaining focused on higher priority requirements. We appreciate you stepping up and bringing your own towel as we continue to do our part to help drive efficiencies for our Army!
