Geoje is the second largest island in Korea (after Jeju), and has a population of approximately 250,000. It also has a noticeably high foreigner population thanks to being home to the world’s largest shipyard. The shipyards employ nearly a third of the island’s populations, and Geoje’s foreigner population alone is considered to be one of the highest in Korea. As one of the best sights in Geojedo Island, Geoje Haeguemgang is called the Sea Diamond of the South Sea. As a rock island, Haegeumgang is called the Sea Diamond of the South Sea. As a rock island, Haegeumgang belongs to Hallyeo Marine National Park, which is assigned as an official green area in South Korea. It’s original name was Galgotdo, because it is shaped like the spreading roots of arrowroot. Theses days it is known as Haegeumgang, meaning Geumgangsan Mountain in the sea. Windy Hill is probably the most famous thing to do on Geoje Island. It’s a hill that juts out from the main land and has a very beautiful windmill on it. It became famous because it was the filming site for some very famous Korean dramas like Eve’s Garden and Merry-GoRound. These days, many tourists come here to take pictures of the beautiful surroundings and location. Geoje Island’s newest tourist attraction is Jungle dome. Jungle Dome, Korea’s largest dome glass botanical garden located in Geoje, opened to the public on January 16th. Jungle Dome is a giant hemispherical structure with 7,500 pieces of triangular glass. From the outside, it looks like an egg is cut in half as its length is long and the width is shaped like a short oval. Reaching as high as 30 meters and stretching across 4,468 square meters, the dome houses escalators, an observatory valleys, a 10-meter high artificial waterfall, and a skywalk.
