Atomic Model & Theory Timeline

As scientists have learned more and more about atoms, the atomic model has changed. He proposed that matter could not be divided into smaller pieces forever. He claimed that matter was made of small, hard particles that he called “atoms”.

Democritus

He created the very first atomic theory.

Dalton viewed atoms as tiny, solid balls.

He showed that the atom was made of even smaller things.

He discovered protons and the nucleus.

His atomic model was known as the “raisin bun model”

He proposed that He showed that atoms electrons move have (+) particles in around the nucleus the center, and are in specific layers, or mostly empty space. shells.

He improved on Rutherford’s model.

He discovered neutrons.

Work done since 1920 has changed the model.

Working with Rutherford, he discovered particles with no charge; these particles were called as neutrons.

The new atomic model has electrons moving around the nucleus in a cloud.
