CLINICIANS PAUL HUMPHREY

BARREL RACING

Paul Humphrey and Breaking the Mold are much more than just a "barrel clinic." It's much more than just going around the barrels. Paul comes from a reining, working cow horse background. Paul spent 9 years working under some of the best horsemen and learning how to truly train a horse. Paul started building the Breaking the Mold program over 10 years ago. He wanted to bring horsemanship back to the barrel racing sport by teaching riders about body control and by showing how a horse that is taught to use their body correctly will be easier to train, will be more consistent, and will have fewer issues than horses that do not have this knowledge. The Breaking the Mold program is not about a stronger bit or a stronger hand. It's not about gimmicks and quick fixes. It's about teaching your horse how to give to your hand and leg pressure, move shoulder, ribs and forward motion, all while staying collected. Once you've accomplished this, then you will take those movements to the barrel pattern. When your horse understands how to use their body correctly, it makes the training process so much easier. In order to keep the horse collected and using their body, the rider must understand how to keep the horse going in the right direction, to become soft and consistent and collected. With Paul's drills your horse never learns how to drop his shoulder, cheat the barrels, go by the barrel, or any other issues that will cost you time and troubles in a run. These drills were designed to teach the horse to use their body correctly and to never allow them to know any different than the correct way to work the pattern. When you attend a PAUL HUMPHREY BARREL RACING CLINIC you will be amazed how you will learn to connect to your horse. It’s all about true horsemanship and communication. Paul will work you and your horse to become a team. He truly believes that not only does the horse need to understand their job, but the rider also needs to understand how to prepare for the barrel run. In Paul's clinics and on his DVDs, he uses his barrel exercises to get your horse wanting to work each barrel, and eliminating any problems you are having such as fading into the first barrel, running by barrels, not collecting before the turn, stepping off, stepping in, not completing the barrel turn, shouldering in and many other issues. Paul's program is not about fixing problems, it’s about getting rid of them all together. This program will change your thoughts about barrel racing and will make the sport fun for you and your horse. Meaning – you can ride your horse to their potential without issues. GAITED

BREED SHOWCASE American Saddlebreds Friday w 2:00 w Landon Arena Saturday w 1:00 w Landon Arena Sunday w 1:20 w Domer  Arena

Arabians Renowned gaited horseman Friday w 4:10 w Landon Arena since 1980, Larry was very sucSaturday w 10:00 w Domer Arena cessful in the show ring, winning Sunday w 1:50 w Landon  Arena regional, national and grand national championships. In 2002 BLM Mustangs he was trainer of the year. He Friday w 12:20 w Domer Arena has held judges cards in several Saturday w 9:45 w Landon Arena gaited breeds. Initially, he trained Sunday w 12:00 w Landon  Arena using the traditional gaited horse Fell Ponies methods, thinking these were the Friday w 12:00 w Domer Arena only way to yield gait. As his Saturday w 10:10 w Domer Arena training progressed he wanted to Sunday w 12:10 w Landon  Arena train gaited horses to a higher level so they would gait for any Foundation Morgans level rider and the riders could Friday w 4:20 w Landon Arena Saturday w 10:20 w Domer Arena count on them to be safe and Sunday w 1:40 w Landon  Arena dependable. In his quest to learn correctness and lightness, Larry Friesians began studying classical dresFriday w 12:10 w Domer Arena sage in the early 1990’s from Saturday w 1:10 w Landon Arena contemporary masters who had Sunday w 12:20 w Landon Arena studied under Nuno Olivera and Midwest Mustang & Burros at classical schools in Europe. Classical training teaches the horse to rebalFriday w 4:30 w Landon Arena ance itself into a relaxed frame of collection, engaging the hind legs. Saturday w 3:00 w Domer Arena Engagement of the hind legs, whether false or real is what makes a gaited Sunday w 1:00 w Domer  Arena horse gait. Larry learned to bring horses into a more classical frame to gait. When you strengthen the correct muscles, the horse can carry a rider and Missouri Fox Trotters rebalance into natural collection. Larry learned in short order that horses were Friday w 2:10 w Landon Arena more consistant in their gait and could perform gaits with a wider range of Saturday w 3:20 w Domer Arena speeds when classically trained. Correct training builds confidence in a horse. Sunday w 3:00 w Domer  Arena Natural horsemanship puts a great foundation on horses and prepares the Off-the-Track Thoroughbreds horse mentally and physically to begin training for collection. Classical training Friday w 4:00 w Landon Arena then takes communication with the horse to the next level of lightness. Most Saturday w 1:20 w Landon Arena gaited horses only need a mild degree of collection to gait. Larry continues his Sunday w 1:30 w Landon  Arena education each year from classical dressage instructors. He travels the U.S. and Canada doing clinics and equine expositions. His goals are to help people Pleasure Walking Horses understand what makes gaited horses gait so we can spare the horses from Friday w 2:20 w Landon Arena Saturday w 3:10 w Domer Arena some of the training myths attached to the gaited world that are not in the Sunday w 1:10 w Domer  Arena horse’s best interest. By making things better for the horse, the horse will be smoother, safer and more dependable for riders. Larry teaches you how to teach your horse to relax so you can teach a correct response with the least effort. He teaches you how to teach your horse to respond to subtle cues. His clinics are a shot in the arm for your riding program providing very intense instruction to all levels of riders on their own horses that instills an eagerness you will carry with you so you can further your relationship with your horse at home.

Amy Crawford Being an animal lover her whole life, Amy Crawford naturally wanted to pursue a career working with animals, specifically horses. She attended the University of Missouri - Columbia and graduated with a B.S. in Animal Science. She then built a successful training and instruction business, leading several horse and rider teams to multiple World Championship titles and other top awards. After a tragic accident left her special horse with muscle atrophy from months of stall rest, Amy decided to look into further education so she could assist horses recovering from injuries, overexertion related issues and misunderstood behavioral issues. This prompted her to attend and graduate from one of the world's most prestigious equine massage schools with a certification as an Equine Sports Massage Therapist in 2003. She is also a Certified Canine Massage Therapist and trained in equine myofascial release therapy. Since 2003, Amy has enjoyed working with amazing clients, horse owners, chiropractors, veterinarians, dentists and farriers to provide a complimentary therapy for our equine partners.

Greg Darnell Considered one of the great treasures of Texas, internationally lauded master silversmith and metal working artisan Greg Darnall has redefined how equine enthusiasts approach and apply bits and spurs for improved control, comfort and ultimately improved horsemanship for over a half-century. Greg’s designs and theories on improved response and understanding between rider and mount have transformed handling techniques on multiple levels. Even the earliest Darnall custom bits are still in service today, along with a long line of hardware created by bit makers inspired by Greg’s innovative designs. Greg’s educational DVD, 2018 EquiFest of Kansas Official Program v 15

SPEAKERS/DEMOS Education vs. Domination. What Role Does The Bit Play?, is considered the worldwide gold standard for riders ranging from world champions to beginners. Being taught the trade of horse training, farrier and being a herdsman by his father, and roping and rodeoing by many renown horseman, he found his life being molded into a “cowboy.” At the age of 8, he carved out his first belt and billfold, but his desire was to someday become a saddle maker. Having moved back to Montana (where he once lived as a young child), he was hired on the Garrison Ranch as a herdsman in 1978. Riding over thousands of acres and tending to hundreds of cattle sun up to sun down, it was amazing what he learned. Even though he grew up in the saddle, he didn’t realize how important the “saddle fit” was for the horse as well as the rider. In 1980, he built his first saddle while working for the Garrisons. Today, 35+ years later and over 250 custom built saddles, he’s decided to share the trade of saddle making.
