Tammy Pate Tammy Pate is proud to be known as a cowboy’s wife. Born into a Montana ranching family, Tammy grew up in a rodeo family with sisters that “rode from the time we could barely walk.” Her grandmother instilled in her the values of ranching life, a deep respect for nature and the practical skills needed to succeed. Tammy married Curt and together they deepened their horsemanship and stockmanship, developing innovative and gentle ways of training horses, keeping the stress levels low on horses, cattle and people. Over the years, Tammy discovered yoga and its parallels to horsemanship. She describes it as staying in balance in movement and centered physically and mentally for both horse and rider. Craig has been a horseman his entire life. Craig trained and rode 13 different horses to Register of Merit Awards in Western Pleasure as well as earning five Superior Western Pleasure Awards. He qualified for and rode at the AQHA World Show four times. His mare, Zippo Pat Seeker won the Minnesota and Iowa Pleasure Futurities and earned 158 Western Pleasure points. In 1993, Craig discovered Dressage and Eventing and decided on a career change. He began working with Patty Larson, who had had a successful career in Eventing including riding her homebred horse The Magic Man to Area 9 Intermediate Horse of the Year. In 2006, Craig and the Trakehner stallion Meisterwind earned their Grand Prix scores for the US Dressage Federation's Gold Medal. This places Craig into an elite group of people who have earned all three medals on the same horse that they have trained! Not surprisingly there are very few people who have done this. Craig is the owner/trainer at Rivervale Farm in Nisland, SD, a Sport Horse breeding and training facility. Many successful Hunters, Dressage and Eventing horses have been produced through the Rivervale Farm program. Regardless of the horse’s future career, Craig develops them all through a program of correct, classical Dressage training and a jumping foundation of cavalletti and gymnastics.

Colt Starting Challenge, USA Watch the interesting variety of techniques between six trainers from around the nation working with six unbroke horses--all at the same time! Who will be the first to put a saddle on their horse? Who will be the first to mount? Who will impress the judges and walk away with the right to continue to the national Colt Starting Challenge USA championship in Las Vegas later this year? You will want to be there for every nail-biting, teeth-clenching, breath-holding moment!

Contestants compete to gentle the horse they have drawn using Natural Horsemanship methods. The horses in this event have never been saddled, bridled, or ever ridden. They are only halter broke. No abusing the horse. No blindfolding the horse. The horse cannot be tied up to be saddled. No spurs, tie downs, and no hobbles or leg restraints of any kind. No bits allowed except an O ring snaffle bit. The horse can be ridden with a halter, bosal, or bridle. During the first segment (Friday 7 pm Main Arena), the trainers have two one-hour sessions to work with their horse in their round pen. All the trainers are working their horses at the same time. They each take a turn to explain to the audience what they are doing and why. Of course, they continue to communicate with their horse while they are talking to the audience. During the second segment (Saturday 3:30 pm Main Arena), they continue to work their horse in the round pen and build on the bond they are developing. They have the choice to leave the round pen and ride in the arena to prepare their horse for the obstacle course. For the final segment (Sunday 3:30 pm Main Arena), the round pens are removed from the arena, and each rider has 12 minutes to ride their horse through an obstacle course in the arena. Trained judges decide the winner. The top eight trainers in the nation with the most cumulative points for 2017 will be invited to attend the finals during the NFR Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas in December.

Liberty Class The Liberty class is designed to demonstrate the natural beauty, quality of gaits, and personality when the horse is free of any restraints. There are some misconceptions out there that a liberty class is where you scare your horse into running like crazy around the arena. That is not only a false perception, but that approach would result in a low score. The horse should be at attention, but not scared, moving out but not a constant gallop, and he/she should feel comfortable enough to kick up their heels and have fun. Liberty is not trainingintensive; it is more based on natural behavior. The horse is judged on its trot and canter in both directions, using the whole arena. The horse is judged by its natural style and movement, quality of type, grace, action, spirit, and ease of catching. Horses willing to “show off and keep moving with moderate encouragement from the handlers are preferred. The horse should give the impression that he/she is enjoying their Liberty class time, and be moving willingly with exuberance and enthusiasm, not so much that he/she is being forced to perform. Personal expression and bucking adds to the performance.

Costume Cavalcade The Costume Cavalcade can be many things: a chance to become that fantasy character that you have always enjoyed or admired; the chance to just be silly or goofy; the chance to bring out the character in your horse and let him/her shine. Whatever the Costume Cavalcade means to you, we want you to have fun. The tentative categories are: Most Creative/Original/Unique; Funniest/Comical/Cutest; Historical Figure or Event.
